A new fan is born!.......2004-12-02
When I opened The Watermark, I wasn't sure what to expect. But from page one, I was intriqued...even hooked. Thrasher's thoughtful tale about forgiveness and second chances is a story for anyone who has lived, loved, lost, or made a terrible mistake. Covenant College and the surrounding Chicago settings lent authenticity to the work, since the author hails from that city. The concerns of college life as Sheridan and Genevie are readying themselves to move out into the world, their conversations, etc., feel real...as do Erik's season within the party scene.
It wasn't until Sheridan revealed the truth about Amy to Genevie that I also discovered it; Travis's ability to expose the mystery surrounding Sheridan's past was masterful. I learned enough to keep me flipping those pages and then had to discipline myself to keep from peeking in the final chapter. It was worth the wait. The story unfolded beautifully, giving the reader a wonderful, if sometimes bumpy, journey alongside Sheridan to healing.
If you are looking for a book with a haunting voice, compelling story, and nuggets of truth throughout, try The Watermark. It is a great read!
Not afraid to write about real life!.......2004-09-21
This book is funny and serious at the same time! He makes you believe the characters and he is not afraid to write about real life issues. It is a good read.
Sweet without syrup.......2003-09-12
Some might find a male romance writer a little odd, but the jests will fade when they read this book. As a male reader, I was surprised how drawn in I was by the characters' story. These are real people with real emotions, the sort you squeeze past at the coffee shop, not the sort that wear hoop earrings while riding horses bare-backed across the cover of more "die-hard" romantic fiction. I found myself rooting for Sheldon to take the risky step of moving from living in his head to involving himself in the lives of others. Intelligent, believable, touching even, and altogether enjoyable.

Here are images of our culture's absurdities, injustices, violence and desires, shot at you in a machine-gun-like assault on your senses and intellect. The result is hilarious, chilling and irrevocably mind-altering --- a left-brain/right-brain challenge ... a consciousness-raising experience filled with laughter, rage --- and truth.

i read this book one night and when i went to bed i must have laughed myself to sleep!!
this book is a recommended cure for apathy
"Popeye appears to have served as Pope or President...".......2007-06-28
This is perhaps the first book I have ever read where the introduction was better than the book as a whole.
The first nine pages are pure genius - an alien archaeologist unearths an ancient script from the 20th Century. His introduction is priceless.
The remainder of the book, the script itself, is creative but is really just a compendium of things RAW has said before in other books. Because of the conceit of the script he is working within, he usually says it better where it first appeared. Also, it is a product of its time - 1992 - and the timely nature of his political quips (Quayle) seem dated even now.
Discordians and Subgenii will definitely want to find this book, as both religions are repeatedly mentioned and illustrated.
Sorry, But It Just Didn't Do It For Me.......2004-08-23
First of all, I've read some of RAW's other work and have enjoyed it immensely. So it was with enthusiasm that I purchased "Reality Is What You Can Get Away With," particularly after seeing the glowing Amazon.com reviews. However, I was disappointed with this book in general. Oh sure, it had humor in a kind of over the top sort of way (although I know that RAW strived for more than humor in the book). But I didn't find that it tremendously "expanded my reality." Maybe that's because I've been in the "human potential," and "freedom" movements for decades. So what RAW writes in "Reality" was not all that shocking, mindblowing or new to me. The book is actually written as a screenplay and perhaps would translate better into the video, rather than the written, medium.
One more thing: based on the reviews of RAW's work I had expected him to be as libertarian as you could find. But there is a passage in "Reality," where he tosses insults at the U.S. because, among other things, it doesn't have a "national health plan." How could anyone who has even the slightest knowledge of economics, society and reality in general really believe that establishing a "national health plan" would, rather than destroying a large part of any economy (as Medicare & Medicaid have already done), bring a slice of utopia into society?
THIS BOOK RULES.......2004-08-22
I love this book... it is one of my favorite R.A.W. books.... though i will now need to read Schrodinger's Cat Trilogy : "The Universe Next Door", "The Trick Top Hat", & "The Homing Pigeons" but it is all worth it.... his books kick ass!
