In this prequel to McMurtry's 1986 Pulitzer Prize-winning Lonesome Dove, Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call are invincible young bucks, Texas Rangers, full of youthful energy and, quite frankly, full of themselves. That is until they're utterly consumed by the vicious battlefield of the early-19th-century Wild West. Their journey takes them across barren deserts and raging rivers and through steep and snowy mountains, often on foot and with barely enough provisions and clothing to keep them from certain death. The constant threat of attack by Comanches keeps them awake nights, fearing for their lives--and for good reason. "Buffalo Hump reached down and grabbed the terrified boy by his long black hair. He yanked his horse to a stop, lifted Zeke Moody off his feet, and slashed at his head with a knife, just above the boy's ears. Then he whirled and raced across the front of the huddled Rangers, dragging Zeke by the hair. As the horse increased its speed, the scalp tore loose and Zeke fell free. Buffalo Hump had whirled again, and held aloft the bloody scalp."
This bedraggled group of adventurers--on their foolhardy expedition to seize Santa Fe from the Mexicans (who also prove to be formidable enemies)--includes a salty assortment of cowboys, scouts, fortune seekers, and a fat and sassy whore nicknamed "The Great Western." McMurtry's adept storytelling paints a portrait of the Wild West that at times is palpable. One can almost smell the campfires, the body odors, and the long-awaited piece of meat after weeks without a proper meal. Dead Man's Walk will satisfy your craving for adventure, without having to put your life on the line.
Book Description
Dead Man's Walk is the first, extraordinary book in the epic Lonesome Dove tetralogy, in which Larry McMurtry breathed new life into the vanished American West and created two of the most memorable heroes in contemporary fiction: Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call.
As young Texas Rangers, Gus and Call have much to learn about survival in a land fraught with perils: not only the blazing heat and raging tornadoes, roiling rivers and merciless Indians but also the deadly whims of soldiers. On their first expeditions--led by incompetent officers and accompanied by the robust, dauntless whore known as the Great Western--they will face death at the hands of the cunning Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump and the silent Apache Gomez. They will be astonished by the Mexican army. And Gus will meet the love of his life.

Boring, depressing, and disappointing.......2007-08-01
Lonesome Dove was a fantastic novel, but this prequel is not even close to the same league. McMurtry must have been depressed when he wrote it, because the entire book is very gloomy, and nothing good ever seems to happen to the main characters. This book and Comanche Moon should really be one book, since there is really no conclusion to this book. Neither one of them is a worthy prequel to Lonesome Dove.
Not a Lonesome Dove.......2007-07-06
I had great exspectations for this book but ended up skipping pages to try and find Some real action. It was a great disappointment. Too much time spent on the whores and long periods of inaction and stupidity of most of the main players left me in limbo. I thought it would be about the adventures of Gus and Call in the ranger days before Lonesome Dove, but was only one long drawn out event. Don't exspect a lot and you will not be disappointed as I was. Long walks across the desert with people dying all the time is not my idea of a action book.
Worthy Prequel to Lonesome Dove .......2007-06-08
Larry McMurtry's DEAD MAN'S WALK is a worthy prequel to 1. Lonesome Dove (the Pulitizer Prize winning masterpiece). However, it lacks the originality of Lonesome Dove. The characters are very real and McMurtry writes in a convincing and readable manner.
The book is excellent until page 459 which is the introduction of Lady Carey and her entourage. The next twenty nine pages are worthless. They add little to the story and worst of all they made the novel unconvincing. The troop saunters through the llano like a circus: there is a black lady with warrior nature, a leper woman who is a contrived Godiva, and a young boy who is one-dimensional.
The beginning story was a tale of grueling hardship to survive. It is high quality writing combined with a page turning story. But McMurtry fails the reader with his hideous conclusion. The ending seemed more circus fantasy than gritty western.
Despite the poor conclusion Dead Man's Walk is worth the read. The tale of Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call is as good as Lonesome Dove. It is delightful to read of their trials and coming into manhood. The descriptions of the landscapes are stunning. Also, the villain, Buffalo Hump, is a force throughout the novel and a hallmark of this book.
Overall ****/***** for a good tale but poor ending; and well conceived characters. Make sure to watch the DVD version of this book. David Arquette and Jennifer Garner are a perfect Gus and Clara.

