Book Description

A zany, disturbing novel set amid the splendors and excesses of New Orleans

Eleanor Rushing is a first-person narrative tour de force. While Eleanor is blessed with acute powers of observation and the ability to remember everything, her recollections and impressions are nevertheless often at odds with those of the people around her. As her "relationship" with a local married Methodist minister spins out of control, the loquacious and endearing Eleanor manages to charm us completely. Even as we begin to realize that surviving a childhood marred by tragedy has exacted a terrible toll, we can't help being her willing and faithful admirers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well-written, but not for everyone.......2002-06-29

I was instantly pulled into the first-person tale of Eleanor Rushing. However, shortly into the story she relates an event of sexual abuse (concerning herself as a child) that I found so disturbing I almost quit reading. I was glad I continued, because it is an amazing tightrope job of writing, in an entertaining manner, the life story of a traumatized child who grew into a delusional schizophrenic. As in real life, one is not always sure where the line is drawn between reality and delusion, but Patty Friedmann carefully and cleverly points the direction to truths. The book was so well written that I would guess some major book reviewers shyed away from endorsement because of the uncomfortable sexual content.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, and hard to stop reading.......2002-02-13

Reading this book, from the first page to the last, it was very rare to have any intervals between my continuous reading. This book seems to follow through so well throughout the story that you just have the feeling that you need to keep on reading. Throughout the first parts of the book, the reader may be a bit unsure of how delusional Eleanor really is, how much she really does suffer from this disorder is not revealed to the reader until the end of the book when Eleanor, too, learns just how much she has created in her own world. Though she cannot break herself off from the believes truly, and this leaves the reader in a state of knowing what Eleanor is feeling, finding that her entire past, things that she believed so deeply were just memories of a story in her head, and she is unwilling to let go, is seemingly very devestating. Yet at the same time the reader knowing, too, that if they were told such a thing that would have no problem trying to see things in a logical manner. This book is really explicit on describing the truama of this disorder. Letting the reader see it all from the eyes of the mentally disturbed rather than that of an onlooker, does leave the reader a bit confused on the truth and Eleanor's version of the truth, but somehow i think that, that may have been the point...

2 out of 5 stars strange.......2001-01-06

I read this book for a school project, the reveiws and summaries suggested that the book would be funny and entertaining but I and my classmates found it to be disturbing and we regret reading it. We honestly feel for the main character, but I think someone should give you a warning before reading this book, it is very explict. The book goes into detail about the sexual abuse the main character goes through, we don't feel the book is worth the time is takes to read it.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Eleanor! So-So Book........2000-04-11

I read this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. It was engrossing and I fell in love with Eleanor. But when I finished I was disappointed. Things were not clarified to the point that an analitical mind could sort it out. Eleanor's delusions vs. reality were never separated enough that the reader had a firm grasp of what Eleanor's reality really was. A plus for the book is that Eleanor's character has a lot of depth, and I didn't regret getting to know her.

          BANNED IN BROOKLYN
In 1962, at the height of the cold war, the Brooklyn-based Topps Chewing Gum Company released a set of trading cards that combined a classic, H.G. Wells-style alien invasion with the graphic atrocities of war. The result were the legendary Mars Attacks cards, and the reaction was immediate.
National uproar: Deemed too gruesome for innocent young minds, the cards were quickly suppressed.
But even as they disappeared from the market, their cult status grew. . . and grew. Finally, in 1995, Topps re-released the set, adding new--and equally gruesome--cards. The invasion began anew, leading to comic books, novels, a major motion picture deal (with Tim Burton directing), and other insidious means by which the Martian wave would spread across the land.
In War Dogs of the Golden Horde, the mayhem escalates to a global scale. Martian armies invade Mongolia--only to discover that the descendants of Genghis Khan are as fierce and warlike as the legendary conqueror. The merciless will win the day. The question is, who is more savage: Mongol or Martian?

In Mongolia we meet a man named Dog. He is riding around basically trying to make it in life. He meets a guy named Bynar who tells him the Martians have invaded and set up a wall to protect their conquered lands on earth, in an ironic twist of fate the old great wall of China has been incorporated into this "World Wall." The two then forge an alliance and vow to find out what is going on.

I liked this book, this and the movie make a great edition to any sci-fi buffs collection. Whatever you do, don't miss the last 20 pages.

Quite strange reading, but once you get used to the gratuitous killing and understand the characters then this really is an excellent read. I hated the film and I hated the other book (Martian deathtrap).

