Book Description
Combining classic stories with never-before-published work, The Mammoth Book of Tales from the Road travels along exotic as well as familiar pathways, covering territory from the erotic and romantic, to the chilling, adventurous, and humorous. From trails carved through dense jungle to six-lane superhighways, these travelers’ tales comprise cops and robbers barrelling down mean streets, summer roadtrip vacations gone wildly wrong, sentimental journeys made in hope and despair, wandering wise men, and post-apocalyptic road warriors. Created by master anthologist Maxim Jakubowski, this Mammoth collection features a mixture of legendary road stories plus a selection of brand-new, especially commissioned pieces. Includes excerpts from classics such as Kerouac’s On the Road, Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, and James Ellroy’s Killer on the Road. There are also complete reprints of favorite stories such as John Hughes’s “Vacation ‘58” and hidden gems by the likes of Ed McBain, Hunter S. Thompson, William S. Burroughs, Brian W. Aldiss, J. G. Ballard, Lee Child, and Michael Dibden. The Mammoth Book of Tales from the Road also picks up new works from contemporary authors such as Alex Garland, Thomas S. Roche, Matt Thorne, Stella Duffy, and many others.

Eat This Book.......2004-05-03
What a great read! The stories vary from the classic (Steinbeck's Migrant People brought tears to my eyes) to edgy noir to humor to speculative fiction, encompassing film parody, inspiration from 9/11, and more. I found it to be a very diverse read, with more flavors than Baskin-Robbins. Dig in as your cold scoop melts on steaming asphalt.
Surprisingly good!.......2003-01-25
I'm not much of a road book fan but while staying with a friend who *is*, I picked up this book from his coffee table and started reading. The writing was good and after a couple of stories, I really began to appreciate the theme of the book and the way the editors combined old, classic road stories (Kerouac, etc.) with new tales that speak of the same movement, wanderlust and basic curiosity. I couldn't help but notice an earlier reviewer who referred to this book as "travel writing," which it clearly is not. It's pure fiction but with all the elements of realism that travel entails. I'm still making my way through it but so far, I think it's quite entertaining.
Ride Hard, Read Free.......2003-01-14
Lots of edgy writing focusing on the journey, not the destination. Not meant to be a travel writing collection at all, but rather a collection of new and classic road tales from well-known writers and newcomers.
I found it interesting to see the theme of road tales interpreted by so many different kinds of writers. If you love the road and have a sense of awe, admiration, and fear for the darkened highways, check it out. If you want travel writing like Retread, yeah, you'll do better with Sunset Magazine.
a retread.......2003-01-05
A retread title to go with a lot of retread writing. Nothing new or exciting here, move on down the road - there's a lot of great travel writing to be found out there.

