In its English translation the title was changed from "Azazel" to "The Winter Queen". Yes, this is the first novel that Boris Akunin wrote. This novel made him a well-known writer.

Read it in original to see how much was lost in translation. By the way, there has been some talk that Azazel was optioned by Hollywood producer Paul Verhoeven (director of Basic Instinct). We'll see what's going to happen. In any case, I would highly recommend this novel for a reader who loves intriguing detective stories.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of a Good Series.......2004-01-18

I love the George-and-Azazel stories, but not all of them are of the highest quality. I'm glad I read this particular volume, but it's not something I'd recommend you to run over hill and dale looking for. I actually like the Azazel stories in Magic: The Final Fantasy Collection a little better, and you can find it in most libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Good piece of detective story.......2003-05-24

Isaac Asimov is quite well known translator from Japanese to Russian. He conducted life of intelectual indulging himself only in his job and writing some high-brow pieces of literature, not for ordinary people. And then he decided to do something with his skills and wrote Azazel, his first detective story. It's great, with atmosphere dating back to Doyle and Christie. And it's not only intriguing, gluing, interesting, thirillind, crisp etc. but also perfectly written with a hand of Russian intelectual.

5 out of 5 stars Be careful what you ask for.......2002-06-23

This is a collection of funny short stories by the author, all about the two-centimeter high demon Azazel (not its real name, but the real name cannot be pronounced easily). Azazel rides about in the pocket of a friend (descended from magicians and able to summon a demon), and the friend narrates the adventures. The problem is that Azazel wants to be helpful, but the wishes people have in mind are not always translated well in their directions. It is like programming a computer - you must be very careful (garbage in means garbage out, or in this case bad or incomplete directions may have unexpected results).

Want to be attractive to women? Done! Whoops, you didn't mean that kind of woman? Afraid of bullies, and don't want anyone to lay a hand on you? Done! Whoops, you didn't mean everyone including your girlfriend? You get the picture. Remember King Midas.

5 out of 5 stars Azazel will blow you away ..........2000-04-19

Adventures of this inadequate demon, which is summoned by those, who can't summon more potent demons causes lot of belly shaking humor, which will have you reading the book over, and over, and after some time passes you will recall the good chuckle you had while reading it, and so you will go back, and read it again. Out of the hundreds of books that Asimov wrote in his very prolific span as a writer this is one of his masterpieces, and once you acquire this book, you will not let it go. Trust me.

4 out of 5 stars Un polar différent!.......2004-11-15

                  3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-07

The sixth book in the Childe Cycle is fairly philosophical. Hal Mayne visits the Chantry Guild, in its incarnation in this time. He spends a lot of time with them on the planet Kultis still trying to understand and spearhead the final transformation of humankind.

As before, he is sometimes opposed by those that want to stop him, Bleys specifically.

5 out of 5 stars Good continuation of cycle, but definitely flawed.......2003-09-02

