Book Description

The Fall of Heartless Horse is a postmodern multigenerational family drama that is dark, hilarious, moving and wildly original. By turns lyric, comic, tragic and absurd, it deals with greed, inheritance, heroism, internecine intrigue, capitalism, sex, and the intertwining of public and private history.

Martha Kinney has won the following literary awards: Menn Prize for Fiction, Olin Poetry Award, Elizabeth Jones Writing Scholarship, and Pazo Mayberry Poetry Award. She has had poetry published in Columbia: a Journal of Literature and Art, Pearl, Luna, The Bitter Oleander, Five AM and has poetry forthcoming in the anthology Airfare (Sarabande Books).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Very Very Cool Book!.......2004-10-14

Listen. I like poetry and I like to read it. Ms. Kinney's experimental prose is more poetic and beautiful than a random sample of a hundred poetry books combined. This book is sweet and hilarious and absurd and touching. Her language is as crisp as a Chuck Berry guitar solo. I think it's great. My guess is that she's a poet in disguise and she somehow slipped this wonderful story of Heartless Horse, Mrs. Heartless Horse, Tadiscule, Ambuscule, Minuscule, the lost daughter, the grandchildren , their lovers, and the ham (that's right, ham) through the curtains of prose and found herself on stage alone, standing positively apart from anything we're bored with. I think it's as fun to read as anything I've ever read. If you like wild, heartbreaking, otherworldly poetry, than this is the book for you. If you don't, this book might change your mind.

I'm just waiting for her next book.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary retelling.......2004-10-27

This trilogy by Persia Woolley, which includes Child of the Northern Spring, Queen of the Summer Stars, and The Legend in Autumn, is well worth reading. Among the plethora of feminine centric Arthur retellings, I thought this trilogy was second only to The Mists of Avalon, which is the best Arthurian novel I've read, period. Neither a simpering bauble like Marion Zimmer Bradley's queen, nor a bitter shrew, as she is depicted in Rosalind Miles' trilogy, the High Queen in this series is a strong woman, bold, intelligent, compassionate, and well worth the love of two legendary heros. My only complaint with the character is this: Woolley saw fit to make her Guenevere homely, not the great beauty of legend, and Guenevere is supposed to be the fairest of the fair. Otherwise, this trilogy gets my highest recommendation. It is much better than the other Guenevere trilogies out there (by Miles and Newman). If you like this one, you might also enjoy Queen of Camelot by Nancy McKenzie.

5 out of 5 stars At Last, Camelot from Gwen's Point of View!.......2003-01-05

I love reading the Arthurian Legends from a "woman's point of view." I loved Mists of Avalon because of that feature, and I adored these books about Guinevere. I knew there had to be more to her than traditional Camelot portrayals! I am surprised the 3 books in this series are out of print. I was lucky enough to find the first 2 (Child of the Northern Spring one year and Queen of the Summer Stars the next year) in hardcover on a clearance book cart at 2 different locations! What a treat! I had to order this final one in paperback. Each time I got the next book I went back and re-read the previous one, until finally, when I bought Legend in Autumn I re-read all 3 one after the other. I was sorry to see it end. I am not sure if Persia Woolley will write anymore, but if she does I am certainly a fan. Thanks for a great series!

4 out of 5 stars Despite flaws, a strong ending to the trilogy.......2002-08-11

This is a good book--even though it perpetuates the flaws seen in Woolley's previous Guinevere books, _Child of the Northern Spring_ and _Queen of the Summer Stars_. Woolley's Guinevere still has a habit of distancing herself from the story, briskly rattling off the legendary happenings like an anchorwoman for the Camelot Nightly News. Woolley's desire to tell the Arthurian legend without the use of "magic" or "fantasy" still results in cumbersome and byzantine plot devices as the author attempts to explain magical events without the magic. Her characters still borrow heavily from other authors--Cai is straight out of Phyllis Ann Karr, and Morgan is a twisted reflection of Bradley's Morgaine. But all of this aside, this is still a good book.

In _The Legend in Autumn_, the dream of Camelot begins to fall apart. There are quarrels--Guinevere and Lancelot fight bitterly over Elaine of Carbonek, whom Lancelot accidentally slept with. And Mordred, whose best friend is a Saxon captive, comes to believe the Saxons are basically OK, and wants to include them in the Round Table--but Arthur, veteran of countless Saxon wars, holds his old prejudices dear, and refuses his son's request. And into this tumultuous court comes the young bard Taliesin, singing of the Grail, and the Round Table warriors begin to scatter to the four winds in search of the mysterious object.