Since 1990, Jerry Traunfeld has been the chef at the Herbfarm, a restaurant-nursery nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Washington State devoted to propagating an exceptional variety of culinary herbs, edible flowers, and greens. People wait months for a table at this restaurant, where Traunfeld's unaffected yet sophisticated cooking unfolds in a nine-course dinner. Reading his recipes, you understand why. It is hard to get through even the first chapter, on soups, without starting a shopping list for making Green Gazpacho, a cooling blend of cucumbers and green pepper with spearmint, parsley, and cilantro, or Herbal Chicken Noodle Soup, lavish with fresh basil, chives, tarragon, and marjoram.

After enticing you with the story of his signature dish, a green salad made with up to 30 ingredients, each literally harvested and assembled on the plate one leaf and blossom at a time, Traunfeld shows how, using more typical resources, you can construct a salad friends will declare a delicious work of art. To make it really simple, he provides a chart listing 50 possible choices that helps you balance the flavors, including hot, sweet, bitter, and aromatic, and the colors and textures that make a salad more than a plate of lovely greens.

However, if you don't live in a culinary paradise like the Seattle area, only have access to a typical supermarket, and you don't want to grow your own herbs, you can still infuse your cooking with the same enticing magic Traunfeld creates at the Herbfarm. Just tuck sprigs of thyme, rosemary, or oregano between the slices of a loaf of country bread spread with butter or olive oil and roasted garlic, wrap it in foil, and pop it in the oven for a quick 12 minutes. Or try Mashed Potatoes with Toasted Coriander, the seeds adding earthy flavor to a perennial favorite, and serve with chicken piccata enlivened with fresh dill.

Traunfeld is such a good teacher and clear writer that you follow with confidence when he guides you through Herb-Smoked Salmon--first dry-rubbed, then smoked over dried stems from basil, thyme, or fennel and finally baked until the fish is just gently set. You also get an introduction to the Japanese concept of umami, a state of food perfection that Traunfeld achieves in his Umami Carrot Soup with Mint.

Following the 200 recipes and alluring photos of some prepared dishes, you learn about growing herbs, both in the garden and in containers. A section describing herbs and edible flowers, from angelica to violets, is ample and articulate enough to stand on its own as a book, and those interested in gardening will appreciate the list of nurseries here. Finally, this section includes a table covering 29 herbs that will help you transform your own favorite dishes simply by adding fresh herbs. --Dana Jacobi

                Book Description

Not so long ago, parsley was the only fresh herb available to most American cooks. Today, bunches of fresh oregano and rosemary can be found in nearly every supermarket, basil and mint grow abundantly in backyards from coast to coast, and garden centers offer pots of edible geraniums and lemon thyme. But once these herbs reach the kitchen, the inevitable question arises: Now what do I do with them? Here, at last, is the first truly comprehensive cookbook to cover all aspects of growing, handling, and cooking with fresh herbs.

Jerry Traunfeld grew up cooking and gardening in Maryland, but it wasn't until the 1980s, after he had graduated from the California Culinary Academy and was working at Jeremiah Tower's Stars restaurant in San Francisco, that he began testing the amazing potential of herb cuisine. For the past decade, Jerry Traunfeld has been chef at The Herbfarm, an enchanted restaurant surrounded by kitchen gardens and tucked into the rainy foothills of the Cascade Mountains, east of Seattle. His brilliant nine-course herb-inspired menus have made reservations at the Herbfarm among the most coveted in the country.

Eager to reveal his magic to home cooks, Jerry Traunfeld shares 200 of his best recipes in The Herbfarm Cookbook. Written with passion, humor, and a caring for detail that makes this book quite special, The Herbfarm Cookbook explains everything from how to recognize the herbs in your supermarket to how to infuse a jar of honey with the flavor of fresh lavender. Recipes include a full range of dishes from soups, salads, eggs, pasta and risotto, vegetables, poultry, fish, meats, breads, and desserts to sauces, ice creams, sorbets, chutneys, vinegars, and candied flowers. On the familiar side are recipes for Bay Laurel Roasted Chicken and Roasted Asparagus Salad with Fried Sage explained with the type of detail that insures the chicken will be moist and suffused with the flavor of bay and the asparagus complemented with the delicate crunch of sage. On the novel side you will find such unusual dishes as Oysters on the Half Shell with Lemon Varbana Ice and Rhubarb and Angelica Pie.

A treasure trove of information, The Herbfarm Cookbook contains a glossary of 27 of the most common culinary herbs and edible flowers; a definitive guide to growing herbs in a garden, a city lot, or on a windowsill; a listing of the USDA has hardiness zones; how to harvest, clean, and store fresh herbs; a Growing Requirements Chart, including each herb's life cycle, height, pruning and growing needs, and number of plants to grow for an average kitchen; and a Cooking with Fresh Herbs Chart, with parts of the herb used, flavor characteristics, amount of chopped herb for six servings, and best herbal partners.

