Inspirational!.......2006-03-04
This is a sobering, down-to-earth look at the everyday struggles of the family unit. It's easy to relate to the characters and many of the situations. Also, it reminds us that even in the face of adversity, faith & family will help you overcome....very inspirational!

This is a good book. I found the story to be very uplifting. Some parts brought tears to my eyes and others brought a smile.
I was reminded that we all have strength that we somehow find when it's truly needed.

Reading this book and seeing how the family members depend on God was very inspirational. It was helpful to read about their real-life situations and how they got through them. Their resilience touched my heart.

Crucial to the Saga, but not as good as the first........2005-12-14
This review is for book 2 only, not for the all four books like alot of the other reviews out there. This is the second book in The War Against the Chtorr series and we find our hero Jim Mcarthy and Duke leading a squad of bug killing marines until they get called away on a special mission. To make a long story short, there is a helicopter crash, a critical death, and a new Chtorran species discovered. Based on events in the book Jim finds himself believing that humans and the giant worms called chtorrs could live on earth in a peacful harmony. Can we?, or are we destined down the path of unavoidable war? You will have to read to find out! The book only gets four stars because there are spans of the book that get very boring and the action has decreased alot in this book. I would say this book is for story and building and to go into more detail of the vastness and the advancment of the Chtorran ecology over ours. I realy enjoyed the book except for those 2 or 3 spans I had trouble keeping my eyes open during. I haven't read the third book yet but the ending of this book has me pining to get the third. It isn't easy to find localy and on amazon it seems a little pricey for such and old book but maybe that's because they are so hard to get a hold of. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read A Matter for Men, like I need to, if you read A Matter for Men you are probably just as anxious to read this as I am to read A Rage for Revenge!!
Buy This Book and then Hang On- The Wait is Almost Over.......2005-09-21
Kill whomever you have to, but read this series. If you are in the joint, make sure that the prison library has this one in stock. If you have to take five books on a desert island, let this series be books one through four, with the Boy Scout manual or the bible (your preference, faith or survival) being number five.
When I first read this series, I was still living at home with my parents. My mother got it for me because I was laid up off of work from a fall compounded with electrical burns from a 12,000 volt line (I used to be an electrician...it wasn't that injury that caused me to leave). Knowing my love for good SF and SF series, and seeing the "creepy-bug-worm-things" on the cover, she picked it up, hoping the series would help keep my mind off of my injuries.
It worked...quite well, in fact. I was so engrossed in the books that I finished them all in a span of 3 1/2 days.
This is easily some of the best post-modern SF that I have ever read. Sicker yet, Gerrold's future is starting to look a lot like our own present...anyone seen any creepy worms yet?
And then the waiting began....
However, I have news!
Having just visited Gerrold's site, as of July 4th of 2004, he had more than 250,000 words done on book five: "A Method for Madness." However, upon telling the publishers that it would break 300K, he was told to split it up, so we're looking at 166K words on book five, not counting sideline stuff, 66K into book six, and it seems that he'll be finishing it relatively soon.
He has sample chapters available on his website, www.gerrold.com
So, rejoice...the time of deliverance is almost at hand!
I'm guessing that book five will hit the shelves sometime next year...then again, I haven't searched Amazon...there may be more updates.
And about that desert island...if book five hits, say goodbye to the bible or the boy scout manual, or sneak 'em in your daypack.
They're that damn good.
Gerrold Betrays Readers.......2002-09-25
The first 4 books of this series are one of the greatest achievements in Sci-Fi literature. That also makes it one of the greatest betrayals ever perpetrated by an author upon his readers. I don't know what the deal is, greed, illness, a lobotomy, but books 5 (A Method for Madness) & 6 (A Time for Treason) don't look like they will ever see daylight. I found the author's site where there is mention of a movie based on the series but I don't think it's going anywhere and he wouldn't reply to email.
There is a special place in **** reserved for authors of unfinished series, David Gerrold claimed his with this one. I recommend against reading this, it's too painful to stop so abruptly. An incredible tragedy.
Wonderful Science Fiction.......2000-06-22
Th ewar against the chtorr is a post apocaliptic setting that immediately grabs your attention. The Main character is very real, and not at all the classic hero type. David Gerrold does a wonderful job of making us feel the world from the eyes of this character. A great serious science fiction piece for people who like works like the Postman.
A Case for a Classic.......1999-12-28
The War against the Chtorr series of books was first published in the mid eighties. At a later point, the incomplete series was rereleased with a few changes. I first read the first three novels in a single hardback collection that I borrowed from a friend's house, and loved it. At the time, I was unaware that David Gerrold had also written "the Trouble with Tribbles." This set has been with me through multiple moves, and is the last book I will read this millenium. This series has not become dated--in fact, many of the thoughts remain refreshingly new. David has created a very complete world that is easy to enjoy. The characterizations are complex, the plot engaging, and along with the intense descriptions combine to present a seamless experience. However, the series remains unfinished, so ultimately, you must resolve the fate of the world yourself.
Customer Reviews:
The only series of books that I spend time searching for........2000-06-10
I loved this book. Where the first book introduces you to the main character and hints at the atrocities that are happening around him, this book sinks under your skin and hooks you. I couldn't stop reading. I had to know what fate our poor planet was in for. Gerrold always makes his characters touchable, but in A Day for Damnation you find yourself wondering about those characters even after they are worm food. So much goes on page after page that I had to go back and read it again just to make sure I didn't miss any of the subtle plots. You just know it's going to pop up on you in the next novel. I've recommended it to all my science fiction reading friends and family. And I still am after reading it 8 years ago.

