I Remember Heaven.......2002-09-08
I hope this book becomes a best seller because it is full of truth, the likes of which I have never known before. I just hope it is all true.

Robert E. Howard came into the fiction magazine scene virtually on Dashell Hammett's heels. By that time Howard was a full-fledged professional writer; he was willing to try any marketplace to make a living. Despite an aversion to the detective formula, he wrote the tales in Graveyard Rats during the same years he chronicled the adventures of Conan. This collection features a new introduction by scholar Don Herron, editor of "The Dark Barbarian," the definitive look at the life and work of Robert E. Howard.

Swamp Cat more voodoo than tiger Steve Harrison finds, knife work here.

Murdered men, murdered Mongol murderers, and more. What else could it be but a secret Oriental formula plot? Or so Brock Rollins discovers, among other strange things.

Harrison has a few problems on river street. There are bad Khans around. Ok, how many stories are the Khans the good guys? No, female drummers don't count, sorry. The odd scary publication and object to go along with it.

Rodents start at the head, not the knees, as far as human bodies go, as scared men have Harrison on the trail of a murderer.

A great read.......2004-02-26
Certainly incomplete, but a great thumping read for fans and folks unfamiliar with Robert E. Howard. Black talons and others are terrific tales of the era. A tad pricey, but a durable volume of tales.
Detectives in the Pines.......2004-02-26
This is an incomplete collection of Howard's detective and weird menace stories. The contents are
Black Talons / Fangs of Gold / The Tomb's Secret / Names in the Black Book / Graveyard Rats / Black Wind Blowing
About half of these have appeared in other, mass-market books; the others have been hard to come by, so the collection is welcome for that reason.
However, the price is pretty steep for 6 stories, and lesser Howard ones at that. Can the rights to these stories have been that expensive? Baen managed to publish 7 mass-market paperback Howard collections, each of which has about twice as many stories as this, for about $6-7 per book. Wandering Star also publishes expensive Howard collections, but those are of the widely known characters, in deluxe editions with illustrations. No illustrations here, aside from the generic, apparently public-domain cover illo.
There's also an introduction by Howard scholar Don Herron, but it doesn't add much, if any, value.
If you're a Howard fan, you'll want this book. Even lesser Howard is better than some other people. But I can't see the general public wanting to spend this much money for so little.