I invoke the Commonwealth!, .......2005-12-10
_This is truly a book for book lovers. It starts with a middle-aged Chicagoan with a degree in Business Administration and a life that that has ceased to hold any meaning or charm for him. He boards a freighter as a passenger in order to try to put a little interest and excitement in his life. Well, he finds it. The freighter is shipwrecked after several days of running before a storm and the main character, Silverlock, finds himself cast adrift without a life boat. As he says- if he had cared to live, he would have died. As it is however, he doesn't struggle and exhaust himself- he merely surrenders himself to his fate and the currents. Fate soon finds him....
_What Silverlock finds is the Commonwealth. This is a place where all the great stories from myth, legend, and literature actually exist, somehow, side by side. This requires a suspension of belief, but given the excellent story telling that isn't too difficult. That seems to be what the Commonwealth is all about- it is the Commonwealth of story telling, or imagination.
_It is more than just a survey of great characters and stories, however. Silverlock comes across as pretty unsympathetic at the beginning, but through experience and suffering in his travels from east to west he grows immeasurably in character. Perhaps the Commonwealth is a mask for purgatory, where lost souls are given a second chance at growth and redemption. In any case it is more heaven than purgatory for the reader.
Personally, I have mixed feelings about the "companion" aspect of this book. I remember when I first read it, a big part of the charm was recognising the characters and situations from my own reading (if you recognise a majority of them, then you are "well-read") Then when I reread it, time and again, I would recognise a reference or two that I had not gotten previously. Having it right there in the book where you can simply look it up seems rather common- almost like cheating.
_Save this book for special quiet times when your spirit needs a recharge. I know that I do.
The definitive version of Silverlock.......2004-05-04
Having first been recommended this book by a close friend in the early '80s, and after borrowing her copy and finding a copy for myself, I have since run through 3 entire copies of this book in paperback. In addition, I have loaned out two other copies to friends over the years, and never had those returned. However, like Ben Franklin, I never begrudge the loaning of a book to a friend and never getting it back.
Now, I have it in hardback, and hope that this one will last much longer. The addition of the Silverlock Companion just makes the overall intristic value of the novel go up by several notches. Now, after running across a litterary reference that I like, I can actually track it to the source to find yet another diamond in the rough.
Good for all ages from high school on up, I recommend this to anybody interested in literature and/or a ronp of an adventure story. Whether you recognize all, some or none of the persons, places and things in the Commonwealth, it's one of the best reads in the last century. Enjoy.
A unique, amazing, and little known masterpiece.......2004-05-02
Upon first discovering Silverlock 22 years ago, I was struck with a sense of amazing wonderment which must have filled the discovers of the New World when they first saw a new land totally unlike any they had seen before. A masterwork of fantasy on par with Tolkien in quality, yet truly unique, being derivative of nothing else, Silverlock is a classic that works on several levels. First, it is a bang-up good adventure yarn, following the misadventures of the title character from his ship wreck in unknown waters through many close scrapes, battles, drinking bouts, and wenchings in the enchanted realm of the Commonwealth of Letters. Secondly, it is an allegory, following the development of Silverlock from a cold cynic with no respect for or knowledge of the world of literature, to an enthusiastic aspirant maker of tales. And finally, it is an incredible literary game of 'identify that reference', as every person, place, and thing in Silverlock, outside of the protagonist is lifted from the vast range of literature and myth, from Gilgamesh to Mark Twain.
These literary references and the way Silverlock interacts with them create the unique magic of this book. Typical of the scenes that you will find here is Silverlock emerging from the forest where the night before he has been the guest of Robin Hood and his merry band, stopping at a tavern and lunching with the Mad Hatter and his party, and pushing on for an evening feast at Heorot Hall, where the revelers are celebrating the death of Grendel by recounting the tale of the Alamo in Norse verse. All this and more in but one chapter.
Nesfa Press' new edition of Silverlock has the added advantage of including The Silverlock Companion, which among other things includes an alphabetical listing of all the literary allusions, and a bibliography of books containing the poems, stories, and legends to which allusion is made in Silverlock.
Silverlock is a book you will come back to many times. I just finished my third reading of it, which certainly will not be my last. This is a book to keep, treasure, and share. Buy two copies, one for you, and one to lend and share the magic

A wonderful, mindbending romp.......2004-03-26
A family member introduced to me to this book several years back, and I've since snatched up every copy I've been able to get my hands on! This is a marvelous lagniappe of allusions and illusions, with nods to everyone from Homer and Beowulf to Robin Hood and Tom Jones. How many characters and places can you recognize? I stopped after thirty-five. . . perfect for the literature buff, the trivia maven, the avid reader, or anyone looking for a fun read.

Man, a plan and a grill.......2007-10-08
I bought this book because I hoped it would give me some ideas on quick, simple meals involving a grill. I am a male hobby cook and found plenty of new very simple ideas. I especially enjoy some of the cooking instructions like use so much beer and so much ginger ale and then drink the beer and give the ginger ale to your girl friend.
The book is written on a very easy beginning level. This is for someone who is just beginning to learn the fun of cooking.
If it gets your husband to cook..........2006-07-16
My husband has wanted the cook book for a while. I don't know why it took me so long to get it...if it gets your husband excited to be cooking, it is so worth it!:)
Guy meals on the grill.......2004-05-16
This sturdy paperboard cookbook, presented by Men's Health magazine, is geared for guys who are novices at cooking and looking for easy meals to prepare on the grill. These 50 recipes, each of which is enhanced with ingredients out of cans, include beef, chicken, fish, pizza, pork, Spam, turkey, and veggies. Among the recipes are beer-can chicken, red-hot ribs, Dr Pepper-glazed ham, teriyaki turkey, and spuds on a stick.
The main ingredients and the finished product are illustrated with photographs. The book includes nutritional information, tips on the art of grilling, and a generous dollop of humor. Some of these recipes might be a little tricky for the novice cook to prepare, considering the unpredictability of a grill's flames and heat level, but there are still plenty of foolproof meals here beyond basic burgers and chicken that are great for feeding (and impressing) guests.

