Book Description
In his acceptance speech for the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature, J. M. Coetzee delivered an intriguing and enigmatic short story, He and His Man. The story features Robinson Crusoe, long after his return from the island, reflecting on death and spectacle, writing and allegory, solitude and sociability, as he searches his mind for some true understanding of the man who writes of and for him. In the spare and powerful prose for which Coetzee is renowned, The Nobel Lecture in Literature, 2003 is a provocative testament to the uncompromising vision of one of the world's most profound writers.
Customer Reviews:
A speech in the form of an allegorical story .......2006-11-22
Coetze does not make the usual direct statement on the role of the writer and the situation of mankind. Instead he tells a story of Robinson Crusoe returned to England after the long years of exile, observing and reflecting upon the worlds around him. He sees the cruelty of life in a story of ducks entrapping fellows of their own species. He tells stories of the great plague, one moving one of a father who bring provisions for his wife and family but cannot come to be with them because they are already infected by the plague. Robinson tells of his writing and his slow coming to the task and continuing even in his old age. The solitary Cruesoe is perhaps the figure for Cooetze himself, the writer , seeking to connect with and yet deeply isolated from all of mankind.

A Sensual Thrill Ride.......2006-06-24
I took a chance and read a genre I have never read before. After the first chapter I connected. I couldn't put it down. I was on vacation and my husband kept asking me if I really wanted to read that book. Well I finished it after two days by the pool. What a ride! I normally read non-fiction or a good mystery but this book had it all. Sophia Miller goes to an old castle per her grandfathers Will with her cousin Karl. Once they arrive, her cousin Karl turns malicious and she meets a man she is so drawn to; you feel yourself pulling toward the intriguing Peter Kreig. There are werewolves, a shadowy forest and chalk cliffs that draw you in repeatedly. Tracy Jones makes you feel as though you are right there in the cold damp castle in 1804 on the Island of Rügen. It's chilling and sensual. My husband read the book as soon as I finished it. He loved it too!
A chillingly, fascinating gothic romance tale.......2005-08-30
Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques
When Sophia Miller is summoned to Europe for the reading of her grandfather's will, she never expects her life to change as it does. She begins to have strange dreams that haunt her nights, and experiences sexual longings never before experienced, every time she is in the presence of mysterious stranger, Peter Krieg. All she wants is to gain her inheritance so she can return home and care for her ailing mother.
Peter Krieg is a stranger, and oddly enough, one of a family that was long thought dead. So when he appears at the castle, everyone is shocked that he even exists. He had been kept hidden his entire life, tasked with a duty to destroy an evil power lurking at the Mueller castle. No one knows his true purpose at the reading of the will, or why it was required that he even be there. When he meets the beautiful Sophia, he begins to realize his duty may be a little more difficult than expected. Love was never a part of the bargain.
Strange happenings occur at the Mueller home and new people arrive who seem to know more then they are telling. When Sophia's cousin, Karl, disappears, it is feared he has succumbed to the evil. Is there any truth to the rumors of an ancient family curse that they will become werewolves? And how can Sophia and Peter defeat the terror that permeates the entire island?
Sophia has some strong powers she's only begun to experience, and when they begin to awaken, her life changes permanently. These powers however, that should be her undoing, may actually be the key to conquering the evil forever. Peter Krieg is a dark, mysterious man who knows more than he is telling. The love he and Sophia discover together will inflame passions and a hunger that cannot be denied.
Sophia is a heroine strong in heart and mind. She is braver than most women would be of her era. She is selfless in her devotion to her mother, as well as any other people she calls friend. When her passion for Peter begins to develop, she is confused and frightened, convinced it is a result of her curse. Peter is deeply mysterious, never revealing his true reason for being there until it is absolutely necessary. He is there to do his duty, so is shocked to find himself falling for Sophia. When their love for one another overcomes them, it is extremely passionate and all encompassing. The secondary characters all add depth to the story... and secrets, from the servants of the household, to the family solicitor, to Sophia's cousin, Karl. All are well developed and fully fleshed out, making the reader feel for them as well.
This story is the stuff gothic romance is made of. There are dark secrets, an ancient mysterious castle, an unsuspecting heroine, and a mysterious dark hero. This book will delight readers and fans of horror, romance, and fantasy alike with the mystery and love story that unfolds here. The story grips readers in its clutches and will keep them reading long in to the night. The plot is fast moving and intriguing, with new details revealed at every turn. There is enough mystery throughout to keep one guessing and to make every character a suspect. When the true history - and fate - of the Mueller family is unfurled, readers will gasp in shock and a hint of fear.
Ms. Jones tells a chillingly, fascinating tale in Scent of the Wolf. Be sure to go out and pick up a copy of this book today. It is bound to satisfy.