Oh, STOP please!.......2002-04-06
I laughed until I started coughing up blood. This is without question the funniest script I've ever read in my life, but if I told you why, I'd have to kill you.

Book Description
More than 1,500 years after the foundational church councils, the doctrine of the Trinity is still as central and as puzzling to theologians as ever. Reformed theology has seen increasing calls for the Trinity to live at the center of Christian confession, prompting the need for a fuller biblical and practical understanding of the subject. In recent Reformed thought, Cornelius Van Til and Cornelius Plantinga, Jr. have proposed important trinitarian theologies. Ralph Smith assesses these views and, filling out a Van Tilian perspective with Kuyper's lesser-known covenantal view, he provides a refreshing biblical, historical, and applicable perspective on this key Christian reality.

The encyclopedic Rick Stein's Complete Seafood is particularly welcome. Not only does the British chef's book offer 150 attractive recipes and step-by-step instructional color photographs--it classifies the world's seafood in a thorough, approachable, and up-to-date way. This is no small accomplishment. Fish classification is notoriously vexed; local usage can result in multiple names for the same fish--one person's dolphinfish is, for example, another's mahi mahi--or dozens of different fish with the same name. Grouping seafood by anatomical distinctions, such as billfish (which includes swordfish and marlin), as well as by family, helps create a clearer picture; and color illustrations, plus a valuable chart that delineates common, Latin, and family names, as well as home-region, further elucidates what's what and where.
In addition, the oversize book's technical illustration, which delves far beyond the usual guide to filleting, skinning, and the like, is an informative trove. Preparing flatfish for broiling and for deep frying are two examples of this thoroughness that also covers baking whole fish in foil; butterflying raw shrimp for broiling; and preparing raw, smoked, and, cured fish, among other key methods. The central section of the book is devoted to Stein's recipes, which range from the simple and direct, like Baked Sea Bass with Roasted Red Pepper, Tomatoes and Anchovies, and Sautéed Soft-Shell Crabs with Garlic Butter, to the more dressy, such as Fillet of Bass with Vanilla Butter Vinaigrette and Mussels en Croustade with Leeks and White Wine. Offered with suggestions for using alternative fish types, the formulas also help readers make sense of seafood's bounty--and to find recipes based on market availability. This book, designed for all cooks with more than a passing interest in seafood, is among today's best kitchen resources. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
The ultimate fast food, fish is the home cook's no-fuss yet sophisticated weeknight or company dinner. But often even the most nimble cooks are limited to a handful of varieties of fish and shellfish, intimidated away from others despite every fishmonger's best attempt to dispense cooking directions. What these cooks really need is a color step-by-step guide that shows how to work with the other 90 percent of seafood that's under the glass. Seafood cooking school proprietor Rick Stein has just the answer in this heavily photographic manual with recipes. RICK STEIN'S SEAFOOD shows in detail how to scale and gut round fish for the grill, skin and panfry whole flat fish, fillet small round fish for stuffing, bake whole fish in a salt or pastry casing, hot-smoke fish, prepare live crabs for steaming, clean and stuff squid, and much, much more. More than 200 recipes, such as Sea Bass Baked in a Salt Crust and Stuffed Grilled Mussels, will inspire cooks to put the techniques Stein presents to good use. Extensive charts and color illustrations help cooks tell their mackerel from their monkfish.

The Best You've Ever Read On Fish--Bar None.......2007-08-09
I own over 1,000 cookbooks, am a trained chef, and a food/wine/travel writer and editor. I must say without fear of contradiction that this book is the ULTIMATE guide to all things that swim and how to cook them. Not only recipes, techniques, and guides, but insight and understanding, all written with Rick's great sincerity and true love of his field. Moreover, unlike some other books, the recipes are sorted by FISH, not by region or type of dish, so you get to basically buy what's fresh then wander through ideas for it that range from asia to europe to latin america and that are ALL spectacularly appetizing. YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK if you ever plan to cook fish. It really is that good.
Awesome Cookbook.......2007-06-08
For anyone who loves to cook, especially Seafood, this is an awesome book full of beautiful pictures and easy to follow instructions. I highly recommend it for the novice as well as the more experienced chefs.
