Customer Reviews:
Biochemistry anyone?.......2007-06-20
Most people are probably buying this book because they are a college student and they have to, but compared to some other books, this one is clear and easy to read, so don't be too afraid of Biochemistry if you have this in you bag.
Question.......2007-03-13
What is the difference between this edition and the 6th revised edition, and why is the latter so much cheaper?
Great reference.......2006-12-21
Disclaimer: I've only used the 4th edition, even after the newest edition came out, because that's what I happen to own. From what I understand, the later edition includes most, if not all, of the 4th edition, and a couple of new chapters. My graduate class called for the latest edition, but I got through the class using my good ol' 4th.
I used the 4th edition of this book both in college and grad school, and it's served me very well. It succinctly covers the basics of biochemistry, including enzyme kinetics, protein structure, metabolism, and biosynthesis. It also includes helpful chapters on common techniques and assays. Diagrams and illustrations help understand the material (and there are diagrams for everything), and the text includes practice questions to solidify knowledge. Clear organization makes the book easy to use, and the text is sometimes surprising with unexpected humor. There are also charts for quick reference on the inside back cover. Oh, and handy side notes that define new terms and provide quick facts.
The book also links each topic to human disease, which makes it great for comprehending biochemistry as a whole.
All of this is done in simple, straightforward language that is nonetheless pleasant to read. (Really, this text is not as boring as one might think from a textbook!)
This book has served me very well, and I still refer to it to refresh myself on pathways. While, like most textbooks, it's not THE most detailed text you could get, it provides an excellent overview and jumping-off point.
It's good........2006-10-30
I am currently enrolled in an undergraduate biochemistry course and have been for about two months. So far (the first 15 chapters), I am very pleased with the textbook. Most explanations are clear, and the illustrations are usually helpful. Also, there are asides that link concepts to real world applications that are interesting. But, I wish the protein chapters included a more comprehensive coverage of motifs.
Great Biochem book.......2006-08-18
I had this textbook for Biochem 1 and 2 and I thought it was excellent. It went in-depth when it was needed. The authors choose to leave out some reactions (using multiple arrows) and I thought that was great because it wasn't really needed in most cases. Sometimes there were questions though on how to get to one structure from the last. Pictures were great and really helped to picture what was going on.

Encouraging.......2000-03-30
I am a B.Communications University student currently working on my dissertation. I am using quantitative techniques and am new to the subject. After reading a few books regarding statistics, a friend of mine recommended this book and I just want to say that it really helped me in times when I felt there was no way out with these complicated statistics. The reasons why I truly love this book is because every detail, that some people take for granted, is explained in clear simple English. This book is very user-friendly and therefore encouraging in times of despair ( which is usual when stuck in front of a computer programe for hours). This book explains everything very well and simply and therefore helps beginners and people who are not familar with this kind of program.

Data Analysis Using SPSS for Windows.......2001-12-29
If you haven't used statistics since college or graduate school and if you are unfamiliar with SPSS but want an excellent introduction to SPSS, this is a must have book. It is truly a beginners book for SPSS for windows. This is not a book that explains statistical concepts, it is a book about SPSS and how to use it in the real world. For those of us that don't like thick books this is a thin volume, only about 220 pages. But Foster crams a lot of useful, practical information into his thin volumn. Get it and you won't regret it.

Product Description
James Purdy's most important book. Uncommon and overlooked! The dynastic struggle between two great dynasties and the woman who rules them.
Book Description
Gore Vidal's 2005 feature profile of James Purdy in the Sunday New York Times Book Review signaled the long overdue arrival of a major literary cult hero into the American canon. Purdy is one of the last surviving, original, post-war pioneers of transgressive fiction—in line with the Beats, Norman Mailer, Terry Southern, and John Rechy.
Jeremy's Vision is the first volume of Purdy's Sleepers in Moon-Crowded Valleys trilogy. It is Purdy's classic novel about a dysfunctional Midwestern family and the struggle between two great dynasties, particularly among the women who rule them.

