discover dawn powell.......1999-03-09
What a delight to discover Dawn Powell! This collection offers a selection of novels and short stories that bristle with well-observed details and uncanny insights. She writes with ascerbic humor about the "wanna-bes" and the "haves" in flapper society with sometimes chilling clarity. Like so many of her contemporaries, she was brave enough to make heroes of very flawed creatures indeed--and do it very well. I wanted to know more about her and read more. Discovering her makes me wonder why Dorothy Parker and Edna Ferber got all the breaks.

Linden Rathan is the last of a race of weredragons--magical, nearly immortal half-humans who can transform themselves into mighty dragons. Linden is one of three dragonlord judges who will determine the next ruler of a true human kingdom. Political and sorcerous machinations and ancient hatred threaten the dragonlords' decision, and Linden must sort out the good from the evil, all the while fighting loneliness and despair. When he meets a beautiful young sea captain, Linden thinks he might have a chance at love after all. This is Joanne Bertin's first novel, and sometimes her storytelling ambitions make for a bit of confusion when new characters, history, and plot devices are introduced all at once. The Last Dragonlord is an excellent fantasy, nonetheless, with interesting, sympathetic characters and an intriguing setup. Fans of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series and other high fantasy sagas will find themselves caught up in a wonderful, romantic world.
Book Description
Dragonlord Linden Rathan, last-born of a race of immortal weredragons, has spent six hundred years alone, searching for his soultwin while his fellow Dragonlords watch over humanity's Five Kingdoms. When the Queen of Cassori dies mysteriously, Linden and the other Dragonlords are called upon to prevent civil war as two human claimants vie for the regency. As the battle for Cassori rule escalates, Linden becomes the target of the Fellowship, a secret society of true-humans who could actually destroy his immortal life. Then he meets a beautiful young ship captain named Maurynna who may be the only one who can help Linden bring Cassori back from the brink of chaos.

My re-introduction to an amazing world by Mrs. Bertin..........2007-01-12
I am actually reading this fantasy as a prequel to "Dragon and Phoenix," which turned out to be one heck of a read, one with interesting characters and a colorful world. I had to find the original opening to Bertin's Dragonlord series. The "Last Dragonlord" takes the reader into the world of noble Dragonlords, creatures with both human and dragon forms marveled by truehumans. The main protagonist, Linden Rathan is on a mission to the kingdom of Cassori on a diplomatic mission to negotiate with various lords who regard dragonlords unfavorably, blah, blah... On the sidelines is an evil magician who mercilessly sacrificed a child to unleash dark magic upon the nobility for reasons I have yet to discover. I don't know the rest of the story since I've only started, but I can already tell this will page a nonstop ride that I won't put down till the end. Joanne Bertins writing style and story-building feels right at home with the likes of Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" saga.
pretty good.......2006-12-24
Looking at other peoples reviews I can see why many people don't like the story. The plot itself is not that original nor is the concept of soultwins. The characters at times can be a bit sterotypical, but that didn't really stop me from enjoying the book. Yes the book should probably be in the romance section, since this is the main theme.
Sherrine is the one of the more human characters, she shows all the emotions in extremes. Rynna does cry a few times, but I don't really remember her crying every two seconds. She cries when part of her face is sliced open and when her lover tells her he can't see her again with no explanation. While this can be annoying for many people I think they are valid reasons to cry. Tarlna and Kief are not really developed well which is unfortunate because they could be the more interesting characters. I could go on about the other characters, but I think most people get the point.
Yes there are some flaws, but I personally don't think you need to read Pride and Prejudice to get some entertainment. The Last Dragonlord has its weak points. I personally don't think think the simple writing style is a weak point because the story is a simple one. The one real complaint I have though is the story jumps around with no warning just to make the story longer. I know many things I've said make the story seem bad, but it is still a fun read. Sometimes its good to get away from complex plots and sit and enjoy.
*note: I really give this story 3.5 stars but it wouldn't let me so I picked four because three is to low, in my opinion.
Great read, couldn't put it down!!.......2006-09-21
I love this style of fantasy writing. Unlike many authors, Bertin keeps a tight reign on the plot, building up the characters without losing any of the suspense. I reccomend this novel as an important addition to any fantasy collection.
Will the wait ever be over.......2005-12-03
Is there ever going to be another one or did she retire?
A fresh breeze.......2005-08-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, in fact I couldn't put it down, I read it from cover to cover through the night.
Yes, it's romantic... a book that anybody who loves fantasy and still believes in true love, or dreams of it, will enjoy reading. I liked the weredragon twist on the concept of soul mates.
I guess The Last Dragonlord might appeal more to women, but there are also lots of romantic and sensitive males around who, I think, would enjoy this book.
As for the language... well, it isn't high-brow, it isn't a literary masterpiece, it isn't pretentious. But it's easy to read, simple and flowing. Something that people will appreciate who believe in the KISS concept (keep it simple stupid). Personally, I get so tired of books that are just trying to impress me with un-necessary complexity...
The really nice thing about the Last Dragonlord is that it made me feel good. Too many books are so full of horror... Life has its own sorrows, and this story was, for me, a fresh breeze, making me feel that there is still beauty in the human (and dragon) heart!

