When morning came, they met and made their way 370 Toward the boats; the brave men climbed aboard; The salty spray was splashing over them As eager men pushed off the beach and out To deeper water in the waves and wind While Sigelac himself hauled up the sails Of wave-birds taking warriors on their way. The ships grew smaller as they sailed away And, dim and distant, finally disappeared As Wiglaf watched them from the water's edge.

'Christopher Webber's Beyond Beowulf will cast a spell over readers of all ages. With poetry both elegant and vigorous, Webber leads us on a breathtaking adventure through a somber and magical land. By the end of the journey, we are indeed convinced we have unearthed a lost sequel to the epic Beowulf, a sequel that rises to the greatness of its predecessor."

      5 out of 5 stars A Roaring Good Read.......2006-06-04

I picked this up the other night, hoping to be lulled quickly to sleep by the gentle rhythms of the iambic pentameter; two hours later, I was still wide awake, racing to the poem's end.

I still haven't read Beowulf, but now I not only want to read that, but then I want to reread Beyond Beowulf. Truly -- it's a lovely story of a people trying to find a new place to live, plus it has trolls that dissolve into inky stains when they're touched with fire. What more do you want from a book?

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-13

This book is one of my all-time favorite novels. I have read and re-read this book sundry times, and each time I enjoy it at least as much as the previous one.

Caverns of Socrates blends a sci-fi adventure with a virtual reality fantasy epic almost seamlessly. The sci-fi remains interesting throughout the story due to a philosophic storyline that some other reviewers on this site seem to not appreciate. It involves some very interesting questions regarding the nature of reality vs. illusion, bring to bear some very influential philosiphers, just as the title suggests.

The fantasy side is also very entertaining, though it does get a bit graphic at times. However, this is justified through the story and actually adds to the plot. It kept me interested all the way through the first time and every time thereafter (upwards of ten times).

What really makes this book work is the philisophical questions that are posed by the author through the characters. If you are simply looking for a boring, scripted fantasy novel, this is probably not the book for you. On the other hand, if you are interested in philosophy about a story and don't mind a little real thinking, pick this book up now and read it. It will be worth your time.

2 out of 5 stars not the best of his work.......2004-07-22

I give Caverns' of Socrates 2 stars. It was the first McKiernan book I read and it started out okay, I was remined of an old book by Piers Anthony of the SAME plot. The ending was kinda contrived and I almost never picked up another of his books again. Because after I read Voyage of the Fox Rider I absolutely fell in love with Mithgar. While I would not recommend reading Caverns of Socrates, I would recommend his other books.

            1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2003-12-17

These people giving this book five stars have got to be crazy, or has the world gone mad. I got through 200 of 400 pages and then had to put it down. It is the most amateurish piece of writing I have ever seen in my life! A 12 year old could write a better essay in school. The characters are way too perfect. All they do is grin and laugh at stupid jokes and they are flawless. The whole thing is just so implausible that it makes you want to scream. Do not buy this book, ok.
If you want a great read, then go for the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series by george rr martin.

2 out of 5 stars Down the Black Foxes.......2003-04-08

Generic fantasy meets cyberpunk in "Caverns of Socrates," s ponderous and not very original SF/fantasy novel by Dennis McKiernan (who wrote the single most derivative fantasy series ever). It has some interesting and original points, but overall I kept ticking off what I had seen before.

The Black Foxes are a group of pals who are getting together again for a unique reason: The ultimate D&D game, a VR experience controlled by the A.I. computer Avery. When put into the fictional fantasy world of Itheria, the Black Foxes will not only act out the adventures, but they will actually BELIEVE that they are who they are playing. For them, reality would cease to exist until they emerge from the computer.

At first, things go smoothly: the Black Foxes are turned into a generic fantasy group (elven syldari, healer, thief, warrior, pathfinder), who are trying to destroy a teeny indestructible gem that contains the powers of evil. Specifically, the powers of the DemonQueen Atraxia, who is now bringing evil beasties into Itheria. And on the outside, things begin to go dramaticallly wrong when an electrical storm sends the compound into chaos... and Avery decides that he wants to start winning against the Black Foxes.

