    Book Description

This evocative novel is a compellingly honest look at the dreams and desperate realities of life on the land in the Australian outback. With ultimate hopes of moving to a house by the sea, Milivan and his wife, Michelle, struggle to make ends meet on their riverside property in a small outback farming community. In this arid country, they face challenges from drought, neighbors, and the wrenchingly familiar rural cycle of hope and despair. In vivid language, this novel captures both the devastated landscape and the living human desire in this powerfully authentic story of life on the land.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely to be forgotten!.......2007-01-24

I wanted to like this book! It started out with the promise of really bad villains and dramatic discoveries that may answer some questions of how the Nethiril Empire developed. With the introduction of some lackluster characters, and the same sort of villainous dudes seen before, I seen some potential for a really good adventure. What a let down!

I would give spoilers but there is very little left to spoil. The plot spirals unoriginally out of control, using elements from Tolkein galore. The little goblin uses dialog identical to Gollum. The whole purpose of the Nether scroll goal is very disappointing. By the time these cardboard character find them, I didnt care. Maybe, Netherise Arcanist showed up and zapped this author for nearly sinking the my enthusiasm for this series.

There have been some good, mediocre and bad Forgotten Realms books. This gets my vote as the worst of all. Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast regrouped its talent search and found some writers who actually may like contributing to the vast epic of the Forgotten Realms. The direction Lynn Abbey was taking it was down, indeed things looked a little dark at that time. Wizards inherited some talented writers; Greenwood, Salvatore, and Cunningham. In fact, I am going to explore some of thier new writers. Things could not get any worse than the Nether Scroll!

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of the Realms, but not bad either.......2005-08-18

The Lost Empires series is a series of stand alone novels featuring empires of old that have been lost only to searched out and found again for various reasons.

While this book is certainly not the best that the Forgotten Realms has to offer, it's certainly not the worst either. For thos familiar witht he Realms this is a nice book to pick up as it gives some history and lore about the Nethril empire. For those not familiar witht he Realms this book will seem like a waste of time.

I would recommend this book only if you enjoy Forgotten Realms books and have a decent understanding of what goes on there.

      3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2004-02-07

The Nether Scroll is disapointing to most of Lynn Abbey's fans as it is certainly not her best work. But it is still an enjoyable read. I finished it rather quickly and it kept my attention.

      1 out of 5 stars What a stinker.......2002-12-12

Reading this book was like being force fed a food that makes you want to vomit. You don't want to continue, but you really have no choice unless you want to waste 6 bucks. There are some nice points to the book, the female warrior was nice, and the things the mage learned from the scroll should have been expounded upon sooner as it was the only real item of interest in the whole dang book. As it is the writing was slow and the majority of characters were uninteresting. I can say I will never reread this book.

      2 out of 5 stars Lore? No........2001-11-13

The "Lost Empires" category lured me to this book. I hoped to find more information about the past, something to compliment the Netherese set (which I do have). Instead, it's a story of very modern peoples, and only passing references to the artifact of the title. There is one section, late in the novel, giving a better idea of the nature of these scrolls, but just as a tiny glimmer was shown, it is ripped away revealing nothing of interest.
This novel has a decent story on its own, and if you want political intregue with the Zhents, this has some value. But it's not where my interests lie. (...)

          Book Description

Church Suppers celebrates gatherings of neighbors, family, and friends with delicious, down-home recipes from all over the United States and Canada. These are the dishes we remember and cherish, that bring us back to a simpler time: Fiesta Dip, Red Flannel Hash, Sloppy Joe Turnovers, Green Bean Casserole, Earthquake Cake, Blueberry Buckle...plus many regional and ethnic foods: Moussaka, Jambalaya, Chiles Relleños, Babka, Cannoli, and more. And because the recipes come from real people with bustling families, busy work schedules, imperfect kitchens, and realistic budgets, they are easy to prepare and focus as much on simplicity as they do on taste.