Interesting stuff........2006-09-21
Elizabeth Bear, The Chains that You Refuse (Night Shade, 2006)
When a writer opens a book of short stories with a vignette about a bar in the afterlife where a number of controversial writers from the ages congregate, it's pretty easy for me to rest assured that I'm going to like the book a bunch. It was no surprise whatever to me that Miz Bear didn't let me down.
The Chains That You Refuse consists of twenty-two stories (and one poem), whch range from the good ("Gone to Flowers," which-- I admit-- I might've liked more had I actually gotten off my duff and read the Jenny Casey novels before getting to this) to the "worth the price of the book for this story alone" ("Tiger! Tiger!," in which... oh, you just have to read it for yourself, too many people have already given it away).
The biggest thing that bugged me had not to do with the stories themselves, but the caesurae. Booklist's review comments that on the fact that the stories are "all over the... map," and this is certainly the case. It can be quite jarring going from one story to the other and finding oneself not only in a different world with different characters, but in a different time period, writing style, and genre. Once you've gotten over the initial jar, though, each of these stories is satisfying. There is a good deal here to be enjoyed, so go enjoy it, why don't you? *** ½

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive book ever written on the sacred aspects of indigenous, historical psychotropic and herbal healing beers of the world.
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting, some stupid.......2007-09-27
The author's axe has been ground down to a thin edge. The main faces of the blade are
1) Western medicine is bad and doesn't work
2) Plant medicine does largely because of some mystical "sacredness"
3) The same can be said for the Abrahamic religions and the ostensibly more authentic and "spiritual" traditions from anywhere else.
That's not my main beef with this book. It's downright dangerous. Many of the formulae are unknown quantities, and I'd be interested in trying them. Some of them are hazardous to your health like hensbane, mandrake root and jimsonweed. DO NOT TRY THESE RECIPES. YOU CAN END UP SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DEAD. There are others which won't kill you because you couldn't possibly choke down enough to hurt yourself. Any beer brewed from oak leaves and oak twigs will be indescribably bitter. One has to wonder where the guy came up with this.
This a great book. The Witch Doctor's Book of Recipies!.......2007-09-10
You want to know about basic brewing and some historical facts, this is the book. If fell in love with some of the recipies and did a little experimentation. Have fun by being a witch doctor!
If you already homebrew, this book may not be for you.......2007-06-27
Negatives: This book is not geared towards people who already know how to homebrew. The author uses very liberal definitions of what constitutes an "ale" and a "beer". Most of the "ale" and "beer" recipes range from 33% to 100% adjuncts, usually table sugar, molasses, and brown sugar. The author doesn't seem terribly concerned that high percentages of processed sugars in a wort create cidery and cloying off-flavors.
The recipes would be better if the user substituted honey for the processed sugars and made meads and braggots instead.
In addition, the author isn't terribly concerned with placing any kind of controls on the fermentation process. The author's argument is that +300 years ago, brewers didn't have the technology to control their fermentations and measure the gravities of their beers. Therefore the user of the book doesn't need to either. I would counter that argument with three points: 1) If they had the technology, they would have used it. Brewers readily accepted new technologies when they new it would enhance the quality of their beers. 2) Brewers only resisted technologies when they suspected it might adversely effect their beer's flavor. And even in those cases, they tinkered with the new technologies until they were able to replicate the desired beer flavor with it. 3) If you don't control your brewing and fermentation processes, you'll never be able to fully predict or duplicate your results.
