Book Description

In these twelve intelligent tales, seasoned poet and story writer Gary Fincke reconciles lost hope and quiet despair with small blessings and ultimate redemption. In his world, as easily as one man becomes a hero, another is riddled with failure. Fincke weaves together the large and small tragedies of daily life to create an inescapable, yet at times oddly comforting, reality. His characters inhabit a world of strip malls and fast-food joints, low-down jobs and physical ailments, lottery tickets and cheap beer. Here, everyone and everything is suspicious, and only the luck of the draw determines who, if anyone, will survive.

In the title story, Ben, a fifty-year-old bookstore clerk facing the possibility of prostate cancer, feels his life spiraling out of control as he endures his female doctor's examinations with childlike embarrassment on the one hand and struggles to conceal his age from his teenybopper coworkers on the other. Ben's only consolation is that "every day he heard about something a hundred times worse." In "Gatsby, Tender, Paradise," Bridgeford encounters a group of lightning strike and electrocution victims and feels lucky to have survived several light-switch shocks--the same type of shocks that have permanently disabled one man in the group. Such are the small but important blessings that ultimately rescue Fincke's characters from despair. Here at last is someone who can articulate both our constant, mortal desire to transcend ordinary experience and our simultaneous comfort in the unremarkable and familiar.

5 out of 5 stars One of America's Best Kept Literary Secrets.......2007-06-19

Gary Fincke's Sorry I Worried You won the Flannery O' Connor Award for good reason. If anything, Fincke is a chronicler of everyday life, of burger joints and strip malls, of lives that often go unnoticed in many writers' hands yet exist all around us in present day America. In the tradition of writers like Raymond Carver and Richard Yates, Fincke uses the desperation of the mundane as inspiration. He doesn't rely on cheap tricks. There's no melodrama or experimentation here. Instead, what you get is straightforward realism that's more interested in character than plot. And his prose pops on every page, reflecting his background as a poet. If you're in the market for a collection of technically flawless, unpretentious stories of middle class anxiety, this is the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry I Bored You.......2007-06-09

They really should retitle this book. If you're a literary fiction enthusiast and you love well written stories that have no point, this collection is for you.

If, however, you actually expect an ending to go with the set-up well, with this book you're out of luck.

In the first volume of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita, Daisuke Ido discovers a badly damaged cyborg in the trash heap beneath the floating city of Tiphares, which he rebuilds and names Alita. She has no memory of her previous life, but when she is drawn into a battle with the monster Makaku, Alita realizes that she must uncover the dark secrets of her past.

Kishiro's story is much more than a science-fiction adventure. Woven into the violent, roller-coaster plot is a strand of philosophical speculation. Battle Angel Alita takes us to a world where technology blurs the boundaries between human and machine, begging the question "What makes us who we are?"

Book Description

Her spirit crushed over the loss of Hugo, Alita runs away from Doc Ido and the life she's built in the Scrapyard to become a challenger in motorball, a combat-like game that pits cyborg competitors against each other. As they race through the obstacle course, fighting for the ball, Alita learns her foes will do anything to win, and that losers often don't live to talk about their defeat.

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04

This seems to be a bit more along the lines of 2000AD or even Heavy Metal, as far as the style of story goes.

A scientist and mad mutant/robot bounty hunter finds a cyborg head, and decides to repair it by way of adding a new body a bit at a time.

Along the way they run into the scariest sewer and poo dwelling brain sucking mutant robot madman of them all, the one other hunters are too scared to face.

Add in a cute brave dog and you are set.

5 out of 5 stars My first time.......2006-07-09

One of the fist mangas I ever read.
It's about a girl named Alita who is half robot and half human. Dr. Ido finds her in a scrapyard and fixes her up, she doesn't really remember anything about her past, and they both discover how strong she is. Many fights, great drawings

It's a great book, I am now on book 9.

5 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate........2006-03-04

Someone might have told you that Battle Angel, despite its corny title, is one of greatest of modern mangas.
It is one of the greatest graphic novels, ever.
I've seen very few artists with so much raw skill put equal effort into a deep and complex story.

Start at 'Last Order' if you will, but you'll end up wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Battle Angel Alita rocks.......2006-01-30

Both the story and action in this manga are fantastic and at times touching. I read the whole series and loved every volume.

