Book Description

Kevin McIlvoy's Hyssop is a remarkable novel filled with kindness, truth, and magic--a story that celebrates friendship and love while exploring the complexities of a simple faith that enriches materially impoverished lives. It is a gorgeous patchwork of memory lovingly sewn together by Red Greetaltruistic petty thief and guileless grifter-who has spent many days of his eighty-seven years behind bars in Las Almas, New Mexico. Twice married-the second time, while in jail, to his lifelong love Recita Holguin-Red has sampled pleasures available only to those capable of embracing life and its temptations without shame or fear. But his sins have been as memorable as his adventures-transgressions he shares freely with Bishop Francisco Velasco, Red's lifelong best friend and confessor, and his one-time rival for the affections of his first wife, Cecilia. In telling how he has loved and been loved, in confessing how he has sinned and inspired others to sin, Red Greet seeks hyssop, the substance that might wash his soul clean.

5 out of 5 stars the simplicity of beauty.......2000-10-18

i have heard kevin mcilvoy read from the title chapter of this book, and his extraordinary sense of voice and passion are what drove me to read the entire book. i have been told that he did a lot of work and interviews to put together this amazing book. it paid off. it truly did.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, gritty, joyful.......2000-04-13

This novel inspires hunger. For life, for love, for NOW. Red Greet, an honest thief, forces us to confront the perfect imperfections of our lives, and to learn to cherish them. He is a great tasty chunk of character made chunkier through his storytelling - jewels spill from his chapped lips on every page. The grace of aging is so tenderly woven through the story. The shifting qualities of love and lust and beauty that gently evolve in these pages feels visceral, unlike the plastic veneer of the media culture. This is a story of paradox, of becoming, acceptance, and mostly self-love. It is a beautiful, compelling, and sweetly funny novel.

5 out of 5 stars Learned from Steinbeck and then outdid the master........1999-07-13

Kevin McIlvoy must have studied at John Steinbeck's feet and then surpassed his teacher. The common man and his humanity made glorious. My heart grew.

5 out of 5 stars A rare lyrical delicacy and deep insight.......1999-03-01

McIlvoy possesses a deep understanding of his character's intimate lives and of those fleeting moments of grace and flashes of mutual understanding which ultimately unite us all. This is a writer to watch, his book, a gem to be treasured.

5 out of 5 stars A title for the ages!!!.......1999-02-18

HYSSOP is for the mestizo in all of us. A miracle in words. Stories fly from the narrator's mouth like venom and provide a sweet death. Don't let this title be forgotten. Its espiritu will invade your skin...

Authoritative, objective and in tune with the subjects that matter to students and researchers, Gale presents four volumes of current, unbiased information on alternative and complementary medical practices. Covering all aspects of the subject --Therapies, Conditions/Diseases, Herbs/Plants and People -- the Encyclopedia identifies 150 types of alternative medicine being practiced today, including reflexology, acupressure, acupuncture, chelation therapy, kinesiology, yoga, chiropractic, Feldenkrais, polarity therapy, detoxification, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, biofeedback, Ayurveda and osteopathy. For the practitioner or interested patient, there are current training requirements, listings of organizations, as well as descriptions of treatments.

Information on recommended therapies for specific disorders and diseases, medicinal uses for plants and herbs are balanced by conclusions of studies on efficacy and analysis of current levels of acceptance by traditional scientists and doctors. Biographies of pioneers in the field -- including Deepak Chopra, Edward Bach and David Palmer --appear as sidebars through the text. Included are 39 sidebars. Each volume contains a color photo insert containing images of herbs. There are more than 275 disease/condition entries, 300 herb/remedy entries, and 150 therapies.

                    Book Description

An action-packed allegory that captures our growth from non-believers to mature Christians.

Through the mysterious Bloodstone, which symbolizes God’s great love for mankind, three children are whisked into strange and wondrous worlds. Soon they are visiting places like the Sea of Mirrors where they are nearly crushed by the weight of their sins, or the Menagerie whose prisoners are doomed to live in pure selfishness, or Biiq where one doubting child is allowed to experience the same deep and unfathomable love that Jesus Christ has for us.

With the help of intriguing characters like Aristophenix—the world’s worst poet, Listro Q—a tall, purple dude with dyslectic speech, and Weaver —who weaves God’s plans into each of our Life Tapestries, the children learn the powers and secrets of living as citizens in the Kingdom of God.

