Book Description
Trine Erotic is perhaps the first novel to explore evolutionary psychology (the new "science of the mind"). This "novel of ideas" -- what author Andrews calls "evolutionary fiction," "biofiction," and "meta-seductive fiction"-- also explores why we write: to seduce (as mating strategy), to process, to heal ourselves and ultimately readers, to find meaning. It's concerned with memes -- and art and culture's ability to influence our lives. And it attempts to address the questions of love that preoccupy us, like passionate love versus companionate love, selfish love and selfless love; looking at love through a triune system, which Andrews calls: "evolution, experience, and culture." Finally, it is also a book about reconciliation of familiar polarities and dichotomies -- of spirituality and science; feminine and masculine principles/archetypes, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Topics I talk about with my best girlfriends BUT..........2007-05-28
... we don't talk about brownies or The Gap. Andrews explores human mating strategies from an intelligent female perspective. Sex and evolutionary psychology are the common thread in these compelling nested story lines -- our most primal urges filtered through a highly sophisticated cortex. Trine Erotic is one of a kind -- analytical, creative, seductive, profound... brilliant.
Love, Sex, Truth -- A Great Read.......2005-09-11
I loved Trine Erotic. If D.H. Lawrence had been a woman, if Virginia Woolf had lived today, they might have come up with something like this.
In Trine, Andrews explores the realm that is bounded by desire, more precisely the realm bounded by three desires: for love, for sex, for truth. It's like an erotic variation on the true, the beautiful, and the good. Love, sex, truth. Now there's a mythic landscape for you! And Andrews explores it compellingly. She is highly sensitive to nuance, highly sensitive to the shifting shades of truth and the shifting colors of desire. To top it off she writes deftly, with real artistry. A great read.
A Literary Triumph.......2005-05-21
This alluring green book is a triumph in the art of literature -- inventive, seductive, compelling, and nearly impossible to put down at all. Rarely do I read with such dedication, but "Trine Erotic" required my undivided attention, and got it. True literary feats are too rare these days, and Alice Andrews reminds us all that literature can, indeed, still matter, surprise, and in places, astound.
The Teaching Tales of Alice Andrews.......2005-05-08
Alice Andrews's "Trine Erotic" is one of those books that is so delicious you lose interest in your everyday obsessions. Like a gourmet pastry, the flavors of the story are layered and woven so that the narrative is a blend of texture and sensations impossible to distinguish as units that were ever apart from one another. Above, below, and behind the actions and thoughts of the characters are the theories of evolution's imperative of survival, the psychological propensities and mechanisms unique to each sex. It is how these mechanisms direct the psychology of the individual and group that an ever-broadening array of academics, including Andrews, are discussing.
Being a Milton Erickson sort of girl, I am always grateful when an author can so thoroughly distract me with a story so that I hardly know I'm learning; and this "Trine Erotic" does skillfully, engagingly and magically. I highly recommend allowing one's self to be seduced into the hypnotic trance that this story (stories) -- by way of exploring the primal response of one sex to the other -- provides a reader.
If you have ever wondered if your sexual behavior was being directed by something other than your personal will, if you have ever wondered why you seemed to be locked into a redundant call and response with your partner, "Trine Erotic" might give you some answers as it addresses these questions with the sharp eye of the scientific researcher and the compassionate heart of the storyteller.
Sharing Her Thought Process..........2004-04-07
I liked reading this book, as Ms. Andrews was brutally honest in sharing some of her thinking processes, or so it seemed! I related to quite a few points in the book, which scared me, as I thought some of my experiences with men or relationships were rare. Reading the book made me look at myself, & some of my choices, thoughts, etc. It was almost painful, but in a good way, like getting an infected tooth pulled! Ms. Andrews shows us that some of our impulsive or illogical behaviors are hard-wired instincts, rather than neurotic compulsions...whew! I am a single, middle-aged woman, so i don't know that someone of a different gender or age would have the same thoughts & feelings evoked by reading this. I must add I found certain parts amusing, like one part where a man comes up with an excuse (or a reason) for ending a relationship with the character that is so far fetched...yet probably true! I also found certain areas of the book to be explanatory in how females can relate to males, not just scientifically, but spiritually as well!

King Kirby.......2007-03-18
Jack Kirby was the King. He was the greatest and most powerful of all comic book artists. If you love comics and don't know Kirby, you owe it to yourself to explore his work -- much of which, thankfully, is available between book covers. There have been other great artists, but there was only one Kirby.

Nice book, better than Vol. 1, but not a "must have" since the images are way too known or used everywhere and the edition is nothing special or attractive.