The weakest book in the series........2007-04-27
I found much of this book to be contrived and forced. Its more of a formula book than the others. The characters didn't ring true with what they became.
Dead Man's Walk - a review.......2007-02-08
Woodrow Call and Agustus McCrae are very young men, just embarking on their adventures as Texas Rangers when this book takes place. I have to admit it was rather a disappointment. "Lonesome Dove" is a masterpiece and, in a way, I think McMurty should have left it at that. He uses the central characters from "Lonesome Dove" in "Dead Man's Walk", and, especially in regard to Woodrow Call, it just doen't ring true. I just can't see Captain Call of LD as the same Woodrow Call in DMW, particularly when it comes to his relationship with Maggie. Captain Call was a solitary individual, emotionally remote. I don't see this struggle in DMW, or any reason for him to turn inward later in life and to deny his son. The ending of the book seems rather abrubt and far-fetched. If you can separate the idea that these are the same characters from LD, you may enjoy the book on that level. As westerns go, it is an okay read.

Better than the first.......2006-11-12
I enjoyed this one better than the first one published, it had more "life" to it. There were some aspects of it though that seemed as if I was still missing something, or that there could've been more said. All in all though, I enjoyed it and am awaiting the third book.
Typical second volume... Disappointing and unengaging........2006-10-11
"Lies of Light" is the second book in "The Watercourse Trilogy" by Philip Athans. True to recent trilogy publications by Wizards of the Coast, "Lies of Light" is dissappointing and dull. The one thing that I applaud about Athans in this 3-book adventure is the fact that he has stayed away from the traditional realms adventure of searching, exploring, and fighting. This book focuses more on the political intrigue of the characters and the cities. There are a few fights but nothing super special.
As for the characters, they are pretty one-dimensional. They are not engaging and they follow the same pattern and experienced no growth in this book. A few of the characters have a lot of potential to be strong engaging characters, but because the plot is forcing them along Athans has little time to explore their individuality. There are many times when characters act a certain way with no explanation. I was often left confused as to why so-and-so was acting the way they were.
After reading "Whisper of Waves" I was really excited for this trilogy. I thought that it was refreshing to have a series that is more focused on the characters and the politics then forcing an adventure story with harrowing chases and narrow escapes. I think that the basic storyline about the canal building still has a lot of potential; but, I think that the one-dimensional characters are bogging down the story because Athans is too busy building them up for what appears, at this point, to be a forced climactic finale of personal and political conquests and defeats.
I do plan to read the final book when it comes out next summer, and I think that there is the potential for the final book to turn this series from its current state of mediocrity to an above average Realms adventure.
Average Realms fare.......2006-10-10
Lies of Light is the second book in the Watercourse Trilogy set in the Forgotten Realms world. The first book in this trilogy is called Whisper of Waves and was released November, 2005. The third, and final, book of this trilogy is titled Scream of Stone and is scheduled to be released in June of 2007.
First off, if you are thinking of reading this book, you really need to read the first or you will be completely lost. As I said in the review of whisper of Waves, this book is set up differently than any other Forgotten Realms book. There are 67 chapters in this book with each chapter being about 3-5 pages in length. At times this leads to the book feeling jumpy and disjointed, although, I will say this feeling is not nearly as prevalent as it was in the first book.
The overall plot of this books `feels' better than the first book. There seems to be more purpose in it. This could be because the author has introduced most of the major players in the first book and is now able to focus on the story and plot arc. It didn't feel like the author was trying to jam as many details of the characters as he could into the first book. This plot seems to have a solid flow to it that doesn't overly confuse the reader. Although, with all the different, short chapters, I found it difficult to focus on one thing. It seemed just when I got into the flow of a chapter there was suddenly a shift to a new perspective abandoning the flow the author had just gained. With that said, the plot really develops in this book and takes great strides. Yet, I would be remiss to say that I have developed a lot of caring about the plot. I honestly don't really see the reason why this plot deserves a trilogy (of course this may change with book three). It just seems, to me, that these two books could have easily been combined into one and saved some trees.
The characters in this book are so-so. Some are interesting and some are just very bland that they can easily be ignored. The vast majority of the characters I simply could care less about. They didn't seem to advance the plot very much, their dialog seemed force and not true to the character at many points. They were simply there and the plot seemed to drag them along through it. Normally, the character section of my reviews are longer than the plot section, but I simply didn't care enough about the characters to write much about them.
Overall, this book was average at best. If you are looking for multiple points of view fantasy books try G. R. R. Martin and the Song of Ice and Fire books, he pulls it off wonderfully. This book, and the preceding one, doesn't do it very well. I think the book, and series, would have been better served writing it as a `normal' book and not letting it pretend to be something that it's not. If you are a fan of the Realms you may like this, but don't expect this book to be the best Realms book you will read this year. If you do you will be very disappointed.

