Book Description
The complete text of Roberts' last historical novel, presented for the first time with contemporary--and conflicting--accounts of the shipwreck on which the novel was based.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2004-09-26
This is a solid story, well written. I am glad I read it and recommend it to others.
A good book with a clear focus and excellent research.......1999-06-13
This book, while not one of Roberts's finest, is still a well-researched mini-masterpiece. It's depiction of real people in seemingly unreal conditions instead of themes on several levels works well for what it sets out to do.
a good book.......1999-05-11
This is a must read book for those of you who like historical novels. It is about a ship that has wrecked on an island off the coast of Maine and how the crew survives. This book is written with the historical preciseness that Arundel and Northwest Passage are written with. This is one of the greatest historical novels

Book Description
"The attendants looked down and could see his face thicken, broaden to a wide oval, then almost melt away before their eyes. They watched the continual swift distortions with rapt trepidation, and then noticed his clothes were stretching, bulging at the seams and then splitting into ragged shreds of cloth. His eyes, meanwhile, had turned a glistening yellow, and fangs began to emerge from the corners of his mouth." The terror that grips Roger Kolak is only part of this bone-chilling tale that is both centuries old and eternally new. The nightmarish world of the werebeast is one of unspoken horrors and shocking transformations. A frightening story of good and evil and the fear that man's true bestial nature lurks within his soul, Kolak of the Werebeasts is a story of our time that reaches out to the imagination of centuries past.

Best Book On Werewolfism.......2004-08-04
This was a great book! One of the best on the subject. It was all about a man who turns into a tiger and then tries to find a cure. There were several more transformations included in the book, including a man who turns into a bear, a woman who becomes a hyena and many more. It was refreshing to read a book on werewolfism that goes beyond the boring, cliched werewolf. Apparently, it is believed people turn into the most dangerous animal of their particular region. The technical term for it is clinical lycanthropy and is also known as therianthropy, the act of a human being turning into an animal. The book included so much information about werewolfism, transformation, witches, werebeasts, and shamans! There was even information on a possible medical solution to the problem. I highly recommend it, especially on a dark, rainy night.

Book Description
California has become the hottest wine producing area in the world, and it happened in less than 25 years. Now the acclaimed Wine Spectator columnist and critic Matt Kramer traces the dramatic progress of the California winemaking industry--the who, how, why, what, and where. No one is better equipped to provide insight into the ways in which West Coast vintners are working to create extraordinary wines, and to explain the myriad developments in character, quality, and technology that have taken place. Kramer's book provides the first comprehensive look at how new approaches to wine making have contributed to California's current high status in the world order of wine.
Customer Reviews:
California Wine Simplified........2007-04-08
By far, the most complete and easily read book of its type. It puts all of the recent changes in the California AVA's in perspective.
I've read it, I've used it, I drank it (well, not really).......2006-11-10
I have already nipped into this book several times, especially before trips to nearby Santa Barbara wine country, and Kramer has never steered me wrong yet. Based on his recommendations, I experienced some great wines at Foley and Longoria - not really a GUIDE BOOK per se, no fancy graphics or easy to turn to index pages, but Kramer does have his own wine guide for this. I highly recommend for wino-folks living right here on the left coast.
Excellent and Entertaining Info on California Wine.......2005-09-28
Matt Kramer's New California Wine starts with a section that describes the thinking and mentalities behind the California wine industry (he named this part "Thinking California"). He then goes on to describe California's American Viticultural Areas (AVA) and different activities going on in each in a part named "Drinking California". He mentions quite a number of wineries - in ways that offer details that go beyond the usual, dry descriptions often found elsewhere. The "Thinking California" part of the book provides the reader with an excellent overview of the state of California wines - the thinking that has evolved the European wine mentality/tradition as opposed to the California approach to the crafting of fine wines. Kramer's writing style is quite entertaining - he's descriptive with word choices that vividly portray California. At the start of key parts of the book he sets the scene with a quote and then moves into descriptions that inform and entertain. In "Thinking California" his insights into changes and evolutions that have transpired in California wines through descriptions of the history, the wine plant, the climate, and the soil provide an overview helpful when thinking about California wines. In "Drinking California" he gives descriptions of areas (AVA) and different wine operations. Quite a lot of detail that I'll use when planning my next visit to California - the kind of detail one might want when doing advance planning - necessary when visiting wineries. As a native Californian who now lives in Europe I've tried to answer questions about California wines - what I've learned from Mr. Kramer gives an understanding of and a perspective about California wines that I'll find helpful. I'm glad I bought the book and consider its price to be a good investment.

