"I'm thrilled to see him in bookstores at last."-Jonathan Lethem, author of
The Fortress of Solitude
"Filled with stunning images and incantatory rhythms."-
Time Out Chicago
A wide-ranging and assured, surprising, and funny debut collection. Alan DeNiro's gently surreal stories use a toolbox of genres (including science fiction and fantasy) to grapple with issues of identity, family, gender, and politics. (Think Aimee Bender or George Saunders.) Even in the oddest moments, these characters are real people grappling with real relationships and real heartbreaks. The title story was shortlisted for the O. Henry Award. A Book Sense Pick.
Alan DeNiro lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Customer Reviews:
Genre crossing short fiction...read for pleasure, read to be astounded, read because the stories are that compelling.......2007-04-22
Alan DeNiro's debut collection of short stories, Skinny Dipping in the Lake of the Dead, is everything that I hoped Jeffrey Ford's stories would be and weren't. The stories vary in length from very short (The Exchanges which is a weird exercising in changing identities ) to a longer story (the title story).
What I like best about this collection is how DeNiro takes ordinary every day settings and twists it just enough that an average everyday person is caught up in the middle of something extraordinary. In "Salting the Map" a guy gets a job for a map making company and is asked to salt the maps with fictitious cities and this act of salting is an act of creation. "Our Byzantium" has the Byzantium empire invading modern day America. "Fuming Woman" has a circus performer with real power. "Child Assassin" is set in today's world with a hired assassin who kills people's babies. What if a family of giants move in next door? "The Friendly Giants" addresses this.
All of DeNiro's stories have this sense of the quirky and there is far more pleasure in reading something out of the ordinary than there is in the high literary style of Jeffrey Ford (not that Ford does not have merit). Skinny Dipping in the Lake of the Dead was published in 2006 and hopefully DeNiro has a second collection brewing because it will be my most anticipated collection of the year for whichever year it is announced.

Book Description
Demons on Loan
When the Scottish outlaw Tobias Longdirk used gramarye, or magic, to defeat the Fiend, he did more than save Europe from abject slavery. He made himself the most feared and most envied man in all Italy.
Now, with the hordes poised once more to sweep down over the Alps, Toby and his friend Hamish must unite the quarreling city-states when no ally can be trusted and traitors lurk in every shadow. At stake is far more than just a continent's destiny. At stake is a woman's love!
Customer Reviews:
highly entertaining, very tightly plotted.......1998-07-24
This story is a rousing adventure story of the sort that one might find written by Alexander Pope but with magic and involving the chaotic state of Italy during the time of the condotierre, generals for hire during the Renaissance. One might also compare it to the movie Ladyhawke, but on a much greater scale. The story follows Toby Longdirk and his sidekick Hamish in their efforts to stop the demon-possessed King of England from conquering all of Europe. Along the way, for a change, the spectre of true love and a lady in distress, in the form of Princess Elizabeth of England, appears to complicate things. It gets suitably Macchiavelian toward the end, but I eagerly await further novels. I am not one of these readers who can only handle straightforward storylines. This is not a childrens book, it has too much detail and plot twists to appeal to the Saturday morning cartoon violence crowd.