From back cover:.......2004-03-21
The Eleven Million Mile High Dancer is a rich and comic blend of science and romance. The case of characters includes the president of the U.S., 10,000 American Indians, a Texas sheriff, and a cat who learns to order off a Chinese menu. As they collide in a satiric melee around the beautiful and brave Amanda Jaworski...America's leading and most troublesome astronaut...atoms, molecules, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, and even the U.S. government are put to unexpected tests. Amanda challenges everything, but her ultimate challenge is the Eleven Million Mile High Dancer. In that encounter, a fairy tale fully grounded in the laws of physics, Amanda's journey become a moving odyssey not only through space and time but through the darkness and potential human mind.
Lots of fun, but maybe a little TOO weird?.......2000-08-03
I enjoyed the first half of this book so much, filled as it was with original characters and fresh situations. Who could resist a cat who was comatose 23 hours out of 24, but whose owner loved him madly nevertheless? And a female astronaut who learned faster than anyone else, but who was still prey to love problems? Once I got to the second half, though, somewhere in a star system far far away, the goings-on weren't as much fun for me. I was never the least bit tempted to quit reading, but I wanted to get back to the home planet where the characters were REAL, not giant red and blue robots, a creature named Ooze, something called Rastus, computer consoles that saw and knew all (well, not so unreal after all), and a very smelly overlord, or whatever he was. In other words, the story went from magic realism to total fantasy, even though, I must say, the author makes a good case for the physics of what's happening. The quotes about quantum physics interspersed throughout, by the way, added a lot for me. All in all, a funny, tongue-in-cheek, and sometimes thought-provoking novel.
quite complementary.......1999-07-25
This book influenced my adolescent life more than any other. It is wonderfully written and should be mandatory reading for all young females.

A thrilling and unpredictable ride!.......1999-01-04
I was truly excited to see this book in paperback, because it meant I could share it with even more people than I did when it was first published years ago! Carol Hill has managed to blend fantasy, sci-fi and thoughtful philosophy into a real character-driven story that never lets up. She displays a unique imagination, and I invite all readers to join in the fun and discover a whole new world.

strange and funny fantasy.......2004-07-25
Amanda Jaworski is an astronaut who is destined to be the first person to land on Mars. She is brilliant, beautiful, eccentric and sexy. She owns a strange cat called Schrodinger who is asleep nearly all the time. She is torn between the love of two men, sexy pilot Bronco McCloud, and intense engineer Donald Hoskiss. Very weird things begin to happen in the area, all the Indians disapear from the local reservation, much to the bafflement of Sheriff Eberly, there are bizarre disruptions with the weather, sinsiter robots appear from nowhere, and Schrodinger starts to do some very odd things indeed. Will amanda ever get to Mars? This book is a peculiar but engaging mixture of fantasy, science fiction, mystery, physics, philosophy, and enough touches of humour to stop it getting too pretentious.

