Book Description

Richard Halliburton started entertaining the world in the early 1920s. "Seven League Boots" was his fifth, and last, book and details his epic adventures in a variety of remote places. The resultant work doesn't have a dull page. It details how Halliburton dined with Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia, interviewed the infamous assassin of Czar Nicholas II in Russia, tried to sneak into the forbidden city of Mecca, and finally, rode an elephant over the Alps in the tracks of Hannibal. It is Halliburton at his best, reckless and romantic.

"Seven League Boots" is not just an adventure travel classic, full of photographs and surprises. It also serves as a literary memorial to its dashing, globe-trotting author.

5 out of 5 stars Seven League Boots.......2006-11-03

Richard Halliburton belongs to a lost generation of adventurer/writers. His books enthralled me sixty years ago and still he does not disappoint. Today it would be politically and geographically impossible to follow in all his footsteps which makes this book (and his others) a modern-day adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun to read!.......2006-08-20

One of my book club friends loaned me this book and it is a marvel! What an amazing man! His descriptions are seductive and his enthusiasm is infectious. I recommend this book to everyone who loves adventure and is interested in history - obviously these are his tales from his perspective but then what history book isn't in the end. It is just so much fun to read! (You don't have to be young boy - I'm an older woman)

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten book-great for young adventurers........2006-07-25

I read this book when I was about 10 or 11, but it is most suitable for boys 12-14 who are decent readers. It is full of non-stop dering-do and accurately describes the author's real life adventures. I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Slayer the Abishai.......2005-06-17

Come on. When I read pages 50 and 51, I was soooo outraged when Slayer dies. I can't believe he dies. He's a character that would have changed the whole world if he hadn't been killed by Sirana, that devil. Slayer is the greatest character in this book. Oh my goodness. If he wasn't killed, he could have easily destroyed the kingdom of Phlan. And, Not only that, he could've been the ruler of the world. That would have changed the whole entire book. Other than all of that, the book was hilarious! Oh my goodness, I totally love the part when Kern goes "Begone, spirit of evil." and Listle goes "'Begone, spirit of evil! Oh, that was great, Kern! I'm sure a real ghost would jump and run at that!". And oh my goodness, I love the part when Sirana goes "Here, let me help you, little sister." and Listle thinks to herself: I'm not your little sister! Oh my goodness, I've got the giggles just writing that. After all, that is my last name.

                    2 out of 5 stars WHY?!.......1999-02-25

No, no, no. Kern should have never been born. He is too dense, stupid, and his relationship with Listle was funny but grew dumb in the end. Phlan, a supposedly strong city, gets ruined 'cuz a damned hammer is lost. Gimme a break! Sirana is just another goof like her dad Marcus (see Pools of Darkness), even worse. Again, the extra star goes to Miltiades. This character is too cool, he should have been in another book! =D Seriously, I'm just glad there is no more sequels. Too lame for FR caliber.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good book.......1998-04-25

The book is fairly good, and great if you love the series. But there are better ones.

                    5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......1997-07-20

Lovely, witty, humourous. Quite a good plot. Satisfying and exciting, though the plot, on second thought, is a bit too simple. Good enough for people who aren't searching for the greatest book in the world. The characters are portrayed nicely

                            Book Description

Two decades ago, the original Star Wars poster was painted by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt. In the high-pressure world of the film business, they had thirty-six hours to finish it--and the result was one of the most famous pieces of movie art ever created.

Over the course of their careers, the Brothers Hildebrandt have portrayed the denizens of Middle Earth, of the Marvel Universe, of OZ. And now, twenty years later, Greg and Tim have returned to that galaxy far, far away, taking with them legions of fans as they portray Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Darth Vader, and the rest of the legendary cast.

This volume gathers together, for the first time ever, their amazing Star Wars paintings. And at the same time, it takes us on amazing tour of the Hildebrandt studio, revealing the amazing process of creating masterpieces.

                            5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2000-01-26

This book would have been more appropriately titled Star Wars: The Art of Shadows of the Empire.