Woolley deftly describes the tale told by each returning knight; she does a great job of showing how the Grail means different things to different people, and what sort of meaning each man finds. (And woman, too, for Guinevere will find her own personal Grail by the end of the story.)

Also wonderfully done was the treatment of Guinevere's punishment for adultery. The usual retelling shows Arthur standing by heartlessly as his Queen is sentenced to the stake, and Lancelot ruthlessly killing his friends to save her. Woolley has a more complicated but more believable theory about what reall happened behind the scenes, one that rings true to the characters of the brave Queen, the idealistic King, and the deadly but good-hearted knight. I won't give it away, but it's good.

After Lancelot makes away with Guinevere, they flee to Joyous Gard, where they live simply and happily--until the threat of war looms. Guinevere is supported by the counsel of Isolde of Cornwall, who has grown wiser since her star-crossed love affair with Tristan, and together they see what must be done. Far from being the downfall of Camelot, Guinevere will now give her all to save it.

This book ought to be remembered, above all, for its sensitive portrayal of the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot love triangle. Gwen and Lance truly have a love for the ages, but Gwen also shares a special bond with Arthur, which holds Camelot together more than they realize. Guinevere is the human touch that balances Arthur's ideals.

5 out of 5 stars best series ever.......2002-06-19

This book was FANTASTIC!!! I am an avide reader, and can honestly say that the three books in this series were the best I have read in many years. I laughed and cried and sat up till the wee hours of the morning not wanting to put down these books. The storie put such an increadable spin on the King Arthur tails, and made me want to read everything I can find on the ancient Celts.
The only negative thing I could say about the series is that it is probably more of a "Chic" book than something a guy would get into.

5 out of 5 stars Painful, dramatic and magical!.......2001-01-17

This is the last book of Persia Woolley's trilogy of Guinevere. It is a masterful ending for a very original work. It sheds new light on the characters, making this book a very beautiful novel, a remarkable retelling of King Arthur's legend. Guinevere here is shown as a very strong celtic queen, with such problems as a real woman can have, added to the royal troubles and the historical facts that surrounded the people of that time. Now, she has become a very important person in the court's life, the very support of her husband's personal life and kingdom. Mature, she lives her life with that passion, hurting herself sometimes, but always with that real queenly spirit and vivacity, making her end and Camelot's almost too painful to read. Dramatically portrayed, I cried, I felt her emotions and loved the characters, that with her, created and lived the history of Camelot.

From the dream team of Alan Moore (Watchmen, Promethea) and Alan Davis (Avengers, Miracle Man) comes a supremely deranged duo. Titan Books is proud (and should be ashamed) to present D.R & Quinch!

Outrageous, unrestrained and heavily armed, college students D.R & Quinch gleefully provide irredeemably poor role-modelling for today's youth. Wildly offensive tales of alien slime wars, deranged disaster movies, psychotic girlfriends and warped war veterans make for a volatile mix of malicious mayhem and deeply dark humour. Totally intense, man!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Violent, Demented and Funny.......2003-04-23

    D. R. and Quinch originally appeared in a British comic book/magazine called "2000 AD". (The same publication that spawned "Judge Dredd", among others.) It was written by Alan Moore, one of the better comic book writers of all time. (He is known for such comics as "From Hell" and "League of Extrordinary Gentlemen" (both made into films), as well as "The Watchmen", making "Swamp Thing" into an interesting comic, among others.

This is one of his lesser known works.

    D. R. and Quinch are a couple of alien juvenile delinquents that make anyone out of the "Wild Bunch" look like Prozac munching vegitarians. They maim and kill entire civilizations just for the fun of it. However, the destruction is so over the top and the targets of satire so broad that it is not just mayhem for the sake of mayhem.

Alan Davis' art adds to the atmosphere. His aliens are all bizzare creatures that have traits that you will still recognize. (There is a pretty savage parody of Marlin Brando in one of the stories.)

Highly recommended. I am glad these stories are still in print.

The first Whole Foods Market, selling only minimally processed natural and organic products, opened in 1980. In response to all the customers who ever asked, "How do I cook this?", chef Steve Petusevsky and the Whole Foods Market team members present The Whole Foods Market Cookbook, an enormous collection of healthy recipes, filled with comprehensive explanations and descriptions.

