A Fine Life, in the Hebrides of Scotland.......2003-10-03
Lillian Beckwith provides a charming and memorable addition to the "writer encounters pleasingly eccentric foreign rural culture" genre; but while Peter Mayle writes about his encounters in Provence, and Frances Mayes writes about Tuscany, Beckwith's encounters are with the people of Bruach, an lonely island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
To my mind, Beckwith is by far the best of the bunch. She writes without the condescension that sometimes mars others in this genre, and her descriptive prose is really outstanding. You really get a sense of the smell, the light, the "feel" of life on a small Scottish croft (farm).
My main caution is that "Loud Halo" is the 3rd of a series of books on the same subject, so I did feel a little as though I had been dropped into the middle of a conversation; characters presumably carefully introduced in the earlier volumes Beckwith assumes you know well at this point, which is sometimes a bit confusing. Thus, you might be better off starting with "The Hills Is Lonely" then carrying on only if Beckwith suits you (I predict she will).
Come in for a wee strupak.......2000-12-08
The Loud Halo picks up from the Ms. Beckwith's earlier books THE HILLS IS LONELY and THE SEA FOR BREAKFAST. This is the third of the series, I read them in order and am glad I did! The kettle is on the fire, a delightful strupak awaits the reader! Come into the charmed croft life of the spinster school teacher, milking the cows, gathering the eggs, beachcombing and gathering hay. The antics of the sheep and cows are much more amusing that than of a miserly English visitor (with a doctor of divinity and not an ounce of human kindness). The gentle nuances of language keep the reader smiling - "just a dress she inhabited from her granny when she died." Or "corp" the singular of "corpse." The book also contains a delightful little list of Gaellic translations and pronounciations. While the story is a delight, significant clouds appear on the horizon - progress looms in the form of electricity and water supply, the 20th century is trying to intrude. Alas, lady in distress, who might be the companion? --Silly Old Cailleach Mamalinda

Book Description
As the Riftwar tears Midkemia apart, enemies trapped in the frozen Northlands must trust each other to stay alive. . . .
In the sprawling, embattled land of Midkemia, fate can form strange alliances. Nine years into the bloody and ongoing Riftwar, Dennis Hartraft's Marauders are cold, hungry, and exhausted. Having only just survived a disastrous encounter with their sworn enemy, the Tsurani, the soldiers are headed for a frontier garrison, where they will be able to rest and recover. But Hartraft's company arrives at the same time as a Tsurani patrol, and both sides discover the stronghold overrun by a migrating horde of dark elves called moredhel, a foe so deadly and vicious the bitter enemies must band together and fight as one.
But can their hatred for their mutual enemy overcome their distrust of each other? As the two groups, bound to each other by their common foe, make their way across the unknown Northlands to freedom, they have to struggle with not only the elements and the enemy, but also their consciences. For, with both sides carrying painful scars from past wars, each man must ask himself what is more important: one's life or one's honor?