Zarjaz!.......2007-09-12
Slaine from the begining... and its pretty cool, before simon bisley, glen farby, greg staples and clint langley (a few among many others) left their artistic mark on the series, Mike McMahon and Massimo Belardinelli worked with writer Pat Mills to create one of 2000 A.D.'s greatest chracters since Joe Dredd!
The story of slaine takes place in the land of the young(ireland), where magic and life by the sword, ax, spear and sheild rule supreme. Join slaine and his sleaze little personal little pest and scribe Ukko as they battle the old horned god and other strange creatures, demons, witches and the like.
A Great Introduction into the world of Slaine.......2007-07-03
This book is a great introduction into the world of Slaine. Whether you are a fan of the comic series or into the role-playing game, this book is a great spring-board into the story. I am playing a Celtic based game of D20 Dungeons and Dragons using Slaine RPG and I bought this as a good read for people new to the campaign in order to quickly bring them up to speed. This book also has a useful map and glossary for newbies as well. The artwork is a little varied. Ukko becomes settled into his usual ugly self but although Slaine goes through 2 or 3 different drawings, it still has not settled on the later Slaine style that I know and love. Still, a good read and a worthy start to the whole saga.
Slaine - Irish Hero.......2006-03-23
One of my all time favorite 2000AD characters, while the artwork is not up to the Simon Bisley progs of later years, this well drawn B&W book gives you lots of insights into Ukko, Niamh, and The Lord Weird Slough Feg. The book also has a nice guide to Slaines world, with a map and a glossary of words and terms used throughout the book. Originally printed in 1983/1984. Progs 330-360
An excellent adition to any fan's collection.......2005-11-01
This graphic novel is an excellent read. The artwork is typically fantastic and the story flow likewise. Artistic styles vary between the two, and tastes will affect their appeal, but the overall product was exceptionally enjoyable.

In Bobby's Girl, brilliant young filmmaker Bobby Albertson found his true love, a beautiful blonde who is out of this world--literally. Now, she's taking him back home to meet the folks.
Customer Reviews:
No, thanks........2006-10-09
This is a sequel to Bobby's Girl that, in my opinion, could have been much better. The returning of Ket with Bobby and family is a good nail to hang a story on but the author wrote the wrong story.
When Ket and the others return, Thradon is being invaded by other aliens they cannot understand or deal with (with a few expected exceptions) and only the humans can find out why. Ho hum. Not well done.
I think author should have kept with the title premise and told the story that Ket, Bobby, and his parents were dreaming about at the end of Bobby's Girl; the bringing of golf and the movies to Thradon. The problems, reactions of the populace and other entertainment industries, etc., would have made for a more interesting book.
This gets two stars from me for the humor, not for the story.

Bobby's Girl Back Home.......2005-08-15
Kathy, A.K.A. Ket, is returning home to her planet. With her is her husband Bobby, his friends and his family. They are going to introduce Thradon to movies and golf. Just before they arrive, the recovering government has sent out a team to thradonform another planet.
While Ket, Bobby and the other humans are welcomed with open arms, the science team on the other planet has been attacked and occupied by another alien race. Bobby and Ket turn Thradon upside down by introducing Shakespeare to the theater market while getting the movie industry started. Everything seems rosy and the changes are good. Then the fate of the thradonforming expedition is learned and its off to the rescue.
A very nice and fun follow-up to BOBBY'S GIRL. The action is good without being too heavy. The drama remains serious without compromising the feel-good nature of the book. All in all a pretty fun read and a must for those who enjoyed BOBBY'S GIRL.

