Great Book.......2006-04-11
Great book - women taking care of themselves with swords and other weapons. Good book in the seriesx. I have them all.
Yes! They have a Starhawk story!.......2000-08-02
I loved almost all the stories in this anthology. However, I especially enjoyed the return of Barbara Hambly's wonderfully complex ex-nun-turned-mercenary Starhawk (of "The Unschooled Wizard" and "The Dark Hand of Magic" fame)
"A Night with the Ladies" proves that the 'Hawk doesn't need her wizardly boyfriend Sun Wolf backing her up--although a few gal-pals don't go unappreciated...
funfunfunfunfunfun!!!!!!.......1999-04-08
I loved this book! It completely blew just about every stereotype against women out of the water. While I was reading it, I constantly chuckled to myself, and occasionally laughed out loud, hard enough to bring tears to my eyes! I've never read the first book in the series, but I always wanted to, and now I do more than ever!!!!
Thank you, Esther, for another great anthology!.......1998-05-12
As a fan of the warrior woman genre and the humor fantasy genre, I absolutely loved this book! Reading it along with the first one made for a great afternoon, especially since one author chose to write a continuation of her first story (Elizabeth Moon, write more of this stuff, please!). The dedication made me laugh out loud and immediately head to my e-mail to spread the fun.
You can't quite get the title right in plaintext........1998-04-24
Well, it's a followup to 'Chicks in Chainmail', I'm sure that everyone figured that out already. It's not quite as sublime as some of the first, but it's entirely readable and fun. It when it goes into those court ladies, well, ok, I laughed hard enough to get the spouse to grab the book (and start laughing herself).
Fun.

Book Description
"At last we get Paul Levinson's superb forensic sleuth, Phil D'Amato, in a full-length novel. If you know Phil from his previous appearances, I need say no more. If you don't, kick back and enjoy a mystery that spans the ages," said Jack McDevitt of The Silk Code, the first Phil D'Amato novel. Now, D'Amato, hero of a number of stories published in Analog, is back. The Consciousness Plague is about memory -- more particularly, how the loss of memory, in slivers of time deducted from a growing number of individuals, can subtly undermine and play havoc with everything from the investigation of serial stranglings to candlelight dinners. Dr. D'Amato, NYPD forensic detective, investigates a spate of unusual cases of memory loss and finds evidence of a bacteria-like organism that has lived in our brains since our origin as a species and may be responsible for our very consciousness. There's evidence for this consciousness bug in the ancient Phoenician and Viking cultures and everywhere he looks in our world. A new antibiotic crosses the blood-brain barrier and inadvertently kills this essential bug. Phil himself is a victim of the memory drain, and must struggle to get the proper authorities to pay attention before everyone loses so much memory that they forget that they forgot in the first place.
Customer Reviews:
A promising premise buried under pedestrian prose.......2004-07-26
I really wanted to like this book. Paul Levinson's novel promised great things: 1) it has an intriguing premise 2)I've liked mixed genres books before 3)The setting and science is interesting. Unfortunately, Levinson's book fails to take off the way I had hoped. The characters seem as if they've been pulled from mediocre mystery movies. The dialogue comes across as second rate Hammett or Chandler. The narrative too many coincidences. It seems ready made for a sale to Hollywood.
The novel has some redeeming factors. Levinson has the core of a fascinating character in Phil D'Amato. His fascinating story idea needs more narrative development but comes across pretty well. The science seemed pretty valid if a bit far fetched. I haven't read any of Levinson's other novels or short stories so can't comment on how this compares to his other stuff but he does show promise as a writer.
The major flaw with The Consciousness Plague is that it comes across as a treatment for a science fiction movie but one that might be a Sci-Fi original program with a limited budget and scope. Levinson's editor David Hartwell should have worked with the author at refashioning the novel and fleshing out the characters. It also would have helped to reduce the coincidences that crop up throughout the book and the easy narrative breadcrumbs that lead Levinson along the way to his conclusion.
A lovely little book.......2004-04-13
This is the first book I've read by this author and it's a sequel, although this didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book. The first half or more is a nice combination of SF with modern police procedural. As the book progresses, though, the writer seems to lose an idea of where to go (and to some extent he's painted himself into a corner).