New Versions of Great Stories.......2007-02-11
I just added these radio dramas to my collection. When I purchased them I thought they were olde time radio dramas and that the TV show had been made from them. Not so. These are modern radio versions made from the scripts of the old TV show. And, in many ways, I like them better than the TV versions. I have every intention of buying all of them I can get. My only criticism is that I get tired of hearing Stacy Keach's advertisement for the website at the end of each program. Small annoyance. I highly recomment them.
Into The Twilight Zone...Anywhere !.......2006-03-16
These are some of the original T.Z. episodes re-written especially for 'radio'.
Now available on CD, these are the first ten episodes of the radio series on ten discs. The stories are in no particular order according to the T.V. show, but does include 'The Lonely', the first televised episode. The other stories include 'Night of the Meek', 'A Kind of Stopwatch', 'The Lateness of the Hour', 'The Thirty-Fathom Grave','The Man in the Bottle','The After Hours', 'Mr.Dingle The Strong', 'A Stop At Willoughby' and 'Of Late I think of Cliffordville'.
They do vary in (content)quality, from stories like 'Night of the Meek'...whilst very professional and well executed, is also very 'workmanlike' and lacking the atmosphere of the original. However, 'The After Hours' works magnificently portraying a truly spooky atmosphere which is enhanced by these pin-sharp recordings.
Stacy Keach steps into Rod's wingtip brogues as the host 'in-and-out' of the stories and he is an excellent choice. Each episode has a guest star and I for one was pleasantly shocked by how good Lou Diamond Phillips is, as he crops up a few times in the entire series.
All in all, a very good first volume. A good choice of stories, something quite literally for everyone (horror, suspense, comedy and sci-fi stories) with top notch production values.
I will certainly be buying Volume 2 & 3 as I have enjoyed this one so much.
A great new twist on a classic!!.......2006-01-23
These radio dramas are so cool!!I recieved a free sample cd from the creators and really loved what I heard. I for sure wanted to own all of them for my long commute. As the reviewer earlier said..the sample cd I recieved had "commercials". I knew I would not pay for advertising so I called the company to ask if the ones I would purchase would be add free. They informed me that the newer 10 cd volumes did not have commercials. Well I just recieved the 1st three 10 cd volumes from Amazon this week and can vouch for the no commercials fact. From what they said the smaller pack versions have commercials.
These guys did a stellar job of these radio dramas! They had to change a few things here and there to fit the radio format..and I do not mind any of the subtle changes. The sound effects and the atmosphere they create is pure magic...I have gotten lost in each one I've heard. I have been a TZ fan since childhood (I'm 39) and I can honestly say these are very very well done imo. I think Rod Serling would be proud!! Look forward to getting the rest of them in the near future. If you like TZ I think you will love these.
Beware of advertisements in these recordings.......2005-12-27
These stories are well done but what they neglect to mention is that there are advertisements 2 to 3 times per episode. A major flaw. When I pay for a recoeded story I don't want to have to forward through the ads. So be warned if you don't like advertising in your listening experience don't buy these!!!
Amazing sound experience!.......2004-12-17
First off, this is NOT just the audio tracks from the TV show put onto CD. These are close to the same story lines from the classic shows, but were actually rewritten and modified for radio, as the visuals now have to be in your mind, not on a television screen. The actors are different too, and the audio is the cleanest, most crystal clear audio of any recording you can find today. Plus the stereo imaging is amazing.
This is a treat to listen to just if you an audiophile into really great audio and production techniques alone, it is an adventure for your ears.
But the stories are classics as well, so this is a really nice treat. I have heard a few episodes played on a local radio station and on XM radio, but neither of those two sources do any justice to the audio quality and sonic realism of having the actual CD and listening to it on good speakers or headphones directly from these CDs.
The sound effects are really amazing too.
No Twilight Zone fan should be without this, and anyone into Old Time Radio programs would really find this a treat as well, especially with the digital clean audio. No tape hiss, no record pops, it is creepy how clear the audio is.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
If you find yourself in daily dread of how to fix those vegetables that Mom always told you to eat, your lifeline is here. Unique and tempting recipes are abundant in Jack Bishop's Vegetables Every Day. Throughout the book's 66 chapters--one for each vegetable he includes in the book--Bishop features the retail availability of the specific veggie, the best season to find the most flavorful choice, and which characteristics to look for in a good specimen. He also includes recommendations for best preparation and which spices and herbs will best support and enhance the flavor of the vegetable of choice.