The Bloodstone Chronicle is a book based on the Bible. The kids meet three friends in Fayrah, Aristophenix, the world's worst poet, Lister Q, A purple dude with dyslexic speech, and Samson, part dragonfly part ladybug. Together these six friends take a wild adventure.
I thought the book was really good. I would recommend the book for both guys and girls over the age of 8. Though the book is a little long, the comprehension level is not hard. Every page has so much action on it. I definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Read aloud and think deep!.......2003-08-12

This book is a moving one so be ready to think! I love finding books that I can read to my kids and have a deeper meaning. THis book does that and even more.
When you read this you feel like you are seeing a movie flash in front of your imagination. Bill Myers does a great job of just giving us enough adjectuves to form our own images and make it our own.
The message is God and his love but done in a way that makes your heart open to see and understand the complicated mind set of our Savior. The author takes the complex thoughts and turns them into a modern day parable full of characters we can all somehow relate to.
Want a rich book that the whole fmaily can get something from? Want a read a-loud that will keep you turning pages as fast as you can say the words on it?
Want a bedtime story that will have oyur kids thinking deeper thoughts?
Then I highly recommend The Bloodstone Chronicles to you!

Which came first: the chicken or the Eglise-Clinet? Well, if you're a disciple of author Sid Goldstein--and you will be--you've had that Bordeaux decanted long before you even thought of shopping for those Cacciatore ingredients. And "wine-first" cooking is precisely what Goldstein--vice president and director of marketing communications at Mendocino, California's Fetzer Vineyards--so ably demonstrates in The Wine Lover's Cookbook, soon to become indispensable to anyone who has ever chosen the wine first and the groceries second. In 100 easy-to-follow-yet-impressive-as-heck recipes, Goldstein shows you how to exquisitely match the tastes and textures of wine varietals to food. In fact, if you want to find specific recipes, you have to look in the back index; the chapters themselves are divided into grape types! Serving a Chardonnay? Chapter 7's Spinach Fettuccine with Sea Bass and Lemongrass-Coconut Cream Sauce is seamless. Pinot Noir? Coffee-and-Spice-Rubbed Lamb with Coffee-Vanilla Sauce shouldn't work; and yet lamb marinated for hours in mint, pepper, red wine, freshly ground coffee beans, and rosemary, then grilled and sauced with a combination of honey, brewed coffee, shallots and vanilla bean--any one of which elements should have bullied a Russian River Pinot--provides a tightly woven hammock on which the wine can luxuriate.

Chapters discuss the grape variety and list "Base Ingredients"--the main medium of the dish (Game Hen and Rabbit are a couple for Sangiovese)--as well as "Bridge Ingredients"--those connectors of food and wine (Plums, Fennel, and Green Peppercorns among those for Syrah). This "wine-first" regimen is not without pitfalls: it's fine to decide that tonight is Riesling or Pinot night, but if you can't find radicchio or pomegranate, you might as well skip a few pages. Yet if you've ever been made to feel immoral by cookbooks that give you the recipe first, then deign to suggest a "perfect" wine pairing beyond your means, let Father Sid absolve you of all your Zins (or Merlots or Viogniers). After all, the Bible talks of wine 650 times; food barely rates a mention. Perhaps if they'd had The Wine Lover's Cookbook in the Garden of Eden, Adam wouldn't have wasted all that time trying to pair ribs and an apple with a Sauvignon Blanc. --Tony Mason

This book has interesting recipes, but it's more than a cookbook. It offers information on popular wine varietals and explains why certain foods taste good with certain wines. I find and bookmark most of my recipes on the Internet. This is the one cookbook I own.

A friend's all-time favorite cookbook, so I decided to buy it. The recipes are consistantly flavorful. The wine facts and suggestions are interesting and helpful for each recipe. Easy to read and use; I'm enjoying this book.

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a nice addition to any cookbook library.

The book is subdivided as follows:
                          1. A Road Map to Great Food and Wine Pairing

If you love wine and good food this is a nice book to add to your library. As a lover of Italian food and wine I would have liked a little more emphasis on the cooking and wines of my beloved Italia. But, even with that deduction this is still a nice book to own.

For each wine the author spells out the following information:
                          1. Typical aromas and Flavors
                          2. Base Ingredients
                          3. Bridget Ingredients
                          4. Best Source Regions
                          5. Wine Styles
                          6. Tips to Successful Matches for that particular win.

As a lover of Super Tuscans and Brunellos I found the section on Sangiovese to be the most helpful. Reading the overview of the grape I figured out why certain classic Italian dishes marry so well with wines that are predominately Sangiovese.

