Much better than THE RUN, which was the first book about Will Lee, and this one is the story of an ex-CIA boy deciding who needs to die. Excellent story that will keep you riveted until the last page and continued in a Holly Barker novel, IRON ORCHID. Before you read IRON ORCHID, read the Holly Barker novels that precede this one, ORCHID BEACHE, ORCHID BLUES, AND BLOOD ORCHID. The story line is all tied in. I love the way Dino and Stone are brought into these books in minor ways...we know the characters and love to hear from them in each book. Woods is a skilled master and every story is enjoyable...

Joe Wilson is the President, Valerie Plame runs the CIA, her primary objective is to get a pardon for her friend and mentor, who was blackmailed over sex with underage girls (this part is breathtakingly Clintonesque) into working for KGB and who is serving his sentence now.
Some retired CIA pinko vigilante assassinates Jesse Helms, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Novak, Pat Robertson, William Rehnquist and Newt Gingrich.
Everything comes out like a dream, really: every good person is in love and has the most satisfying sex of his/her life, Valerie's friend gets the pardon, the pinko vigilante gets away with murder, the CIA is still penetrated by the Russians - the life is truly beautiful.
There is only one small cloud in the bright sky: Pat Robertson survived the assassiantion.

Having read another Woods book (I am a fan through and through) although the last one that I read (Iron Orchid) was not that great, this one was better. An older novel that introduced Teddy Fay, who continues his quest for the best in Iron Orchid...I found this one to be really good, and something that I am used to Woods writing....reall interesting, good story!!
Unbearable..........2004-08-22
This may very well be the worst novel I have ever read. It reminded me of the hokey mysteries I used to write in my free time when I was in elementary school. This author (Stuart Woods) has absolutely no knowledge of human relationships or how to accurately and believably portray them. He makes a dinner between a married couple sound like a Pentagon intelligence briefing. Not a single moment of the dialogue ever comes close to being believable.
It is clear that this novel was written in a weekend and that no research of any kind was done. It is beyond me where Mr. Woods got his information about the interworking of American government. The President of the United States essentially acts as a local police chief, being called everytime a piece of evidence is found and holding press conferences to announce arrests. Even more ridiculously, we are asked to believe that an expert CIA agent who never leaves a trace would be stupid enough to use his best friend's name as an alias. We are also supposed to believe that the investigators would look at a list of hundreds of names and randomly pick out the killer by chance on the first try. The most inane premise by far is that the killer runs a website in which he lists all his victims. When the FBI finally decides to trace the website, they can't do it because he changes the server every day. The author expects us to buy that the nation's top investigations unit can't track an amateur website because he changes it every DAY?
Now on to the plot. In addition to the worst written novel I have ever read, this is the worst developed novel I have ever come across. Instead of focusing on a few central characters, Woods decides to bring in about about 30 "main" characters. In addition, none of them are ever developed whatsoever and the reader begins to forget who any of them are and doesn't really care. A subplot will be developed for an entire 30 pages and then will never be mentioned again. It's almost like parts of the book were written when the author was using some kind of hallucinogen. A dialogue will ensue between 2 characters who were never introduced, the dialogue will make no sense and mean nothing to the reader, then the characters and their story will never be alluded to again. And, of course, the central plot is never even resolved or explained. Not a mention is ever made as to why the man is assassinating these people other than the fact that he is a liberal and they are conservatives.
It is mind-boggling that this man has made millions of dollars and owns 4 mansions. In closing, a truly wretched book that should only be read for the sheer (and frequent) laughter that will ensue from the juvenile plot and inept writing.
My first Will Lee novel!.......2004-06-21
Having read all of Woods' Stone Barrington novels, I had no doubts that this book would be anything but great!
Will Lee is the President of the United States, and his wife is the head of the CIA. Though they are advertised as the main charaters, I didn't feel that their parts were that involved in the storyline.
To quickly sum up the story, a highly trained assassin is killing very prominent figures in the US government. Throughout the story you will follow those trying to track down this crazed man/woman, as they race this mad person before he/she kills others. And as I hate to give away too much information, just know that this book is a fast read that you will not be able to put down until the end.

Admittedly, the very concept of Superman racing the Flash is childishly corny. However the stories here are still fun to read, especially if you grew up reading any silver age comics at all. The best stories are the original race by Jim Shooter and the modern homage to it by Dan Jurgens.