Not the Best but Still Fun.......2007-09-09
Unlike many of Feist previous efforts there is nothing creative about this except in the general story line. The characters and intriuge were all a little to formula but still interesting enough to keep me wanting more. If you are a fan of Feist you will enojoy but if this is your first time to read his books, start with another...
Honored Enemy was an Honor To Read!!.......2007-08-15
What happens when you combine two Best-Selling authors into one single fantasy epic?
You end up with classic fantasy that rivals those literary giants of sword & Sorcery and fantasy of the distant past but with more modernistic approach that lends Honored Enemy that fantastical and magical reading experience that will leave you totally satisfied.
So then why didn't we give it a 5 star rating, you ask? Only because the authors failed to give some desciptions to some characters and their type of armor and weapons. Yes, we know from Feist's past best-selling novels of Midkemia involves the invading Asian-like Tsurani, but what types of armor and swords to they wear and carry? We imagined the swords and short swords to be the traditional katana and dai-katana, but it was never told or shown to be that.
Other than that, this was the perfect fantasy novel that was enriched with colorful and believable characters of both Good and Evil, along with top-notch world-building of the frozen world of Midkemia to the rigors of war. Dark and Light elves were truly awe-inspiring to read about, and you will absolutely feel the love and respect the humans have for one Dark Elf who has turned from his brother, the leader of the Dark Elves, and their enemies the Tsurani, who all are forced to join forces in the frozen mountainous terrain to battle a horde of golblins, humans and Dark Elves, all bent on their destruction.
There is major action/adventure here, mixed with a huge bag of writing tricks that will endear you to a host og memorable characters, with even a solid love story that will enthrall and not bore you.
The teaming up here of Raymond E. Feist and co-author William R. Forstchen,(the author of the utterly fantastic Lost Regiment series), together write this new, exciting 1st in a series set in the Riftwar saga that Feist made into a best-selling legendary series. This is truly a magical, exciting read folks!
We are looking forward to purchasing and reading the next book in this series, co-authored by another great fantasy writer, Joel Rosenberg, who wrote another awesome fantasy series - Guardians of the Flame - and should add another new element to Feist's Riftwar saga.
Still good stuff.......2007-08-13
This is a great story, if you can't get enough of the Riftwar Saga. It maybe time for Raymond Feist to move on though. He's a great writer and I'm sure can come up with a new theme at some point. Although he has missed before!
Action and Adventure.......2007-08-04
Honored Enemy is a captivating, action-packed, adventrue story. It's about two sworn enemy forces temporarily setting aside their war in a desperate quest to survive the forces of a third, mutually more dangerous foe. The author develops the key characters while maintaining the active flow of the story. The reader can readily picture and feel the story as it unfolds. It is one of those books you can't put down until it's over and then you wish it wasn't.
Aesome.......2007-06-27
Exciting books. I have not reread this one yet, but I remember it from about 2 years ago. RF is a great writer. If you like a good story that keeps you turning the page, choose him.
Book Description
Do-it-yourself home projects have become a national pastime, and nothing satisfies that urge more then creating built-ins. The fact that they are a permanent part of a house makes it more critical that they be done with as much skill and imagination as possible. That's where the New Built-Ins Idea Book comes in. Written by Sandor Nagyszalanczy, a former senior editor of Fine Woodworking magazine and an acknowledged expert in the field, this illustrated guide shows step-by-step how to create built-ins that are both practical and appealing. Here are hundreds of design ideas for projects for every room of the house, including kitchens, bathrooms, libraries, kids' spaces, dining rooms, bedrooms, and the increasingly popular media spaces. The book shows a wide range of possibilities for incorporating built-ins, from niches to bookcases to spaces that replace those stacks of clothing in the closet. Complete coverage of materials, lighting, color, and hardware, along with careful, comprehensible drawings and photographs, is included.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected ..........2007-01-29
Taunton has a very good reputation for their publications so I thought this would be a great book to help me with several projects I will be undertaking. It was a disappointment. There was nothing innovative or unique about the ideas presented. The cabinet styles were either very basic or so custom they did not provide realistic options. If you are looking for innovative or creative ideas for a realistic cabinet project ... look elsewhere.
Fell short.......2006-10-30
I felt the sample of this book was not a good indication of it's contents. Most of the built-ins shown in the book are from a Room-View with the built in partially obstructed and with little detail shown. I wasn't looking for plans to build, but I would have expected more. If you like the details level shown on the cover of the book, then this will be right up your alley, other wise, the book will probably fall short of your expectations.
Great ideas! .......2006-07-22
To make the most of our new home, I was looking for ideas for custom made cabinetry and other storage options.
Although the style of quite a few examples are not to my taste, I still got enough ideas and inspiration. Also a plus; the book gives you tips for matching built-ins to the rest of the room, to get a coordinated look.
My favourite chapters: Passages (great storage options to be found there!!) Window seats (you will see small window seats as well as really large ones) Workspaces (they show you practical workspaces even in tiny closets) and Utility Areas. In the kitchen chapter I liked the small details, like the pantry and appliance garage.
Petra (from the Netherlands)
Great ideas.......2006-05-18
I want to install severeal built-ins in my older home, as space is limited. This book definitely gave me lots of ideas. The pictures are excellent and really provide inspiration - whether you copy exactly or adapt the ideas to meet your needs. Full of ideas and inspiration - not a how-to.
Talk about IDEAS!.......2006-03-20
This book, by far, exceeded my expectations! It is full of wonderful photos - cover to cover. We are getting ready to build a new home and we will definitely use a few of these creative ideas.
Stephanie from Cincinnati, Ohio