This is a very excellent informative book on how to groom. I highly reccomend it!
NOT TO INFORMATIVE.......2006-10-13
NICE BOOK IF YOU ONLY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO BATHE, TRIM EARS OR CLIP NAILS. DOESNT TELL YOU WHAT SIZE ATTACHMENTS TO USE OR WHAT PART OF THE BODY TO USE THE DIFFERENT ATTACHMENTS.ITS BETTER IF YOU HAVE A POODLE, MORE PAGES DEVOTED TO IT. ONLY ONE PER OTHER DOG!
good for groomers not Kennel Clippers.......2006-03-24
IF you need a book to learn how to start Kennel clipping, do not buy this one.
IF you want to be a groomer in a city and work in someone else's shop then go for it.
I do strip clips and summer clips so this book was not very helpful to me in that area.
Not great, but not bad either........2005-12-12
I use this book for my clients to look at while picking their dogs new hair cut. The book leaves out some breeds but covers most, and has faily good drawings. There still are better books out there.

I think Jan Foulke is the leading authority on doll collecting. This is a great book for beginners. It gives great advice on what to look for in a quality doll. The dolls condition can be just as important as its rarity etc... This book is not thick, but has great tips and advice. I would recommended any book by Jan Foulke. She also sells dolls on Ebay.

Customer Reviews:
Drab, dark , little quilts.......2007-05-09
I was rather disappointed with this book. None of the quilts really stuck out as something I would like to make.... And the colors were drab: dark red, green and ochre. Only a few projects were cute enough for me to look at twice. I think I will be donating my copy to the public library in the near future.
Debbie Mumm Is the Best.......2005-03-31
Wow, What a great price and fast shipping. This book is beautiful. I have most of Debbie Mumm's books but I didn't have this one. I love to do her projects. Her books have made me the quilter I have become over the last 10-15 years. Her books are easy to read and the instructions are easy to follow. A beginner can pick up any book and complete a project. I do several of her projects a year. I have given away many, many items made from her books. It is my favorite gift to give someone. Now with this new book I will be start something new. Thank you to Debbie Mumm. Your projects are fun and you are the best.
Gorgeous Book.......2001-09-24
This book is another gorgeous creation from the very talented Debbie Mumm! She has written this book in a very clear easy to understand style. The projects are lovely and range from decorating timber trays to making wallhangings to an absolutely gorgeous shower curtain. Debbie takes us through her own home, as well as those of her friends, and shows us complete rooms and how to make all of the projects in the room. I love this book and appreciate the clear, concise instructions for each project. There is even a guide to the fabrics Debbie has used in each item as well as basic instructions on how to complete your projects with either machine or hand quilting techniques.
Debbie Mumm's most comprehensive book.......2001-07-13
I have read several of Debbie Mumm's books, but this is the only one I actually own. It is filled with useful and beautiful ideas for quilts, wallhangings, accessories such as pot holders and other decorative items. At $... for 288 pages it is also by far the best value Debbie Mumm book. There are wonderful applique shapes to use for a variety of projects, and all seasons are covered. My only objection is that I wish projects were shown in several color schemes. She loves rich red, green, blue and gold (which are fine) but I would have liked to see a more varied color scheme throughout. Well worth the money nonetheless.
Maravilhoso!.......2000-06-08
Foi o meu primeiro livro de patchwork,e fiquei encantada ! Trabalhos lindos,passo-a-passo fácil de entender e um resultado maravilhoso! AMEI!

Book Description
Mind Fields was originally conceived as a collection of Jacek Yerka's paintings, but when Harlan Ellison was approached to write the introduction, he was so overcome that instead he penned a short story for each piece. The result of this synergistic melding of talents, Mind Fields shows two masters at their best. Each of the nearly three dozen stories in this volume is completely unlike any of the others, and together they contain a rich panoply of pathos, humor, and wonder. Produced in a beautiful cloth edition worthy of the art within, Mind Fields is a unique item and a must for any Ellison fan.

Customer Reviews:
Ellison is redundant in this book.......2005-11-08
I admire Yerka's paintings, but I agree with some of the reviewers here that those stories by Ellison may distort or ruin what Yerka wanted to say. Those stories just don't go well with the paintings.
Ellison completely misses that warm Eastern-European feel that one can get from Yerka's paintings. That actually why some people from the western world may find it hard to get a feel of what Yerka tried to show. Just visit Yerka's official page on the internet!
As a comment to an earlier review by some reader (from December 16, 1997) I have to say that the car transformed to a lizard on the cover of the book is not Volkswagen beetle. The make of the car is "Pobeda", it was made in the 50s in USSR and Poland. Only people with high status in society could afford to have such a car then.
Perhaps a good one for Ellison fans.......2004-09-11
Yerka's paintings capture many things. In the most literal sense, one (e.g. Afternoon with the Grimm brothers) might include a cat, antique block planes, what looks like an old tube TV, a workbench-turning-piano, and possibly the monster under the bed. The detail goes on, and many of his paintings present the same collections of oddities, neatly arrayed like words on a page. Others (including Please Don't Slam the Door, Foraging in the Field, and Eruption) suggest an uneasy truce between the things of man and the forces of nature. Yet others (Susan, for example) imply intimacy between people, and with the world.
In too many cases, though, I see the catalog of Yerka's personal icons arrayed across the page, and feel as if the picture's meaning is not meant for me. Perhaps his personal language is too personal. For whatever reason, the imagery says very little to me.
Harlan Ellison, on the other hand, says far too much. Most of this book alternates pages, Ellison's writing on the left and Yerka's painting on the right, plus commentary by Ellison at the end of the book. Long ago, Ellison's favortie topic became Ellison, and I was no longer able to enjoy his writing. I would have liked the book better with Ellison's part missing.
Yerka's work is competent; some people may find it legible. Ellison has a following, and those readers are sure to find something here to like. Unfortunately, I am not in either group.

