Sultana's Dream, written in English (1905), is a delightful satirical work set in Ladyland, where the men are in purdah and the women go out and work.
An extraordinary novella with generous dashes of melodrama and romance, disasters and coincidences, Padmarag, written in Bengali (1924) and translated here for the first time, describes a female-founded and female-administered community set in contemporary Bengal, where women from diverse regions and ethnicities, with unhappy histories of patriarchal oppression, better their lot by concrete social action.
Both Sultana's Dream and Padmarag discuss in playful, fascinating, and intelligent ways the question of women's education.

I have collected more cook book , and have never had so much pleasure cooking the recipes for this great Italin cook book. All the recipes come from all over Italy and the result is that you learn about the country and it produce. Fresh natural foods that grow in that region, naturally. I like to cook simply with fresh foods,useing as many vegetables as I can find, a different recipe for. THIS IS IT. THIS IS ALL YOU NEED I am thinking of selling all the other books have have searched through for all the good and different recipes , I only found in this ONE BOOK
Want t To Eat Great Food? Buy This Cookbook........2007-09-15
Despite the badly designed paper-over-board cover that resembles a made-for-the-bargain-table reject, this is a wonderful and amazing cookbook!!! Filled with simple, yet delicious recipes, this is a must have for anyone who wants to cook great Italian food at home. If I could have only two cookbooks (or had to recommend only two to the starting at-home chef), it would be this one and Mark Bittman's How To Cook Everything. Though I haven't made all 1000 recipes in Scicolone's classic, so far everything I have made has been great - which means I've got a lot of good eating ahead of me. Buy it now. (PS. Wiley you might want to update this with a better cover.)

We just recently bought this book and have done so many recipes from it already. The herbs, the spice combinations, are just so fantastic. We haven't made one single recipe out of this book that wasn't four-star. Read the index to get an idea of the recipes - but if you love intricate, spicy, combinations of food...buy this.

I haven't tried the recipes because the print is very hard to read. It is a light green print and if one has bad eyes you will need lots of light. Very disappointed in the book because of the print.

I really enjoyed reading this book on Boxers. I am researching dog breeds before I commit to a new family member. There was a careful balance of enthusiasm for the Boxer and warnings of their specialized needs AND the responsibilites of Boxer ownership.
I especially enjoyed the observations he made between male and female boxers, puppy training, and problematic behaviors.
Even if I don't decide to own a Boxer in the future, this was an entertaining educational read that I would recommend to all.

Like most for dummies books, this is essentially a cut and paste of all of their other dog books with the word boxer inserted in place of dog. In a few cases it has stories of the writers experiences with boxers but this book is really nothing special. Try culture clash to get a better understanding of your companion.

There is a lot of information here. From the breed history, to training, to behavior tips, to choosing a Boxer, this is the book. There are few books that contain this much Boxer information. You can't go wrong with this title. The author has written this well, as it is an easy, enjoyable read.

This is an excellent book for new Boxer owners as well as the seasoned owner. There is so much information on acquiring and owning a Boxer for the first time. Being a Boxer owner I can say that the author has cover all there is to know about bring a Boxer into your home and raising it as a companion and a friend. Boxer are definately not for everyone and if you are thinking a getting one of these wonderful babies then this is a must read book.

As a long time linen lover and now professional dealer I find this tombe to be a wonderful 'picture' book ~ but when it comes to actual informative content I feel that there are better sources ~ the information given is helpfull for the beginning to intermediate collector and the pictures are exquisite but somehow the lack of detail in the narrative portions undermines the supossed purpose of the book. To its credit the book is nicely arranged by subject but lacks a comprehensive glossary. Overall, not a bad place to start whet your appetite for knowledge about vintage linens, but if you want detailed informtion supported by anyting more than cursory research you will put the book down hungry. ~ Sincerly, Ann Christine ~ thelinenlady

As a valuable addition to any lace collector or lace historian's library, this book fits right inbetween Earnshaw's Lace Identification and Elizabeth's smaller simpler volume "A Pocket Guide to Lace and Linens."
The macro photographs of each lace are clear and sharp making it possible to count the number of twists in a particular stitch and identify exactly which features are the identifiable characteristic of each lace. Elizabeth's valuation system for the monetary value and collectability of each type of lace is informative and well reasoned.
For the would be collector, this book along with Earnshaw's are the ones to have at home while the pocket guide is the one to take with you to the flea markets and antique fairs. Not only will you be able to knowledgably indentify what you have, but you will be able to discern how difficult the stitches and techniques are, when and where the lace was probably made and its relative value on today's market.