Outstanding book........2007-07-25
I use it for everyhting when I can. Its a little hard getting the correct measurments. I love it and should be a a staple in every jamaican household.
Great presentation and user friendly.......2007-05-24
I am Jamaican and know how to make some Jamaican dishes, but wanted to learn new recipes. I found this book to be very user friendly with recipes that are well known, as well as some lesser known ones. For the reviewer who said there isn't a recipe for oxtail, may I point you to page 101, right next to the one for curried goat.
Authentic Island Cooking. The Title Speaks Truth!.......2007-03-12
Totally what I expect in a cook book from start to finish. It was very user friendly with the vocabulary, history and step by step instructions from the market to the pot. In the end ...authentic Jamaican cuisine. Anyone can use this cook book and enjoy the flavors of Jamaica. This was a hit for me!
Cooking Up Delicious Meals the Jamaican Way.......2007-02-18
The other day I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.
THE REAL TASTE OF JAMAICA is one of the books I kept. The book starts out with an A to Z introduction of Jamaican foods which is extremely helpful to someone who wants to make authentic tasting Jamaican dishes. I've been living in the Caribbean on and off for the last decade and consider myself somewhat of a gourmet cook and I'm here to tell you this is one of the best books on Caribbean cooking out there.
The Fricasseed Chicken on page 79 is a favorite of my hubby's and pretty easy to fix as is the Jerk Chicken on the same page and as the author's say about jerk chicken, "It's the combination of the seasoning that gives the jerk its unique flavour." That's the truth and if you follow the seasoning in these recipes to the letter, you'll turn out mouthwatering meals. I tend to experiment, but never the first time with a recipe, because I want to see what the cook/writer had in mind with his/her recipe. Most of the recipes in this book are spot on. I don't mess with them very much.

Wonderful, tasty, educational -- array and variety of Jamaican cooking.......2006-12-10
Some people have limited views of what Jamaican cooking is. Some have preconceived notions, based on what their own grandmothers or fathers best liked to cook and eat, about what must or must not be in a Jamaican cookbook. Please set such thinking aside and open this book. It is a pleasure and every single recipe I have tried is spot on and well written. You will cook good food with this.
Like a reviewer below, I was disappointed not to see an oxtail recipe, and I would have liked to have seen some Jamaican-Chinese foods, but that is a small issue in that one book cannot touch on every single thing and still be affordable and usable. Every other recipe I was ever familiar with is there and plenty more besides. Donaldson also weaves in a bit of cross-cultural comparison and some history (i.e., some people call them 'johnny cakes' others 'fried dumplings'; or, breadfruit came to Jamaica on Capt. Bligh's ship to feed the slaves, but the slaves initially wouldn't eat it and it was fed to the hogs for a few generations before cooks began to use it) -- all very interesting and none of it detracts from the ease of reading and using the recipes.
I introduced this book to my Jamaican born-bred-and-raised mum and aunties, including one award-winning cook, who all loved the book so much and were reminded of recipes they'd not used or food they'd not cooked in decades and all four went out to buy their own copy. Each year one or more of these Jamaican women living abroad think of someone else they want to share this cookbook with, so each Christmas a stack are ordered and wrapped!
Buy this. Use this. Love the food.

Stretch Exercises for Your Horse: The Path to Perfect Suppleness.......2007-05-16
Very informative. I learned how to stretch the muscle so that the horse was more supple and less likely be to injury in competition and everyday use
An Important Step to Riding Well.......2007-05-10
One of the greatest mistakes riders make is not preparing their horses to rider. They just jump on and go. They don't warm the horses up or stretch them after they have worked to keep muscles supple. Then they wonder why their horses become lame or injured. The stretches suggested in this book are a great way to treat your horse like the athlete he is.
Great reference.......2007-05-02
For whoever said there is nothing new in this book you must be a very proficient and contentiousness horse person. I found this book pack full of goodies. Perhaps there is nothing "new" for you, but for most horse owners it is a fantastic book.
It has clear illustrations of all the stretches and explanations about why you do them. I also find this a good book for taking out to the barn and working through with my horses.
They enjoy the change from being ridden and the exercises also make good warm up and cool downs. They are the basic exercises but you don't really need to learn 999 different exercises. Just do the ones in this book well.
Equine Stretching Routines.......2007-04-12
Learn your horse's anatomy and put your new knowledge to work as you train your horse and develop stretching routines.
VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND........2007-04-10
ALREADY KNOWN EXERCISES,NOTHING NEW.... ANYWAY A GOOD CONFIRMATION. VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND.

