    Book Description

From its beginnings as a pestilent port and colonial backwater, Hong Kong became the "pearl" of a declining British empire, and then ascended to its present status as a gleaming city of commerce. Throughout its history, Hong Kong has been steeped in drama, intrigue, and seismic social shifts. Shih Shu-ching, an acclaimed Taiwanese writer, sets her epic tale of one beautiful and determined woman's family amid this rich and colorful history, capturing in vivid, panoramic detail the unique tensions and atmosphere that characterize the city. Critically praised and long popular in the Chinese-speaking world, City of the Queen is now available for the first time in English.

After being kidnapped from her home in rural China, Huang, the novel's heroine, is brought to Hong Kong and sold into prostitution. Thanks to her shrewd, sometimes devious business dealings and unexpected twists of fate, she emerges from these cruel beginnings to become a wealthy landowner. City of the Queen follows the fortunes of Huang's family, including those of her devoutly Christian daughter-in-law, who tries to redeem the sins she believes Huang has committed; her grandson, who becomes the first Chinese judge on the Hong Kong Supreme Court; and her great-granddaughter, a quintessential Hong Kong young woman, who turns her back on family tradition to revel in the pleasures offered by the 1970s and 1980s metropolis.

The novel introduces a range of other Chinese and British characters, examining the complicated relationships between colonizer and colonized in a searing and perceptive portrayal of colonialism. There is Adam Smith, the British officer who struggles with the competing seductions of Huang's beauty and British respectability; Qu Yabing, Smith's servant, who despises anything Chinese, yet becomes Huang's lover after she is abandoned by Smith; Colonel White, the sadistic colonial police chief; and Auntie Eleven, a concubine who owns a pawnshop and teaches Huang the secrets of the trade.

      Book Description

One wizard is bad. Two are a disaster....And a deadly disaster, too. For Conan, after refusing to help the evil wizard Ethram-Fal, has been cursed with a spell that is slowly, inexorably squeezing the life from his mighty frame. The only person who can banish the spell--besides Ethram-Fal, of course--is the sorceress Zelandra: a raven-haired beauty who practices only white magic....or so she says. Zelandra has offered to lift the spell from the Cimmerian, if only he will do her one small service: steal the deadly Emerald Lotus from the clutches of Ethram-Fal in his impregnable desert fortress. No good can come of this, Conan thinks to himself. Once sorcery gets mixed up in it, the whole job goes to hell!Unfortunately, he's right.

4 out of 5 stars Conan and the Little Shop of Horrors.......2007-09-04

I really liked "Conan and the Little Shop of Horrors," and I think they ought to make it into a musical.

No, just kidding -- I enjoyed this book, it was a good, solid swords & sorcery yarn. Conan seemed a bit subdued, but not stupid. I was in the mood for a quick read, and it was a well spent six dollars.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Character Development, High Action.......2007-05-27

I had not read John C. Hoking's Conan tales before this one. If he has any others, I would read them. Emerald Lotus was pretty good, I would recommend it as better than most of the Conan spinoffs published by Tor or Ace. The carnivorous plant featured as antagonist in this tale is not terribly original, but it's wizardly gardener seeking to harvest the plant's magic is a well crafted and compelling enemy for Conan to encounter. Conan's travel mates in this story are not as annoying as some of the other's he has been saddled with. If you are looking for a Conan read that is a little more involved and rich in character development then I would recommend Emerald Lotus. Hocking keeps the action coming at a good pace and also does a good job of bringing Conan's world to life.

      5 out of 5 stars Sword & Sorcery Perfection!.......2005-06-03

With the notable exception of Karl Edward Wagner's The Road Of Kings, there is no finer Conan pastiche than this. This novel is flawlessly executed fantasy fun from start to finish. You'll never want it to end; it's a compulsive page-turner that puts lesser Conan pastiche writers to shame. Other reviewers have gone into their reviews in far more depth than I have time for at the moment, so I'll just say they are right! Buy this novel now. You won't regret it!

      5 out of 5 stars First Rate.......2004-05-15

Hocking has written a masterful sword and sorcery story. Driving action, evil sorcerors, compelling plot that never lets-up, lovely damsels--and Conan besides, written as no one but REH has written of him. When it comes to pastiche Conan, this may well be the best I have EVER read. Conan is more complex in Hocking's hands, just as he was with REH.

Hocking has also mastered Robert E. Howard's compelling narrative, the brooding tension beneath... in short this is simply the best new sword and sorcery I've read in ages.

Bring us some more Conan by Hocking! Please!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Conan by any standards.......2004-01-05

For fans of Conan and Robert E. Howard who have been deeply disappointed with the recent "Conan" novels, or who don't even want to pick one up (and in most cases, I can't blame you), THIS is the one read. This is excellent Conan, as good as many of Robert Jordan's early work and easily the best Conan from Tor I've read in a long time. To put it simply, "Conan and the Emerald Lotus" is thrilling. After a slightly slow beginning, the narrative rockets into a real Howardian roller-coaster ride. It's clear the author had a fun time writing it, and the reader consequently feels his enthusiasm.

