Book Description
Originally published by Black Sparrow Press in 1975, and long out of print, The Vermont Notebook combines the writing of the American master John Ashbery with the ink drawings of Joe Brainard (1942-1994). This is Ashbery at his wacky best, from long lists that seem to make some sense, to short lists that seem to make no sense, to made-up diary entries. Here we find Joe Brainard's version of Americana. Combined, there is a wonderful innocence to this book that is found in the work of both of these artists. Joe Brainard's popularity is soaring to new heights as the traveling retrospective of his career captivates museum-goers throughout the United States, and this publication will be a valuable addition to the available publications of his work.

Book Description
Fleeing the sorcerous destruction of a long-lost city, Conan fights side-by-side with Valeria of the Red Brotherhood, that notorious and voluptuous she-pirate. Pursued by deadly spies and assassins, the Cimmerian and Valeria find themselves caught squarely in the front ranks of a bloody and savage war. But greater peril lurks in the shadow of a vast and forbidding mountain, where the Spirit Speaker wage occult battle with God-Men, who can read the future--and summon a Living Wind that consumes the soul even as it destroys the flesh.Even a sword powered by barbarian might is of little use against spirits, much less against great beings of the elder dark, but the final struggle for survival will come down ton....Conan and the Gods of the Mountain
Customer Reviews:
A poorly constructed Conan book.......2006-04-13
The writing is rather fun and lively with wit and good character development. You are easily sympathetic to the characters of the book. But plots holes take away some of the joy here. Something called the "Living Wind" features prominently in the book, isn't explained, shows up in the last two pages as a monster and is easily destroyed by a shaman leaving one to think "so what?!" The "god men" are never fully evolved, vague and almost irrelevent. Also, it takes a good half the book to get down to what it's about. Much too much time is spent with Conan roaming some tunnels. An average work.
Valeria returns.......2005-08-24
Green brings back Valeria, another of Conan's she-pirates, from the REH novelette Red Nails. The story takes place immediately after that adventure (one of Howard's best). It's a rousing trek through the jungle for Conan and Valeria as they try to reach the coast. Along the way they befriend a native tribe and battle the usual assortment of creatures and shamans. Roland Green did a good job with the jungle portions of Conan at the Demon's Gate and his skill with the genre makes me wish for a little Tarzan pastiche out of him. The battle with the Golden Serpent is one of the best Conan vs giant serpent encounters ever.
Green delivers good, solid fun........2003-03-08
Good characters, well developed intrigues and flashes of blood, sorcery and rampaging creatures. I'll definitely join Green for another Conan adventure.

Book Description
This is a sci-fi series about a spaceship convoy in search of habitable planets. When the aliens discover young Navee on a lush uninhabited planet, her resistance to mind-control and indomitable character make her dangerous, intriguing, and an ultimately, an ideal recruit for interplanetary missions. The artwork is vibrant, lush, and often meticulous in its representation of the intricacies of Navee's world. . . fun, thoughtful science fiction. -School Library Journal.