For each recipe that is included in the book the author offers two wine selections. The recipes are solid, mostly classics but some with a spin. As a steadfast red wine drinker I was hesitant to try the white wine recipes. However, I decided to be open-minded and give white wine another try. I was surprised to find out that I can enjoy white wine, in the right situation.

Most of the recipes have a corresponding full color photograph of the finished dish. The recipes directions are clearly written and easy to follow.

If you love wine and good food I think you will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant food and wine paring.......2006-04-27

We joined a wine group about 15 years ago. We get together about once a month to taste commerial wines in a blind tasting. This past year we decided to taste 3 different wine varietals, first without food and then the same 3 wines with food. I was a little concerned as to what to serve with certain foods so researched some books and decided to order The Wine Lover's Cookbook: Great Recipes for the Perfect Glass of Wine. I decided on the Veal-Stuffed Manicotti with Roasted Yellow Pepper Pesto. I choose the wines that were suggested, Sangiovese, Zinfandel and for the 3rd wine I choose a Pinot Noir. Without food the Pinot came first, then Zinfandel and Sangiovese. With food the Sangiovese came first then the Zinfandel and Pinot Noir last, just as the book suggested. The food was outstanding with the wines and we had rave reviews. I have also made many other delicious recipes from this book, using ingredients I never thought of using. Some recipes are a little time consumming but in the end its worth every minute. This is a wonderful cook book. I can hardly wait until our next tasting! I think I might make the Pizza with Peppered Shrimp, Canadian Bacon, Mushrooms, & Feta Cheese, sounds good doesn't it? I just ordered The Wine Lover Cooks with Wine. Thanks

I borrowed this book from a friend and then bought it for myself! We enjoy wine and love how this book explains which ingredients and specific recipes complement each grape. The recipes have unique ingredients but nothing that can't be found at a conventional grocery store. Great idea book for dinner parties!

The Border Collie's strong instincts, quick wits and intelligence have proved both a delight and a challenge to owners. The book explains how to address this intelligence, through training, work and socialization.

While the entire book was jammed packed with useful information and background history of the Border Collie, I especially enjoyed the chapter where 6 dogs were comparatively judged. Head shots, front, side and rear views of 3 male and 3 female black & white Border Collies were each critiqued by judges from England, the U.S. and New Zealand. Very interesting how each judge interpreted his/her country's standard of ideal Border Collie conformation, as well as being helpful in pointing out flaws of basic dog anatomy in general..

A must read before you purchase that puppy!

I got this for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. She has it "dog-earred" and says it is truly the ultimate border collie book

                          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2003-03-06

Thank goodness for the wise writing and lovely pictures in this book. She does her best to dispell the myth of the 'genius'dog and the other myth of the 'border collies are black and white and stick thin small dogs'.

As an owner of a mostly white border collie, who is sometimes dismayed by people's comments about 'well she must have (insert breed) in her to be white', it is heartening to see pictures of every possible shade and shape of border collie. Border collies are very diverse - that's because the emphasis is (until recently, some may say) on a working dog, not a certain 'look'. It's their quirky minds that make them so different. A few hours with an obsessive fly chaser and you'll understand :-)

She has great sections on puppies, activities for your BC and lots of history and opinion. Some of the information may rub people the wrong way - bc people tend to be opinionated!

As a soon-to-be Border Collie owner, this book has proven to be very helpful. Its chapter on puppies and puppy care from the day you bring it to your home is very good. Living in Denmark, you cannot find many books about the Border Collie so I was very pleased to find this one. I am picking up my little puppy in less than 3 weeks and after reading this book, I feel confident that we have made the right choice regarding dog breed and the breeder. I can especially recommend this book if it's the first time you're getting a dog.

4 out of 5 stars Great book on Border Collies, written by a true expert.......2002-01-11

This author has done an excellent job describing the Border Collie. Whether it's behavior, motivations, breed history, stregths, weaknesses, she demonstrates that she is truly an expert. This is not a generic dog book with Border Collie pictures pasted in, it is an excellent reference that I intend to use for many years to come. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has or is considering purchasing a Border Collie.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for the Collector.......2007-10-05

This is a nice book for the collector, particularly one who is fairly new to the hobby. It covers most of the more popular makers of the 19th and 20th century. Paperweights have been on the go for a relatively short space of time, about 150 years give or take a year and initially started out to serve the purpose for which they were originally designed, a weight to hold down paper on a desk. A useful implement in the days of pen and paper.