Mr. Hocking has solved one of the principle problems of the recent Conan books: he actually builds to a climax. Instead of hurling countless subplots and villains at the reader and then dropping them all before a boring conclusion, Hocking gives us one hell of an apocalyptic curtain closer. It more than satisfies the reader's expectations. In general, the gradual build of action is perfectly pitched. After page 85 or so, I guarantee you'll be reading compulsively. There are plenty of other treats, such as a true human heartbeat to the story when dealing with sorceress Zelandra's addiction to the lotus. Hocking shows a believable decline and desperation in the character (and, to a lesser extent, in villain Ethram-fal). It's rare to see a modern Conan author find an emotional core to the story, the same way the REH did in his best work, and I applaud Mr. Hocking for this bit of attractive gloss to his adventure story.

In many ways, "Conan and the Emerald Lotus" is less true Howard than it is an homage to all of the Weird Tales authors, especially Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth, H. P. Lovecraft, and most clearly Robert Bloch. Mr. Hocking remembers that Conan originally appeared in a magazine of the weird, unusual, and often horrific, and appropriately ladens his story with creepy dark fantasy and terror. The Emerald Lotus, inspired from the sensational Clark Ashton Smtih story "The Seed from the Sepulcher", is a particularly gruesome nasty. The author has also given us a good vision of the wilderness of Stygia, where ancient temples lie in wait and long dead sorcerers can still stalk benighted halls in ghoul-form before the faceless sphinx of Nyarlathotep.

Conan himself is in fine form. He's in his thirties, a hardened veteran, and he uses his skills in tactics, stealth, and tracking at every point. He's still a softer character than REH's, but at least he's smart and wry and still tough as hell. His relationship with Neesa is a bit routine (you gotta love the way the girl hurls a dagger though!), but his bond with mute Heng Shih is one of the better male-buddy relationship I've read in a non-Howard work.

Altogether, this is fine adventure, and Howard fans should all read it, even if they claim to hate pastiches. I want to read more from Mr. Hocking, so I hope to see more people reading his novel.

This is not a book, just a binder with empty paper. I got it as a gift more than a year ago, and it is sitting since collecting dust, only because I feel guilty to throw it out. It is a shame that publishers put Alton Brown's pic on the cover and sell the binder for this price. what a rip off!

Apparently, there are multiple editions of this book.
The one I purchased is a ring-bound edition...

I bought this book for a friend of mine who is also receiving the benefit of my own cooking lessons. I started him out simple, and we're working our way towards more "complete" dishes. At any rate, I will be filling in the blank pages with his favorite recipes that I've either taught him or made for him.

        Why?

        Why not!
My mother gave me a book akin to this - a "make your own" cookbook - that she had for about 20 years. It's filled with food that she used to make when I was growing up and had since forgotten. To me - gifts like this serve multiple purposes and mean more than some pre-filled store-bought cook book any day.

3 out of 5 stars "My " Working American Bulldog.......2007-05-21

The most comprehensive book to date on the subject of the American Bulldog. Dave Putnam really did his homework as for as the history & orgins of the breed, although when he gets to the modren AB it becomes more obvious that he favors the "standard" over the larger "Johnson" type. With that aside I still consider it "a most have" for any AB owner, except I think he should have change the name of the book from "The Working AB" to "My Working AB" seeing as how most of the text is about personal experiences of his dog, & not the breed in general.

Exellent book on American Bulldogs. Goes into deep detail about how these dogs came about and what they where used for then and now. Lots of pictures from training to hunting. Would recommend to anyone that likes bully dogs and wants to do some research about them.

Goldmine COUNTRY & WESTERN Record Price Guide (2nd Edition)

I was hoping that this long awaited new book would fill up some of the gaps in previous similar works, or at least that it could be a new interesting tool for better investigating the "big sea" of country music recordings. I've always bought Price Guides primarily for their amount of information on old recordings, useful for oldies fans and collectors too. Well, although I knew by experience that compiling a thorough conprehensive records guide avoiding at the same time any mistake is a very difficult(if not impossible) task, I could have never imagined that I would find such an inaccurate work, at least for what concerns the LPs part. As Mr. Neely says in his introduction, 75% of this new edition is dedicated to 45s(and this is good), but why should he neglect so badly the LPs section? It took me less than 30 minutes to find out, for instance, that Dave Dudley's listed LPs are only the Mercury cuts, and that there's no mention at all of the United Artists recordings.,Sun,? , furthermore: Johnny Dollar has only a Date LP listed; what about the others on Chart ?, Johnny Bond's Lamb and Lion LP is not included, Don Bowman's LPs list does not include "Support Your Local Prison", "Wispering Country", "The All New D.B."(?), Owen Bradley is entitled to a long list while Harold Bradley is totally ignored (!?), Jethro Burns, Jenks "Tex" Carman, Thumb Carllile, Fred Carter Jr.,etc. have no LPs on the list while other significant singers (dozens) have an LP dicography clearly uncomplete, ?.The famous "Red and Ernie" duet LP by Red Foley and Ernest Tubb is impossible to find under both Foley or Tubb. And this are only a few example.