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2005-09-08

This manga was one of the few series that were able to cut to the core of me. The world our main character Gally lives in is a cold and dangerous place where anyone you care for could die at anytime. Fighting loneliness and fear she struggles to find meaning in her life. I think anybody that reads this book will understand what it feels to live in a bleak world full of terrible things that you just can't understand. We've all been there...where the world seems to loom over you and you just want to give up. Gally is an android but just as human as you and me. At times she wants to give up...but she will inspire her readers by getting up once again to face the dark world she lives in. The art is a bit grimy and messier than the newer mangas, but it fits the atmosphere of the story perfectly. You can even see it improving with each volume. This is the best manga I have read to date. And I highly recommend it to anyone that is willing to look at the world in a honest light.

    Book Description

Our planet has been invaded by Parasytes -- alien creatures that take over their hosts' bodies and turn the victims into killing machines. So far, they've had the upper hand. Their ability to morph their appearance and blend in, combined with their super-human strength and regenerative powers make them nearly unstoppable. The Japanese government is now striking back. Shin, one of only two humans to co-exist with a Parasyte, has been recruited to join a military raid on the Parasytes' stronghold. But he's not the only civilian involved -- a serial killer who makes Hannibal Lecter look tame has been released from prison to join the assault. As the hunter becomes the hunted, the line between good and evil grows even more blurred

Very informative book on the belgian styles in question. The best in the series.

    5 out of 5 stars Brew Like a Monk.......2007-05-21

Brew Like a Monk, the third book in a series about Belgium brews, hones in on the strong ales of the country famous for its diverse styles of beer. The first chapters look at the six Belgium Trappist breweries, providing a sense of place, some points of history, details of the beers produced, and comments about the brewing processes.

The next chapters are devoted to the brewery Duvel, the producers of abbey ales, brewers of strong ales, and prominent makers of these Belgium styles in America. A reader interested in brewing can get a sense of visiting each brewery and asking questions about the beers made.

Accompanying the discussions of the beers are lists of ingredients, hop levels, alcohol levels, and other brewing specifications, surmised or known. The lists are somewhat general but enough to enable an experienced brewer to experiment with replication. Specifics about recipes and brewing methods are, understandably, guarded by the breweries.

The later chapters discuss malts, sugars, hops, yeasts, and bottling processes for these Belgium beers, before a final chapter on recipes. Rather than presenting many recipes, the chapter pulls the book together by defining each of the strong ale styles, with comments on brewing and charts showing original gravities, alcohol percentages, color ranges, bitterness levels, and ingredients.

5 out of 5 stars A trip in belgian brewing world.......2007-02-24

Very interesting book for hombrewers because it teach the tricks used for many hundred years by belgian monks and brewers.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, even for non- Belgian beer brewer.......2007-02-19

I'm a long way from trying to home brew Belgian beer, but I do like drinking it occasionally and learning about its history and variations (including American versions) and thinking about how I'd brew it. This book was ideal for those. Good discussions on basics like yeasts and sugars and the techniques used by the different Trappist brewers. Even some good photos

If I decide to attempt brewing it I'll need more step-by-step information, but I'll already understand the background and some important concepts. Perhaps more important, after reading it I'll appreciate more the ones I drink!

5 out of 5 stars monk it up.......2007-02-03

This, in my opinion, is the most interesting of the series. It has a great balance of technical info. and history of the Abbey's and their beers.

European porcelain was born in the German city of Meissen in 1708. Until now, no source book was available to show the marks used by manufacturers, factories and decorators from the beginning to the present. Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present includes more than 3,300 marks, many of them previously unpublished. More than 1,300 porcelain products producers and decorators are identified, including marks which American importers had applied.A special chapter shows more than 650 marks of Continental and American origin which can be confused with other famous marks. Here are aids in identifying imitations, fakes and look-alikes, and revisions of marks which have been incorrectly identified until now. In all cases, the time period in which the mark was given to enable dealers auctioneers the opportunity to determine the age of a porcelain piece.