Very soon after they started being produced they became more and more complex and attractive with each factory striving to outdo their rivals. There are few people who fail to be fascinated by a good paperweight, particularly the Millefiori type which comprise of small canes of glass of varying shapes and colours, sealed into what initially was a molten lump of glass.

The various forms of weights, millefiori as we have just mentioned, Sulphides, Lampwork and Dumps (the large green domes of glass that were often used as doorstops in their larger sizes), are all mentioned. Plus information on how to start collecting and differentiating between the different makers, not always easy, even for the expert.

One part of the book that did appeal to me in particular were the pages that showed the different cane designs for the different makers. This is an excellent aid to identifying paperweights that you are unsure of and I have used this method more than once myself.

5 out of 5 stars A Significant Contribution to the Literature on Oscar Wilde.......2003-02-13

Though the theaters around the world continue to produce the plays of Oscar Wilde and even the Opera houses consider Strauss' adaptation of Wilde's "Salome" as a staple in the repertoire, and while biographies and films about this unique artist increase in number with every year, this book approaches yet another aspect of Wilde's genius. Charlotte Gere has researched the Aesthetic Movement in England at the turn of the century and attributes the style and popularity of the 'new look' in home decor to Wilde and his entourage. From paintings to furniture to wallpaper to fabric to book design - all the art nouveau trends were at times created by Wilde and at other times merely popularized by him on his numerous tours. The book is resplendent in illustrations of paintings, homes, photographs, and a lot of just fine biographical data about Oscar Wilde. A thoroughly informative and entertaining slant on The Importance of Being Oscar!

                                      Book Description

Barton Benes imbues mundane objects with the mystical power of holy relics. He assembles modern-day curiosity cabinets, or reliquaries, out of everyday items that have been touched by fame. From such bizarre celebrity-owned articles as Madonna's panties, Bill Clinton's throat lozenge, O. J. Simpson's glove, Larry Hagman's gallstone, and glass from the car crash in which Princess Diana died, Barton Benes creates an art that is as arresting as it is unique.

Whether his creativity is fueled by discards with the pedigree of fame or infamy, such as a Frank Sinatra fingernail clipping or the Son of Sam's hair, or by unusual and strange objects from human and natural history, such as mummy dust, Benes mounts and labels the items and assembles them into mini-museums that are, as this book shows, alternately provocative, disturbing, and amusing, but always compelling. Benes supplies humorous captions that tell the quirky history of each piece, and John Berendt, best-selling author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, writes an insightful introduction on Benes's art and discusses his own fascination with it.

5 out of 5 stars After all,Man has a basic instinct to be a hunter and a gatherer........2007-01-02

Anyone who has ever collected anything will be mesmerized by this book.It shows what it means to be bitten by the urge to "collect".There are many terms used to describe it; collections, assemblages, amassment, stockpile, assortment, bunch, hoard, gathering and many other descriptions. The thing is,that with a personal collection ,there are absolutely no nules, other than those the collector decides to impose upon himself. Even then, the only reason for restrictions is that the collection is forever struggling to get out of hand;not that some object isn't worthwhile. The one thing every collector soon learns, and which is immediately evident with this collector and his museum and book,is that the real fun is in acquiring the object and the people and experiences along the way.No sooner is an object added to the collection, catalogued and given its home,in a box, drawer, shelf, cabinet,or whatever;that accomplishment is absorbed;now onward and upward to the next.
Some collectors start off with the objects in mind and set out to acquire them. The author does some of that,as do any collectors, but his approach is to be totally open for any item;and in most cases had not even thought of the object before it ,or the opportunity, presented itself.
I have always admired the art of collecting, even as a kid;and as an adult have a special admiration for a collection that is unique or "off-the - wall",such as this one. How anyone can go through life and never collect anything always amazes me.I guess come people do it with money, taking trips, buying companies, having mistresses,or whatever;and isn't that all the same thing?
The author with his collection shows that it can be,but it is not necessarily,a matter of money,to build a collection. Even in his case, when people get to know what his interests are; the "stuff"just keeps coming and coming.
Keeping the whole thing focused and controlled becomes a major problem.
Personally,I have been a collector most of my life.
The first one I dreamed up as a kid was a twig collection. In my hometown was a Government Experimental Farm featuring, trees, plants and other agricultural sciences. One day,I noticed that trees were labeled with their species in English and Latin. So,off I'd go with my little notebook, pencil and jackknife and clip me a twig. I would display it by splitting the twig, exposing the inside, alongside with the bark .
There is no limit to what one can collect other than ones imagination, and of course where to keep it all.
In no way, have I taken this obsession as serious as the author;but I do have something from my time in New York, where I worked a block away ,while they were building The World Trade Towers.During the initial excavation;I picked up a piece of the bedrock. It is a piece of Gneiss ,with tiny, sparkling ruby-red Garnets in it .Worth nothing but its sentimental value. Then later, when they were covering the outside of the the plaza with marble,I picked up a piece .There was a pile of scrap pieces.Though, who would have thought at the time, these pieces would have made great bookends.
I am sure every knows someone who collects something,be it stamps, coffee spoons,Election paraphernalia, coins, matchbook covers, swizzle sticks, beer cans, puzzles, books, postcards, etc.I have a friend who collects a little soil, sand or stones, from famous spots, beaches etc. and displays them in little bottles. Worthless, but for the memories.
I have another friend who ,has a fairly large property ,and through the years collected various species of birch trees, and now has probably the largest collection in the Province.Part of his enjoymentis in having Naturalist groups visit him as he tells the source of them and the stories behind them.
All in all ,a fascinating read for anyone bitten by the "collecting bug".