Many of the recipes are longtime customer favorites. The "Big and Small Salads" chapter includes Sonoma Chicken Salad, a bestseller made with sweet red grapes, crunchy pecans, and a creamy, sweet-and-sour poppy seed dressing. Thirty-five soups and chilis include a heartwarming Roasted Corn Poblano Chowder and a rich, fragrant Sweet Potato Chili. There are a multitude of vegetarian and vegan recipes in every chapter, all clearly marked, and even if that's not what you're looking for they'll have you thinking differently about healthy eating. Try the vegan Lentil and Mushroom Tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, or the vegetarian Spicy Roasted Eggplant with Sesame Honey, delicious as a side dish or sandwich topping, or as a main course served with noodles or rice.

If you've ever looked for more ways to use tofu (try the Kung Pao), seitan, millet, quinoa, or mung bean sprouts, or if you'd rather make meals heavy on flavor and nutrition and light on fat and artificial additives, The Whole Foods Market Cookbook offers 350 delicious, well-tested solutions. --Leora Y. I must agree with the other reviewers who desperately tried to like this cookbook. The recipe titles sound delicious, Whole Foods sells beautiful ingredients, but put the two together and it's neither beautiful nor delicious. There are errors in ingredients, measurements, cooking times and, most importantly, judgement. Some of these dishes should have gone straight to the trash. Maybe now that Whole Foods has purchased Wild Oats, they'll incorporate some of the recipes from Wild Oats' website into a revised edition of this book. It needs them.

I checked this book out from the library and after making a number of recipes I have decided to buy it. The information the book gives about individual ingredients is very helpful, and I like the Whole Foods attitude toward food. So far I have not discovered mistakes, as other reviewers have noted (which is not to say they aren't there), and have found the recipes easy to follow.

4 out of 5 stars Great wholesome food.......2007-01-09

We have tried several recipes so far and have enjoyed them all. Be warned though - most of the recipes are pretty labor intensive. If you have the time the results are worth the effort. Nice change of pace from the typical mainstream cookbook.

1 out of 5 stars Yikes! Errors Galore!.......2006-10-13

This is an amazing cookbook but for the 100 or so needed corrections that Whole Foods has listed on its website. I could read this book for hours, it really has some delicious and creative healthful recipes. Unfortunately, I've learned not to go beyond READING it, as I've wasted grocery cash and time finding out that the proof (reading) was not in the "putting" for Whole Foods editorial staff! Wait till the much-needed revised edition comes out!

I thought the book was excellent. I loved her style, not too dry, very humorous. It was a very quick easy read, and had great ideas for starting a new business. Lots of help and references. The best book I've read on the topic. I'm brand new in the business and I based my business planning on her book. I also had the opportunity to meet the author, and she is a great person, very helpful. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Pet Sitting for Profit.......2006-07-22

This is the Third Edition of an excellent book on the business aspects of pet sitting. Author Patti Moran is one of the pioneers in this field and she provides a wealth of useful information. Be aware that this information is primarily for business aspects of pet sitting - guiding you through everything from phone lines to forms. It does NOT provide information on pet care - assuming that you are already somewhat competent since you are itnerested in this field.
Filled with "real life" experience, Ms Moran covers office procedures, insurance, advertising and marketing.
The chapter on Getting Started will be extremely useful for someone starting up a pet sitting business with a work force of one - namely you :) Much of the rest of the book is geared for the pet sitting business that has expanded to multiple employees. Still, that is an area where many dog businesses fail - right when they expand.
This book is an excellent resource for anyone with a dog business. Much of the businees savvy advice could apply to any dog themed business.
This book is well worth its price for the budding entrepeneur

2 out of 5 stars An okay guide -- but not the ONLY one to have in your arsenal.......2006-02-27

First, a full disclosure -- I run my own pet-sitting business and I'm a happy, paid member of Patti's organization, Pet Sitters Internaitonal (PSI). She's a good business woman who had the sense to get out of the industry and create alliances to help those in the industry. Second disclosure, I run an organization geared directly toward helping petsitters start and run a successful business so that they can enjoy their life, work with great clients and retire happy.

Now, onto the review. I bought this book about 6 months after I started sitting full-time. I had already bought, read and devoured Lori and Scott Mangold's book.

This book was a disappointment to me -- it had been touted for so long by so many that I know and respect as THE BIBLE of pet-sitting. So, I guess I was expecting fireworks and drumrolls. None of that is here.

It's basic. It's not quite a how-to and definitely not the Complete Manual for Professional Success. But then, a complete manual would need to be much larger and more expensive.

