Customer Reviews:
best Magic: the gathering book I've read.......2005-05-13
This book is the first and best Magic book I ever read. The interesting storyline is extremely original, The characters are very detailed and have unique personalities, and, above all, the mood isn't so dark and forboding (despite the picture on the cover). If you already play the game and you like to use blue(island) or white(plains), you have to read this book because the spells used and the "good guys" resemble these cards. For those of you who don't play the game and just want a good fantasy novel to read, you also have to read this book. There are a lot of interesting combat spells used. Unfortunately, if you are looking for backround on the cards, this ain't gonna getcha anywhere
this book kicks A$$.......2004-03-17
this book is one of the best books i have ever read. This book is the only book i have ever read but still the best. I have played the card game and the video gmae and i think that this was one of hte best games ever created. i deffinitly recomend this book to anybody.
Book Description
Bertram Phillips's M.I.N.D. Machine throws him back to southern California's Jurassic period, and this time it also throws real dinosaurs forward into the halls of Wetherford Junior High! Bertram's only chance of setting things right again is to accept the help of J.D. "Judgment Day" Harms, the biggest bully in the eighth grade and the second-smartest student after Bertram. But J.D.'s own plans aren't pretty, and they may change the future forever.
Customer Reviews:
A series that's light-years better than it looks.......2005-05-24
I picked up the first book in the _Dinoverse_ sextet (there's six of them) in a discount book store, as it was cheap, the cover art was horrendous, and the premise seemed ridiculous. I was expecting, for fifty cents, to enjoy making fun of it. Go figure, I now own the entire series as it's actually quite good. There are three story arcs which each cover two books. For my money, the first two books are the best. The second story arc is okay, but repetitive (and a little far-fetched at times). The final two books are as good a resolution as any, I guess, but just nuts in parts (think surfing dinosaurs, telepathic interdimensional aliens, and -argh- a food fight scene). Still, overall, this series is great fun and has a great respect for animals and nature.
Enter the Dinoverse!.......2000-10-02
I began reading the Dinoverse series this summer as part of a children's literature course at college. I didn't think they would hold my attention, being juvenile literature...boy was I wrong! The course ended two months ago, but when I found this book, the fifth in the series, I had to read it! My hat is off to author Scott Ciencin, whose work reminds me of my own childhood fantasies of dinosaurs brought to life. I work in a bookstore, and often recommend these titles to parents, looking for books that their sons might enjoy. These are great books for boys, jam-packed with adventure and imagination. I highly recommend the entire series! Can't wait to read the next book when it comes out in November!
Dinoverse 5.......2000-09-28
This is an execellent read! If you've ever thought about what it would be like to be a dinosaur, then this series is for you. If you are already familliar with Dinoverse, then expect another romp through time with Bertram and some new faces. Each chapter ends in a cliffhanger, and the end of the book will leave you wanting to get your "claws" on the next. I recommend this to everyone, adults and children alike!

Customer Reviews:
Good for you and fun too.......2007-07-28
These are so fun to make! There are a few ingrediants used in some of these you might not have laying around the house but they can easily be exchanged with something else.
Overall a great bunch of good for you smoothies
Delicious!.......2006-03-21
I highly recommend this book. I have tried most of the recipes so far and all are delicous, especially the chocolate raspberry smoothie and Eric's caramel-vanilla smoothie. I had to order some of the ingrediants on the internet, but I live in a very rural area, so others may find them more readily available.
Disappointed in the blender isle.......2006-02-27
I purchased Dana Carpender's book 500 Low-Carb Recipes and was disappointed in the recipes and the ingredients. This book was no different. After reading the carb counts on her smoothies recipes as well as the ingredients she call for, they are not what I would consider low-carb.
Good recipes.......2006-02-13
I love to have a smoothie for breakfast. I'm not a breakfast eater in general and I'm very tired of eggs, so I found this book to be very useful. I do replace most of the crystal lite drink mixes with kool-aid powder or extracts to minimize the amount of aspartame consumed, but they still taste great. This is not a book for people just starting out on a low carb diet, but its great for those who are steadily losing or who are maintaining their weight. Dana never disappoints us.
Dana does it again!.......2005-04-23
My boys and I have had a smoothie every morning for breakfast for the past two weeks--we're hooked! I'm a type 1 diabetic, and find that a smoothie like this works perfectly for a great meal replacement. They keep me satisfied until the next meal, and most importantly, they really taste great. The carb counts are accurate and my blood sugar remains stable after having one. My kids aren't on a restricted carb diet, but they love the taste too! If you're already a low-carb dieter, you'll most likely have all the ingredients in your pantry. Enjoy!
Book Description
For the millions of girls--and the women they grow into--who are mad about horses, who live to ride, who spend more time in stables than stores, who know the difference between a hock and the fetlock, comes a sweet, charming, wise, obsessive celebration of the bond between woman and horse. Written and illustrated by Bonnie Timmons, the award-winning artist whose signature squiggly style was seen every week on NBC's hit show Caroline in the City and is featured in places ranging from The New York Times to Fortune 500 advertising campaigns, Hold Your Horses is 144 full-color pages of irresistible pleasure and unexpected horse sense.