Scent of the Wolf, a Compelling Read!.......2004-11-10
Tracy Jones has captured the dark, haunting flavor of a spine-chilling Gothic tale in Scent of the Wolf. Her descriptions are visual. You are there, among these fascinating characters on their mysterious journey toward an outcome that is unclear until the very end, as is the way with all memorable works of fiction. There is nothing predictable here. And then, as if that isn't enough, there is a twist ending that will give you gooseflesh. Guaranteed.
The characters are real--not just Sophia and Peter, but the secondary characters as well, and they are woven in in such a way as to keep the reader guessing until the final page is turned.
Forget all you've learned about werewolves. These are a new breed. They will haunt you long after you close the book and consign it to your shelf until you're ready to take it down and read it again. It's that good.
If you want a fast-paced, dark and spooky read by a talent author who is sure to shine through many more compelling books to come, Scent of the Wolf will not disappoint. I can't wait for the sequel.

Couldn't put it down!.......2004-11-10
This is a great book! It kept me on the edge of my seat thru the whole book wanting more. I just couldn't put it down!
This is an author that's going places!
Spellbinding!.......2004-11-10
This was a spell-binding book. I really enjoyed the characters and could picture each of them disctinctly in my mind, great descriptions. It was hard to put down once I started reading, it always kept me wondering what was next. I fell in love with Sophia and Peter and am anxiously awaiting a sequel.

Excellent book, gets better everytime I read it!!!!! I highly recommend it!
One of the best books I have ever read (and read and...).......2004-09-07
Reading this book for the first time was a joy.
Re-reading it always seems to reveal something new and interesting.
I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Fascinating book with deep meaning.......2001-07-22
The story can be had from the other reviews, but the deeper piece of this book is the near "religion" created by Driscoll called the "Gradient". It's fascinating how he uses this to energize and recruit men to his cause away from despair and hopelessness. It's a metaphor for all life and spirituality, but without a heavy hand. The Gradient is like the Force in Star Wars, but more believable and accessible.
Out of this world.......2000-12-20
Your typical sci-fi book-movie would have warriors killed or injured after pitched battles between two sides. but few have told of what happened to those captured. stuck for years in deathships cos the antlike aliens who caught them found it beneath their dignity to kill warriors who surrendered in battles, the humans have nothing to do but kill each other for food (ant gruel or cannibalism -- what a choice). how they survived and descriptions of the deathships off the antares platform are great. i like the way the 'anties' treat them to make sure they all die in the end but in a slow excruciating manner. How they escaped would make a good movie. star trek and star wars could learn a thing or two. how they try to defeat their enemies could result in sequels (anybody out there knows where i cd get other books by author?) I have read the book eight times in last few years (found it in second hand bookstore) for its clever prose. and of course the heart-stopping 'what will they do next?'. and oh yes, their leader driscoll is blind. END
Small book packs a big punch.......2000-07-14
This was an excellent short read - one of those that stays with you as you ponder it for days afterward. Driscoll took all of these thousands of disheartened man-beasts and gave them something: hope. Too bad that this author's other works never caught on as well.

