Book Description
Colin "Birdy" Franklin believes he has removed himself from society. Unable to come to terms with his father's horrifying secret, Birdy has decided to live "visibly invisible" on the streets of Boston. But his existence changes dramatically when he meets Vince, an illicit entrepreneur who employs the homeless to supply restaurants with substandard food. Cajoled into working for Vince, Birdy begins to understand the complexities of a society he never really left. But when these complexities turn deadly, Birdy must confront the events that shaped his past in order to reconcile - and survive in - his newly found place in the world.
In his stunning second novel, Andrew K. Stone explores the subjectivity of good and evil in accordance to our status in society. As in his breakout novel All Flowers Die, Stone demonstrates his flair for balancing an engaging plot, rich thematic structure and finely developed characters to tell a story that's both moving and memorable.

Gritty and Insightful Portrayal of Survival.......2006-11-29
"Inching my way through the tunnel was like walking on the bottom of the ocean. I waded through the cold darkness, holding onto the right wall like a coral reef. Gusts of wind bit into me from behind and propelled me into the expanding blackness. As the tunnel became even darker, my senses evaporated. The air frosted my lungs." ~ pg. 241
Andrew K. Stone's memorable writing has an appeal beyond his well-designed plots and unique character sketches. He writes with heart and no matter what subject he is tackling, he creates a believable world where characters give us insight into the reasons people make decisions in a variety of situations we may never encounter.
Colin "Birdy" Franklin is a homeless man seeking escape from society, only to find himself drawn back into a culture of survivors, working in a world they will never question. Birdy gives us a unique viewpoint as he sees the realities of street life and takes the opportunity to survive, even while he questions his position, worried he will become like his father. Throughout the story, we come to understand Birdy's father as much as his childhood.
Andrew K. Stone captivates with original and poetic descriptions of the gritty environment he paints against dark slushy streets. I love how he enters a character's mind and lives there for the entire novel. His powers of description warm this story with a human intimacy and envelop you in a safety, not felt by the characters.
I think you will also enjoy "All Flowers Die" about a musician. That was my first introduction to Andrew K. Stone's writing. I hope he is writing another novel, because I love his writing style.
~The Rebecca Review
Disappearing into view.......2006-05-01
This book was quite intriquing. The main character's view of "normal behavior" slowly evolves to where he understands all individuals are various degrees removed from what is society's definition of normal. At first, when learning of his father's obsessive behavior that brought disaster to his family, he hated his father. As a result of his father's disgrace, he elected to run away and live his life as a non-person, wandering homeless, hiding from society. Eventually he concludes that no one can escape society and that "normal" is a relative term.
The story evokes a lot of thought from the reader as it delves into a dark subject some prefer not to think about. Once I was into the story, I could hardly put it down.
Do Not Leave This Stone Unturned.......2005-05-17
In this suspenseful novel, the antisocial lives of homeless people, criminal elements, and even a prominent but pathologically warped surgeon are interwined. The author uses a vivid imagination and descriptive language and dialogue to weave an unusual plot in a unique manner which depicts its dysfunctional and highly-flawed characters in a critical yet human light. The story is told in the first person by Colin (Birdy) Franklin, who leaves his upper class home as a teenager to live for many years in the forbidding underworld of Boston in order to escape a horrible reality involving his father which is not revealed until well into the book. The inner thoughts of this tortured yet intelligent soul trying to come to terms with his disenfranchised existence and his father's past, while at the same time surviving each new day, are what truly makes this absorbing tale intrinsically worthwhile as well as highly entertaining reading.
Not deserving of 4 1/2 stars.......2003-09-22
I often depend upon the reviews in Amazon for helping me to find reading that is a bit off track and different, but still entertaining. I picked this book for my book club and hated it! Now I've subjected 8 of my friends to its awful plot as well. The graffic depictions of the meat factory were disgusting! The main charater was unbelievable and the enemy unlikely. I wonder who the people who gave the book 5 stars were, the authors Mother?
Waste of Reading Time.......2003-01-15
.... This book was a monumental waste of my reading time. The characters were thinly drawn, the plot far-fetched and a bit ludricrous, and the ending disappointingly absurd. The author did indeed illustrate he enjoyed playing with words, but I didn't enjoy the game he liked to play. ...
Customer Reviews:
SF Detective Story.......2006-05-01
This was an SF detective story about an insurance "adjuster" (this adjuster uses weapons more than adding machines) trying to solve a locked-room theft - actually, multiple thefts from the locked room. The detective story was routine, and being it was SF, it was flavored with the a futuristic landscape. Not bad, a bit of a neat idea included, but overall not spectacular by any means. Do note that if you enjoy Foster's off-beat Spellsinger books, you should know that Greenthieves is a straight SF detective story.
Loved this book! Fantastically creative!.......1998-10-30
I really loved this novel, From cyborg to wizard! What a concept! I loved it! Look out Terminator. :) Wish there was a series..