Customer Reviews:
Great source of inspiration!.......2007-08-02
My husband and I are turning our uninspired 1968 tract home into a 2 story Mediterranean. We bought the Kitchen & Bath collection to help us in the design phase. These are not "do it yourself" books. Instead, they help you focus on how to design a kitchen or bath that will work for you. They discuss types of flooring, counters, cabinets, lighting, and how to design a space that "works" for your lifestyle and that "flows" well within your floorplan. We have lots of other books with lots of pretty pictures of designer kitchens & baths but these books were the most useful when we finally sat down with our architect. Without them, we would have never thought to include a lot of the little touches that helped to maximize our kitchen space for the way we cook (canning, cake decorating, candy making, entertaining) or how to make the best use of our bathroom space (extra storage and accessibility) since I have a disability. You might think that your architect would help you with all these things but don't count on it. The clearer your ideas are and the better you are able to articulate those ideas to your architect, the better your design is going to fit your lifestyle and the happier you will be when the project is finished.

The kitchen is the true heart of the home, and homeowners are spending a lot of time and money to make their old kitchens less utilitarian and more creative, a place where people can congregate as well as cook and enjoy good food. This book helps readers figure out what they really want and how to get it, whether its a contemporary, brushed-stainless workroom worthy of an upscale restaurant; a rustic, farmhouse-style great room with wood flooring and a couch; or an elegant, streamlined space for a small city apartment. For every style, for every budget, it's all here: new appliance technology and cabinetry, fixtures and faucets, doors and counter materials, sinks, pulls, built-ins, and bookcases. By using Taunton's New Kitchen Idea Book, homeowners can create the kitchen of their dreams - regardless of style or budget.

A very good resource to show your designer.......2004-06-01
We bought this when we started thinking about a new kitchen and dining addition. It really was a big help to narrow down our choices. THere's nothing worse than feeling as if you know what you want but you can't explain it or you haven't seen a picture of it anywhere. This book has many photos of lots of different types of kitchens, not just one style or size. It isn't arranged kitchen by kitchen, and there aren't any floor plans. PHotos are shown part by part, cabinets, sinks, pantries, etc, so its handy to see all the sinks together. We have not started work on the kitchen yet but I can't wait!!

GREAT BOOK! GOOD TIPS ON RAISING A HAVANESE AND THE HISTORY OF THIS DOG. I BOUGHT THIS BOOK TO BECOME MORE EDUCATED BEFORE I PURCHASE MY HAVANESE! I AM GLAD I DID! THANKS TO DOROTHY, I WILL BE OWNING MY DOG THIS SUMMER!
Falls short..........2007-01-09
The book, besides being out of date, fell way short of expectations in its day. There is a relatively short section specific to the breed followed by the typical, formulaic, generic 'any' dog breed advice found in book series of this ilk. The health information was minimal and glossed over the health issues found in the breed.
Great book on Havanese.......2006-02-23
This was a great book for NEW owners of a Havanese puppy. Full of great material and information on the breed. Written in an easy manner to gain quick knowledge of the history and care of the Havanese. I recommend it highly.

It comes in both color and b&w versions. The color version is a Lulu bestseller!