Finally.......2007-08-13
My best friend is Colombian and turned me on to regional food (a lot like Mexican without all the lard, cheese and hot chilis) To have a tamale that doesn't taste & feel like lead was a pure joy, Colombian tamales are light & fluffy....delicious. His mom (like all Colombian women) kept all the recipes in her head, handed down from generation to generation by "doing" never by writing them out so she could only say "oh a handful of this, a pinch of that" therefore trying to duplicate her recipes after her visits was impossible. Now we have a cookbook and although I haven't tried the recipes yet, all of my favorites are in there and seem to be very consistent with his mom's, I can't wait to try them, let alone give a copy of this book to my friend.
Great Colombian recipes.........2007-03-08
I ordered this book b/c it was one of the FEW that is written and converted in to english (including the measurements). I have made a few of the dishes so far. My only complaint is that some of the recipes call for too much salt/sugar. And I like salt!! I will have to experiment with that but it wasn't enough to bring the book below a 5 star rating. I recommend this book if you like Colombian cooking. My Colombian fiance is pleased with it too!!
Great Book.......2006-07-21
It is a great book for anyone, not in Colombia, who wants to cook Colombian food. It provides easy to follow instructions and the best part of all, it describe the ingredients and gives the names of how you will find the ingredients in the US (or an equivalent). The only thing I did not like about the book, it has very few pictures...
Easy to Follow, Delicious, and Authentic.......2006-02-21
There are many treasures in Colombian Cooking; they are kept, however, mostly in Colombian Cook's minds, and handed down in oral traditions. Patricia McCAusland-Gallo meticulously unearthed many of those treasures, catalogued them, and translated them into easy to follow, well-measured recipes that manage to deliver the authentic flavor one longs for. She proves recipes don't need to be lengthy and complicated to be delicious.
EASY WAY TO LEARN COOKING!.......2006-02-17
I'm young and have just recently moved in with my soon to be husband! I cannot cook for my life but this book is absolutely the best cook book I've ever read! I have a few others but none are so easy to follow. I am Colombia of course so I feel great to know that I can make all the stuff my grandmother used to make for us all back in Colombia - it's like being there! Now all I have to do is get as good as my grandmother - but I know this book will definitely get me there! I HIGHLY recommend it to all beginners and even experts! You won't regret this purchase.

The Absolute to have for a starter.......2007-02-19
To start to show your dog this book should be your first reading. It was recommended to me by an AKC showdog breeder/handler.(Without this book I would have a hard time to understand the point system) Covers all the aspects of showing a dog from anatomy to the paperwork in an easy to read, and entertaining format. The "Tips from a Pro" is priceless.
I strongly recommend to anybody how is thinking to show their dog, or just to be familiar with dogshows and what handlers are doing in the ring and why.