The recipes range from the basic to the complex, from simple steamed broccoli to rich soups such as Corn Chowder with Leeks and Potatoes. Even traditional recipes get an update, such as sautéed mushrooms cooked with butter, onions, and garlic. In just two simple steps, Bishop's interpretation has the mushrooms taking on an exquisite flavor that can stand alone as a side dish or as a topping for a rich steak. There may be some vegetables that are much less well known and even more difficult to find at the corner grocery store, such as malanga, Jerusalem artichokes, or salsify, but if you're interested, his suggestions might just help you find and tastefully enjoy them. Vegetables Every Day is the solution to satisfying the recommended five servings of vegetables a day. --Teresa Simanton
Book Description
The fresh vegetable sections in most supermarkets, farmers' markets, and gourmet groceries are overflowing with an amazing range of produce, both familiar and exotic. Consumers are tempted by kale and kohlrabi, taro and tomatillos, bok choy and burdock, along with all the familiar choices. Now acclaimed cookbook author and food writer Jack Bishop offers a comprehensive A-to-Z guide to this bounty of produce, complete with selection tips, preparation instructions, and hundreds of recipes for more than sixty-six commonly available vegetables. With Bishop's expert advice, you'll learn how to coax the very best flavor from every vegetable, whether it's a carrot, cauliflower, or cardoon. Wondering how and when to buy the sweetest green beans? Bishop suggests buying at the height of summer, and selecting beans that are crisp and slim (older, thicker beans will be mealy and bland). Confused about how to cook the spring's first sorrel? Bishop offers such unique and delicious dishes as Sorrel and Potato Soup and Sorrel Frittata. These recipes -- like all 350 in the book -- are clear and uncomplicated, ensuring success for even the novice cook. So whether you are looking for a salad or side dish, a vibrant main course, or simply great mashed potatoes, you are sure to find it in this essential kitchen companion. We all know that vegetables are the key to healthful eating -- now it's time to discover how great they can taste, each and every day!
Customer Reviews:
Great resource!.......2007-02-06
I have had this cookbook for several months now, and I use it almost daily. I have made many recipes in this book, some several times. It also encourages me to seek out more unusual vegetables that I might not have typically bought. I look to see what recipe sounds good, and then I go out and buy the vegetable. My kids have learned to love brussels sprouts, leeks, eggplant, radishes and spinach just to name of few. I intend on giving this to my friends who are in search of a new way to get their kids to eat vegetables without the typical "dinner table fight"! This is one you will always refer to not only for weeknight meals, but also elegant dinners.
Vegetables on the side.......2006-10-16
I ordered this book because I want to make vegetables a central part of my meals. However, almost all of the recipes in this book are for vegetables as a side dish.
If you want an "encyclopedia" of vegetables, with information on how to choose them, basic preparation and cooking, and which spices/herbs go best, then Vegetables Every Day is an excellent choice. But if you want a book full of recipes with vegetables as a main dish, then look elsewhere.
Great reference, well written.......2006-08-02
This is a great book for folks who are looking for some good, dependable recipes for keeping vegetables on the table. There's a helpful profile of each vegetable, including seasonality and things to avoid when selecting at the store, and general preparation instructions as well as specific recipes. As a frequent and enthusiastic cook, I was excited to try some of the less familiar items (armed with a trustworthy recipe). Written by Jack Bishop, who is featured on America's Test Kitchen, and knows his stuff. Good reference for on-the-fly cooking, great reading before a trip to the farmer's market.
my most-used cookbook.......2006-06-28
I don't know that I have much to add to the previous 23 reviews, but I cannot say enough positive things about "Vegetables Every Day." I own 30-40 cookbooks and after five years of ownership this one remains by far the one I use most often -- multiple times every week.
This cookbook is simply without peer for its incredible breadth of vegetable side-dish recipes; its ease of preparation, with minimal exotic, hard-to-find and hard-to-afford ingredients; and its healthful preparations that really highlight (rather than masking) the vegetables involved. Bishop is no fat-phobe, even calling occasionally for a tablespoon or two of butter, but these certainly aren't recipes where health takes a back seat to taste.
Most importantly, though, this book succeeds by making EVERY vegetable lovable. I can't tell you how many vegetables I used to *think* I hated, before I tried them as prepared by Bishop. Beets, turnips, parsnips, cauliflower, kale -- he makes all not only palatable but wholly enjoyable. I can't recall ever having had a misfire with any recipe in this book, and by now I've probably made about two-thirds of them.
I work in PR and have joked to friends (while proselytizing on behalf of Jack Bishop) that someday when I leave my current job I will go do PR on behalf of "Vegetables Every Day." If you are a home cook who uses cookbooks, do yourself a favor and add this one to your collection.
A Proven Winner.......2006-06-14
I cook a lot and buy a lot of cookbooks, and this is definitely one I keep at the front of the shelf. I've never had one of the recipes fail and it's been a fantastic resource for getting everyone in the family to get out of the broccoli/grean beans rut. It's fun to go to the farmer's market knowing anything I buy I'll be able to find a way to cook!