This book has one or more pages describing each type of lace. The varieties are extensive. It is so clear and easy to understand what makes each lace unique. The first book I reccomend for those wanting to know about lace!!

I MUST AGREE WITH THE FIRST TWO REVIEWS 100%. BUT I BOUGHT IT ANYWAY, TO ADD TO MY MANY OTHER BOOKS. THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT WAS THE PHOTOS. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE UNLESS THEY JUST WANT TO SKIM OVER IT AND ADD IT TO A COLLECTION THEY MAY HAVE.
Small and thus easy to carry for a ready reference........1999-03-05
That the author loves linens is obvious from her narratives. There are some tips on care and history that are worthwhile. Many of the identifications are misleading, and the prices quoted are most frequently inaccurate. The descriptions, although vague, may be a useful starting point for the novice or casual collector, I would not refer this to anyone as a definitive work, but it is useful as an entry level reference.
Bevy of examples covering many styles but inaccurate prices........1999-01-10
First 28 pages are well-written, lyrical descriptions but not terribly historically informative. While there is an extremely wide range of items shown, many photos are reproductions which lose much in the process.
Identification of types is very spotty with even the obvious (hardanger and filet) listed only as drawn work or 'beautifully crocheted corners'. Dating of items seemed fairly accurate but pricing was "not of this earth". Most dollar amounts could easily be halved and one collar on page 43 listed at $55-60 I purchased for $8 from a knowledgable dealer.
This book is useful as an addendum to the library of a serious collector. It is however, of little value to the novice or student because it lacks identifying criteria and the pictures are not high enough quality to decipher detail.

I just give it 3 stars, but it is what it says. The "Little"... This book is in a microformat. No photos, just some illustrations, but it give you an idea how you can make vintage bodice.

The Little Bodice Book shows how to take a mid-20th century bodice pattern with bust darts and decorate it to give the impression of historical style. This is a fine book for school and community theater. It should be especially helpful for the novice seamstress who wants a Halloween or party costume. Re-enactors and others who need histoically correct construction and reproduction techniques should seek elsewhere.

Covers basic bodice construction thoroughly with enough detail in the instruction to support basic theater or festival-type needs. Shows in b/w hand-drawn diagrams how to modify the basic pattern to depict different classes of bodices, in the eras of 1600 (Elizabethan), 1650 (Restoration), 1770 (Rococo), and Victorian. A simple size and measurement chart and pattern dimensions for a basic size 8 bodice simplify the decision of how big to cut the pieces. Detailing info includes making/using covered cording, grommets, size-adjustable bodices, placket openings, sleeve and cuff variations, sleeve cap additions, and boning placement. Emphasis is on construction, not historical reference, and the author has obviously gone through many bodices step-by step. Professionals will not find much here to get excited about, but if you're just trying to build yourself a costume without hiring a dressmaker, or are a wardrobe volunteer for community theater, this itty bitty workbook will be just the thing you need to walk you through the process. If you've looked in catalogs for period patterns, you know they're about three times the cost of this book (when they're available), and their instructions tend to be hit or miss. Save yourself the long wait for pattern shipment and be guided through the bodice-building process with no pain and lots of confidence-boosting diagrams. Caveat: brand new sewers shouldn't start here - instead take a basic class or enlist a talented friend to do the sewing. This book doesn't have an elementary glossary or substitute for a rudimentary knowledge of sewing, but intermediate sewers will do fine. And it's small enough to tuck into your purse when you head to the fabric store, so your fabric requirements are right there handy. All in all, well written and drawn. This would be the book I'd lend to a friend about to make her first period bodice.
A Concise reference for the Theatrical Costumer.......1999-09-03
This book is great for the person limited on time and space for costumes. It shows how to transform a basic shape into several different looks depending on the details. Elizabethan, Rococo, Restoration and some Victorian are all covered briefly. Don't be shocked about how small it is. There is a lot compacted into this little reference guide.

