Book Description
Bestselling author Sam Bayer is stuck. Burned out from his third divorce, bored with the formulaic rut his writing has fallen into, and unable to deliver the manuscript for which he has been paid a stratospheric advance, he is desperate for inspiration. But a chance visit to his hometown of Crane's View, New York, sparks his imagination. Soon he immerses himself in an unsolved case of murder that took place when he was a teenager--Sam himself had discovered the body of the victim, a beautiful and wild teenage girl named Pauline. At the same time he is drawn into an explosive affair with a gorgeous but seriously loopy fan with the improbable name of Veronica Lake.
As Sam learns the disturbing facts about his lover's past, Pauline's murderer reappears--not only endangering Sam but putting his beloved fifteen-year-old daughter in jeopardy as well. Not knowing whom to trust, Sam has to brace himself for the truly unexpected resolution to this decades-old mystery.

More mystery than fantasy.......2003-05-02
Carroll is one of my favorite authors and he doesn't dissapoint with "Kissing The Beehive." However, this novel is much more a straight mystery story than Carroll's other efforts that always seem to have several fantastical elements to them. I gave the book only four stars because it was missing that bizarre twist that seems to surface halfway through other Carroll novels (e.g., the dog talking in Land of Laughs). Regardless, I do recommend this book. As with all of Carroll's work, it keeps you totally engrossed in the story till the very end.
Excellent, Thoroughly Engrossing Mystery.......2000-04-25
I've long been a fan of Jonathan Carroll's work and only recently picked up _Kissing the Beehive_. It's an excellent tale of a blocked writer (see Donald Westlake's _The Hook_) who goes back to his boyhood hometown to look into the mystery surrounding the death of a girl, whose body he discovered floating in the Hudson River. He intends to write the story of what he discovers and he ultimately discovers the secret. Along the way, we're treated to a slowly unfolding, very gripping story, including the tragic figure of a wild fan who first intrigues, then scares our protagonist. Carroll has a gift for writing some of the most poignant characters and scenes--things that really get under your skin and drag you in feet-first. I'm thinking about one memorable scene in which three of our main characters are sitting on the porch, sharing jokes and stories, and the writer-protagonist says something along the lines of "I'm very glad I have both of you in my life." I'm very glad there's an author like Jonathan Carroll in mine (too cheesy?).
Hurrah! Carroll's best since From the Teeth of Angels.......2000-02-23
This book had me captivated from the first page. Great mystery. Great characters. Good story!
One of the few authors that can leave the genre I discovered him in (fantasy/scifi) and still captivate me. The only other I can think of off the top of my head is Graham Joyce.
Carroll is great at keeping the reader off balance.
okay.......1999-10-10
This was my second Carroll book, after the fantastic Land of Laughs. It was pretty good for a while, but it got a little boring eventually and really fizzled out at the end. But I'd say it was still worth reading for his wonderful style of writing. I especially loved the interaction between Sam and his daughter in the first half of the book.
suave, stylized mystery.......1999-09-06
As a teen-ager in upstate New York, novelist Samuel Bayer discovered the body of a murdered woman. Returning home decades later to write about the death, he finds his rakehell high-school best friend has become police chief; an anonymous killer is delivering bouquets and mocking literary critiques; and his neurotic new girlfriend-a beautiful documentary filmmaker-is secretly interviewing everyone in his unfinished book. These elements (plus kidnapping, a village idiot, Westchester gangsters, and a suicide cult), form a sleightly-joined mystery, neatly corked by a swift conclusion over champagne in a drawing room.

