Book Description
Kenrick Brimley, the state prison's official gigolo, hangs over a lava pit on trial for his life in a strange land. He will reveal the course of his life one misguided step at a time for his captors. From his romance with serial arsonist Leena Manasseh to his lurid angst-affair with a lesbian music diva, from his ascendance as unlikely pop icon to otherworldly encounters, the one constant truth is that he's got no clue what he's doing. As unrelenting as it is original, Last Burn in Hell is John Edward Lawson at his most scorching intensity, serving up sexy satire and postmodern pulp with his trademark day-glow prose. The Director's Cut includes: deleted scenes, alternate ending, photo stills, remastering for more enjoyable viewing, and more!

Prison life, Mexico, Pop stardom, and WEIRDNESS..........2007-09-11
You know those crime movies you stumble upon late at night? The ones that were made (you assume) somewhere in the late 1990s? There's lots of action, backstabbing, double crossing, and sex? It's the movies that usually star some B actors you see everywhere but can't name. You know the type. The ones that aren't art films or heavy-handed attempts at making a "serious" film but rather fun crime romps through the desert, through Mexico, in and out of dangerous situations? Sexy women, strong men, strong women and action. Lots of action. Well... this is what LAST BURN IN HELL is like.. except the plot is warped with a keen sense of weirdness.
The feel of the novel reminds me of those films (which I love). Like a cross between TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M., RED ROCK WEST, ... and other such neo-noir films.. except LAST BURN IN HELL (director's cut!) has a sense of humor.. and a sense of the bizarre that'll satisfy fans of the odd, the surreal, and the strange.
I won't go into the director's cut angle. Actually, okay, I will. It's a gimmick but a good one. Deleted scenes, alternate ending, and even a soundtrack (well, no, you can't really LISTEN to it but still..).
I'm fairly sure that this is John Edward Lawson's first novel. If it is, well, then pat yourself on the back for even considering reading this. It's exciting, funny, weird, and fast-paced. All good ingredients for an entertaining read.
PROS:
Humor. It's funny.. but not really absurd funny (well, not too much). It takes a lot of shots at pop culture and that makes for some good laughs.
Organization. There are little chapters and blurbs here and there (like a top 10 US singles chart.. which ties in later with the story). They're clever and funny.
Plot. The story moves along and the reader encounters many different characters in many places. If this was a movie, it'd be one where you wouldn't be bored for a minute.
CONS:
Confusion. Especially towards the end. I'm guessing that because the author writes a lot of poetry, he may be use to setting the stage using obscure imagery. That works in poetry but in fiction, it can sometimes make it difficult for the reader to figure out just what is really going on. I don't consider myself an unintelligent person but by the end, I wasn't too sure what exactly happened. I get the gist of it.. but there are just some details and events that confused me. Again, some people may not feel this way. Regardless, it shouldn't stop you from buying and reading this book.
CONCLUSION:
You should read this book. It's fun and entertaining as hell. The fact that it says "Director's Cut" should clue you in to the fact that it flows like a movie albeit one with some weird twists and turns. The set-up is original; the characters are original and/or humorously based on real-type people.
This is a "bizarro" book that you shouldn't miss.
Forget all you know or think you know.......2007-06-12
Okay--forget for a second that John Edward Lawson is a fantastic writer. Forget that he's assisted in the pioneering of fringe and unusual literature. Forget, too, that his fiction is capable of making you physically recoil in horror one second and eliciting uncontrollable laughter from you the next. For a second, despite all that, let's focus on this book.
The story of a gigilo in a women's prison--when it was originally published, it had everything you'd think such a story would have. Here, the "Director's Cut," plays out like a special edition DVD, replete with bonus scenes, behind-the-scenes, alternate endings, and even a soundtrack (that probably WON'T play in your CD player). Lawson has taken creativity to a whole new level, insisting that the publishing industry as a whole stand up and take notice. The George Orwell of our time, John Lawson illuminates the new direction of fiction...then punches it square in the face.