While this book showcases most if not all of the Star Wars art by the Brothers Hildebrandt, it centers on the SotE story. It has all of their many paintings depicting the story in chronological order, along with quotes from the book, photos of their various models and references, early sketches, them at work, and commentary on their creative process. All of the art is beautifully rendered on the glossy pages.

After the are depicting the main story, there are 10 large portraits, one each of all the main characters, which are, if anything, more breathtaking than the story paintings, followed by six renditions of the characters' ships, including the stinger and virago. After that there are six paintings of Boba Fetts adventures in the comics and six paintings of Dash's adventures in the game. If you are a star wars or SotE or just a sci-fi art enthusiast, you should have this book. Forget the SotE comic, this one is much more well done and it is simply stunning.

I place very high recommendation on this book.

Besides being extremely fun for Star Wars fans to see their heroes represented in art, this book, like Dorman's book, is great for art students because it shows the painting's process from concept to live model to finished work.

Everyone has dishes that they love and Chile Verde is one of those for me. This book is a home rum simply because it is the best chile verde I've ever had. Besides that the recipes really are authentic and the book is filled with helpful photos and a section that explains Mexican ingredients such as dried chile peppers for those of us that are not native to that culture. Highly recommended.

We love Mad Coyote Joe's Chicken Tacos! The sauce, Mad Coyote Joe suggests, is so good, but it does not have a long staying power. Last time I made only half a batch for a double batch of chicken tacos. This recipe book is very good!

5 out of 5 stars The essential cookbook to master authentic Mexican cooking........2001-12-19

Whether you be "Gringo" or not, Mad Coyotoe Joe has written the "essential" guide to mexican cooking. This is the best cookbook on authentic mexican cooking I have ever come across and Mad Coyotoe Joe makes it so easy to prepare that you will be creating delightful dishes like Huevos Rancheros (Ranch Style Eggs), Rajas Con Limon (Chili Strips with Lime), Sopa de Limon Y Cilantro (Cilantro Lime Soup), Bistec Ranchero (Ranch-Style Steak) and Tamales Verdes de Maiz Tierno (Green Corn Tamales) to name just a few.

MCJoe begins with his usual opening "notes" to the reader which are always like a good friend come to gossip and then continues with the essential tools of the Mexican kitchen. Each recipe is always begun with a bit of history and commentary and before you know it you have completed making the delectable dish. MCJoe is a bigger than life character who shares his enthusiasm of creating & presenting good food with a southwestern flair. "A Gringo's Guide to Authentic Mexican Cooking" is his best cookbook yet and will have you cooking as though you were born south of the border.

When an animal is truly a family member, you want to communicate with it as completely as you do with human members, but how? Amelia Kinkade is here to show you, with plenty of tools for direct and serious conversation with your four-legged friends. Foes of anthropomorphism, beware: if you don't assume that animals have similar emotional responses to ours, you're liable to find this book a bunch of hooey. Kinkade's techniques involve various methods of telepathy, from sending specific questions like "what's your favorite food?" to receiving emotions like sadness or joy. Her years of experience working with pet owners and rescue services give Kinkade a wealth of fascinating stories. Conversations relayed between unhappy animals and their humans can be instructive to an amazing point--one horse knew he needed an iron supplement, while a cancer-ridden dog apologized to his owner for being "such a burden." Simple ideas seem relatively easy to trade. When leaving for a weekend trip, it's easy to observe an agitated dog or kitty. Calmly relaying facts about how long you'll be gone and what she should expect while you're gone can go a long way toward solving everything from tummy upsets to malicious shredding of furniture. More advanced students of Kinkade's methods can visually find specific causes of pain in animals and listen to what they need from their humans to heal. As with other books on telepathy, you won't find research or studies here. But if you have an open mind and willingness to experiment, Straight from the Horse's Mouth can open up satisfying new dimensions in your relationships with all animals. --Jill Lightner

Drawing on years of experience working with pet owners and rescue services, Amelia Kinkade shares the program she developed to foster interspecies communication. She offers guided meditations and other accessible exercises designed to increase intuition, teaching readers that they really can "talk with the animals," share memories and make plans, negotiate the house rules, diagnose illness, accept one another's differences, and find each other again. The book is peppered with heartwarming and often fascinating stories from her own practice, making it a sure bet for animal lovers of all types interested in enriching the bond with their pet.