If you like the evironment, science,or robots read this book........1999-07-22
This is a good book for people who like science fiction stories. It is also pretty short so if you don't have the patience to sit down and read for a couple hours this is a good book. When I say it's short don't get the idea that the plot long enough to be good, the plot is wonderful. In conclusion I recommend that everyone read this book.
Book Description
Maggie Glezer, the uniquely qualified, totally obsessed certified bread baker who teaches and writes about bread for both laypeople and professionals, set off across the country in pursuit of the best breads and best bakers in America. And she returned with the goods—impeccable recipes that reproduce the excellence and craft of the best breads being made today, scaled down and written for a home kitchen.
But in addition to the recipes, she offers sumptuous color photography and portraits of the bakers, in words and pictures, that tell the story of America's artisan bread movement, from the wheat breeders in Kansas to a gristmill in Rhode Island, and specialty bakers from Berkeley, California, to Long Island City, New York.
This is a book to bake from, to learn from, to read for the sheer pleasure of realizing the devotion and mastery that go into the making of our best daily bread, whether it be a dark rye, a Neapolitan pizza, a baguette, or a bialy.
Whether your interest is epicurean, avocational, or vocational, you will be guided by step-by-step instructions detailing the best professional methods. Each recipe is categorized by skill level from beginner to advanced, and there are also helpful mail-order sources for ingredients and equipment.
To savor the crust, crumb, and aroma of these breads fresh out of your home oven is to be touched by the soul of the specialty baker and his or her passion for excellence.
If these truly great breads don't lay waste to the old adage that man can't live by bread alone, then nothing will.
Amazon.com
"Cookbook" would be a grave understatement for Maggie Glezer's Artisan Baking Across America. With its sumptuous photographs and intimate profiles of the practitioners of this noble craft, it is a loving tribute to the art of baking bread. Beautiful enough to serve as a piece of art on the coffee table, it is nonetheless a practical guide for anyone who wants to bake bread like a pro.
According to Glezer, a professional baker and writer, "artisan baking" refers to the process--part of which must be done by hand--that produces the crusty, European-style breads conjured by careful craftsmanship. Glezer traveled around the country in search of the best breads and bakers in America, convincing them to share their stories, their recipes, and their knowledge of America's artisan bread movement.
At first glance, this book seems only for serious bakers, as many of the recipes are quite complicated, but fortunately each is categorized by skill level--from beginner to advanced--to steer inexperienced bakers away from the trickier recipes. Best of all, the meticulous recipes are scaled-down versions of original bakeshop formulas--levain, ciabatta, dark rye, bialy, and much more--and reproduce the professional excellence of some of the best breads being made today.
Beginning with flour--bread's most important ingredient--Glezer explains the various techniques of artisan baking, details the necessary equipment, defines the language of bread baking, and much more. She goes on to introduce the men and women who have devoted their lives to mastering this intricate craft and shares their most treasured recipes: Rustic Baguettes from the Acme Bread Company in Berkeley, California; Sweet Perrin (pear bread) from Seattle's Essential Baking Company; Kalamata Olive Bread from WheatFields Bakery/Cafe in Lawrence, Kansas; Semolina Filone from Tom Cat Bakery in Long Island City, New York, and many more.
Whether you're serious or just curious about the art of baking bread, this book provides possibly the best education you could find outside of cooking school. Suffice it to say, if one could live on bread alone, this book might very well be the Bible. --Robin Donovan