As you browse the book you think, "How did the artist get this stuff? How do we know it's authentic?" Then you trust that it is, because he would have artistic integrity. "Who cares!" you say to yourself. You're in the next phase of enjoying the book - the voyeuristic delight of being so up close and personal to all these bizarre snipets of fame and history. What a collector! Thoroughly enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and not a little strange.......2004-01-13

I think that readers will most enjoy this book if they, like Benes, have a compulsion for keepsakes. But this book is not a typical museum (even though Benes calls his curio cabinets "museums"-probably ironically?). He preserves mostly mundane everyday objects that are identifiable as extraordinary only by descriptive captions; this is what makes his work fascinating. But Benes doesn't approach "preservation" as a museum would; like saints' relics, he willingly destroys some objects to maximize the number of relics, which he then sells. Most museums would never do that--at least not with a typical painting or sculpture. When Benes got Julia Child's mug, he apparently broke off the handle. He put a Picasso lithograph in a blender, and then sold it in cocaine bottles by the gram. Eventually, when down to the last vial, he blended the remainder with plain paper and sold "cut" Picasso. His work made me think about why we preserve what we do, what it is we are trying to remember and record about our lives and our society, perhaps especially why a brush with celebrity makes an object special. The joy of the book, however, is Benes' storytelling. No less voyeuristic than marveling at his friend's prosthetic testicle or Eunice Shriver's toothbrush, there is guilty pleasure in reading the stories of how Benes or his friends acquired the relics... often by stealing.

I gave Curiosa to friends, relatives and business associates for Christmas this year and it was a hit every time. The book itself is beautifully produced, with gorgeous photography and excellent design. Benes' text is funny, engaging and insightful. Leafing through the book is addictive; once started, it is difficult to put down. I hope Benes produces more books of his work. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil author John Berendt's humorous introduction tells the story of how he saved a prescription medicine bottle ("one nasal douche, use twice daily or as needed") belonging to Roy Rogers for 30 years, not knowing what to do with it but not quite being able to throw it away. When he meant Benes at a dinner party, he knew he had finally found its ultimate home, in one of Benes' museums. Some of Benes' relics could cause squeamishness in a different context, but Benes' work and in particular the beautiful presentation in Curiosa, makes them palatable and meaningful to virtually anyone.

                                      Book Description

Twenty-five years after moving to the United States from Mali, an acclaimed filmmaker and scholar explores what it means to be an African in the West, interweaving his own life story with reflections on immigration and change.

In this deeply personal and unflinchingly honest exploration of what it means to be African, Manthia Diawara recounts the bittersweet experience of an expatriate who no longer lives life as an "African" yet is the object of others' fantasies and fears about people of the dark continent. Comparing his fortunes in America with those of his cousins in Paris, Diawara assesses the way tradition and community give meaning to their lives, despite the ugliness of modern French attitudes toward Africans. At the same time, he confronts the trauma experienced by Africans in America such as Amadou Diallo. Diawara's experience of life as an African and an African American yields fresh and stunning insights about race, ethnic identity, immigration, and assimilation in the modern globalized world.