A fun read -- with extras!.......2007-06-07
Kenrick Brimley (call him "Ken" or "Rick" but never "Kenrick" -- and he's no relation to that other Brimley who "eats the oatmeals") has a job you didn't hear about at the high school Job Fair. He works at the local women's prison as a sort of conjugal consultant, offering Death Row residents one final night of pleasure before the state kills them. The closest thing he has to a long-term relationship is with Leena, a convicted arsonist whom he has visited multiple times due to the various postponements of her execution.
Last Burn in Hell: Director's Cut is a newly expanded edition of the first novel (and reportedly the first of a series) by John Edward Lawson -- publisher, editor, author, and Bram Stoker Award-nominated poet (for The Troublesome Amputee). Just like the special edition DVDs of your favorite films, this book offers deleted scenes, an alternate ending (that lets the reader choose between "into the sunset" and "final confrontation" styles), a soundtrack to assemble, promotional stills, and more features that make it a must-have even for those who already have the original edition of Last Burn in Hell.
Lawson tells the story as a modern-day pulp-style adventure, with Brimley going from one implausible situation to another in rapid succession (see David Dodge's The Last Match for a good example of the style). We can only sit back and watch as Brimley goes from prison guard to Death Row gigolo, from pop star hanger-on to movie-set masseur, and from the inadvertent next big rap superstar to the inadvertent instigator of a rash of suicides.
Brimley's strange adventure itself would be enough to make Last Burn in Hell: Director's Cut a fun read, but the author also satirizes the style and himself in the process: he's quite aware of how unbelievable the whole thing is (and especially how his character is going through all too familiar fictional situations), and embraces it with fervor. But instead of seeming cliched and trite, it all adds up to a skewed kind of originality.
A few political statements worm their way into the story, but they're presented with a good deal of humor -- as if to say Don't take me too seriously ... but pay attention! -- that makes them go down easy. John Edward Lawson is very much a man of ideas (one need only read his poetry to understand that), and Last Burn in Hell: Director's Cut shows that not only is he constantly coming up with new ones, but he is also unlikely to run out of them anytime soon.
[A final note: Though it would be easy to slap a label on it based on Lawson's prior work (especially his appearance in The Bizarro Starter Kit), don't call this book bizarro. Lawson has used the picaresque method, very familiar to the mainstream, to tell his story, and Last Burn in Hell: Director's Cut is really no stranger than, say, John Irving's early novels. In fact, it would very likely appeal to fans of The World According to Garp, and it deserves that large and diverse audience.]
"A Punch Line Aimed at Your Chin . . .".......2007-05-15
Without a doubt, John Edward Lawson is what Friedrich Nietzsche would have called an "Ubermensch" ("overman," or "superman") of the written word. Last Burn in Hell is a nonstop romp in a bizarre world of a man who has one of the best, and at the same time, worst jobs possible. His landscape is fresh, his strokes are perfect, and the final product is a wonderfully mastered piece of bizarro fiction that will leave you enthralled. You will be left craving more work of Lawson.
Last Burn in Hell: Director's Cut is s stunning piece of literary creativity; and original endeavor that is both entertaining and genius: a novel written in the format of a DVD.
Director's Cut includes the original novel Last Burn in Hell, along with Bonus Features: the Soundtrack, Deleted Scenes, an Alternative Ending, and Previews. To top it off, this one even comes with "errors" on the disc.
Last Burn in Hell: Director's Cut is a fresh take on the mundane format of the novel. John Edward Lawson has given birth to a greatly needed renegade with a push toward progress and "A punch line aimed at your chin . . . ."

A rather bizarre adventure..........2005-09-08
4.5/5 Stars
Perhaps the greatest layer of Last Burn is its portrayal of modern pop culture, which is both hilarious and startling in its utterly absurd yet honest nature. And yes, this book does have layers.
To break things down more easily:
Plot: Takes so many twists and turns, yet through it all, Last Burn stays focused.
Characters: Definitely different than those in nearly every book I've read, shows that books of such a style can succeed with characters more often seen...in prison...or on the covers of the latest gossip magazines.
Writing: If only all modern writers had styles as fresh...unfortunately, very few do.
All in all, Last Burn in Hell is a must read for fans of bizarro, horror, science fiction, or even beat writers such as Ginsberg and Kerouac. Strangely, it seems to bring all of these together to form a bizarre adventure that also functions, perhaps even more poignantly, as a social satire.