Book Description
In a remarkably poignant and topical story, Navee is pressed into service against a group of terrorists bombing at random throughout Wake! The group is an oppressed neglected people whose anger is beyond cooling but the victims they make are innocent... Morvan's conceptual and thematic sophistication is astonishing, the equal of, say, Alistair Reynolds's, and his talents are felicitously matched by Buchet's intricate, dense and amazingly harmonious and astonishing drawings. This series is a winner. --Asimov's
Book Description
Inaugurating a new format: 2 stories in one thick book! In a remarkably poignant and topical story, Navee is pressed into service against a group of terrorists bombing at random throughout Wake! The group is an oppressed neglected people whose anger is beyond cooling but the victims they make are innocent... In the second story, agents from Wake on mission on Hurumaru, a planet in medieval stage, are giving no sign of life. Navee, Bobo and three other special agents are sent to find them. They arrive in the middle of a war of liberation of the Escots. Lead by Princess Moneva, the rebels are summarily executing all who carry the logo of Wake: the sign of the demons!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Story........2006-08-05
Almost as good as the first book in the series. The inclusion of more charecters was good as was the plot twist at the end.
Two For One.......2004-07-09
Navee, the lone human amongst the countless aliens of Wake, is back in two of her toughest adventures. There is actually a scene overlap between the two stories to help cement the time frame of the second.
Sign of the Demons has Navee and other Wake agents looking into the disappearance of a previous team on a world ripe for contact. This world, much like Wake, has numerous races with the First Five being in charge of the others. Navee's quest teaches her about a downtrodden race, liberty and treachery. Then end is slightly unresolved concerning the fate of one of the characters but the resolution on the planet is quite satisfactory.
The second tale, (unreadable title), plays like a tribute to Mother Teresa. Navee's celebrity makes her a target of reactionaries trying to help the plight of their impoverished people. Their race is the majority on Wake but most live in shanty towns set up in garbage scows. One nun is working with them to try and improve the lot of at least a few. Navee tries to become a reactionary celebrity to help them. In the end she learns the lesson the nun had to learn long ago. A pretty good tale but I was a little unsure where the reactionaries were able to get their expensive supplies.
A good double-dose of space opera and humanity. A fine addition to the series and possible the strongest.
Great sci-fi story and artwork; lousy sense of politics.......2004-02-06
This is a really terrific French science fiction comic book ("graphic novel" if you prefer). Great artwork; terrific overall concept, characters, stories. I especially like the alien "SWAT team" that zip-cords in to rescue Navee; all the armored-up troopers each have extra arms, legs, tails, flippers, etc. Hilarious and cool at the same time.
This book contains two semi-separate episodes. Both are good stories, but Morvan (the writer) made what I think is a pretty repugnant decision for the second one. He created a race of oppressed aliens who become terrorists and then has Navee undergo a really cliched "liberal-guilt" experience--seeing children playing gutters, people rooting through garbage, etc--before coming to "understand their violence.".
The whole thing is a pretty thin facade for a statement on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the oppressed aliens supposed to be the Palestinians. Whatever one thinks of that real-world conflict, this sci-fi treatment of it is pretty crude. It all but directly says, "Poverty is a valid justification for brutal violence." Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Book Description
Roughly 6 to 8 million people in the United States alone are afflicted with fibromyalgia. A widespread muscular-skeletal syndrome, fibromyalgia touches people of all ages, male and female, as an unrelieved aching and burning pain, often accompanied by fatigue, that leaves its victims feeling exhausted.
Fibromyalgia inflects terrible wounds that leave no scars, and it is very difficult to treat. While drugs and pain suppressants are available, healthy food alternatives, including herbs and other natural foods, also help in combating the pain and exhaustion associated with the syndrome.
The Fibromyalgia Cookbook is designed to help those who suffer from this affliction to find relief from their discomfort. Focusing on natural foods and herbs, the authors emphasize pure foods with no additives, the lowest levels of toxins, and the greatest amount of nutritional value. The rules are few and basic: No red meat. No green peppers. No eggplant. Avoid heavy, starchy foods. The diet is low in sodium and low in fat, with no processed sugars. (Natural sweeteners such as honey and fruit are used.) No white flour (spelt flour and rice pasta are good substitutes). Soy butter, virgin olive oil, and flaxseed oil are suggested for salads. Many other satisfying possibilities are provided.
An introduction by Dr. Alison Bested explains the nature of fibromyalgia and the role of diet in finding relief from its symptoms. A glossary explains the strengths and dangers of specific foods. The 124 delicious recipes are divided into Soups, Salads, Veggies, Fibro-Fish Dishes, Dressings, Sauces and Dips, Fruit, Rice and Pasta, and Bread. COOKING; HEALTH 6 X 8, 172 PAGES PAPERBACK