The book arrived promptly. However, some of the signatures were falling out which I had not expected.
The best non-origami based paper folding book.......2004-02-02
This book is so great I keep hoping they will come out with a sequal. Here's why:
1. The directions are extremely well written which makes even the more difficult projects relatively easy.
2. The projects are innovative and creative -- not your typical origami book.
3. Many of the projects are good for gifts -- especially the light catchers made of translucent vellum paper and the christmas ornaments.
Overall, this book gets two thumbs up.
Delightful!.......2002-09-26

Pop up Greeting Cards.......2000-05-01
This was a rather more difficult book than the others by Chatani and by Chatani and Nakazawa, but the designs are exceptionally lovely even to see. I'd recommend the other volumes to start: Pop-up Cards, Paradise of Origamic Architecture, Paper Magic, and White Christmas.
"One of our favorites" Fred Showker, DT&G Magazine..........1999-09-07
It's a real shame this book is not readily available... it's one of the best books available for the craft of folded paper creations. ***1) will spark your imagination, and reinforce your skills ***2) will give you hours of creative enjoyment. PLUS: the pieces you create from this book will be treasured, and kept by the recipient. ... I cannot recommend it too much to anyone who likes making things with paper!

great book!.......2005-03-14
I've bought many origami books leaving me baffled and ready to give up. This book was very different. The diagrams were much clearer. It has a large variety of models, and a section devoted to creating your own models.
Exellent Book.......2003-05-29
This was one of the first origami books I bought. I started origami about 2 weeks ago and I tried about 10 of the models in this book and I had no problems. My favorie models are the T. Rex and Chimpanzie.
Creative origami.......2001-07-31
I don't own this book but I borowed it from a friend. This book has crystal clear diagrams and instructions. It also has alot of models that are intresting expecialy the masks. If you want a good origami book you should consider buying this one.
Excellent source for creative forms........1999-09-08
I love this book for it's creative ideas. I especially enjoyed folding the eagle, its three dimensional result is a joy to view. There is a bit of cutting on some forms (which I don't like), but the variety of forms and the creative layouts more than make up of this....
Excellent Intermediate Folds........1999-03-12
This lengthy and detailed book is excellent for intermediate folders. However, more experienced folders may not appreciate the fairly frequent cutting and heavy usage of traditional bases.
Still, the book really is CREATIVE and includes an entire chapter on origami creative method.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for elementary age kids.......2005-02-27
This book is 32 pages of very simple paper folding. It should get 5 stars for a child user and 2 stars for adults. It appears to be best suited for use as an arts and crafts book for children with adult supervision. I intend on using in arts and crafts activities with nursing home residents. If you are interested in paper folding for your own pleasure get something more challenging.
Great Book for All Ages.......2003-11-26
I love this book and have used it for years. I've used it with my grandchildren and with my adult students as part of a craft workshop. Everybody loves it. The directions are easy, the projects fun. I'd recommend one for every kid in the family from two to 92. (Hill is author of the mystery novel The Dead Angel.)

Customer Reviews:
Pure Inspiration for the home gardener........1998-10-19
I read the book cover to cover twice in the first week and am now reading it again. Herbs in the Garden is pure inspiration. The title may be misinterpreted by those who have not seen the book. The focus is not on herbs, but rather on how herbs, vegetables, flowers and shrubs may be used together in garden design, or as the subtitle says, "The Art of Intermingling". The book is a breezy walk through the authors' garden, starting with a discussion of foliage as the framework, then working onward through their use of cottage and border gardens, their shade and dryland design (totally avoiding the use of the trendy term "xeriscaping") and concluding with containerized planting ideas.
Written in a casual, conversational style with humorous anecdotes and comments, the strength of the book lies in its geographic versatility. The authors describe their garden but don't dwell on the horticultural requirements of the plants. This allows them to focus on design - how the hardscape and plantings interact - and on the practical knowledge they have gained in years of digging and growing. Gardeners anywhere can adapt the suggestions to fit their own locales.
The book's strength, the lack of horticultural specifics, may also be a source of frustration for some. I kept a reference book handy to look up plants that I was unfamiliar with. This allowed me to quickly determine if an intriguing plant was appropriate for my climate. A beginning gardener, familiar with only a limited number of plants, might find this annoying. A reference chart at the back of the book that does give some information.
Overall, Proctor and Macke have written a delightful book. It reads like a novel, has lovely photographs and will plant dreams of backyard paradises in the minds of garden fanatics. It gave me a bad case of "gardener vision".