Stay away from the 1987-88 edition.......2006-08-28
In 1987 and 1988, the two-volume 9.5 magnitude Uranometria became the first star atlas to go deep. It included thousands of deep-sky objects for owners of the large scopes that were coming onto the market. But the first edition had a flaw that made it a nightmare to use.
Imagine opening a road atlas to a two-page spread of, say, the State of Montana and finding the eastern and western halves reversed. In place of one state, you have two disjointed halves.
Ridiculous, you say?
Of course. But, believe it or not, that's the way the first edition presented its two-page chart spreads.
How could any cartographer be so colossally stupid? It comes from following tradition without thinking for oneself. All previous star atlases had ordered their charts in ascending right ascension, presumably so the user would move forward through the book as the sky rotated. But what does this mean for users? With north at the top of the chart, users reach the right edge of a chart, have to stifle the instinct to continue right to the next page, force themselves to reverse direction, and turn--of all places--to the previous page instead. Users unconsciously learned to live with the inconvenience and even got used to it.
The compilers of Uranometria, like everyone before them, applied this tradition to their new atlas, which had two-page spreads. It wasn't until their atlas reached the field that the magnitude of their blunder became apparent. Users definitely did not appreciate the reversed two-page spreads.
The compilers of the Millennium Star Atlas took note of the fiasco and brought out the first atlas sequenced in order of descending right ascension. This made naviagtion through the charts intuitive: the user who reaches the right edge of a chart simply continues rightward to the next page; from the left edge, one continues leftward to the previous page.
When the second edition of Uranometria came out in 2001, the compilers were wise enough to correct the fault; the Second Edition of Uranometria also sequences charts in descending right ascension. Uranometria is, finally, a practical work for advanced astronomers with large telescopes.
Uranometria vs the Millennium? The paperback Millennium shows over four times as many stars to magnitude 11, but some reviewers remark that it shows fewer objects. Whether true or not, the added precision of Millennium is certainly an asset, especially considering the small difference in price: Millennium is listed at $150 and available for as low as $116 plus shipping to Uranometria's $100. Will Uranometria answer with a softcover edition?
Whether you choose the Millennium or the second edition of Uranometria, you will not go wrong. The first edition? Don't even take it as a gift.
Heads up.......2002-10-29
.
Stargazers residing in the Earth's northern hemisphere who are contemplating purchase of this (Northern) volume should be aware the title refers to the CELESTIAL hemisphere, not Earth's. What's the difference, you ask? Well let me tell you....
Basically, the sky atlas covers only the area from Polaris ('North Star') down to about Orion's Belt - everything south of there is contained in the 'Southern' book. Indeed, it doesn't even include the entire Orionus - cutting him off at the knees, in effect. So instead of obtaining sky maps that disclude everything south of Earth's equator (which 'uppers' normally would have little use for), this division discludes half the desired viewable sky!
The opposite is of course true for denizens of the lower-half of our dear blue vehicle.
The 'bottom line' is that to have an EFFECTIVE atlas, you're gonna have to spring for BOTH volumes - so be prepared for the extra expense.
One plus is the scale; larger even than the infamous Sky Atlas 2000.0 with its unwieldy poster-size maps of ~17×22" (add another 12" to the required footprint for an opened book; ergo 17 tall by 34" wide - a factor no one seems to consider) which pretty much relegates it (Sky Atlas) to an indoor reference, unless you have a sizeable reading table available at your viewing site!
But I digress....
The increased scale allows for finer detail, of course, and corresponds to the inclusion of stars down to magnitude 9.5 (Star Atlas limits to 8.5) with a better 'spread' for comparison to telescopic view. This greater scale with smaller pages does translate to more charts (about 260 in this one volume, ~vs~ Sky Chart's 26), but this is no complaint - the detail IS appreciated by the more studious ..of us astro-freaks. Another nicety is the generous overlap of the borders, which minimize somewhat the necessity of having to go to another page when referencing a particular area. Probably one of the 'handiest' features is inclusion in the margins of index-reference numbers to adjoining charts (sorely lacking in the Sky Atlas), which makes up somewhat for that maddening right-left reversal of borders on adjoining opened pages - the necessity of which absolutely escapes me, but for which I've seen hints of correction in the soon-forthcoming new issue.
Another plus is the textual introduction and Uranography sections preceeding the charts. Do yourself a favor and read them first - it might help you avoid the extra expense of the 'Field Guide' to better understand the valuable resource you already hold.
But as said - you need both Northern & Southern volumes to have an effective tool. So heads up!
.

First *deep* deep-sky atlas.......2001-08-21
This review refers to the 1988 edition, and to both volumes (north and south, both of which are needed to cover the whole sky. The publication of Uranometria marked a new era in sky atlases. Never before had an atlas had a large enough scale so that the view through a small telescope looked reasonbly close to what you saw on the page. Norton's and all others could not show enough stars to approximate the view through even a modest amateur telescope. Now, since Uranometria goes to stellar magnitude 9.5, and an 8-inch scope will see to magnitude 14, you can say the situation is still the same. But in fact U2000 is closer, and with a little experience matching views is a cinch, which was not always true with smaller scale atlases.
The two volumes include 473 charts, making finding the right one a bit of a chore - the flip side of a large scale. For some reason Tirion chose to arrange the charts in a weird way. Right ascension on a chart increases from right to left (naturally), but RA from one chart to the next increases left to right - so the left edge of the left hand page matches with the right edge of the right hand page. It took me a long time to get used to that.
My two volumes have been marked with comets and asteroids I've observed along the way, as well as observing notes on the deep-sky objects, so I don't know if I'll care to replace them with the new edition, even though (as I understand) the new charts, based of the Tycho and Hipparcos catalogs will be far more accurate. But for a new observer who plans to be halfway serious, and can't quite spring for the Millenium Sky Atlas, the new edition of Uranometria will be indispensible.
The best star atlas available for the what it cost.......1999-05-09
The Uranometria 2000 is a big step up from the old Norton's Star Atlas and a must have for any serious deep sky observing. As a comet hunter this book saves me a great deal of time working with unwieldy cd rom star atlases which, although they contain much more information on the night sky, are not as ready to hand. I reccomend this very informative and lucid atlas to anyone who has the desire to discover the mysteries of the night sky. Patrick Stonehouse