The Herbfarm Cookbook is the most complete, inspired, and useful book about cooking with herbs ever written.

                5 out of 5 stars Delightful treasure.......2007-10-07

I keep coming back to this cookbook again and again. It's probably not for your average cook- I've attending culinary school and have studied cooking for over 10 years- I want to mention this because some of the recipes are time-consuming and require more skill than average. There is a duck with cherry sage sauce recipe that is to die for in this cookbook- a true show stopper that guests talk about years later. It takes all day though because you end up making stock with the duck carcass. It's so well worth it!!! There is an EXCELLENT fall mushroom soup I've made over and over again. I highly recommend the quality recipes here.

The author of this book has a great talent with words. He truly writes stories that tell you the background of the recipes, bringing you the sights and smells and sounds. You can tell that he absolutely loves food in all its forms.

I have really enjoyed this cookbook and have tried several recipes. While some of them have been more "gourmet" than I usually cook, most of the recipes have actually sounded fancier than they are (which is a good thing - I meant they weren't as difficult to prepare as it might appear).

I love to read this book just as much as I enjoy cooking from it. I feel transported to the herb gardens of Seattle when I settle down to read it.

I've been gourmet cooking and growing most of my own herbs now for years, some successfully, and others not so. In looking for some aid with what ails my herb garden, sought this one out as possibility.

It provided what I needed and more. What I needed was some specific help with cultivation and amount of each herb for the kitchen. Exactly one of the main portions of this book. The bonus is the exciting recipe collection that composes this award winning cookbook.

Her books have been life changing for thousands and thousands of people. Ever once in a while someone rights a negative review but it is the person not the material that is off base. They haven't allowed Sally's work to work within themselves. Sally gets hundreds of thank you notes from people all over the world thanking her for her work.Sports people other than horse people find her work amazing. If you haven't already read her books hurry and order them. At 94 Sally is actively involved in making a difference. Sally was just given the United States Dressage Federation's highest award for her writing and her riding. Need I say more.

5 out of 5 stars Sally Swift does it again........2006-09-19

I love her first book, and highly recommend both books to my students. This book has the same easy to understand format. Sally breaks down how our bodies function when we are riding. I really like the exercises that she uses on the ground. I frequently use the "monkey position" with my students. It really helps to explain use of the hip joint. I also find the "monkey position" helpful when introducing a student to the sitting trot. I cannot say enough awesome things about this book. I also do not fully agree with the first review. This book really shows a rider how their body affects the horse, regardless of your learning styles. The illustrations and pictures are very clear and easy to understand. They have helped many of my students to really gain perspective on how every little movement, or tense muscle affects the horse in some way. I feel that every rider should have a copy of both Centered Riding, and Centered Riding 2 Further Exploration. I hope that this review is helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Still drives me spare - 'Creative' types will love it........2005-11-11

If you aren't a fan of Sally Swift's methods (analogies and metaphors) and the first book drove you to despair this second one is slightly better. There are some helpful texts and photos but she is still my least favourite writer. I simply find that I cannot learn from her teaching style and her descriptions do nothing to help me to understand what I must DO. Of course, AFTER I have learned something (on my own) I can often relate what I feel to what she describes but because I am unable to transfer her descriptions initially I am unable to LEARN to ride from her books.

You MUST know your learning style before buying Sally Swift - if 'grow like a tree' doesn't help you with your riding, avoid her like the plague. If on the other hand you have the type of brain that responds well to these sorts of descriptions, dancers\actors etc who can understand what their bodies need to do in response to imagery - then buy her books and avoid the others who use more mechanistic descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best.......2003-05-20

Sally Swift proved to be an excellent teacher in her last book, and she maintains the title throughout the second edition. I find the illustrations and analogies to be excellent for my own use as well as teaching others. So many concepts are broken down and compared to every day events and mechanical workings that they are almost impossible to forget. Sally helps you understand the mechanincs of your own body as well as your horse's and helps us understand why our instructors tell us to do the things they do.

                      Book Description

Coq is an interactive proof assistant for the development of mathematical theories and formally certified software. It is based on a theory called the calculus of inductive constructions, a variant of type theory.

This book provides a pragmatic introduction to the development of proofs and certified programs using Coq. With its large collection of examples and exercises it is an invaluable tool for researchers, students, and engineers interested in formal methods and the development of zero-fault software.