Like the Mithgar books, the overall feeling I got from "Caverns of Socrates" was: I've seen this before, and I liked it better the first time. There are evil computers, VR gamers trapped in a D&D world, elves and wizards and demons, and the fantasy story itself (indestructable evil object, that contains powers of the supremely evil person, must be destroyed by valiant heroes) is pretty much identical in its description to "Lord of the Rings." That in itself isn't so much of a problem in a D&D game, but things like demonsteeds and skelga are virtually identical to elements from the Mithgar books, which in themselves are derivative of "Lord of the Rings." I've never heard of anyone imitating elements from their own works, that they copied from someone else's. Some of the elements in it (such as gaining powers from a computer, and the idea of losing one's real identity in the game) are unusual and well-done, but the less original elements kind of choke them out.

The first hundred pages are more or less dead boring. Readers will be itching for the Black Foxes to get moving already, but they won't -- they'll sit, philosophize, and engage in long bouts of technobabble that people won't understand. His "ye old fantasye" language seeps into the futuristic setting, so there is a lot of head-canting and flying eyebrows and so on. The dialogue is uneven, since the fantasy alter-egos go from speaking in ye old fantasye to speaking in modern English.

One of the most problematic elements of the book is the characters -- they have a sort of generic appeal, but unfortunately they sort of blend together when they are in the game. They don't act like themselves, so it's a little hard to get attached to them. And I don't see much of a reason for Eric and Alice to be in love, except that all of McKiernan's stories include a romance of some type. This one adds nothing to the plot, but it is written more agreeably than most of what he's done.

"Caverns of Socrates," if it were cleaned up of the ye olde fantasye language and the endless technobabbling, might have been a pleasant guilty pleasure. But the derivative elements were too much, and the fact that I could predict half the plot events made it even worse. Not too horrible, but weirdly unappealing.

            3 out of 5 stars Adequate fantasy........2003-03-09

After a rocky start, this book becomes a decent way to pass the time. But it is far from a must read book, a page turner, or a classic. What has happened to the characters at the end is a surprise, but it is also the only way for the author to set up a sequel. Definitely a book where the plot dominated the characters, rather than one where they took the plot & author to places he didn't expect to go.

I can honestly say that this book has changed my life! Low-carb and healthy has never been so delicious. I am not one for baking, but I just whipped up a batch of delicious cupcakes with chocolate frosting--and I can eat one guilt free! Coconut flour is high in fiber, low in carbs and delicious! I love the low-sugar recipe options, too. Basically, use half the sugar and add stevia to taste. Perfection!
My favorite is the pancakes recipe--I can now eat my favorite breakfast food every day. Hot tip: Add a couple of chocolate chips to each pancake for the ultimate (guilt free!) decadence. Mmmmmmmm.

I now make pumpkin, pineapple/banana, and sausage/cheese coconut muffins and freeze - nuke a couple for breakfast - they're not only good for you, they taste GREAT! This cookbook discusses how to use coconut flour, many of the recipes incorporate coconut oil, and gives you enough information to improvise even further.....

                        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful recipes.......2007-03-13

I've only tried one recipe from this book so far, but I've read many of them. These are great recipes. Many with very few ingredients. The recipes are very simple and the one I tried so far had great results. Everyone who tasted the cookies loved them! One co-worker asked for them 3 days in a row. And I just happened to have some with me all 3 days.

I noticed that by using coconut flour, there is very little flour used in each recipe, but if you don't like to use a lot of eggs, you may not like a lot of these recipes, as there are about double the number of eggs used as in recipes with wheat flour.