Darkvision Adventure Module?.......2007-05-12
Darkvision was an ok read, good in places.
Overall the writing is ok. The characters are pretty good, although it was half way through the book before I began to think so.
The story is also pretty good. I did find the cystal body parts a bit sci-fi though, but it just about worked. And the climax came accross as if it had been an adventure module at some point.
For realms fans, the book has background around the shining south, which is rarely written about.
Overall although I enjoyed reading it, I don't think it was quite good enough to get 4 stars. If your a realms fan or D&D fan, its worth picking up.
And I have no idea why its called darkvision. It seemed a strange choice for title.
Very Good.......2007-03-26
I liked this book in The Wizards series the best. It included a whole part of Faerun I'd ignored and brought the Imaskaran Empire to my knowledge. I'd like to see what happens to Ususi and to the Elf fighter who would the bodyguard for the geomancer dwarf. Intriguing characters were well fleshed out. I know this because I wanted to know more about them after the story was over.
The biggest question for me was about the Vengeance Taker. He was the most intriguing character outside Ususi. The author hinted that perhaps his views were changing because of his exposure to the upper world and the light of day shining upon some things.
Well done!
Very exciting.......2006-11-12
I enjoyed the new outlook on the Imaskari race and a little bit about how they operate. I am hoping that this will open up more avenues for this race and possible expansions in the D&D world?
Great read, even as a stand alone book........2006-09-30
I read this book as a stand alone, not being a Forgotten Realms reader typically, and enjoyed it very much. I was pulled right into the stories and characters and flew through it in a few days. I found the basic premise behind the plot to be unique and creative and all of the characters to be intriguing and enjoyable to read about. I would love to get even more into the characters, but I think for a book this size and with that many characters, the depth of information on each character was appropriate. It just made me want to pick up more books in the series to learn more. I would definitely recommend reading this book, especially if you're ready to enjoy a good story without having to read an unending litany of epic novels like many fantasy stories out there today.
descent book.......2006-09-23
I read this book knowing that it was written by a new author to the Forgotten Realms universe. So dont be overly critical when you judge this book. Darkvision has a nice mix of different info on the realms that you dont see in most of the books these days. Mentions of the Leshay, halruaan airships, a descent mix of monsters and some passing history and info on Imaskar brings a nice variety that keeps you interested. The author, however, doesnt get the reader interested in the characters of the story like you would normally see. An example of this is the star elf character lacking any backstory to explain the actions and attitude that she puts forth throughout the story, which irritated me too much to enjoy this section of the book. I wound up just wishing her interaction in the book would go by as soon as possible. This plus other elements made the story lack the draw a book needs. Descent book that offers some variety that you dont see that often in Realm's books.

Argh!.......2000-03-07
I found this book poorly put together. (It could not seem to decide between light humor and horror). I was curious about the Natives and thought that the ending was a bit of a cop out. The largest problem I had with this book, however, was the subtle feeling that the charaters are not represented correctly. I cannot see Jadzia Dax as being afraid, for instance. And Quark is not really a coward, he just does not see fit to hide his fear when it strikes. Don't even let me get started on Major Kira and Kai! All in all quite disappointing read.
Great Book.......1999-07-15
The Rebels Trilogy was a great edtion to the Star Trek Universe and I think it was a great series. I liked hearing more about Kai Winn and here life during Cardassian Rule. I also Think that Daffyd Ad Hugh is a great writer and has done well with most of his Star Trek books!
Not quite as bad as pts. 1 and 2.......1999-04-09
"Rebels" pt. 3 was an O.K. conclusion to the overall poor series. I read "Vengeance", also by the author, which was bad, but thought I'd give him another chance; a big mistake. It was the fourth time I'd wished a ST novel would hurry and end; the other three times were Rebels 1&2 and Vengeance. As far as content, the turnaround of the Natives was nice to see, you feel for them throughout the series. The characterization was not the best. I thought Odo was too negative even for Odo, and Dax got on my nerves with her uncharacteristic bloodlust. The most upsetting thing is that we never learn who those people on the cover are! I'd assumed the woman was Sister Winn, but never in the three books does she pick up a weapon (except for a knife) and there was no prominent male Bajoran characters to explain the two men. Overall, I'm disappointed in my self for wasting $19.50 on this series.