97 Ways to Make a Dog Smile is a gift of pure pleasure for dogs and the owners who love them. Created by Jenny Langbehn, a veterinary nurse who really knows what makes dogs happy, it combines the creative gift of touch--unexpected ways to rub, massage, scratch, tickle, and knead--with imaginative play scenarios that are just loopy enough to ensure that your dog will be amused, whether he's laughing with you or at you. And to heighten the pleasure of both reader and dog, adorable full-color photographs of smiling dogs accompany each entry. Just look at those dogs (you might say), what a tail-wagging, chop-licking, howling good time they're having. And see if your dog doesn't agree.
Try In a Nutshell, the classic sleight-of-hand game, by hiding a treat under one of three plastic cups. The Lawrence Welk--dogs love to chase soap bubbles even more than toddlers do. Get fit while playing. Or use Subliminal Advertising, which works by sneaking a favorite word like cookie into an otherwise boring rant. You'll be surprised by how closely your dog pays attention to what you say, and how broad the smile will be when he hears that special word. Just be sure to have said cookie on hand.

"They live to please and seem to do so with great joy.".......2007-04-20
This is a delightful little book that celebrates the pleasure of owning a dog.Anyone who has spent any time around a dog, immediately understands why they are called "man's best friends". They show the ultimate in patience and devotion to anyone who gives them attention. They seem to understand when the people around them are busy and will simply wait endlessly until you "can get around to them". At any time you decide to give them a bit of attention, they actively become involved as if you are the most important thing in the world. Then they want to show how much they appreciate and love you.The only thing they want,is to please you.
I have had a dog ever since I was a kid and every one of them has been a cherished member of the family and a friend to all.I must admit that there was little new to me in this book;and probably not much new to anyone who has a dog. However;I thoroughly enjoyed every page, photo and technigue covered in the book, along with the countless other things we do with our dog to relate to each other.
To even suggest that a dog can't smile leaves me speechless. They not only smile, but also, love, tease, plead, enjoy, pine, get restless, get bored, worry, anticipate, remember, forget, conjole, get tired out,and enjoy everything around them and love it when you share any time with them. When they have had an enjoyable encounter ,they look you straight in the eye,wag their tail, and tell you that they are game for more ,if you are. Afterwards, they are content to settle down and wait until you want to do something again.
This little book would be a wonderfol gift for any person who has a dog as well as for someone who is just getting a dog and preparing to make it part of the family.
Delightful!.......2005-10-10
Ninety-seven handy suggestions to improve the quality of your best friend's life with fun and games and the occasional good-spirited prank.
My mom has this book and her kind-natured, if slightly dim three-year-old Chessie-Collie mix, Fergus, loves some of the suggestions in here. One of the ones I've tried with him is number eighty-two: slingshooting treats for him to catch using a plastic spoon as a catapult. Another one that seems particularly enjoyed is number eighteen: juggling. I've always been a good juggler and when I juggle things Fergus wants, like a trio of rolled-up socks or tennis balls, he goes NUTZ trying to leap up and get what I'm keeping right out of his reach. It's a hoot.
The one suggestion that really tripped me out, though, and had me laughing was number thirty-two: "The Three Little Bears routine" which involves sneaking into your pet's bed and letting him catch you there for a change. Ha!!! Haven't tried that one yet but maybe I will when the time is right. Justice for all the times he's sneaked up onto Mom's furniture and stuff.
This cheerful little book is great not only for the ideas it gives you but for its ninety-seven pages of smiling, happy doggies!
Something For Everyone And Every Dog.......2005-09-05
There are some good ideas in here to make your dog happy. Although, if you are a true dog lover, you probably have already implemented many of these suggestions. The only one I disagree with is howling with your dog in the back yard. That might not make your neighbors happy. The pictures of the dogs included in this book are some of the best I've ever seen. A fun book for dog lovers of every breed.
A fun read and good resource.......2005-08-09
I often use this book in my animal assisted therapy work with at-risk children- it has been a wonderful tool and has made many children smile as well! A very happy book - with the ability to make a lasting impact when incorporated in therapeutic work. Kate Nicoll, MSW, author of Soul Friends
I agree...worth it for the pictures alone!.......2004-12-31
I received this as a gift for Christmas, and not a day has gone by that I haven't picked it up just to look at all those smiling doggie faces. What a joy, and a real spirit lifter. As for my dog, all I have to do is giggle and she gets the BIGGEST grin on her face. There's nothing like a happy, smiling dog.