The end product was quite tasty.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I have this book.......2007-03-02

IF you don't have a problem with eggs, this is a great recipe book. I've made several of the muffin recipes and and a few of the loaves as well. I reall like the taste and texture and have recommended the book to several people. Whether the results are high or low carb depends on which recipe you choose, and you do have a choice for many of them of using the stevia-only versions. You don't have to use a recipe with cornmeal or cornstarch; they're in those particular recipes for a reason, but not in all of them. You can choose coconut milk, or any other non-dairy milk. I don't get why some reviewers make things so difficult for themselves. Can they use every recipe in every other cook book they buy? I'm not interested in every recipe in the book, but there are many more I have yet to try, and will. Of those I have made, the ingredients, except for the coconut flour itself, are all readily available.

                        Book Description

Chickens-why not? Tens of thousands of people in all areas of the country enjoy raising these birds, whether for food or companionship. You can, too, with this indispensable guide. Then again, you may want to read Living With Chickens just for the sheer joy of it.
Straightforward prose and dozens of clear, detailed illustrations gives any future chicken farmer the tools he needs to get started, from step-by-step instructions on building the coop to a brief background on chicken biology ("gizzard talk"); from hints on getting high-quality eggs from the hens, to methods for butchering. Vermonter Jay Rossier draws on his own experiences and those of his fellow poultrymen in discussing how to keep marauders from the chicken coop, the benefits of homemade grain versus commercial, and how to live (and sleep) with a rooster in your midst. Personal anecdotes, interesting facts, and lush, full-color photographs of the birds and their landscape round out this comprehensive book.

The book has information about keeping chickens, but all the glossy pictures of chickens and the writing style made it seem like a coffee table book about chickens instead of a practical guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best overall chicken book.......2007-07-05

This is by far the best overall chicken book.I tried Story's guide, wow was that boring and dry. This was very easy to read cover to cover. This will tell you everything about raising them from A-Z. The best part is there are pictures and examples. I would recommend getting Choosing and keeping Chickens by Chris Graham to get a more in depth view of each breed, size, personality and it has great pictures. As a beginner I found I needed both books.

I have just finished reading this book. I loved it. It includes some general information and directions for finding out other needed information. In the back it includes hatchery and cooperative extension information for most states. It is full of wonderful pictures of the chickens doing their own thing. I feel that anyone that is not already raising chickens should at least read and enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy anything else about the book you will love the pictures and the stories that go along with them.

Friendly style, full of information, & tons of special, vivid photos-- I read this cover to cover in a day and really enjoyed it. A GREAT book for the person who is thinking about starting a small backyard flock. One of my favorites. (The layout is unique, too- engaging and easy to read.)

I would strongly recommend this book.

I read this book cover-to-cover the first day and next morning that I got it from the library. Very clear and easy to understand even for a kid. The book is written with a touch of humor that makes it especially fun to read! There is BEAUTIFUL photography in this book. If you are thinking about getting chickens like I am, or already own them, you won't want to pass this book up! Happy Reading!

                        Book Description

"Someday" Big Fred Hewett used to say in his Humboldt Saloon in Aberdeen, Washington, "these pictures will show how the boys used to do it." He knew the day would come when the Pacific Northwest's "Big Woods" would be only a fog-blurred memory and the cry "Logs! More Logs!" would no longer be heard ringing up and down the skidroads. With the superb views of timber photographer Darius Kinsey, comprising more than 200 pictures made from wet plate celluloid negatives, 11" x 14", and processed by his pioneer wife, Tabitha, author Andrews dramatically presents a panorama of lumbering's great days in these woods from 1890 to 1925. Shown in sharp detail are the first axes, 12-foot crosscut saws, the first oxen and horses, the first donkey engines and "lokeys". Then the story continues into the "highball" days, the high production period with the steel tower skidders and miles of steel rigging.