Full of local flavor and rounded out with line drawings and anecdotes about the contributing churches, Church Suppers is a delightful addition to any home kitchen.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, at best.......2006-07-21

I love and collect soul food cookbooks, as well as church community cookbooks. However, what I most love about them is the warmth of why the people and recipes are so special. I COULDN'T FIND ONE SUCH WORD HERE! There is much more warmth and personality in a Betty Crocker book. I strongly recommend that you seek out cookbooks by Norma Jean and Carole Darden, Sylvia Woods, Joyce White, Patti LaBelle, and other wonderful soul food authors who take the time to tell you WHY each of their recipes are so special. The Harlem Abyssisian Baptist Church cookbook also does this ... only this one is sterile and lacking, so I definitely can't recommend it. What a waste!

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook.......2006-05-10

I do not normally write reviews but I really appreciate the reviews I read on other cookbooks. I collect cookbooks and cook for a hobby and for a living. This cookbook is wonderful. I have spent over 20 yrs trying to find the "perfect" coleslaw recipe. The Memphis coleslaw is absolutely wonderful. I also love the pasta salad recipe... and the long searched for strawberry pretzel dessert. This is the first cookbook that I check if I want to make something. If there is an old recipe that you are looking for, you will probably find it in this book.. and it will be delicious!

          5 out of 5 stars beautiful cookbook.......2005-11-27

Coldwater aquariums are covered in a separate section that shows how to establish an artificial habitat for fish requiring temperate saltwater.

              4 out of 5 stars Nice reference.......2007-01-10

When I bought this book I had already been in the sw hobby for six years, but for some reason I had to have this book. Needs to be updated, but it offers a great and broad foundation of the hobby. It is easy to read, and has awesome pictures. Also some of the species names were different from what I have seen in most other books. ???

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Doctors Lobby.......2006-12-16

This is a wonderful book for the lay person to read as they wait to see their doctor. The pictures are lovely. I gave it as a gift to my favorite dermatologist who happens to have a saltwater aquarium on display.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2006-11-03

We've used this book mostly for identification of fish that we didn't recognize at the pet store. The pictures are fantastic and it covers a broad scope of information on setting up the tank, reefs, fish and invertebrates. It gives information on what they eat, who they get along with, and what conditions they prefer. In some cases, however, the directions for caring for a certain type of fish were not as detailed as we would have liked. If you want a general saltwater reference book, this is a great investment. If you're looking for specific, detailed instructions on how to care for different things in your tank, another book might be a good supplement to this one.

4 out of 5 stars Environmental awareness approach for new hobbyists.......2006-03-13

Full of excellent information about the marine bio-sphere. Most of the information is presented in such a way that environmental awareness is passed to the reader, which will be good food-for-thought for any new hobbyists. Crisp & clear photographs are backed by descriptions of marine life, which give a clear understanding of the subjects chosen.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and informative........2006-03-09

This book is a good reference book for fetermining what fish you might want to get down the road. I wouldn't recommend it for your initial tank startup as there are better books for that, but for fish ID and compatibility, it is nice. There are lots of wonderful pictures and overall good information.

Anyway, how can we expect truth from someone who could have opened the door of any church and entered anytime to explore options. Even while practicing witchcraft, etc? But, he's abandoned the Mormans and witches. Is the Prophecy Center next? And, The Prophecy Center sponsoring his Google video? The same organization who advertises and supports Assist 247 which lowered the director's cholesterol level in thirty days from well over a thousand to a little over one hundred? You paying attention medical researchers?

If you saw some people who were down and out not being very successful in life, but after they joined a secret club they ended up being very well off and had the life of Reilly, you'd think "thats the way to go, how do I join up"?
The lower degree masons are constently kept in the dark by the higher degree Masons, kind of symbolic isn't it? they are always searching for light.
Let me ask you this, when you are in a dark barely lit room and are brought in blind folded, told to get on your knees and repeat an oath with a spear pressed against your heart, did you ever think that this group may not be at all what those out side the group have been lead to believe it is? For those masons reading this, I am speaking directly to you guys. When you swore that if you agreed to have tour tounge yanked out by the roots and your throat slashed from ear to ear if you revealed any secrets of the lodge, did it ever occure to you that there was a very sinister reason for this?