Positives: This book has a lot of information on a lot of different herbs. If you are interested in making Metheglins (meads made with spices and herbs), Hydromels (low ABV meads), or Braggots (meads made with malt) you might get some good ideas for formulating your own recipes.
Good book.......2007-05-13
Very cool book if you like to find oout the old ways of brewing and see what they used for ingredients.
Interesting herbal healing book.......2006-09-04
This was exactly what I was looking for! He gives recipes for all kinds of fermented beverages, I hesitate to call them beers when most don't contain barley and are fermented with honey and other things, but the herbal lore is fabulous. I can't wait to try out some of the recipes!
I find it astounding how much the prohibition and Protestant reforms have affected our perception of history, that so many herbal remedies have been "cleaned up" meaning the original recipes of the fermented alcoholic drink have been changed to teas and tinctures which would be much weaker. Thank goodness there is someone like Buhner to do the detective work and find out all the real recipes before they are completely lost!
I believe this book completes the picture for Sally Fallon's "Nourishing Traditions" and Weston A. Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration".

No such things as bad Kitties!.......2006-05-06
I am the proud mother of three cats and two kids. Sometimes we all have problems living in sync with each other. This book let me know that there are many cat owners worse off than I am. All of the chapters were hilarious except for one. I wont say which one, but I cried for ten minutes after I read it. Everyone will really enjoy this treasure and it may tell you things about your kitties you never knew. According to the book, there are no such things as bad kitties, just miscommunications between kitties/owners.
I laughed, I cried.......2006-04-02
My husband got this book for me for Christmas and the next day I sat down and read the whole thing in one sitting. It is very engaging, and it gave me some insight into the zany behavior of my own two cats. Some of the stories were funny, some were sad but all were touching. I would highly reccomend this book for any cat lover.
Hiss and Tell: True Stories from the Files of a Cat Shrink.......2005-07-27
Excellent book, throughly enjoyed. The stories presented by Johnson-Bennett will make you laugh, even cry, and definately THINK! Reading these stories can give you insight in providing a more enriching homelife for your feline companion, maybe even tell you how your cat can tell you if your spouse cheating. This book is a page turner.
Laughed and cried.......2005-07-11
I had the best experience while reading this book - a purring cat curled up in my lap. I laughed at some of these stories, cried at others (especially the one about Angel). The book also reinforced for me how important it is to have interactive play sessions with your cat each day.
Excellent!.......2005-02-15
Hiss and Tell is a VERY entertaining book with 16 short stories about 16 different cats and their unusual troubles. Each story is approximately 5-10 pages long and draws you in quickly. I laughed, I cried, I loved this book from the moment I started it!!
There is Freddie, who helps his owner learn his wife is cheating on him. Cassie, who's story tore my heart out. Penelope, the paper shredder. Mambo King, who hates Sundays. Ralphie, who runs head-on into walls. And many more cats that will make you smile as you learn their unique story.
Pam Johnson-Bennett is a feline behaviorist who gets her referrals from veterinarians and makes house calls to her 'patients.' Considered one of the USA's experts on feline behavior, Pam operates her counseling practice in Tennessee. Her job consists of visiting the home, determining the cause of the problem, and setting up a behavior-modification plan for the family. She is the cat expert at ivillage.com and writes a monthly behavior column for Cats magazine. Pam is also the author of Think Like a Cat, Psycho Kitty, and Twisted Whiskers.
Within this book Pam states, "I love what I do for a living and wouldn't trade it for anything. (...) Every time a cat and his owner reach an understanding, it's worth everything to me." This shows you the love that went into the writing of this book and the touch of humor as well.
I highly recommend this book to all cat lovers! (Those who are not cat lovers would enjoy it too!) Ever cat lover's shelf should hold this book!

