Book Description
With her characteristic brilliance, Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer follows the inner lives of characters confronted by unforeseen circumstances. An earthquake offers tragedy and opportunity in the title story, exposing both an ocean bed strewn with treasure and the avarice of the town's survivors. Mission Statement is the story of a bureaucrat's idealism, the ghosts of colonial history, and a love affair with a government minister that ends astoundingly. And in Karma, Gordimer's inventiveness knows no bounds: in five returns to earthly life, a disembodied narrator, taking on different ages and genders, testifies to unfinished business and questions the nature of existence. Revelatory and powerful, these are stories that challenge our deepest convictions even as they dazzle us with their artful lyricism.
Customer Reviews:
In a class by herself.......2007-01-24
Gordimer's use of language is beyond what the ordinary story teller employs. Her words are nuanced, metaphorical, and indirect in ways that let you mentally fill in the gaps and is very satisfying to one as the reader. I don't know of anyone who writes quite like her. Her stories are not plot driven and seem to evoke something profound about the characters' humanity that is difficult to describe. There are ordinary situations in some of her stories that are so vividly expressed, that they never leave your mind. Her writing is in a class of its own.
Well written but a bit dry.......2003-04-20
The characters of the short stories in Loot seem to be held an arm's length from their readers; even in the lofty "Karma", a story told from the viewpoint of a soul, the meat of life is there but the juice is missing. I didn't feel any moments of clarity or great inspiration, no need to copy down any passages for future reference. Luckily, this book is a quick read, so not much investment needed time-wise.
If you enjoy politics and are an unsentimental, analytical thinker, you'll like this. If you're an artist, emotional, or creative in any way, I'd move on.

What can I tell you? Read this guy! I don't know what he's doing or where he is now, but the series is more than worth it. If you like Douglas Adams, Robert Rankin, Roger Zelazny, Greg Costikyan - well, you'll love Mr. Brenner.

A good science fiction adventure for youth, even if dated........1999-06-09
This is the fifth book in the Lucky Starr series, originally published under the pseudonym Paul French. In this volume, Starr and Bigman Jones travel to a moon of Jupiter to discover the cause of a series of accidents on a secret project to develop a space craft with an antigravity engine. They uncover a spy of Earth's enemy, Sirius. Jupiter IX is called Adrastea in the novel; however, now Adrastea is referred to as Jupiter XV (more (16) satellites are known now than were known in 1957). It is one of the closest moons to Jupiter's surface and could not be the moon referred to in the novel. In an introduction written in 1978, Asimov apologizes for some of the scientific inaccuracies in the story due to all of the new information that had been discovered since 1957. Besides the number of moons, Jupiter's magnetosphere would present severe difficulties to space travelers. The intense radiation field that surrounds Jupiter would be fatal to travelers unless some new method is available to counter the problem. It is also doubtful that the characters would have landed on Io due to its large degree of volcano activity (there are at least eight active volcanos). There is also evidence that Io forms a ring (or torus) around Jupiter consisting of ionized sulfur and oxygen. In 1989, it was discovered from infrared spectroscopy using Earth-based equipment that Io has hydrogen sulfide on its surface. The characters in the novel also land on Amalthea (Jupiter V). This moon, discovered in 1892, is small and has a low orbit. Also unknown in either 1957 and 1978 was the fact that Jupiter has a single faint ring encircling the planet, a ring not detected by Earth-based observatories.