Following up the Final Encyclopedia was no doubt a daunting task, especially with that book's massive impact on the Childe Cycle as a whole, finally giving the series a sense of direction and the ability to head toward a definite conclusion, as well as giving purpose to the previous books, which had sort of floated along in a shared Universe sort of fashion. And yet Dickson had to follow it up to give the Final Encyclopedia any meaning, since the ending to that book was so anti-climatic that the words "To Be Continued" might have as well have been stamped there in giant letters. So faithfully Dickson gives us this book, the title teasingly implying that this might be the long awaited conclusion, with its promises of tying in to the very beginning of the Cycle (the Chantry Guild was last seen in the first book in the series, Necromancer, and apparently gave rise to the Exotic Culture). Instead, we get some furthering of the Cycle's themes but a lot of water-treading as well. Hal's victory in the last book was not a complete one and he is finding himself stymied in his efforts to make a total breakthrough and use the Encyclopedia for its true purpose. Amanda Morgan mentions that he should seek out a new incarnation of the Chantry Guild to find what he needs. So Hal does. That's pretty much it, which is pretty much the problem with this book, Dickson spends most of his time trying to do a lot with comparitively little. Hal's quest to unlock the "Creative Universe" is sort of vague and the terms of his victory against Bleys becomes more and more muddled as the book goes on. I'm not even sure how the Creative Universe will help him win, whatever it is. The bulk of the novel is taken up on Kultis where Hal tries to learn from the Chantry Guild and this is where Dickson's pacing fails him . . . it's simply too long a section of the book. Incidents that should take less than a chapter stretch out to multiple chapters, for no real reason. The main problem (soldiers finding the Guild) has nothing to do with the overall quest and the characters spend too much time focusing on who is going to track down the wild child that is roaming around outside than, you know, saving the Universe. Plus the sequence of attacking the soldiers' camp goes on way too long and features very little action. Then Hal leaves and we never hear about the people there again, anyway. Bleys puts in a token appearance simply to annoy Hal it seems and it all wraps up at the Encyclopedia. Maybe. Dickson's ending this time is perhaps more vague than the last book and just sort of leaves the reader hanging. What is good about this book? The supporting characters are well developed and Dickson's writing, when not mired in pseudo-philosophical meanderings, is an interesting as ever. And the future history is as fascinating as ever. But the sad thing is that way too important events happen to justify this book's length. While the previous book had epic scope and status quo shaking events, this plot is too much point A to point B stuff. However, it's readable and a crucial addition to the Cycle, which makes it essential if you've read this far. Unfortunately I'm not sure Dickson ever brought the Cycle to a satisifying conclusion, the next two books are mostly focused on Bleys' early life and I'm not sure if those books further the story of Hal at all. And without Dickson having now passed on for a few years, if the ending hasn't been published (or written) we're not about to see it. So this is a step down from the previous book but still interesting in itself. Just don't start here, by any means.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly edited and difficult to follow.......2002-07-16

I was given this book a few years ago by a friend, and finally picked it up to read this summer. I have not read any other books in the "Childe Cycle" that this book is apparently part of, which perhaps is a big part of my reason for my poor impression of it.

At a basic level, there is an editorial sloppiness to the book. There were far too many sentences that clearly are missing words, as well as a couple of places where entire phrases were inadvertantly repeated in the same paragraph. Yes, it's a minor annoyance, but distracting just the same.

The author also does a bad job of giving background to readers who haven't read the previous books. I realize that coming into the middle of any series can be challenging, but even some basic introduction to important elements in the main characters' backgrounds is typical. I once made the mistake of picking up a relatively late book in Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series (Crown of Thorns) as my first, but I felt I eventually understood most of what I needed to in order to appreciate that book as a story on it's own. Not so with The Chantry Guild... Dickson is very haphazard about background, and as a result, the primary struggle in the book, the protagonist's (Hal's) effort to reach the "Creative Universe", is baffling and ultimately incomprehensible.

Or perhaps I'm being too generous by giving Dickson that out... even if I had read the rest of the series, I'm not sure it would make sense. Too much of the book is spent in rambling third-person narration describing Hal's internal monologue and thoughts as he grapples with this intangible metaphysical goal. It is hard to read, bogs down the other plots, and proves ultimately unsatisfying in that, despite being told over and over again that this task is the main character's life goal and is somehow tied to the fate of humanity, why or how is completely unclear. Perhaps by this point in the series we are supposed to be so attached to this character that seeing him achieve something very important to him is supposed to be satisfying to us by itself. But as a new reader, I didn't find myself caring about this guy much, and I want to know what the point of all the navel-gazing was and how it might actually help save humanity. In some ways, this plot is very derivative of Paul Atreides' messiah quest in Dune, and Dickson's work in this book suffers badly in comparison.