Not well organized and incomplete listing.......2006-11-13
I purchased this book specifically to look up the value of my 1991 limited edition porcelain bride and the porcelain collection wasn't even listed. This listing is not complete and poorly organized.
Useful reference for this niche collectable..........2000-05-27
This book is full of good information. It has lists of (seemingly) every Madame Alexander doll ever made. It has relatively accurate pricing (although be aware that online auctions often make such price guides irrelevant). My only quibble is that I wish it had many more pictures than it does, so as to make identifying dolls easier. Other than that, it's a fine book.
An important, seminal doll collector's guide........2000-04-06
Linda Crowsey's Madame Alexander appears in a pamphlet-style booklet which may be lost without spine lettering, but which provides an important, specific doll collector's guide to this series.
Book Description
Bring the world to your sewing machine! A sumptuously illustrated survey of traditional clothing from across the globe--plus timesaving, innovative techniques for making and decorating garments--will absolutely enchant stitchers. Throughout, images, from richly colored photographs to vintage postcards, capture people in their authentic dress (many of which have now disappeared). Before beginning an actual project, examine the basics of construction that appear again and again in ethnic attire: unconstructed rectangles, pullover cloaks or tunics, sleeved shifts, pull-on pants, full skirts with aprons, yoked shirts, short vests, and a front-opening coat. Embellish them, using some of the exquisite techniques that make these garments so breathtaking, from weaving and braiding to beading, painting, and embroidering. The highlight: six popular folkwear outfits with instructions on pattern making, marking, cutting out pieces, and putting it all together--a Seminole skirt, Moroccan burnoose, Syrian dress, Polish vest, Tibetan coat and Japanese Kimono.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful but the price is higher than the value.......2006-02-01
This is a lovely, lovely book, full of wonderful patterns and excellent information. But it's not worth over a hundred dollars unless you plan to use it on a daily basis. It's a good read and the pictures are inspiring but unless it's re-issued at a lower price I don't recommend buying it. (I do encourage the publisher to re-print, however, as I would happily have paid the original price for it.)
Beautiful but quirky.......2004-01-14
This is a beautiful book for costumers and fiber artists, packed with pictures and practical project information, but it is not without its flaws. The author does a fine job in describing the appearance and sometimes construction of modern era ethnic clothing, but this is not a history book. Many of her pictures are captioned, but very few are dated, though they all appear to be from the 20th century or perhaps the late 19th. Some of the uncaptioned pictures might be modern reproductions, but it's not clear in several cases. She makes a few comments about the evolution of fitted clothing with which I disagree. Additionally, she comments on the spiritual and talismanic nature of embellishment, which may or may not be her personal religious opinion, which I feel detracts from the presentation of the subject.
The strong points of the book are the pictures, most of which are clear and in color, except where the original was black and white. There are short embellishment projects which teach the reader methods of decorating the garments which are detailled in the second half of the book. The six clothing projects that are included are worth the price of the book alone, provided you are willing to scale up the diagrams.
Overall a good practical hands-on kind of book, if you take much of the commentary with a grain of salt.
Lovely overview; written for fiber artists........2002-08-16
I like this book very much. It offers a nice overview of traditional clothing found throughout many cultures, including brief discussions of common garment types (draped, sleeved shifts and tunics, gathered pants, etc), with plenty of old photographs that show how the garments were worn. I wish this part of the text also included line drawings of the garments for more clarity, such as the book, "Cut My Cote." Next is an overview of some common types of embellishment, such as resist dyeing, embroidery, and applique techniques. Some very interesting project ideas with patterns are offered, rated by skill level needed. The final section of the book offers patterns and detailed sewing instructions for garments: a kimono, a Polish vest, Tibetan panel coat, a Syrian dress and Moroccan burnoose--these will be familiar to owners of Folkwear's patterns. The book concludes with an excellent bibliography. Fiber artists, sewists, and costume makers will find plenty of useful material here. Very few books on ethnic costume provide information slanted toward duplicating and adapting techniques and garments--finally one that does! Note that you'll find this material weak if you need to do serious research on ethnic dress or are an experienced costumer or fiber artist.