Though the text is minimal and the illustrations are black and white, Vintage Clothing is packed with ideas for costume designers, clothing collectors and restorers, and even experienced home sewers who'd like to incorporate some historic flair into their designs. Using a combination of period fashion illustrations, old photographs, contemporary photos of period clothes, and detailed captions, the volume traces the evolution of a century of clothing styles. Although not as nicely produced as many other costume/fashion history books, the sheer variety and number of details on every page make it a worthwhile reference. Also included are estimates of the outfits' worth in today's market.
Customer Reviews:
Vintage Clothing: Worthy of having in your fashion library.......2004-05-18
This book deserves better reviews than it has received here. First of all, it was one of the very first "guides" written for vintage clothing collectors, and I still appreciate and value the nearly 300 pages of fashion images both illustrative and photographic.
As for the "value" guide; we know, or should know, that prices of vintage clothing can vary wildly depending on where you live, what is hot and what is not, if the seller wants to sell low and if the buyer wants to buy high. I think the prices indicated in this guide, though nearly ten years old, are still fairly accurate, adding 30 to 40 percent to the higher-end, rarer pieces and giving or taking 10 to 20 percent on the low end.
I believe Maryanne Dolan knows vintage clothing, and knows the field well. Her historical research is good, and her appreciation and passion for costume is inspiring. Her overviews of the periods at the beginning of each chapter are well-written, clear and easy to read.
It is true, however, that the book needs an index, some copy editing and perhaps a more sophisticated design layout for today's collectors. All seriously considered books need an index; just a fact of life in a costume or fashion researcher's world. Perhaps in a next edition?
It is wise to note that one isn't going to get rich buying and selling vintage clothing today -- a nice living perhaps, if you have a decent collection already established -- but a fantastic hobby is always a possibility.
An update is in order, but all in all, this is a good book worth having in your fashion history, vintage clothing or collecting library. Besides, when you can get 300 pages of pretty decent material for less than $10, how can you go wrong?
beware!!.......2003-02-03
I have a number of vintage clothing books in my library and have been collecting vintage clothing and accessories for almost 20 years. This book is the only one I have regretted buying. Many of the "illustrations" are black and white drawings that explain color and cut. The descriptions are not adequate-there are few if any makers names listed and there's no index to help in the process of looking up an item. Many of the models that are used do not carry the clothing well and since the photographs are in black and white you cannot see the pieces properly. The one thing that I can say that's positive is that she does list the time periods for the items she shows, and she does pack many plates into her book.
Not for all of us -.......2001-04-01
If you are looking for information on clothing between 1880 and about 1919, by all means, this is the book for you. But, if you're like me and you are looking for a book on clothing from 1930 on, pass this one up. More than 3/4 of this book is dedicated to victorian clothing. You can also tell which decades this author favors. While pictures of models (if you can really call these women models) in victorian clothing are carefully posed and accessorized, the more current clothing is slapped on just about anyone who would stand still long enough to have their picture taken. Example - the 60+ year old woman in the WEDDING DRESS. There are really no clothing from the 70s or 80s in this book and the 50s and 60s are very sparse. The prices are also unreasonably high for the average collector. I was EXTREMELY disappointed with this book. But I do have to admit I did get a couple of giggles from some of the pitiful pictures.
Overall, a bit disappointing.......1998-11-03
I have just started studying and researching vintage clothing. I did not find this book to be all that helpful. The value guide seems to be very high. Some of the pictures are interesting and the summaries at the beginning of the chapters are somewhat helpful, however, I feel there are better books available for research.
Not great, but good; fun to look at, high prices........1998-08-24
Dolan's Guide is good, but not great- it is in need of some extra editing, and a wider variety of fashions. But, it is a -vast- improvenment over the first edition. Her price estimates, while they may seem high, are actually accurate reflections of the prices paid in large cities. Here in the Midwest, we cut her prices by 2/3 in order to get fair, practical prices and values. Also, the book is targeted not toward the fashion lover, or vintage clothing store owner, but to the -collector- of vintage fashion; this is why the prices are high: it's not a guide to the vintage fashion industry, but a price guide (of course, as its title suggests) for antique dealer and collector. (Personally, I find this a little unrealistic, as I've never met anyone who actually -collects- vintage fashions, but maybe I'm just mixing with the wrong crowd.) It is also a -fun- read; I own few other books I can always enjoy this much, for as little as five minutes to as long as two hours. Also, be sure to read the long introductions at the beginning of each chapter; they are as much fun as the illustrations, and provide an excellent overview of each period. Her guide to rhinestone jewelery is also good, better even than this.