The more traditional plot in the book is not particularly noteworthy either. Dickson spends *130* pages on what is basically a small-scale action sequence that takes place over a day as the secret village Hal stays in is first threatened by enemy search parties and then caught up in rescuing a few of their own who are caught by the bad guys. The story moves excruciatingly slowly. Worse, all of the struggle and effort we are dragged through ultimately serves no clear narrative purpose, other than to physically exhaust the protagonist to the point that he can get a good night's sleep and have a breakthrough in his metaphysical journey. The "enemy" even finds them anyway as the result of very casually-noted aerial surveillance (setting up a highly contrived visit by the arch-nemesis), and the characters being rescued are discarded so quickly afterwards that we are never given the resolution of their personal stories, which Dickson had spewed many pages setting up.

Of course, it's not all bad. The "world" this story is set in is well-conceived and interesting, and there are some really innovative aspects of the protagonists' backgrounds. Refreshingly, relatively little time is spent on technology, and when he chooses to, Dickson can describe this world with clear and vivid images that one can easily imagine making a transition to a movie screen.

Overall, this is a weak book that, while potentially interesting to those who have become engrossed in the rest of the series, should be avoided by anyone else. It would be much better if it were a 100 pages shorter and provided a better explanation of what came before and the significance of the "Creative Universe".

3 out of 5 stars A Weaker Novel of the Childe Cycle.......2001-06-18

Gordon R. Dickson's 'The Final Encyclopedia' is easily one of the greatest novels of science-fiction. The novels that precede it in the series are also all first rate works. But sadly, the three novels that follow, 'Young Bleys,' 'Other,' and 'The Chantry Guild,' are considerably weaker. While 'The Chantry Guild' does give some reward to the readers who've followed the series for years, it still lacks the final resolution that we've waited for, (no doubt Dickson is planning more books in the series), and the bulk of the work is just plain uninteresting. If you're a fan of the series then you probably should give this one a look, if you're new to the Childe Cycle you might want to start with 'Tactics of Mistake,' of 'Soldier, Ask Not.'

5 out of 5 stars Gripping and powerful.......2000-10-22

The Canadian Gordon Dickson is, in my opinion, the greatest SF writer of all time. His Childe Cyle novels are the finest Sf series that has ever been written, in my humble opinion. These novels are gripping, and with a depth and scope that is unmatched in the history of SF. There have been many great SF series with scope and depth, but none with the over all vision of Dickson. He knows where he is going in these novels and each seamlessly integrates with the previous, and with each other. The Chantry Guild continues the story of Hal and elaborates on the universe Dickson has created, all the while elegantly commenting on the human condition. The depth and power of these books is consciousnes raising, but at the same time they are really fun to read. That is a combination that is nearly impossible to attain, but Mr. Dickson has done it.

                                    Book Description

Based on a biblical and historical study of what Jesus ate, as well as scientific research on why these particular foods are ideal for healthy living, What Would Jesus Eat? is the ultimate program for eating well in the twenty-first century. Now, this companion cookbook helps readers to creatively and practically incorporate these foods into their own diets.

These easy-to-follow recipes are designed to help the reader prepare foods commonly eaten during the time of Christ in a way that will satisfy modern-day palates. Dishes feature fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish, olive oil, and more. This unique cookbook is ideal for anyone desiring to safely lose weight or simply eat healthier.

Yet another example of someone invoking Christanity in order to sell a sub-par effort. This is the second time I have bought a book with Christian reference and the second time I have been ripped off. While this book has a catchy title, it is not worth opening. The title can be read for free. I highly suggest you stop there and save your money!

First of all, I did not think this was a lousy cookbook because I disagreed with the vision of it. I think that it really was put together fast and cheap, probably to make a quick dollar. There were many typos, wrong measurements, and some nasty tasting food.
I am no CIA(Culinary Institue of America) chef, but I am a housewife who loves to cook. If I have to improve on a cookbooks recipe, then it must be bad. You are better off finding something else. Our you can have mine for free!