Space opera is back with a bang!
Lieutenant Joel Gilmore is part of a space observation team who find themselves attacked by the very aliens they are watching. It becomes a race against time for their fellow soldiers to rescue them, but
in doing so, they unlock the shocking secrets of the solar system.
With thrilling action sequences and brilliantly characterized aliens, this science fiction novelist is one to watch–but be careful of the aliens. These are not Star Trek aliens with altered faces, but a glimpse of what really might be out there. . . .
From the Hardcover edition.

Fine YA adventure with interesting speculation about alien races.......2006-06-18
The Xenocide Mission, by Ben Jeapes, marketed as a Young Adult book, and works very well as such, though it is fully enjoyable foradults, in my view. (The lead characters include two humans in their early twenties, as well as a much older human, and an apparently much older alien.)
This novel opens on the joint Human/First Breed satellite called SkySpy, which is monitoring the fearsome aliens known as the Xenocides, or XCs, because they brutally exterminated the other intelligent species in their solar system. Young Joel Gilmore and his First Breed (or "Rustie") partner Boon Round are making an external repair when the XCs mount a surprise attack. The first priority is to ensure destruction of the computer banks and the removal of any chance of the XCs gaining FTL technology. Joel, thrust into a leadership role all of a sudden, heroically returns to the satellite with Boon Round while the rest of the survivors make their escape. Soon Joel and Boon Round are captives of the Xenocides.
One of the key Xenocides is Oomoing, a senior Mother of the Scientific Institute of one of their nations. She is summoned to SkySpy to study Joel and Boon Round. We learn that the Xenocides are fierce carnivores, and very warlike in basic orientation, but also that they are intelligent and not, on the face of it, xenocidal. Also, there is some strange mystery concerning the "Dead World", former home of the race the XCs exterminated. And as Oomoing tries to make peaceful contact with Joel and Boon Round, they get the chance to escape -- but only to the Dead World, and with Oomoing and another XC along.
Meanwhile, a rescue mission is organized from the Roving, home planet of the Commonwealth of Humans and First Breed. Joel Gilmore's father, Michael, a retired Commodore, and Joel's girlfriend, Marine Lieutenant Donna McCallum, in their different ways wangle themselves onto the mission. Once in XC space, the mission takes an unexpected turn, as the Xenocides attack and the Commonwealth ship is thrown into chaos by the treachery of an Earth-based observer and the only survivor of the race that formerly dominated the First Breed. (All this refers to back story which is presumably told in His Majesty's Starship.) Another xenocide is threatened, and so is the potential for cooperation among at least four alien races. Only if Joel, Boon Round, and Oomoing can come to terms with their mutually alien natures and work together to understand the mystery of the Dead World can this danger be averted.
This book is very enjoyable, a brisk, entertaining read, with some pretty neat alien races. It's a bit cynical about politics, both human and alien, but not in a hopeless way, rather a fairly realistic way. It might be too busy, with too many strange alien mysteries revealed, and too many plots within plots uncovered. Still, I liked it. It certainly might appeal to its intended audience of "Young Adults" -- and it will also appeal to adult readers of SF looking for a fine adventure story with some interesting speculation about alien races.
A great mission.......2003-04-17
"The Xenocide Mission" written by Ben Jeapes. In this book your imagination travels as you read and understand this thrilling and amazing book. This book is about an outer space mission, in which the crew of an asteroid, named SkySpy, have been sent to watch different life beings, whose technologies, and weapons are supreme or beyond than any of the Earth's. These extraterrestrial beings are called "Xenocides", but also known as "XCs". They are rich not only in technology, and weapons, but they are also aggressive to their enemies.
The "Big Scope" is one of the many surveillance equipment items, which goes around the SkySpy asteroid. The SkySpy is a secret base where Lieutenant Joel Gilmore, one of the main characters, works on the maintenance of the SkySpy. He was the first one to see the glowing white spots in the space, and he thought that some military strength laser was attacking them, but in fact the aliens they were supposed to watch were attacking them.
While you read throughout each page the action unfurls, such as battles, fights between the SkySpy crew, they get close to the XCs, and a lot more! Of course, with a peaceful ending.
My recommendations of this book goes to those that like stories of aliens, and outer space missions, mixed with mystery and a lot of action, that brings you not only to a different point of life, but also a different world.

Quick action and a complex plot.......2002-08-09
The Xenocide Mission appears under a Random House young adult trademark but its complexity will lend to its enjoyment by many an adult science fiction reader, as well. Joel is part of a space observation team that is attacked by the aliens they are observing. Trapped and awaiting rescue, they find fresh, new and dangerous insights on the aliens they had investigated previously from outside. Quick action and a complex plot makes The Xenocide Mission recommended for older young adults into adults.

