Book Description
Set in strife-torn Guatemala City in the early 1980s, this sophisticated, quasi-comedic tale depicts the decline and near-fall of a prominent Guatemalan Jewish family. In the face of military rule, terrorism, and sabotage, Marcos learns the truth about his brother Aaron, only to find that sibling secrets can be every bit as dangerous as civil unrest.

Coming of age--at last--in the tropics.......2004-11-11
Marcos Eltaleph finds himself under a kind of house-or hospital-arrest at the start of Life in the Damn Tropics, restricted to his bed. In fact, the book begins and ends in bed, romps around the boudoir pretty frequently, draws a good number of ideas and plans from bed, but it's not a dream-world book. No, there's no magically shifting line here between levels of reality. What happens to and around Marcos Eltaleph is this-world-real, violent, irrational and passionate. Life in the Damn Tropics is a great read, spare and funny, sympathetic and justly satiric toward its struggling, naïve hero.
Any novel that begins with a character who wakes up reminds me of Kafka's story, but unlike Gregor Samsa, Marcos Eltaleph wakes up to find that not he but the world around him, Guatemala City of the early 1980s, has become nearly unrecognizable. Granted, Eltaleph has been living on a sinecure, cared for by his entrepreneurial brothers, and he reaches his mid-50s happily unaware of what it really takes to make a living. But he suffers mightily for his inattention-hemorrhoids (a reminder of what he thinks of himself?) are not the least of it-and the suffering does help him to refine his vision of his family, himself, and the culture in which he is truly a resident alien.
Specifically, two things cause Marcos distress. First, his brothers. They have provided for him and insured his naiveté, and they have made him their sap. Neither Aaron, with his prominent place in the Jewish community, nor David, president of the family business, has time to waste under house arrest, so Marcos is offered up, along with a significant bribe, as part of the incidental cost of doing business in Guatemala. No malice, just business. Second source of grief is Guatemala itself, and this, I think, is one of the novel's savviest inventions. Guatemala of tropical lowlands and high cloud forests is almost absent, but the jungle is present in every one the unanticipated cruelties, again, none personal. It's all business (even the politics) in the decayed, militaristic society, the deaths, the disappearances, the bombings, all as impersonal as being mauled by a jaguar or strangled by a creeper vine in the dense forest.
But Marcos is not so innocent that he fails to examine himself. He gets the message. Forced to begin managing his own affairs when the family business can no longer support him, he opens a nightclub. When he finds out that a bunch of generals and idealistic boys and a couple of business brains are using his place to plan another overthrow of the government, Marcos reckons his own semi-conscious role in the eruption of one of Guatemala's social volcanoes, and he takes action...at great cost. He moves with the purpose of a young man on a character-building quest, only this time it's a "bald, bare-butted fifty-three-year-old newborn," as Eltaleph describes himself, who does the growing. That irony alone makes Damn Tropics a really satisfying read.
dystopias in diaspora -- gallows humor prevails.......2003-02-23
Jewish diaspora narratives lend themselves quite readily to absurdism. Life is comprised of a concatenation of illogical events, sequential by chronology, but nothing else. The search for truth is subverted by the constant reminder that there is no truth, and that any of the tenets of essence that one might have employed to assure oneself of a bit of certainty in the world are utterly hollow.
Language is layered and mediated, worlds are polyphonous and dialogical, but there is no actual response, since several languages are employed simultaneously. Causality is in effect, but it is primitive, and meaningless, except in the construction of metaphor. Example: the consumption of raw turtle eggs lead to immediate, severe, violent food poisoning. However, this is also an echo of the existential response to nostalgia; the memories (submerged, sad, sweet) of the last time one ate turtle eggs.
Marcos Eltaleph, the protagonist, is hostage to the misdeeds of his brother, Aaron Eltaleph, who is under hospital arrest in Guatemala City, where he is suspected of double-dealing by Guatemalan officials. Marcos, forced into a position of loyalty that threatens to undermine the only way(s) he knows himself, begins to implode psychologically as the family scandal expands.
The energy of implosion is picaresque, and there is a sort of joy in the destruction of preconceived notions. Adrenaline is preferable to logical response. The things that have value are made valueless, including life, work, human invention. Aaron's venture into the nightclub business is a perfect example of this. It begins as a venture filled with promise, then turns into a gathering place for the Guatemalan military and heavy-hitters -- always dangerous in Central America.
Much of the narrative rests on the deliberate countering of family values and Jewish tradition. Marcos rebels, or perversely disregards, the core values of his family by having a Colombian prostitute as a girlfriend, by making deals with untrustworthy, highly venal partners, the Guatemalan dictatorship / mob.
Yet, there is a celebration of the eccentric, wily, and street-smart. The breakdown of rigid societal structures allows others to emerge with dionysian energy. Metamorphosis is possible.
The setting of Life in the Damn Tropics heightens contrasts between luxury "compound" vacations and the jungle around it. Jungle, dnager, invasion of body and self are ever-present metaphors for life in an absurd situation caught between competing interests.
Nevertheless, Guatemala, which is perhaps the quintessential dystopia -- an infernal inversion of Eden -- provides an anarchic, playful catalyst to life.