First I learned what Jesus would eat, and now with this lofty book, Mr. Colbert teaches us just how Jesus would cook it. I find this all to be astonishingly remarkable. Not only how Jesus fed himself during those difficult times in the latter part of those days, but he apparently fed himself AFTER selecting the food and cooking it. That's amazing stuff folks. I think many here are right when they say it could have been better, because NOWHERE are there any indications of how to turn my tap water into wine, or how to feed my neighborhood with just a can of beef-a-roni and a loaf of bread. So, in this respect, I was greatly disheartened. But, otherwise, this book is the greatest.

This is a wonderful book that goes strictly out of the Bible on how we are supposed to eat! I would highly recommend this book to anyone!!!

This book was wonderful. Very helpful and informative. Much of the book is now highlighted with information I will refer back to. Tried the suggestion for treating "White Line Disease" and it appears to help. For years I have withstood the "shoes are necessary" thought process so often presented, and have only had shoes put on a couple of times under a strong recommendation of a vet(for a quarter crack.) Now there is documented evidence that my thoughts were not incorrect. THANK YOU! Because of the quality of this book, I have just ordered Jaime's (3) DVD's on Natural Horse Trims. While a little nervous about starting this process myself, if his videos are as good as his book, I'm sure it will work out. I definitly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve the health and well-being of their horses.

This book is a true lifesaver for horses. I recommend this to every horse owner not just owners with foundered horses. The information provided is clear and concise and isnt airy fairy like a lot of books. The information solid and the methods presented really do work on every horse. Overall a fantastic book that will save many horses. Thank-you to Jaime Jackson for writing this book and your other titles- you saved my horses and many others.

I have a horse that founders on grass very easily. The last time it happened I was sure he was lame for life. It was at this time that I got this book and read about horses with much worses cases that have been cured. We are lucky that we already had a practitioner of natural hoof care (trimming only). Working with him and what we learn from the book is allowing is to get this horse back to good health and hopefully keep him there. It's a small book but well worth the money.

Biggest disappointment: Details of those items pictured with black backgrounds are often difficult to see. The majority of those items would have displayed much better with a different color background. It takes a lot of books on Czech items to find what you're looking for. That gets a bit expensive. I've had very good luck finding less expensive books at bookfinder4u.com. Even the supposedly used ones that I've received have been in nearly excellent condition.

The authors of this lovely addition to the Weekend Crafter series believe that glass etching is the ultimate simplicity-seeker's craft, a process that achieves beauty through the art of removal. In other words, by applying one of the new, safe etching creams or liquids over a masked-out pattern to take away part of the glass surface, even beginners can create beautiful pieces that successfully mimic the look of old-fashioned glass etchings--the kind that generally require harmful chemicals or expensive blasting equipment. This book is *the* essential book on Issa for English readers, and for Japanese who read English as well. Debunking a great deal of the myth (some of which Issa seems directly responsible for), this book gives a straightforward overview of the poet's life and the development of his haiku. Showing that although he did indeed have a difficult childhood and youth, Issa gained serious recognition and financial security in his middle years, even returning to his childhood home as a modestly comfortable landowner. It also takes up the forces bearing on his development as a poet, including the haiku hierarchy of his time and the effects of this and of religion and personal tragedy late in life on his changing poetics. The plentiful translations, of haiku, a complete linked poem, and a number of short prose pieces, are well done and worth the price of admission.

                                              Book Description

Roy Lichtenstein's distinctive paintings of the early 1960s are synonymous with the Pop art movement. These bold, oversized images inspired by newspaper advertisements and comic book scenes have been taken as reflecting the artist's fascination with the links between art and popular culture. In this highly readable and original book, Michael Lobel challenges this circumscribed view of Lichtenstein's work, offering a set of compelling new interpretations that reveal the artist's confrontation with a far wider range of issues. Lichtenstein's art is fundamentally engaged with a set of concerns central to art making in the postwar period: the relation between vision and technology, the possibility of articulating artistic identity, and the effect of mechanical reproduction on the work of art. Lichtenstein's project, Lobel argues, is structured by the tension between painting understood as a fully expressive, humanistic gesture and, conversely, as the product of a purely mechanical act. This handsomely illustrated book makes available for the first time an array of archival materials about Lichtenstein and his work, including photographs of the artist and many newly discovered sources for his imagery in the comics and advertisements of the early 1960s. It also provides new information on the context of the artist's Pop paintings in relation to contemporary developments in advertising culture, mechanical reproduction, and visual technologies. Examining the artist's work from fresh perspectives, the author not only offers a comprehensive analysis of Lichtenstein's early Pop paintings but also provides new insight into the issues that shaped the Pop art movement, artistic practices in the 1960s, and the historical relation between modern art and popular culture.