When you go to the lavish partys you'll notice the beautiful ladys there who always seem to take an interest in you and after a few drinks she will suggest that you go with her to her room for a little fun and "don't worry, your wife will never find out".
She's right about that providing that you do what you are told later on by the higher ups when they what you to "TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS" so to speak for the lodge or a "BROTHER". If you do, your wife will never get to see the pictures or the video that was being taken from behind a two way mirror or the in room hidden camera that was showing you "getting busy" with the lady you were partying with at the lodge convention. If you dont do what you are told, you'll be looking at divorce and endless problems the rest of your life. Thats the kind of group you just joined, one that blackmails it's members into secrecy for life. Something else too, being blackmailed is the only way a Mason can get beyond the 3rd degree on up to the 32nd degree.

If you ever make it up to the 33rd degree, you'll learn why the 33rd's and above have their own meetings with out the 32nd's and below being invited, that is because the 33rd's and above openly pray to LUCIFER by name this is the organization that you have joined. Try telling the higher ups that you want to get out and see what happens to you future. Take care Masons and I hope that you find the light that you've been searching for. If you get out of Masonry you will find the light of GOD but if you stay in Masonry, the only light at the end of their tunnel, is the light from the fires of hell. Check out the video "FREEMASONRY FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT". it has testimony from former Masons, you're thinking "FORMER MASONS?" thats right former Masons, listen to their testimony and see why they are former Masons.

              1 out of 5 stars Well, now..........2006-03-25

Several other reviewers have been touting Schnobelen as a 'Mormon, Mason and Satanist'...

I hope those people realize that his own writings place him in all three of those groups at once, as well as several others that never existed *and* several that don't even *offer* the services he claims to have obtained.

William Schnobelen has nothing of any use to teach anyone who isn't interested in the Religious Right's pandering drivel.

While I was researching (Yes, Mr. Schnobelen, the 'R' word) this man's 'works' (and I use the term very loosely indeed), I came across several web-pages and directions to articles -- not only by those of other faiths, but by those of *his own faith* -- that thoroughly debunk the pablum that Schnobelen expects us all to lap up willingly.

Avoid this book like the plague.

5 out of 5 stars Tough to put this book down.......2006-03-04

Anyone who really thinks Masonry is harmless should read this book. This is a man who was in it (and I mean deep in it), and was able to find his way out, thank God.

William Schnoebelen is a former Mason, Mormon, and Satanist. This book isn't just based on good research into Masonry, although he clearly has done some solid research. But this is largely based on his intimate knowledge of the rituals an secrets of Freemasonry. Truly this man gives us a peek behind the curtain to see Masonry's dark side.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting read..........2006-01-26

I have read the book--and well, am surprised at what I read (especially since it's true!) I found it to be useful--yeah, occasionally, it's kind of tedious, but in some spots, interesting.

I would just briefly like to comment on Masonry in general. It's this: Masonry has already been established as a secret society and a religion. They actually do have secret stuff going on behind closed temple doors (and if you don't believe me, you can go to any encyclopedia and find this out for yourself.) They actually aren't picky on which deity you choose--in fact, they are quite lenient!

Everything I've said so far is pretty much 100% fact; feel free to do the research if you don't believe me.