Book Description
This volume principally deals with perceptions on Jews dating from the beginnings of their emancipation to the Dreyfus Affair. The title in French, and the original title of the colloquium in Hebrew, `Enlightened Antisemitism' not only reflects the overall anti-religious (anti-Christian and, hence, by necessity, anti-Jewish) sentiments of an Enlightenment figure such as Voltaire, but also refers to those who justified either their philosemitism or antisemitism with erudition: Johann David Michaelis, Antoine Guénée, Charles Maurras, etc. With France as its focal point, the volume also contains essays that treat various perceptions of Jews during the same period in England, Germany, and Italy. Interdisciplinary in nature, this collection of essays treats the Jewish question from historical, literary, and sociological angles.

The Musee D'Orsay in Paris, formerly a grand train station, houses one of the world's finest collections of 19th-century art. Opened as a museum in 1986, its constant flow of traffic is a testament to a worldwide love affair with impressionist art. While the museum contains an extensive collection of drawings, sculpture, decorative arts, architecture, and photography from 1848-1914, its true pride is its collection of paintings. Flip through pages of work by some of history's most celebrated artists: Ingres, Delacroix, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Rodin, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec. While the bulk of the 240 color illustrations are devoted to paintings, a fine selection of the museum's entire collection is reproduced here.