Essential Seafood Cooking Reference. Buy It........2006-01-07
`rick stein's complete seafood' by, you guessed it, English restauranteur and culinary teacher, Rick Stein is the kind of book which promises great things and thereby simply invites criticism for its presumptuous title. I think I can safely say that no book that claims to be a `Bible' or `Complete' really does give either a total or fully authoritative treatment of its subject. But the fact that this book happens to be just a bit less than `complete' is no reason not to buy it, because it does give a full treatment of some very important aspects of cooking seafood.
The book is divided into three great parts containing thirteen chapters. These parts and chapters are:
Part 1 - Techniques
Introduction
Chapter 1 - Preparing Fish
Chapter 2 - Cooking Fish
Chapter 3 - Preparing raw, smoked, and cured fish
Chapter 4 - Preparing and cooking seafood
Part 2 - Recipes
Chapter 5 - Soups, stews, and mixed seafood
Chapter 6 - Large meaty fish, skate, and eels
Chapter 7 - Large Round fish
Chapter 8 - Small round fish
Chapter 9 - Flatfish
Chapter 10 - Crustaceans
Chapter 11 - Mollusks and other seafood
Chapter 12 - Stocks, Sauces, and Basic Recipes
Part 3 - Information
Chapter 13 - Seafood Families
Identifying Seafood - Pictures of seafood animal groups
Classifying Seafood - Species which may be substituted for one another
Index of Recipes
The easiest way to see where this book falls short of `completeness' is to look at Alan Davidson's three excellent volumes on seafood of the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and southeast Asia. Davidson's books may be more for the scholar than for the casual cook, but they do give valuable information on where to find various species, in which local cuisines they commonly occur, and hundreds of ethnically accurate recipes. Stein says very little about regionality or about specific species. Stein is a hedgehog to Davidson's fox in that Stein concentrates on grouping things best seen in his first and third parts.
His first part covers 57 seafood preparation and cooking techniques independent of any individual recipe, although he ingeniously links each technique with a specific recipe in Part 2 so that you can embed the technique within the recipe. In comparison, the best two other books on culinary techniques, Jacques Pepin's `Complete Techniques' and James Peterson's `Essentials of Cooking' have 32 and 18 techniques respectively on fish cookery. And, while I think Pepin's procedures are models of instruction, his pictures are in black and white, which looses a bit for the beginner. These differences become a bit less impressive for an amateur when you look at the specific techniques and realize that there are many techniques here which you are unlikely to ever use, especially those dealing with breaking down a whole fish.
The last part is also a great resource for the amateur cook in that it gives some ideas on what seafood species may be substituted for another. These sections also give some information on the regions of the world in which you are likely to find each species genus. As such, it gives some of the information you will find in Davidson, but organized `vertically' by genus or larger biological category rather than by species and location. This section, especially the `seafood families' chapter may take some study for those of us who slept through biology class when the aquatic phyla were being covered, as groupings are often given in unfamiliar terms such as `cephalopods'. Oddly other groupings are given in very common names such as `the herring family' or `mackerel and tuna'. The academic in me finds this annoying, not that the author did not stick to scientific names, but that there was no parallelism in section naming. The `cephalopods' section would have been better named `squid and its relatives'. The most entertaining section is the `identifying seafood' sections with what I believe are scale pictures of 98 representatives of seafood species. The selection is just a bit Eurocentric, as a picture of what I would certainly call a `Maine' lobster is named a `European Lobster'. And, while there are six crab pics, none are the primary American West Coast species generally called the Dungeness crab. The very last section, `classifying seafood', is useful for matching up a particular fish with a method in Part 1. This tells me, for example, that the north Atlantic goosefish is a variety of monkfish and the wolfish can be treated like a sea catfish.
The middle part on recipes may be where the notion of `completeness' may lead one to the biggest disappointments. This chapter, for example, has but one simple recipe for court bouillon while Mark Bittman's excellent `Fish' book has three different recipes, including one traditional French recipe and a Cajun `couboillon' recipe. In several other examples I find Stein's recipes to be less than the best. I compared his New England clam chowder recipe with one from Jasper White's definitive '50 Chowders' and I find Stein's recipe pretty uninspired. I say this with confidence because I have made several of White's chowders and they are uniformly excellent dishes. Another symptom that the book is less than complete is the fact that there is no recipe for `New York' clam chowder.
