Book Description
Thirty thousand years ago, in the heart of the African continent and in the shadow of the largest freestanding mountain in the world, lived the Ibandi. For countless generations they nurtured their ancient tradition, and met survival’s daily struggle with quiet faith in their gods. But when brutal intruders arrived from the south, a few brave souls dared the ultimate quest–to climb the Great Mountain, seeking answers and a way into the future.
In this breathtaking blend of imagination, anthropology, and sheer storytelling magic, Steven Barnes takes us to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and into the realm of our own ancestors, who lived, hunted, celebrated, and died side by side with roaming herds of wild animals and great golden clouds of migrating butterflies. A people whose skin was the color and smell of the earth itself, the Ibandi formed a hierarchy based on strength of limb and spirit. In this extraordinary novel, we follow the adventures of two of the Ibandi’s chosen ones: T’Cori, an abandoned girl raised by the powerful and mysterious medicine woman Stillshadow, and Frog Hopping, a boy possessing a gift that is also a curse.
Though the live in different encampments, Frog and T’Cori are linked through the revered and powerful Stillshadow, who has sensed in them a destiny apart from others’.
Through the years, and on their separate life paths, T’Cori’s and Frog’s fates entwine as an inevitable disaster approaches from the south–from the very god they worship. For as long as there have been mountain, sky, and savannah, there has been a home for the Ibandi. Now, in the face of an enemy beyond anything spoken of even in legend, they must ask their god face-to-face: Do we remain or do we depart?
Great Sky Woman not only brings to life the world of prehistoric man but also shines a brilliant light on humanity itself. For here is a story of rivalries and alliances, of human fear and desire, of faith and betrayal . . . and, above all, a story of how primitive man, without words or machines, set in motion civilization’s long, winding journey to the present.

Myths or Beliefs or Facts?.......2007-09-17
Excerpt:
"Was it possible the only reward for a lifetime of work and risk was deterioration and disease? The naked eye of death seemed to fix him, the terror that none of his fellows seemed to fear, because unlike him, they believed. And if that was true, then who was really more alive in the mind? He who saw through the tricks and lived in constant fear? Or one who succumbed to the mirage and lived his life in joy? And if there was nothing but the struggle of life, then what good was it all?"
These words slapped me across the face harshly. I can relate to the turmoil of Frog Hopping. When you see things as they really are, rather than living in a world of belief and fantasy, life can be quite interesting. You don't have too many illusions, and facts, not belief, generally rule your existence. However, at the same time, you may feel envious of people who live in a world of illusions and fantasies and myths, because they seem to have joy from believing, than knowing. As they say "ignorance is bliss", and when you are no longer ignorant, the world can be quite painful. Is having knowledge freeing or imprisoning? I think it is both - painful and freeing.
I feel that the story of T'Cori and Frog Hopping nem was a very interesting read. The author has done some serious research to write such a book. The book is well written and takes one's mind to another place and time.
The Ibandi are fictionalized and are the first humans to stand erect. They are most likely the ancestors of us all. The Msk may be the Neanderthals, being partial ape and human, not having evolved to full human status. These half humans posed an enormous threat to the Ibandi. They were bigger and stronger. Eventually the Neanthrals died out.
Places that I never gave a second thought, now they are firmly etched in my memory. Mt. Kilimanjaro now has a permanent place in my head. Mt. Kilimanjaro is situated in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain on earth. Mr. Barnes story has encouraged me to know more about the mountain and the people and/or original inhabitants that live in its shadows. This is the sign of an excellent writer.
I generally don't like to give detail information about a book. I prefer to give the reader an idea of why I like a book. This is a book that I know I will read again. If you want a great story, I would highly recommend Great Sky Woman.
The great mountain.......2007-02-10
Steven Barnes in GREAT SKY WOMAN tells the story of two youngsters of the Ibandi people living below Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is known to the Ibandi as Great Sky. T'Cori, abandoned to wild animals by a father who thinks she is blind, is rescued by a mystic, Stillshadow, who teaches her to be a dream dancer. Frog Hopping, an undersized teenager who is being raised by his Uncle Snake, is attempting to prove his worth as a great hunter. Frog Hopping realizes he also has premonitions that let him know what is about to happen. After a brutal and hairy group attack the Ibandi people, the hunt chiefs who are left and the dream dancers must climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to set things right.
Steven Barnes has spun a wonderful tale of life during prehistoric times in Africa. He delves deeply into the religious beliefs, the customs and cultures of the Ibandi people and what they must do to survive in the harsh region on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The suspense keeps you tense and wondering what is going to happen next. How can even extraordinary teenagers survive the many tribulations that beset them and their people? The story has many twists and turns that confound you before a possible solution is discovered. Barnes is a wonderful writer well worth reading again and again.