I liked the forgetfulness problem, although frankly Phil Dick has done this far better (FAR more frighteningly and effectively) in books like Ubik (if you like this one, Ubik will blow your doors off). Still, for a little novel, I enjoyed it, read it in about two sittings.
I agree with much of the criticism in other reviews here, but can't be too hard on the book. The writing is reasonably well crafted, if methodical, and I enjoyed it, even if suspending disbelief got harder at the book progressed.
Starts well, goes off track.......2004-02-01
This mystery has an interesting scientific premise: a medication is killing bacteria that enable the brain to remember. The characters start having memory lapses, blanks in their recollections of conversations and other events, including deaths that may be murders. The premise could have been developed as a science fiction idea with vast implications. Unfortunately, the novel evolves into an increasingly conventional detective story, and the memory loss issue fades until it seems like an afterthought. This may be a case in which mixing two genres in one book did not work.
by the numbers.......2003-10-28
In addition to his seeming clumsiness with words, this is
modern science fiction by a white, middle aged writer who
is now using the standard template of comtemporary SF by PC
science fiction writers. As Sawyer did, in his travesty 'hominoids', these aging white writers seem to be transfixed with inter-racial sex between a black male
and a very young white woman, and let the story wander all over
the place, with dead dialogue, idiotic plots - somehow hoping,
perhaps, that the Mandingo Sex in the book will save it.
Big Clue: - it doesn't. Just as in Sawyers most recent still-birth, this book just sucks outright and even the sex can't save it. No sense of wonder, no sense of awe, nothing. Now you
know why Arthur C. Clarke and Asimov and Reynolds did not have to stoop to the shuck and jive sex routines - they didn't need them -they wrote the poetry of the future. Levinson, if you
need a sexual fantasy - please, please keep it private.
Writing Plague.......2003-08-19
The science was credible enough to sustain the story. The writing wasn't. Ham-handed exposition and dialogue that belies a tin ear for conversation are just two of the things that made this a weary-making slog.

From the author of "The Silk Code, winner of the 1999 Locus Award for Best First Novel, comes another intriguing blend of science fiction and hard-boiled police procedural mystery. In "The Consciousness Plague," forensic detective Phil D'Amato returns to investigate a spate of unusual cases of memory loss and discovers evidence of an organism that's lived in our brains since the beginning of humanity - and may be responsible for our very consciousness in the first place. Phil himself is a victim of the memory drain, and must struggle to get the proper authorities to pay attention before everyone loses so much memory that they forget that they forgot in the first place. REVIEWS: "Levinson handles myth, history, science, and police procedures with equal skill, earning high marks for intelligence and originality in the process." - Booklist. "The plot is really quite intriguing, and pulled in credible ideas from a number of fields such as Cognitive Anthropology... Mark Shanahan does different voices for over a dozen characters. He actually has the perfect voice for a New York forensic detective." - SFFAudio.

Very Good Book About Coffee.......2007-07-05
I love coffee. I especially love good coffee. This book taught me a lot about how to select and brew good coffee. It is a great resource that I go to often when I want to know the answer to questions such as "what is the difference between a cappacino and a latte?"
This book probably has more information about coffee than most people need, but for coffee geeks it is essential.

This is a great book covers everything you need to know about roasting and enjoying coffee. Easy to read and full of interesting information.
Easy read .......2006-02-25
The dark brown writing is not an issue unless you already have severe vision problems. Whatever you do don't let that stop you from getting this book (I almost did). It will help you to enjoy that first cup of the day so much more...
Coffee Overview.......2005-08-20
I currently work for a small specialty coffee roaster in Spokane, Washington and was recommended this book by our Roastmaster. It is an excellent overview of the entire coffee process. I highly recommend it to anyone starting in the coffee industry or if you have any interest in coffee what-so-ever.
good book for coffee lovers.......2005-08-10
Well organized information about coffee, preparation and pure enjoyment. This would make a great coffee table book! It's written without pretense or snobbishness. After reading the book, I was able to make more informed decisions about the coffees I purchased and how I prepared them.