Biggest Complaint: I'm not a fan of the overall cover design, but that's as negative as I can get about this book.

Book Description
Halloween Night, 1954. A young, film-obsessed scriptwriter has just been hired at one of the great studios. An anonymous investigation leads from the giant Maximus Films backlot to an eerie graveyard separated from the studio by a single wall. There he makes a terrifying discovery that thrusts him into a maelstrom of intrigue and mystery -- and into the dizzy exhilaration of the movie industry at the height of its glittering power.

Pure Whimsy.......2007-01-10
Bradbury can be whimsical -- and even silly -- at times. He has a bent for humor, and it is apparent in this book. Undoubtedly it is based on his movie script-writing experiences and his work with his friend, Ray Harryhausen. Yet, overall, it failed to absorb my attention as much as his other, more sinister (noir) works. It's a nice addition to your library if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Bradbury fan. I passed my copy along to someone after reding it, as I also did with "Let's All Kill Constance," a title related to this one.
Charmed, I'm Sure.......2005-05-10
It's a sweet and simple fact of life: some people will like it, and some people will not. However, many pros and cons of this mystery novel are defiant and absolute. This novel contains well developed, attractive characters complete with their own pet peeves and since of humor. Also, there are remarkable philosophical questions with ample room for discussion and debate such as the "going home again" theme and the symbolism of the "another tale of two cities" within one city. However, some unappealing aspects of this novel included the fact it wasn't that much of a mystery. The clues, hints, and evidence given by Bradbury were obvious gestures to the truth and conclusion of the story. Other minor negative details such as one or two lacking characters and poor transitions withheld two stars from this mystery book. Otherwise, many compliments and much respect to Ray Bradbury. Charmed, I'm sure.
Very enjoyable.......2003-11-10
I remember an old tag line for a copy of The Martian Chronicles I had indicating that there was no writer quite like Ray Bradbury and that still holds true today. While certainly not in the upper echelon of his past classics, A Graveyard for Lunatics is certainly a page turner that keeps hold of your interest from start to finish. Bradbury uses Hollywood as a vessel for the much larger themes of death, fame, and religion and wraps it in a murder mystery. Unfortunately, and the reason I withhold a star, is that it becomes a little too easy to figure out a huge piece of the puzzle and knowing or assuming that as you read takes something away from the suspense. That being said, the plot is still very tightly constructed and the characters are, for the most part, very well drawn. A nice piece of work from the master.
Bradbury continues the magic, this time in Hollywood........2002-02-22
Setting this novel during the glory days of Big Studio Hollywood, in which he himself was an earnest young screenwriter, Ray Bradbury sets out to create a murder mystery in which a twenty years-dead body is found on a ladder leaning against a wall between a graveyard and the movie studio next door. Over-the-top Hollywood characters and wannabes, "beasts" and monsters, and faux settings, such as Notre Dame, Calvary, and even the speaker's grandparents' house in Green Town, Illinois, fill this book with the illusions in which the film industry excels, while the machinations of ego-driven moguls provide motivations for murder.
No one should read this novel expecting a hard-boiled mystery, however. Bradbury's obvious love of people and of life itself is so heartfelt and overwhelming that it makes any sense of toughness unbelievable--and there are many other reasons to enjoy this book. Grounded by Midwestern values, fundamentally decent, and lacking the ego which seems to drive the rest of the industry, Bradbury shines in describing a mad Hollywood, "where great elephant ideas go to die. A graveyard for lunatics," where men so dedicate their lives to the creation of illusions that they often lose sight of reality. His wacky imagination flourishes, and it is clear that despite his sometimes flippant, tongue-in-cheek observations, his irony, and his criticism of Hollywood excess, that he loves the place and the exotic characters he meets there.