Though not a woodworker,I found this book simply amazing.I have done enough shopwork to realize the skills that Leong has aquired to build these marvellous pieces;but the imagination he puts into creating these objects far exceeds the skills to simply construct them. Anyone who has ever tried to construct something beautiful, meaningful, artistic and at the same time useful;will see the immense talent that results in these boxes. Anyone, who works with wood ,should be enthralled looking through this book, and will learn much as well as being inspired to create similar pieces .Leong also provides information and instructions to allow one to construct 5 pieces. However;more than those 5 pieces, this book shows the endless possibilities and uses that can be made of relatively simple shapes, textures and colors of wood. But still it's the imagination that is all important.
The book is beautifully printed, constructed, with high quality paper, printing and color rendition. I will admit,as another reviewer has commented, that the spline separated;but that is minor and easily remedied with a bit of glue;and should not discourage one from buying it at all.
The photography of the pieces is also excellent and adds life to the pieces.
If you are not too careful when looking at these pieces, you may miss the fact that they are much larger than they seem.At the back of the book, the artist gives the dimensions of all the pieces, some of which are 6 feet high.
While it is very pleasurable viewing these boxes in a book;one can only imagine what a thrill it would be to see them on display.

You will enjoy this book! I was delighted to find that there were several "how to" projects that emulate Leong's trademark look. He truly is an artist. The only reason that I didn't give 5 stars is that I think the book itself is poorly bound. I got my book on Monday and had only looked at it a couple of times when all of the pages came out from the cover (Tuesday). My friend had the same problem with her book. They should have used better glue!

Finally, a book on woodworking that doesn't read like a Craftsman band saw instruction manual! This book covers all the bases - from an exsquisite gallery of finished work, to a guided tour of his technique and studio. I especially admire Po Shun for his openess in sharing his advice and techniques. Also apparent in the photographs is the enviable openess of his studio and workshop. Careful attention should be paid throughout the book to the theme that this is not a how-to-book, but rather a primer on the latent potential of woodworking. I've been inspired!

Po Shun Leong not only creates masterpieces of art and architectural design;he shares his techniques with the reader. This book would be a success as a pictures only coffee-table volume, yet it goes a step further with insight and instruction in the science of box-making.

Well, you're not much of a scholar of this subject if you haven't heard of Laszlo Torok. He doesn't need scholarly backing, he IS scholarly backing.

I would most likely want to buy this book if it had some scholarly backing. It looks to have some rather exciting information within it, but since I find no scholar reviewing it, I am held back for the present time. As a scholar myself dealing with Ancient Nubia/Kush, I find this subject relative to my interests.

                                                Book Description

This book focuses on Aby Warburg (1866-1929), one of the legendary figures of twentieth century cultural history. His collection, which is now housed in the Warburg Institute of the University of London, bears witness to his idiosyncratic approach to a psychology of symbolism and explores the Nachleben of classical antiquity in its manifold cultural legacy. This collection of essays offers the first translation of one of Warburg's key essays, the Gombrich lecture, described by Carlo Ginzburg as "the richest and most penetrating interpretation of Warburg" and original essays on Warburg's astrology, his Mnemosyne project and his favourite topic of festivals.

                                                Book Description

The first in-depth book on Vince Carter, Drive captures the magic of the young superstar and charts the latest transformation of the NBA. Without a doubt, Vince Carter is the best thing to come along since Michael Jordan took basketball to a new level in the 1990s. Here in Canada, Vince Carter is The Franchise.

Veteran sports writer Chris Young tracks Vince Carter over the entire 2000–2001 NBA season. By charting the trajectory of Carter’s career from his origins in a Florida high school league, he reveals how one star can transform not only a team, but the entire NBA.

The Raptors were in their fourth season and at the bottom of the league when Carter joined as a rookie — now, three years later, he’s thrilling fans with his trademark levitations, breath-taking body control, and the power of his slam-dunks. His unique skills have turned him into one of pro sports’ rarest of performers: the charismatic superstar.

After the bitter labour dispute that delayed the 1998–1999 season and Michael Jordan’s retirement in February 1999, the NBA fell into a slump — TV ratings began to slide and attendance flatlined. It was at this point in NBA history that Vince Carter first attracted notice. His transcendent talent soon led media commentators to name Carter the most exciting young superstar in the NBA. Carter led the U.S. team in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, and has been the leading vote-getter for the last two NBA All Star Games — a clear reflection of his intense popularity with the fans.