This book is aptly titled, for both the objects contained in it--things such as Dali's lip-shaped sofa and Gaultier's torso-shaped perfume vials--and the book itself will delight the reader. The furniture, vases, fabrics, and other objects are organized according to four classifications: "Body Language," "Inversion and Transformation," "Is Ornament a Crime?," and "Flights of Fancy." All are reproduced in full color and accentuated by essays elaborating the ideas. Quotes by or about the artists, placed alongside each photograph, complement the pieces. In one, Frank Gehry reveals the genesis of his paper furniture: "I got interested in paper furniture when I was designing for department stores and had to invent display furniture that nobody really had to sit on.... I would draw and my assistants and I would then make them. I never expected to sell these things until someone from Bloomingdale's saw them and suggested I develop them." This fabulous view of 20th-century decorative arts includes both well-known and obscure items, making for hours of reading and viewing pleasure.
Book Description
By the early part of this century, the principles of Modernism in design-- simplicity of form, little or no ornament, truth to materials-- were established as avant-garde ideas, and functionalism soon became an overriding concern. However, looking back from our fin-de-siècle perspective, it is evident that the history of modern design is far more varied and complex. This lavishly illustrated and beautifully designed book demonstrates the surprising ways in which Modernist designers also took alternative routes to create art beyond function.
From Art Nouveau and the Wiener Werkstätte to Pop and Post-modernism, Designed for Delight presents over 200 works from the collection of the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts, in all media, focusing in particular on four aspects of the decorative arts through objects and essays. "Body Language" explores the ways in which the human body and its various parts have been used as elements of design. In "Inversion and Transformation" we see how materials have been unexpectedly inverted. Contrary to the accepted notion that Modern design should be devoid of ornament, the richly decorated surfaces and textures of objects in "Is Ornament a Crime?" argue for the everlasting appeal of floral and geometric patterns. Fantasy and illusion have been equally compelling, and "Flights of Fantasy" demonstrates how twentieth-century artists and designers incorporated the fantastic and even the irrational into their work.
Alongside scholarly inquiries on these themes, four essays reflect on the broader context of architecture, painting, sculpture, and design. The objects are accompanied by the words of the artists themselves, or of commentators from throughout the century-- including many quotations unique to this book-- Lalique and Hoffmann, Dalí and Ruhlmann, Pucci and Nikki de Saint-Phalle, Pesce, Sottsass, and Starck. Their words provide a fascinating glimpse into the processes of creation and perception. Published to coincide with a landmark traveling exhibition organized by the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts, Designed for Delight is certain to become a standard reference for decorative arts of the twentieth century.

Product Description
Sailing fans will be excited to learn that ABC has released the North Wind 28-a more compact version of their sleek NorthWind 36 R/C yacht. The "28" shares virtually all of the same features of its larger predecessor, including a durable one-piece plastic hull and deck, as well as a two-piece mast of aircraft-grade aluminum.
Like the "36", the "28" uses nothing more than two standard servos to control sails and rudder. A 31/2" arm attaches to one servo and handles sail "winch" duties. The other servo controls the rudder via a bulletproof steel rod and clevis arrangement that exits the rear of the yacht's "cabin" and connects directly to the rudder's control arm. Aside from the obvious cost benefits of not having to buy an expensive "winch" servo, this servo arrangement makes it a cinch to swap out servos and adjust controls. In our tests we found that JR's S517 BB Sport Servos were more than adequate for both "winch" and rudder duties.
A watertight battery and servo tray keeps everything nice and dry. To get to the tray, all you need to do is slide out the hatch cover and everything is within easy reach. The hatch cover itself is sleek and blends in nicely with the deck without affecting the scale lines. The prejoined deck and hull are also sealed against moisture.
While the deck and hull are prejoined, it still takes a little time to get the NorthWind 28's sails attached and rigged. The radio hatch for the hull must also be cut before the radio can be installed. Cutting the hatch isn't really that big of a deal, thanks to the clearly marked "cut" lines. With the helpful rigging and assembly diagrams in the instructions, assembly time should take about 14 hours. The time spent is well worth it and results in a

Book Description
A history of drink and drinking in Canada, from the European conquest to the present. Enlivened by photographs, ads, and cartoons, and, by turns, charming and disturbing, Booze tells a story with many chapters:
* liquor traffic
* alcohol in Native Indian communities
* prohibition
* bootlegging
* the advent of the wine bar
* the era of the cocktail lounge
"To write about booze is to enter into a minefield of controversy," writes Heron. The book's clear and lively style makes this controversial history come alive.

Book Description
Sitting in her grandmother Dhanna's kitchen, surrounded by the aromas of mint and the smoke of a hookah, warmed by the kangri tucked beneath her thighs, young Sudha Koul listened to tales of She Who Fears Nothing: The Tiger Lady, stories Sudha would repeat to her own daughters in time, though in a kitchen many thousands of miles away from her beloved Kashmir. This is a magical memoir of a land now consumed by political and religious turmoil, a richly detailed story of a girl's passage into maturity, marriage, and motherhood in the midst of an exquisite and fragile world that will never be entirely the same.