still my favorite.......1999-11-24
The day I stumbled on this book, I was merely looking for a fantasy art collection with pretty pictures. As I plunged into the book, realizing what it was really about, I couldn't and, to date, haven't put it down. That was five years ago. Never has a collection such as this forced me to continually look into and out of each picture in order to find something new. Both Ellison's and Yerka's imagination form a synergy unrivaled in this genre. While I have since collected another collection of Yerka's art, I have snatched everyhthing I can find from Ellison. While I am often drawn into each of his stories with a similar intensity, ("The Beast that Shouted. . . " is my current favorite) none of his work affects me as much as "To Each His Own", "Foraging in the Fields", "Amok Harvest", "Darkness Falls. . ." and most others in this collection. For a quick jaunt into the minds of these two artists, I thoroughly recommend this book. For those new to Ellison, his author notes at the end of the book give a brief view of some of his opinions of the Real World.
my last name is yerka too:).......1999-07-26
my last name is yerka so i think its cool:)...b/c not that many people have the last name of yerka.
Ellison ruins Yerka's vision.......1999-07-04
I am a big fan of surrealism and fantastiqueism, and I love some science fiction (Stanislaw Lem, early Robert Heinlein, etc.). I've always liked Yerka. In this case, however, I liked every single painting less after reading the Ellison story inspired by it. Ellison's style is similar in both content and smartass writing style to the early works of Heinlein, but they destroy the mysterious, inexplicable, and most importantly, AMBIGUOUS quality of all of Yerka's paintings.

Book Description
First published in Japanese in San Francisco in 1931, The Four Immigrants Manga is a documentary comic book and the author's chronicle of his immigrant experiences in the United States. Arriving in 1904, Henry and his three pals work as houseboys, labor in the fields, and are shaken by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. They also suffer considerable discrimination. Drawn in the comic-book style of George McManus's clasic "Bringing Up Father," this heartfelt tale is an accurate depiction of early Asian-American struggles and a document of great historical interest.
Customer Reviews:
Historical Biography .......2006-06-09
This was a very interesting read, although the jokes themselves were rarely funny due to the difficulty of translating puns. It stands out mostly as a sort of documentary about Japanese immigrants in San Fransisco, specifically worker-students. We watch them struggle to find jobs in strange American homes, a social commentary about gambling and the evils thereof, a six to eight page story of the San Fransisco Earthquake, and building their families.
I found it especially interesting to read the notes after each two-page "chapters" in the back of the book, which added depth to what was happening and provided historical content as well as further describing conditions in San Fransisco at that time.
Comments were made at the beginning of the book that the cartoonist had limited his market because he was writing strictly for fellow immigrants, who would best understand the mixture of Japanese and English that he used in his writing. This is denoted throughout the book with shaky letters for English, which immigrants had difficulty following and plain type-set for regular Japanese, their birth tongue.
As for the artwork, think more old-school Japanese and American comics than the manga that is popular today-- don't be expecting tick marks or sweatdrops for example!
For me especially this had a lot of fond memories. I am not Japanese, but my family moved to San Fransisco in the early nineteen hundreds from Italy, so a lot of this made me remember stories about my great grandfather and my great grandmother. Even if you don't buy this book for the humor, at least consider the purchase to read about immigrants to America in the 1900's.
A Very Rare Glimpse.......2000-04-13
Henry Kiyama created this terrific book in the 1930's, chronicling the lives of four young Japanese immigrants and their struggle to find work and acceptance in San Francisco at the turn of the century. It was unearthed and translated into English, giving us all the rare privelege of a glimpse into the immigrant experience of that era. Drawn in a simple and lighthearted style and told with insight and depth, Kiyama, along with the rising popularity of Japanese Anime and Manga, reinforces the notion that comics are not just for kids anymore. A great read for a comic lover, a hyphenated-American or anyone interested in the multihued experience of our country.

If you're not used to reading comics, this will seem rough and not particularly funny. Readers more familiar with the form will recognize that this book is more subtle and better crafted than your typical comic.
It's of special interest to Japanese Americans and others interested in the immigrant experience in the USA.