Fifth Book in the Lucky Starr Series.......2006-06-04
Though Isaac Asimov, one of the principal forces behind modern science fiction, wrote this book under a pseudonym (Paul French), he eventually tired of the pseudonym and began putting all sorts of clues into these books that should have led most readers to figure out who the actual author was. I will leave a reader to learn those clues for themselves.
In this book, the fifth in the Lucky Starr series, Lucky and his friend Bigman journey to Jupiter to visit the site of a highly important experiment for a new space drive system. The new system, called Agrav, for anti-gravity, is a target of spies from another solar system. Lucky tries to keep the spies from revealing the secret of Agrav while finding the spies.
The plot thickens as we meet a varied cast of characters and wonder which of them might be the spy. Lucky has yet to find the spy when the first Agrav ship is tested. During the test the drive fails and the ship begins to hurtle toward Jupiter and certain death! Can the day be saved? Who is the spy? I leave the exciting conclusion for a reader to discover.
Isaac Asimov originally wrote the Lucky Starr books in the 1950s. By the time the books were reissued, our knowledge of our solar system had changed dramatically. Many of Asimov's descriptions of Jupiter's moons and Jupiter itself have been invalidated by flybys from various space craft, as Asimov explains in a forward to the revised books.
Look for this book also collected in a single volume with "Lucky Starr and the Big Sun of Mercury" and "Lucky Starr and the Rings of Saturn." That book is titled "The Further Adventures of Lucky Starr." This book is also collected in "The Complete Adventures of Lucky Starr." Other collections may exist.
The Lucky Starr books are a casual read and perfect for readers who enjoyed the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet series of books and Heinlein's juvenile books. There is a lot of logic in each of the books, and just enough hard science fiction to tantalize a reader and hopefully cause the reader to learn more. These books do have a flavor of Asimov's other books, but are less sophisticated. I enjoy these books, but some other readers may find them too mundane. I recommend these books carefully, because I do not know which category of reader you may be. Good luck!

Book Description
From the author of the international bestseller Schott's Original Miscellany, the new collection of vital irrelevance and uncommon knowledge from the worlds of food and drink.
The eponymous foods, famous last meals, and perfect martini proportions revealed in the bestselling Schott's Original Miscellany were only the tip of the iceberg: Schott's Food and Drink Miscellany is a snapper-up of unconsidered trifles from the culinary world. From food history to cooking terms, cocktail recipes to dining etiquette, grace before meals to after-dinner toasts-this olla podrida offers everything for the wine drinker, gastronome, and glutton. Ben Schott's brilliant juxtaposition of delectable tidbits makes this new miscellany so hard to put down, it may even make you late for dinner.

Great Gift.......2007-10-06
I cannot recommend these Schott's books enough. They are fabulous gifts because they're just so entertaining.
Not a cookbook, but a book filled with interesting food facts. .......2007-06-28
This book is a classic. A friend of mine recommended this book to me, so I bought it used on Amazon. I was not disappointed. The facts in this book are fun to read, and as somebody said before, this book is like "Brain food".
Didn't your mom tell you,"You're what you eat"?.......2005-12-27
A great little book that tells you everything you would want to know about what you eat and drink--and many things you may be better off not knowing.Glance at a few things in this book before you go out to eat and/or drinking and you'll be able to spout out a few things that will amaze everyone with your profound knowledge.
First of all,I gotta warn you, this book is very heavily weighted towards British food and drink, next comes European, then only a very small bit of American and as sparse as trees in the Arctic about anything Canadian. That aside,it is still filled with a lot of good morsels.
In this little tome you will get; Quotations as,"Once
a woman has forgiven her man,she should not reheat his sins for breakfast" Marlene Dietrich;dozens of slang words for drunkenness;recipes for cocktails such as Kamikazi,Sidecar,Long Island Ice Tea;Jimmy Carter's White House Grace;Edible flowers;all kinds of conversions,Heimlich Manoever and celebrities who owe their lves to it;Calorific values for various foods; English to American food terms such as Jacket potato-baked potato and french beans-string beans;rates for digestion of various foods;food and drink proverbs, like,"You dig your grave with your teeth.";final meal requests for some of those executed in Texas;Hangover Cures;poisonous mushrooms;Quotations on smoking like,"A good woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a Smoke" Rudyard Kipling;etc.
I hope that is enough to whet your apetite for this book.I got a lot of laughs as well as solid information from it,you should too.
Fun collection of low-cal snacks for the brain.......2005-10-29
As in his _Original Miscellany_ (2003), the author has simply collected a large number of factoids, grouped under useful headings, but where the first published collection ranged far and wide, this one is thematic, restricting itself to comestibles and potables -- plus a number of pages on smokables -- which arguably makes it more interesting. There are quite a few items of interest, including a selection of "last meal" requests by those facing execution, a description of ullage levels, the items in Capt. Nemo's larder, a list of artists who have contributed label-art for Mouton Rothschild bottles, the characteristics of a number of popular restaurant curries, political quotations involving food, and the varieties of vegetarianism. And there are numerous sidebar quotes and comments, mostly droll. Some included items are highly idiosyncratic, like the favorite food and drink of the members of the "Bay City Rollers," or even questionable in this collection, like the details of an after-dinner dance card from 1926, as found in a printer's archive. And, as in the first volume, there is a tendency to present as canonical a bit of information that is simply one among many varieties, such as stating that Japan's "most notable" brand of beer is Sapporo (I would have said Asahi -- and the list doesn't even include Mexico), and his list of meanings for Mexican street food (the contents and preparation of chimichangas, enchiladas, tacos, nachos, etc) seems to assume a standardization that really doesn't exist. Also, why include, as "curious names" in a list of Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors, Vanilla Caramel Fudge and Chocolate Fudge Brownie? But any shortcomings are made up for by his inclusion of the complete lyrics of the Chiquita Banana song. This is a good book for a couple of hours in the hammock and would also make a nice gift for foodies.
Brain candy.......2005-07-23
Having the same flavor as _Schott's Original Miscellany_, _Food and Drink Miscellany_ is a veritable smorgasboard of information and trivia related to edibles. Topics range from the handy and helpful ("Cheers!" in 32 "languages", English to American food terms, Biblical food abominations, how to sharpen a carving knife), to the humourous (94 slang words for drunkeness, Swift's wind and the Comic cookery book) to the truly bizzare (why asparagus makes urine smell, favorite food and drink of the Bay City Rollers).
Great fun to read, it would be a hit with anyone who loves to cook, is a fan of meals or drinks with gusto.