Great., Great Novel..........2007-01-04
I have been a fan of Steven Barnes work for the past 4 years. This newest novel of his is wonderful. It reads like a history novel, you can imagine these very events happening so clearly. Yet you can almost forget you are reading a novel set 30,000 years in the past as it contains elements true to this day. T'cori and Frog dared to question the unquestionable. Its what youth has always done and always will. It always frightens the elders who don't take change in their beliefs too lightly. If you decide to pick this up be prepared to expand your mind and think. Think about what might have been and what might actually be.
excellent.......2006-12-09
I am ashamed that this is my first Steven Barnes novel, as I have been meaning to "get into" his work just as I have with that of his wife (T. Due). With that said, this is an excellent novel and I agree with the editorial review. His attention to detail and sense of place and time are outstanding, as is his pacing: the novel covers a good near-20 years yet progresses seamlessly. For those who are interested in both good writing and humanity's ancient history, this is a must for you. I hesitate to compare it to anything, but I'll go ahead anyway and say that it more than on par with "Clan of the Cave Bear," and even more relevant for those of us with African Ancestry (which ultimately is actually everyone).
Great Sky Woman Gives Voice and Power to the Science Fiction Genre and African Americans.......2006-12-03
As always, Barnes has written another phenomenal, detailed piece of fiction that allows African American's to feel like we are truly a part of mainstream literature. When I read Barnes, I feel as if I have a story too--one that is rich with details, hope and beauty. Something that is fiercely lacking in most other literature. The new craze among writers to depict us as one demensional sex-craved vixens and thugs is neither uplifting or representative of what I believe most African Americans want when they go to a book store. We fought too hard for the voices of Langston, Zora, Alice and Toni to be heard to now have them silenced by this new generation of writers that have started "selling themselves" to the highest bidder.
T'Cori (the nameless one) is an orphaned girl raised to be a Dancer. Frog is a young man raised to be a warrior. The two, whose path cross in a way that is unimaginable, allows both T'Cori and Frog to become greater than the selves they started out to be. Both rely on the other's strengths and change their history and the history of their people. We need literature like this. One that allows us to see ourselves as the beginning not the end of what makes this civilization of ours great.
I appreciate writers like Barnes, his wife Ms. Due and the late great Octavia Butler. They allowed us to be a part of the science fiction genre in a way that challenges the status quo and gives credibility to the fact that African American readers want to be challenged and put in the forefront of the literature that is written about us in a way that is classy and multi-layered. Thank you again, Mr. Barnes for another wonderful work of literature. I look forward to the sequel to this book(if rumor proves correct).

pretty bad.......2006-07-04
This is another weak attempt. Mark Millar just can't write. The story is really weak and just sucks. And what is that Punisher story in the back? Is the Punisher gay? What the hell. The Punisher deserves way better. Really reaching on this one. Stay away from this crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a good wolverine collection.......2004-03-16
I found this to be a good Wolverine story. Good art. A lot of fun to read. That is until #186, which is the Punisher story that just seems to be tacked on for no real good reason (oh there is a slight connection--feeble though). And it is drawn like some (bad) Saturday morning cartoon. It's the only weakness in an otherwise good book.
A different Wolverine Story.......2003-05-19
The first time I read this story, it seemed more like The Sopranos than Wolverine. I didn't know what Frank was trying to prove by this until I read a short interview by him, and he grew up near the mafia, so it kinda fit for him. Anyway, after reading it a few times, and looking through it, this is a definative LOGAN story. This isn't Wolverine the superhero, alas, you don't even see him in uniform. But it shows you what he's capable of when not dealing with supervillians, and really sets him in the world, or at least the world of organized crime. Sean Chen's artwork as usual is outstanding, and Edgar Tadeo's inks bring it a grittier feel, along with the duller colors. If you like superheros in uniform fighting for a noble cause, then I would not recomend this book. This is about a man called Logan who takes on a mafia war by force, and does what he does best. Not all that in depth, but he does kick a lot of a**.
Once you realize that's what the intention of this book was, then you appreciate it a little more. And it wraps up nicely, with an ending more appropriate than most.

