I am very fond of Southern writing.My favotrite is Erskine Caldwell. "Tobacco Road" and "God's Little Acre" are the most well known; but he wrote about 30 other novels as well as numerous short stories.Tennessee Williams and Faulkner are also high on my favorite list. When I saw this book ,the title really didn't grab my attention,what caught my eye was the line at the top of the book;"As mystic and miraculous as Faulkner and Marquez. A novel so fine you don't want it to ever end."
That is a pretty big claim,and because of my love of the earthy southern way of life,I just couldn't pass it by.
Well,what a pleasant surprise.I loved the book and I wholeheartedly agree ;I didn't want it to end either.
Watson has a wonderful skill of observation and a fantastic ability to describe people and their thinking,desires,fears
hopes,and all other aspects of living and their relations with one another as they go about their trials and tribulations of everyday living.
Either he has an unusual imagination,or he has molded his characters in part or whole on people he has known. I suspect it is a combination of both. Anyway,his writing is so convincing ,that one actually gets the feeling that Mercury and these salt of the earth people are real.
As I read the book,I found myself pauseing and trying to visualize the people,scenes,buildings,cemetary,and on and on.I have often wished that the author of a novel like this would include photos of real people that would portray his characters.Also pictures portraying buildings,vehicles,etc.
"Gone With the Wind",that great Southern novel,might be used as an example.When I think of that movie ;it is the vision of of Scarlet,Ashley,Butler,Pitipatand all the scenes like the hospital,the mansion,the burning of Atlanta,from the film that give such reality to the story.
Overall,I found this a great Southern novel and I fully intend to read more of Watson's writings.
How about this for great writing?
"Poisons invented by the white folks.Black folks don't need no poisons.
Why's that?
Well,sir,she said,we got the white folks,poison enough.Then she bared her gums,gave that little wheezy laugh.I reckon I can say that nowadays,cain't I.
I reckon you can say whatever you want to.
She nodded.

Subtle storytelling, gorgeous prose.......2004-01-28

Many of the negative reviews here seem focused on the disjointed narrative or - unbelievably - a supposed lack of plot. Perhaps those readers would be better served by the latest Patricia Cornwell novel, complete with inciting incident, rising action, climax, etc., all told in linear fashion, each event telegraphed to the reader by the event before it. I don't doubt that these same readers struggled through "plotless" books like The Sound and the Fury or Joseph Heller's Something Happened.

Watson is a subtle storyteller who reveals the truth about his characters through a few well-chosen stories from their lives, each rendered in pitch-perfect prose. He does not feel compelled to give us a summation of each character's entire life history, nor does he show us the entire internal world of every person in the book, and for that he is beaten up by readers who apparently are unfamiliar with Hemingway's iceberg principle.
As to the charge that the relationship between a black housemaid and her employer was drawn without subtlety, nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, this was one of the most nuanced and deeply-felt examples of human connection (or lack thereof) in the novel.
Most of the readers who lambasted the story in the novel at least gave Watson credit for his brilliant writing style, so I won't add anything there.
If you treasure southern literature, stories of abiding love, or ruminations on life, death and the hereafter, order this book now.

If this is heaven, give me hell.......2004-01-10

What do you say about a book whose crowning literary moment is the description of an 89-year-old man taking a dump in the bathroom? Then there's this lovely image of a horse: "A long, slow fart flabbered from the proud black lips of Dan's hole, and the smoke from it too trailed off in the air." Curiously, intellectuals praise The Heaven of Mercury for how it "illumines every accurate detail" and delivers "just-right words."

The Heaven of Mercury is part love story, part murder mystery, and part taste of the South. These parts combine into a dull and dreary text. The love story offers no payoff to the reader. The murder mystery fails outright. It is so loosely developed, there are no clues for the reader to pick up. In the end the omniscient narrator just tells some back story to explain the mystery. As for the taste of the South, it is bland at best.

The Heaven of Mercury does make a solid showing as a feminist text. In this book the men are weak, the women are strong.

Finally, The Heaven of Mercury is yet another example of how the academic mind disdains plot. Here the story is not told in a linear fashion. A character who dies in one chapter may be alive in the next. This book of 333 pages piddles along to a dubious crescendo (the bathroom scene) near page 200, then for the next 133 pages the author fills in gaps left by the first 200 pages.