Book Description
OK. You're dog doesn't live to please you. There, we've said it. Contrary to what you've always heard, not all dogs want to earn their owner's approval. Sometimes they seem as if they could not care less. But this is no secret to you -- you know your dog's not Lassie.
With this book you will come to understand and appreciate that for hundreds of years dogs were bred for qualities like independence, dominance and determination. While these traits make dogs excellent hunters, trackers and fighters, they can make day-to-day living with your pet a real challenge.
Betty Fisher and Suzanne Delzio will teach you how to employ or overcome the traits that make your dog difficult to train. They will show how to use body language, food, voice, training structure and style to convince your stubborn dog to do what you ask. Without force, you can turn your difficult dog into a perfect pet, or even a successful show dog.
Customer Reviews:
So Your Dog's Not Lassie: Tips for Training Difficult Dogs and Independent Breeds.......2007-03-15
I enjoyed reading this book about how to train the independent, lovable dogs that many owners own, and then come to my obedience class bewildered and frustrated on how to train to do even basic obedience commands. This book emphasized how to positively train dogs of any breed or temperment.
This was an easy read and not so much about theory about dog behavior, just great tips on how to get your dogs to be the great dog that you want them to be for everyday life and competition.
Best book for the dog with her own agenda!.......2006-01-17
This is a great book. I have several dogs, and the techniques for training work on them all. However, it is great for my independent pup, a Dogue de Bordeaux.
She was always interested in something else, shutting down when she had enough. Which she will still do, but now I have a way to impart information in a manner she learns while still keeping training sessions short enough to keep her interest!
Great book for all breeds.......2005-07-27
This book focuses mainly on very independent or dominant dogs. However, the methods shown can be used with all dogs. The main idea throughout the book is that the biggest reason for a lack of success is a lack of leadership on the owner's part. Dogs who don't respect you as alpha, or leader, will not follow through on commands or behave in an especially polite manner. He thinks he's the boss, so really you ought to be listening to him.
One thing I really liked about this book was that the author used her own bulldogs as examples. I know from experience that bulldogs are sweet, but difficult to train. If she can earn titles on a bulldog using these methods, I have faith it will work for my dog (a Cane Corso).
The first few chapters cover dog behavior, equipment & logistics, becoming alpha of your "pack", body language, rewards, and treats. Chapters 7-13 cover various specific exercises: attention, sit, down, stand, etc. They are all very in depth, discussing why the behavior is useful and how it can be used in the real world. She also goes over exactly how to teach your dog the exercise, the steps to having the end result (ex. basic heeling to competition level heeling), and some common problems you might encounter. The last chapter covers competition and how to get the best performance out of your dog.
The only thing I didn't like about the book was the high reliance on food and bait. She does cover other methods of rewarding and how to develop a reward system, but throughout the book she relies on food extensively for nearly all of the exercises.
Overall this is a great book for all breeds, but especially those who like to push the envelope or take charge. This book is not intended for dealing with aggressive dogs, but it will help immensely if you have a dominant dog.
Worth the money.......2003-08-12
The book had a lot of extremly useful information in it. You get a really good understanding on not only the bulldog breed but any smart independant breed. There are numerous tips on how to begin training your dog the basics like sitting, down, stay, heeling and walking on a leash. It's got a lot of good advice on how to overcome some of the alpha dominance problems you tend to have with dominant independant breeds. I wished the book would have had more information on puppy training though. A good part of the book had info you could use on any age dog but it didn't deal with the problems owners have with young pups. The books discusses how independant breeds need positive reinforcement to behave properly. The book just didn't address what to do or how to handle the difficult situations that come up with these dogs on a day to day. All in all it was very worth the money and I'm glad I have it.
Well done attempt to explain training process.......2003-04-27
Here in the Los Angeles area of California, about 20 twenty trainers get together once a month to discuss training, help one another solve problems and to discuss a book read during the previous month.
One trainer, who specializes in classes and behavior problem solving in large and other independent breeds, such as Mastiffs, said it is the best of the big dog books; easy to read, and has found that her clients do read it and that it speaks to the owners of these dogs.