My final word on this book is that if you aspire to be a serious seafood cook, you need at least three books. This volume in addition to Mark Bittman's book of recipes and at least Alan Davidson's book of North Atlantic seafood. It would be best to have all three.
A superior book in many ways, but not complete!
A must buy!.......2005-09-08
Absolutely the best fish/seafood cookbook I've run across... what else can I say.
Great.......2005-08-20
Along with Bittman's opus, this is the one that I turn to when cooking fish. I love the way that he describes the types of fish -- it allows one to go beyond the actual text and thing of ways to prepare. But if you are a "by the list" cook, you will not at all be let down. The receipts in this book are fantastic and well worth the cover charge. I have had it since it came out in its American edition and am most glad that I bought it. This book was recently reviewed as one of the top ten cookbooks ever in the UK's Waitrose magazine -- and they know that of which they write.

Guide to Owning a Ragdoll Cat.......2006-03-08
Excellent reference for Ragdoll owners. This book is so comprehensive you won't need anything else. All you need to know about your Ragdoll and more.
Excellent!.......2005-02-03
I bought this book last week, and have had a lot of fun reading it! We added a Ragdoll cat to our family last year, and I had been looking for a good book about Ragdolls! It gives history of the breed's origin, the special nature of the breed, etc. It is just what I thought I was buying. If you have a Ragdoll, or are planning to get one, this will be a fun and useful tool for you!
A reader from Arizona.......2001-08-28
A wonderful amount of information in a little pocket guide ... I enjoyed this book and found it very useful. It has been difficult to find much information on this wonderful breed, and Ms. Nelson has done a great job trying to impart as many facts as possible while keeping the book a manageable size.
WONDERFUL BOOK!!! RAGDOLLS RULE!!!.......2001-08-25
Whether a Ragdoll is not yet the most enchanting part of your family, or you are already in love head over heels with three or four of these most precious of felines, Susan Nelson's "Guide To Owning A Ragdoll Cat" is the perfect selection for you. Susan knows what she's talking about when describing the soft sweet Ragdoll personality since she's owned by three of these angels herself. The photos are delightfully crisp and clear, picturing a full range of Ragdoll colors and patterns, even the relatively new lynx and flame... and bring out the devastatingly blue eyes that will hypnotize you as if by magic. Susan makes excellent points about the absolute importance of finding a responsible ethical breeder, and makes clear that meeting several breeders and several visits to catteries is highly desirable. She also points out how large some of the Ragdolls can become, and how important it is to properly support their bodies when picked up. Her description of how to make your house Ragdoll friendly (safe), and how to choose toys is invaluable. She stresses the importance of having a scratch tree available. Care of the Ragdoll's health is discussed in detail, from bathing to grooming to dental hygiene to trimming nails... She discusses how to choose a vet, an extremely important topic, vaccinations, spaying and neutering, common feline illnesses... What to feed baby... Bringing Baby home... going on vacation... breeding, showing... I can't think of a SINGLE THING that she neglected to discuss that would be of consequence to anyone interested in Ragdolls. I am so enthused about this book. I wish I had seen it before I spent so much time trying to decide about bringing a Ragdoll home... and it has cleared up several questions I had once I was owned by my Ragdolls. This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Susan also publishes a wonderful Ragdoll calendar every year...
I was disappointed too.......2001-08-23
While this book provides an adequate summary of the things I have learnt about Ragdolls, I found it difficult to read; not because the language was too technical, but because the writer seems to lack a proper grasp of how to structure paragraphs and how to move from one topic to the next. I found that some of the information was duplicated in other sections which is unnecessary. I was also disappointed at the lack of variety in cats used for the photos; the same cats appear on many pages. I would have liked to see a range of pictures showing the various colours and patterns. Despite these criticisms, I found the information about travelling with the cats useful and also the section about showing. I wouldn't rush out to buy this book if you are simply seeking more information about the breed; you have probably already found out more on the 'net. However, if you just want to have everything you know about Ragdolls in one spot, it is a good record.