I bought the book for a family member with Fibro who was nearly an invalid. The improvement was immediate and dramatic. She follows the diet guidelines in the book faithfully and now has her life back.
A DUD.......2006-08-07
I thought that this was going to be a cookbook with delicious and new recipes. It was a dud. There are no nutritional guidelnes, no ideas. It is not worth the money.
I enjoy this cookbook..........2006-03-08

Customer Reviews:
What A Great Book!.......2006-03-13
I really enjoyed reading this book. It truly exceeded my expectations. I would recommend it to just about anyone.
A Good Book but a Little Insensitive.......2005-01-28
The first reviewer is correct in saying that this is a very good book full of thrilling stories about firefighters which I have truly enjoyed.
However, I was surprised and disappointed in the story entitled, "A Weighty Matter", where a firefighter is justly concerned about how he is going to get a woman who weighs 75 lbs. more than he does out of a burning basement in a nightclub. That he is annoyed by this is understandable given that her life and his were in the balance.
His attitude towards her weight while human would have been better left out of the story, however. The other survivors and victims in this book were portrayed with compassion and respect while this terrified, overweight woman was not. The authors mentioned that the woman never came back to thank this firefighter. My guess is that she got out with her life but not with her dignity.
I am a great fan of firefighters and appreciate as much as any civilian can the dangers and uncertainties that they face every day. I can understand the firefighter's feeling the way he did about this woman and that he only joked with her to ease the tension. I can understand the comments he may have made about her size back at the firehouse where tension is released after the dangers faced every day. And mostly, he risked himself to save her life.
I just don't feel that his feelings and attitudes should have been published in this book. She deserves more respect than that.
Good book... the greatest? Doubtful..........2004-10-13
This is a very good book, especially for those who dream of becoming a firefighter. This does little to tell the actual stories of firefighters, however. It is more a collection of tales to thrill rather than to give insight. Any book by former firefighters such as Dennis Smith would be a better read for firefighters.

Baby Boomer Toys and Collectibles.......2007-01-10
A great trip down memory lane! Two chapters deal with my own fields of interest and still has a nice cross-section of different items for everyone. Great pics, good descriptions. I can't call it a coffee table book because it never gets to stay on the table. Every visitor picks it up and can't put down. Thanks for the memories!
CLASSIC Boomer toys - The one's I couldn't afford!.......2000-05-28
Forget the criticism - this is a great book stuffed with monsters, space toys plastics, kits - all the CLASSIC boomer stuff that the collectors go nuts for.
Not really indicative of Boomer toys as I remember them........1999-07-10
The book has some great photos of old toys but, they are not the type of toys I remember from my childhood. I was born in 1950. Maybe I just never had these toys in my toy box. As a collector of Boomer and 50's era toys..I was disappointed in the content of this book.

Baby Boomers Dolls Plastic Playthings of the 50's ^ 60's Second Edition.......2007-07-27
Great book filled with products and information that is helpful in identifying "old" items. fun to look at and has beautiful pictures.
bring on the memories!.......2007-01-23
a great book for those researching dolls of the fifties and early sixties. i could almost smell the new doll scent as i was carried back to those christmases many years ago. quite a little trip for so little money!
Good Reference Book for Us 50's Kids.......2006-03-02
I found a wealth of information in this book about dolls from the smaller companies and on Mattel's budding doll line. I even found a few I had as a child but have not seen in other books and had not been able to ID until now. A lot of doll accessories are included for specific dolls that are not usually seen unless you have an old ad or catalog /booklet for that doll. This is a good addition to any collector's library and nicely showcases the dolls and girl toys of the era many of us think was the best of American dolls .
Teri Lee Teri lee.......2006-01-31
This book is good but VERY lacking in pictures of some of the more desirable dolls like Tiny Betsy McCall - not one picture!
Ditto with many other dolls. Teri Lee gets about 6 pages, most other dolls and manufacturers get 2 pages and sometimes NO pictures. Way out of proportion! I was disappointed at the unbalanced coverage, even though the book was very nice.