Book Description
Imagine a kitchen warm witih the smells of sweet vanilla, fragrant cinnamon, and fresh butter. On the kitchen counter is a cooling rack piled high with fresh-from-the-oven delights filled with chocolate chips and crunchy pecans. Ah, the age-old comfort of cookies.
Next imagine that each of the yummy treats began with a convenient box of cake mix. That's right, a standard 18.25-ounce box of cake mix is the secret to some of the tastiest, simplest, and most irresistable cookies imaginable. With a few extra ingredients, turns of a spoon, and whirrs of a mixer, cake mix can make anyone a prize cookie baker.
Like Cookie Dough Delights and Brownie Mix Bliss, Cake-Mix Cookies is the first cookbook of its kind. Although several cake-mix cookbooks exist, including the bestselling Cake Mix Doctor books and 101 Things to Do with a Cake Mix, they offer only a small number of cookie and bar recipes and overlap one another.
By contrast, Cake-Mix Cookies is filled with an array of more than 175 drop, shaped, filled, and bar cookie options for every occasion. Numerous all-American favorites are used as starting points: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, jam thumbprints, and dark chocolate brownies. There are also new takes on classic European cookies; for example, crunchy Italian biscotti, tender French madeleines, and rich Viennese teacakes. Finally, a healthy dose of new cookies has been created for the book: blackberry-lemon buttermilk bars, triple chocolate chess squares, and chocolate blackout.
Cake-Mix Cookies contains the broadest range of new recipes for cookies and bars that is unavailable elsewhere. And while it capitalizes on the popularity of baking with cake mixes, it has its own unique niche on the home cook's shelf.

A great book for your money.......2007-10-10
This book is loaded with simple recipes that all sound great! I have tried more than one of them and they have all come out fantastic. The cook times and everything in the book have been exactly correct. My only wish is that it had photos of the cookies inside the book instead of just the recipes. I think it's a great investment for anyone who enjoys baking... especially for the holidays!
Great Cookie Cookbook.......2007-02-06
I purchased this cookbook for my mother. She said it is great! She LOVES it! The cookie recipes are easy and delicious. The writer includes variations to the recipes, so the possibilities are endless.
My Favorite Cookie Resource.......2006-08-06
As much as I am enjoying the recipes in this book, I have learned so much from the cookie how-to section at the front of the book. Of my dozen or so cookie cookbooks, this is the most thorough and very user-friendly cookie book guidelines, with tips on everything from preparing ingredients (e.g. multiple ways to soften butter, such as the great tip of grating it with a cheese grater to quickly soften it, a wonderful tip that I use all of the time now) to perfect timing to essential baking tool lists and more. An excellent resource for baking newbies and seasoned bakers alike.
As for recipes, don't miss the peanut butter blondies, chocolate blackout cookies and lemon poopseed cookies--all huge hits that are true gems--no one has ever guessed they started with a mix.
Cake Mix Cookies: More Than 175 Delectable Cookie Recipes That Begin With a Box of Cake Mix.......2006-08-06
I tried a couple of recipes for the cookies. The chocolate chip cookies were horrible, the plain yellow cake mix cookies were okay. The chocolate cake mix with peanut butter on top was good. In the end, it's probably better to make your own from scratch.
~A MUST HAVE IN EVERY COLLECTION" YUMMY~.......2006-07-06
I have around 450 cookbooks in my home, instead of shoes I have cookbooks and I'm addicted to them. I have mainly cookie, cakes, etc cookbooks with a few dinner style cookbooks. This cookbook is wonderful. The recipes are very good and you can make a batch of cookies in a snap. I was totally impressed with this baking book and now I'm off to buy her others out there for sale. I work full-time and do not always get the chance like I would like to bake from scratch but this is heaven sent. Awesome cookies in much less time. Don't say they are from a box until they try them then see what they say, I betcha they would of never guessed!! Hats off to Camilla,Keep up the great cookbooks.

Customer Reviews:
wonderful stories.......2007-06-23
My 10 year-old son tried reading it,and thought the stories were too sad, but I adore this book. Very sweet, humbling stories about good people and good animals.
The Healing Kind of Savior, Cat-like........2006-06-11
In this volume, Mr. Canfield and crew have compiled a smorgasboard selection of short stories about pets who fortify us and make life bearable. Especially poignant to me was "the medicine cat" as I, too, had one named Tosca. She gave up the ghost a few months ago at the age of eighteen years, as I had no way to get to her when she needed support of the kind she gave to me several years ago. They recognize the special love and devotion of animals to bless our hearts and homes.
"Cat lovers will tell you that felines are 'poetry in motion,' living sculptures at rest, and that the warm weight of a purring cat...is a surefire cure for all that ails you."
It is the physical acts of love to bring the gift of life as expressed in "The Healing Touch." I cried as I read "The Language of the Heart" about an unusual rabbit and his healing the hurt of a little girl who'd turned inward and no longer could talk. Something had died in that child which this loving rabbit cured. His innocence and trust had rekindled the same qualities in the child. The loving presence of an animal can heal where words have no effect. Alas, Roger Rabbit bit the tip off my little finger one day, which led me to the ER for a Saran-wrap bandage (to stop the bleeding -- a bandaid wouldn't work) and a tetanus shot. Needless to say, I found him another home.
"A small gesture -- the insistent tap of a cat's paw" about Jack, an adopted stray kitten (like Dante in Troy, Alabama), who grew into Ellen's savior. He woke her from a daydream of tragedy; Star woke me up with that same gesture over and over so that I would not strangle from Acid Reflux. Pets do love and care for their owners. This volume is one I will treasure for years to come. It is full of memories about pet owners' animals, not just cats and dogs.
Awesome.......2006-03-10
I really enjoyed this book. The main reason I liked it is because it is all about cats and dogs, and I am a hardcore animal lover. Another reason I liked it is because the stories are not made up in someone's mind. These stories are real stories that real people lived through. The last reason I liked this book so much is because you don't have to read it like an ordinary book. You can read it like I did and just jump around to stories that sound good to you, instead of reading the book cover to cover.