The secret is the can!.......2004-02-11
Let's face it, we all love being a little creative in the kitchen or around the grill every now and then. Who would have thought ordinary canned cola or beer would add great taste to the best meats on the grill? Mix a budweiser with worcestershire sauce, grilling mix, and a small jar of chopped jalapenos and you have a wild barbecue mix making you believe you may be out in the Caribbeans. Or a can of sloppy joe barbecue sauce mixed with jalapenos. There are recipes a plenty guaranteed to fire up your taste buds.
Author David Joachim, who also penned A MAN, A CAN, A PLAN gives many great tips for perfecting your roastings for the grill. This book is a real must for anybody inviting guests over for a summer barbecue. Whether it's steak fajitas doused in beer, a rotisserie chicken grilled with a can of budweiser up the (orifice), or ordinary St. Louis Style Ribs - there are no limits as to what an ordinary can will do to add flavor to your favorite dishes. Highly recommended for any barbecue chef wannabes out there!

Customer Reviews:
Good starter info.......2006-06-06
A simple book, easy to follow.
Its a little heavy on the treats system for me to say I Love it. It does however, tell you to eventually wean out the treats and replace with praise.
It certainly helped my daughter get a start on working with our puppy, and it does have plenty of other good tips on restraint, and control.
I really want to give it 4 stars... but the treat thing... just keeps it at 3.5
Pictures Without Substance.......2006-03-15
This is a nice coffee table picture book. However, when a specific behavior issue comes up about my dog's behavior the text is lacking. Wish the author would give more specifics on the select topics covered in this book. Not an on the spot survival kit!
Too Basic.......2006-02-14
I recently acquired an Alaskan Klee Kai (mini husky) & he thinks he's the leader of my pack - I bought this book hoping that as a new puppy owner it would help me better understand how to train him, but it was so basic that everything it explained I knew already.
Ok but VERY Basic........2005-12-02
This book has some good ideas and good techniques but it is VERY basic and short. Seems more like a picture oriented training manual for kids. Not really what I was looking for but ok if you just want some good advice and pictures.
New Complete Dog Training Manual .......2005-10-21
Well written book that was fun to read and to review over and over. The book has many pictures that demonstrated the different training activities. The book read by the whole family, including my kids (ages 7 - 18). It is a great reference book for training a dog.

From plastic use by early astronauts to its broad application by today's art curators and experts in museums and galleries for everything from storage to high-tech crating, this authoritative publication serves the needs for the professional and layperson alike as a reference.
Customer Reviews:
Clear and consise.......2001-05-03
This book is ideal for anyone interested in the conservation of plastics, and you don't need a scientific background to understand it. It begins with simple and easy to follow information on the basics of plastics (putting science into a accessable format brilliantly). It then covers the types of degradation that can occur with pictures, and the conservation steps that can be taken both in a private collection and on the larger museum scale. The book is in the format of several individual papers for each topic, thus utilising the experience of a range of experts and giving the reader a well rounded view of the topic. For example, the chapter on caring for plastics takes you through caring for plastics in the home, caring for plastics in museums, galleries and archives, plastics for storage and display, and conservation research in the 1990's. Like the other chapters it caters for the range of interest levels, from the home collector to those considering further study. The last chapter of the book is devoted to references and a well-appointed glossary. It provides website addresses as well as the usual journal and book refernces. It's definately the most wothwhile book I've read on the subject.
Book Description
The bark canoes of the North American Indians, particularly those of birchbark, were among the most highly developed manually propelled primitive watercraft. Built with Stone Age tools from available materials, their design, size, and appearance were varied to suit the many requirements of their users. Even today, canoes are based on these ancient designs, and this fascinating guide combines historical background with instructions for constructing one. Author Edwin Tappan Adney, born in 1868, devoted his life to studying canoes and was practically the sole scholar in his field. His papers and research have been assembled by a curator at the Smithsonian Institution, and illustrated with black-and-white line drawings, diagrams, and photos.

The Classic Work on Bark and Skin Craft.......2000-12-21
All modern students of bark and skin boats begin with this book. The intial work on the native watercraft of North America.
While the book does not cover the watercraft of all North American First Nations, it does provide a broad range of information on craft from many Nations across the continent.
This book is highy recommended to anyone interested in the history of canoes or kayaks as developed on the North American continent.