              Book Description

A Collection of all the Most Important Documents on the Subject of Speculative Free Masonry. This is the single most important exposé of Freemasonry ever published on American soil. Long out of print and difficult to obtain, this book was a product of the "Morgan episode" and has since become one of the most sought after items by all students of Masonic ritual. Once dubbed "the Bible of the anti-Masons," it includes hundreds of pages of verbatim degree work copied from rare manuscripts which are unobtainable elsewhere. Henry W. Coil wrote in his Masonic Encyclopedia that this book gives the Scottish Rite rituals as they were worked before Albert Pike revised them, and indeed, some of its rituals are extremely similiar to those in the 1783 Francken Manuscript. Having studied both Pike's rituals and those included in this book, we believe that Pike used Light on Masonry to help in writing his "Magnum Opus" because the secret work in both books is too close to be mere coincidence. RITUALISTIC CONTENTS: Entered Apprentice; Fellow Craft; Master Mason; Mark Master; Past Master; Most Excellent Master; Royal Arch; Knight of the Red Cross; Knight Templar and Kt. of Malta; Knight of the Christian Mark and Guard of the Conclave; Knight of the Holy Sepulchre; The Holy and Thrice Illustrious Order of the Cross; Secret Master; Perfect Master; Intimate Secretary; Provost and Judge; Intendant of the Buildings, or Master in Israel; Elected Knight of Nine; Elected Grand Master, or Illustrious Elected of Fifteen; Illustrious Knight or Sublime Knight Elected; Grand Master Architect; Knight of the Ninth Arch; Grand Elect Perfect and Sublime Mason; Prince of Jerusalem; Knight of the East and West; Knight of the Eagle and Sovereign Prince of Rose Croix de Heroden; Grand Pontiff; Venerable Grand Master of all Symbolic Lodges, Sov. Prince of Masonry, Master Advitiam, or Grand Pontiff; Knight of the Royal Axe, or Hache (hatchet); Chief of the Tabernacle; Prince of the Tabernacle; Knight of the Brazen Serpent; Prince of Mercy, or Scotch Trinitarian; Sovereign Commander of the Temple at Jerusalem; Kt. Adept of the Eagle, or Sun; Knight of Kadosh; Prince of the Royal Secret; Sovereign Grand Inspector General; Circular of Grand Inspectors; Elu de Perignan; Le Petit Architect; Grand Architect, or Compagnon Ecossois; Le Maitre Ecossois; Chevalier de l'Orient; Le Chevalier Rose Croix; Chevalier Prussien. ALSO INCLUDES the anti-Masonic committee reports, convention proceedings, orations, essays, etc. relative to the abduction of William Morgan, the trial of Eli Bruce (and others) for conspiracy, a History of Freemasonry and much more. This is a facsimile of the third (and best) edition, printed in 1829.

This fourth book in the Brotherhood of Light Lessons sits on my shelf alongside the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, Morals and Dogma, and Scottish Rite Illustrated. Although I have read such august titles I can make no pretense at being an authority on the subject. I probably fit in the category of `Curious Onlooker'. I am curious about masonry not so much as a contemporary fraternal order but in the history it shares with other mystery school traditions such as the Rosicrucian, Theosophist, and Hermetic orders. Zain, who was one of the most respected astrologers and prolific metaphysical writers of his generation brings his professional insights to this hoary tradition. In this book he reveals how the ritual and symbolism of freemasonry is actually embedded in more ancient stellar religious practices. The information contained in this volume along with other details found in his other writings on the Sacred Tarot and Astrological Signatures helps to connect the dots between Masonic lore and the Egyptian Mystery School tradition.

This book is 1 of a series of books 22 in all written by Mr Benjamine over the course of 30 yrs. He penned these editions using the pen name CC.Zain. They are the core books of the faith known as "The religion of the Stars" The Church of Light in Los Angeles is the headqtrs. of this organization. Anyone wanting to read a complete compilation of whats better known as The Hermetic philosophy should start by reading this volume. It is probably the only work in print today that places Masonry into it's proper historical perspective. It also places Masonry correctly within the long "Hermetic tradition" that underlies most of western thought. Mr. Benjamine wrote these works for the general public in the early part of the 20th century and the english now seems a bit archaic and out of date. However the ideas are timeless and revolutionary. These books are a must read for any serious or aspiring student of the occult. I have read all 22 of Mr Benjamines books and highly recommend this work.