There are alot of ambiguities as noted by other reviewers and I really wish there was a more extensive Appendix listing places to get information regarding licensing, insurance, employees vs ICs etc. for each state.

But, there's still a good overview of the business here. So it's worth having in your library -- I just wouldn't depend on this as my sole guide to starting and running a successful pet-care business.

3 out of 5 stars No longer the GURU of pet sitting - many others now........2005-09-10

I get the impression that Patti wrote her book and her information after being in business for many years. She is knowledgeable about the business. But her materials are often based on the premise that you have lots of start-up funds (and plan to afford an accountant, web site designers, trademarking, S-Corp designation, etc) and LOTS of employees. The fact is most pet sitters just don't use these things in the beginning, and having a reasonable budget is important the first year. And for those of us in the business now, computers are a HUGE factor in streamlining our business. She doesn't say much about these in the copy I have.

The average sitters doesn't start up with a trademark or employees, and most start as sole proprioterships (much less paperwork). Her Pet Sitting For Profit book does mention that most of these things are optional so that's good.

Other info can be rather ambiguous. For example, under "Business Licenses" it says "check to see if you need a business license". It would be nice if she could specify why and the details (some states require you to be licensed for particular industries, and others don't. Others require registration of your busines name by city, or state. Others require you to get a sales tax #. All this is important, and you should understand it in detail) and more info on where to go.

Other debateable topics (like magnets on your cars or advertising on t-shirts) aren't listed as something you need to think about in depth (for instance, magnets on your cars can be a deterrent to some clients who don't want it highlighted that they may not be home). I couldn't find discussions on the big questions, like should I collect payment before or after the sit (maybe I just missed it??? Have it in front of my but still can't find anything about payments?).

So if you are looking for a book that will help you get thinking about the right topics and you plan to have lots of employees, maybe start here. The book is very affordable.

And you have to kind of breeze past all her advertisements for her other availabe items. General consensus from us sitters already in the biz is that they are overpriced.

I recommend "The Professional Pet Sitter" by Lori & Scott Mangold. It's geared more towards beginners, and I really like the organization much better. Their form samples are limited, but can get you thinking in the right direction.

Then check out forms and other info available on Ebay for "Pet Sitting". You can find great, complete form packs as low as $5, and full startup kits for under $40. Try searching Google also - some great stuff out there that can be VERY helpful. Always see a sample of forms before you buy - and check out feedback to be sure you are getting something good.

Edited 2006 to add: The version of this book that I have is fairly old. There is a new version coming out 5/2006 that will hopefully be more current. (?)

            Book Description

Many glossy interiors books celebrate the joys of loft living or focus on beautiful houses in glamorous locations. However, for many people around the world, home is not a loft, nor a Tuscan palazzo, but an apartment. This invaluable book responds to the challenge that apartment living offers, inspiring you to create an elegant but highly practical home.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars These apartments are not like any in which I have ever lived.......2002-12-15

The only way a person could have one of the apartments in this book is if they were a character on Friends or a stockbroker on Wall street. The style is a mix of modern and traditional. The photos are beautiful. However, what you can take from this book may be limited and may depend upon your purpose.

            Recommendation:
If you are looking for a book on decorating tips and projects to improve your apartment, then skip this book. If you were wondering how the other half live or want to be inspired, then try this book.

              Book Description

The photographs that fill the endpapers of this 50-year retrospective show Larry Rivers between takes of Pull My Daisy with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg; then leaning against a car with a Speedo-wearing Frank O'Hara; posing thoughtfully with Kenneth Koch; and playing sax at the Blue Bird. Facsimiles of creased and dog-eared review clippings include midcentury New York Times, Herald Tribune and ArtNews raves, and a 1997 Times piece crediting Rivers with bringing back "handmade" art. A soft-edged aesthetic permeates his work, never contradicting the symmetry and glamour that led to the burst of late twentieth century and early twenty-first century high-fashion illustration that closes the book.

              Book Description

The long-overdue retrospective of figurative painter Larry Rivers, a pioneer of Pop art whose eclectic career has spanned a half century and bridged the art worlds of New York and Paris. In association with the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Bulfinch Press is publishing the first major retrospective of Larry Rivers. Rivers, one of the original Pop artists on the 1950s art scene, is known for his bold and eclectic style. Inspired by sources as diverse as the impressionists, Napoleon, and Hollywood movies, Rivers' work shows a keen sense of history and an adventurous spirit. He was active not only in the visual arts but also in jazz, poetry, and theater. Rivers was a pivotal figure linking together the art scenes in Paris and New York. Still going strong at age 76, he remains a strong presence in the art scene of South Hampton, New York, where he lives and works.

