Book Description

Established early in the last century as a memorial to the great American short story master O. Henry, throughout its history this annual collection has consistently offered a remarkable sampling of contemporary short stories. Each year, stories are chosen from large and small literary magazines, and a panel of distinguished writers is enlisted to make the final selection. The result is a superb collection of inventive, full-bodied stories representing the very best in American and Canadian fiction.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It.......2003-02-06

A few of these stories were memorable, but last year's edition was better and so is Houghton Mifflin's "Best American Short Stories 2002," which shares three of the stories. Don't worry that one of the judges edits the periodical that published the winning story -- it was one of the few intense stories in this book. Most of the stories are just character and setting studies by authors who added notes like, "I wrote the beginning, and then I didn't know where to go with the story." Apparently, the judges like to read about different people and places, but I don't. I like memorable stories that aren't filled with description, like the best works of O. Henry, which were not character sketches. Irony, still common in short fiction, is almost absent from this anthology.

3 out of 5 stars weak collection.......2003-01-19

I've picked up the last few years worth of the Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, and usually I'm not disappointed, but this year I was. I've read most of volumes Dark has edited, and usually I agree with him on most if not all the stories, but I found this year's selection to be different. There are some good stories in the volume, but most of the stories are mediocre, dull, or just plain bad. But one bad volume doesn't spoil it for me. I still eagerly wait for next year's selection.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2002-11-28

According to the editor of PRIZE STORIES 2002: THE O. HENRY AWARDS, thousands of short stories from hundreds of magazines were painstakingly reviewed in an effort to compile an anthology of the year's best in stort story fiction. This year twenty stories made the list while three of them were voted the best by the jurors Dave Eggers, Joyce Carol Oates and Colson Whitehead. I personally do not agree with the juror's selection of the top short stories, which is a clear indication of how subjectivity is involved in the process of judging literature. What is enjoyable to one person certainly might not be for another. I've been reading this analogy periodically during the past couple of weeks and I finished with mixed feeling. Some stories intrigued me while others were downright uncaptivating. In addition, a couple were so utterly strange that they could be episodes of the twilight zone!

Out of this collection my favorite short story was A.M. Homes' "Do Not Disturb", which is a tale of a husband trying his best to emotionally deal with his bitter terminally ill wife as their marriage falls apart. I also enjoyed Anthony Doerr's "The Hunter's Wife" about how a husband deals with the supernatural powers of his wife in Montana. The reason why I didn't give this book five stars is because I believe that there are more losers than winners in this collection. But don't just take my word for it. Remember that the appreciation of literature is subjective. You just may love it!

4 out of 5 stars It must've been a good year..........2002-11-04

This collection includes the winners of the 2002 O. Henry Prize as well as fifteen or so of the stories short-listed for the awards. I enjoyed all of the stories in the collection though I didn't necessarily like the prize-winners best. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and fitting departure for editor Dark........2002-10-16

Editor Larry Dark has taken many unconventional chances in his tenure with the O. Henry series. Many of his inclusions have bucked popular trends, and he has never shied away from unusual or objectionable topics. This collection is no different in its broad and daring scope. A great read for those who love short fiction.

    Book Description

Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie's tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up, remains one of the most beloved children's books ever written. For nearly a hundred years, kids across the world have drifted off to sleep dreaming about Tinker Bell and the Lost Boys, pixie dust and ticking clocks, crocodiles and Captain Hook. But in spite of the story's visual richness, it has never been illustrated photographically until now.

In this lavishly produced edition of the unabridged adventure classic, designer and illustrator Raquel Jaramillo interprets Peter Pan through her wondrous photographic imagery. By blending illustration, photography, and computer technology, she blurs the lines between fiction and reality. The result is fresh and startlingly beautiful -- pure magic. Neverland comes alive with the immediacy and drama of a movie. Pirates stalk savage forests, mermaids swim through sun-kissed seas, children fly above undiscovered islands. Portrayed with a flesh-and-blood intimacy, the beloved characters of Peter Pan, Wendy Darling, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell, and Nana seem more real than ever before.