Overall a great resource.......2007-09-04
This is a great recipe book for those a little intimidated by feeding their new eater but also wanting food to be wholesome, nutritious, adventuresome, and fun. The recipes have made me think of new combinations or add a little spice here and there that I might not have otherwise. The only shortcoming is mixing some of the one year old recipes with those of 9 months up to 1 year, which means the recipes with milk (and eggs depending upon your pediatrician's advice) might not really be suitable for a while longer. It's a bit confusing and limits your options in that age range. I am definitely ready to introduce more things to my daughter within her current repertoire and need a few more hints for the next couple of months. I'll check around elsewhere for those, but this is a great book to have on hand nonetheless.
Harder.......2007-08-23
This book has harder recipes and if I would have gotten this book by itself it would have been a turnoff to making my own baby food.
Great for baby, excellent for children!.......2007-08-16
The book starts out with explanations of organic versus non. Then into baby recipes and finally ones for toddlers. Great uses of a large variety of fruits and vegetables. A must have for your bookshelf!
good baby's first cookbook .......2007-08-09
I bought this to learn how to make food for my first baby. I previewed many others. It's a great book with lots of suggestions for different foods and combinations to feed. It gives very detailed directions for cooking the foods either on the stove top or in the microwave for every recipe. This would be helpful for someone who does not cook a lot, though I find myself just giving the baby whatever we have on hand and cooking it or mashing very simply. I think the best thing about this book is the guidlines for what to feed and when. Also which foods to avoid at what ages. I am sure I will use it more as he gets older and starts to eat more combos of food. Very user friendly book with lots of tips throughout. All in all a good first baby cook book.
my boy loves it! the food is great!.......2007-08-08
great recipes for all age ranges as well as good dietary info. as you get further into the book, some of the recipes are so good that my wife and i find ourselves snacking on the muffins and cakes that come from the book. i would highly recommend this if you like to cook and want to make food for you child that is better than the boring fare of other cookbooks.