Dr. Nicholas Dodman, professor of behavioral pharmacology at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and director of the Behavior Clinic, turns his attention to our feline friends and their mysterious minds in The Cat Who Cried for Help. Similar to Dodman's discussion of dog behavioral problems in his popular first book, The Dog Who Loved Too Much, The Cat Who Cried for Help examines aggravating cat habits and undesirable behavior, and shows how modifications in such areas as diet, exercise, and environment cause remarkable improvements in the majority of problem cats. Divided into three sections, Dodman first tackles aggressive behavior, followed by emotional behavior, and compulsive cats. With examples from his own practice, Dodman intelligently communicates symptoms, treatment options, and helpful tips for prevention. Vital to his treatment is maintaining the cat's dignified and independent nature, an objective sure to please those cat owners irritated by certain kitty traits but concerned first and foremost for the health and well-being of their cats. Praised by author Elizabeth Marshall Thomas as "a thoughtful and creative approach to changing detrimental behavior," The Cat Who Cried for Help is perfect for cat owners interested in better understanding their fascinating feline.
Book Description
In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Nicholas Dodman does for feline psychology what he did for canines in his widely acclaimed The Dog Who Loved Too Much. Here he reveals the fascinating, and often frustrating, mind of one of our most popular--and certainly most independent--animal companions, and shows how we can coexist peacefully with even the stubbornest of cats.
What do you do about a cat determined to tear your sofa to shreds? Or one who gorges himself on your best running shoes . . . or attacks anyone who dares to open the refrigerator door? Drawing on remarkable real-life stories from his practice at the prestigious Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Dodman shares the unique, compassionate, dramatically successful treatment programs that have given problem cats a new lease on life . . . and their perplexed owners long-term solutions to even the most intractable disorders.
As any cat owner knows, changing a cat's behavior can seem like an impossible task. But contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained and cured of irritating habits and undesirable behaviors. The Cat Who Cried for Help shows how minor adjustments in diet, exercise regimen, and environment can effect dramatic breakthroughs in resolving almost any feline problem. From cat panic attacks to eating disorders, from litterbox aversion to depression and a wide range of feline phobias, Dr. Dodman has successfully treated and resolved these and many other heretofore untreatable behaviors.
Inside, you'll meet Ashley, the boss-cat who literally bites the hand that feeds him; Jonathan, the binge-eater; Rubles, the Abyssinian Jekyll and Hyde, pussycat one minute, man-eating tiger the next; and Thomas, the cat who cried for help--a little too loudly. Dr. Dodman's techniques are based on the most up-to-date research in pharmacology and feline behaviorism. Yet the primary objective of his treatments is to respect and protect the qualities of independence and dignity fundamental to a cat's nature.
Including descriptions of symptoms, treatment options, and tips on prevention, The Cat Who Cried for Help provides everything you need to know to ensure both you and your feline friend a long, happy, and healthy relationship. If you've ever wanted to better understand the nature of this mysterious, enigmatic, and fascinating creature, Dr. Dodman's book provides a penetrating look into the intriguing and intricate world of the cat in your life.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Insights into Cats' Behavior.......2007-10-07
I recently adopted a two-year-old stray tomcat from a city shelter. As he is the first feline companion I've had since I was a child, I felt it was important to try to understand how cats think. This book, and "Hiss and Tell," have given me great insights into why cats do what they do.