Almost Perfect.......but missed the mark.......2001-07-13
From the opening page to almost the middle of the book is absolutely wonderful! The photographs are exquisitely done in color, the descriptions are complete & there are usually no more than 4-6 photos per page. Suddenly, it stops and the reader is left with pages filled with very small, black & white photos and wondering "What the heck happened??" The smaller compacts should have been the ones in the larger pictures and they are screaming for color! As for the educational & reference content, this book is hard to beat and will make an excellent tool for reading about the mechanisms of vintage compacts. Plus, the variety of compacts is mind-boggling! Recommended purchase but don't expect 100% satisfaction with the photographs & layouts.
a complement to the Mueller books.......2001-06-21
Gerson knows her compacts--she is an absolute authority, and this book gives many fine examples of compacts from all periods of time as well as good information about collecting. The color photos are a joy to look at. However, I don't like the way the book is organized--it's difficult to find what your looking for because things aren't arranged in logical order. In addition, I think it's a shame to have black and white photos--the majority of compacts really can't be appreciated unless they are seen in color, hence my 4-star rating. Mueller's two books are arranged better, with color photos for every compact, and Gerson should have tried to emulate that while making the book her own. But this book complements Mueller's, and for a rabid compact collector, this book is a welcome addition to the other books out there.
A visual feast for compact collectors & useful information.......2001-04-19
This book is simply beautiful. It is full of every kind of example of vintage compacts made, the photography of the compacts is stunning and many are in color. Plus it includes useful information for compact collectors on the history of compacts, helpful hints in collecting , vintage advertisments of compacts and how to identify and determine exact date compacts were made through patten numbers which Gerson includes at the end of the book. I got my copy of this book from Gerson herself through the Compacts collector club which she is the president of, autographed for me by her and although this particular edition of her book is out of print I would highly recommend her new one vintage and vogue ladys compacts as well. For all those fellow compact collectors these books are a must.

Customer Reviews:
This guide offers some unusual and useful information........1999-06-03
Kristina Harris, a respected author in the field of historic fashion, presents suggestions which are useful for beginning collectors (to get them started on the right foot) and for long-time collectors whose "stuff" is overwhelming them. Topics include shaping and building a collection, care and display of vintage textiles, organizing and keeping records of your collection, identification and price guides. The book also has chapters devoted to topics not frequently addressed in similar books--such as historic fashion plates and labels. The volume is lavishly illustrated, mostly in full color.
Nice pictures but unreliable information.......1999-03-19
This book has some pretty pictures (if you don't mind the models having modern hairstyles, makeup, and poses). However, don't buy it for the content. Much of the fashion history/ID information is inaccurate (such as the assertion that women first wore bonnets in the 1840s), or meaningless (such as the statement that "Black and white fashion plates were used from their inception right up to their demise"). The collecting information seems oriented toward museums--not people who actually wear vintage clothes and deal with real-life cleaning, storage, and mending issues. All in all, this book was a disappointment.
This is a fabulous book with much pertinent information........1999-03-04
Kristina Harris has done it again. Her new book has a wealth of information for the collector. The pictures are colorful and clear and offer a closeup view of various eras of clothing. The prices are helpful; the text is full of researched material that is extremely interesting. The book invites you in to learn a lot!

beautiful sachets!.......2003-09-07
Wonderful ideas for different styles and shapes for sachets. Most are pretty ornate but the pictures help with their assembly. If you're looking for the potpourri though you need to find another book since this one only has one page at the back that talks to potpourri recipes.
Not what I thought I was getting........1999-09-04
This book focuses on the outside of the sachet -- how to make artsy little fabric bags to hold herbs. The author includes only a few recipes for actual herbal blends, which was what I was hoping to find. (More specifically, I was hoping to find information on individual herbs to help one in blending sachets for various purposes.)If your interest is on the exterior of the sachet, this is may be what you are looking for, but if you want information to help you blend the herbs, this is not the place to get it.
Absolutely gorgeous sachets! Great potpourri recipes........1998-10-08
The entire book is filled with beautiful and easy-to-make sachets. They are great as gifts and don't take any time to make. Terrific shower presents! Each sachet is beautifully designed for those who like fine things. The book itself would be great present for your sewing friends.