One of only a very few books on Roy Lichtenstein available is fortunately a very good one indeed. Includes an analysis of his work, his sources and influences, and his influence on contemporary art. Illustrations include some of the source material for his most recognized paintings. Smart, sensible, accessible, and attractive.

A moving celebration of the mother of African American literature, from the pen of a master storyteller and scholar.

The slave Phillis Wheatley literally wrote her way to freedom when, in 1773, she became the first person of African descent to publish a book of poems in the English language. The toast of London, lauded by Europeans as diverse as Voltaire and Gibbon, Wheatley was for a time the most famous black woman in the West. Though Benjamin Franklin received her and George Washington thanked her for poems she dedicated to him, Thomas Jefferson refused to acknowledge her gifts. "Religion, indeed, has produced a Phillis Wheatley," he wrote, "but it could not produce a poet." In other words, slaves have misery in their lives, and they have souls, but they lack the intellectual and aesthetic endowments required to create literature.

In this book based on his 2002 Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities at the Library of Congress, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., explores the pivotal roles that Wheatley and Jefferson have played in shaping the black literary tradition.

He brings to life the characters and debates that fermented around Wheatley in her day and illustrates the peculiar history that resulted in Thomas Jefferson's being lauded as a father of the black freedom struggle and Phillis Wheatley's vilification as something of an Uncle Tom. It is a story told with all the lyricism and critical skill that have placed Gates at the forefront of American letters.

                                              4 out of 5 stars A Study of A Poetess's Reception through the Centuries.......2005-08-15

Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s _The Trials Phillis Wheatley_ considers Phillis Wheatley's career through the eyes of her readers over two centuries, from elite Massachussetts whites who in 1772 quizzed Wheatley to determine if she, a young slave, had indeed composed the poems herself, to twentieth-century critics who find her voice inauthentic and too forgiving of her white enslavers. Gates' book is a longer version of the prestigious Jefferson Lecture, which he gave in 2002, and is a great introduction to Phillis Wheatley. Wheatley's writing career, in particular her mastery of the classical forms of eighteenth-century English prosody, is fascinating.

Wheatley was kidnapped as a seven-year old from her home in West Africa in 1761, survived the terrible Middle Passage, and then was sold into bondage to the Wheatley family in Massachusetts. Nine years later in 1770, at the age of 16, despite lacking formal schooling and having only nine years exposure to English, she was a published poet. Two years later in 1772 she published a volume of poetry _Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral_, which was the first book of poems published by a person of African origin.

What is so strong about Gates' book is his discussion of the impact of Wheatley's poems and how her mastery of literacy challenged the racist ideology of slaveholders and their supporters. Wheatley corresponded with George Washington and other luminaries, and the international sensation of her poems prompted Thomas Jefferson to critique them as being unoriginal. Gates argues that Jefferson's critique in _Notes on the State of Virginia_, grounded in racism and defensiveness, ironically shaped African American literature in its vibrant, sustained critique of Jefferson's claims by contemporary and later writers, such as David Walker, William Hamilton, William Wells Brown, Frederick Douglass, and many others. Gates concludes his book by discussing how Wheatley's reputation slowly changed in the nineteenth century, mainly due to interpretations of one poem, "On Being Brought from Africa to America." Gates writes that for a number of readers, "the paragon of Negro achievement, was now given a new role: race traitor."

Gates' work presents an excellent, readable overview of Wheatley's career by drawing from the breadth of existing scholarship. He makes a strong argument that Wheatley needs to be read with an awareness of late eighteenth-century history and understood for her vital contribution.