You will find no canned soups in Maryana Vollstedt's The Big Book of Casseroles. You will find 250 ways to simplify your weekly meal planning. The properly deployed casserole is economical of both time and money. Anyone living on a family budget--with a family--but eating according to a take-out lifestyle is going to love this book.
Jambalaya is a casserole. So is Coq au Vin. So is classic Hungarian Goulash. But let us not forget Turkey Tetrazzine. Or maybe we should forget. Maybe it's the Turkey Tetrazzines of the world made with leftover dried-out Thanksgiving turkey coming at us after the days of turkey soups and turkey sandwiches and turkey salads that have given the word casserole the kind of odor we look for behind the refrigerator. While Vollstedt's version of Turkey Tetrazzine doesn't ask for a can of cream of mushroom soup, and while it is made from fresh ingredients, the result is still going to be the same.
And that's one of the problems with The Big Book of Casseroles. It's so big, the demands of coming in with 250 recipes are so great, that classics of the genre that would be better off left to foggy memory are rejuvenated for another generation of unfortunate diners. The other problem is how the definition of casserole gets stretched by the author. Any substance covered with another and baked in an oven appears to be a casserole. When is baked fish a casserole and when is it simply baked fish? Such are the questions raised by Vollstedt's choices.
The book covers a lot of ground. Chapters include those on "Basics" (as in white sauce), "Seafood Casseroles," "Poultry Casseroles," "Meat Casseroles," "Vegetable Casseroles," "Baked Pastas," "Grain and Legume Casseroles," "Gratins," and "Low-Fat Casseroles." There are no dessert casseroles.
Vollstedt shows you where the casserole has been, and where it is. Use The Big Book of Casseroles as a launching pad for your own creative endeavors. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Bubbling cheese, golden bread crumbs, tender vegetables, and succulent meats - what's not to like about casseroles? Comfort food just doesn't get any cozier, or more convenient. Now, thanks to Maryana Vollstedt, busy cooks don't have to call up Mom in order to make delicious one-dish meals for family and friends. The Big Book of Casseroles boasts over 250 recipes (including low-fat and vegetarian dishes), plus handy planning, freezing, and storage tips. For hot-from-the-oven dinners equally at home in the dining room or on the kitchen table, cooks need look no further than The Big Book of Casseroles, because serious comfort food never goes out of style.

Nice and easy!.......2007-04-07
This is a great cookbook with easy recopies that everyone in my family will eat. It is rare to find a cookbook where every recipe you make is a winner but this book is the one.
Awesome!!!.......2005-10-13
So many yummy casseroles. We LOVE this cookbook and use it all the time.
Buy it for the TURKEY (or chicken) TETRAZZINE recipe!.......2004-10-26
I have to admit that this book isn't exactly the type of "casserole" book I thought it would be either (as another reviewer stated regarding the non-use of canned soups etc) but I am still quite happy with it. The Turkey (or Chicken) Tetrazzine recipe is so creamy and delicious that I recommend buying it for that recipe alone! I have only tried one other recipe from the book so far and that was "Seafood Lasagna". It was sort of expensive to make and My Husband liked it and I did not. I thought it tasted too fishy BUT,I used canned crab meat instead of fresh and that could have been the reason for that. After scanning the rest of the recipes and ingred. lists, I do look forward to trying some of the other recipes in the book very soon.
Casseroles, huh?.......2003-09-14
I thought I would be getting a cookbook that included easy recipes. You know the kind, where you put all the ingredients in the casserole and turn on the heat! Not so here, for many of the recipes. Many require you to cook various ingredients before you put them in the casserole to be baked. Extra work for busy people. I must say, though, that many of the recipes are tasty.....just not timely.
Additionally, several just did not work out, eventhough I followed the directions to a "T". Did they test all these recipes first? They tended to be short on moisture and long on dryness. That being said, there is enough good stuff in this book to recommend it.....just use your head. If it sounds like it will be dry, add more moisture to begin with!
Not a cookbook for beginners.
A non-casserole cookbook.......2003-06-24
I have been looking for good casserole cookbooks for some time, and was delighted to find so many 5 stars for this one. For me, it was far from a 5-star rating.
When I do a Tuna Noodle Casserole, I don't expect to start from scratch, cooking a white sauce, beforehand. Can of Mushroom Soup is a no-no in this book, as are other can quickies. This book is devoted to the concept of healthy from scratch--- which is okay. However, the author has completely lost the fact that for many cooks, not all canned goods are bad -- especially when they save time in getting family meals out on time.
My personal peeve: There are many Tex-Mex dishes in this book, which is fine. However, they are the Oregonian's version of what Tex-Mex is. Kidney beans abound, a Tex-Mex no-no. Black beans are also specified, which is okay. But pinto beans, the Tex-Mex favorite are completely missing.
In addition, although the author mentions several different grains in one paragraph, there is no variety in her recipies. Rice and pasta are all that you find, with an ocasional use of yellow corn meal.
Buy this book if you love one-pot dishes for serving. But beware--- you will be using several pots before you are through, preparing ingredients--- instead of the old-time use of cans or other ready-to go ingredients.