This is the one I still glance through,.......2006-11-18
I bought a stack of casual feng shui books and I used them for guiding furniture placement so really, for me, it was more design than superstition that this philosophy is useful. This is by far the most readable and most engaging. I'm not crazy about the cover photo but the interior uses pastel water color illustrations to describe furniture placement and energy lines. It was a fun experience and I don't regret the purchase.
The only Feng Shui book that speaks to me.......2005-10-09
I've browsed or read many different books on Feng Shui, but none of them speaks to me the way this one does. I'll admit I'm quite partial to Lam Kam Chuen, whose book on Qigong, (The Way of Energy) changed my life, and continues to impress me as the "must-have" book on qigong.
In the Feng Shui Handbook, Lam uses an authentic Chinese Feng Shui paradigm (the five animals map) which is much simple, practical, and makes intuitive sense, as opposed to the mind-bending intricacies of other schools such as lo-shan, bagua, magic squares, Chinese astrology, compass directions, red strings and octogonal mirrors, which seem to me based more in superstition than practical effect.
Lam's Feng Shui Handbook is the only feng shui handbook I've ever needed!
the fundamentals.......2005-07-08
First book on Feng Shui I ever bought, must have been some 6 years ago, and it is good that it so happened, cause this boko lays down the fundamentals (5 energies, 4 animals, energy flow, cycles of change, numbers and triagrams) and then gives practical examples and modes of employing your newly acquired knowledge. After almost a dozen feng shui books bought and read, this one is still fresh and equally as good as the first time I read it.
A practical intro to a wisdom that works!.......2003-10-15
One can find many misleading Feng Shui books today, claiming ancient wisdom while in reality written by modern charlatans wishing to make a buck. Not this book! "The Feng Shui Handbook" is one of the best books I have found on the subject, and it seems to be accurate and trustworthy, in addition to containing many beautiful and useful color photos and illustrations, making it a very interesting read. It is written by an authoritative master of this Chinese art which, even now, is taught in architecture universities throughout China.
I was reading this book prior to moving into my present residence a few years ago. The book gave me practical knowledge and advice on choosing which apartment to rent, how to arrange my furniture, and how to decorate the place. The advice given is practical and makes sense. For example it points out that having a wall behind one's seat feels much more comfortable than having empty space (try it!). Another recommendation I gleaned from the book is buying a screen to partially block the front door, an experiment that made my living room much more comfortable and cozy. The end result of using this book's advice is years of enjoyment in my residence, and an endless stream of compliments by everyone who visits me about how comfortable and cozy my living space is. This in turn has contributed much to my satisfaction with life and well-being over the past few years.
I have since used this book to rearrange my office space at work, and again the result is much more comfort and better productivity than my previous arrangement. The book gives you advice not only about positioning things, but choosing the appropriate colors and material for furniture and surroundings. I definitely will refer to this book soon when I go looking for my first house. It is the next best thing to hiring a real Feng Shui expert from China, and it works!
trying to grasp the concept of energy fields.......2002-06-19
This is just a wonderful intro to Chinese science and philosophy. You see the glory of the Northern Lights or watch a passing thunderstorm and intuitively understand the give-and-take of energy.
Lam Kam Chuen really strives to place Chinese science in the mainstream of Western Einsteinian physics. He isn't concerned with adjusting your dresser to cure corns. He may have an opinion on that, as might Einstein, but if that is what you're seeking, you should read Dr. Scholl's.
This book is effective because of the brushed demonstrations of energy flows in the latter half of the book. You are free to accept or reject this approach, but I believe it is an effective approach to this cross-cultural experience.

An Excellent Historical Portrait.......2003-05-21
Woman of Color, Daughter of Privilege tells the story of Amanda Dickson, daughter of a wealthy plantation owner in rural Georgia and one of his slaves. Amanda was much loved by her father and amazingly went on to inherit most of his estate upon his death despite the strict racial segregation and discrimination of the era. Obviously, this situation was unique for its time. The book is very well-written,very informative and provides a good glimpse into the life of a privileged woman in a strictly segregated society. Highly recommended