In "The Cat Who Cried for Help," Dr. Dodman tells fascinating stories of cats who were misunderstood by their owners. There are the cats in multi-cat households who could not get along with each other; cats with genunine medical conditions which underlie their odd behavior; cats who will not use the litter box (often because there are too few of them, or because they are not kept clean); and cats who suck wool. Most tragic is the subject of the title, a happy outdoor tomcat who was captured and forced to live indoors, and then neutered, declawed and de-voiced for the comfort of his owner. Many of the problems seem to stem from taking nocturnal animals whom our Creator made with a great deal of curiosity and the desire to roam outside, and forcing them to live indoors and on human schedules.
The author does spend a lot of time discussing the use of anti-depressants like Prozac and Buspar in controlling cat behavior. This practice may be controversial, but Dr. Dodman demonstrates that in many cases these drugs may be beneficial, particularly where behavior modification has not worked. Highly recommended for those adopting cats, those who already own (or are owned by) cats, and those interested in cats.
Interesting and Easy Read-Good Information.......2007-09-15
I read this book in little less than a week. It is written very well and the author uses actual cases from his practice to illustrate the behavioral problems and solutions he suggests, which not only makes it fun to read the book but makes it easier to relate to your own pets. He does use a lot of pharmalogical solutions, but he always tries to fix the problem without first or get the cat off the meds as soon as possible. I have an agressive dominant cat and a feuding pair and am currently trying his suggestions on fixing the problem. Actually from what the author explained about serotonin increasing drugs I found a natural amino acid that would do the same thing without "drugging" my cat. Anyways, overall great read, kind of Chicken Soup for the Soul kind of read, much recommended. Fun to read.
Excellent BUT................2007-06-22
This is an excellent book on cat behaviour. It is probably the most insightful book on cat behaviour available for the non-specialist reader. I also liked the author's general understanding of the cat's independent nature and the stress on trying to make us appreciate that nature rather than trying to change it. Many other reviewers were not happy with the stress on medication and I can understand that, but I think the doctor also makes clear that there are other non-medical ways of dealing with problem cat behaviours which involve time effort and a degree of owner involvement which many owners will not do. Hence I think his use of medicines I think is more a way to allow these cats to live rather than be abandoned or euthanized by frustrated cat owners. The BUT part of the review is that the author, I think to make the point that maybe it is better to not have a cat than to destroy its nature, uses a number of very heartbreaking sad examples (the title story cat being the most extreme)of owners who basically destroy the cats nature and personality to try to make it fit in their lives. These stories are so sad and awful you want to have the owners arrested. I understand the reason he does this, but frankly this cat owner could have done with the sound advice and without the extreme and sad examples.
Good Resource for Understanding Feline Issues.......2005-10-08
While this book won't necessarily give you all the solutions for your cats' behavior problems, it will give you a much better understanding of why they might be behaving the way they are and what the possibilities and/or alternatives are.
The book is presented mostly as a series of anecdotes or cases which illustrate various points. However, at times it feels like something is missing in the discussion of all possible issues in favor of staying "on the case."
The author is not shy about recommending drugs to ease temporary adjustment problems, points out that in many cases the cat's "problem" can be the situation it is placed in, and comes very close to suggesting at times that some people should perhaps not have cats at all.
While the book did not provide a quick and easy solution to my cats' adjustment problems, it provided a lot of insight and has been handed around to many other cat owners.
Best of its kind.......2005-07-28
This is an older book, but the best written on the subject. If you are having problems with your cat, this book could easily save your cat's life! It covers all kinds of problems, like cats that don't get along, cats that "spray", etc., and the reasons for them, and how to stop them. I have used it for several years on several problems that seemed "impossible", and it worked every time.
Book Description