Two criticisms of the book: First, I wish Gates had also published Wheatley's poems, which are expensive to purchase and not widely available in bookstores, and then made his work an introduction to the poems. Second, on a related point, I wish that Gates had interpreted more poems. Wheatley's poems are rich with transcultural underpinnings and insights, and it would have been wonderful to read more of his explications of her work. Her work can be challenging for contemporary readers unfamilar with the conventions of eighteenth-century poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Reminder from Gates.......2004-08-08

Gates' book places the writing life of Phillis Wheatley into a context that should prompt readers to reexamine popular condemnations (past and present) of her credibility and literary merit. This text is a refreshing reminder that we readers have a responsibility "to learn to read Wheatley anew, unblinkered by the anxieties of her time and ours. That's the only way to let Phillis Wheatley take a stand. The challenge isn't to read white, or read black; it is to read. If Wheatley stood for anything, it was the creed that culture was, could be, the equal possession of all humanity. It was a lesson she was swift to teach, and that we have been slow to learn" (89-90). This book is a quick read and would be an ideal text for instructors.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......2003-08-08

In 1773 a young woman burst onto the literary scene. And what made this particular author a sensation? The young woman in question was Phillis Wheatley, an African slave writing poetry in English. Her slender books of poems was a literary first, causing critics to mutter.

Brought before an panel of eighteen learned gentleman of the time, Phillis Wheatley proved that persons of African descent could think, read and write works of literature. For a few brief years, Phillis was a author known to both the colonies and Europe, think Oprah, think Alice Walker, think Maya Angelou of her day. Sadly, with Revolution at hand, her literary career stumbled with Phillis and her only surviving child dying much too young.

But that was not the end of Phillis Wheatley. Her surviving works have endured and been subjected to levels of awe and loathing in the centuries since her death. In some camps, Phillis Wheatley is a mother of the slave narrative, in others a sell-out, an Aunt Thomasina making her then masters happy.

Author Henry Louis Gates, Jr does a wonderful job of looking at the literary life of a much loved and much reviled author. The only jarring point? The covers of this fine volume are much too close together, THE TRIALS OF PHILLIS WHEATLEY was a quick read and I found myself sad to have the book end.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little tribute to Phillis Wheatley.......2003-07-08

Mostly a summary of the literary career of Phillis Wheatley, a teenaged slave, born in Africa and later bought by John and Susanna Wheatley of Boston for less than ten pounds, who would unknowingly kickstart the African American literary tradition with her "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral," published in 1773. Described by Gates as "the Oprah Winfrey of her time," Wheatley defied the conventional racist wisdom of the time by proving that people of African descent could write poetry and produce European notions of Art. Gates does a good job of tracing the trajectory of her work throughout the years following her sad demise (her poetry would grant her manumission, but she would die free, poor and alone at the age of thirty). Gates' main critique in the book is of the unfair criticism he feels critics of the Black Power Movement gave her, by questioning her "authenticity" and accusing her of being "too white." He ties this in to Thomas Jefferson's criticisms of Wheatley some two-hundred years earlier, who dismissed her poetry as bad enough to prove that Africans indeed were inferior to Anglos in the arena of "reason." Citing a recent poll suggesting that "acting white" was aligned with "speaking standard English, getting straight A's, or even visiting the Smithsonian," Gates uses a bizarre logic to make his ultimate point: "In reviving the ideology of 'authenticity'--especially in a Hip Hop world where too many of our children think it's easier to become Michael Jordan than Vernon Jordan--we have ourselves reforged the manacles of an earlier, admittedly racist era" (p. 84-5). Whether one views Jefferson's or even Amiri Baraka's criticisms of Wheatley's poetry as remotely similar, Gates' little book does a tidy little job of setting up for the reader the historical processes and miracles that allowed for Wheatley to publish the poems (--good or bad--it's up to you to decide!) that initiated the African American literary tradition.