With imagery and descriptions that bring to life every aspect of studio activity, trenchant philosophical observations inserted casually (almost as throwaways), self-deprecating humor, and visions of plain folks challenging the studio bigwigs, Bradbury's mystery ambles toward an almost amiable conclusion. For the lover of Bradbury, this is another chance to share his visions and his enthusiasm for a life lived honestly. Most readers will undoubtedly share the feelings of Constance, who tells speaker/Bradbury, "How lucky to be inside your skin...Don't ever change. We stupid doomsayers, cynics, monsters laugh, but we need you. Otherwise, Merlin dies, or a carpenter fixing the Round Table saws it crooked, or the guy who oils the armor substitutes cat pee. Live forever. Promise?" Mary Whipple
Fans of Hollywood History - Rejoice!.......2000-06-30
WOW! From the moment I saw the cover winking at me in the Cal State Fullerton bookstore 12 years ago, this has been my favorite book af all time! Mr. Bradbury mixes up a concoction of murder, mystery, and the Golden Age of movies and studio heads to delight the reader. His character development and authenticity ring true to anyone who has ever seen a silent film or a great science fiction epic of the 1950's. I just can't say enough about this book! It is one of the few that I take the time to go back and read over and over again like a chance meeting of old, comfortable friends (and according to my grandfather, Herb Hinthorne, Mr. Bradbury used to be the kid in rollerskates all over Hollywood - he often skated into Henry's, an old restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. where my grandfather hung out with his waitress-mom, looking for the movie stars!). Get your hands on a copy of this book, and enjoy!

Time Travelers, Revolutionaries and Great Detectives.......2006-06-23
In _More Issues at Hand_, James Blish states that he admires Mack Reynolds for his cosmopolitanism and the bold way in which he tackles controversial political topics but regrets that Reynolds is overly rough and hasty in his writing. There is some justice for this view. But it is fair to say that when Reynolds is at his best, there is a solid craftsmanship to his stories. And so it is in this collection of twenty-two stories. There are some decidedly minor stories here-- "Down the River," "Come in, Spaceport," "Good Indian," "No Return From Elba," "The Business as Usual" and "Albatross"-- but they are not badly written. They are simply one-punch stories without a lot of complexity or depth.
In an introduction to the collection, Barry Malzberg recommends that the reader start with "Compounded Interest," a small classic of a time travel story and an excellent example of Reynolds in top form. There are also a series of serious political stories: "Freedom," "Pacifist," "Spaceman on a Spree," "Revolution," "Fad," "Survivor," "Utopian," "Subversive,"and "Second Advent." All are well written, thoughtful and worth your attention-- especially the first three-- but they sometimes repeat themselves in their basic plot.
Some of the stories are in a more fantastic or humorous vein: "Prone" (the one about the accident prone space cadet), "The Adventure of the Extraterrestrial" (the one about the geriatric Sherlock Holmes), "Earthlings Go Home" (a travel guide to Mars originally written for _Rogue_), the sardonic "Burnt Toast," and the gentle "Your Soul Comes C.O.D."
All in all, an excellent sampling of Reynolds's short fiction, with entertaining and informative story introductions by the author.

Book Description
You probably feel like you know everything about your cat and his needs, but chances are there's a lot you aren't aware of. For example, did you know that the food you feed him every day has nowhere near enough nutritional value, or that he may have chronic tooth decay? Have you ever been told that the essence of the flower holly can help him be less jealous, or that a massage can lessen his arthritis pains?
The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats is an introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural methods, treatments, and foods that are now available for cats. Veterinarians from around the country offer information and opinions to help you determine what's best for your cat. In addition to showing you how to develop a healthy diet for your pet, these doctors will tell you about alternative treatments such as homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, and herbal medicine.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource!.......2007-06-17
I own many natural/alternative healing books for cats, and this is the ONLY one that has post-its sticking out everywhere that I've saved reference points to return to. Also, after cross-referencing with other books, it is almost always this book whose advice I follow with 99% success. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone's pet library.
Very helpful and Informative.......2007-03-31
My vet recommended this book to me to help aid the diet of my adopted old diabetic/kidney diseased cat. It's an eye opener... some of the information about pet food is shocking! This book has been so helpful laying out your basic health care, lists healthy food recommendations, food recipies. and great holitistic help with ailments. My youngsters are getting a much healthier start with me just being better informed. Highly recommended!
Garlic for Cats?.......2005-07-21
As one of the veterinarians who contributed to this book, I was interested to see some of the comments, especially about garlic.