This book could be reduced to one half or one third pages. The '115 great tasting' wines part of this book is essentially a repetition of the same basic formula over and over with only a few wines with some variation from one to the next. Basic operations are described, but I was hoping for a bit more of fine pointers. It is a good starter basic book. But save a few trees and streamline at the risk of looking like there is no content, or add some.
Best Beginners Book Out There.......2007-03-21
As a newcomer to home winemaking I found this book to be well organized, well writen and informative. It has all the details necessary to do the job properly without being overly technical. The author has a list of all the necessary equipment and a list of things that are "nice to have." I did some research on the author and he is recognized as one of the premier wine experts in the country.
For Grape Growers.......2006-12-27
This is a book from my Christmas List and is great if you want recipes on how to convert all your grapes in to wine. However, if you are looking for a book that provides you with technical information about wine making, and a substantial number of country wines, you may need to look elsewhere. It was hard to review because although it has a great selection of grape recipes, it lacks the detail I was looking for on how to make wine, and develop wine recipes from scratch, unless I missed it.

A valuable adjunct to any winemaker's library.......2001-06-12
Gene Spaziani and Ed Halloran have written a book that needed to be written. The first three chapters are the obligatory "how to make wine" chapters ("Getting Started," "Essential How-Tos" and "Wine from Kits"). These have been done better by others, but the book would be incomplete without them.
The meat of this book begins with chapter 4, "Wine from Concentrates." And what a chapter it is, covering 13 specific white wine concentrates (Chenin Blanc to Vino Blanc) and 13 specific red wine concentrates (Barbera to Zinfandel), with recipes and step-by-step instructions for each (all suspiciously similar, but if the shoe fits....).
Chapter 5 is "Wine from Juices," and it does a superb job with 15 white grape juices (Chardonnay to Vidal Blanc), 15 red grape juices (Barbera to Zinfandel again, but many in between are different) and one blush.
Chapter 6, "White Wine from Grapes," covers 20 great grapes, from Aurora French-American Hybrid to Vidal Blanc French-American Hybrid, with some real classics in between. Chapter 7 is predictably "Red Wine from Grapes," covering another 20 grapes from Alicante-Bouschet to--again--Zinfandel, but the in-betweens are both classic and unusual.
Chapter 8, "Wine from Fruit," offers up 14 classic non-grape wines--from Apple to Strawberry. I found some of the ingredients thought-provoking(Epsom salts, for example, in fresh-crushed apple juice), but I found their choices of yeast less than inspiring (their heavy reliance on sweet mead yeast was a bit unimaginative, in my opinion).
Chapter 9, "Sparkling and Fortified Wines," offers a very good primer on these subjects, with more emphasis on the latter than the former. Chapter 10 is "Trouble-Shooting," but this, like the first three chapters, has been done better by others.
Criticisms aside, this book is a valuable adjunct to any winemaker's library. Where else can you find recipes for Cayuga French-American Hybrid, Lemberger red or Morio Muskat, all in the same volume? You can bet my copy is already well-thumbed....