Paint It Black: A Novel
ASIN: 1586481568
Release Date: 2002-11-12 |
Book Description
Warren Brown grew up in segregated New Orleansblack, Catholic, middle class. Martha McNeil was from segregated white and blue-collar Houston. It was the 1960s and integration was becoming the law of the land, but it wasn't the reality for either of them.
Both Warren and Martha were "affirmative action hires" at The Washington Post in the early 1970s and worked together for more than twenty years, sharing the ups and downs of life, becoming friends. Then Warren became sick with kidney disease. A kidney donated to him by his wife failed. He was on the verge of death when Martha, informed she was also a blood type match, donated a kidney to her friend.
Warren and Martha chronicled their experiences surrounding the surgery in a series of articles written for the Post. To them, it was a simple story of friendship, a successful operation, and a happy ending. But in the extraordinary outpouring of favorable reaction to their story, especially among blacks, they discovered that it was something more: it was a success story about integration.
Now, in a new book, the friends tell the whole story: of their childhoods in the segregated South, of their meeting and deepening friendship, of Warren's brush with death and Martha's decision to help save his life. Intimate, poignant, and laced with humor, Black & White & Red All Over chronicles the miraculous intersection of two lives that, but for the changes in American society of the last half-century, would never have occurred.
Customer Reviews:
An Intimate and Poignant Friendship Memoir.......2003-03-30
Martha McNeil Hamilton and Warren Brown built a friendship over more than twenty years of working together at The Washington Post. What is remarkable about their story is not that they are friends in spite of race (Hamilton is white, Brown is black), but that they have shared a life and death journey.
In November 2001, Hamilton gave Brown one of her kidneys and her generous act saved his life and made their friendship more than just a collegial bond. Brown's kidney transplant and how he and Hamilton came to their decisions is the central story of BLACK & WHITE & RED ALL OVER. Yet this memoir of their friendship accomplishes much more.
Both journalists are members of the baby boom generation born in the Jim Crow South. As they write, "We came to the Post in the middle of a revolution." In writing about their individual lives they provide a personal view of segregation, integration, women's integration into the workforce and even AIDS. Though the focus is clearly on their growing friendship and the transplant, these personal vignettes bring the book to life. And as the nation reconsiders policies such as affirmative action, Hamilton and Brown make it clear that they got in the door with such considerations and they stand behind the idea. They are also honest about why management can sometimes fail in carrying out the idea and therefore sour others on its promise: "The management [at the Post] had been so good at discriminating against blacks and women that at first it had a hard time discriminating amongst them."
Other tales, like that of Hamilton's post-divorce depression and Brown's concerns about his son, are more touching than historic. These moments ease the reading and provide buffers to the more complex information about kidney disease, renal failure and the dangerous miracle of organ transplants.
This friendship memoir also raises questions about how we view such bonds. When does the person you've worked with for years become a true friend? And as we spend more and more time at work, whether it's real time or time via email, cell phones and PDA devices, how do we successfully integrate work and family? For Hamilton and Brown, work and family have nearly become one, which created a broad network of support as the two readied for the transplant surgery.
It's unfortunate that a story about friends of different races sharing in this way is still extraordinary. Hopefully Hamilton and Brown are evidence of the existence of more cross-racial and cross-cultural friendships. Otherwise, what kind of revolution was it after all?

Perfect Book for the Holiday Season.......2002-11-19
This is a terrific book....full of inspiration, love, hope....it describes a real, true and enduring friendship...between two unlikely people and how far one friend was willing to go to save the other. But, in the end, the book is about much more than friendship, its about how far we have come as a collective society--without some of the social progress of the last forty years or so, one man's life (and perhaps many more) might have been cut short; as a result of his friendship with a woman from a distinctly different background, he received an organ that has aided in extending his life a bit longer.
Both authors are dynamic, interesting people and the writing style is very accessible.
There is something for everyone in this book, whether you like biography, are interested in race relations, organ transplant, friendship, journalists, civil rights/affirmative action....whether you're a writer, a doctor, or just a friend....this is a book that I believe a lot of different people will treasure.