There, in a shingled saltbox by the sea or log cabin in the woods, you can indulge in life's simple pleasures. Bring a wonderful simplicity of design into your living space, using a medley of furnishings and natural materials. First, consider the type of cottage you own and its traditions. Choose from six different moods: tranquil, romantic, cozy, nostalgic, rustic, and whimsical. Lakeside refuges often use stones from the surrounding land, and sweet hideaways blossom in the shade of an English country garden. Whether you opt for florals and lacy sheets or Windsor chairs and checked table linens, your home will have flair and individuality!

Book Description
Roberto Cavalli creates with the eye of an artist and the touch of an expert craftsman. His designs are completely original. An audacious master of patterns, he specializes in startling juxtapositions of materials, textures and themes: patinas and metallurgy, zebra skins and Op Art, leopard spots and giant flowers, embellished leathers and embroidered jeans, all reproduced in a vibrant technicolor rainbow. An entire coterie of artists and celebrities, from Madonna to Lenny Kravitz, has adopted his doctrine of glamour, making Cavalli's name synonymous with pop baroque, young decadence and sensual allure.

Wonderful pictures!.......2006-06-02
I was amazed when I opened the book. Granted, this is not a big book but the pictures are great. There are pictures of men and women's clothing. Some of the pictures are from his advertisements, which are very sexy. The reason that this is not a great book is because the pictures are not chronological. There are no dates on the pictures of the pictures from the catwalk.

Perseverance Pays Off in the Long Run.......2007-06-19
I so enjoyed this book and was rooting all the way through for Ruthie aka Gal. Many things about her reminded me of myself (I AM A SURVIVOR of sexual abuse) and, like Gal, I persevered. However, it was only by my Savior's grace that I was able to do so. It was interesting to read Gal's story in her own dialect (like "The Color Purple"). I could "feel" the beatings. I could "see" the house and garden after her return and renovations. I could "smell" the marijuana she smoked as her way of coping with her circumstances as well as the liquor on Daddy's breath. I couldn't put this book down and read it within a few days. I highly recommend it. A++
Pain and Pride!!!.......2007-02-22
This true life story was sooo hard to read!!! But so well written. She takes you along side her in the journey. It hurt me to know a little girl or any child was sooo abused. However, there is a God, and he made this horrific story into a best selling novel. Yeah, I hope for real-time revenge for the heroine...but we know our God never slumbers nor sleeps.
where is the love?.......2006-11-10
Gal, was a tear droper, for a grandfather to beat his children and granddaughter like that its a hurting thing. But then to beat his wife to death " WHERE IS THE LOVE? I can believe how a father and grandfather can do these kids like this. Goodreading
Teary Eyed.......2005-12-17
I read this book a couple of years ago. I cried and laughed a little. I can't believe she went through all that heart ache and pain. I was really disappointed when her aunts(who she was raised with as sisters) didn't give her at least a third of her grandfathers ( who she called papa) insurance policy. She was the one who was there for him when he was sick. HE DIDN'T EVEN PUT HER NAME IN HIS WILL!!! I was sooo happy when she found happiness. This is a must read.
Painful Memories.......2005-12-08
"Gal" left me nodding my head, smiling, cheering and crying. The book is beyond riveting. Emmotionally, I identified with "Gal" because of having to personally endure similar struggles. This book touched me so much, that I'm still thinking about it after completing it more than a week ago. I find myself going back to particular pages verifying information, and calling friends and telling them to read it. My words to them are "just get past chapter two and you're hooked." Anxiously awaiting more of Ms. Bolton's work.
Book Description
Legendary gunfighters come to life in this vivid look at eight of the most ornery guys and gals of the wild West. Here are the true stories of Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Belle Starr, Doc Holliday, Black Bart, and Joaquin Murietta--often a far cry from the glamorous tales they told about themselves to the newspapers.
Andrew Glass separates fact from fiction, and gives readers an overview of the rough and tumble days following the Civil War that produced these unlikely heroes. There's plenty of fun and mayhem in these larger-than-life characters, along with a good dose of the real history of an exciting period in the opening of the American West.
Customer Reviews:
REVISTING THE WILD WEST.......2000-04-08
While waiting for a haircut in a barbershop along Route 66, the author read a Police Gazette story about Doc Holliday. Since this was the most memorable experience of his fourth grade year, he was inspired to share the excitement with young readers. The stories discuss such legendary Wild West figures as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Joaquin Murietta. While Glass's narrative reveals that the true facts behind these stories were greatly enhanced by eastern newspapers, his illustrations are colorful and lively enough to perk up the legendary version. Young readers will probably enjoy this subject as much as Glass did when he was a boy. Their parents may be put off by the illustrations in an era when there is a heightened awareness of guns.