Stylish sweaters that fit the dog!.......2007-05-07
I love this author. LOVE. I've made two of the sweaters and plan to make another. Her designs range from something basic a beginner could tackle to projects advanced knitters enjoy producing. She explains how to get the right fit if the three sizes she offers aren't quite right. The dog I was knitting for is a hard fit in *everything* my friend tries to buy him because he's not really a large and not really a medium. After taking the various measurements and adjusting the pattern in just the right places, "Andy" now looks great. This was an exercise for me in "adjusting" patterns before I tackle an Aran for my husband so the little Aran in the book was perfect for my needs. Can't wait to make the party dress.
The only warning I would give is that these patterns aren't for truly big dogs. The patterns can be adjusted, but most folks with a big dog aren't going to find a pattern ready to go in here. A beagle is her medium size.
Keeping Your Dog Warm (and fashionable).......2006-10-29
The book features a variety of styles to suit all tastes and to fit different sizes of dogs. There's a cable stitch sweater, an Icelandic design, and others plus some blankets and a pillow for your dog. The directions seem very detailed.
The book starts off with instructions for measuring your dog and adjusting the patterns. It continues with a glossary and 5 pages of basic techniques before plunging into the actual patterns.
The photos are charmers showing dogs modeling the outfits. The author even throws in a recipe for a flea shampoo and doggie snacks. Sprinkled throughout the book is trivia about dogs (popular dog names, quotations, background on the models). The dogs modeling the knitted projects are just adorable.
I'm giving this as a gift to a neigbor who is talented with handwork. Her two dogs will look adorable in these outfits.
Sloppy Writing/Proofreading.......2006-07-31
This is a sloppily written book full of errors. I had to rip out most of the basketweave cardigan on page 29 because the number of stitches instructed by one section of the pattern does not match the number specified in another paragraph. The patterns seem written to save print space at the expense of clarity and accuracy. I am an experienced (15+ years)knitter, and I found the instructions to be very complicated to follow, requiring the knitter to write the pattern out in longhand so not to miss any steps. This pattern was even described as "perfect for a beginning knitter". Buy this book for the cute pictures if you like, but if you decide to knit from it, work the pattern out on paper first.
Great Patterns; Wrong Sizes.......2005-10-10
I thought the patterns were fun and was anxious to make many of them; however, the patterns sizes were no where near what I needed for my Chihuahua. Even so my Chihuahua is of the portly/chubby type, the sizes were still too big. I consider myself an intermediate knitter; yet in all honesty, having to re-guage a pattern, change the cast-on, the measurements, the inc's, dec's, etc etc etc is too much of a bother. Don't get me wrong, I always gauge my work and if I have to adjust a few sts here and there and/or change ndl sizes, I'm ok with that... I just don't want to reinvent the whole pattern.
Sizes in the book.......2005-09-28
While there are some interesting sweaters in this book, her concept of SIZE is so far off, that the book was of no use to me. She is calling a size small, 14 1/2 inches around a dog. This is big on my full grown dachshund, would never work for a chihuahua or other dog considered a small dog. Also the length for a small dog is 12 inches according to her, my smaller sized dogs are around 8 or 9 inches long. The shaping of the basic sweaters would never work for a male dog, and it goes all the way back to the haunches. The other patterns in the book are equally "off" for small or even medium small dogs.

This book covers the design elements and construction of Shaker styled furniture. It also lightly covers the history.
There are several plans, unfortunately not the one on the cover. But, it should not be too hard to take what's in the book and create a plan for it as sizes are given.
Some more plans covering the gallery items, especially the cover item, would have been nice. But, overall it is a really good book.

It's rare that something that looks at first glance like a "coffee table book" that should be admired largely for its pictures but that also contains such a thoughtful and illuminating text.
There is no other book that shows as clearly how the Shakers connected practicality and simplicity with elegance and harmony of design. The photographs are subtle, understated but quite lovely to linger over.
It's easy to dismiss the Shakers as a fringe group, and few up us would embrace their doctrine of celibacy. But June Sprigg documents the appeal of their fundamental values: Do all your work as if it was to last for 1,000 years, but live your life as if you knew that the Judgment Day was coming tomorrow. Her ability to articulate this apparent paradox makes this a spiritually moving book.
Buy it as a gift for anyone interested in design, or with a serious interest in religion. And be sure to order two copies--you'll want one yourself.

A beautiful book..........2000-04-06
Shaker: Life, Work and Art is a beautiful book. I first saw acopy several years ago and was disappointed to learn that thehardcover version was out of print. The book has short narrative sections that provide insight into Shaker history, work, and communal and spiritual life. One section captures a "typical" day in the life of the Brethren and Sisters. The enlarged font is easy on the eyes and the top of each narrative page is headed by the famous Shaker wall pegs. The narrative sections are separated by numerous pages of high quality, well-captioned color photographs of Shaker crafts, furniture, and architecture. Lots of beautiful pictures! The Shakers legacy still seems to have a profound impact on our contemporary lives in spite of (or perhaps because of) the simplicity of their work and their unusual communal way of life. Although this book does not present a comprehensive history of the Shakers, it does an admirable job of providing an insight into the lives of these interesting people. This book is deserving of any coffee table and should get a lot of attention in your household. END

This wonderful book features historic Shaker style crafts and old-style Shaker recipes for both adults and children. Some of the crafts and recipes require intermediate skills or better so the book is really for those 9 years old and up.