Book Description
Swashbuckling sailors, dashing dukes, naughty nurses, and sexy steward-esses caught in webs of love, passion, betrayal, and intrigue: these are the raw materials of the romance novel--and the lusty covers that advertise them. In The Look of Love, Jennifer McKnight-Trontz provides a rollicking history of the covers and stories that have captivated millions of readers worldwide. More than 150 of the most sensational covers from this venerable if venal literary form are shown in glorious color, focusing on the period from 1940 to 1970, romance design's most fertile era. The Look of Love features artwork and excerpts from titles such as Passion Flower, Kept Woman, Rendezvous in Lisbon, and Jungle Nurse. Along the way, it brings attention to the pioneers of the romance novel: cover artists such as Barye Phillips and Robert Maguire, who helped define the look of paperbacks in general, and Harlequin, the grand dame of romance publishers, with more than 100 million novels sold each year. McKnight-Trontz reveals the themes that typify both the story lines and the covers--hospital romance, the rich and raunchy, royalty, tropical paradises, Westerns, "taboo" relationships, pirates and warriors, and love triangles--resulting in this definitive compendium of camp. A book for romance lovers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Avant romance reader.......2006-09-03
I am a sucker for good romance novels and this one held my interest. It was a very good book read. Janie De Coster author of Man of My Dreams?
Lust, passion, betrayal and that's just the cover!.......2002-08-11
Individually these covers are very dull as graphic designs but put 150 in a book and they become interesting. As the author says in the intro, the paperback romance has come a long way. For years the covers of this literary genre had a dominant painting, predictably of the heroine, mediocre typography for the title, blurb and author's name. By the seventies things had changed for the better and covers took on the full force of the Marketing Division, image space was reduced to make way for expressive typography (some of it very good too) die-cut holes, foil stamping, embossing, fluorescent inks, thermography and varied paper stock.
Unfortunately there is only one example of the contemporary look ('Hearts Aflame' by Johanna Lindsey) in the 150 shown. Mostly they are American covers from the forties to the mid-sixties, some from Canada and a few from Mills and Boon the main British romance publisher. Each of the nine chapters has a page of intro text printed on slightly yellowing paper, leading into the covers, a nice touch on these intro pages is the turned over top right-hand corner creating a bookmark, as one does with inexpensive books. Some of the covers also have the back shown and you can read the clichéd copy written to convince the casual book browser that they really do want to know what happened next.
This is worthwhile addition to my popular culture book collection and if you want more have a look at the six hundred covers in Richard Lupff's `The Great American Paperback', a book of coffee-table proportions covering all genres but which I found rather disappointing because of its sloppy production.
I don't think I'm giving too much away if I quote the last page of `The Look of Love'...
"That's what it's like, darling," said Mrs. Stokes uneasily, "Being a doctor's wife, I mean."
"I know," said Linette softly, her eyes starry. "Isn't it wonderful?"

As much an art book as a literary survey.......2002-04-10
As much an art book as a literary survey, Look Of Love considers the covers and stories of the romance market which have captivated millions from 1940-70. From changing themes of romance novels - such as women who come to struggle between careers and love - to changing images of women and passion, this is a colorful and revealing survey.

Book Description
The true story of an African-American man who found, through faith and the self-assurance it provided, the strength to break free of the cycle of poverty and despair that had once characterized his life.
John W. Fountain grew up on some of the meanest streets in Chicago, where drugs, crime, decay, and broken homes consigned so many black children to a life of despair and self-destruction. A father at seventeen, a college dropout at nineteen, a welfare case soon after, Fountain was on the verge of giving up all hope. One thing saved him--his faith, his own true vine.
True Vine is John Fountain's remarkable story--of his childhood in a neighborhood heading south; of his strong-willed grandparents, who founded a church (called True Vine) that sought to bring the word of God to their neighbors; of his mother, herself a teenage parent, whose truncated dreams help nurture bigger dreams in him; of his friends and cousins, whose youthful exuberance was extinguished by the burdens they faced; and of his religious awakening that gave him the determination to rebuild his life.
Today John Fountain is an award-winning reporter for The New York Times, based in his hometown. His return to Chicago marks how his story has come full circle, this time in triumph. True Vine is an inspiring, moving, gripping story of one man's American dream--a dream that all of us can share.