Garlic is in the onion family and does contain a small amount of the onion's toxic ingredient (thiosulphate). While I have seen red blood cell damage from as little as one meal of baby food containing onion powder, I have not seen such problems with garlic. In fact, garlic is a common ingredient in many pet foods and supplements, usually in small amounts as a flavoring agent. For instance, I have recommended Missing Link for my feline patients for many years; it contains garlic, but I haven't seen any damage from it. Cats being cats, they are far less likely than dogs to eat a food that contains too much garlic.
The article from TC Instincts actually says: "*continued* use of garlic or onions can *eventually* result in hemolytic anemia." This suggests, as has been my experience, that it takes long-term feeding of a significant amount of garlic to cause anemia. As with most things, the old saying "Moderation in all things" is well heeded in this case. (The reviewer also states that dogs can handle garlic and onions; that statement is dangerously false. Dogs are also susceptible to toxicity from these plants; onion toxicity is quite common in dogs.)
In holistic medicine, the fundamental principle is to tailor treatment to each individual animal. It still requires you to watch your pet closely, and to be alert to any changes in its condition. The holistic veterinarian depends on the person who sees the animal every day, to monitor each treatment for any positive or negative effects. This goes for any modality, including herbs and homeopathy, both of which can be very harmful if not used properly.
Anitra Frazier's book is terrific, but bear in mind it is 15 years old. She recommends 20% of the diet to be grains; today, we know that cats do not handle grains well, and a high grain content (such as is common in dry foods) contributes to obesity, diabetes, bladder problems and other diseases. She also highly recommends garlic as a supplement. So while her book contains much good advice, you shouldn't just follow it blindly without balancing it against other sources of information, and constantly assessing your animal's response to each change.
In the same way, this book contains a great deal of valuable information. As new information becomes available, some bits may become outdated. However, to dismiss the entire book because of one (controversial) item is really throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Regarding garlic for cats.......2004-10-19
I was browsing around for natural cat health information, and read the review below, titled "Disappointing".
I just found out today that cats can't tolerate garlic when I took my very sick, very anemic cat into the vet and realized that I may have contributed to the problem! I've used Anitra Frazier's book "The New Natural Cat" like a bible for years, and it is a good book, but maybe she needs to revisit the garlic issue, which she highly recommends as a treatment for cats.
I've just been to the website the reviewer mentioned, http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/garlic.php, and it seems to corroborate what my vet was telling me today - and i was very unwilling to hear.
The other reviewers seem to love the book, but I'd say that if you really want a great book on taking care of a cat, get Anitra Frazier's book instead -- just don't give garlic to your cat -- at least not till there's more information about it.
Disappointing!.......2004-02-15
Of the dozens of books I've purchased online, this book has the distinction of being the first one I've ever returned. Having read the comments of other reviewers, I expected this to be a cutting-edge remedy and nutrition guide. Instead, I found it to be a haphazard collation of miscellaneous remedies offered by a number of different vets. These remedies lack adequate detail on indications, contraindications, preparation, dosage and treatment, and at least one of the remedies I looked up was simply a promotion of the vet's own product. Homeopathic medicines were suggested as blanket remedies for things such as intestinal parasites, with no consideration for the complexities of homeopathic prescribing.
In this book, garlic is suggested as a flea remedy; garlic ought never to be given to cats as it (and onions, shallots etc.) can cause potentially fatal hemolytic anemia. Here is one of many internet sources for this information: http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/garlic.php
There was at least one remedy for dogs in this book. Is this not a book for cats? Cats and dogs have very different needs and tolerances; for instance, dogs can tolerate garlic and cats cannot.

Great for beginers and novice sellers.......2002-11-17
This is a great book for those that are looking to collect barbie and don't know how to judge a doll or what problems they might have. They will not have to learn with an expensive horrible experience.
IT is good for new sellers because it presents them with all the questions that they will have to answer. AND finally tells them that GREEN EAR is not REALLY completely fixable and that this decreases the value of the doll!
A mistake many novice sellers commit. Writing on their description "green ear, but I have heard it can be fixed"....
Great book for beginners. Excellent Ebay sellers! A+A+A+++++.......2002-05-01
This book would be wonderful for many who are in to loving Barbie. It gives wonderful tips on collecting.... wonderful for beginners!!!