Even if you aren't a big reader of the "Chicken Soup" series, you will still like this book. The stories are great and you can just pick the book up anytime and pretty much read a section at random. Fun to keep on the coffee table, or as a gift book for animal lovers.

Book Description
This volume offers a reconstruction of the Proto-Ainu language based on the comparative method and internal reconstruction. The book is divided into three parts, the first is dedicated to the reconstruction of Proto-Ainu phonology (vocalism, consonantism, and prosody), the second represents a vocabulary of reconstructed Proto-Ainu lexical items, and the third deals with the problem of the genetic affiliation of the Ainu language. This problem has been approached in the present study from the point of view of the systematic comparisons of reconstructions, not the straight comparisons of the forms attested exclusively in modern languages, which was the major set-back of the previous scholarship on the genetic affiliation of the Ainu language. This volume also includes the nineteenth-century vocabulary of the Kuril Ainu by I. Voznesenskii, previously unknown to the scholars.

Book Description
At first sight, it appears brand new, pure Tokyo pop. But The Japanese Experience: Inevitable reveals far more than the successful cloning of morphed manga motifs onto stretched canvas and museum walls. It represents eight positions in contemporary Japanese art and scrutinizes their complex visual vocabulary, noting references to Japanese and Western art traditions as frequently as the borrowing of mass culture motifs from the realms of manga and anime. Takashi Murakami's MR. DOB questions the place of contemporary art in our global society; Aya Takano's glowing watercolors combine Japanese sensitivity, issues of female identity, and sci-fi; Masahiko Kuwahara's mutant animals provide shades of softness and mysterious openness, and Yoshitomo Nara's reworking of historical Japanese woodcuts disturbs the floating world. Not only are the artists' visual repertoires new and surprising, but their creative methods and strategies help conquer a public that is mostly untouched by contemporary art. Published in association with the Ursula Blickle Foundation.
Customer Reviews:
A Japanese Arts Favourite.......2006-06-14
Not only the selection of artists and artist's work is good but the stories they tell about each of them is between the finest you can find. The writer makes it easy to understand the artist's mind in very few words. I'm sorry I didn't go to the exibition that generated this catalog.
Surely one must pay attention..........2005-04-30
This is a fantastic catalogue of an important exhibition held in Kraichtal, Germany in 2002. The curator was Margrit Brehm. So, do not be mislead: this is not a Murakami-curated exhibition, unlike the current Japan Society show entitled "Little Boy." (This book does contain works by Murakami and others of the Kaikai Kiki alongside other important contemporary figures).
Also important to note is that as this is a catalogue of an important art event, it contains several essays on topics relevant to the Japanese Neo Pop movement. It is not necessary that one fully comprehend these essays in order to enjoy the artwork reproduced here. However, these essays are very valuable for anyone interested in placing these works in a historical context.
Peter Max carves out a space?.......2005-04-08
HMMMMMMM? where is Tenmyouya Hisashi's masterful work that actually engages what is going on in Japanese culture. Why Murakami's pandering to the west when the JApanese clearly do not buy into his cheapened schemes? This is a great book to peruse if you are hell-bent on finding insipid mis-information about Japanese culture. with flights being ~$500 from NYC (round-trip) go see for yourself that his strategy preys on western ignorance and is really a self-exoticized version of what is not really happening in Japan. If you like this book you must surely beleive everything Geroge Jr. says about the links of WMD and Al Queda in Irak :P hahahahaahha
well worth it........2005-02-16
i bought this book pretty much sight unseen (it was wrapped in plastic), and for a not so thrifty price. that said, i do not regret that decision at all. this is a great informative book, and i think it handles the distinction between "high art" and "pop culture" quite well. i wish more american artists would follow this lead, basing great works of beauty on comics and tv. highly recommended.
A book that is great to look at but to read...........2003-09-09
The artists featured in "The Japanese Experience: Inevitable" are artists that I have come to enjoy from seeing their art in magazines such as "Giant Robot" and other publications. As a purveyor of art in Europe and especially in Asia, the art presented in this book is quite amazing. The book features fine artists in Japan and the copy is featured in English and Jerman.
As much as I enjoyed looking at the book, reading the book is a different story. As much as I enjoy cultural literacy and learning new words, upon reading this book, I felt that Gregor Janse may be a bit too cerebral in the words and the way he writes.
The book, while informative, reads like one of those cerebral college books that you just don't want to read. I own so many art books and this book has to be one of the most cerebral and for me that's fine but for others...
By the cover alone, this book is going to attract anime fans and fans of Japanese pop culture but is this book targeting them or the art afficionado?
A book with so much potential and what could have been a fun book to read is more like a scholarly thesis.
Book Description
bell hooks, one of America's leading black intellectuals, is one of our most clear-eyed and penetrating analysts of culture. Outlaw Culture -- the culture of the margin, of women, of the disenfranchised, of racial and other minorities -- lies at the heart of bell hooks' America. Raising her powerful voice against racism and other forms of oppression in the United States, hooks unlocks the politics of representation and the meaning of that politics for and in our lives.
Using the mix of essays and highly personal dialogues for which she is well known, Outlaw Culture gives us hooks on Spike Lee and Naomi Wolf, Malcolm X and Madonna, Camille Paglia, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ice Cube, and such films as The Bodyguard and The Crying Game.