Lame-"O".......2007-01-23
...Or why "O" ain't the whole story. The kind of people who like this book are probably the kind of people who think it's just so clever to dress baby in a onesie that says "Organic." Would you do that? I almost would. Yet sometimes there's a mile between almost and would. This bright, cheery book has "baby-shower present" and "first-time mom" written all over it. My excuse, as a 2x mom? Christmas present. I would be disingenuous if I said I've gleaned nothing flipping through the pages. I'm interested in the author's use of grains and potato to provide structure to purees, and I admit to being fascinated by her use of onions, spices and tomatoes in baby food, all of which I considered potential irritants to the infant palate.
I'll tell you flat out that my 7-month-old was crazy for the "apple and banana breakfast," to which, I might mention, I added butter, against the author's advice, and salt. I recently baked the "fruity cupcakes" for my 4-year-old's birthday at preschool; they had just the right healthy-PC-good-mom thing I was going for, though the preschool teacher was disconcerted by my use of unlit candles to anchor little slices of kiwi to the top. Did I intend to light those things?
My two main complaints against the book are these: the idea that by cooking organic, one is meeting all one's child's nutritional needs is perilous, and do you really want to start cooking separate meals for your child now? Let's take a look at a recipe geared for the 4-7 month-old, "Mediterranean Vegetables and Chicken." You start by heating olive oil in a pan and sautéing vegetables. Do I need to expand on this? I mean, I'm all for it if it's in lieu of mac-and-cheese and hotdogs, but then that's also a separate meal for kids. Guess what you'll be doing when the kids are 16? I prefer to adapt whatever I'm eating to baby's needs; so for instance, if I put a chicken in the pot in the a.m., I poach and puree the liver for baby, and she also gets to drink a teacup of nourishing broth. If the whole family is eating Mediterranean Vegetables and Chicken, then OK, let's grab the Braun Multiquick and get busy.
More seriously, the author's dietary guidelines are better suited to the forty-year-old male than the infant. Some are flat-out wrong: "There is no better way to enjoy the full nutritional value of organic fruit and vegetables than to eat them raw." Because babies lack adequate amounts of the enzyme for converting beta carotene into Vit A, they generally don't do well with vegetables. And mother's milk contains over 50 percent of calories in fat, much of it saturated, so the wise mom will make a point of feeding her infant egg yolks and grass-fed butterfat as she weans, not pasta shapes and tomato sauce. Finding good information on the feeding of infants is difficult, the proverbial needle in a haystack. My best recommendation is to check out the Weston A. Price Foundation's journal "Wise Traditions"--look on-line--for excellent information on Vit. D and infancy, cod-liver oil supplementation, etc. The orientation toward non-toxic and alternative farming and pasture-fed livestock fits the bill, and the articles are generally intellectually stimulating.
Great recipes, good ideas -- but would like to be more inclusive.......2007-01-22
This cookbook has some lovely recipes and I applaud the authors for making most of them accessible, and without a lot of ingredients or ridiculous amounts of preparation. After all -- the recipes are for babies. I make the "days out cakes" for my family a lot, and everyone loves them; the meatballs, too, are delicious and good for all. The instructions were clear; the photos, adorable.
However! I'd like if the recipes were more inclusive, offering amounts for more than just one baby, and suggesting how to embellish the recipe for adults. The thing is, if I'm going to spend a lot of time cooking for my baby, especially if the recipes are this yummy and healthful, it would be nice if I could have the option for making the recipe for my entire family (maybe suggesting a spicier sauce for mommy & daddy, for instance). I did that anyway; it would just have been nice to have assistance and ideas from the book's authors.
Some delicious dishes for OLDER BABIES.......2006-11-08
I've enjoyed making many of the dishes in this book--a highlight: the delicious Pumpkin Stew, which my one-year-old gobbles up and I like too--but the recipes are not appropriate for new eaters. A 4-month-old shouldn't be eating complex foods liked mixed vegetables sauteed with onion in olive oil. Like other reviewers, I suggest this book as a complement to other resources.
Organic and Healthy.......2006-11-06
If you are interested in books that provide healthy meals this is a great buy. The book is organized by stages. Simple recipes are provided and your child not only gets to eat healthy meals but a variety at that.
Recipes mediocre, more work than they are worth.......2006-08-15
I liked the idea. I was drawn to it because of the title and thought it would give me good ideas for healthful food for my little one. It didn't.
I have a very picky eater (14 months) and thought this book would give me ideas for new healthy foods to give her, but I must admit, cooking that intricately for a child who tasted it and was not in the least interested is not how I wish to spend my time as a mom. Better to feed her off of my healthy plate. I'd rather cook a meal big enough for the both of us that at least one of us will eat! Maybe in a year or two the recipes for older children will be more successful.
Also, I ate a few of the dishes(since good organic food shouldn't go to waste!) and they really weren't that impressive to me either. And I am far from picky!
The discussion on organic importance was interesting and well written. However, I have already chosen to do as much organic food as I can afford, so it wasn't what I was looking for in the book.
Finally, she talks about weaning a breastfed child as you introduce solids, which is ridiculous. It outlines a weaning process, which just doesn't have a place in the book.

Customer Reviews:
Beswick Animals Charlton 9th Edition compared to 8th Edition.......2007-03-26
I recently purchased the 9th Edition(use it for the horse section mainly), having sold my 8th Edition. Bad mistake: I (perhaps naively)didn't realise that the coloured photo plates of the figurines would vary between the editions. Now wish I'd retained the 8th Ed. For some reason the paper quality doesn't feel quite as high quality, but I could be mistaken(!) Some of the black and white photos are not as clear as in the 8th Edition. Disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any new information in the horse section, and some of the mistakes are repeated. (eg Pg 232 the Appaloosa Stallion Colorway No.2 a.Original Issue is listed as 'cream hooves', but there are plenty of these with striped hooves in fact).
In summary: I think it is worth buying for the new figurines depicted in the colour plates.