Good value and nicely printed.......2003-11-04
This is a short book (96 pages) on August Macke, the German painter who was a member of the "Blaue Reiter" group. Sadly, he was killed in the initial months of World War I at a tragically early age. Who knows what he would have accomplished? His sense of color and reduction of form and shape to flat, almost abstract design is revolutionary and paved the way for Cubism. He did watercolors, often as studies for his oils, and his paintings from Tunisia are especially beautiful. He portrayed the everyday (women shopping for hats, people sitting in cafes) in beautifully colored and composed paintings of light. If you don't know Macke's work, this is a fine introduction.
Product Description
Just before the outbreak of World War I, Macke, Paul Klee and another Swiss painter, Louis René Moilliet, set out on a trip to North Africa in order to "capture the Mediterranean light." This is an engaging artbook, devoted to a painter whose talent ranks high in the history of contemporary art. 35 Illustrations, incl. 16 in full color.
Book Description

Sweet little book..........2001-02-01
HERBS IN POTS by Rob Proctor and David Macke is a sweet little book filled with all sorts of "neat" ideas. If you don't have much experience growing plants in containers or otherwise, pots of herbs are a good place to begin. Even if you have limited space, as long as you have plenty of sunlight (a balcony in the blazing sun?) you can grow herbs in pots. If you end up buying your herbs at Whole Foods, you can use the recipes the authors share and put your herbs in the cooking pot.
This is a beautiful glossy book with lots of color photos. The authors are folksy and fun to read and they provide text and pictures that explain how you too can grow beautiful pots of herbs and use them in tasty dishes.
Chapter one discusses 'Herbal Care' where practical hints are provided for the new herb grower. Take watering for example. Even drought tolerent herbs require watering. On the other hand, depending on the pot of choice, overwatering can cause problems. The authors note the most likely cause of death is not Mother Nature, but Mother Hen overwatering her pots.
The second chapter is entitled 'The Cook's Patio' and contains photos of handome lettuces, lacy kale, and Italian parsley, as well as many interesting recipes. One can grow herbs singly or in groups in a single pot. Herbs provide accents for the cooking pot as well as the patio. Gazpacho or Pesto anyone?
The later half of the book provides the reader with examples of pot containers, planting designs, and eclectic notions. For example, one might plant herbs in used Twining tea tins or enhance plant containers with odd paraphanalia such as shells and small rocks. The book is visually appealing, and contains some of the most original ideas I've come across in a while. This is a nice gift item for a new homemaker.