Friend to Keplians.......2007-09-18
Key of the Keplian (1995) is the first fantasy novel in the Secrets of the Witch World series. Eleeri is the only surviving member of Far Traveler's family. This great-granddaughter has a talent with horses and has learned everything he has tried to teach her about weapons, warfare and the history of her people. She would make a fine Nemunuh -- Comanche -- warrior.
Now Far-Traveler is dying. On his last day, the social worker comes once again to try to steal Eleeri away from her home. Her uncle is eagerly waiting to get his hands on her. While everything is ready for her escape, Eleeri is not willing to leave as long as Far Traveler is still alive. The old man steps outside, sings his death song, asks the gods to help her, and collapses in death.
Eleeri carries Far Traveler back to his pallet and arranges his body. Then she takes up her pack and leaves. She lays false trails and evades the helicopter, but the dogs are always on her trail. Finally, she breaks from cover and runs through the gate.
In this novel, Eleeri finds herself elsewhere on a grassy plain. She travels toward the mountains in the distance and then walks along the foothills to the south and then east. She finds scattered ruins and bodily remains that suggest some sort of warfare or banditry over a period of time. Then she hears the sound of battle and finds one man beset by three.
Cynan had already downed one bandit before Eleeri enters the battle, but has taken wounds of his own. Cynan is no stranger to battle, but the bandits are mounted. Then Eleeri enters the battle with her bow and slays both bandits.
Eleeri stays at Cynan's Hold for several seasons, learning the language and history of this new world. It has been some time since the shaking of the mountains by the Witches of Estcarp. Cynan has returned from his family refuge in Estcarp to die at home in Karsten, only to find himself faced with one last task.
Cynan teaches Eleeri swordcraft, but she already knows how to use bow and knife. He also teaches her reading, the local sign language and many other things about her new home. He takes her to his family shrine to Gunnora and the goddess welcomes Eleeri and grants her protection from the Dark. When all is prepared, Cynan sends her north and west into Escore.
In this story, Eleeri gains greater powers than her initial affinity for horses. She is now able to bond with her horses. As she travels toward Escore, she encounters a band of men about to kill a newborn foal and its mother.
Eleeri strongly objects to such killing, despite their tale of the horses being Keplians. She demonstrates the innocence of the foal with a talisman of Gunnora, but the men still object. Then Eleeri trades two of her horses for the two Keplians and convinces the mare to let her carry the wounded foal.
Eleeri is surprised to find the mare answering her in mind speech. Only then does she begin to understand that the mare is not a horse, but something greater. The mare is surprised to find Eleeri willing to touch her mind without terror.
Eleeri and the foal ride out of the village on her saddle pony, with the mare close behind. As they travel, Eleeri and the mare discuss the men left behind and decide that at least one will pursue them. The leader lost face when the mare followed her and he will want revenge. He also will covet the other horse and its equipment and supplies.
This story shows Eleeri gradually gaining the trust of the Keplian mare. It's hard to distrust someone who loves your colt as much as Eleeri does. The young colt returns the love and grows into a fine young stallion. Unlike other Keplian males, Hylan is kind and gentle unless provoked into a fight. Then his size and intelligence overwhelm his opponents.
Eleeri and the mare Tharna consider the differences between Hylan and other stallions and began to wonder about the effects of nurture on young Keplians. They begin to acquire pregnant mares and orphan foals. One violent colt teaches them caution, but their herd begins to grow.
This is a classic tale of the Witch World, even adding a touch of the Amerindian theme. Nonetheless, it lacks some of the fire and fury of the older works. Some of this probably comes from over familiarity with the series, but some also comes from the collaboration itself. The co-author is just not as great a storyteller. Yet this is still a good addition to the series.
Recommended for Norton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of Amerindian ways, women warriors, and a bit of romance.