5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Resource For Porcelain Marks.......2004-04-13

I bought this after buying several neat pieces of porcelain on Ebay and becoming curious about the history of the maker's marks on them. I was surprised that the book is in two languages, English and German (each page has both English and German text). It took me a little fumbling to get onto the organization, but once I did, it was wonderful in identifying everything I looked up. There are no pictures, just accurate line drawings of the maker's marks. Each is clearly identified by manufacturer and date. It allows you to look up marks by type, for instance "crown" or "anchor" or "anchor with words". One part of the book further gives a very brief summary of the type of wares each company produced (organized by country). It has more marks than any other reference book I have ever looked at, it is probably the only one you need for European porcelain. It also lists present day marks from currently producing companies.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars ... the perfect cockroach.......2004-11-19

As you probably guessed Bugs and Birds in Origami is book of nifty but more challenging patterns to try out once you have already done some basic origami. The birds designs are intermediate difficulty. The bugs range towards hard, but are conversation pieces once you fold them. (Use Amazon's Look Inside feature and the pics will tell you clearly how cool these designs are.)

Diagrams were as clear as possible, given that the designs are often complex (sometime there are like 8 arrows on the same step telling you to fold all at once - gack). I was able to work through these given enough time.

I recommend this book only if you know you have the patience to try and work through each pattern very carefully. These are very nice designs but also complex and not for beginners.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Montroll book to add to your collection.......2001-08-06

I buy every new Montroll origami book sight unseen and I've never been disappointed. This book is no exception.

Historically, Montroll's bird models are among the best because: - They are pretty reasonable to fold, and don't rely on lots of "feather detail" which usually just means lots of tedious pleats.

        - They can stand up! Many bird models will simply not stand when when complete. Most of Montroll's will and that, in my mind makes the model alot more appealing.

The birds in this book have closed backs and enough substance on their legs to stand, you will be very pleased with the results.

As far as the bugs go, if you have ever tried to fold any of the bugs from Lang's "Origami Insects and their Kin." you will be quite happy with what Montroll has to offer here. Using nothing more than 10-inch kami, an intermediate folder should be able to handle anything in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Montroll book on insects............2001-06-20

As usual I have always looked forward to Montroll's books.

Even after getting this one, I cannot help but wonder what he will come up with next.

A general comment is that is book's models is of intermediate standard, similar in standard and style to Montroll's recent books. The birds can be classified as slightly below the intermediate standard suitable for beginners who wants to try something a bit more difficult. Compared to his first book "Origami for the Enthusiasts" and "Animal Origami for the Enthusiasts", Montroll's two outstanding books, the models within are of slightly lower standard. I believe Montroll is capable of doing better that is why I keep looking forward to his new books and purchasing every one in the market.

In this book, Montroll tackle the subject on insects which he has yet to do so in other books. Although the final product's standard is below what I expected, nevertheless, the insects have all the necessary body parts and they are not too difficult to fold. I have seen some of Montroll's insects and I had high hopes when I saw the title of his new book.

For birds, you will find models on goose, cardinal, crow, snipe, ibis, flamingo, ostrich, pheasant, quetzal, pelican, turkey, woodpecker, goose with outstretched wings, pigeon, humming bird, vulture, robin, crane, parrot and stork. None of these models caught my eye and cause me to sit down immediately to fold it. My favourites are pheasant, humming bird, pigeon and cardinal. I like folding birds.

For insects, you find scavenger beetle, ladybird, fly, spider, wasp, long-horned beetle, earwing and butterfly. Again nothing here caught my eye. Sorry if I am difficult to please. I cannot help but compare this to Kawahata's Insects.

Overall, if I were to compare this book with other Montroll's books, I will give this 3.5 out of 5 but compare with other origami books in the market, I will give this a 4.5 out of 5. Hence I rate this with 5 stars.