Book Description
When restaurateur Keith McNally and co-chefs Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson opened Balthazar in 1997, it immediately became one of the hottest restaurants in the country. Famous for its star-studded clientele, a beautiful room in the chic SoHo neighborhood, and superbly executed food, Balthazar has been embraced by New Yorkers and visitors alike for its perfect evocation of a French brasserie.
The Balthazar Cookbook captures that energy, that style, and that cuisine, with recipes for the most-loved and most-accessible French dishes: seafood ranging from the ultra-simple Moules à la Marinière to more ambitious Bouillabaisse; chicken and game favorites that include Coq au Vin and Cassoulet; red-meat classics such as Braised Short Ribs and Blanquette de Veau; sides like the perfect French Fries or sublime Macaroni Gratin; and finales that include Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Pot de Crème. This is the best of French cooking, from one of the best-loved French restaurants in the country.

Book for a chef.......2007-01-10
This is a gorgeous cookbook, with delicious recipes. While some of the recipes are straight forward and easy, most are quite complex, with many steps and lots of ingredients. And while I have a very well stocked pantry, I could not find the ingedients needed in my local grocery store or fish market or gourmet store for some of the recipes. Everything that I have made has been delicious, and seasoned perfectly. This is a cookbook for serious cooks.
A Great collection of classic cafe fare..........2005-04-12
This cookbook is for the person who loves French cafés in general, and Balthazar in specific. In France, cafés are everywhere, and they are the center of social life much the same way as pubs are in England - the difference is that the food at the average English pub is terrible and the food at the average French café is great. Menus may vary from café to café, but there are certain standard items that they tend to have in common. Many consider Balthazar the best French café in New York. The irony is that - in France - cafés are informal and inexpensive places, whereas Balthazar is expensive, usually requires reservations, and almost has a celebrity or two eating there. What makes Balthazar a café is that it serves all the standard café fare, but with it's own unique touch.
What makes The Balthazar Cookbook so great is that it is a compendium of all the classic café items: "Steak Frites," "Moules a la Mariniere," and "Escargots with Garlic Butter," just to name a few. These aren't run-of-the-mill recipes, but Balthazar's own special ones. This is both the book's virtue and its vice. This is not a cookbook for the novice chef. Most of the recipes are fabulously complicated. It assumes that you have the basic skills of cooking as it does not go over simple procedures. It assumes that you have a well-stocked kitchen because many of the recipes call for specialized hardware like Dutch ovens and candy thermometers. It also assumes that you have access to hoity-toity gourmet food stores where you can get all of their obscure ingredients.
I attempted the basic café dish: Steak Frites. The steak was no problem as it is just grilled. What makes this special is the herb butter Balthazar puts on top. I cheated and used bottled sage and chives instead of fresh, and it still came out pretty good. The French fries proved more difficult as they require a thermometer to tell you when the peanut oil (I substituted vegetable) reaches EXACTLY 370 degrees for the first frying and 380 degrees for the second. I didn't have a thermometer so I guessed - the result was that they were nowhere near as good as the fries at Balthazar, which could be the best in the city. With fries you need mayonnaise. I had two failed attempts at making mine in the food processor (as they suggest) before moving on to the blender, which worked fine.
In the end, this is an excellent cookbook. It's only problem is that, for casual food, it takes a LOT of preparation.
Not great.......2004-04-02
Sorry-- I don't know what people are raving about. I am an avid epicurean, and have gone to most good restaurants in NY. I just don't think Balthazar's recipes or food holds a candle to other NY institutions, like Gotham, Gramercy, etc. The food at and recipes from Balthazar always tastes a little too greasy and unrefined given how many steps are involved. Sorry, that's just my personal opinion after making almost ten of the Balthazar recipes.
A favorite, though a bit involved........2004-03-07
While I don't think this book would be good for novice cooks, this is a great introductory book for classic French cooking.
I've tried several recipes, and have been happy with the results of all of them. The recipes do seem to be a bit involved and called for some expensive ingredients, but it's unlikely you'll be making many of the recipes frequently, so for special occasions, it's worth the extra trouble. And the trouble pays off in spades. For example, I made the recipe for braised short ribs, which were quite delicious. As an added bonus, though, the recipe made enough delicious gravy that I froze in tiny containers and ended up serving along side steaks and beef for the next two months.
Finally, I also really like the look of the book, which is evocative of the golden age of food extravagance, in Edwardian books published 100 or more years ago. It's full of beautiful photographs, and could probably be right at home on a hardcore foodie's coffee table.
Excellent Book.......2004-01-06
This is one of the best cookbooks I've purchased in a long time (and I buy a lot of them!). I buy restaurant cookbooks mainly for inspiration, since the recipes are often too complex to be prepared at home. I was pleasantly surprised when I started thumbing through the Baltahzar Cookbook - there where a number of dishes that I wanted to try right away. The dishes certainly aren't simple, but if you're not afraid of making your own veal stock or planning ahead to marinate duck legs in wine overnight, you should have a lot of fun with these recipes.
For those who've eaten at Balthazar, the book brings back found memories. For those who haven't, the excellent forward, and great pictures provide a real sence of what this great restaruant has to provide. Truly "comfort food" at its best.