Excellent addition to the Witch World series.......2005-08-03
I've loved Andre Norton's premise of finding a new life in another world via a gate ever since I read Witch World, the first and one of my favorite Witch World books. Eleeri is a great heroine; and her escape from a misguided social worker begins a great adventure, even as it recalls the time when helpless children were removed from their homes to be educated... And because she doesn't know how dangerous Keplians are, she rescues a mare and her foal, and then...
Andre Norton and fantasy lovers:.......2000-11-22
This was the first book I read of Andre Norton a few years ago. Since then I have been an great fan of Andre Norton and her Witch World series. In fact, I have even written a Witch World movie screenplay which I hope will someday get produced. All because of this book, the Key of the Keplian. It strangely makes you want to travel to some foreign land and hunt, and when the book ends, you wish there where more, which is exactly how novels should be. I highly recommend to both young and old readers of all tastes and flavours.
OUTSTANDING.......2000-06-25
I just got done reading this book. I was captured by the adventures waiting just on the next page. It was so good I couldn't bare to put it down. If you love fantasy, magical, and adventure books, this is a must for you! Eleeri, (the main character) travels into a witch world to escape her fate from the world she originated in. There she finds a friend who teaches her the ways of life in this magical new world. Then venture forth, she must, to a calling in the "east" area. What lies ahead is an adventure only author Andre Norton can describe. Untamable and Dark are the Keplians; or are they? To any creature in this world a Keplian means death. But Eleeri has a mind of her own. Determined to befriend these magnificent beasts, turn this world into the Light, destroy all Darkness, and be accepted as a daughter to the Light are just a few of the...oops, I can't tell you wether she does accomplishes them or not. To find out you'll have to read the book!
GREAT!.......2000-01-22
I loved it. Although I was disappointed in the following book. I love the pairing of Lyn McConchie and Andre Norton, while Andre Norton alone I find a tad bit dry,.....of course I've only started two, and maybe if I delve a little further I'll get excited,.....maybe.

Trouble Comes In A Bunch (Of Grapes!).......2002-11-20
Looking for a new planet to picnic on, Commander Toad and the crew of STAR WARTS descend to the planet and immediately discover that everywhere they step giant purple grapes sprout up. In no time at all, Commander Toad, Doc Peeper, Lieutenant Lily, and Mr. Hop are swallowed up by the giant purple grapes and are telling some of the worst grape jokes in the universe! And it looks like there's no way out!
Jane Yolen is an award-winning children's book author as well as a writer of adult science fiction and fantasy. She's earned the Caldecott-given for the most distinguished picture book, the Nebula-given to the most distinguished writing in the field of science fiction and fantasy, the Golden Kite-given by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the World Fantasy Award. She's written seven Commander Toad Adventures, including COMMANDER TOAD AND THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES, COMMANDER TOAD AND THE SPACE PIRATES, and COMMANDER TOAD AND THE BIG BLACK HOLE. With dozens of books written in many genres, Jane Yolen is a great author to introduce to young readers.
COMMANDER TOAD AND THE PLANET OF THE GRAPES is an absolute blast to read out loud to young readers or pre-readers. The short, descriptive sentences push the story along at a frantic and fun pace, and the color and black and white illustrations are great fun for a young audience.
With all the interest young kids today have in space-based programs on Cartoon Network, books like the Commander Toad series will bridge the gap between movies, video games, and the written word. Jane Yolen is an exemplary entertainer for young readers and parents willing to endorse the habit of reading.
The planet is allergic to frogs and toads!.......2001-02-07
This is another silly outer-space book in the Commander Toad series, which my sons, ages 4 and 8, thoroughly ENJOY. In _Planet of the Grapes_, the crew arrives on an unknown planet only to discover that it grows huges grapes the moment they touch their feet to its surface.
Due to a chance accident with a loaded syringe, Doc Peeper with the green grass hair discovers that the planet is allergic to *them*. It is Lieutenant Lily's sneezes which give him the clue. He was about to inject her with antihistamine, which is the reason for the syringe.
Complicated plot, lots of funny stuff. These books are enjoyable to both kids and adults.
Book Description
An original book on the craft of mixology is a rare gem. Gary Regan’s
The Joy of Mixology is such a gem, one whose genius lies in Regan’s breakthrough system for categorizing drinks that helps bartenders—both professionals and amateurs alike—not only to remember drink recipes but also to invent their own.
For example, once you understand that the Margarita is a member of the New Orleans Sour Family, you’ll instantly see that a Kamikaze is just a vodka-based Margarita; a Cosmopolitan follows the same formula, with some cranberry juice thrown in for color. Similarly, the Manhattan and the Rob Roy, both members of the French-Italian family, are variations on the whiskey-vermouth-bitters formula.
In this way Regan brings a whole new understanding to the world of cocktails and how to make them. Not only will you learn how to make standard cocktails, you’ll actually learn to feel your way through making a drink, thereby attaining the skills needed to create concoctions of your own. And as Regan explains methods for mixing drinks, how to choose bartenders’ wares and select spirits and liqueurs, and the origins of many cocktails, you’ll feel as though you’re behind the bar with him, learning from a master. Plus, his charming and detailed history of mixed drinks raises this far above the standard cocktail guide fare.
With more than 350 drink recipes,
The Joy of Mixology is the ultimate bar guide. Ground-breaking and authoritative, it’s a must-have for anyone interested in the craft of the cocktail.