Customer Reviews:
Oh, the fond memories this book brings back!.......2007-03-11
Reading this book was truly a passage back in time for me. As I was growing up, I played with so many of the toys listed in this book. The Slinky, Lincoln logs, the Spirograph, Cootie, Mousetrap, Etch a Sketch, Mr. Potato Head, Gumby and Pokey, Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots, Twister, Tinkertoys, Frisbees and the Hula Hoop all passed through my hands. With a large number of children my age in the neighborhood, the toys I didn't have were often owned by others. Therefore, reading this book brought back very fond memories of playing with Clive, Sandy, Dale, Rick, Paul, Terry, Cindy and all the other kids who grew up with toys that you physically manipulated. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a background similar to mine.
Truly The 100 Greatest Baby Boomer Toys !.......2000-07-26
This 208 page, softbound walk-through-the-past volume features 250 full color, very large, sharp photos that are a joy to behold. I enjoyed looking at the photos and reading each comprehensive write-up. A real memory jogger. I was quite surprised at the number of these things I actually owned as a child, and welcomed seeing them again in life-like color. Even many of the boxes are shown. There's plenty of interesting text accompanying the photos and year 2000 values. The toys run from Easy Bake Ovens, Slinky, Cootie, Thingmakers, Lincoln Logs, and Spirographs to Tootsietoys, Monster Kits, Pez, Colorforms, Life-Size Kitchens, Gilbert, Renwal Doll Stuff and Captain Kangaroo. You'll really enjoy seeing some of these toys you haven't thought of in years. I have many books on baby boomer collectibles, and this one ranks among the best. Get it and enjoy !
IT'S THOUGHT PROVOKING - AND IT'S EYE CANDY.......2000-05-26
No generation is so defined by its toys as the Baby Boomers. They loved them as kids. They collect them as adults. 100 GREATEST BOOMER TOYS explores the phenomenon. It's fun and it's serious.
First the fun. The books got hundreds of great pictures. It's like a Christmas catalog. Look up old favorites. Discover items you'd forgotten.
And there's a ranking system which seems pretty much designed to provoke arguments. Wait until you see who's #1!
More substantially there are short essays on many of the toys. Little studies in anthropology, in social history, they tell us about the 50's and 60's. The tie-in of G.I. Joe and the draft is, I think, very apt and really well done.
Once you pick it up, you will be drawn in.

Very complete. Nice photos and desciptions.......2001-12-29
To try to fit all the Baby Boomer dolls in one book would be impossible. This book gives a good overview about dolls from this time. Good pictures, lots of company info. In its second printing so that should say something right there. My favorites were the TV related dolls like Jeannie and Pebbles and Bamm Bamm.
Uneven Coverage--Except for Terri Lee, Slights the 1950s.......2001-09-30
This was strong on Terri Lee dolls (9 pages) and on Mattel (13 pages). Though 16 pages were devoted to Madame Alexander, I felt that just two small pictures of "Cissy" were not enough; and there were no pictures of the Winnie or Binnie Walker dolls. Most of the MA coverage was of the child-dolls and Alexanderkins.
There were only two pages devoted to "Ginny"--and there were no pictures of Ginny with painted eyes, molded lashes, or bent knees. All were of the painted-lash version.
Karl offers less than 1 column (about 100 words!) on the prolific and highly collectible Virga dolls, offering no pictures at all.
The quality of the pictures is excellent, and this is a nicely produced book. But I feel that it does not offer full enough coverage, especially of the hard plastic dolls of the 1950s, to be considered a comprehensive guide.
An awesome book great pictures and reference.......2000-10-12
If you collect dolls of the 50s and 60s you should buy this book. It has hundreds of full color photos with descriptions and prices. It's a great reference guide. I enjoyed looking at so many of the dolls I grew up with.