Academic Aneurysm.......2007-08-19
Hooks wants to start a revolution and bring academics more in touch with the "common woman or man." Although her first chapter/essay on Madonna's lack of a feminist touch is edifying and I enjoyed it, she did not write it in plain speak. A sharp contrast exists between her gutter-mouth essay title and the scholarly writing within the pages. The only explanation I can offer is that hooks really wants to avoid classification of any kind.
Things that lurk below the surface..........2004-07-06
This is certainly one amazing book. bell hooks superbly crafts her argument to truly make her readers think, to make them look at seemingly clear-cut issues in a different light. hooks shows very convincingly that there are many issues below the surface that we must explore if we are ever to have true equity and equality in our society. She cleverly exposes some of the subtle ways in which the powers that be maintain their power, sometimes deliberately, sometimes unwittingly, and she shows how the latter way is the most insidious one and does the most damage.
At the same time, hooks is not always true to her word. She demands for herself complete freedom from censorship but in her own way attempts to censor or at least discredit those women who might disagree with her. Second, I appreciate her condemnation of black violence, but following that with a "I condemn, but..."
makes one wonder about her true feelings. And in her essay on Columbus, hooks does exhibit her limited knowledge of American Indian issues. An excellent book to force readers to examine their own thoughts and actions but even better if people read between the lines and expose hooks' own prejudices.
Excellent! I can't wait to read more!.......2003-05-20
bell hooks does an excellent job in exploring pop culture and its relationship to African Americans. I found all of the essays interesting but was particularly moved by Seduced by Violence No More in which I felt like I was slapped across the face. There are sections in that particular essay that read as if hooks had had a personal window into my life! Other essays that stood out to me included Crying Game meets The Body Guard, Misrepresenting the Black Underclass, and Censorship from Right to Left. I recommend this book to anyone interested in hearing a powerful direct view on pop culture and its effects.

A very indepth medium to connect reality with proposition.......2003-02-23
I came across bell hooks very recently. I have found her work to be very direct and very, very challenging. Resisting Reresentations has done a lot of things to my mind. Although I consider myself "in-the-now" with ideas on social issues, after reading this book I am left with a feeling of re-birth. hooks speaks of many issues I agree with (and some I am not so sure I swallow completely). These issues and hooks' analysis of them has made me learn to laterally think and critically observe our world. I am a woman who believes in the eradication of sexism on all levels but now I must make my belief the engine to keep the eradication machine existent. Any woman, or man, who needs inspiration to challenge the many institutions that support racism, sexism and captalism start with bell hooks. She forces you to use your brain and think. This is a quality that many intellectualists fail to possess.