You'll be wide-eyed with amazement at the comprehensiveness of Wayne Hemingway's book. Page after page of real pop art. This stuff sold in the millions and some of it probably still is. Mainly seen from a British and Continental perspective, so no poker playing dogs by CM Coolidge, the book rightly kicks off in the fifties with the king of kitsch Vladimir Tretchikoff and his painted ladies and then meanders through crying boys, street urchins, doe-eyed pets and ends with what I thought was nice touch, the British poster company Athena in the late eighties.
Despite the fact that these paintings were very popular with the working class as far as I can see very few of the artists are particularly good. Being popular does not equate with professionalism for this market segment. None of them seem to have the draughtsmanship of, for example, Norman Rockwell or Charles Wysocki. These pop art reproductions probably sold in their millions because they displayed the right sort of sentimental image and were pre-framed and cheap, obviously the perfect buy.
The book is a pop art production itself I thought. Many of the pages use eighties wallpaper as a background for the text and paintings and someone had the bright idea of tipping in several of the paintings as removal prints (though I wonder how many book owners removed them?) so you'll be able to have your own gallery above the mantelpiece.

Remember those sad big-eyed animals,the misfit and street urchin paintings,the crying children, Tretchikoff's Green Lady and 50's exotic women, the voluptuous South Sea Island brunettes of JH Lynch, the cute Maio girls with cats or mandolins, and those little Go Go kids by Eve or Lee. You do? Well this book is full of such mass market art memories, a popular art genre never before acknowleged or given respect in such a glorious way. Don't tell me it's not art!.......2002-01-07
Neat treatment of the subject that mercifully ISN'T loaded with campy, "hip" contempt or irony. Hemingway genuinely likes this stuff and so do I. American readers will be entertained because much of this is British or European mass-market art that wasn't as popular here, but should have been! I'm amazed at the selection British big-eyes paintings that are such odd relations to their Keaney American cousins. The book has a great design with several of the lithos duplicated "post-it" style over their pages in the book so you can take them out and frame them yourself while keeping the book intact. Unfortunately they're not necessarily the ones I would have picked, like the Tretchikoffs, probably for copyright reasons. Come on, manufacturers, take a tip from Hemingway's book and let's bring back the days of saucer-eyed kidz, bright oil-painting colors and .... as accents for the living room!

Andy Warhol understood the conflict between the tastes of the masses and what's considered "Good Art" by the cognoscenti. His soup can and Marilyn Monroe took common icons and created pop icons instantly. This was one of the 20th Century's most brilliant comments on "us" and the world of art. The conflict between the rarified world of fine art and popular art is really fascinating, and this book hits the mark.
King of Kitsch Hemmingway does a great job here of describing various popular artworks and why they've made the transition from "bad" to "beloved." A fun book, and a great concept, complete with peel-off art for your very own.
Outstanding........2001-01-18
Flipping through this book one day, I was shocked, or rather, surprised to finally look at a painting I'd seen featured in two favorite films: Performance (1970) and Frenzy (1972) and also used on the first Sound Gallery CD cover. I remembered this painting growing up yet never knew who the artist was. So naturally, I bought the book.
The English have a habit of fondly holding on to the past, at least when it comes to pop culture. This book certainly does that. Crammed full of incredible artwork form people once considered disposable, yet now highly reveered. The text is somewhat hard to read and not particularly extensive, but its almost irrelevant. What matters are the gorgeous reproductions of the art. And many of them are printed twice so you can peel them off for future framing - what a great idea!
If you can appreciate 'trash' for what its worth and have a passion for some truly amazing art, this book is absolutely worth buying. Within time, I predict some of these artists will be considered downright hip and adored by the right people, but still, this book is great. Take a look in the attic, one of these paintings may be there...