Extremely basic information.......2001-05-22
I checked this book out of the library and that was a relief, because I did not waste $12.95. I found nothing new or special in this book. There are plenty of other Barbie books out there that may be a bit more expensive but you will get your money's worth if you spend an extra $10-15 on one of them.
There is no price guide, no list of the vintage outfits available, and only 16 pages of color photos. (16 pages isn't very impressive when you've seen Barbie books that contain hundreds and hundreds of color photos.)
I gave this book 2 stars because it's fairly inexpensive and it could be helpful to a complete novice who has never read _anything_ about Barbie collecting. There are still better, more informative options for absolute beginners. A lot of the advice in here is generic common sense and BASIC information that could apply to any collectible hobby.
great for novice barbie collectors.......2001-03-13
this book is compact and informational. it features photographs and plenty of tips and direction to beginners. The author includes cleaning, how to buy, and a beginning awareness on the world of barbie collecting

Fun and nutritious!.......2002-11-01
This books is both useful and fun, but in an unusual way: It combines solid business planning information with a lot of information on how to set up your shop. I have read a number of woodworking/business books, and they are dull, not enough jigs and tool talk. Here you get both in an integrated way that makes each strand more useful: All the technology has a purpose.
Really a unique way of packaging a woodworking book. Of course the ultimate lesson is that you should drop all that woodworking nonsense and like Mr. Tolpin become a nationally recognized writer of coffee table books. They're good too, but I miss him.
Oh, by the way, the focus is a two car garage sized cabinet shop.
Do you yearn to be a woodworker.......1998-02-04
This book is an absolute must for anybody who wants to be a cabinetmaker or own a small shop. Of course you could work 20 years and get this information first hand, the hard way. Mr Tolpin --Hat's off--- Great job, Thank you very, very much

Book Description
A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the sumptuous, extravagant or just plain whimsical homes of creative souls past and present
Some are filled to bursting with leopardskin cushions and gilt mirrors. Others have an indefinably quaint, old-world charm all their own. Some are dimly lit by candles, while one or two are brightly illuminated by the neon glow of strings of fairy lights. Whatever the inspiration behind them, the homes featured in Extravagance: the World of Whimsical Interiors bear the stamp of the people who live there-people who have decided to make their home a reflection of their own personality and passions. From Vanessa Bell to the outrageous French artists Pierre et Gilles, from Sigmund Freud's Viennese apartments to the home of photographer Turbeville in New Mexico, Extravagance: the World of Whimsical Interiors explores the private tastes of these designers, artists and thinkers who shape the world. Also featured are the charmingly eccentric homes of unknown devotees of design: a butcher who, on his days off, is a specialist in sixteenth-century art; a Greek businessman who bought his own French chateau to decorate as his whims dictated.
Fashion journalist Claude Berthod's text lovingly details the particular features of each home, while the stunning photographs of Roland Beaufre will provide inspiration for all those who believe that good taste and design flair are intrinsically individual qualities.

A Kid's Book for Grown-ups.......2000-04-22
A perfect balance of story, illustration, and book design. It takes as much time to read these hilarious, melancholy, knowing portraits as it does to contemplate the intricate and cynical drawings that accompany them, each based on the twelve signs of the zodiac. The pleasures of this 88 page book come too soon to their end. Characters are vivid and may or may not be based on real art world figures, and they conform to astrological stereotypes in a surprisingly humane way--the performance artist who cheats on his check, the art dealer who can sell art to anybody-- but actors-- and the museum head whose father hid birds in his jacket. To quote from the delicious send up of the radical academic, a "fifty-something version of Ali McGraw in 'Love Story,'" Stardumb just might restore astrology as "a pre-enlightenment practice, totally untainted by its hegemony."

The Covenant with Black America

Book Description
Witness to the Truth tells the extraordinary life story of a grassroots human rights leader and his courageous campaign to win the right to vote for the African Americans of Lake Providence, Louisiana. Born in 1901 in a small, almost all-black parish, John H. Scott grew up in a community where black businesses, schools, and neighborhoods thrived in isolation from the white population. The settlement appeared self-sufficient and independent--but all was not as it seemed. From Reconstruction until the 1960s, African Americans still were not allowed to register and vote. Scott, a minister and farmer, proceeded to redress this inequality. Ultimately convincing Attorney General Robert Kennedy to participate in his crusade, Scott led a twenty-five year struggle that graphically illustrates how persistent efforts by local citizens translated into a national movement.