        Book Description

With this handsome book, anyone can make striking works of origami. The twenty birds, beasts, bugs, and butterflies featured here were inspired by animals that appear in the works of art in the Metropolitan Museum. Starting with a simple-to-make butterfly, the pieces in the book become gradually more complex, so that even beginners will have mastered origami by the time they finish all the models. Appropriate for children and adults alike, the book includes a pocket filled with forty-five pieces of traditional origami paper.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for kids or beginners!.......2007-05-17

My daughters and I have taken up Origami for fun. We first checked this book out from the library. The designs are great and easy to understand. I loved it so much we decided to buy it. Both my girls are able to follow the clear directions and illustrations. (my girls are 8 and 9+) This is my favorite of the several books we have. As the book title says, it's great for beginners, children and adult. 5 STARS! You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The meeting of two cultures.......2006-11-07

Though it is nominally written by James Seaver, The Life of Mary Jemison is told primarily through her own words as recounted in her advanced years. The tale is perhaps unusual for its length, but not for its subject matter. It was, in fact, a far from uncommon occurrence that in colonial days the captured victims of Indian attacks would be formally adopted into the tribe as a form of compensation for lost relatives of previous battles. This was the fate of Mary Jemison. The saving grace that made her subsequent life manageable was that the adoption in question was apparently done in full faith. Once enough years had passed for her to lose her drive to return to civilization she was treated every bit as a member of the community.

What followed was a life that she tells of that is filled with the usual tales one might expect from that era and community. She formed a family and was given to two husbands who treated her well and gave her several children. Lest we are tempted in this century to romanticize the life of the Eastern Indian tribes, she tells of the many brutalities that were commonplace among her new people. Violence, whether directed outward towards the white communities or inwards towards each other, seemed to be an unfortunate fact of life. Though it did not touch her person, it did touch her life and always for the worse.

Interspersed with her story are various anecdotes about her family members and the occasional other member of the community. In her late years Jemison related tales that she found fit to share for their intrinsic interest to the outsider. Through her words the modern day reader may find a simple glimpse into a world that is cut off from us today. Following her own tales are several appendices covering a few aspects of Indian culture as it was understood at the time (the early 1800's) that related to her story. Overall, I'd say this is a worthy look into a real-life event that straddled the boundary between two cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Indian Captivity Narrative.......2003-03-27

This book is an incredible account of the life and times of Mary Jemison, a white woman taken captive during the French and Indian War and adopted into the Seneca tribe of the Iroquois in western New York. This tale covers her more than 70 years living among them through many of the most vital years of the long history of the Iroquois Confederacy.

In November 1823, when she was in her 80s, Mary Jemison, at the urging of many of the friendly local inhabitants, gave her amazing life story to James Seaver to publish for posterity. Though his truthfulness in some details of that account has often been called into question, this book is one of the most important and complete of any of the Indian captivity narratives to come out of the period between the French and Indian War and the War of 1812, which most historians mark as the end of the period of influence of the Eastern Woodland tribes. This account gives unequalled insight into the Seneca Indians and their ways including religion, food, hunting, warfare, culture, etc.

Mary had many opportunities to leave the Indians and return to white civilization but chose not to do so and thus was witness to some of the most amazing events in the history of her adopted people. Her tale is important to not only historians and ethnologists, but to the general public itself as it is a truly amazing story of triumph and tragedy for a proud people struggling to survive in the face of overwhelming odds as a young United States continued to expand, forever extinguishing their way of life.

                  5 out of 5 stars Fascinating History.......1999-12-05

The narrative is fascinating reading, both in terms of the history revealed in the words of Mary Jemison and in terms of James Seaver who gives us his own version of her story. The effect is a layering of historical periods. With the help of the editing, you can peer through and see not only the period of Mary Jemison's captivity, but also the prejudices of the following time. An interesting example of the simultaneous respect and loathing with which the early settlers viewed the native inhabitants. I first read the narrative in high school, and would recommend it for young and old readers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Firsthand account of Captive who became tribal Matriarch.......1996-05-30

They say if you visit New York State you will find her descendants; many native-americans have her last name. Taken captive; her parents killed - Mary becomes part of a native-american family. She married a Delaware (Lenape) warrior, with whom she was very content and has many children. This is a dramatic, true story, told in her own words. She is in her 80's, and reminisces about her unusual life.

From the supplier: 'A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison' tells the life of a European American woman captured by the Shawnee in her early teens and who chose to live with her adoptive Native American family despite opportunities to return to the civilized world. More than a simple fiction, the novel reflects Seneca women's power in society and the respect accorded them. It also imparts a woman's representation of everyday events and presents communal cultural values as well as tribal solidarity.