Introduction to one of the 20th c.'s great colourists.......2001-10-24
Auguste Macke was only 27 when he died in action in the first month of World War One, and is usually classed as an Expressionist because these are the type of paintings he was producing in the last months of his life. But as Anna Meseure's study demonstrates, Macke went through more and quicker changes of style than Picasso, moving every few months from Symbolism to Impressionism to Post-Impressionism to Fauvism to Cubism to the Blaue Reiter Group to Futurism to Orphism to Expressionism. In this intense metamorphosing over about six years, Macke is an index to the extraordinary modernist activity that exploded in the decade prior to World War 1. but whereas Picasso's need for change was driven by intense personal need, it is difficult to overcome the suspicion of dilettantism in Macke's work, this amiable son of the bourgeoisie; a painter who never faced the economic anguish of many artists, thanks to the generosity of his industrialist uncle-in-law; a man happiest in family life and provincial towns: a kind of gentleman amateur, someone blissfully unaware of a world hurtling towards an apocalyptic war. Even an epochal trip to Tunisia with Paul Klee, which resulted in his most celebrated work, only lasted a fortnight. Meseure encourages this conception by emphasising how Macke's encounters with radical cultural currents were always transformed by him in a reactionary way - so his urban scenes inspired by the visual fractures of Futurism become passive and contemplative, leaked of tension. although he contibuted to the first Blaue Reiter exhibition and its 'Almanac', he fundamentally disagreed with its figurehead Kandinsky.
There is some continuity in all this stylistic leap-frogging - the subject matter of the Impressionists (streets, cafes, parks etc.), the geometrical compositions of Cezanne, and, above all, the blazing colours of the Fauves. Because it is as a colourist that Macke is treasured today - even his most derivative paintings are lit with a luminous, Degas-like glow. Meseure defines Macke's life-work as an attempt to reconcile 'abstraction' with 'empathy', to paint the found world with severe formalism, pushing the representation towards abstraction without ever abandoning the former. Inevitably, dead at the age of 27, Macke cannot but seem (Meseure concludes) an artist of unfulfilled promise.
Macke's text is serviceable as a biographical introduction to the artist, and as a guide to the formal properties of his work, his use of colour and his compositional method. In overempahsising his interest in form over content, however, she tends to under-estimate the latter, which leads to some dubious interpretation of the paintings. For instance, the major 'Girls Under Trees' of 1914 is considered a 'utopian vision', despite the fact that one girl is isolated from two groups, separated from the one nearest by a phallic tree which might explain why. Meseure quotes Macke - 'Even in the games of children, even in the hat of a cocotte, in our joy at a sunny day, invisible ideas gently assume material form' - but doesn't seem to grasp the darker implications of this credo. the solitude, the inertia and the facelessness of his figures certainly allow for a more negative, perhaps deeper appreciation.
In any case, the magnificent, generous, full-colour reproductions allow us to make up our own minds. which begs one question - how can Taschen produce such high-quality reproductions in such cheaply priced books, when many of its competitors offer dull photocopies?