Ronnie Spector is more interesting when she was young and a Ronnette as opposed to when she got older. The first half of the book was fascinating, especially from the music history point of view. Once she seperated from Phil Spector, it was not that interesting.
Since the book was updated, I would have liked to hear a lot more about the homicide at Phil Spector's hosue as well as how Joey Ramone's relationship with her.
If you are a fan of Ronnie SPector than this is an enjoyable read.
The Best Music Bio I've Read!.......2003-12-12
I've been in love with this woman and her music ever since I saw The Ronettes live at The Brooklyn Fox Theatre in 1964. I was only 15 years old at the time. If you love Ronnie Spector as much as I do, then do yourself a favor and buy this book. It isn't only about music. It is about courage, and the ability to overcome barriers. Very inspirational. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Like so many other baby boomers I grew up listening to the likes of many girl groups, doo wop, early British and American rock as well as buble gum pop of both East and West coast origin. In high school I fell in love with the sound of one of these girl groups. The voice, the smooth moves and grooves of the greatest of these groups kept me longing for more. I couldn't buy enouph of anything relating to The Ronnets. When I stumbled on this book by accident, some 7 years ago, I thought hmmm, no accident, I am destined to read and know more about my musical Lady heroine.
In this read, I learned more about Ronnie than I ever dreamed I might. I took a trip back in time and found it difficult to put this book down. I felt her pains and gains, and I grew to know more about her than I probably wanted to, after all I had been in love with the likes of this Fabulous Ronnet for so long, that it was often cause for discomfort. I learned so much about other musicians and singers from that era as well, to think that Ronnie hung out with the likes of some of them.
This is a must read for someone who thought they knew a thing or two of a time gone by and its musical influence and the people who helped make it what it was. If ever Rock-101 were taught in any format, this book need-be included.
Worth 10 Stars-Required Reading for Ronnie Spector Fans!.......2003-02-06
This book is even more timely to read now that Ronnie's ex-hubby Phil Spector was arrested the other day for the murder of a woman in his house. It gives great insight not only into Ronnie's life story and rise to stardom but also into Phil's personality and temperament. While there is absolutely no doubt of Phil's musical genius, the man was(and possibly still is)mentally unstable(he claims to be bipolar and does not like to take his meds). I first bought and read this book when it first came out years ago but it is still a great read, one of the very best rock-bios around. It is also a great companion piece to Darlene Love's autobiography. If you are a fan of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, both books are essential reading. Very highly recommended.

For Ronnie Spector fans everywhere, this book has it all. Her early days in New York City, the beginning of the Ronettes, their spectacular number 1 hit BE MY BABY, her nightmare of booze and obsession while married to that creep Phil Spector, and her triumphant return to her first love of music and singing. If you want a fascinating look at the girl groups in Rock and Roll history, then you want to read this book. She writes in a down-to-earth way that makes you feel like a good friend is telling you a heart-wrenching story of pain and loss, of fear and courage. Good going, Ronnie! We love you.

They wore the highest hair, and heels, and the shortest, tightest skirts when the Ronettes, lead singer Ronnie Bennett, first burst upon the girl group scene in the early 1960's. And their dancing: well, nobody stepped as high. They were the only girl group ever to tour with the Rolling Stones. They signed with music producer Phil Spector: at his famed Los Angeles Gold Star studios, he invented the "wall of sound" technique, backing rock singers with full orchestral sound; he wrote several monster hits for them: "Be My Baby," "Walking in the Rain," and "Baby I Love You," and they achieved mega-stardom.
Then Ronnie, rock's original bad girl, half-American Indian, half Puerto Rican, and a proud product of New York's East Harlem barrio, as were the cousins who backed her, married New York's Bronx-born Spector. He became increasingly eccentric, reclusive, and violent. She became a solo star, when and if he would let her out of the house, or the castle, as the case might be, in a marriage that drove her literally to drink -- Manischevitz, the sweetest drink she could find. It was an epically bad marriage, as people might guess who are following Phil Spector's current Los Angeles trial for murdering a woman that wanted to leave the castle.
But Ronnie busted out, endured some tough times -- Phil, who had written her greatest hits, wouldn't allow her to sing them in performance. She beat the alcoholism, and finally found her way back to her career, and, perhaps more importantly to her, to creating the family she'd always wished for.
Ronnie has given us, and continues to give us, a lot. In his introduction to this autobiography, Long Island born Billy Joel tells us that as teenagers, he and his friends always knew they were going to get lucky with the girls when "Be My Baby" boomed out of the jukebox. I've been lucky enough to see her live, several times, once at an outdoor summer concert at New York's World Trade Center, no longer on the skyline, as we all know, and watched a thousand people singing -- "For every kiss you give me, I'll give you three--" and dancing along with her: including a man who appeared to be African by his dress, dancing, transfigured, on top of a big urn.
Her autobiography, written with Vince Waldron, with a Foreward by Cher, and the Introduction by Billy Joel, is honest, open, and informative about the good years, and the bad. It stands on its own, as a good read.