                        Book Description

The popularity enjoyed today by the French furniture designer Pierre Paulin traces its roots back to the Pop era, when Paulin incarnated the Pop aesthetic perfectly in his unique and revolutionary chairs. It was during the early 1960s, when Andy Warhol was exhibiting his controversial Pop Art, and Brigitte Bardot was redefining sexual freedom, that Pierre Paulin designed his non-conformist chairs, changing radically the look of our interiors. Innovative and yet steeped in his times, a joyful modernist, he stages the body, and covers his egg-shaped chairs with mushrooms, oraange slices, flower petals, tongues, cough drops, sea shells, waves, half-open lips, and more. Sexy, playful, exuberantm yet comfortable, his furniture is above all supple and lively. This new entry in the Dis Voir design series presents his work with color images as well as critical texts.

In the 1920s racy French postcards were condemned as immoral. Today they offer a charming glimpse of early photography and postcards as a valued art form.

Descended from West African kings and healers, raised in the turbulence of Guinea in the 1960s, Kadiatou Diallo was married off at the age of thirteen and bore her first child when she was sixteen. Twenty-three years later, that child–a gentle, innocent young man named Amadou Diallo–was gunned down without cause on the streets of New York City. Now Kadi Diallo tells the astonishing, inspiring story of her life, her loss, and the defiant strength she has always found within.

An interesting story of a mother, her history, her life, her struggles and success. Being a daughter, a wife, a mother, a provider. I enjoyed the book. I find though that the book was more about her and less about Amadou. SO if your intent is to read about Amadou there is not too much. I recommend it though. GOd Bless her and her family. She is an inspiration to the African (muslim) woman and others too. I feel her pain as I am also a mother.

                                      5 out of 5 stars 41 Shots.......2004-04-20

A lot of folks like the Bruce Springsteen song "41 shots" but have no idea what it is about. It is about Amadou Diallo, a young man from Guinea who was shot that many times (long after he was "down") by NYPD when he went for his wallet to provide identification to them. They say they thought he was going for a weapon.
This book is heartbreaking and heartwarming, written by his mother with sentiments only a mother could feel and only Ms. Diallo could express. She was recently interviewed on Pacifica radio and I was impressed with her articulate and thoughtful responses to the questions asked her after the settlement she had recieved from the City of NY.
Amadou was not a gangbanger or punk. He was a hardworking, thoughtful and intelligent man with a tightly knit family who loved him and wanted him to succeed in the "Land of Oz" like so many others, like my own forefathers who came from Europe. I wonder if this "murder by cop" would have occurred if he were caucasian.

I'm hoping that those 41 shots will again be heard around the world in the voice of his mother. Shame (again) on the NYPD.

MY HEART WILL CROSS THIS OCEAN is Kadiatou Diallo's story. In her memoir, she rejects the label of herself as the bereaved mother of her slain son, Amadou Diallo and defines herself as a woman of courage who triumphs over adversity. She shares her life and history in vibrant, lyrical detail. As I read her
words, I felt like she spoke them to me and I was lulled into a comfortable trance by what felt like her soothing Guinean dialect.

Ms. Diallo shares her humble beginnings as a child in Guinea, Africa and gives a picture of her family and the political climate of that region at the time. By telling her story, she tells Amadou's story. Despite the rich cultural text and vivid detail of her youth and growth into womanhood, I read with
baited breath because I knew eventually the story would arrive at February 3, 1999. The day that her courage and strength would be thoroughly tested.

MY HEART WILL CROSS THIS OCEAN is a mother's story, it is poignant and filled with cultural details. It movingly chronicles the life of Kadiatou Diallo, a woman who should not be pitied, but heralded for her courage and honesty in this portrayal.

                                      4 out of 5 stars A Modern Griot's Story.......2003-08-17

When Ms. Diallo's parents and family where pleased to receive the visit of the griot in their house, and his (the griot's) recounting of Fulah history lifted the hearts of the everyone in the compound and beyond. Little did she realize that, she would be doing same through print. A very interesting tale of personal conflicts of modern African women of being true to tradition, religion and still in step with the modern world. At the same time that you want to give something up you do not want to do that.

5 out of 5 stars The tender truth that everyone should know.......2003-07-24

Anyone who knows the story of Amadou Diallo's fate at the hands of the NYC Police, does not know the story until you read this book. In the days and weeks following Amadou's death, the media frenzy revealed very little about Amadou's life and family short of the presumptive image of an African immigrant struggling to earn a living with little education and few family ties. Nothing could be further from the truth. This beautifully written account of Kadiatou's own story and her relationship to her son Amadou, reveals more of his character than any news report ever did. To understand Amadou, you must understand Kadiatou. Her story, and his, humbles the reader. The words are prose, the images are stunning; it is a visual read. Even if you know very little of the tragedy that occurred in 1999, this is a must read.