We just returned from Musee D'Orsay. The book was very expensive at the museum and would have cost more to ship. The price was great. The book is new, large colorful pictures highlighting the best of one of my favorite museums in Paris!
A DANDY COFFEE TABLE BOOK....(the HARDBACK, not the Tiny Folio series).......2006-04-19
This fantastic book is about the eminent museum in Paris that is situated on the left bank of the famous Seine. It holds mainly French art from 1848 to 1914. It has one of the leading collections of Impressionist art in the world. This book is to be read and savored by people who love France, awesome works of art, impressionism or who love the splendid D'Orsay museum. Everytime I read it, I have happy memories.
I had the most marvelous good fortune to spend a day at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris several months ago. It is such a magnificent place with wonderful sculptures and works of art. And naturally, me being me, I took hundreds of photos. And again, me being me, I needed to identify all the pictures when I got home which was difficult because, coupled with pictures from the Lourve and the British Museum, I had to identify well over 750 snapshots. That's when the Treasures of the Musee D'Orsay came in handy. Besides being a dandy coffee table book, it is chock full of photos from the museum's lovely pieces of art.
We learn that the ground floor corresponds to the Second Empire in France with sculptures ranging from 1848 to 1870's. We also learn about and can view the masterpieces of the 1870's...Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet and Cezanne all have displays. The museum's other popular areas hold work by: Vincent van Gogh, Gaugin, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec. We also see Rodin, Munch, Mollard, and even "The Artist's Mother" (Arrangement in Grey and Black) by Whistler as shown in this book along with scores of other paintings. Now, if I will only take time to work on my slide show now that I have names to go with these works of art!
Just a collection of prints.......2004-07-11
This book is ok if you want a collection of prints of about 240 art objects. It is useless otherwise, specially if you are a beginner, because there is no commentary with any of the prints.
Each section begins with a short commentary - and that's all. For example, one section for Manet, Degas, Whistler, Latour, Monet, Morisot, Pissaro, Renoir, Sisley, Cezanne, etc has just a single page of commentary for 43 paintings!!
Treasures of the Musée DýOrsay.......2003-10-31
For many of us a trip to one of the greatest museums in the world, Musée D'Orsay in Paris, can prove to be mindboggling. We are not only overwhelmed with the magnificent art that is on display but we never seem to have enough time or energy to view a fraction of these great artistic contributions to mankind.
Treasures of the Musée D'Orsay, authored by former director of the Musée Françoise Cachin, is one solution to resolve our dilemma in planning a meaningful visit to this great institution.
The author in her introduction introduces us to the most important artworks of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist eras.
While we take this journey, we are also made aware of the fact that the museum was a train station and a hotel that were classified as historical monuments in Paris, and as a result were spared demolition.
The museum houses the works of artists born between 1820 and 1870, with some exceptions. It is also explained to us that the Musée d'Orsay, insofar as its paintings are concerned, is to be placed between the Louvre, which houses artworks before 1820, and the Beaubourg Museum, which prides itself with works, executed after 1870.
What is interesting about the book is that the author gives us a detailed tour of the museum and this is what will make an ultimate tour to this great institution invaluable.
Cachin leads us by the hand from one section of the museum to another where we discover realism on the first floor; the Ingrism and Romanticism as well as social scenes by Daumier and highlights of Manet, Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Cezanne in the upper gallery; awesome statute surrounded by a steel architecture in the middle floor; and Winslow Homer and other foreign artists in the esplanade.
Another vital aspect about this beautiful book is that the co-author, Xavier Carrère, presents background information and concise essays pertaining to each and every one of the periods.
It is also breathtaking to view the many photographs of just about every aspect of the museum's collection-oil paintings; sculpture, decorative arts, pastels, drawings and watercolors, architecture and photography that are all well represented in the book.
What is also noteworthy is that the volume contains several works that may not even be on display when you personally visit the Musée as they are constantly being rotated in order to preserve them.
Francoise Cachin and Xavier Carrère have reached their goal of preserving vivid memoirs of the quality and variety of works seen at the Musee d'Orsay.
They have also provided the reader with an extensive index that will facilitate the viewing of a work of art within the book as well as in person at the Musée.
If you want to save steps and enjoy the Musée, read this book before visiting.

An excellent companion or inspiration (if you haven't been).......2001-06-24
as with most guides, the best give you an understanding of context as well as information on what you're seeing. after a recent visit to the museum, with my head full of memories of the arresting paintings i'd just seen, i picked up this book as a memento. while it doesn't fully take me back (after all, what guide can transport you to the roof, overlooking the seine river and the louvre?), it does help you recall the wonderful memories of days spent wandering the halls.
the book doesn't catalouge the entire museum and some of my favorites weren't in there, but it does have an incredible selection of art. additionally, the commentary is well written and accessable. most importantly, they've thoughtfully put in several sidebars that help you understand the art scene in paris at the time - making the paintings much more relevant.
definitely one of the better museum guides i've seen. reproduction quality is quite good as well. i've shared it with several friends who haven't been and now they're clamoring to go.