Guided by Carole Bloom's so clear, so simple you'll-kick-yourself-for-not-doing-this-sooner instructions, you'll be on your way to making batches of some of the 90-plus treats found in TRUFFLES, CANDIES, AND CONFECTIONS in no time. Featuring Orange Chocolate Truffles, Vanilla Cream Caramels, Raspberry-Almond Squares, Espresso Hazelnut Fudge, and much more, this revised and expanded edition includes an updated introduction covering ingredients (buying and handling), equipment, techniques, ideas for packaging gifts, and the author's special, trademarked tasting chart. Using tools found in most kitchens (you don't even need a double boiler) and ingredients found at most grocery stores (including gourmet chocolate these days), you can start your own candy-making tradition. Don't waste another calorie on store-bought, mass-produced candylearn to make your own and never look back.
Customer Reviews:
Instructions Lack Detail.......2006-09-10
I've enjoyed making many of the recipes out of this book, but have found that the instructions lack detail and are sometimes inaccurate, requiring the reader to fill in the gaps. This is ok if you're willing to try out the recipe several times, inventing the instructions on your own.
Otherwise, the variety of recipes covers many candy-making genres, and the book is a good starting point for those getting into candy making.
What? No Fondants?.......2006-08-24
I feel that this cookbook is missing a couple of important candy genres. Although it does include two recipes for marzipan, a rare phenomenon in the world of American candy books, there is no mention of hard candies other than nut brittles, and perhaps even more surprisingly, there are no fondant recipes. I consider fondant to be one of the cornerstones of candymaking, and lovely though this book may be, I can't help but feel cheated by its misleadingly wide-ranging title. It does, however, boast an extensive section on truffles, and the technique chapter at the beginning of the book sports an exceptionally thorough and unique explanation of chocolate tempering and how one holds a temper. If you already have a collection of candy books that covers all the bases, ¨Truffles, Candies and Confections¨ is a nice addition. But if you're looking for an introduction to candy making in general, this is not it.
Candy Making at Home.......2005-04-22
For those who want to make candy in their kitchen at home, this book is the only game in town. In spite of some shortcomings, I do recommend it for the dedicated home cook. There are a number of older candy books, but are mostly out of print and date back 50 years or more; as such, they do not reflect current abilities or tastes. This book is the only complete one on confectionery I can think of published in recent years. This is a reprint of the original published in 1992.
This book does a good job of representing those candies that people want these days. When they think of confectionery, they mainly are thinking of chocolate truffles and clusters; consequently, the first half of the book is devoted to just that. The second half contains chapters on caramel, brittles and marzipan, fudge and nougat, and fruit. The recipe instructions are well described and easy to follow. The sections on ingredients, techniques, and equipment are also important, as these subjects in older candy books are out of date and mostly worthless.
There were some shortcomings, however. The description on tempering chocolate is brief, and leaves out many details. I object to the many ministrations that chocolate be put into the refrigerator. Many of the recipes in the second half call for hot sugar to be cooked to 240 degrees and beyond. This is the most dangerous thing in the kitchen to do (even more dangerous that deep-frying in oil), yet there are no instructions on how to do this safely. This subject by itself would need a section 3 or 4 pages by itself. There should also be more information on the difference between milk, white, and semi-sweet chocolates and the various brands.
Super candy book for everyone........2004-11-11
This is the best book that I have ever bought on candy making. It is clear and very easy to use--and the recipes are all my favorites. I really like the chocolate truffles that Carole does and the peanut brittle is the best I have ever had. I am going to make everything in this book, over and over again :).
Customer Reviews:
Every dog owner should have this book.......2002-08-11
"First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice.
It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over.
The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.
By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."
The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.
Literally, a life saver........2002-08-02
When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it. It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it. When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is. Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.

Book Description
The first monograph of Art Deco sculptor Ferdinand Preiss and the product of much diligent research. The only book to deal with Preiss' history in such immense detail. Showcases previously unpublished material and photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Worth waiting for!!.......2005-05-22
Ferdinand Preiss was one of the greatest, (if not the greatest) art deco bonze and ivory sculptors. His work sells for huge sums but despite this nobody has attempted to publish a book about him.....until now. Alberto Shayo has done a fine job. The book itself is a lavish production of full colour photographs of Ferdinands works. There is also a good biography of Preiss and his times (trying to operate as an artist in nazi Germany when not a party member).Shayo has carried out much research and really brings the artist to life. On the negative side, this is not a complete record of Preiss's works and the pieces are only given as illustrations, for example, there is little discussion of the different sculptures, variations or chronology. Anybody who is interested in art deco or naturalistic sculpture will really love this work.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Resource!!.......2003-08-01
Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.
Essential Resource.......2002-02-18
This is a terrific and necessary resource for anyone involved with the design or renovation of a child care setting. The author has clearly and concisely poured into the book her considerable knowledge and understanding of child care facilities, her passionate beliefs, and her attention to the details of good design. Her knowledge of child development is evident in all of her ideas.
The best.......2002-01-05
This must be the best book that exist about designing Child Care Center. It covers everything, but the most important is the focus the autor made on the children. This book is a must for every architect or people interested in design of this kind of buildings, specially if he/she is really interested in children well being.
The only but is that for the quality of its content, this book deserves a better paper and color pictures. (a 0 star here for MacGrow-Hill).
Probably this book is call to change the way a day care is seen today.
Long awaited, exceeds expectations.......2000-12-25
Preeminent authority on design for child care, Anita Rui Olds consummated a lifetime of deep concern and research into the needs of children with the publication of this magnum opus. Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.
More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." (from the introduction)
The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.
Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.