Beyond the highest hopes.......2006-01-04
I cannot understand the reviewers who said that this book is not good for beginners, that the instructions are not clear enough. It went into great detail, describing how the bread should look and feel throughout the process, of great import for me as I have almost no experience with bread baking. I am however, experienced with reading recipes. That's all the skill and experience you need to make the highest quality bread using this book. The big pages minimize the need to turn pages during baking. The steps are sectioned out so that the baker can clearly see what needs to be done when. It also offers instructions for mixing by hand, by mixer, and by food processor, which many bakers will find extremely helpful. The large pictures show you what the results should look like, and if you follow the instructions carefully, your bread will mirror the pictures closely. I disagree strongly with the reviewers who criticised the teaching merit of the book. Take a look at the pictures I've posted and you can see the results for yourself. If you follow carefully the instructions and your instincts, this is will be the bread making book of your dreams.
The Premier Artisan Bread Baking Book!.......2005-05-27
I've tried them all and have given most positive reviews. Those reviews were primarily a function of the fact that each book had some wisdom to impart. Most had recipes for at least one decent bread, but I had found none that were consistently excellent. That is, until Maggie Glezer's "Artisan Baking...". This is a must have! The ciabatta bread and foccacia bread recipes are first rate and as good as anything you'll purchase at your local bakery. Instructions are clear and measurements are given in both weight and volume. Furrther, Ms. Glezer describes the consistency of various doughs in layman's terminology, allowing even the novice to produce excellent results. If you are serious about your baking, then this is a must have. The size is, admittedly a bit large, but that does allow you to have all your instructions in plain sight and eliminates having to turn the page with messy hands. Throw away your Peter Reinhart texts, this is the ultimate for home-based artisan bakers.
excellent cookbook.......2003-11-04
This is the best cookbook I have ever read. Be warned, once you make a few loaves from this book you will never be able to go back to eating Wonder bread again and will scoff and imposter artisan breads.
Special Breads.......2003-08-12
The first task of this book is defining the "artisan" bread. The author has a little trouble pining it down, but it means high quality bread made by hand in small batches at modest, neighborhood bakeries, some of whom have gained international reputations.
I live in the San Francisco bay area, one of the homes of this new trend, so I was looking forward to this book. Sadly, this book tries to be four different things at the same time, and is not particularly good at any of them. The most charitable thing I can think of to say about this book is that it is an interesting introduction to the subject of artisan breads.
The first intended audience is the beginning bread baker. These beginning recipes are identified as such, but there is not enough information for the uninitiated to actually make these recipes.
The second audience is the experienced baker, and this is the most successful one. Everyone who has baked bread will find an interesting recipe that is within his ability. I found several that I was intrigued by and tried. Unfortunately, the recipes in this book are not that complete. On an interesting page, the author describes 5 different pre-ferments, but does not give exact recipes for them, or the most appropriate recipes to use them in. When I tried some of the recipes in summer, many of the doughs fermented faster than the times given in the recipes and over-proofed (I halted fermentation before it happened, and this may have affected the flavor, but what I got was very good). This may not necessarily be a fatal flaw, but only an experienced baker can make them work under typical and variable home conditions. On the positive side, the author is an experienced baker and educator, and has done a good job of translating professional recipes into ones suitable for the home.
The third is as a coffee table book. The format is a large 9x12, but there are not enough pictures for this book to qualify as such, and many of the pictures included are neither interesting nor informative.
The last is an account of the best recipes and bakers the author found while traveling across America. The ones included are interesting enough, but the number of people/places/types covered is surprising small.
The book has the following chapters: Baking Basics, Starting With Flour (simpler, plain breads suitable for beginners; some recipes are based on fermented poolish), Crafting Bread (fermented, sourdough-type breads), Specialty Breads (rye, pizza, pandoro, bialy, etc.), The Baking Life (holiday breads, along with some interesting accounts of baking as a vocation), and miscellaneous references.
A Novice Baker Find this Book to be Wonderful.......2003-03-13
I wanted a book about artisanal baking so that I could learn from the masters, so to speak. Up until now I'd only baked a dozen or so loaves from recipes gleaned from the internet so at first I thought the baking instructions would be too advanced for me. I plunged in, however, starting with the baguettes, and really loved the results. My most recent endeavor was the Focaccia, which was a big hit with my family.
The author is very exacting in her measurements and clear with her instructions, which I need. (I'm sure, however, that as I become comfortable with baking and read books by other artisanal bakers, I'll relax a bit and trust my own creative process). This book is a great teacher as it goes through explanations of flours, interviews with bakers about their methods and tools, and descriptions of how doughs should look and feel. The book is a fine guide to bread baking and certainly isn't relegated to mere coffee table status in my house!

An excellent resource.......2005-08-29
When I first started thinking about starting my business in the early-mid 90's I picked up this book and devoured it. Then, it sat on my shelf as I pursued my 'corporate ladder' and took care of pets part-time.
When I decided to open my business full-time I again referred to the book. It really kept me inspired and ready to move forward. However, I did find that many of the suggestions were somewhat outdated -- using paper to track clients and schedules was never part of my plan -- but the basics of what they recommend you track/keep were great -- and I adapted the info to my on-line database. Since then, I've switched to a third-party service for an on-line database for client info, but the info I learned from the Mangolds' book was great.
I did read this book before Patti Moran's and tend to refer to it as the original 'bible' in my mind. But both books cover the same territory and give you a good overview of wht to expect. Petsitters are generally GREAT with pets and like the idea of spending time with them, but often have a hard time with the business side...this book is a great guide and reminder that you are in it to make money.;
As my business grew (http://www.peggiespets.com), I started helping other pet-sitters start or enhance their own businesses, ([...]) and this is a book that I include on my reading list for clients.
It's a good book that should be part of your learning library to continue to provide outstanding service to pets and their people!