INTERESTING AND WELL DONE.......2003-11-22

Wonderful discriptive writing. It takes a bit to get use to the author's syntax and punctuation peculiarities, but once you get over that, it is rather fun and refreshing. This work does have it's own rhythm and I rather like that. I like the way the author has take very "ordinary" people, and told a story, proving again, that there is merit and a tale in every life. I suppose many may be a bit put off as the the fact that the characters are not all that different from you and me, but that is one of the strong point of the work, I feel. I could not find one character in the book, that I have not meet in "real life" and that was kind of nice. I highly recommend this read and hope we get more of the same.

Wonderful descriptive power but..........2003-05-30

This author, a creative writing instructor, hits the jackpot with his luscious descriptive ability. That is almost, but not quite, enough to carry the reader happily through the convoluted and generally boring lives of his main characters, Finus and Birdie. In regards to form, Mr. Watson's interesting insistence on omitting quotation makes the dialogue refresing, thoug a little difficult to follow, and on at least one occasion I read two entire pages before I could figure out which character the narrative was about. In retrospect, a semi-satisfying work that needs a real story line and decent conflict resolution rather than just petering out in the end when everybody get around to dying.

It has been a long time since I've read a book with such an interesting, well put together story. I loved each of the characters. I know that this is a fictional story, but you kind of wonder if the author knows something we don't? The way it was written is just icing on the cake. Loved it!

On planet B'ruckley in the Shamballa Cluster, the protests for peace are growing though the natives are not involved except as observers. The local diplomatic corps wants to make no waves against the Peace Movement that could cost a careerist their job and pension even as the evidence grows that this group wants theTerrans to leave.

Second Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of the Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne Jame Retief finds the reaction of the Terran Diplomats normal as a bureaucrat's first job is to save one's flank. He has major concerns over the concept of leaving this plant without protection from alien invaders as the Peace Movement demands. Retief begins to make inquiries to determine who stands to gain the most if the seemingly innocent student protestors succeed and the Terrans depart until he concludes that the feral Krll want this orb without any real opposition. His peers need him out of the way so they can save their butts, but that will not stop Retief.

William H. Keith captures the essence of Keith Laumer's Retief in this fine satirical action-packed science fiction thriller. The story line is fast-paced, but owned by Retief who employs his own methods to insure the job is done correct. His understanding of the Terrans is priceless especially in light of what has happened with the hurricane though in the latter case the politicos and their appointees at all levels failed leading to CYA with bush league comments of not me - the others screwed up. RETIEF'S PEACE is a strong deep outer space entry in a wonderful series that timely highlights the objectives of the top layers of the bureaucracy within a mano a Krll confrontation.

This book is all silliness and satire. Retief is the very capable straight man in a world of send-ups of various stereotypes.

If puns don't offend you, you may well enjoy this book. It certainly made me smile.

Not recipes of Author.......2007-09-19

I have known and worked with Susanna Palazuelos over a period of 15 years while I lived in Acapulco. To what I was told these are NOT her recipes, but that of assistants and friends. She shouldn't get the glory for something that is not hers. Its just her name and reputation that got her name in this book. A previous reviewer also stated he was disappointed with this book since he tasted her catered meals before. Its not a mystery the rightful "owners" of the recipes are a combination of many individuals and not Susanna Palazuelos. I hope she shared the profit from these book sales. It would only be right to have done that. Shame on you Susanna. Also I want to note that Eduardo Wichtendahl is her son, who made a review of her book on this very page of reviews. Tsk, tsk, tsk.... I do think its a beautiful book with the photography, and the recipes are adequate to what I've known over the years. However, the recipes are not high in substance but do show the true authenticity of meals from the different regions. I must add that I love Rick Bayless and Diana Kennedy who have gone into the history of Mexican cuisines and have an actual passion for the cooking. Unlike Susanna who by her success in the catering industry just did this for the money since there is no passion in the book from her end.

This book is beautiful and packed with appealing recipes. The quality of the paper, the vivid photography, and the engaging travel writing combine to make this more than just a book of recipes. It's a book you'll pull out and thumb through while you think about where you want to go in Mexico.

