Customer Reviews:
Thurston writes the best Battletech books period.......2005-02-15
Generally you'll find the readers that dislike him of the younger teen persuasion.
I think these same people fawn over Loren Coleman whose writing style can be summarized by "ruby beams seared out against the ferrofibrous as metal melted into the ground"
Don't let the lower reviews fool you, this is easily the best Battletech novel there is followed closely by his undeservedly reviled FreeBirth and Falcon Rising... Generally battletech books don't make me laugh or strike me as humorous but these have some comic gems in it. Their actions are subtle and the humor may be a bit too dry for the average hack sci-fi novel reader.
No, I know. Battletech novels fall into 1) The uber political by Stackpole which I love. 2) the tediously agonizing battle descriptions and predictable plots twists
Thurston offers none really. Sure there is some intrigue and battle but the focus is the characters, their quirks and interesting details in day to day Clan life.
Star Commander Joanna has about 100x more personality than Natasha Kerensky ever did. No doubt Stackpole is tops at creating a universe and factions but sometimes made HIS characters into fluffy jr. high youth group do gooders. Not Clan Jade Falcon warriors though. Sarcastic, existential and brash all in one. IMHO the least interesting Thurston character easily trumps the cookie cutters heroes that Coleman and Gressman push out.
Indomitable human spirit, passionate warriors.......2005-02-04
I really liked the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy. In this sequel, Thurston continues to flesh out the Jade Falcon clan. This is a great book, though I found it a little weaker than the original trilogy, which had a more focused plot and atmosphere.
Now that Aidan Pryde has met a heroic death, Joanna takes center stage. Joanna was always a wonderful character and she deserves more attention. She has an unconquerable spirit. Despite being - if I recall - in her 30s, incredibly fit, and a seasoned fighter, her clan considers her old and weak, unfit for honorable duty. They consider her contemptible for even being alive, as a true warrior should have died in battle by now. She is almost universally hated and despised. Of course, Joanna never worries about how others perceive her. She returns their hatred in greater measure. She hates her commanders, authority in general, the younger Falcon generation, the Wolves, the other Clans, and the Inner Sphere. She hates her lack of a bloodname, she hates the shame she holds after Twycross, she hates witnessing affectionate feelings, she hates her age, and she hates her miserable future. Her hatred is so strong that it is something pure. It allows her to win against daunting odds. Her pride and stubbornness are unmatched, and she never admits weakness. Joanna will take cheap, underhanded attacks in order to win.
Joanna is now the Old Guard, a proud Falcon watching her clan deteriorate. Her new commander is frail and refuses her challenges for trials. Young warriors show romantic attachment to each other. They chant, "Praise Aidan Pryde," in a ritualistic fashion. The scientist caste is defying the warrior caste. Joanna remains a purist, raging against the changes occurring around her.
This passage reveals a lot about Joanna's personality:
Diana: "Stop it, Joanna. You are spooking me. You will not die. You will go on forever. Mean people do."
Joanna: "Yes, I am mean and I hear that it is the miserable fate of mean people to die in bed."
Joanna has two friends, though she would never admit it. Like Joanna, they are pariahs among the Falcons. Diana is mildly interesting. Horse has a great cynical dry humor, is diversely educated in the midst of narrow-minded warriors, and is an unappreciated warrior.
Pay attention to Star Colonel Ravill Pryde. He is a short, frail warrior who refuses challenges, tries to win the admiration of his troops, borrows from Aidan's glory, uses devious tactics, and relies more on wits than warrior rage; by Joanna's standards, he is a deviant Falcon, yet he is amazingly successful. He is dislikable and admirable at the same time.
All four of these characters reveal something about Aidan Pryde, who left behind a legendary legacy.
The writing quality, while solid, has declined after the Jade Phoenix trilogy. For instance, observe these weak insults:
Joanna: "Castilla."
Castilla: "My name is ugly in your mouth."
Joanna: "Your mouth is ugly."
...
Castilla: "Your breath is foul."
Also, parts of the story proved weak. Joanna is asked to solve a mystery, and she uncovers secrets with ridiculous alacrity and ease.
Some readers complained about the ending. I believe it works very well; consider Joanna's spirit and methods.
I recommend I Am Jade Falcon for any Battletech fan. It features indomitable human spirit, refusal to accept mediocrity, fierce competitiveness, and stubborn pride.