The particular challenge of dog training books is to describe a physical skill, like dancing, with the added difficulty of a non-human partner. In addition, authors often try to get some basic learning theory across to explain why or how a particular exercise is done and to give some idea of the training from the dog's point of view.
The book successfully meets this challenge for the most part. The writing is clear, and the layout is easy to follow; with "Novice Notes" through out which give personal diary-like observations of the training process. The pictures are good, some of the best I have seen, when showing owners where to place their hands to get the dog into position and, importantly, the effect on the dog when the hands are misplaced. Footwork is succinctly shown with pictures that show the right and wrong positions and how they influence the dog to position itself.
The authors give a variety of approaches, not really coming down in one camp, and they include material not found in other books.
Written in 1998, when many trainers were discovering learning theory, working out how to implement the theory in classes and how to present it to dog owners, the authors advocate the idea of "jack-pot" rewards for a really well done performance, and urge owners, when training, to adopt an intermittent reinforcement schedule. However, the consensus, at least within this group, is to not use intermittent reinforcement schedules (in other words: reward every time) and that a "jack-pot" reward may make the owner feel good, but it doesn't have much influence on the animal's learning.
This book met with approval by the group in general. Many members of the group said they would recommend it to their clients.

Superb Drawings.......2007-01-24
Myself and many of my contemporaries at Disney animation back in the late 1970s and 80s used to fawn over the one copy that the Library had of this book (which was well worn by the generation that preceded us). It's great that this and other books about Gordon Grant are now being reproduced. For anyone who loves to draw and sketch this is a great resource. Mister Grant's economy of line, mastery of pen and ink and dynamic interpretation of human figures and ships at sea are graphic history of days gone by.

Great, fresh ideas, and great instructions for beginners!.......2005-05-06
Okay, I am relatively new to the quilting scene and in the process of this exciting new hobby, I have accumulated a lot of quilting books. I'm not real interested in the "block" designs and applique seems to appeal to me more. This book has wonderful, fresh, cottage look and feel designs and the applique designs of course can be interchanged. I just used the applique design and kind of winged a border and it turned out awesome! The color schemes are like I said, fresh! However what made this book a "keeper" in my eyes is the instructions for binding. I had a friend show me the ropes when it came to binding, but I remained freaked out and dreaded this final step. Every quilt book I get I instantly check out the binding directions to see if, along with my friends instructions, will make it all seem less daunting. Well, these are the BEST instructions I've found. I have actually recommended this book for some other beginner quilter, if only for the binding instructions. Great book and like I said, A KEEPER FOR A QUILT BOOK COLLECTION!

Book Description
Sea-steading is a unique book. Perhaps more clearly than any other book ever published, Sea-steading goes directly to the core of why some people sail, and why some people would choose to make the sea their home. Filled with theoretical inquiry as well as practical tips, Sea-steading provides the reader with a wealth of information.
From sailing techniques, boat maintenance skills, financial savvy, and forage foodseven how to construct a green, self-sufficient ocean going home and see the world; it's all here!
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-09-04
The author is exquisitely sane, and far from being rants or asides, the philosophical underpinnings are sound and very much in context. Even though my boat has a diesel auxiliary and lots of interconnected systems, this book has strengthened my resolve to save the iron genny for true emergencies and work to develop the skills of self reliance under sail.
The long out-of-print "Sailing the Farm" is another good reference for aquatic self-sufficiency, but Sea-Steading is more focused on developing competent sailing skills. There is a wealth of good knowledge here, and the writing is full of gems (even though, as he readily admits, it could have used a bit of copy-editing). I've already quoted the author twice and referred back to a passage once, and it has only been two days since I spent a very satisfying Saturday immersed in the book.
I highly recommended this for those who understand its intent. Jerome truly knows his stuff, and makes a very good case for casting off from the consumer lifestyle... not just adding a yacht to one's stable of toys. And even if you don't care about the broader philosophical context, the knowledge herein might keep you off a lee shore some dark and stormy night.
This one's a keeper.