Told in Scott's own words, Witness to the Truth recounts the complex tyranny of southern race relations in Louisiana. Raised by grandparents who lived during slavery, Scott grew up learning about the horrors of that institution, and he himself experienced the injustices of Jim Crow laws. Without bitterness or anger, he chronicles almost one hundred years of life in the parish, including migrations between the two world wars, the displacement of African American farmers during the New Deal, and the shocking methods white southerners used to keep African Americans under economic domination and away from the polls. Chapter president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for more than thirty years and a recipient of the A. P. Tureaud Citizens Award, Scott embodied the persistence, strength, and raw courage required of African American leaders in the rural South, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. His story illustrates the contributions of local NAACP leaders in advancing the human rights movement.
Cleo Scott Brown, Scott's daughter, draws on oral history interviews with her father conducted by historian Joseph Logsdon as the basis for the book. She also uses personal papers, court transcripts, records of the East Carroll chapter of the NAACP, interviews with other East Carroll residents, family recollections, and her own conversations with her father to complete the biography.
Customer Reviews:
Thank You Cleo..........2005-09-13
I just finished this book and am so glad and elated that Cleo Scott Brown decided to document her father's story.
My great uncle is Francis Joseph Atlas, Sr., the other man who testified with Reverend Scott as well as the one who endured financial hardship just because he wanted to vote. My family has been in East Carroll Parish for centuries, and through this book, I have learned a ton of information that I did not have available to me. It also helps me a lot with my genealogical project.
This book was written wonderfully; there were many times I couldn't put it down because I just had to know what was going to happen next! I also enjoyed the perspective from which the story was told, and the righteous spirit that Reverend Scott held onto, even when it was extremely hard to do so.
Every African American owes it to themselves to read this.
An Historically Significant Book.......2005-04-11
I applaud Ms. Scott for compiling her father's interviews and writing this book, which has enormous historical significance. It is customary to read and hear about the heavy weights in the struggle for civil rights, such as Martin Luther King and Booker T. Washington. However, this book serves as a reminder that grass roots workers like John H. Scott represented pivotal forces in helping to bring about justice for African Americans. As a South Carolinian, I tend to read with greater frequency about historical events of places like Charleston and Savannah and Atlanta, GA. Reading about Louisiana broadened my knowledge and I was able to garner a history lesson from nearly every page.
It is unbelievable how steadfast John Scott and others were in fighting simply to be able to vote. Equally unbelievable are all of the atrocities perpetuated against them. But they persevered, and the story is very well told.
At a recent book signing in Charleston, SC, Ms. Scott told me that she is writing another book. I look forward to it.
Compelling history lesson that reads like a novel..........2004-11-07
The late John H. Scott and his daughter Cleo Scott provide a griping account of the life and experiences of a civil rights pioneer. The book makes something as bland as history, something engaging and entertaining. I learned a great deal from reading this book and enjoyed every minute. Looking forward the movie...
A great start.......2003-10-01
This book is the testament of a determined person who has raised the consciousness of a parish. He along with others refused to be refused a right that many of us take for granted today. From the Scott Scholarship to the visits Cleo Brown makes to Louisiana (thank you Tallulah for bringing her October 2003!), John H. Scott lives on. His words ring out pride in yourself and hope for your community. I am challenged to not let his and others' efforts go in vain. This book, which certainly has a place in (a certain book club), should be read by every student in the Delta area. They should know that great people can come from humble beginnings. Thank you John H. Scott Memorial fund for helping me through school and thank you Cleo Brown for compiling this book to help me through life.
Outstanding!!.......2003-03-24
The book is a must read for young and old, African Americans and Caucasians, especially anyone who grew up in the South. Rev. Scott is truly one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights era. We read a lot about Dr. King and others who lead marches and demonstrations, but the stories of those who stayed in the small towns and endured the daily humiliations of a racist society are little known. Cleo Brown is to be commended for bringing her father's story to a broader audience.