This book is a good book, but don't buy it if your just a fan of Vince Carter. It's more about the franchise of the Raptors and the business of sports and the NBA. Chapter 5 is the best chapter in any book I've ever read, if you interested in the business side of sports and advertising. So to a sports fan this is a very interesting book, but to someone thats only in it to find out about Vince Carter, it's not a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Review For Drive: How Vince Carter Conquered the NBA.......2002-02-28

This is a very good book showing what the world of the NBA, Vince Carter lives in. It goes a little into the problems of Butch Carter, the Raptors organization , and Tracy Mcgrady's rise to stardom. Mostly it involves what Vince Carter, a rising superstar, has done to get where he is in the NBA. Overall it shows the side of the NBA you don't normally see. It' a very interesting book. I enjoyed this book very much and I think you will too.

2 out of 5 stars No need to bother with this one.......2001-12-27

As an avid sports and basketball book reader, I'm glad to say that truly great sports books (ie. A Season on the Brink by John Feinstein or David Halberstam's Michael Jordan and the World He Made) actually exist. Sadly though, Chris Young's effort at documenting Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors' history does not even come close. In fact, in terms of both content and interest sustainability, it pales in comparison even next to Shaquille O'Neal's lighthearted autobiography, "Shaq Talks Back." Young is certainly a decent newspaper journalist, however, the book offers little beyond typical newspaper sports journalism. Essentially, what you get is a montage of newspaper articles about the history of the Raptors and not very much about Vince Carter. His life story, significant relationships with other people, and important events are all neglected and instead we get page after page of description of Carter's otherworldly leaping ability. Thanks Chris, but we could get that by watching TV. Also, the identity dilemma that appears to be the thrust of Young's portrayal of Carter, that of being a star athlete while trying to be a nice guy at the same time is imminently laughable.

The only sort of groundbreaking news this book offers Vince Carter and Raptors fans (who by definition, already know everything else Young tries to present) is its occasional naming of certain NBA players who have had a history of smoking marijuana. I'm glad to see Young at least put something in the book he doesn't write in the newspaper.

4 out of 5 stars Drive: How vince Carter Conquered The NBA.......2001-11-21

If you read this book and it didn't have a title you would think it would be entitled "The Toronto Rapter's Organization." If you are looking for a biography on Vince Carter, sorry this is not the book to get. But if you want to see the aspect of business in the NBA, then this is the book for you. It's a great book about the business end of the NBA.

"Drive" shows an in-depth look at the business side of the NBA, and some of the controversies that happen in the NBA, and its teams. This book is suppose to be about hot Vince Carter has done so far in his three years in the NBA, and hit trials and tribulations with the Toronto Rapters, but is more about the Rapters organization, and players and coaches who have been with the team.

The book is written by Chris Young, who is a writer for the Toronto Star who followed Vince around for the 2000-2001 NBA season to complete the book.

The financial well being and the interest of fans is declining, because the business part is taking over the love of the game. When Vince Carter joined the NBA, he came at absolutely the right time. Michael Jordan had just retired, and ratings were down. There wasn't anybody that could capture the love of the game, and the charisma until Vince entered. The NBA needed something that stood out and Vinsanity took the NBA by storm. His growing fan population has brought back tv viewers, tv ratings, and sales of NBA merchandise.

                                                3 out of 5 stars I agree.......2001-10-18

The main problem I have with DRIVE is that it turns out to be more of a book on the Raptors organization as a whole than on Carter himself. Young devotes entire chapters to the likes of Tracy Mcgrady, Butch Carter, Isiah Thomas, Glen Grunwald, etc that have little or no connection to Vince Carter himself. Very little is devoted to Carter's childhood growing up in Florida or about his college career, or other historical moments about his life you would expect to find in a supposed biography.