This was a very informative book - Amelia Kinkade did a very good job at explaining how to talk with animals. A lot of what she said I could relate to, and with her style of writing, easy to put in focus. Her chapter on "crossing over" was especially well written and informative. This is one of the only books on this subject I've read from cover to cover, and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding and trying to "talk" with your pet. I have not been able to "talk" with my animals, but that's my problem - I have difficulty finding "quite" time in my life. After reading this book, I would be very interested in attending one of her training sessions, if she comes to a town nearby.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT "How To" Book!.......2006-12-13

I loved this book and have read a lot of them on animal communication. Amelia Kinkade explains thoroughly how she communicates and then gives specific instructions and meditations on how you can do it, too. I admit I love her methods and have tried them myself and they work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Animals are great to talk to.......2006-06-24

this book is a wonderful and quick read. going through the exercises has helped me get closer to my own animal companions and truly hear for the first time "their communication voice." My two cats once had a great laugh when I was trying to shush them to get them to answer a different question. They were laughing saying "she doesn't think we already talk to each other." It was almost like they were belly-laughing at me. Go figure. Highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Imaginative.......2006-04-17

I've read a slew of animal communication books and find this is the best on the topic. Kinkade's perspective is fresh and enlivening, different from others, despite the seeming similarity.

What is similar in all of these books, Kinkade's as well, is the need to practice certain exercises. I've tried so many, yet Kinkade's have a twist that others don't have. She has a vivid imagination that she's able to express in print simply, yet with a great deal of detail.

In her exercises, she is able to guide the readers into their own space, giving just enough detail to allow the reader to feel his hand held, but not to take over the person's own emerging "movie."In one of her exercises, she is guiding the reader to a similar place that many, many guided mediations take a person. The "gold light" filling or enveloping the body is almost rote, but Kinkade adds her own slant and makes the exercise feel tangible, gives it new life.

"But on this," Kinkade writes, "the final cleansing breath, see a golden glowing light filling your lungs and permeating out into your body like the sun coming out from behind a cloud...and feel it warming every inch of you."

The simile using the sun emerging from behind the cloud is typical in much of her writing and in every one of her exercises. Her imagery is vivid, yet uncomplicated, and that's most likely why she succeeds so well getting her message out.

I did, however, dislike her Hollywood name-dropping and found her dramatics a bit trying, yet I figure these "starlet" types have their strengths. I suspect she's transferred the imagination required to perform well to this topic, and lucky me! I can ignore the theatrics and name-dropping for the depth of knowledge she's worked to acquire and refine and share with me, the reader.

This is one of the three books I bought when I first started planning my workshop. Beacuse my workshop is in an old one car garage, I needed some ideas for storage of tools, and a good sturdy workbench. Engler really put some time into choosing what items to put into this book. I've already built a cabinet makers workbench, and the adjustable stool in the back of the book, and I'm very happy with the way both of them turned out.

Take into consideration that I'm a novice woodworker, and it didn't take me very long at all to build these two things. This book is well oraganized and well presented. The plans are simple to follow and the materials are pretty easy to find in local hardware and woodshop stores. Overall this book is a great investment for the amount of knowledge you get in return.

This book was the third book I bought when I started planning my workshop. As I flipped through the book at the local book store I saw that is was full of usefull information on how to build benches and storage for my workshop. So once I got it home and read it cover to cover, I was convinced I had spent my money wisely. I've already used the plans to build a cabinet makers work bench, and the adjustable stool in the very back of the book. The book shows the general plans, and u can alter them to fit your individual needs. It is straighforward, and very usefull. What else could you ask for?