Siberian Huskies for Dummies.......2007-09-27
Siberian Huskies for Dummies is an awesome book, it was very helpful indeed. Its not just for dummies though which is even better. It is very helpful for those of us who need a few points in the right direction. It is very detailed and explains things well. The book has some beautiful colour photos too. It has been my bible over the last week or so. I highly recommend that potential husky owners, or even the old ones, buy this book...it will help you out greatly.
a must have!.......2007-07-05
This is a real must have for anyone who is thinking about buying a Siberian Husky. Without this book, a first time husky owner will be left in the dark as to how to train this delightfully stubborn, eternally inquisitive, boundlessly energetic and all around fabulous breed of dog!
Top notch despite the name........2007-06-08
I recommend this book to all of my new owners and especially anyone that adopts a rescued Siberian. The book is easy to read and well explained. Some Siberian books out there drag on about topics you don't need to know causing the owner to put the book down. New Siberian owners need to read the book from cover to cover; best done before they bring their dog home. You will be much better prepared for your little ball of fluff and cuteness. Hopefully being better prepared will dis wade perspective puppy owners who really won't get along with the breed after they loose the cute puppy phase.
Think before you buy. They are a 13-15 year project and they don't get easier.

Redwood Siberians
Siberian Huskies for Dummies Review.......2007-02-16
This was a good introductory book for new Husky owners who want to learn all about their temperament and how to care for them. Training techniques were very useful; although be advised that it takes time to train a puppy. We found out quickly that Siberians (as the book says) are very playful and have lots of energy. Tiring them out will ensure a good nights rest for parents.
Get this book first - and read others if you still have questions. One-on-one experience with your new Siberian is the most valuable training tool.
Learning about the Siberian .......2007-01-17
I have a young Siberian with 1/2 Golden Reteriver. After reading this book, I was able to understand, while in training classes, she was so good at tasks, but very stubborn on others - that is the Husky trait. The other traits, of affection, quickness, hardly any barking, less the doggy smell when she gets wet, the ability to be in tune with young children and and ability to play with dogs, still amazes me. She loves the outdoors, but enjoys inside as much. Because, she has high energy and requires at lot of walking, playing, etc.,every day, rain, snow, sleet (her favorites)it is such a joy to be with her. So just a reminder, this type of dog takes a lot of work - as the book states. Training, should start as soon as possible, it takes time, especially with a husky, who has a mind of its own makes a happier dog.

Book Description
The largest film industry in the world after Hollywood is celebrated in this expanded and updated reference work. Covering the full range of Indian cinema the new edition includes vastly expanded coverage of mainstream productions from the 70s to the 90s, and additional material on the stars that have made their mark this decade. For the first time the work also includes a comprehensive index of names. There is no comparable guide to this generously illustrated volume that captures the incredible vitality and diversity of historical and contemporary Indian cinema.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely!.......2007-05-13
The book was still shrink-wrapped, and in excellent condition. It arrived very quickly as well.
time for a 3rd edition.......2006-06-22
The book is perhaps the most comprehensive listing of Indian movies that exists. Even in its earlier first edition. An update was needed simply because of the prodigious output of Bollywood movies each year. The typical number is 700.
From thumbing through the text, you can see the great and diverse nature of Indian society. Even simply in the languages that the movies span. Many stars' names will be unfamiliar to a non-Indian reader. But the book gives the impression that here is a huge world of its own, to rival anything in Hollywood.
This book creates its own conclusion. The 2nd edition came out in 99. Seven years ago. High time for the author to furnish a 3rd edition to encompass the intervening years.