Book Description
The circus is a dazzling world filled with acrobats and harlequins, tumblers and riders, monsters and celestial creatures. Now this engaging book sets that world in a new light, examining how painters, sculptors, and photographers from the eighteenth century to the present have used the circus as a springboard for their imaginative expression and have envisioned the clown as a metaphor for the modern artist.
The book presents more than 175 works by such artists as Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rouault, Picasso, Chagall, and Léger. Some of these are masterful works shown for the first time; these range from the 18-meter stage curtain Picasso designed in 1917 for Erik Satie’s ballet Parade to more intimate works such as Nadar and Tournachon’s photographs of Pierrot as played by celebrated mime Charles Debureau.

In 1996, when Adam Schefter was asked to cowrite Terrell Davis's book, Shefter thought it was a bit premature. After all, Davis had just finished his first year in the NFL. But after Terrell rushed for three touchdowns and 157 yards in the Denver Broncos' Super Bowl XXXII upset victory over the Green Bay Packers, Shefter and Terrell started their work. After spending hundreds of hours with Terrell in an effort to better understand him as a person rather than a player, Shefter wonders why the book wasn't written sooner.
Dreams in Motion certainly captures Davis's gridiron heroics, but more importantly, it focuses on the incredible amount of off-field challenges he's overcome to reach this high level of success. Thanks to his mother's lessons of love, hard work, and high standards, he survives a tough San Diego upbringing, a hard-nosed father, and a football path that derails at almost every level. And despite seemingly less-than-adequate football skills, Davis rises up through the NFL ranks with unwavering resolve, proving the importance of a mother's work. --Ben Tiffany
Book Description
On a sun-filled January day, running back Terrell Davis stood atop a fire truck that slowly wound through downtown Denver during the Broncos' Super Bowl victory parade while 650,000 raucous fans were chanting "TD! TD! TD!"
It was a moment of exhilaration and accomplishment for Terrell, whose record-setting, three-touchdown performance against the Green Bay Packers earned him the Super Bowl XXXII MVP. As he waved and gave the Mile High Salute, Terrell couldn't help but think of how unbelievable it all was, how it had taken so much to get to this shining moment.
"If I were to jump outside my body and get a chance to read my life story, I would say, `Man, that's amazing.' I've never heard, seen, or read a story like this--never."
Terrell had faced hurdles that make carrying a football seem easy in comparison. There were blinding migraine headaches that had haunted him from the age of seven and almost removed him from the Super Bowl; a capricious father, who toughened Terrell in unorthodox ways, yet helped mold him into the person and player he is today; an arrest in college that could have cost him everything he ever wanted; a contentious relationship with his head coach at the University of Georgia that made him more determined than ever.
At Lincoln High School, before being switched to fullback during his senior year, Terrell was a nose guard, attracting scant attention from colleges. At Long Beach State, his college of choice, the football program folded two seasons after Terrell arrived. At Georgia, Terrell saw his stock and reputation almost irreparably damaged, all leading to him becoming the 196th player and 21st running back selected in the 1995 NFL draft. Finally, in his rookie year with the Broncos, he battled from being a sixth-string running back to starter in the span of only one summer. Not since his Pop Warner days, when he was known as "Boss Hogg," was he thought of as a go-to guy, and now, here he was, one of the NFL's top players.
TD: Dreams in Motion is a candid and surprising autobiography, unlike any sports book. It takes you on a journey through Terrell's life and into his mind and heart. It explains how Terrell has been able to maintain the edge that others have lost. It spells out the origins of the Mile High Salute that became a nationally recognized sports symbol and celebration. It discusses the unique relationship he shares with his mother, a remarkable and compassionate woman.
Perhaps most important, TD: Dreams in Motion is inspirational. It helps you understand why Terrell has been able to persevere while others he has known have veered off the road.
Terrell will overwhelm you not with his moves on the football field, but with his words on the page. Searing and gut-wrenching, lighthearted and funny, honest and real, this is Terrell Davis's own story, the memoirs of a champion.
Customer Reviews:
Review of TD: Dreams in Motion.......2001-11-15
After reading this book I felt like I wanted to become a professional football player. Just reading about Terrell Davis's life, I didn't want to stop; it was so interesting. It seemed like this book just couldn't be long enough.
This is an autobiography that Terrell Davis, a superstar running back, told in the first person. This book starts out by Terrell explaining how he was feeling during the Super Bowl XXXII. During this game he got a migraine that took him out of the game for the second half. This is a game he would never forget.