When I started getting together my tools, and supplies for my workshop, I wasn't sure what to mount this to or where to put that. So I went looking around to the usual places....book stores and hobby shops and of course Amazon.com. And I found this book here....looked through the description, and ordered it right away. Nick Engler lays it out in a very straight forward and forthright manner. Detailed plans, and just general ideas for tool storage, work benches, and planning ideas for every shop. This book is the is a must read, for anyone who is starting their own workshop, or just looking for new ideas.

In recent years, appreciation for tattoo art has soared, from the discovery of a 5000 year-old tattooed mummy to its acceptance within an art world increasingly intertwined with pop culture. Determined to be a tattoo artist at the age of ten and tattooing professionally since 1967, California native Don Ed Hardy has become one of the world's leading tattoo artists. Inspired by traditional Japanese work, he was instrumental in developing the medium's fine art potential and fueling the late-century international tattoo boom. Tattooing the Invisible Man presents a survey of Hardy's paintings, etchings, lithographs, drawings, photographs, and elaborate tattoos, over 500 color illustrations, most never before published. Chronicling a uniquely extreme self-expression that encompasses Asian aesthetics, Western art history, surfing, hot rod art, and California funk, this exhibition catalogue will appeal to a wide-ranging audience, and will be an important addition to the printed history of the tattoo.

A publishing landmark, the first biography of the man who brought the NAACP to national prominence.

From his earliest years, Walter White was determined to transcend the rigid boundaries of segregation-era America. An African American of exceptionally light complexion, White went undercover as a young man to expose the depredations of Southern lynch mobs. As executive secretary of the NAACP from 1931 until his death in 1955, White was among the nation's preeminent champions of civil rights, leading influential national campaigns against lynching, segregation in the military, and racism in Hollywood movies.

White is portrayed here for the first time in his full complexity, a man whose physical appearance enabled him to negotiate two very different worlds in segregated America, yet who saw himself above all as an organization man, "Mr. NAACP." Deeply researched and richly documented, White's biography provides a revealing vantage point from which to view the leading political and cultural figures of his time—including W.E.B. DuBois, Eleanor Roosevelt, and James Weldon Johnson—and an unrivaled glimpse into the contentious world of civil rights politics and activism in the pre-civil rights era.

5 out of 5 stars "voluntary Negro" and striking activist captured beautifully.......2003-08-11

Walter White was a blond-haired, blue-eyed charmer and "voluntary Negro" who could have slipped across the color line and passed as a white man. Instead, he burned his incandescent energies in the 20th century's many struggles for black freedom. Kenneth Janken, a solid and capable historian, captures White wonderfully in this subtle, fair-minded and fascinating biography.

At great personal peril, Walter White used his light complextion to investigate 41 lynchings and eight "race riots" in which white mobs killed dozens of African Americans. His courage and eloquence--and sometimes his self-promotion and deceit--lifted White to leadership in the NAACP. There he put the brakes on mass-based political organizing wherever it bubbled up. In fact, much of what we think of as "the civil rights movement" happened in spite of, not because of, the national office of the NAACP.

His investigations of mob violence earned White a reputation as a fearless race man. But as executive secretary of the NAACP, White proved himself to be the classic organization man. A skilled lobbyist and fund-raiser, White favored a careful, bureaucratic NAACP than was profoundly undemocratic and sometimes unresponsive to its rank and file members.

At the end of his life, White sank into such despair that he advocated that African Americans literally bleach themselves into white society. His article in LOOK magazine, "Has Science Conquered the Color Line?" argued that chemical treatments to lighten skin color "will provide a way to get fair treatment [Negroes] have always wanted" and "let them live like other Americans and be judged on their own merits." It was as if someone suggested that the ccure for anti-Semitism was wholesale conversion to Christianity! The staggering pessimism beneath these arguments spoke volumes about White's own agonies. And yet White had given his whole life to push the struggle forward, and Janken certainly does not sell him short. In fact, it is the central strength of this book that Janken understands the diverse basis of African American politics, which differed by class and region and in which personal ambitions and ideological clashes also play their part.