"Cheeky," "saucy," "randy," and a variety of other British euphemisms can be employed when describing the works of Archie Dickens. An Englishman from the old school, his fondness for lovely young innocents in not-so-innocent situations has delighted pin-up enthusiasts throughout the world for several generations. "The facts of urban life presented here are in their starkest form," Richard Wright wrote in the original foreword to this penetrating study of Chicago's South Side, first published in 1945. "To have them presented otherwise would have been to negate the humanity of the American Negro." Nearly 50 years later, sociologist William Julius Wilson wrote that Black Metropolis "allows us to consider the significance of a segregated community heavily populated with working poor adults in contrast with a segregated community largely populated with nonworking adults." Simply put, sociologist St. Clair Drake and researcher Horace Cayton produced one of the most comprehensive studies of an African American urban enclave ever written. As in W.E.B. Du Bois's groundbreaking treatise The Philadelphia Negro, the contradictions and complexities of the Afro-American experience are expertly articulated without Eurocentric bias. Using traditional scientific methods of analysis, Cayton and Drake show the existence of a racial color line that keeps blacks segregated in economics, education, and politics, creating a vital cultural city within a city. More importantly, though, Black Metropolis makes the South Side come to life, with Drake and Cayton's hilarious, idiomatic references to the areas' many social groups--from the clothes-conscious, number-running "Upper Shadies" and the respectable "Race Men" of "Bronzeville" to the hypocritical "jackleg" preachers--and their richly detailed explanations of such phenomena as "passing" and the black Chicago community's interactions with white-led organized crime. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
Ground-breaking when first published in 1945, Black Metropolis remains a landmark study of race and urban life. Based on a mass of research conducted by Works Progress Administration field workers in the late 1930s, it is a historical and sociological account of the people of Chicago's South Side, the classic urban ghetto. Drake and Cayton's findings not only offer a generalized analysis of black migration, settlement, community structure, and black-white race relations in the early part of the twentieth century, but also tell us what has changed in the last hundred years and what has not. This edition includes the original Introduction by Richard Wright and a new Foreword by William Julius Wilson.
"Black Metropolis is a rare combination of research and synthesis, a book to be deeply pondered. . . . No one who reads it intelligently can ever believe again that our racial dilemma can be solved by pushing buttons, or by gradual processes which may reach four or five hundred years into the future."—Bucklin Moon, The Nation
"This volume makes a great contribution to the building of the future American and the free world."—Louis Wirth, New York Times
"By virtue of its range, its labor and its insight, the book seems certain to become a landmark not only in race studies but in the broader field of social anthropology."—Thomas Sancton, New Republic

A Classic.......1999-12-10
Black Metropolis is perhaps the founding document of African-American studies, a classic work of sociology that still resonates today. It is a paradigmatic expression of the Chicago School of sociology, however, a school that today stands in some disrepute, at least in some circles. Indirectly, it was the target of James Baldwin's famous attack on Richard Wright in his essay, Everybody's Protest Novel. The claim of the criticism has been that the Chicago School, due to its insistance upon using a "scientific approach", merely reproduces the very terms under which African-Americans have been oppressed--a claim that has proceeded under the warrant of European intellectuals such as Theodor Adorno. Still, Black Metropolis is a landmark study, and, unfortunately, many if not most of its observations and conclusions remain true today, and in fact it could be argued that conditions in the Black Belt of Chicago have gotten worse, not better, since 1945, the year of Black Metropolis' publication--which lends a certain credence to the criticisms mentioned above, though perhaps it should be qualified by saying that they are not so much criticisms of the Chicago School as they are criticisms of American society. Since then, as we know, we have witnessed a great shift in American public opinion away from what some consider to be the excesses of those days; so much so, in fact, that the work of Black Metropolis may again be regarded as a profoundly useful book. Embodying American liberalism as it does--which counted as a grave sin thirty years ago--Black Metropolis may possibly be due for a fresh look.
Book Description
Stemming from his anthropological field work among black religious groups in Philadelphia in the early 1940s, Arthur Huff Fauset believed it was possible to determine the likely direction that mainstream black religious leadership would take in the future, a direction that later indeed manifested itself in the civil rights movement. The American black church, according to Fauset and other contemporary researchers, provided the one place where blacks could experiment without hindrance in activities such as business, politics, social reform, and social expression. With detailed primary accounts of these early spiritual movements and their beliefs and practices, Black Gods of the Metropolis reveals the fascinating origins of such significant modern African American religious groups as the Nation of Islam as well as the role of lesser known and even forgotten churches in the history of the black community.
In her new foreword, historian Barbara Dianne Savage discusses the relationship between black intellectuals and black religion, in particular the relationship between black social scientists and black religious practices during Fauset's time. She then explores the complexities of that relationship and its impact on the intellectual and political history of African American religion in general.