Part ghost story, part love story, tender, funny, and wise, Peter Pan is a haunting work that appeals equally to boys and girls. But in the wake of numerous abridged retellings, the famous Disney adaptation, and other big-screen updates, the true nature of the novel has been somewhat forgotten, its impact diminished with each passing generation. Jaramillo's stunning re-creation secures the legacy of the tale, in all its complexity, for a second century. It will prove to be as ageless as Peter himself.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Success of digital photo in storytelling........2002-12-26

I've read the story/play before getting this book, and I must say the digital images really elaborates a new wave of magic. The digital imaging photographs are great in company with the writing. The colors are fantastic and the typography really promotes the tension of the plotline. For any illustration or fine art student this is one book you must have for reference. It is like taking Disney's Peter Pan into live action, except with lesser background scenes.

5 out of 5 stars at last the full story- again!.......2001-11-28

For those who have never read J. M. Barrie's long, quirky & involved story of a boy who can fly, loses his shadow & talks with fairies & the girl who befriends him & learns to fly too. It's all there & I was surprised at how long it is. It could take a month of daily reading to your children to finish it!

This complete & unabridged original tale of Neverland(no, it was not ever Never Never Land!) is rich in Victorian/Edwardian England's sense of humor & propriety; of starched strangers getting to know each other across social barriers; of precious parents torn with guilt & passionate dogs bereft of duty. Of cocky young boys & mean-spirited pirates; of exotic redskins & luring mermaids & that dreadful ticking crocodile! Certainly not for the politically correct!

It is also rich in an entirely new way for Raquel Jaramillo has set Barrie's story to photographs in an immediate, fantastically textured, dreamy & magical way. This illustrator has refreshed the images to this oft-abbreviated story & revived its delightful & scary philosophies.

Psychology & political correctness aside, Raquel Jaramillo has done well with this master storyteller's greatest tale. Adults & children alike will be able to identify with the whole cast & once again become immersed in the magic.

"Second to the right & then straight on until morning..." how many nights did I slip into sleep, murmuring that phrase & dreaming I was on my way to Neverland where the Lost Boys made their homes(after all, girls were much too clever ever to fall out of their prams & get lost!)

5 out of 5 stars Unabridged and relived.......2001-08-18

Simon and Schuster present the original, unabridged tale of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie to a new generation of readers. The 1911 tale is in a large sized book with 134 pages and colorfully illustrated life-like pictures.

I remember the story of Wendy Darling, her brothers, parents, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Neverland, the mermaids, Tiger Lily, and all the wonderful situations that made up this animated fairytale in print. From the moment Wendy and Peter Pan meet, to the first flight, to the trips to Neverland and all the escapades that followed, to the end with a grown up Wendy and her own child -- it's all here in the manner in which it was really meant to be told. It's too unique to be missed by young or old. Rereading it as a grown-up was a magical experience.

Although I see nothing wrong with the Disney adaptation of Peter Pan, I am glad to see the original version back in fresh print. There isn't anything in Peter Pan I feel would affect young children, it's just a lengthy tale that would most likely take a week of bedtime reads to finish.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure beauty.......2001-06-18

This book tells the original story that started the Pan legend before TV and movies hooked it into something else. The story remains timeless as expected of a classic, but this time awesome new illustrations by Raquel Jaramillo will send parents and children to Neverland in spite of the cost. Computer graphics enhance the illustrator's classy depictions and add to the wonder of a tale that remains ageless and beautiful. The youngster inside all of us will love this great rendition that the author would have loved to read and show to his friend's children.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic!.......2001-06-06

Truly, I was taken aback when I first pulled this gorgeous book out of its wrappings. The illustration and pure magic that jumps out from every page will enchant children all of ages (even big kids like me!) This edition of Peter Pan was written and designed with love for the story; that is evident! You'll find a map inside the cover, showing the Lost Boys Territory, Buccaneer Zone, Deadman's Isles, among other things.

Peter Pan presented like this makes a beautiful coffee table book. You'll be anxious to read this to your children, and your older kids will engross themselves over it, too.

This is not the Peter Pan we had growing up! I highly recommend this book to parents and children who really appreciate a classic and a keepsake.

5 out of 5 stars It's helping me save my life.......2007-08-02

I am plagued with multiple chronic health issues and have been on a personal quest to improve my health. Over the years I had consumed numerous freshly made organic juices from various stores and felt a slight positive change in my health. However, it wasn't until I purchased this book and began weekly drinking two to four cups of juice combinations from within it that I began to feel the juices had made a tremendous positive change in my health. My first clue to the power of the recipes was the strong feelings of increased strength and well being that began twenty minutes after drinking a cup of juice. Over the next two months my acne completely disappeared, my face had more of a glow than an oily sheen, and my hair began to regain its luster. The changes were so apparent that numerous people remarked how healthy I looked. I can only imagine the health benefits it's had that are not so easily seen.