It was perhaps fitting that this "voluntary Negro" leader of such mixed elements died in 1955, only months before African American women in Montgomery organized the bus boycott that lifted up a far more bold and imaginative leader, and a revolt of the black masses that would capture the moral imagination of the world. Walter White would not have approved, but he sought the same "sense of somebodiness" that Dr. King wanted for his people. If a race man like Walter White, fearless enough to brave the mob, could not quite escape from his own internalized white supremacy, we should not be shocked to find it lingering in our own minds.

Kenneth Janken has captured a rich, subtle, and important American life with impeccable research and an engaging prose style, and I went away from this book with a deeper understanding of 20th century US racial politics. And unlike, for example, certain biographies--Hugh Pearson's slapdash book on Huey Newton, for example--you can trust Janken's careful research and his historical assessments.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, But the Author Has Too Many Biases.......2003-04-12

Kenneth Janken hads written a very informative book about Walter White. What's good about it is that it rectifies the dearth of good books that really delve into the gravity regarding the history of America's racial sickness. Walter White had a front row seat to this reality. He was able to investigate some of the most gruesome lynchings in American history because most people thought he was Caucasian. The extent of the racial pogroms detailed in this book is amazing. It dramatizes how throughout U.S. history African Americans have had to beg, borrow and steal our way to a modicum of respect. It is especially revealing with regard to the condecension displayed by Jews who called themselves helpful in advancing African American civil rights. And it shows how all people labled as oppressed minorities strive to join the majority group where ever they live. Yet African Americans are the sole group in U.S. society for whom a concerted effort has been made (and continues to be made) to keep on the outside. There are flaws to the book, however. For example, like so many Caucasians, Janken refuses African Americans any right to complexity. By that I mean that he denies us the right to class distinctions by chastising White for looking down his nose at African Americans at the bottom who didn't do their best to improve themselves. This is a common attitude amongst so-called liberal and leftists Caucasians, who seem to feel that all African Americans at the bottom are noble. Yet these same Caucasians do their best to identify themselves as "white," as in separate from African Americans, the implication being that racial distinctions that really aren't legitimate, indeed, are legitimate. Such people simply can't seem to accept the fact that ever since the end of slavery there has been a significant cadre' of African Americans at the bottom who have no interest at all in improving themselves. It is this "noble savage" element which continues to fascinate most Caucasian Americans, who just can't seem to accept any African Americans who seek assimilation and self-improvement as "true blacks." In addition, there is at least one error in the book. Janken discusses the struggle to build the VA hospital in Tuskegee Alabama at the end of World War I. In his discussion he erroneously states that efforts to ensure that the staff of the hospital was all Caucasian were temporarily successful. This was not true at all. From the very beginning, the president of Tuskegee, Robert Moton, and school physician John A. Kenney Sr., successfully resisted all efforts to staff the hospital with Caucasians. The other criticism I have of the book is that in many passages it is overwritten (example: "[White] was no Pollyanna, and he was the angry black soldiers' amanuensis." What the h... does "amanuensis" mean?). Too often Janken strives for words that make a reader run to his dictionary unnecessarily. In this he is like fellow historian, David Levering Lewis. Overall, I recommend this book for informativeness only.

                                      Book Description

Walter White (1893-1955) was among the nation's preeminent champions of civil rights. With blond hair and blue eyes, he could "pass" as white even though he identified as African American, and his physical appearance allowed him to go undercover to investigate more than 40 lynchings and race riots in the years following World War I. As executive secretary of the NAACP from 1931 until his death in 1955, White promoted the Harlem Renaissance and led influential national campaigns against lynching, segregation in the military, and racism in Hollywood movies. In this first scholarly biography, Kenneth Robert Janken considers the man who embodied many contradictions. Walter White gained access to white elite culture, establishing friendships with Eleanor Roosevelt and numerous congressmen and Supreme Court justices, but he ultimately considered himself—and was considered by many—an organization man, "Mr. NAACP."