Has its moments.......2004-02-19
I'm not a fan of Robert Thurston. There's too much baggage in the two books of his I have read, as he seeks to rub your nose yet again in how vitally important Aidan Pryde (praise Aidan Pryde!) was to the functioning of the universe from now until the end of time. Oh, and introduce you to yet another nefarious plot involving the honorless freebirth scum of the scientist cast and their tinkering with the legacy of Aidan Pryde (praise Aidan Pryde!) who was vitally important to the functioning of the universe from now until the end of time.
However! I rather like "I am Jade Falcon", because Star Commander Joanna is such an unashamedly bad-tempered and aggressive character who won't stop fighting anything and everything till the last possible moment. And Ravill Pryde, her new commanding officer with annoyingly cheerful and devious ways, has his charms as well. If you ignore the Aidan Pryde (praise Aidan Pryde!) element, this is not a bad mix of action and intrigue in which (gasp!) both Joanna and Ravill Pryde LEARN SOMETHING.
Better then some.......2002-03-04
I red this book recently and I must admit it is better then most. This book goes into the story of Joanna the jade falcon. Without reading this book some of the other ones are a little more confusing but it is not a must read. All together though this book is well written and a good read.
arrggghhhhh!!.......2001-05-18
I have no trusted Thurston, and I never will. I can never forgive him for the death of Natasha.

I went from Burning Toast to Winning Blue Ribbons at The State Fair! .......2007-10-08
I have always fantasized about canning and preserving my own locally grown garden vegetables and fruits. One day on a lark of what my partner called "Pure Insanity" I bought a Water based canner and equipment to put my dreams into reality. I would have panicked had I not reviewed and purchased this book the day before.
In only a matter of a few hours I read the book from cover to cover and felt like an expert. Soon thereafter when I found a wonderful source of locally grown cucumbers I "canned" 8 pints of 'Bread and Butter pickles' from a recipe provided in this book. Three weeks later I was the recipient of a Blue Ribbon at a local fair for my "Prize Winning Recipe". I was astonished! They will never know the secret of my success was "The Dummies Guide" but I will never forget. I've since gone on to do Corn Relish, Apple Butter, Lime Pickles, and tonight I shall can Green Beans and Carrots.
This is the book that will bring success to the otherwise accident and disaster prone "cook". Don't start this hobby without it!
Canning & Preserving for DUMMIES.......2007-09-19
The book was well written. My wife loves canning and this book had information that she did not know how to do. Best thing I ever got for her.
Great Book for the Beginner.......2007-07-27
I used to take insult to "dummy" books, but this book is wonderful. Since I had everything to learn about canning, this book written with it's simplicity and step by step detail, has been a great resource.
Despite errors and hysteria an OK Beginner Book.......2006-08-29
Being a former research scientist, it is perhaps unfair to critique a book for beginners. The recipes, trouble shooting and sources chapters are great. You will never get sick following this book.
Corections: One piece caps designed for home canning of jams are fine. All jars designed for canning may not be used. Those manufactured prior to WWII will break if used for pressure canning due to internal stress created by movement of the high soda glass over time. Used tomato sauce jars that use a standard cap are fine. Regular green beans (formerly called string beans) have not required destringing for 40 years. The jar lifter is gripping the jar where it will slip. Do not use wet dishtowels to wipe the lids. Your toilet bowl contains less bacteria. Use a paper towel. 2 piece (dome) lids on higher silica jars were used throughout WWII in Victory Gardens. I still use my mother's made in May, 1943. Do not bury your spoiled low acid food in deep soil or go through the detoxification process. Your sewer authority will probably tell you to dump it down the drain. If you do not trust their advice, take the food to your toxic waste drop off. If you have followed the directions as to pressure and time (you may not cheat), you do not need to boil all your canned low acid foods. Eat your food before canning the same veggies next year (a problem in WWII). Always can with a friend(s), especially the first time. It's more fun that way and safer should there ever be a rare problem (like a sticking valve in the MIRRO canner - tap with a wooden spoon and get your husband to fix it later). Botulism bacteria are killed at 212 degrees (actually 10 min. @ 80C according to the CDC). It's the spores that require 240F for the times indicated. In nearly 40 years of canning and raising three children from our large garden and orchard, we have never had food poisoning. Just remember, cleanliness is next to godlineness.
A basic must..........2005-10-10
Canning & Preserving for Dummies is a great 'starter' or review for those who are into home food preparation and storage.