Very, very Dissappointing.......2006-10-07

I like Susana Palazuelos, I enjoyed her meal at Izote in Mexico City...and have used her recipes, but I have no idea what she was doing for this book.

In my opinion, this was done when her vision was still quite immature. My main complaint about her recipes is that they are completely Creole Revisionist... in other words they are done from a very Spanish / Euro perspective... the Herb, Chile & Spice combinations have been extremely simplified & you really do not get to understand & appreciate the true genius of Mexican Cuisine. Its like a Spaniard revised all the recipes.

Truly dissappointing.... it should be embarrassing to here that Rick Bayless's books are a bit closer than this one.

this was a terrific book with lots of beautiful pictures and easy to follow recipes. there was something for everyone from novices to chefs. its great!!

Great Book, Very Informative.......2007-08-14

This book is fantastic, I held off on buying the first book that popped up on a Cairn search because the review mentioned how impersonal it was once they actually read it. I'm very glad I decided to get this book instead. Not only does it include what to generally expect when buying a puppy and raising a dog, the author also supplies his own personal insights into what to expect when buying this particular breed. He follows the life of your new Cairn from puppyhood to seniorhood. This book is fantastic and it's something to keep as a reference throughout the life of your new friend.

Buy Barrow's Cairn Terrier book.......2007-09-17

because it contains the most concise information and is also a good buy. When I sell my Cairn Terrier puppies, I always send a Barrow's Cairn Terrier book. The book is included with the purchase of the puppy to help the owner answer all their questions in regard to their new Cairn Terrier puppy. I also consult it myself for answers to questions. The pictures of the Cairn Terriers in the book are of good quality and variety.

I Wasn't at All Disappointed.......2007-02-17

This book wasn't exactly what I thought it would be like. It is very short and doesn't have lots of specific details. It is however an exellent source overall. One great thing about it not having lots of details is that it is short and very easy to read the entire thing rather than just skim certain sections. I found the grooming section very helpful and informative. However I would have liked a little more information in the training section. Also I would have liked more details in handling those difficult puppy moments such as when they try to bite. I loved that this book is completely tailored to the cairn terriers rather than it being a general dog book. I definitely was not disappointed.

This is a very informative book. It takes you from A - Z. It is also a great reference book. I would hightly reccomend this book to anyone who is thinking of adopting a Cairn Terrier. This is a good book for breeders to suggest for someone to read before adopting a Cairn.

I purchased this book after adopting a one year old Cairn Terrier. I feel the book has been very helpful in giving me insight into the breed in terms of training, grooming and socialization. A bonus is the beautiful photos found throughout the book. I would recommend this to all new Cairn owners or those contemplating a Cairn puppy.

A Little Disappointing.......2005-01-13

Considering the status of the author's kennel, I found the book to be a let-down. It honestly seemed like a generic book on dogs used as a template with only an added Cairn-specific paragraph or two at most per chapter. In the majority of the text it looks like the words "the dog" were just replaced with "the Cairn Terrier".

I was looking for much more from this author. For example in the chapter covering health issues, the advice on routine care for a Cairn's ears is "ask your veterinarian". Gee thanks! Isn't there any advice you could print to educate me as well? My vet isn't a Cairn breeder or owner, he really doesn't know a lot of breed-specific issues and that's what I'd hoped this book could provide. The same with grooming. The book just says that the Cairn is the "lazy man's terrier" as far as coat. Very little is given about the unique care and maintenance a Cairn's coat requires except a discussion of a name brand of stripping knife.

The photographs are lovely and abundant. The text is well written, and good basic information, it's just not deep with Cairn detail. There are a few spots where the author's love and knowledge of the breed shines out, for example in the discussion of obedience that says a Cairn's response to obedience commands ranges from "no" to "make me" to "make it worth my while".

All in all, a book worth having on my shelf but if I was using it to evaluate whether a Cairn was the dog for me or as my only reference for behavior and care issues, I'd feel I didn't have enough material.

great book!.......2004-08-18

this book is really good. i loved the variety in pictures (and so did my friends). it has the right amount of information and is organized well. i got this book one day before i bought my cairn terrier which i'd been considering getting and the information here really confirmed that this was the right dog for me. i am also going to get a training book but for those wanting to know about this breed this is a complete book. i highly recommend this !!