Customer Reviews:
awesome book!!.......2005-08-02
This book has taught me alot about pugs, especially because I am going to be not only a first time pug owner but also a first time dog owner. I have learned how to be patient in the training process and can't wait to put the skills and training ideas to work!!
too much but not enough.......2005-07-25
this is not good enough for the serious pug owner - it is too general regarding dogs but not nearly specific enough regarding pugs. the format is haphazard - one gets the impression that the author has 'read up' on pugs in order to write this book, but i doubt if she had owned or shown a pug. the index is all over the place; avoid this book and buy one by a professional pug expert.
Pug Dummies.......2005-07-10
This book covers everything you need to know about pugs. From care all the way to breeding and showing.
Book Description
Is it 18th-century Sèvres or a 20th-century copy? A steal or a rip-off? This Miller’s price guide, like the others in the popular series, delivers authoritative answers to questions like these in two sections: “What to Look For” covers how to recognize the important factories and designers, how to date and identify an item (with illustrations of marks), what determines value, and how to spot fakes. “What to Pay” reveals how much specific items actually sold for at dealers and auction houses. More than 1,400 items from a variety of sources are valued and illustrated in full-color, from 18th-century Meissen to 20th-century Royal Doulton. There are pieces for modest budgets, too, including popular categories such as Staffordshire and Wade.

Good week-end project book.......1998-05-22
A pity the publisher has not kept this book in print. Almost every wookworker has a trim/scrap pile that begs to be used. This book is crammed with projects to use those scraps and to recycle any old crates or pallets you have access to. This book should be a must for every woodworker or cabinet maker no matter how advanced they are.

Book Description
Throughout time, numerous cultures have used body markings to signify status or enhance beauty. In Western society, during the early part of the 20th century, tattooing was primarily limited to military personnel and fringe communities such as bikers. However, the last 10 years have seen a mainstream acceptance of body art, in large part due to the high visibility of pro athletes and musicians. BODY ART is a photographic essay on what has become one of the main components of pop culture in America today. Gary Lee Heard has the uncanny ability to capture not just the ink on the subjects, but a glimpse into their personalities through the more than 200 striking images. These powerful portraits are accompanied by quotes from the individuals who have decided to express themselves in this dramatic art form.

Another Art Form Well Presented.......2005-01-01
One of the aspects of contemporary art that is most striking is the choice of matrix on which artists elect to create art: Goldsworthy us the earth's surface, the Christos wrap buildings, graffiti has been considered art since Basquait brought it to our attention in the 1980s, animal skins, streets, etc - the list is endless. In this very handsomely photographed book of richly colored images, authors Gary Lee Heard and David Culturra celebrated the ever-growing fad of tattoo and piercing as an art form n this country. And in this volume not only is the art well documented, but the 'matrix' talks: the various models who posed for these fascinating photographs are given some space to comment on their motivations and beliefs in what they have chosen to do or have done to their bodies.
Not that tattoo and piercing are new elements of body decoration: Heard is quick to demonstrate that many tribes of peoples other than whose whom he elects to photograph have been using these techniques as ritual adornment for centuries. But the point of the book is to display the at times extraordinarily beautiful compositions that use the human body as canvas, using the popular techniques available in every city of the USA.
This is basically a picture book, but one that bears repeated viewing to absorb all the intricacies of the art of tattooing and piercing. A valuable addition to the art library literature. Grady Harp, December 2004
Page 65 rocks!.......2004-08-18
You are going to see the true art of tattooing. Not everyone gets their whole body done, but you will see different aspects of it. I especially like Trevor Sibary on page 65 as he is my son and has not only received beautiful work by his dad, Falcon Fred, but also did 3 of my tattoo's (mom specials, lol) and he far exceeded anything his father could have taught him. They tattoo out of Columbus, GA at Falcon's on Broadway.
Decent enough........2004-06-01
I was/am strongly considering getting a Tattoo and I picked this book up in the local Borders. One thing I'll say is don't pay the full $35 price.
It's got a lot of neat and interesting pictures along with quotes from the owner of the tattoos. It's a good book to look at a couple times, but you'll go through it quick (Making it not worth the price).
One plus: It's definitely a good conversation piece. Some of the pictures in this book will stun people, make them laugh, or cause genuine interest.