Graphics Alive
ASIN: 9063690797 |
Book Description
Most of what is written these days about young black men and women emphasizes incarceration and mortality rates, teen pregnancy, drug use, and domestic strife. This collection of sixteen autobiographical essays by African-Americans, Africans in America, Afro-Caribbean and biracial college students who have tackled significant obstacles to achieve success and degrees of self-understanding offers a broader, more hopeful portrait of the adolescent experiences of minority youth. Here are emotionally honest and reflective stories of economic hardship, racial bias, loneliness, and anger--but also of positive role models, spiritual awakening, perseverance, and racial pride.
In these essays, students explore the process of self-discovery and the realization of cultural identity. The pieces are accompanied by commentary from prominent African-American scholars, such as Jewelle Taylor Gibbs and Peter C. Murrell, Jr. Together they create a vivid portrait of what it is like to grow up as a black person in America, and offer a springboard to current debates about self-discovery, cultural identity and assimilation.
Often raw and painful, always honest and affecting, this collection of personal stories written by young people stands as an eloquent tribute to the courage of today's youth and to the power of their own words.

A wonder sociological study.......2001-02-02
This book is a very well-done sociological study of African American/bi-racial college students and the telling of their stories to get to this point in their lives. The stories are diverse yet similar. Bright, misunderstood, sticking out like sore thumbs because they were of color and intelligent. That is not the way it is supposed to be. Why is it African Americans are ridiculed for being smart. I read Kunjufu's book some years ago when my daughter was in middle school, Black Peer Pressure: To be Popular or Smart. Why must you choose. I am trying to remember my childhood experiences. I cannot remember being ridiculed for doing well in school. It seemed that was the norm for my group and the kids seem to have more respect for one another. I know this is unusual. I think about my brother who is now a well-known cardiologist in the Bay Area and when I look back on it, he must have felt isolated because he was one of those super-smart, gifted students. From the first story of Prince which was heart-wrenching. He was truly a testament to the poverty and hardship. He proved he could succeed against the oods. So, it is with Malik who had a drug-addicted mother. These young men's stories is in contrast to some of the more affluent of the group. Maria, Rob, and Steve had all of the amenities to have a good head start, well-eduacated, financially secure, and good neighborhoods. However I must say, I was disappointed that these students felt they had little in common with other black students because of their status. And it seemed their attitudes were reinforced by their parents attitudes who seemed to feel if it's white, its right. I am trying to reconcile these parents with the generation that had to strive for basic civil rights in housing and education. Where was the pride in being black. Why were they not going to black churches and putting their children in contact with other young black people with groups such as Jack and Jill or church youth groups? I always thought it was the generation these students that lost the black pride, not their parents who I guess are in their forties, fifties, and sixties. Claudio and Alessandro had to do with the problem of being both black and Latino and all the trials associated with being of a double culture. So often in Latin cultures, children are told they are Latino and then they get out into the world where no one will let them forget they are black. That can be a rude awakening when culture and color clash. The bi-racial students angst of being between two world, not knowing where they belong. This story was also very well told in "Black, White,Other" by Lise Funderburg. Christina and Susanna's black fathers evidently had problems with their black identities. It seems in these and many bi-racial families they do no discuss race, as if not talking about it, it won't be a problem. But as they find out, these issues need to be discussed. Sure these kind of parents say they just want their children to grow up to be good, healthy individuals, regardless of race. Not in America where race and race matters are so pervasive. The editors forewords before each chapter, Janie Victoria Ward and Tracy L. Robinson among them were provacative, intelligent studies. I would highly recommend this book to high school and college student of African descent as well as their parents and students of black sociology. Very well done.

Souls Looking Back is a thought-provoking, engaging and critical work that solidifies the validity of personal narrative as form of interpretive research with a focus on critical race theory. Anyone who may posses any questions regarding the power of such representation should read, ingest and reflect upon the stories of the young people presented in this book. The editors splendedly synthesized these educational and personal memoirs within the context of personal identity, critical race, critical feminist and critical race feminist perspectives. I would strongly recommend this book for all those with sincere interests in anthropology, sociology, psychology, African-American/African-Carribean/Afro-British studies, and education. This book truly exemplifies the multiplicity of lives our young people of color experience.