Unless you are going to breed or show, don't buy this book. Three of the chapters aren't even written by the author. Breeding history and standards make up most of the book. The functional sections give very little useful information.

This book is a must for all cairn enthusiasts, breeder and pet owner alike. Very comprehensive, covering all aspects of care and breeding. The quality of the hundreds of glossy, colored pictures is amazing. If you only have money to buy one cairn book, this is the one!

this book is one of the best books on the market in years. It is extremely well illustrated with gorgeous photos. It's easy to read and understand and yet is as comprehensive as the Cairn Terrier is complex. It belongs on the holiday list of every current or prospective Cairn owner.

All the reviews you post on this book are five stars. Why doesn't it come up when I search for Cairn Terriers? I had to search for Cairns and the author to get it to come up on your search. This is by far one of the best books I've seen on the Cairn Terrier in years. People won't be able to judge for themselves if they aren't offered the opportunity to buy it. It's extremely well illustrated and informative, has many excellent photos and, as a breeder of Cairn Terriers, I feel it should be on every Cairn owner's holiday list.

Not only does this make a great coffee table book with beautiful, high quality photos, but it is chock full of good information about this lovely breed. The section on grooming is especially informative.

Fuzzy Flowers.......2001-07-27

The title of this book should be "Fuzzy Flowers". I have never been so disappointed in receiving a flower arranging book!

Most of the color photographs of arrangements are taken in some kind of 'fog'. If this is done for some kind of artistic reason, one or two would be okay but to show almost every arrangement as though in a cloud of dust or out of focus is just unecessary. The arrangements themselves seem to be quite good if one could only discern their placement and color of flowers.

From a technical point of view, the text is useful and covers all one would need to know as a flower arranger.

I would not recommend this book to my friends and will give this one to my Garden Club.

Malcolm Hiller's book is an excellent resource for floral design. The pictures are great! There are flower and foliage guides by season which are very helpful when selecting flowers for big events. Mr. Hiller's arrangements are also very different and inspiring.

Fonseca, killed in battle in 1976, was the undisputed intellectual and strategic leader of the FSLN. Sandinista.......2003-10-03

Having lived trought the early years of the revolution in Nicaragua, althouhg just a child I got a first hand view of some of the struggles and dangers of the revolution. Because I was only a child I was not able to fully grasp the grand scheme of things and now as an adult I decided to begin reading about the revolution in Nicaragua and stubled upon this book.

The book gives a clear, no nonsense account of Carlos Fonseca. Who he was, how he was raised and what he stood for over the course of his life. A clear chronological order of events into his life is presented as well as the struggles the young rag tag band of rebels went trought.

If want to read an unbiased account into the revolution in Nicaragua and the role Carlos Fonseca played as leader of the FSLN then read this book. For me it shed light on some of the missing pieces about the revolution, the struggle and the ultimate outcome of the FSLN after the death of Fonseca.

Good reading.

This is the first book I read about Carlos Fonseca that has more accurate information about him, than any other book I have read.
I know this because I am the son of Raul Fonseca, but grew up with Carlos example and support. Carlos was the only father figure I ever had.

Quite a task Ms. Zimmermann. Congratulations.

This book pulls off a difficult feat, providing a balanced, neutral account of a subject about which supporters and opponents usually speak in strident, propagandistic terms.

Because of the absence of any preachy rhetoric, and the reliance on first-hand interviews and actual source documents, the author delivers a compelling portrait of a leader whose faithfulness to pure idealism in a struggle against a seemingly unstoppable evil system can be compared to that of Churchill, Gandhi, and King.

The Sandinistas were not the only group that took to the hills to arouse the populace in Latin America after the successful Cuban revolution, but they were the only group which actually came to power. Dr. Zimmermann's book is the story of the man who was the driving force behind the ideas, organization, strategy and success of their revolution.

She does not flinch from criticizing the Sandinistas for their initial ill-informed and patronizing attitudes toward the indigineous peoples of their country, nor for their slow acceptance of their female compatriots, nor for their many tactical errors and blunders.

Instead, this telling of the story of Fonseca and the Sanidnistas allows the reader to sense the very human feelings which became the basis of their appeal and allowed their success, even after Fonseca's death.