The best book on the largest national film industry.......2002-03-24
The Indian film industry is the largest film industry in the world making over 700 films every year in over 20 different languages. This book is a compendium of some of the greatest names in the Indian film industry along with summaries of some of the best films made in India from as early as 1897. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it as a reference book. It is a must for any major library.
World's Most Prolific Film Industry.......2000-05-14
Reviewed by Amy Dadichandji Laly, For Pacific Reader, An Asian Pacific North American Review of Books, Spring 2000
The Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema by Ashish Rajadhyaksha and Paul Willemen is perhaps the most exhaustive compendium of reference material compiled as a resource guide for film students and movie buffs around the world. Published by Oxford University Press, this ambitious book is produced in association with the National Film Archive of India and the British Film Institute.
The scope of the new revised edition includes a capsule chronicle of Indian history and milestones in the Indian film industry; impressive filmographies of major directors, actors, music composers, lyricists and scenarists; plot synopses of films; film and name indices; and a thorough bibliography on the history of Indian cinema.
From 28 films produced in 1931 to 948 in 1990 and 793 in 1995, India boasts the world's largest national film industry with dream factories in Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, churning out Urdu-Hindi Bollywood musicals and important regional art films. Assamese, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujerati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Tamil and Telegu cinema is included in this paperback edition which covers a vast landscape from the birth of silent movies and talkies to mainstream productions and documentaries up to 1995.
Cinema is but another idiom of complex social, cultural, political, and historical influences especially in a country as diverse as India in its many regional languages, and ethnic and religious pluralism. The reader will find inspiring references to a number of art movements outside of the industry which informed filmmakers in their day. The entry on the Progressive Writers' Association, that brings into focus such stalwarts as Premchand, Ismat Chughtai, Ali Sardar Jafri, Krishan Chander, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Sadat Hasan Manto, among other luminaries, is especially invigorating. The Indian People's Theatre Association, Parsee Theatre, and political movements such as the Naxalite and Swadeshi, provide "elaborate cross-references to other, more directly, more cinematic entries."
The A to Z of this remarkable index of artistes starts with Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, a prodigious director and scenarist "mainly in the socialist-realist mode," to Zubeida, a real life princess, daughter of the Nawab of Sachin, who played the lead in "Alam Ara," India's first sound film released 14 March 1931. The Film index is chronological and starts with the release in 1912 of the 12 foot silent film "Pundalik" by P. R. Tipnis and N. G. Chitre, adapted from Ramrao Kirtikar's Marathi stage play about the Hindu saint. The last entry is a 158 minute megabudget Tamil musical, released in 1996 called "Kadhal Desum," written and directed by Kadir with Vineet, Abbas, and Tabu as lead players and music by A. R. Rehman. This is the only film entry for the year 1996.
The Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema is really a loving tribute to the amazing men and women who made the film industry the most prolific in the world.

A good introduction to the Maya...........1999-06-02
Mr. Gallenkamp's short book provides a good, informative introduction into the history of the Maya. He has included a synopsis of each era, focusing on the Classic; and he gives helpful details about the transitions from one age to the next. He also has written some fascinating chapters about the stories of the churchmen, explorers, and archeologists who first dared define the Maya: Landa, Stephens, Thompson, Ruz, et. al. In my nascent studies of the Maya, this short history has given me enough knowledge and information to feel comfortable while challenging my imagination and curiousity to continue on my journey.
Book Description
In a fascinating, behind-the-scenes, no-holds-barred autobiography, college football sensation Keyshawn Johnson, presumed savior of the New York Jets, offers a candid look at his life on the field and his rookie season in the NFL.Wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson was a high school and college football superstar in California and an All-American who led the USC Trojans to a Rose Bowl win. He was the first player chosen in the 1996 NFL Draft, and Adidas has crowned him their new national spokesperson, complete with a specially designed signature shoe. He is being heralded by the New York Jets as the savior who will lead them from the cellar to the Super Bowl. In this autobiography, Johnson gives readers a look at his first season in professional football -- the exhilaration of winning, the despair of losing, the fickle fans, the relentless New York media, the money, and the extraordinary pressure placed on you when you're 23 and expected to perform miracles on the gridiron.