I really can't understand why Mr.Neely came up with such a poor work. Yet he was responsible for previous good ones such as the Goldmine STANDARD CATALOG OF AMERICAN RECORDS, etc. One could guess he didn't pay much attention on how F.Heggeness had conceived his previous(and controversial) COUNTRY & WESTERN PRICE GUIDE from which this second one has originated. Mr. Heggeness started in late 80s publishing a CD/Record Price Guide titled RAREST OF THE RARE which listed only recordings of a certain value. In 1990 he published the RAREST OF THE RARE version for Country & Western fans/collectors. There, only the most rare and valuable recordings were listed. Later on, in 1996, he published a new big volume: GOLDMINE COUNTRY WESTERN RECORD & CD PRICE GUIDE which was nothing more than an expanded version of his previous work and included many more recordings(78,45,LP,promos,...). Even though he was still focusing on the most valuable releases, he didn't forget to mention all others by listing (only under the artist's name) at least the labels on which they were issued, with their approximate prices. So has maybe Neely ,in his most recent book, considered only the full LP listing data from the previous Heggenes guide and forgotten the rest ??? It seems absurd anyway. But then, if it works for Dudley 's discography, certainly it doesn't (for example) for Pete Drake's whose LPs full list appeared on the Heggeness guide, while Neely had completly ignored them.

However, though disappointing , yet this new price guide is something any collector should add to his library for the updated information it contains as well as useful extra cross reference tool. For the newcomers it could just be the first step into records collecting research, but only as long as they are fully aware that this work is widely incomplete.

If you read the title and you had been fooling around with glass for some time, you would most likely give this book a miss. Yes, it is a book for beginners but it touches on so many things you can do with glass apart form the obvious stained glass techniques that it is an invaluable source of information. I have learnt new techniques about cutting bottles, painting glass, designing 3-d glass models that aren't explored in your standard glass books that all seem to have the same format: history of glass, glass types, projects.. this one will amaze even some advanced glass users. I originally borrowed this from the library but was so upset having to give it back I came on Amazon to purchse it!

Published by Yale Center for British Art, Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Richter Verlag Dusseldorf. The catalogue to the exhibition (2002-2004) organized by the Kunstmuseum Winterthur. Regularly referred to as the father of Pop Art, Richard Hamilton was an early, lively, and satirical discover of the art of the everyday consumer good. In the mid-50s, like many artists who were to follow in his wake, Hamilton discovered the mythic and epic elements that lurked in the contemporary world of imagery and integrated these found objects into his work. If Hamilton is best known for his collages--most especially his 1956 Just What Is It That Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing?--he has. One of the great masters and innovators in printing since the Second World War, Richard Hamilton's oeuvre stands as "a unique block in the midst of the art of the last few decades." This catalogue raisonne takes as its starting point the two catalogues published by the Waddington Galleires, in 1984 and 1992 respectively, and the catalogue published by the Alan Cristea Gallery in 1998. Full-color illustrations throughout. Bibliography, concordance.

              Book Description

As an author, poet, actress, director, and civic leader, Maya Angelou has had a profound influence on the lives of millions around the world. Closer to home, she has also profoundly influenced her many friends and family members--by counseling, encouraging, praising, and exhorting, and not least, teaching by example. One of those whose lives she touched, photographer Margaret Courtney-Clarke, offers a tribute in these pages--moving and revealing portraits of her friend. Taken over the course of a year, at bookstore signings, on stage, and at home, Courtney-Clarke's photographs both celebrate and illuminate one of the great figures of our time.

Supporting the visual story are thoughts on Angelou's powers of friendship as interpreted by her friends, in chapters that highlight the poet's virtues--Joy, Giving, Learning, Perseverance, Creativity, Courage, Self-Respect, Spirituality, Love, and Taking Risks. Among those represented here, all of whom count Dr. Angelou as one of the most important persons in their lives, are leaders Coretta Scott King, Reverend Barbara King, and Andrew Young; singers Ashford and Simpson; and Dr. Angelou's son, the writer Guy Johnson. And in her touching foreword, Oprah Winfrey describes how Dr. Angelou came to be her "counsel, consultant, advisor, shoulder to cry on, Rock, Shield, Protector, Defender, Mama Bear, and Mother-Sister-Friend."

Maya Angelou's strength in the face of a difficult life, her concern for others, and the singular artistry of her writings give guidance to all who seek their own spiritual way in the world. In Courtney-Clarke's photographs and in the words of Dr. Angelou's closest friends, the true wisdom of her spirit emerges.