Book Description
The eighth edition of Storybook Figurines, A "Charlton Standard Catalogue," is completely updated with recent releases and current market values. Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, and Beswick storybook figurines are illustrated and their technical data listed.
Thirty-two colour plates are disbursed throughout the book in eight page sections. The first two sections, or 16 pages, are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. Almost all `BP' figures, along with their varieties (177 individual images) are illustrated to assist in identifying the different characters in your collection. The third 8-page colour section, is devoted to Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge storybook figures, 68 individual images, which may be used by the collector to assist in building a meaningful collection. The final eight page colour section covers the Royal Doulton issues of the Winnie the Pooh collection, 69 figures are illustrated in this group.
The main body of the catalogue, which includes the black and white images, the technical data, and prices, has been reviewed and updated to bring it current to 2005. Eight new releases were added to the Brambly Hedge chapter, while nine were added to the Winnie the Pooh section. Millennium Collectables added three new releases to their popular line of 20th Century Advertising Collectables.
The fast moving collectable market, brought on by the on-line auctions, is instrumental in the Storybook catalogue now being published on an annual basis. Price movements now dictate that if collectors wish to be current, they must have a current program.

Excerpt from THE HOBBY HORSE NEWS REVIEW, Aug/Sept. 2000.......2000-09-27
Charlton Press, a noted publishor of collector's guides, uses collector-authors for its guides as Charlton feels this provides important insights needed in a collector's guide. From what I've seen, book height and format are consistent between guides. Each book starts with a blurb about the collectible, such as information on the company or the modeling artists. Item listings come next. These include photo (if available), the item name, number, designer, height, color, issue date, and price. Prices are listed in three currencies: U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, and U.K. pounds. An index is located at the back of the book. Also, included are ads from companies, clubs, and magazines that specialize in the particular collectible.
An important aspect of any collector's value guide is the basis of the valuations. Charlton uses a method based on the actual going price in each quoted region. They gain this data by contacting dealers in the various countries and getting the actual prices the applicable collectibles are going for in that area. This method eliminates the fluctuations of currency exchange rates that would occur if the item was listed, say in U.S. dollars, and than an exchange rate applied to calculate the prices for Canada and the U.K. Now we can move on to specifics.
I already had The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Beswick Animals, first edition, so my main concern was how did the millennium edition compare to the first edition. After all, you can invest in a new collector's guide or use that money for a new collectible, so the guide just better be worth the replacement cost. Five years lie between the first edition (1994) and the millennium or fourth edition (1999). So right, there you have five years of change. (You also have two editions I haven't seen, but I can't tell you about them.) The first edition only had four pages of color photos and all were of the horses. The millennium edition now has sixteen pages of color photos: eight pages dedicated to cats and cows, four pages display horses, and four pages miscellaneous other items. That sounds like the same amount of horse models pictured, but it isn't. The millennium edition presents horse groupings; the first edition only presented a single horse/photo. The photos are different, which brings up the question of whether to let the old edition go or keep it for the color photos.
The introduction is greatly expanded as well. It now has club information, dealer/show listings, and a discussion on how internet pricing may eliminate regional pricing by creating a new universal price. (Good discussion by the way. I recommended it to anyone concerned with values theory.)
The millennium edition maintains the high quality of the first edition, so if you are looking for a replacement, you won't be disappointed.
An overview of Beswick animal production.......2000-05-12
This book presents a catalogue of the animal figures produced by the famous Beswick ceramic factory in Britain prior to being taken over by Royal Doulton. Fully illustrated, it also includes information about some of the artists who designed these attractive models, as well as details about the figures themselves, the dates when they were produced, and a price guide for each piece. A must for the serious collector or antique dealer, and a nice addition to your bookshelf for any animal lover.
Book Description
The Beswick Animals: A Charlton Standard Catalogue was released September 1st, 2005, just one year after the release of the 7th edition. This underlines the collectors demand for information on the animals produced by the John Beswick Studio, which was situated in Longton, Staffordshire, England. Written by four experts in the field, Marilyn and Peter Sweet on horses and dogs, and Diana and John Callow on birds, cats, farm animals, fish, et.al., this guide is the most informative on the market today. Readers will discover over 700 illustrations complete with model number, designer, size, colour, dates of manufacture and varieties, plus a handy cross-referencing index in this easy-to-use guide. Recent discoveries have been added to bring this catalogue up-to-date. This book is a must for every Beswick collector.
One of the more interesting discoveries is H260 Hunter, with the tail attached, vs. the more common `tail not attached? which contrary to this catalogue, is the scarcer of the two models.
Several models which were thought to be quite rare have surfaced in auctions. Model 1541 Cat - seated, in dark pewter was recently sold for £1,000, model 2238 Owl, by Harry Sales, sold for £300 and model 1501 Huntsman in rocking horse grey recently sold for a staggering £4,950, in excess of our £2,000 catalogue price.
Beswick cattle are also bringing record prices, particularly the "Red Frieisan?colourway, model 1362A Red Friesian Cow sold for £1,000, model 1439A Red Friesian Bull sold for £1,500, and model 1249C Red Friesian Calf sold for £800.
The 8th edition of Beswick Animals is available from dealers, bookstores, collectable stores, and internet bookstores, such as Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com. Beswick Animals is also available from the publisher at the cover price, plus postage.