Your pet will benefit from this book.......2007-03-13
This was a great book. If you are looking for ways to help your pet feel better, this is the book. It works with helping them emotionally. I use many of the suggestions in this book and they work! I would recommend this if you are into holistic healing methods for animals.
Great Book.......2007-02-10
Somewhat different but we have used these remedies with our pets for nearly 15 years and they are more effective on them than on people. Try using Rescue Remedy on your pets when they are going through something stressful like going to the vet and watch them calm down. Pets don't have all of the barriers that people do. This is a great book with an author who knows this topic.
Good book on flower essences + animals (limited to Bach only, which is not good).......2006-12-15
I've studied flower essences for over ten years. I own several books on flower essences + animals, and this is in the top four. I use it all the time for my several cats.
However, I am giving this book only four stars. As nice as this book is, it is limited to ONLY Bach's original 39 flower essences mainly from England. Nowadays, flower essences are much more than the first 39, including flowers from North America (Northern California, deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida); Scotland; Australia bush; New Zealand; South Africa; South America; Central America; to mention a few. Bach died young in 1936, leaving his work unfinished, and many people in the last 70 years have taken up where he left off, much expanding the number and quality of essences (depending on where in the world the flowers are indigenous).
Frankly, books on Bach's first 39 flower essences are so ubiquitous that I now avoid them in favor of books covering flower essences from other parts of the world besides England. Plants of England are not the only plants in existence! I am REAL tired of books getting published involving only Bach's original 39 essences. Even though Bach "bumped into" his first 39 essences, Bach's essences are not the holy grail of flower essences! Look further afield than Bach's essences.
Very helpful in avoiding the vet.......2006-08-27
This is a good do it yourself book. My dog has separation anxiety and I found this very helpful. I'll keep it handy for other problems as they are encountered.
Life Saver!.......2006-08-05
I have been working with the Bach flower and other homeopathic remedies for as long as I am able to remember. Like other reviewers have said, I have had to try to modify treatments from the books for humans to animals. Most of the time it was ok, but not always. This book has been wonderful.
I personally do not agree with the forward written by the doctors saying that animals do not have feeling, but instead act and react according to instinct and animalistic behavors. I have been working with animal communicators for years to know this is not true. They do to have feeling just as you and I do. Anyway, outside of the intro, the book is wonderful and I have bought it for my vet who works with herbs and Rescue remedy and some friends as well. So all in all. . .I highly recommend the book!
Book Description
This is the definitive guide to treating animals with the Bach Flower Remedies. It includes a complete introduction to the Bach system and its usefulness in treating animals, followed by guidance on using the remedies for a variety of conditions.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable guide for using Bach Remedies with your pets.......1999-10-10
As a caretaker of six cats and a dog, I have used Bach Remedies for years with my animals but I've always had to refer to books focusing on the use of the remedies with humans. This book has come to my rescue and I especially like that there are separate chapters on cats and dogs. There is also a separate chapter on use of the remedies wih horses.
The best feature of the book is the second chapter "Using the remedies" where the authors spell out the animal behaviors that can indicate a need for each of the 38 remedies. For example, Crab Apple is the remedy for cleansing and is indicated for a animal who does excessive grooming or chews on its fur or feathers.
The only negative aspect for me, as an American, is the very British slant in the resources lists and in the case studies. However, that is a small complaint in the overall usefulness of this title.
Book Description
Cat owners can care for their felines from kittenhood to old age through a safe and natural system using the flower remedies created by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s. This book explores how this healing therapy treats ailments with different flora and can be applied to cats to ease their mental stress, worry, and other emotional problems. Individuals can gain a closer understanding with their cats and spare them from unnecessary medications and drugs in the process. The book delves into the background of the 38 different Bach flower remedies and their applications in animal health, and it also addresses commonly asked questions about cat behavior.

Customer Reviews:
A Neophyte Looks at Woodburning.......2007-05-18
Although I have been involved with woodcarving and sketching for years I have never tried woodburning. I turned to to Lora Irish's book as an introduction and am very happy with her work. She is an excellent teacher and her book takes the beginner through the basic stages of pyrography, including an excellent series of practice sessions and projects. The book is well bound and the color graphics are excellent. There is a glossary and an index. This book will take the beginner through the various stages of artistic competence as far as his or her abilities and interest allow.
Great book to get you started in pyrography.......2007-04-07
This book has it all. Different techniques, how to create tone values, the options available in different woodburning kits, easy to understand and a world of information. I can't say enough about it.
Excellent Pyrography Book to Grow With.......2007-02-11
"The Great Book of Pyrography" is a wonderful resource for someone starting out in pyrography and hoping to advance. The book covers techniques from most basic to advanced in a clear manner with tons of illustrations and photos.
I especially appreciated the explanation of both using a more basic single temperature tool (inexpensive and the one most beginners would be using) and the more advanced multi-temp tool.
By following the chapters in the book from beginning to end, especially utilizing the practice board (using 1x1 squares on a larger board to test various techniques) the reader can quickly learn and improve their skill level.
Xmas gift.......2007-01-10
My spouse asked for this book and I got it for a great price on Amazon. She loves it and is eager to try the techniques in it.