In Le Corbusier's Formative Years we learn what made Le Corbusier the person, and the designer that he was. Using twenty years of research, H. Allen Brooks has unearthed an incredible wealth of documents that show every facet of the formative years of this influential architect.

"There is much in this fine volume for anyone interested not just in architecture, but in the roots of human creativity and in the origins of the most powerful artistic current of our century. . . . Once revered as semidivine beings and collaborators in the hard work of transporting goods and materials, Thailand's elephants have fallen on hard times. With the destruction of their forested habitats, a consequent nationwide ban on hardwood logging, and the decline of traditional agriculture in the rapidly urbanizing country, their numbers have declined from tens of thousands just a decade ago to only a few thousand today. Many of the surviving elephants have been put to work in traveling circuses or used for black-market labor, subject to overwork and all manner of abuse.

Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid, Russian expatriates who have been working together for more than 30 years, have a knack, writes art curator Mia Fineman, for "transforming the solemn rituals of high art into high comedy." It was with the utmost seriousness, however, that the two, on reading of the elephants' plight, traveled to Thailand and established the Thai Elephant Art School, through whose offices elephants create pop-art masterpieces with palette, brush, and trunk. (Elephants, it seems, have a well-known gift for the visual arts and, in the Thai case, adore the work of Vasily Kandinsky.) Sold to collectors on the world market, pachyderm-painted pieces generated $75,000 at a single early auction, the proceeds of which were used to establish and maintain sanctuaries throughout Thailand.

Illustrated with elephantine artwork and more than 100 photographs documenting Komar and Melamid's project, this book makes a wonderfully offbeat gift, and one of a very good cause. --Gregory McNamee

                                Book Description

For centuries elephants in Thailand have been revered as a nationalsymbol, worshiped as living gods and employed as beasts of burden in the nation's thriving timber industry. But when logging was banned in Thailand in 1990, these noble animals fell on hard times. Reduced to performing tricks for tourists by day and illegal heavy labor by night, Thailand's elephants were exhausted, malnourished, and dying in alarming numbers.

Hearing of their plight, a pair of unlikely heroes came to the rescue, Wildly eccentric Russian emigre artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid devised a brilliant scheme: to create the world's first quadruped occupational retraining program-a network of art schools for unemployed elephants. Taking a cue from elephant trainers in a number of American zoos, Komar and Melamid taught the animals to hold brushes in their trunks and apply paint to canvas. And the results were astonishing: Not only did the elephants' paintings closely resemble the expansive gestural work of such Abstract Expressionist artists as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, but the pachyderm painters also began to develop clearly distinct regional styles-lyrical and expressive in the northern Thai school, subtle and atmospheric in the east, dynamic and angst ridden in the central school.

Sanctioned by the World Wildlife Fund, the Asian Elephant Art and Conservation Project has been a remarkable success; paintings by some of the most talented elephant artists have been auctioned at Christie's for thousands of dollars, generating funds to provide proper care for the elephants and support for their trainers.

When Elephants Paint follows Komar and Melamid and their eclectic entourage through Thailand's lush jungles and steaming cities, describing the odd encounters and creative cajoling that helped turn this seemingly whimsical idea into a concrete, beneficial reality. Illustrated with more than 100 photographs, including actual elephant paintings, this riotously funny and provocative book offers a valuable lesson in wildlife conservation and startling revelations about the nature of art itself.

This book has many pictures and covers the material well. My only disappointment was that it was written to appeal to a slightly younger audience than I had hoped. However, I do not regret my purchase. I would highly recommend this book.

                                5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2006-02-19

This lovely book is important proof of the highly evolved state of consciousness in elephants -- mental and emotional. It has wonderful photos of actual paintings by elephants, and is written in an amusing and witty style. It is an inspiring read for anyone interested in animals, but I think also helps cross the gap between those who already attuned to animals and those who need to have their eyes opened to what animals are really like.