I think, feel this book is vivid in its art and recollections of the man as i knew him....my mother was married to larry for years and he was a wild character which needs to be seperated from the wild artists he was...his works are incredible as the book well depicts and my grandmother, Birdie, looks beautiful as featured in his paintings of her within these colorful pages of a colorful if not flawed genuis....but it is to be seen, read and left to the viewer for a final assertation.

                Book Description

Auguste Rodin's extraordinary watercolors are generally less familiar to the public than his grandiose bronzes which set standards for later generations of sculptors. Yet these studies, executed with apparent ease, are no less significant as works of art--indeed, their enthusiastic naturalism and openness make them almost more timeless and modern than his sculptures. In addition to preliminary watercolor studies for his 3-dimensional works, this section of Rodin's oeuvre includes a large number of erotic silhouettes, some of them quite explicit: cheerful, warm-hearted sketches with which the artist unabashedly papered the walls of his studio. This small volume presents a delightful selection of rarely-exhibited yet enchanting watercolors from the artist's estate, administered by the Musae Rodin in Paris.

                        Book Description

Over a period of four decades, Drs. Melvin Blake and Frank Purnell built a remarkable collection of works by some of the most prominent modernist and contemporary artists in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Guided by their personal taste and a clear preference for figurative art, they acquired over 100 distinguished works, almost none of which belongs to the abstract movements that dominated the art scene during these same years. Taken as a whole, the collection contains a wealth of contrasts and similarities, while the works taken individually are rewarding for their particular expressive features. A Singular Vision features 45 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and pastels from the collection, illustrated in full color, along with an informal discussion of the works independently and as a group. Among the masterpieces presented are works by Paul Delvaux, Rena Magritte, R. B. Kitaj, Fernando Botero, Larry Rivers, Domenico Gnoli, Lucien Freud, Claudio Bravo, Antonio LApez Garc'a, and many others. Each artist is working according to his or her own singular, provocative vision, but each finds a home, and a context, in the remarkable Blake-Purnell collection.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        4 out of 5 stars MFA's Gift Creates a Stir in Boston.......2003-06-21

Melvin Blake and Frank Purnell were avid art collectors. At the time of their death, many of their art works were willed to Boston's Museum of Fine Art and have become part of the museum's permanent collection. To honor this gift, the museum had a special showing of their work and issued this book as a commentary and companion to the exhibit. Most of the pieces in the collection are twentieth century works. There is great variety in this collection. The collection has a number of nude works, but the people depicted in the paintings and sketches are hardly glamorous which adds a certain intrigue to them. Perhaps the most interesting work in the collection is Vanitas by Claudio Bravo. This work depicts a man from Tangier sleeping while his son blows bubbles. The man looks almost like a monk and the son a choir boy. A close second would be Antonio Lopez Garcia's Lavabo y Espejo which depicts a bathroom sink. The painting is both simple and striking. This book exposes people to these relatively unknown works of modern art and the written commentary of the book is very helpful an introduction to the artists featured as well as a testimony to the generosity of the Blake and Purnell estate.

                              Book Description

For the first half of the twentieth century, Texas literature, culture, and folklore were dominated by J. Frank Dobie, the man Lon Tinkle called "Mr. Texas." Dobie's Texas was a land of exuberance and romance, a time when Texas was proud of itself and not loath to let the world know it.

But the culture of the state changed in the 1960s, and the figure who replaced Dobie as the dominant Texas writer and literary icon was Larry McMurtry. The Texas of Larry McMurtry is a far different landscape. The old certainties were replaced by irony and cultural revolution. The high, wide, and handsome posture of Texans was muted by politics, student unrest, and war. In the first two essays in this volume--"The Age of Dobie" and "The Age of McMurtry"--James Ward Lee places the writers, the politicians, and the cultural leaders in the context of each age.

Subsequent chapters discuss writers and trends in Texas literature. Lee discusses long-standing arguments about Texas literature and surveys bodies of work that have had an impact on it.

Another part of the book looks at Texas folklore and culture. "The Uses of Folklore," "The Folkways of the Arklatex," "Texas: Land of Legends and Myths," and "The Texas Sidekick" all study the way Texans live and work and see the world.

The final section of the book is made up of some personal essays by a man whose ideas and attitudes are sometimes odd but always humorous. Lee writes of the life he has led in Texas as a college professor and takes a backward look at his life from boyhood to service in the U.S. Navy.