Not for the faint of heart........2006-01-21
Great guy! Mr. Johnson is gutsy. He's not afraid to take on the sacred cows of the NFL. His numbers would tell you that he is an above-average receiver, while Keyshawon will tell you that he's the best receiver of all time. Who's right? I'm not sure, but reading this book will have you laughing in recognition. What a ride! His infectious smile will melt your heart and his double-talk unedited stream of consciousness logic will confound you. I only hope that Mr. Johnson will finish his career in Canada or possibly NFL Europe, which appears where he's headed. By 2007. my guess. Thank you Key! Stay hot and don't let bad stats get you down. You're a winner in my book. Which, I'm thinking of titling "Keyshawon Johnson: Genius and Scholar."
Keyshawn just trips me out.......2004-03-18
First of all let me start off by saying that i'm not the biggest fan of Keyshawn, as a matter of fact he is probably my least favorite NFL player, I always found him to be arrogant, and this book just proved my point even more. The whole book he complains that he is not being paid enough, he hates on his coaches. When he gets the ball, I have yet soon him to put up the numbers he claims he can get. I always wondered why Shawn King was benched, even though he led tampa bay pretty far the season he started, I was not surprised to hear rumors that keyshawn had something to do with it. He proved in this book that its all about the money for him, not the love of the game. If I was a coach I would not want him on my team. The only thing I liked what Mr. Johnson had to say, especially with the new ruled that was pass allowing guys to enter the draft to play football without playing college football, is that there is nothing like playing college football. Again, this is just my opinion of Mr.JOhnson, I could be totally wrong, he could be the most humble player in the NFL.
understated, bold, brilliant.......2003-09-11
Keyshawn Johnson's memoir, Just Give me the Damn Ball, is a chronicle of one man's journey to understand himself. The "Ball" as every reader of Johnson's prose understands, is not an actual leather ball, but a metaphor for the unnameable phatom that evades all of us, and the thing that can give us, if we could just get our hands on it, a true spiritual balance that could once and for all stop the longing we all feel and that some people attribute to our being made in the image of a creator to satisfy this creater's longing. Using a musical and lyrical style, he paints a portrait of the difficulties and obstacles faced by many of our young men in this country today. And he pulls no punches; make no mistake, Keyshawn writes like he plays: often dropping the "ball", but rarely failing to dwell in those small moments of triumph. While the narrative is first person, the voice Johnson achieves can give an impression of almost total detachment. He describes his battles as uphill conquests, relaying little detail other than those of his own ability to catch the "ball", though we all know no one can hold on to the ball forever. Johnson understands this, though he never comes to the point where he feels comfortable saying it. The idea that one thing, the ball in this case, can satisfy a being, one made of skin and nerves and thick red blood, is nothing new, but Johnson is able to breath life into it by creating a world where we, while, at our core, understanding that the grasp of one object could never satisfy our depths, the pursuit of this object could give a life purpose and, ultimately, could satisfy the pointed ends of the "ball" which would only leave the middle, and though the middle could never be satisfied, the pursuit of it all, the endless journey we put ourselves in, is one that will one day be rewarded. But when will we know for sure?
A must.......2000-10-08
while i'm a big time Bills Fan i give Keyshawn Johnson madd Props for this Very Honest&Open Book.it details a Season&the Politics involved in the NFL.I'M Pulling for The Bills Vs Tampa Bay in The Superbowl.THe JEts were Dumb for Letting KeyShawn go.after what he had to deal with Growing up, The NFL is like Sesame Street by Comparison.
Big Ups to Keyshawn.......2000-04-12
Keyshawn brings the funk in this astonishing literary triumph. I laughed; I cried -- it was better than "Cats." It's clear Keyshawn is misunderstood -- he has the eye of the tiger and heart of a champion, and he can't be faded. If you are seeking the 4-1-1 on the real, G, this is the book for you. Mad props to Keyshawn and a shout out to all the J-e-t-s Jets Jets Jets.