Way too preachy.......2007-08-03
If you like being preached at, this is the book for you. FitzGerald is an atheist and I'm not, but that's not the issue. The issue for me is that he presents the basic fundamentalist position: "If you don't agree with me you're an idiot." And presents it. And presents it again. And some more. OK, I got your point, move on. He can't. I don't like it from people I ostensibly agree with, and I don't like it from people I disagree with either.
Somewhere in here there is some information about sailing, but even that is continally interrupted by his self-titled "Diatribes," and is strongly based on the "My way or the highway" view of living.
He's as fundamentalist about his boats and his ways as he is about his fundamentalist non-religion.
If FitzGerald's chosen life is making him happy you can't tell it by reading his book. If you want to get anything out of the book you'll have to be willing to wade through a lot of opinionated wastepaper.
I had high hopes, and he could have fulfilled them. We agree about many things. I was severely disappointed.
Sail Without an Engine.......2007-04-04
While peppering the book with philosophical tidbits, the author imparts his immense knowledge about sailing. Every sailor should read this.
Some good info, but..........2007-03-22
This is the first book that I have read from this author. I enjoyed the book, but was left with the feeling that my time spent reading was for a relatively little gain. That is my reasoning for a score of three instead of four stars. The author is knowledgable and has the ability to share it, but I felt that he was just "dribbling" the good stuff out, while I dutifully followed. Your are forewarned by the author, and by me, that the reader will need to slog through his philosophical "rants". I didn't mind it to much, it was interesting, and thought provoking at times. I believe this author has much authentic knowledge to share on sailing, I will consider his other books.
No book has ever been more in need of an Editor.......2007-03-09
Jerome FitzGerald is knowledeable, even expert, at describing his practical methods of sailing without an engine. Any sailor will benefit from reading the book beginning at Chapter 7. This book should be required reading for everyone seeking a license to teach sailing or to run a marina. With the right Editor this book would appeal to a very large audience.
However, Jerome FitzGerald's book, like its author, has problems. Captain FitzGerald has lived the life, somewhat successfully, that more timid souls only imagine. He is free from the consumer society. As a rugged individualist, he will always do well in times of crisis. But, anyone who finds an alcohol making still aboard ship to be more important than a diesel auxiliary probably has a drinking problem. Indeed, the book is peppered with examples of conflicts with authorities and other sailors, similar to the life of the quarrelsome land based alcoholic. The author hasn't figured out that the Marina owners prefer the twice a year sailor who has to buy all new rigging for his boat for every outing, as long as his checks arrive in a timely manner. The operators of the ship's stores would all go broke if their customers were as resourceful as Mr. FitzGeral describes himself to be.
BUY THE BOOK. LEARN EVERYTHING HE HAS TO SAY ABOUT SAILING. IGNORE HIS ALCOHOLIC RANTS.

Countdown to Millennium
ASIN: 1850280959 |
Book Description
His artwork has graced the timeless novels of Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), H.G. Wells (War of the Worlds), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Lost World), J.R.R. Tolkien (The Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings), and Frank Herbert (Dune). But whether he's illustrating a children's classic like Alice in Wonderland, a magazine, an album sleeve, or a poster, Rodney Matthews' images explode with fantasy and even joy. Few dark visions appear here; instead there are color, movement, and a host of eccentric, whimsical, and personality-filled figures to please the eye. The richly detailed paintings and preliminary sketches gathered here include The Hop, featuring an irresistible group of jazzy musical insects; the subtly glowing book cover for C.S. Lewis's The Silver Chair; and the fanciful, slightly disturbing The Spud Snuzzler--which pictures a bizarre creature who shoots high-velocity potatoes through his trumpetlike nose. 136 pages (all in color), 10 3/4 x 11. An Excellent Illustrative Book.......2006-11-02
The first time I was introduced to the art of Rodney Matthew's was in 1994 with the book, "Last Ship Home". It didn't take long for me to rush and pick up "In Search of Forever", "Countdown to Millennium", his portfolio collections and a host of other books featuring him!