Could be organized better.......2007-07-31
I liked the content of the book, however i wish it were organized by alcohol type not alphabetical. It makes it longer to find something you would actually drink.
hello..........2007-05-24
Great book, lots of information, a must have for anyone who appreciates and wants to learn more about cocktails.
More than a recipe book.......2007-02-16
I enjoy reading Regan's descriptions of cocktails, their recipes and histories, but also included are explanations about every aspect of the bartending craft. I appreciate his advice on tasting each ingredient to arrive at a properly balanced drink.
Joy of Mixology.......2007-01-15
I love the book and refer to it all the time. Lots of current drinks as well as old standbys. It's great for the anyone who likes to mix cocktails.
The cocktail book I turn to first.......2006-12-04
The chart in the middle of the book is invaluable. At a glance you can see what you can make with the ingredients on hand and confidentally experiment without straying too far off tried and true formulas (who knew the Sidecar and Margarita were related?).

Customer Reviews:
I did not find the "plain English" in this book.......2007-07-16
I was very disappointed with this book. It is certainly not in plain English, focused way too much on theories and makes it not very approachable. I was hoping to find practical solutions, not some professor talk. To some extent I can only blame myself: only a PhD can write something like that and then put "plain English" in the title. Next time I will make sure I check the author's background first...
Great background on dog behavior. .......2007-05-21
This book is a must for anyone serious about training dogs. Scientific mumbo jumbo is streamlined for the rest of us.
Explaining in Plain English how dogs learn and how best to teach them.......2007-03-14
This has to be about the worse book I have ever attempted to read related to dog behavior. It is a difficult read in that it is mostly theoretical statements with absolutely no practical suggestions as how to approach and solve dog issues. I threw it in the trash about 5 minutes after I began browsing through it.
Excellent translation of theory to practice.......2006-11-03
Simply excellent. It explained in clear terms how and why many techniques work and where they might go wrong. As someone who competes in obedience regularly I would highly recommend giving this book a read.
excel-erated learning.......2006-07-15
I got a lot of helpfull information from this book. Not always easy to understand and retain if you don't give it your full concentration, and it would be easy to become obsessed with training details, also I hate to think of the author using electric collars, NOT pc these days. Well worth buying just the same

One of the best cake cookbooks ever!.......2007-09-10
I just started making cakes about a year ago, and as a newbie, I was searching for a recipe for strawberry cake from scratch. This was the only book I found that had one. The cake came out looking and tasting great--it looked just like the picture, and I am looking forward to making more cakes from this book for the holidays. The pictures are beautiful (a picture of each cake is shown), and the recipes are easy to follow.

W.E.B. Du Bois--the first African-American to earn a doctorate at Harvard, one of the founders of the NAACP, visionary Pan-Africanist intellectual, and author of the seminal text The Souls of Black Folks--has not received due honor in his own country because of his radicalism in later life. Du Bois, hounded during the McCarthy era for his left wing beliefs, eventually gave up his American citizenship. But as a revered leader of black people worldwide, Du Bois merited a state funeral in Ghana when he died there in 1963. This first volume in Lewis's biography, winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize, details Du Bois' early life and work, up to the landmark Pan-African Congress following World War I, which brought "black liberation" to world attention.