An Inspirational Beacon.......2004-04-13
With True Vine, John W. Fountain has created an inspirational beacon. Not only has he trail blazed a path for all of the inner-city youth struggling in the jungle of poverty, he has written a travelogue of hope for all the souls who may have lost sight of their dreams.
This is one of the best books I have read, and will most likely be among my top 10 for the year. I wrote something down from this book that I know I will take away with me and remember for a long time: "You can't stop dreaming or you start to die."
When I first picked up this book, I was worried it would be a non-stop preach-fest; it turned out to be an inspiring tale of despair, hope, and faith.
Even though I grew up in a ranch house on a cul-de-sac in a well-to-do white Chicago suburb with grassy lawns and two-car garages, this book made me feel like I grew up in the poverty stricken neighborhoods of the west side of Chicago. It made me feel like a part of John W. Fountain's circle of friends and family.
This is the kind of book that comes along only once in a while. True Vine is a true treasure.
Inspirational and Awe Inspiring.......2004-04-13
This author's life story demonstrates how a refusal to accept society's "labels" and a strong determination, coupled with a strong faith in God can overcome even the most challenging and disappointing events in life. Several times while reading this book I had to stop, pause, reflect, sometime cry, sometime laugh and at other times feel encouraged. Just knowing that this author endured many of the same disappointments, hardships of being a teenage parent, ridicule by society and so called friends validated my pain and my struggles. This should be a required reading for all teenagers.
A Fountain of Truth: Revelations that Stir the Soul.......2004-04-02
In the book True Vine, Fountain writes a timeless and powerful message of truth and consequences. It is a personal testimony that speaks to youth and adults alike...if you believe in (God) a power greater than yourself and apply positive action (faith and hard work) to fuel your beliefs, there is absolutely nothing that you cannot do. My grandmother used to say "He (God) may not come when you want him, but He's right on time". Fountain uses bits of wisdom like this, as shared by elders in his family, to help us understand the power of faith and the proof as is manifested in his survival and ultimate success. Long after you read this book, you will feel the despair of an impoverished K-town; and, it has to make one think about how many neighborhoods exist today where children and families barely survive (and many don't) through unspeakable horrors, insufferable living conditions and unbelieveable hardships -- in America, the richest country in the world? But the saving grace in this story for me is that John W. Fountain not only survived and succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, but that he cared enough to honestly share his story with the world. True Vine is a true story -- one that reveals some of the hidden truths about family, community, poverty, its victims and its survivors. True Vine is a branch of knowledge that provides us with food for thought about problems and solutions that we, as individuals, as viable members of communities and organizations, can all take part in -- righting the wrongs -- fighting poverty and violence. With faith as our foundation, one step at a time, we can help build prosperity in underprivileged neighborhoods for future generations. Fountain can be likened to the "voice crying in the wilderness" from which many will hear and be saved. This book is truly a fountain of revelations. It is much more than a personalized how-to-succeed book. There is a lesson in every chapter that should be read by every child and every parent in America. I am certain that this is not the last time we will hear from this great author. I for one, will be looking for more.
Such a Book--Such a Life!.......2004-02-21
I found myself unable to put this book down even for sleep. It's one of those books you read from cover to cover, then promptly begin to put together the names of friends and family who simply MUST read this book.
I was deeply touched by his unwavering faith and integrity as he wrote about his life in the Chicago ghetto--up through poverty, his setbacks in life, and again recouping to claim a better life for himself and his family. I was most impressed by his early and continued determination to lead an exemplary male life, not wavering in his responsibilities to provide security and leadership no matter the adversity. His strong message of faith is a personal one, clearly and directly told. It is a touching, sincere, very warm book and so worth your time and money. You'll love it, I'm sure of it.
My Re-newed Faith.......2004-02-03
I was feeling pretty down when I picked up True Vine, I knew that I needed to know that I wasn't alone in what life was throwing at me at the time, I had no idea that this book would Re-new my Faith, and give me the Courage to keep going on. My sad, went to glad, my downs went to ups, my bad, went to good, and My Spirit Soared!!!!!!!God put John W. Fountain on this earth to give us our Faith Back, and to know that through God, all things are Possible, God Bless and Keep John, can't wait for book number two........