Today I had a hidden allergen in my lunch that left my intestines painfully inflamed. As soon as I could I referred to this book and juiced a recipe to soothe my symptoms. Much to my delight, it worked! I can see and feel the positive impact the juice is having on my recovery.

This book is helping me save my life!

4 out of 5 stars Quick, informative guide to juicing.......2007-03-12

I gave 4 and not 5 stars because the author did not enclose a recipe for hyperthyroidism and chose to focus on hypothyroidism only because "it's more common". Judging from the amount of text on the other condition, I beg to differ. However, anything with Brussel sprouts and broccoli will help manage a hyperthyroid condition.

Also some of the recipes reference vitamin mixtures sold exclusively by the author, who is Australian- so ordering may be a bit impractical for non-Australian readers. However, this book is a great reference on what juices are best for common conditions and even gives tips on which fruits and veggies complement each other on taste and which do not. All I need is a list of ingredients and I'm off to the market. The ingredient amounts also make enough juice for 3 servings a day- which is great because they recommend that the nutritional value of juices diminish after a few hours. By necessity, I make juice the night before for breakfast but the juice is still fresh.

    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-06-29

I love the recipes in this book. They are easy to make and they taste great.

You can create life saving juices according to the area of health concern. Definately a must have.

5 out of 5 stars great little juicing guide - all you need.......2005-12-05

This book has all you need to know about medicinal juicing in
a deceptively small and easy to read package. I used her
antibiotic juice in lieu of a prescription antibiotic and it
cleared everything up in just 2 days. All her recipes seem to be very effective. Highly recommended especially if you are just
    starting out with juicing.

5 out of 5 stars Truly exceptional book.......2006-07-27

I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.

1 out of 5 stars A space filler book .......2006-06-23

The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-12

I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Reference but not Perfect.......2006-03-04

Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

Yes, I agree with Gay Ashley, this book is great. Harban's rich and varied colour photographs of wooden bobbins bring this facinating subject to life. I recently purchased a 3 spindle, 4 ply oak/pine hybrid bobbin, and was amazed to learn it was worth four dollars more than the fifty three dollars I paid for it. Of course, this marvellous wooden world would not be complete without the commentary of Graham Fellowes, and let's face it, he's at his best when he's talking bobbins.

The pictures are really nice. It's a great reference guide for any bobbin collector and the first one I've ever seen.

The World Of Wooden Bobbins is an excellent resource guide. It offers insight into the history of the textile industry from ancient times to the present. Quite a bit of information is presented in an enjoyable and easy to read format. This book also provides color pictures, and suggestions for the collecting and use of antique textile mill relics. Many examples of the types of wooden bobbins that were used and their purpose at the mill are also provided. This book does not give values for the items described, however if you have an interest in our industrial past this is a fascinating book.

                    Book Description

The book brings together a wide variety of ravishing illustrations of the cut flower in the history of European fine and decorative art since 1500. The inclusion of non-European traditions, such as those of China, Japan and the Indian sub-continent enrich the visual material and illustrate the differences between cultures.A series of thematic chapters follows a broadly chronological arrangement of works of fine and decorative art, manuscripts and books. The early symbolism and mythologies associated with flowers will be illustrated through beautifully detailed medieval illuminated manuscripts. Illustrations of paintings, textiles, furniture, silver and ceramics will focus on individual flowers through the course of the book.Accompanies an exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum amp; Art Gallery and Sheffield Millennium Galleries.

Long before Jackie Robinson crossed baseball's color line, before Jack Johnson spawned a line of Great White Hopes desperate to take the heavyweight boxing crown back from a black man, Major Taylor was setting records and fighting bigotry in one of the most popular athletic arenas of the turn of the century. The "Extraordinary" in the title of this steady biography is not just spinning wheels.

Both a world and national champion, Taylor bicycled to glory on three continents. His name on the marquee meant added revenue and attendance. In Europe, he was a superstar, and treated like one. Yet he was mocked by fellow riders in America, shunned by his sport's establishment, and died forgotten and penniless in Chicago in 1932. Part of why Taylor should be remembered is the way he reacted to the hatred he had to ride against: "I always played the game fairly and tried my hardest," he wrote in his own autobiography, which Ritchie thoroughly mines, "although I was not always given a square deal or anything like it ... I only ask from them the same kind of treatment which I give and am willing to continue to give."