It starts with First Love, moving quickly to Lessons, including the gallop: a gait so fast your worries can't keep up, and jumping: just throw your heart over first, and, of course, falling-otherwise known as an unscheduled dismount. There are tips on Buying One of These Things, plus the truth about Care and Feeding. (The trick here is knowing how much your horse weighs. Easy, really: 1. Weigh yourself. 2. Weigh yourself holding the horse. 3. Subtract 1 from 2.) And Horsekeeping Truths: A horse knows what you know. He also knows what you don't know. Written out of a lifelong love, Hold Your Horses gets to the heart of the passion that horses inspire. Every horsewoman will see herself in its pages.
Customer Reviews:
Hold Your Horses.......2007-08-06
Anyone that deals with horses on a daily basis will enjoy this little book of quips. I don't think I read one thing in it that is not true. However, it will take a good reader only 30-45 min to read. I have passed it to all my horse friends and all have enjoyed it equally.
More of a Kid's Book.......2007-01-31
It is a fun read but more geared to children.
More for the 12 and younger age group.......2007-01-11
I didn't realize it was like a cartoon type book. I was very disappointed in it. Would recommened it for the younger horse lovers in your family who enjoy reading cartoons but who can learn something from it also.
Fun Story!.......2007-01-10
I bought this book for my horse-crazy 12-year old niece. It is a very cute book and delivers on its promises. She was tickled to receive it and will no doubt get hours of enjoyment out of it.

Customer Reviews:
Better than the First.......2002-07-28
Simply better than the first... and it's on my bookshelf now.
Stunning Photographic Work in Advertising.......2001-12-09
I got this book from a local bookstore. Only one was available and the cover was not in a very good condition. But I find the content stunning... the combination of photographs and no faults with the manipulations/modifications done could have easily fooled many in earlier days. Today we know such mastery is possible powerful computer software.
This book eye candy to me.
Eyecatching Effects and Stunning Ideas.......2001-12-01
Sometimes we come across advertisements (eg. posters) that catch our attention and make us wonder---"How REAL!!" and amaze us. This book is filled with wonderful pictures, carefully designed, composited, etc. with consideration of details such as shadows to make things realistic. Everything in the pictures blends well with other elements in the pictures. With the power of today's photo editing software, some of these may not be difficult to produce but for the rest, they seem like wonders to me. Imagination and skills are essential.
If you are in advertising and designing, it would be a great challenge to yourself to try to produce similar effects in the book. Or if you are just looking for a book that shows you great pictures in advertising, you will find this book to be an eye-candy. However, this book does not teach you how to produce the effects; which, I think is not the aim of the book.
I am happy to have a copy of this book.
Collection of Good Examples of Digital Image Manipulation.......2001-06-14
This book is chocked of photographic pictures that are skillfully modififed to blend seamlessly. Some of these may be done by using plug-ins, but others require more effort, skill and thought. For example, you cannot just mask an object and paste it on another photo; need to consider shadow, lighting, etc. and I think the pictures here involved such considerations. Great work. When I look at the pictures, I think, "That's great..." and a great challenge to me to produce similar results.
I am also intending to get "Paintbox No. 2" !!
Quantel Paintbox Artistry.......2000-01-28
Paintbox No.1 shows the power of image manipulation. With a simple digital pen these artists blend together images that will amaze your eyes. Pages upon pages of eyecandy!
Book Description
The first black woman to escape from slavery in the British colonies and publish a record of her experiences, Prince vividly recalls her life in the West Indies, her rebellion against physical and psychological degradation, and her 1828 escape in England. A straightforward, often poetic account of a struggle for freedom.
Book Description
Mary Prince was the first black British woman to escape from slavery and publish a record of her experiences. In this unique document, Mary Prince vividly recalls her life as a slave in Bermuda, Turks Island, and Antigua, her rebellion against physical and psychological degradation, and her eventual escape to London in 1828.
First published in London and Edinburgh in 1831, and well into its third edition that year, The History of Mary Prince inflamed public opinion and created political havoc. Never before had the sufferings and indignities of enslavement been seen through the eyes of a woman--a woman struggling for freedom in the face of great odds.
Moira Ferguson's edition of the book added an introduction, annotations, and appendices. The book has found popularity both in the classroom and with the general public. Recently, an adaptation of the memoirs of Mary Prince appeared as one segment of "A Skirt Through History," a six-part feature film series produced by the BBC. Mary Prince's story has also been the centerpiece of BBC radio broadcasts.
In this revised and expanded edition of The History of Mary Prince, Ferguson has added new material, based on her extensive research in Bermuda and London. The book includes new details of Mary Prince's experiences as a freewoman in England, the transcripts of several libel cases brought against her, and the reactions of British society, as seen in prominent periodicals of the day, against the original publication of The History of Mary Prince. This new material brings greater depth and detail and serves to more fully illustrate and contextualize the life of this remarkable woman.
Moira Ferguson is James E. Ryan Professor of English and Women's Literature, University of Nebraska.