Beswick Animals, Eighth Edition: A Charlton Standard Catalogue.......2006-02-14
This over all is a good reference price cataloque, but it is missing some dog items that were in the Millennium edition. I don't know how many other items are also missing. This was a disapointment to me as I really don't care to have to buy another book to get the current value of the items not in this book. I figure for the price it should cover all of them.

You won't regret buying this book........2004-04-26
After borrowing this book from the library I realized that it is so full of helpful information that I am going to buy it to have it in my small home shop. I was surprised to see only two reviews so far for this book: The writing is clear and concise; the diagrams are very helpful. The only thing that I wish for is better photography. Don't get me wrong, the photos work well to support the text but they are some times "muddy" black and white images (I'm a photographer so I tend to be picky about this sort of stuff.). I am relatively new to joinery and find this book one of the best I've read - and I've read probably close to fifty woodworking books in the past several months.
If you are new to joinery like me I think you'll find this book one of your best tools.
Have fun.
Invaluable.......2004-02-16
My woodworking library is growing steadily, as is my stack of woodworking magazines. This is the most useful book on joinery I have read to date. It's not the prettiest (no color photos), but I find Sam Allen's several years' experience working in a furniture repair shop to be invaluable. He has seen many failed joints and analyzed the cause of the failure, and he describes these in the book. He describes the forces that joints are subject to, and how to design for them. The book is well-organized, and the drawings of joints are very clear. I disagree with a previous reviewer that methods are not shown...actually handtool methods and machine tool methods are both shown. Probably not every method known to man (you wouldn't be able to lift the book), but I think if you can see a drawing of a joint and read a description of it, you should be able to figure out how to cut it...that's part of the enjoyment.
Comprehensive, thorough and well illustrated.......1999-05-12
Many possibilities, different ways and methods of joining wood are beautifully illustrated in this book. However, so much information is provided that it can almost become confusing, depending on the person's level of expertise. Methods in making the joints are not shown, so this probably assumes a basic ability with hand or power tools.
This book can be used by all levels; from novices to professionals.

of limited use.......2002-12-14
This book has very few pictures, but many useful tips. I gave it only 2 stars because I would have liked to see how the tips and instructions translated into actual bathrooms. I did not find this book to be very inspiring, but it might be more useful to someone who is remodeling their bathroom.

She had a hard life, but..........2005-07-14
The author tells her story, which has had a lot of strife in her native land. She is a black woman in South Africa, during the unrest, and aparthid. The story does tell how she helped the black movement in South Africa.
The story also tells of a woman who leaves the raising of her children to her mother and her neighbors. She works, which is what many women do all over the world, however, she also leaves her children in the poverty and descrimination to take several trips out of her country, eventually getting a Master's degee in the US. We don't hear the story of the children, who are left in a black neighborhood, without electricity or indoor plumbing. We do not hear of the conditions they live in. We do hear of her going to school, of going to developed countries to continue her education, while her children are left behind, with no schooling, as the schools were not able to keep going during the unrest.
Yes, she did work for what she got, but while she was being flown around the world to conferences, most of the people of her country were living on much less per year than her air fare.
To me, it was a very selfish book, one where the author showed how she put herself before all else. It was a great dissapointment, while she worked to get her education, and get jobs, it seemed that after that, she left the past, including her family behind her. I was hoping for more of how changes were made in the country, if changes helped the people of the country, if the children who were not educated were ever educated and able to obtain positions above an existance, or if yet another generation was left with the ravages of the war, with not much to show for it.