I bought this from Amazon over 2 years ago (just getting around to rating it :)) and it is still near the top of my read pile. This book has made me want to collect the entire series. Top quality.
Huge Collection.......2002-06-05
This book is absolutely huge and well worth the money. It is crammed full of amazing fantastic and science fiction images. There is a large variety of subjects that will fascinate anyone with a love for the fantastic. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves art. In my humble opinion, this is the best Spectrum book to date.
The series is getting better, but is the art?.......2001-10-25
I've been following the development of the Spectrum series since the first volume, and I must admit that the series - as a publication of artworks - is getting better. The layout is more thought out, the artworks presented are sufficiently annotated and marked. On other hand, I wonder whether the makers of this book feel like they have to fill up more pages and therefore sometimes go amiss in their choice of good fantasy art. Nevertheless, this is an excellent collection of works of fantasy (and fantastic) art, especially good as a first step in the exploration of the field. Those new to the genre might choose the Spectrum series as a beginner's guide to fantasy art and use it as a jumpboard for further research of this creative branch of art.
Great inspirations............2001-06-08
I love the Spectrum series, and this one fits in with the rest of them perfectly. While much of the art is truly innovative and skilled, there are always a good number of pieces that slip by the judges as 'quality' and make it into the book, making it disappointing at times. Next to the well-chosen genius of Dave McKean, Phile Hale, Tony DiTerlizzi and the like, we are oppositely bombarded with the cliches that make fantasy art laughable - large chested, scantily clad women done without skill or grace. I mean, what's up with the devil-chick on page 74? More and more quick photoshop 'works' are worming their way into the competition, making the painter obsolete and reducing the real intellectual thought, whimsy and quality of this series.
I'll collect 'em anyhow. It's an amazing source of inspiration for the aspiring fantasy illustrator. If not from the great works, the poor works, at which one can say 'I can do better than that, ...!' [and then try their hand at it]

Not the Typical Irish Tale.......2002-08-02
"44 Dublin Made Me", was the first book written Peter Sheridan. Mr. Sheridan is also a noted playwright, and director of such films as, "My Left Foot" and "The Boxer". When I commented on his first work I felt it settled itself between the sadness that often accompanies Irish Memoirs with the traditional healthy dose of humor. This second book, "47 Roses", is not devoid of humor, but the topic that is shared is almost incompatible with humor, and certainly overwhelms the few lighter moments that are described.
The number in the title not only describes the flowers that play a role in the book, but much more significantly the number of years a woman from England remained devoted to a man she could never marry. It was not only that the author's father was married that kept them apart, but also, and to a lesser extent, differences that unfortunately remain so prominent between Ireland and England. Intolerance was much stronger in the first half on the 20th Century, so the idea of an English Protestant and an Irish Catholic as husband and wife was dicey, especially for an Irishman whose family history was prominent in the more extreme groups of Ireland. To balance the difficulties, the English side of the family included a former member of The Black And Tans, who will remain notorious for much of Ireland no matter how many years may pass.
Anna was the wife in Ireland and Doris was the woman in England. Both of these women had a claim on the affections of this man Peter, and he clearly had feelings that ran very deep for both of them. For 30 years Doris was a part of the author's family, through visits and even watching the children when Anna and Peter vacationed. The ultimatum that finally separated Peter and Doris was to last 17 years until his death, and then it would continue with the son trying to piece together the mystery of this extremely unusual relationship that spanned the Irish Sea.
The feelings of both women and their actions are at times hard to fathom. Why would Doris wait for a man for 47 years, going so far as to convert to Catholicism so as to not be separated after they left their life on this world? This same woman who would come to lay flowers at Peter's grave without having seen him for the better part of 2 decades, and upon arriving in Dublin would walk 10 miles at the age of 75 to pay her respects. This same woman who had one child requested that Peter give her away at her wedding and at the same time invited Anna to attend. The questions and suspicions this request raised, the answers offered, presumptions confirmed or denied.
This is an interesting story to read, it is also devoid of the clichés that would reasonably be expected. The author seems to be in the greatest pain, not because of what may or may not have happened, but due to his feelings about his conduct as he tries to piece together 47 years of family mystery.
This is a remarkably personal story, and because it is, often is almost uncomfortable to read. I don't know whether the story could have been related in a different manner, and my perception may be different from others.