Ritchie does yeoman's service in reviving Taylor's story and giving it context with a carefully studied examination of what life was like for black Americans 100 years ago. More importantly, he reaches into the muck of the past and returns with a clear picture of an endangered species: the thoroughly decent human being. --Jeff Silverman

                    Book Description

World champion at 19... One of the first black athletes to become world champion in any sport... 1-mile record holder... American sprint champion in 1898, 1899, 1900... triumphant tours of Europe and Australia... Victories against all European champions...

Until now a forgotten, shadowy figure, Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor is here revealed as one of the early sports world's most stylish, entertaining, and gentlemanly personalities. Born in 1878 in Indianapolis, the son of poor rural parents, Taylor worked in a bike shop until prominent bicycle racer "Birdie" Munger coached him for his first professional racing successes in 1896. Despite continuous bureaucratic--and, at times, physical--opposition, he won his first national championship two years later and became world champion in 1899 in Montreal. This beautifully illustrated, vividly narrated, and scrupulously researched biography recreates the life of a great international athlete at the turn of the century. Based on ten years of research--including extensive interviews with Major Taylor's 91-year old daughter--this is the dramatic story of a young black man who, against prodigious odds, rose to fame and stardom in the tempestuous world of international professional bicycle racing a century ago.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent early history of cycling and of a forgotten icon.......2004-09-03

As Ritchie points out himself, it is surprising that it took a white englishman to compile such a comprehensive history of an American black man who was one of, if not the first black world champion in any sport and one of cycling's orginal superstars.

While the book makes for a good short history of the early years of cycling as a sport and how it has evolved, Taylor's transcends the sport of cycling and provides a rich glimpse into early 20th century racial issues, the development of transportation in the US, the twighlight of the Guilded Age and the onset of the Great Depression. Ritchie weaves all of these together in a compelling manner.

In hindsight, while the likes of Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson are often credited with being the original trailblazers for black athletes, they owe much to the brave steps taken by the now sadly little remembered Major Taylor. This book is long overdue.

5 out of 5 stars Important History - Not Just About Bicycling.......1999-04-22

This book was originally published by Bicycle Books in San Francisco. I would hope that it would still be available, even though 5 years ago hardback copies were selling at chain bookstores for as little as $4 a copy. The Ritchie book is written not just from the perspective of bicycling history (although it is well-researched from that point of view), but as an important social history. In addition, it reminds us of the history of the development of transportation and how bicycles were eventually pushed out of the public vision of having right-of-way to being relegated to the closed track of the velodrome so they wouldn't get in the way of the growing automobile culture. Major Taylor's career is important in the history of racism and attempted and often effective exclusion of Blacks not just from racing opportunities, but from the subsequent business opportunities that followed on the heels of the age of the turn-of-the-century racers. The largest reason that Major Taylor died a pauper was because he was not allowed to participate on an equal level with White businessmen in the developing automobile industry, according to Ritchie's research. Turn of the century bicycle racers, as Ritchie points out, were instrumental in contributing to the design of the shock system and the use of pneumatic tires, among other features, of the emerging American automobile. They also were some of the large investors in the industry upon their retirement from active racing status. Taylor wanted to participate in the design process and applied to a university for formal education in engineering, but was denied access, despite his hard-won efforts, previous inventions in bicycle design and testing, and celebrity status. The fact that the man died early of a stroke and alienated from his family and community in the end can only speak of a man who, after putting out his entire life, had finally been broken by the pressure of living in a racist society. Yet, writing his autobiography and selling it door to door evokes the phoenix-like quality of many members of the Black community who survive and thrive in spite of great hardship, even in our present times.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, very well documented important historical work.......1999-03-31

This is a very enjoyable book. Very well researched and documented (almost to a fault). Anyone who is serious about the history of bicycle racing in the USA must add this book to their library. After reading this book one must wonder how great Major Taylor would have been if the playing field was equal. Highly Recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Major Taylor, worlds greatest cyclist of incredible morals.......1997-02-14

I found this story of a black man in this early 1900 era extremely fascinating. His beliefs in fair play, extrodinary dedication to his faith and his hobby made him a role model for any and all to follow. his persistance in perfecting his beloved sport despite all of the negativity of this era, to me was unbelieveable. I read few books cover to cover but I have had the pleasure of reading this one 4 times. Ritchie has this book so well documented that anyone reading it would have no problem of becoming totally engrossed in it. A well done from me.