This important and original book will shatter many cherished notions about what it means to experience race as an African in the world today. Beautifully written and shrewdly argued, its unsentimental view of African culture and traditions, as well as its debunking of the idealized promise of an unracialized life abroad, is certain to ignite debate.

4 out of 5 stars An African observer like no other.......2004-07-01

Having read Professor Diawara's "IN SEARCH OF AFRICA" and been struck by his outspokenness, I was left with a puzzling question. How could he rail in that book against racism and exploitation in the West, while also taking African societies to task for failing to get on board with modernity? I'm used to views advocating that Africans be encouraged to respect their own traditions, to "be themselves"; the notion that certain aspects of Africans' cultural identity are holding them back is provocative, especially coming from an African intellectual like Diawara.

He elaborates on this seeming contradiction more fully in "WE WON'T BUDGE," while fulminating at length on the very divergent meanings of difference in French and American societies. His focus is modern migration, which he analyzes through his own experience as a young migrant in Paris and then in Washington in the 1970s, then again in Paris (now as a tenured professor and visiting researcher) at the turn of the millennium. Through his remembered interactions in all these settings with friends and family, with policemen and poets, with bureaucrats and bosses, he helps the reader come to grips with the meaning of exile.

"Exile" is an apt word for Diawara's life: like James Baldwin, or even Hemingway, it's something he's chosen, rather than something forced upon him. He's neither a refugee nor a labor migrant looking only to support his family back home. In fact he's severed many of the bonds that connected him with Mali, his native country. He's turned his back on his family's religion and tried to ignore its demands that he conform to what he considers stifling customs. For this reason it's refreshing to read his perspective on migration, identity, and home in the modern world.

Diawara's voice can be jarring, however, as well as contradictory at times. While he wears the mantle of ethnographer in telling his story, he doesn't tell us what his narrative authority rests on. In "WE WON'T BUDGE," all the dialogues with various persona appear to be reproduced verbatim, but I suspect they are merely paraphrased since he never mentions recording his conversations with people. Maybe he occasionally puts words in his interlocutors' mouths to illustrate a point. Moreover, he shows us the full text of letters he both wrote and received while a young man in Paris and DC. Did he keep copies of letters he sent, or get them back from their recipients? To do either shows tremendous ego; more likely, he's paraphrasing again to the best of his recollection. By presenting these memories as hard fact, Diawara tries to come off as both social scientist and memoirist, blending objective analysis with subjective experience.

This approach doesn't always work. Does the author contradict himself? Very well then, he contradicts himself. Nonetheless, or maybe because of this, "WE WON'T BUDGE" is a fascinating, quixotic, and lucid glimpse into the life of an African exile in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Professor Diawara!.......2003-08-07

Professor Diawara in this book speaks directly to what seems to be a generation of multicultural, intellectual nomads who are knowledgeable about numerous world cultures but not truly comfortable in any of them. His voyage to New York, beginning in Bamako and stopping for a time in Paris, is an interesting one and raises serious questions about the ever-kinetic lives of Africans who must shuttle between the Continent, London, New York, Paris and the other major cities of their colonizers in an unceasing uphill battle whose sole goal is a better standard of living.

His discussions of the culture clash between West Africans and the French are also salient and will seem familiar to anyone living in one of the world's multi-culti magnet cities. It is through his descriptions that we learn that we are all, in many ways, dealing with the same problems of modernity and negotiating the distance at which two cultures can peacefully coexist.

                                      4 out of 5 stars A Journey Back.......2003-07-07

I have always enjoyed looking at life through another's eyes and now I have been able to do it from an international perspective. The title "We Won't Budge" does not give away the true meaning behind the text. It is just enough to invite the reader to pick it up and explore all that it has to offer. Diawara takes you on a journey of personal and intellectual moments that impact his life and the way he sees the world. It's a very honest and brave reflection of one's self. I am glad that he has decided to share his experience with world.

5 out of 5 stars A modern day African memoir.......2003-06-16

I stumbled across this book by chance and debated for a while whether or not I should buy the hardback edition or wait till it came out in paperback. Thankfully I spent the money and have no regrets - only shame that I even debated whether to get it or not! This is a wonderfully written book and one that should appeal to a wide audience. For readers who are longing for a book that is hard to put down - this is your book. For readers who are interested in learning more about Africa, Africans, France and America - this is your book. For readers who interested in issues of race, identity and belonging- this is your book. For all global souls and Africans who are dying to see parts of their world and experiences described on paper - you must buy this book. It's a rare gem that made me laugh and want to cry. I highly recommend it.