Tarl Cabot meets Nanook of the North.......2001-05-19
This is Volume 12 of the Gor series. The first six volumes were action-adventure stories with increasing amounts of bondage material present but the adventure aspects dominated. Volumes 7 and 11 were written from the perspective of slave girls so it's not surprising that the bondage aspect took center stage in those books. Volumes 8, 9, 10, and the present volume are somewhere in between, maybe 50/50 bondage and action-adventure. This trend is a good thing if you are interested in bd/sm but not for the rest of us. Several things appeal to me about this series. First of all, the incredible detail in which Gor is depicted. There is no other world in all of fantastic literature that is so fully realized. Secondly, John Norman is a master at creating engaging characters (even though I don't always approve of the activities that they are engaged in!). Thirdly, the man knows how to tell a story. Sure, the plot twists are frequently predictable but he keeps me turning those pages anyway. Also, he has created two truly alien races, the Priest-Kings and the Kurii, and made them believable. I even like his style. Is it clunky? Yes. Is it ungrammatical? Yes. Does he keep repeating stock phrases? Yes. But somehow it all seems to work. If you don't like his style, it's bad writing. If you do, it's "a distinctive auctorial voice"! In this book Tarl Cabot attempts to locate and destroy the arctic beachhead of the Kurii, the staging area for a full-fledged invasion of Gor. Along the way he encounters Imnak of the red hunters (who are based on the Innuit culture of Earth) and enslaves six (!) girls. (On Gor "girl" means any attractive female regardless of age.) One touch and they are putty in the hands of the master. Male power fantasies, anyone? Two things make this volume stand out in my mind: One, for the first time since Volume 4 (Nomads of Gor) humor returns to the series. Several scenes are quite funny and the courtship of Poalu had me laughing out loud. Two, we learn more about the natural history of the Kurii, a race which is highly intelligent and yet also ferocious. Norman even indicates how their savage nature relates to their life cycle with its 4 sexes (or 3 depending on how you count!). This is a good book but would have been better with more action and less repetitive discussion of Gorean philosophy.
Tarl Cabot.......2000-08-09
John Norman strikes again with the Beasts of Gor. The twelfth book in the series. Tarl Cabot's exploits take him to the far north of the planet Gor. An excellently written book. John Norman explores how a culture, similar to our Eskimos, fits in to the fantasy world of Gor. He continues his erotic venture into the world of domination/submission.
Tarl Cabot ventures to the North trying to stop the beginnning of a potential invasion of the Kurii. The on-going battle between the Priest-Kings of Gor and thier arch-nemisis the Kurii, draws Tarl once again into the roll of Hero. An excellent mix of humor, action, the truth of human-nature and fantasy rivaling that of John Carter of Mars.
Customer Reviews:
Partnering with the enemy.......2006-06-07
One of the better Gor books finds Tarl forming a friendship with one of the Kurii - the alien species determined to conquer Gor. I enjoyed the subtleties of the relationship with Zarendargar, and compared them to those that Tarl formed with humans. The settling is analgous to an Inuit environment.
The book is a bit too wordy at times, but features enough action to "save" it.

Book Description
Jack Bishop's commitment to simplicity and his talent for fine-tuning recipes so they work perfectly in real time make his books favorites among vegetarians and occasional vegetarians alike. As a busy husband, father of two young children, cookbook author, magazine and book editor, and head cook for his family, Bishop demands a lot from the meals that make it into his repertoire. They must be convenient dishes that he can prepare at the end of a day in an hour or less with readily available ingredients. They must satisfy his and his wife's discriminating palates. And last, but emphatically not least, they have to pass muster with his five- and nine-year-old daughters. In A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen, Bishop guides you through the seasons with 248 of his favorite everyday recipes, which deliciously embody his philosophy of "shop locally, cook globally, and keep things easy." Cooking with seasonal produce, he says, is the best way to bring a welcome variety to the table. In spring, dinner might be Soft Tacos with Garlicky Greens or Stir-Fried Rice Noodles with Asparagus and Eggs, perhaps with a side of Sugar-Snap Peas with Fried Ginger. Summer brings Savory Corn Griddle Cakes or Fresh Tomato Pizza with Avocado. For fall, Root Vegetable Tarts with Rosemary or Orecchiette with Spicy Broccoli is on the menu. And in winter, when farmers' markets are a distant memory in most parts of the country, there are dozens of flavorful choices, including Pan-Glazed Tofu with Thai Red Curry Sauce, Caribbean Black Beans with Sauted Plantains, and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Mushrooms. In concise sidebars that accompany each recipe, Bishop shares tips gleaned from his ten years' experience at Cook's Illustrated, covering everything from choosing a good vegetable broth to picking the best potatoes for mashing to mastering the secrets of successful stir-frying.