Terrell Davis is the youngest of six; all children are boys, Terry, Terrell, Bobby, James, Reggie, and Joe. Terrell was born in San Diego in 1972. His father, Joe Earl Davis, was a very violent man, one night he came home drunk about 2 A.M., and he pulled each of his brothers out of bed, lined them up against the wall, pulled out his .38 Special with black electric tape around the grip, and just started shooting right above their heads. On April 17, 1987, his father died of Lupus, an immune-deficiency disease in which the body doesn't recognize itself and starts to attack itself.
Terrell played baseball but wasn't much good at it. But football was different for him. He started out playing Pop Warner as the Velencia Park Saints, in Velencia, he played high school ball at Lincoln High School, and went to the University of Georgia and played College ball their. He wasn't the best football player in college, but his senior year he stepped it up to get into the NFL, especially his last two games in college. He was chosen along with fifteen other running backs to go to an annual NFL's scouting combine, it's another chance to make an impression on a team. For the physical he was stripped down naked, walked out on a stage, while the Teams' trainers took a closer look.
Terrell Davis was drafted to the Denver Broncos, a team he thought would never take him, during the sixth round of the draft. While on the Broncos he was a sixth-string running back and only went in a little bit during the pre-season his rookie year, but when he was in he did good enough to start at running back during the regular season. After his rookie year was over, he rushed for 1,117 yards, caught passes for 367 yard, for a total of 1,484 yards. During his next two seasons, the Broncos won the Super Bowl, for two years straight.
Terrell Davis still plays for the Broncos, and still continues to break records. He is one of my favorite players and I had the opportunity to meet him in 1999. I really admire his determination to the sport.
If you have ever read one of those books where they stay on the same subject forever, then don't read this book; he talks about the same thing forever. But this book is great for football fans, and even better for Broncos fans. I really liked this book since I could relate to Denver, since I used to live there, and it was really fun to understand where and what he was talking about.
Dreams In Slow Motion.......2001-10-15
In today's football world, Terrell Davis is known as a superstar, but not in the literature world. He was trying to accomplish this literature superstar role when he co-wrote his own memoir with Adam Schefter. An all pro athlete and a sports writer, a very thoughtless combination in the literature circuit. Throughout this novel, we hear some about the struggle of growing up in a bad neighborhood for Terrell Davis, but not nearly enough. This is mostly a story about football and migraines.
Terrell Davis had a troubled past and had to overcome it all to be a Super Bowl M.V.P. He wrote this book to let people all over the country know that they can overcome their troubled lives and turn a negative view of life into a positive one.
This book had its ups and downs, but for the most part it was down. It seemed, for the first half of the book, that every chapter went back to migraines and the repetition was incredibly boring. In the second half it was football and also came across as mostly uninteresting. I don't think that Terrell Davis was ready to write a book. He does not have the concept of grabbing the readers attention. Also, only having played two years in
the NFL, he wrote this book way to early in his career and could have made it much more interesting if he had let more of his career in it.
One thing that was good about this memoir was hearing his passion for football. If there was any sort of true writing in this book, it was when he was going deep into how he feels for the game. This is probably the one thing that keeps this book from being bought and then placed in the garbage.
So as a memoir, I believe this would be a poor choice for a well written piece of literature. Overall, this book ultimately shouldn't have been published for anything other than having Terrell Davis' signature put on it. But for sports fans, a Terrell Davis memoir with his signature on it would be a definite must have.

Td scorces a touchdown it is a great book.......2000-01-22
TD Dreams IN Motion is a great book. It is TD's memories in his pop wanner day's, College and NFL days. The book starts off when he plays for a pop wanner football. TD had a hard Knock life growing up. His dad was always in trouble with the law and his mom had other thing that she had to do. When his parrents split apart from each oher he was seperated from his mom except for on week ends. His dad tought his brothers and TD to be tough.Evently he played college ball but when his first collage cut the football progarm he went to gergia and played O.K. After his senior year he was drafted to the Denver Broncos and the 196 pick. He worked hard and went from 6th string to 1st string. John Elway and TD took their team to the supperbowl twice and won both of them.
Everyone should buy this book and make their kids read it!.......1999-09-12
Buy this book, read it, make your children read it and their children read it. At last a top flight sporting superstar who can truly be called a role model. Terrell's life story makes a great read and shows how hard work, determination and humility can lead a person to accompalish their goals.
The football stuff makes interesting reading, covering Terrell's first season, the loss to Jacksonville and ultimately SuperBowl glory.
It is the 'off-field' stories which really reveal Terrell in his true light- A Man, A hero and a Role model.