The first complete and balanced history of the Black Panther Party
Customer Reviews:
SHADOWS AND FIBS...........2007-08-04
After reading The Shadow of the Panther I realized that it was simplifying and demonizing Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party. The information gathered is conflicting and at best contradicting. This may be due to Hugh Pearson's questionable "inside" sources. More critically reliable reading on the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton can be found in Panther on the Prowl by Elbert "Bigman" Howard and We Want Freedom: a Life in the Black Panther Party by Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Both these titles are thoroughly concise and supported by personal experience and all former Party members.
don't look for objectivity here.......2007-07-20
This "expose" of the Black Panther Party and Huey Newton attempts to pass itself off as a sobering, objective view of the Party that counterbalances overly positive accounts. It is far from objective. Hugh Pearson seems determined to gloss over the positive aspects of the Party programs and fairly relishes detailing the negative, destructive aspects of the Party and Newton's behavior. It is a scholarly piece; well referenced and well written. But the author's thesis comes through loud and clear: the BPP and Huey Newton were more responsible for their downfall than any government conspiracy, and that Blacks who admired them were duped. He ends his book concluding that the Party was a temporary "media phenomenon". Oh really? Most inner city school breakfast programs, health fairs in the Black community with blood pressure, sickle cell, and cholesterol screening programs, and Black run charter schools can be said to have been influenced by the BPP. Hugh Pearson seems to be the kind of Black man that would view the videotaped beating of Rodney King and write an essay about King's criminal past, implying that he somehow deserved it. Although this book is valuable reading for those interested in the BPP and Newton, please read it only after you have read at least 3 or 4 other books about the party, for balance. You will need it.
Decent book, although it is missed the mark sometimes........2006-10-24
First off let me state that I am not implying that Pearson's research or what he stated in the book is untrue. I must say that of all the books I read on the BPP this book is very meticulous in citing sources. I also realize that some people Pearson sought to interview for the book who could have provided some insight into the different areas Huey Newton's life refused to be interviewed which is why the book is the way that it is.
I think Pearson's claim that Newton couldn't change his life toward the positive is based one the fact that he didn't want to change is flawed because we have to take into account that Newton was a full blown drug addict. Unless you understand the complex nature of addiction you won't understand why some people (like David Hillard) can get clean or turn their life around and why others have a hard time doing so, or just flat out fail. I should also add that no mention was made of Newton's attempts to get clean either-Richard Pryor actually paid for Newton's stint in rehab. Maybe this was not known information when the book was published but either way the author never mentions it. It appears that he is implying that Newton enjoyed being a criminal and an addict. Even the chapter detailing Newton getting his PhD, is plagued by the negative. I don't believe that people who enjoy the criminal/drug lifestyle would go to back to school for a PhD unless they were trying to fight their personal demons.
Also if one could figure out when Newton started heavily abusing drugs one can see the turns for the worse that the party kept taking. Although I do not excuse Newton's or anyone elses negative behavior in the party, we do have to take into account that heavy drug use does impare common sense and makes people fearless. I just get the impression that the author did not really understand the influence drugs had on Newton's situation and insane choices.
Pearson also mentions SNCC and the Black Power movement a lot stating how they were flawed theology but it would have been nice to get a final anaylsis from people like Kwame Toure, who was apart of the movement, or other historian's take on the movement. Pearson just seems to assert that the movement was flawed and nothing else. I didn't see any positive writings that the movement could have had. He did spend a lot of time showing how the terminology was confusing and the people who were using it seemed to be confused as to what "Black Power" was all about, which is good but I was looking for more of a follow-up to the problems that the terminology presented. Perhaps a historian would have been better equipped to make a final anaylsis?
The book spends a lot of time detailing the BPP underworld activities and the illegal things the party did but not enough was spent on other areas of the party and when they are mentioned we always see the corrupt part of the action. I am not saying that they did not happen, but I was hoping to see a little more balance. Some social programs instituted by the party did have positive effects in the community to some extend but the author does not really present that.
Pearson also asserts that the party was nothing more of a "media phenomena" at the end of his book, which is a disappointing assessment and far to0 simple for such a complex cast of characters.
Lastly Pearson stated that he was looking for more men to interview at first because he wanted positive info from men, when doing his research. He stated that when finding men willing to come forward was hard to find he finally added the women. I understand his reasoning behind this but I think (if he didn't try, which I don't know since he never mentioned it) he should have sought out women such as Newton's ex wives and other well known women in the party for additional commentary. I just thing the women may have some of the missing keys to understanding the party and Huey Newton. (Actually this assuption of mine has been proven already-Fredricka Newton has a chapter she wrote in David Hillard's book "In the Spirit of the Panther" about Huey's final years that was never publicized before)
All in all this is a great book, especially if you want to see why the party disintegrated. I recommend it, but I don't think a person unfamiliar with the party's history should read it before familiarizing themselves with the party's history and main characters. The history is so complex that other material is needed so that one can get a balanced feel of the history. This book only shows one side of Newton and the party when it seems clear that there was a whole host of issues going on.
Wonderful Book!.......2005-09-07
A great in-dept analysis on the rise and fall of the Panther Party and how Heuy Newton was responsible for both. I would recommend this book to any history buff.
Great book about the Black Panthers!.......2004-04-23
I have read a few books on the Panthers, and have always been drowned in my own romantacism that I never questioned anything that came from the movement. This book sheds light on so many things; which may at times make readers uncomfortable. At one point you feel greatful for such an organization, while at others your disapointment may sadden you.
That is what makes this a good book; objectivity. He lays the positives out, but does not ignore the negatives; in fact, a good percentage of this book is explaining so many of the negatives within the party. Still, at the same time, you get a feeling that the author truly appreciates the positive aspects of the BPP, but appreciates it without ignoring the blemishes within the party's past.
Anyway, it's a good book. I have known a few Panthers, and one in particular I made a coment about how I looked up to Huey Newton. He started making some statments and I asked him to stop because I didn't want to have a tarnished image of the man. Now, after reading this book, I see both sides of the issue; which makes things all the more clearer. This book has left me both disapointed and greatful. Disapointed because some things in Panther past were not as I expected; and greatful that I got to see another side of the BPP.