Essential for all cooks, vegetarian or omnivorous!!!!!!.......2007-04-23
Outstanding recipes that are very approachable, without compromising complexity or complementarity of flavours. Will purchase every book by Jack Bishop. Seasonal recommendations/recipes are great for the environmentally-conscious who wants to purchase seasonal and regional produce (which also happen to have the best flavours) that do not require cross-country shipment!!! The book is a necessity for all cooks!
Great, even for Non-Vegetarians.......2007-02-25
I am not a vegetarian, although I try to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and like the idea of reducing saturated fat (meat) in our diets. This book is written in the characteristic Cook's Illustrated style of giving information along with measurements and cooking times. The recipes here are delicious, as well as accessible to someone who doesn't mind a small cooking challenge. I especially enjoyed some of the salads in this book, and his recommendations on which of the recipes his young children enjoyed.
incredible way to use your farm market finds.......2007-02-22
This is one of the cookbooks I pull out every few days, and have no hesitation in cooking from it
even for the first time for guests -- Ingredient lists are simple, so you will have an idea of the tastes to expect from just reading the recipes. And yes, that means you use top quality fresh ingredients as another reviewer mentioned because there are no rich sauces etc usually to hide mediocre produce. Its great everyday healthy fare, that you don't mind repeating, and truly kid pleasing as well.
Because its arranged seasonally, I usually realize that I've picked up some ingredient which stars in a nearby recipe that week at the farm market and thats a great way to combine menus when we have extra folks at the table and also to please picky eaters who may not like a particular flavor...
And his salads have such lovely unique flavors, everyone at the table is asking for seconds and recipes to take home.
I also love his menu combinations listed at the beginning which are a fool-proof way to combine for entertaining friends. I find that I turn to his cookbooks the most because the base ingredients like olive oil are heart friendly. I used to love Mollie Katzen and then Deborah Madison, but while I still turn to Deborah Madison for the truly wow cooking occasions, I stick to this for everyday because of the light, family friendly approach and the fact that you can usually put a meal on the table in a couple of hours.
Yummy but hard to find.......2007-01-04
I really like everything that I have cooked from this cookbook. But, for some of the recipes, the ingredients are difficult to find (for example, zucchini blossoms) The ones I can find are the ingredients to are delicious and not difficult to make.
Good, but not quite as good as previous reviews suggest .......2006-11-10
This covers the kind of basic veggie cooking many people enjoy. I can see that the 'family' aspects (cooking with wife and two kids) is a good enough reason to buy such a varied collection of recipes if you are cooking for a family of 4. But...don't try the tofu recipes if you have tried Deborah Madison's - Bishop's are lacklustre and will leave you dissappointed. He enthuses about tofu as an ingredient, then gives the most flavourless recipe imaginable! Try Madison's approach of cooking tofu with Asian ingredients and you will see it shine. And as for the quinoa with black sesame seeds in the basics section - it was an unappetising shade of grey. Such a shame. I suspect that his Italian book will be better.

Customer Reviews:
at last--clear answers for riders.......2006-09-25
I want to recommend this book from my personal experience...I find that it explains why we get so little results from all those endlessly-repeated (often shouted) directions from riding instructors. No amount of straining, sweating, or praying on our part will make "heels down!" work until we understand how body alignment and balance come about and how they influence everything in us and in the horses we ride. This book SHOWS you how it all works--clear, scientific and above all fun reading. And, fun experimenting. Anyone who has carried a baby in a backpack knows how miserable and difficult it is when baby shifts the "load" trying to look over your shoulder or hang out to stare at the ground. That's how our horses feel if we aren't comfortable, secure and aware of what is happening in our own body and that of the horse under us. Does the book work? Each improvement in my riding was instantly reflected--and I mean INSTANTLY--in my horse's willingness and athletic ability. Suddenly he could do things he couldn't seem to manage before. (oh, dang, it was ME!) Try it! You'll love it.
Simplify Your Riding.......2006-05-26
The Elusive Obvious makes its way to riding. Using the small movements found in The Feldenkrais Method, Wendy has you find that subtle neutral where balance reigns and the sending of soft messages through your pelvis to your horse are found. Frustration turns to progress, progress turns to joy, joy turns to harmony.
My horses love this book - yours will too.......2006-04-07
Every time I go back and reread and review a part of this book and then take that information out onto the backs of my horses I swear they sigh a big sigh of relief! If my smartest gelding had his way, (yes, he is an Arabian) he would pick which chapters he would like me to work more on and then keep the book out in the arena until I get it right. Your horse wants you to be a better rider and this book doesn't just tell you how, it shows you how. If you are at all interested in an eloquent way of learning to communicate to your horse through riding use this book. Your horse will love it.
Ok book.......2006-03-26
I didn't get much out of this book and I sent it back to amazon. I ended up getting another book that I found more helpful.
a must have.......2006-03-10
Great addition to lessons. Easy to understand and apply. For anyone who wants to improve their riding skills.......