MY SUCCESS STORY.......2005-08-12
When I took early retirement after 25 years in the Banking industry and began a career in pet sitting, I found a treasure in "The Professional Pet Sitter." It is a gem not only in the useful information it contains, but also in the caring philosophy conveyed by its authors, Lori and Scott Mangold. Whether you are considering pet sitting as a full-time or part-time venture, this book is valuable. With time being a precious commodity in today's fast-paced world, I found that "The Professional Pet Sitter" provided clear-cut, easy-to-locate details on how to establish a successful service. As a further boon to launching a pet sitting career quickly and effectively, all appropriate business forms are included in the book. Thanks to the Mangolds' encouragement and expertise embodied in "The Professional Pet Sitter," my business is now in its sixth year and flourishing.
The Professional Pet Sitter.......2005-07-06
This is a wonderful book for anyone starting out in the business or for those who are already actively involved. It is full of useful information and can be used as a reference manual in multiple areas when business questions arise. I would highly recommend it!

love of vintage.......2007-01-09
This book is somewhat interesting if you like looking at pictures, but don't expect too much inspiration if you are a seasoned sewer. And, if you take any decorating magazines you will have seen much better pictures than what is in this book. Definitely not a book you will want to keep for reference, because it is not detailed enough. A lot of outdoor ideas if you like to use fabrics in that way. Also ideas like: covers for hot water bottles, coffee pots, books, and clothes hangers. Make bags to hold laundry and toys. The rest of the book shows kitchens and bedrooms using towels and spreads with vintage, or vintage "look" fabrics.
Rethink Your Use of Fabrics.......2005-12-19
I needed the ideas in this book to use the vintage lace that I'd collected and the stacks of old quilts hidden away in the closet. These were things that attracted me at flea markets and yard sales, but then I had trouble working them into my decor.
The idea of hanging antique clothing on the wall like a piece of art really appeals.
This is a great book for any fabric-aholic out there.
There are ideas for every room of the house.......2005-12-08
Lucinda Ganderton and Rose Hammick's Vintage Fabric Style uses gorgeous color photos by Catherine Gratwicke to embellish the authors' discussions of incorporating vintage fabrics into a modern home. There are ideas for every room of the house, plenty of step-by-step projects, and plenty of insights on fabric qualities and project suitability. Bright photos everywhere make for fabulous examples.
beautiful photos.......2005-08-06
I really liked this book for the photography and ideas--IO would have liked it more with more projects and how to directions! It is beautiful, though
Not enough original projects, but very good.......2003-07-11
I liked this book very much - the pictures are well-done and the layout is beautiful. Very high design standards. I only wish there were more creative or new projects - things I have not already seen elsewhere. I have TONS of vintage fabrics, and there are just so many pillows and sack bags I can make (or need for that matter). There's room for another book with more projects, but this is a wonderful, attractive start

America Needs a Woman President
ASIN: 1883991978 |
Book Description
Bold poetic vision of America under the leadership of a Buddhist president. Brett Bevell's prophetic voice and Ebsen Dodd's simple but elegant line drawings proclaim a radical alternative American dream in the tradition of Buddhism-inspired writers Allen Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Wonderful!.......2007-06-13
I loved this illustrated poem! The poem is written so beautifully and really captures the heart of what we all want in a leader. The illustrations are both comical and elegant which adds to the words themselves. I think it would make a fantastic gift as well as a nice little conversation piece on anyone's coffee table. Definitely worth purchasing!!!
Simply Profound-America Needs More Books Like This.......2007-04-29
Brett Bevell's book provides a profound message woven into the simplicity of his words and the the artistry of the Eben Dodd's drawings. Bevell's verses cause the reader to question, through the subtlety of his humor and the authenticity of the statements, just what qualities make for a successful Commander-in-Chief. The message is clear, timeless, and thought provoking. I look forward to Bevell's next book, America Needs a Woman President.
Book Description
This book explores the formation of the African-American identity through the theory of cultural trauma. The trauma in question is slavery, not as an institution or as personal experience, but as collective memory--a pervasive remembrance that grounded a people's sense of itself. Ron Eyerman offers insights into the intellectual and generational conflicts of identity-formation which have a truly universal significance, and provides a new and compelling account of the birth of African-American identity.