                                3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2001-03-03

Beautiful photography and interesting text, but I was interested in the actual art as painted by the elephants, but there is very little of that. Mostly pictures of jungles. If you like that you will like the book. If you want to see the acutual artwork you will be very dissapointed.

                                        Book Description

Essays and interviews from one of the most insightful and thought-provoking black intellectuals to emerge since the heyday of the civil rights movement.

Here, collected for the first time, are interviews and essays representing Michael Eric Dyson's most important thinking on race and identity. Exploring such topics as "whiteness" as seen through a black man's eye, modernism and postmodernism in black culture, and the emancipating role of black music from the plantation to the ghetto, Open Mike is a perfect introduction to Dyson's work and a must-have for students and scholars in African American Studies and Cultural Studies.

Unlike the first reviewer of Dyson's book who said he was a "pinhead" I find this book an extrodinary review of the social conditions, in which our society subjects us all too. And please, can we not call authors demeaning names when we write reviews??!!! The person who wrote the first review using the word "pinhead" must be an adolescent and sounds jealous and angry. Thanks.

Much is made of dyson's intellectual prowess; this just goes to show you that all things are relative. There are organisms shuffling down the street to whom dyson's intellect would, one assumes, seem impressive. But that don't necessarily make it so. You may, at some point, have heard the term pinhead. The term signifies that the owner of such a head has a tiny little brain, a "peabrain" if you will. This, in a nutshell, is dyson. He meanders around offering weak commentary and observation that appeals chiefly to the MTV and BET crowd. This is to say, he offers nothing of value other than allowing Penn to make their quota. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs.

Open Mike is a book that I picked up on accident and I thnak whatever angel was sitting on my shoulder that day. I had never been blessed enough to have been exposed to Dyson before and I was quite surprise about what I found. This man is BAD. He has the same theoretical and intellectual presence as Malcom, Martin, Carmichael, etc. In Open Mike, a series of interviews Dyson gave, I found that I was surprise that anyone could speak this way from the hip. I often wondered if he'd practiced what he had to say. Then I heard him speak at the State of the Black Chruch conference in Detroit, MI 2003. He's for real.

Open Mike is an honest and revealing account of Dyson's life, his thoughts, and the controversies that he's started. No one is safe from this man 's tongue---no one. Pick it up and be enlightened.

As a mentee of Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, I can certainly attest to his rhetorical genius, his intellectual compassion, his scholarly depth and his cerebral authority on a wide range of cultural, philosophical and theoretical themes. But as it occurs, many acadamicians (i.e. Adolph Reed) have questioned his scholarship, and even if he is a serious intellectual, suggesting that his writing tends to gravitate toward petty motives that deal with popular culture and the commercialization of societal issues. Nevermind that one of the most noted philosophers, Antonio Gramsci proposed the notion of the "organic intellectual" as one who could arise from the people but never become so esoterically connected to some ebony or ivory academy. That is Dyson--the organic intellectual--and we Dysonians appreciate him as a defining intellectual acrobat regardless of the commentaries put out by PEDANTIC scholars who resist mainstream culture, pretty much because they, themselves, fail to identify with it.

But still, Dyson answers his critics with Open Mike, a scholarly enterprise of the highest order. The book is a collection of conversations on philosophy, race, sex, culture and religion, that definitively evinces the "seriousness" of Dyson's scholarship. Dyson effortlessly registers his deepening intellectual and moral convictions on every subject from poststructuralist theory to the polyrhythmic structures of African American musical traditions and from Nietzsche's view of God to the prism through with Nas analyzed black social plight.

As Mark Anthony Neal stated in the foreword, "Open Mike is a critical beat-down!" I recommend that this scholarly contribution be digested by every intellect for its complex exploration into the various layers and dimensions of black radical discourse, politics and ethics. And I even further, invite all general readers to add this book to their reading appetite, as Dyson's consistent flow and vivid portrayals are sure to delight your thirst for an impassioned discussion of the social dynamics that affect us all.