Customer Reviews:
An important document of the slave experience.......2001-01-06
Born in Bermuda in the late 18th century, Mary Prince was a Black woman who survived enslavement in the colonial world of the Caribbean. She orally told her story to a third party, who transcribed it. First published in England in 1831, "The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave" is one of the most important narratives of the slave experience in the Americas.
This book describes in detail the reality of the slave experience: the dehumanization of Black people, the moral degradation of their masters, and the ever-present violence. Prince's story is also an important early defense of the humanity of people of African descent. She notes that slave masters "think that black people are like cattle, without natural affection. But my heart tells me it is far otherwise."
Prince tells of her labor in the salt ponds of Turk's Island, her conflict with a hired mulatto woman, her spiritual life in the Moravian Church, and many other topics. Ultimately, she celebrates the desire and hope for freedom: "All slaves want to be free."
"The History of Mary Prince" does not quite attain the level of literary craftsmanship and psychological complexity as do some other classic slave narratives (I am thinking in particular of those of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs). But it is still a powerful, authoritative, and important human testament. Mary Prince declares, "I have been a slave--I have felt what a slave feels, and I know what a slave knows." We of later centuries need to hear her words.
A Woman's Voice and the Experience of Slavery.......2000-09-25
First published in 1831, "The History of Mary Prince" is an extraordinary cultural document. It is the first published account of a female British ex-slave. Mary Prince, a slave in the West Indies in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, tells the story of her life in an effort to awaken sympathy for the abolitionist movement in England.
Mary particularly emphasizes instances of the arbitrary punishments meted out by her various masters. She repeatedly questions how the British, a civilized nation, could permit its colonists to treat its colonial work force like brute beasts. Mary elicits our attention and respect in the ways she manages to resist the brutality of her masters, both physically and vocally. She often shows herself speaking out against cruelty regardless of social taboos, accepted colonial norms of unquestioning obedience, and the image of the "benevolent" slave owner.
Mary's narrative is also remarkable for her characterization as the "self-made heroine." Mary tells us extensively about her attempts to save enough money to purchase her freedom, and to engage, convert, and marry the man of her choice. As the editor of this edition points out, as Mary begins to learn the value of her labor, she more easily manipulates her owners into realizing their own powerlessness over her. A sort of Wollstonecraftian feminist hero, Mary Prince bases her self-definition on her ability to be financially, as well as physically independent, and to improve herself through education and religion.
One limitation of "The History of Mary Prince" is the fact that it was only dictated by Prince. It was transcribed and published by British abolitionists, who may have suggested the emphasis on brutality and deemphasis on specifically sexual violence. It is impossible to know the extent of the editing process, which was out of Prince's hands. Nonetheless, this edition, edited by Moira Ferguson, contains many relevant historical documents which provide a rich context for Prince's narrative.

Book Description
Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Paule Marshall, and Mary Prince represent the best of African American women writers who draw on the tortuous legacy of their people as a source for their art, revealing and defining themselves as they create compelling narratives that illuminate their roots, their heritage, and their unique culture. The themes that suffuse their writing are family, community, strong women, cultural memory, oral history, and slavery. By analyzing the works of these four remarkable writers, the study shows how today's black woman can take control of her destiny by coming to grips with an obscured and distorted past. These original essays articulate the way in which historical awareness, sensitivity to language, and an understanding of stereotypes can empower enduring artistic visions in a world that is largely indifferent to marginal voices.

Book Description
Through their open defiance, women like Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth had a significant impact on the institution of slavery. But what of the millions of other women who did not commit public or even private acts of resistance? Are their stories worthy of our attention? While some scholars imply that only the struggle for freedom was legitimate, Jenny Sharpe complicates the linear narrative-from slavery to freedom and literacy-that emerged from the privileging of autobiographical accounts like that of Frederick Douglass. She challenges a paradigm that equates agency with resistance and self-determination, and introduces new ways to examine negotiations for power within the constraints of slavery.
In Ghosts of Slavery, Sharpe introduces a wider range of everyday practices by examining the lives of three distinctive Caribbean women: a maroon leader, a mulatto concubine, and a fugitive slave. Through them she explains how the diasporic experience of slavery enabled black women to claim an authority that they didn't possess in Africa; how concubines empowered themselves through their mimicry of white women; and how less-privileged slave women manipulated situations that they were powerless to change. Finding the highly mediated portrayal of slave women in the historical records limited and sometimes misleading, Sharpe turns to unconventional sources for investigating these women's lives. In this fascinating and historically rich account, she calls for new strategies of reading that question traditional narratives of history, and she finds alternative ways to integrate oral storytelling, slave songs, travel writing, court documents, proslavery literature, and contemporary literature into black history.
Ultimately, this layered approach not only produces a more complex picture of the slave women's agency than conventional readings, it encourages a more nuanced understanding of the roles of slaves in the history of slavery.
Jenny Sharpe is professor of English and comparative literature at the University of California, Los Angeles, and author of Allegories of Empire: The Figure of Woman in the Colonial Text (Minnesota, 1993).