Book Description
The main concern of this book is the religious policies of the early bAbbasid caliphs. It focuses on the religious trends which went into the making of Sunni Islam, and traces the emergence of the nascent Sunni elite in relation to the bAbbasids. Various aspects of the caliphs' evolving relationship with the religious scholars are studied and the nature of caliphal patronage and its impact on the scholars, and ultimately on the evolution of early Sunnism, is explored. What emerges is a picture of close collaboration between the caliphs and the bulamac, with the caliphs playing an active and multifaceted role in religious life. This book challenges the prevailing interpretations of the separation of religion and politics in early Islam, and offers new insights into the social and religious history of Islam's formative centuries.

Book Description
In this illuminating book, a prominent art historian explores the links between avant-garde art and modern mass culture, showing that the connections between the two have always been strong, and even necessary to both. The author recounts vivid episodes involving Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Christopher Williams, and many others, arriving at fresh and original insights into modern art and its place in late twentieth-century culture.
Customer Reviews:
Good guide through treacherous territory.......2003-04-15
I personally hate modernist art theory with a passion *BUT* since there is a need to navigate this terrain, Thomas Crow's book provides an excellent overview. He cuts through the BS and explains how we got to where we are in the art world - including why art criticism seems less and less interested in any actual art. Or being understood by the general public. Difficult reading nonetheless.
Forbiddingly Difficult.......2001-03-17
This book consists of a collection of eleven essays on modern art in the common culture. Chapters touch on Warhol, the New York School, Hank Herron, Artforum, pastoralism in recent art, and comparable subjects.
On page 185, Crow refers to the increasing "tendency of critics to assert their prerogatives by cultivating a forbiddingly difficult language." Crow himself is a learned critic of modern art and its relations to the common culture. However, his book unfortunately is an exemplar of the depressingly difficult language he mentioned above. For example, on page 78 he writes of artists "asserting a condition of non-difference between high art and the general economy of sign production, art being increasingly distinguished as an extraordinary and privileged marker by the actual behavior of that economy."
If coping with this type of writing comes readily to you, there are several worthwhile insights that can be gleaned from the book. For this reader, however, the game was not worth the candle, and try as I might, after ten chapters, I could not bring myself to finish the eleventh and concluding chapter. Caveat emptor.
Hope for art.......2001-02-09
Is contemporary art dead? Amidst the onslaught of all the -isms and in a life-world in which art and life seem so removed: is art dead today?
Crow doesn't think so and he offers a selection of observations of specific artistic practices that illuminate the vitality of art in our culture today: yes, it still speaks and it still responds. There is still hope.
There is a great reading of Warhol's "Disasters" in its social and historical context. You might just take another look at a Warhol after reading this piece. And against Peter Burger's declaration that the avant-garde is dead, Crow responds that engaged avant-garde practices still exist, if not flourish today: Bleuker and Matta Clark, to name a few. As an art historian of 18th century France, Crow proves to be a deft observer and critic of contemporary art practices.
Beautiful picture plates alongside brilliantly written essays. This is art criticism and art history at its best. What is criticism? The best, I think, are the ones that appreciate and demonstrate value without the pretenses and the cliches. This book is such an effort.

A Football Superstar.......2005-04-13
If you are into sports books then The Emmitt Zone is a great sports book to read. It is probably one of the greatest sports books i have ever read. In this book Emmitt talks about football being a contact sport and discribes the sport of football. He tells you some records about some players that play in the NFL. He also tells you about his College Football and National Football career and records. Then finally Emmitt talks about his life style when he was grewing up from a little boy to a Football Star.
A great book, but written a little early.......2004-04-05
As a Cowboys fan for over 20 years, I really loved this book. It's a great portrait of a great running back and a role model we should all emulate. My only criticism is that it was written a bit early in his career - the book doesn't cover a great deal of events that readers are sure to want to hear about, such as Super Bowl XXX, Michael Irvin's retirement, Troy Aikman's retirement, the rushing title, etc. But, I still recommend the book highly for Cowboy fans who want to smile and remember the early 1990s, when Dallas established itself as one of the most dominant football teams ever.
Sweetness Jr........2003-05-14
Emmitt Smith has gone through many ups and downs in his career. Some of include three Super Bowl titles and a rushing record. Some of the downs include living in the projects and having a semi-rough childhood. Emmitt grew up in Pensacola, Florida. He lived in the projects for a few years. Emmitt had a very large immediate family; all of them were very close and helped Emmitt through a lot. Emmitt attended the University of Florida for college, where he broke numerous rushing records. Emmitt was the Dallas Cowboys' first round Draft pick in 1990. In the NFL Emmitt Smith is one of the premier players.
This autobiography gives a great insight to life. Emmitt Smith really did a great job writing this novel. This book gives you a good look at the NFL - from the top. I recommended this book to anyone who wants to read a warming story about someone who worked hard to get where he is today.