ONCE A TRAIN STATION NOW A MUSEUM.......2004-04-21
A Paris train station that has been transformed into one of the most highly regarded museums in the world houses an impressive collection of nineteenth century art. Cezanne, Monet, Tissot, Millet, Courbet, all are represented in what is now a palace of fine arts.
This compact volume (4" by 6") presents many of the museums riches - paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and photographs.
The introduction recounts the transformation of the train station and how the collection was acquired.
Book Description
"In Osorno, Chile, the Nazis were the great feudal lords of the south and being Jewish was like possessing a savage and dangerous scar." The author thus describes the backdrop for this memoir of growing up as the daughter of European Jewish immigrants to Chile in the years before and after World War II. Speaking through the voice of her mother, she says, "I write these sometimes intermittent and true memories with the voice of an adolescent and then of a woman. . . . I wish to talk about my life in an unseemly and noisy house in southern Chile and about a town with fifty Nazis and three Jewish families. Everything I tell you is true and this is why I write so that it will be even more certain."
This beautifully written story offers glimpses of cultures and landscapes little known outside Chile. The narrative weaves back and forth through time offering the stories of the narrator's family: her father, who had to leave Vienna around 1920 because he fell in love with a Christian cabaret dancer, her paternal grandmother, who came to Chile in 1939 with a number tattooed on her arm, her mother's family from Odessa, and numerous aunts and uncles. The narrator returns to Osorno in 1993 and notes how little has changed. The Germans still display portraits of Hitler in their homes and sell Hitler memorabilia.

Poets seem to have a knack with memoir. There's alreadysomething very baring about much contemporary poetry that is similarto what many memorably brave and direct memoirs possess. There's also something even more immediate about translation. Works translatedinto English often have a stunning directness, which can owe itself tothe difficulty of effectively bringing the idioms and cadence ofanother language into our own. These tendencies, like any elements ofwriting, can be effective and they can also be overused. InMarjorieAgosin's A CROSS AND A STAR: MEMOIRS OF A JEWISH GIRL INCHILIE, they are both. Luckily, the effectiveness of the writing outweighs the repetitiveness of certain phrases and elements. The brevity of the book, 179 pages which include 30 pages of photographs, serves it well. Agosin is writing in the voice of her mother, so the book becomes a sort of autobiography by association, and as such the stories are simple and powerful. If the book had been any longer, the simplicity of its thematic basis, and the overly-direct style of the translated prose, would have begun working against it. As it is, the collection effectively evokes the beauty and wonder of Chile, the destructive power of hatred in the lives of one family, and the power of people who choose to help, rather than hurt, each other. The tales in the collection span decades, and many have survived only due to oral storytelling traditions by which Agosin's predecessors maintained their connections with each other even in the face of the overwhelming tragedies of the Holocaust. Most evocative are thestories dealing with specifics of lives torn apart by having to leaveeverything behind in order to avoid being taken to concentrationcamps; the details of these stories, the choices made by theseindividuals, are compelling. Agosin's accounts, too, of the mixture ofbeauty, fear, peace and isolation that came from living at thesouthern tip of the world amidst Nazis and natives is fascinating. Theonly places where the narrative falters is in the repetition ofaccounts of verbal abuse which the Agosin's mother endured. Thereare only so many times you can be told that she was called "dirtyJew" or "Christ killer" before those moments have lost their power amid the lush prose and captivating details. One of the most striking aspects of the memoir is the way in which it seems to flow back and forth between pure realism and a kind of "Magic Realism." This is in keeping with the events of the book, taking place at the bottom of the world, as well as the ways in which people can alter their perceptions of reality to deal with incredible adversity. Since the narrator is recalling childhood for the bulk of the book, simple desires are often stated with great grandeur, such as Agosin's mother's wish for the beauty and safety of a Catholic guardian angel. Much of the narrative's power comes from the unaffected wants and needs of a girl growing-up surrounded by a mixture of overwhelming hatred and beauty, societal spurning and familial love. It is a mixture that works well. This book is an effective, and highly readable collection of survival tales that sing of natural beauty and spiritual strength, of the wonder of children and the resolve of adults, and of the incredible value of memory and language.