A World of Quilts: 10 Projects Using Ethnic Fabrics.......2007-01-12
Ifound the patterns very easy to understand and the directions easy to follow. I like to use all different kinds of fabrics. I will definitely recommend the book to my friends and tell them where I purchased the book. I thought I might like to try some of the patterns in oriential fabrics.
Not what I had hoped for.......2006-03-04
I was looking for a book to help me make Hispanic themed quilts. This book focused on African and some Asian fabrics. While the book shows some examples of these types of fabrics, it didn't really give me a great idea of the types of piecing / patchwork used in typical African or Asian quilts either. So, I don't think this book would be very helpful even if I wanted to make an African quilt.
I would return this book if I could, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to others.
How to contrast or use these unusual colors and textures.......2003-10-14
Beth Ann Williams' A World Of Quilts outlines ten projects using ethnic quilt patterns and exotic fabrics from Africa to Indonesia. Easy designs show beginners how to contrast or use these unusual colors and textures, while the lists of fabric resources at the back is quite useful for online location of exotics.
Beautiful quilts.......2003-09-10
Beth has included such beautiful quilts in this book. They aren't too complicated for beginners and yet provide interesting arrangements for experienced quilters as well. I just finished taking her class for one of the quilts in the book, "Underwater Grotto". The finished products of all the students were stunning. I also saw several of the quilts featured in the book on display in the store. They look even more amazing than pictures captured in the book.

American artist Keith Haring developed a unique visual language of elaborately entwined patterns and symbols that has come to epitomize the energy and popular culture of New York in the 1980s. Usually characterized by its thick black outlines, Haring's graphic, graffiti-like style draws from realms as diverse as cartoon and calligraphy. His lexicon of popular icons includes everything from babies to pyramids, flying saucers to TV screens, hearts and crosses to robots. Yet what emerges from Haring's colorful and upbeat images is often an expression of serious and poignantly expressed concerns: racial conflict, homophobia, and AIDS (of which Haring died in 1990 at the age of 32). This pocket-sized booklet of 18 detachable postcards includes an eye-catching array of humorous, colorful images that are representative of his entire body of work. --A.C. Smith

Book Description
Today many children dream of playing professional baseball. Perhaps you are one of them. If you have good athletic skills and you work hard, your dream may be realized. But this wasn't always true for athletes in the first part of this century. More was required. A player had to be white. Black players--no matter how well they could hit, catch, or throw--were not signed up by the major leagues.
One brave black player named Jackie Robinson worked to change the "rules," so that all races could have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams on the baseball diamond--or anywhere. This is Jackie Robinson's story.

The First African American.......2004-10-21
Jackie Robinson, Bravest Man In Baseball is a biography about how he became the first African-American to play in the MLB. It starts out in Jackie's childhood in Georgia. When he was a kid he was good at all different kinds of sports such as basketball and track. When he played sports he always picked the little kids who weren't as great as everyone else so he could help them improve. Every kid on the block wanted to play on his team.
I think Margaret Davidson's message was you can do what ever you set your mind to. Meaning if you want to be the first woman in the MLB you can. You just have to be ready for what's in store for you just like Jackie.
I liked this book a lot because baseball is my favorite hobby. I also like to read about some of my favorite baseball players. I loved this so much because I can relate to a lot of this book. And I got to learn all about the great Jackie Robinson.
Jackie Robinson Review ..........2002-05-15
The Story of Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball is about the struggles of one black man who made a big difference. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college but was not let into the Major Leagues because his skin was black. Robinson played on the Brooklyn Dodgers in the "Noble Experiment" which was meant Jackie being the first black on a white team. His team looked down on him because of the color of his skin. When the fans yelled slurs at him and other teams yelled at him it overwhelmed the Dodgers. They finally stood up for Robinson. I recommend this wonderful book, Jackie Robinson: Bravest Man in Baseball because it has a lot of action and emotion.

Jackie Robinson was a great athlete in college and wanted to go to the Major's but they wouldn't let him because he was black. The general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey took a chance on Jackie. Rickey said would let him play if he didn't fight back over racial slurs and attacks. The Story of Jackie Robinson, Bravest Man in Baseball is about Robinsonýs struggles in life and in baseball. Robinson was great at all sports but he couldnýt play in the Majors after college because he was black. Four years later in 1945 Jackie Robinson was the first black player to play in the Major League because of a man named Branch Rickey.