A child's beautiful memories.......2006-03-06
Most of this book is thoroughly engrossing. It is a memory, pure and simple. No attempt to analyze or rationalize, just a statement of life as it was, full of detail, painting the picture of an idyllic life with no fear of the future, not questioning any facet of existence, as a child views the world. As an insight into life in Kashmir at a certain period of time, it was a lovely portal, and certainly lends poignancy to all that appears in the news as to the wars that rage in the region. The beauty and richness of her culture and the family warmth that were hers shine through every page.
If the book had ended with her life in Kashmir, it would have been a beautiful book, but it continues on to detail a stereotypical immigrant existence in America. The author appears as a particularly impotent mother and representative of her culture. And in one very ironic paragraph, she refers to cultures that have been wiped out (native Americans) so that she might now occupy their place, but declares this a natural cycle, while at the same time lamenting the loss of her culture as an irretrievable tragedy. The childishness lingering into adulthood is not as appealing a read.
Overall, though, the loss of momentum at the end does not change the fact that it is a wonderfully vivid and captivating memoir and probably is a testimony to a lost way of life.
Interesting nuances of life in Kashmir.......2004-07-16
A good read for second generation Kashmiri Americans. The details were of interest, since of course its a world that Kashmiri-Americans of second generation will not get a chance to see. It's the kind of book I'd like to read with a Kashmiri close at hand to find out if the details are authentic (and not catered to the audience), and the experience universal. A unique find, though, since it's unclear how many books can tackle life in Himalayan valleys from the inside. Validates that Kashmiri pandits deserve and need to contribute to their own body of literature, write their own histories rather than relinquish that right to historians.
Koul writer of the Kashmir Soul.......2003-05-10
A beautifully written book of the Kashmir valley before the invasion of the Mujahadin and other Muslim terrorist actions from outside the peaceful valley of peaceful coexistence amongst the Kashmiri Hindus and Kashmiri Muslims. Ms. Koul, a former Indian majistrate with a Masters in Political Science from India writes a book for her children to learn of the beautiful life in Kashmir where young soon to be bethrothed women view Pashmina wool embroidered shawl samples dating back 100 years. The samples are easily viewed and ordered from the Kashmiri Muslim merchant who then continues the Pashmina relationship with the daughter or granddaughter's trousseau.
Ms. Koul effectly evokes a resplendant memoir without the heavy hand of serious political analysis which tends to be dry and flacid. A life too beautiful, too luscious, too happy, too comfortable to notice the cloak of darkness that would envelope paradise.
After attending her reading and purchasing Tiger Ladies, I am excited to add it to my collection of important soul books: The Red Tent, Woman Warrier, Autobiography of a Yogi and Facing Two Ways. Kashmir may be a memory of what once existed in a valley of Lotus eaters yet Ms. Koul's book concludes with a simile in the complacency of life in the US where life too is too comfortable, too beautiful, and perhaps too happy for Americans. (Incidentally written before 9.11.2001.) Which perhaps helps us to realize that there is yet another cloak of darkness enveloping us called American corporate imperialism ...product invasion via Hollywood, gasoline consumption, mass consumerism of junk products, junk food, junk tv, junk religion, junk politicians and the reaction against it by the Mujahadins of the Muslim world. Now in paperback form, this book is a respite from the propaganda on evening news in America.
Haunting and beautiful memoir.......2003-05-10
A lovely and bittersweet memoir of Koul's life in paradise, the Kashmir region of India. It's a tale of a lost way of life in a region that has been sundered by strife, conflict, and ultimately war between India and Pakistan, Hindus and Muslims.
Of especial interest is the reverence in which women of the region were held - in a country in which women are often no more than chattel. The Tiger Ladies is a book rich in sensual detail, a book people can enjoy on many levels: as travel literature, as a cultural study, for the descriptions of the food - and most of all as a loving and haunting memoir of a time and place that no longer exist.
a Paradise Lost to war.......2002-10-01
In Sudha Koul's beautifully written memoir of her youth and young adulthood in Kashmir, she brings the reader a vivid sense of her wonderful years spent there, and the bittersweet memories she revisits upon her return to a war-torn nation. Not having known much about the regional conflict, this book helped me understand who the people of the Kashmiri valley are today, and who they were before conflict came to rule their daily lives.
Ms. Koul's many stories of her grandmother, Danna, are a touching tribute to her grandmother's memory. Danna had her own particular ways of running her household. Many of these traditions have been passed down from mother to daughter through several generations. It is this sense of continuity from which the author draws her resolve and ambition to be both a respectful Brahmin daughter, and a successful 20th-century woman with a career outside the marital home.
There are many great stories to be enjoyed in this gem of a memoir. It is one of the best of its kind, and one of my favorite books this year.
I look forward to enjoying her other works.