What becomes apparent upon "feasting" our eyes on his captivating illustrations is the creative genius behind them. The surreal and fantasy-like nuances that he infuses the most mundane objects with transport us into a magical realm. Here, common animals are inspiration for exotic beasts (a 4 winged eagle, a 4 eyed elephant or even a saxophone toting grasshopper!) and classic fantasy novel settings ("Alice in Wonderland", "Middle Earth" or "Camelot") are imbued with epic breathtaking qualities that invite you to go on an adventure as you flip through the pages. His employment of color is superb and the level of intricacy is simply mind boggling.
Rodney Matthews has done for the art world what Peter Packson's "Lord of The Rings" did for Hollywood; to bring the fantasy genre into the forefront of people's minds, young and adult alike. He, along with a select few panel of artists (Patrick Woodroffe, Boris Vallejo, etc.) form the core of the movement to bring the psychadellic inspirations of the 70's into the 21st century's mainstream creative consciousness.
If you are someone who likes all things fantasy-related, this book is definitely a keeper. When I feel bored and uninspired, I just have to open one of his books and feel immediately transported away into another world! My wish is for him to collaborate with J.K. Rowling for the Harry Potter series sometime in the near future; that would be the day!
This book is exceptional.......1999-11-22
I bought this book a long time ago. I have yet to tire from it. Rodney Matthews is one of the best Fantasy artists around, and has also done work for musicians as well as magazenes and books. The work this book hold vary from people like Sir Arthur Conan Doile, H.G. Wells, J.R.R. Tolken, and many many more. It's too bad it's out of print, or I would recomend it to anyone vaguly intrested in Fantasy art.

Good job.......2006-03-18
This was a very uplifting and positive reading. I own it and my 9 year old was surprised by it. We read it together.
I agree a nice coffee table addition!
Shame on Essence! Featuring Halle Berry as a role model :(.......2005-02-15
Black History Month - Feb., 2005. Black parents, more than ever, need to be careful about the choice of role models for their black children. If you take a look at the prominent themes in many black music videos and movies -- you will notice a gradual glorification of the Ho, Pimp and Thug theme for young black kids. Take a look at any 7 out of 10 music videos and you will see black women loosely dressed to seduce men. Take a look at 7 out of 10 music videos and you will notice the black men portrayed at pimps and thugs. The sorry part is that in real life there are too many black men in prison and young black girls getting pregnant at an early age; and all of this contributes to the high school drop out rate and aids. Too much sex and crime glorified in black music videos and movies. And now Hollywood gives it top award to the Queen Black Ho -- Halle Berry. What kind of role model is that? Based purely on good looks and a golden idol (Oscar); but look at how she had to debase and degrade herself to get it. Okay young black girls, have sex with Billy Bob and you can be successful like me? What stupid values to pass along to our kids. All of this means a black kid does not have a snowball chance of hell of surviving with idiotic role models like Halle, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent. As though dealing with racism in this country was not bad enough, black kids are now being fed a steady diet of negative role models and entertainment that guarantee that they will be losers. Instead of glorifying the non-role models like Halle, Snoop and 50cent, Black people need to BOYCOTT them. All they do is encourage negative behavior, such as being a ho, being a pimp and being a thug. At what point does Essence magazine suggest that young black girls watch Monster's Ball? Just because someone gave her an Oscar (that should have gone to Lena Horne years ago); black people think that it is okay to accept porn for the 1st Oscar given to a black woman. The first white woman to get an Oscar did not have to get naked and have sex -- but the first black woman did. By the way, Hollywood has not given an Oscar to any White woman having down and dirty sex with a black man; but because black women and girls were raped by white men for years during slavery, I guess we are thought of as being "less" so it is okay to give a black woman an award for having down and dirty sex with a white man (just like those good ole slavery days). I think that Essence is owned by a white person, but black people should be smart enough to just say "no" to this gradual emphasis on a Slave Mentality pushed by people who are just in it for the money, but don't have to worry about having their kids fall prey to the same negative stuff that they put out in the world. Let's give our kids something better and encourage education and self respect, rather than putting people like Halle Berry on a platter, when all she did was give good sex to Billy Bob!
pretty picture book.......2002-11-18
Essence has come up with a very attractive coffe table book. The photos are lovely and the profiles/commentary is pleasant and non demanding. If you are serious collector of books on black culture you can safely skip this one but if you just want a pretty picture book then this is a nice addition.