Important study in sociology/anthropology of Black Church.......1999-02-07
This book is extremely important in that it gives a full perception of "newer," or less traditional African American bodies which made a significant impact on the black religious experience. Arthur Huff Fauset (1899 - 1983?) was a novelist and anthropologist whose interest in the Black Church may have stemmed from the fact that his father was an A.M.E. minister, even though he died when Fauset was an infant. His mother was white and a Christian convert of Jewish heritage (Fauset, 1971, 127). He was a member of a literary family: his older sister, Jessie Redmond Fauset (1884-1961), was a novelist and poet, and was considered "the most prolific of the Renaissance writers of the genteel school" by Calvacade magazine. Arthur Huff Fauset's 1944 book, Black Gods of the Metropolis: Negro Religious Cults in the Urban North, provides a glimpse of five black religious bodies: the Mount Sinai Holy Church of America, Inc.; the United House of Prayer for All People; Church of God (Black Jews); the Moorish Science Temple of America; and the Father Divine Peace Mission Movement. These were chosen because they were "among the most important and best-known cults of their respective types, and hence among the most representative" (Fauset, 1971, 10). Using participant observation, he presents their origin, a portrait of their respective leader and/or founder, their organizational forms, and an explanation of their practices and rituals. He was a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and was further prepared by studying folklore "extant among Blacks in Philadelphia, British West Indies, Nova Scotia and in the South" in 1931. His master's thesis, "Folklore From Nova Scotia," was the first collection of black folklore in Canada (Fauset 1971, 127). Other books included accounts of Sojourner Truth and a biographical account of the American Negro. He was a contributor of many essays, short stories, articles and book reviews to Crisis and Opportunity. He also wrote several novels, including African Lament on Shaka, King of the Zulus. According to the biographical account, Fauset was involved in "militant civil rights activism." His friends included Alain Locke, W. E. B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Paul Robeson, and A. Philip Randolph. This lead to work as the editor of the Philadelphia edition of Powell's newspaper, The People's Voice. He was also honorably discharged from the Army just before being commissioned during World War II due to his prior civil rights activities (Fauset 1971, 128). In the introduction to the 1971 edition of the book, John Szwed states that Fauset's book is important because it gives a heretofore unavailable description of the practices and beliefs of blacks in the United States: The beginning point for understanding any religious institution is at least elementary knowledge of its practices and beliefs. But it is a sad fact that we have better descriptions -- incomplete as they are -- of religious beliefs and practices in West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean than we have of those of black people in the United States. And it is in this respect that Black Gods of the Metropolis is a singularly important book. Fauset, in writing one of the first books of urban American ethnography, took very seriously the culture of the Negroes of North America. (Fauset, 1971, v) Fauset (1971, 107-108) concluded that African Americans' "over-emphasis ... in the religious sphere" was related to the comparatively meager participation of blacks in other institutional forms of American culture, the result of racial discrimination which forbade black participation in mainstream society. Thus, the one institution with which blacks are closely identified was a form of cultural, spiritual, physical and leadership expression. He maintained that blacks were attracted to cults because they offered both spiritual nurture and freedom to control their own destinies through businesses, politics, social reform and social expression. He also surmised that the personal charisma of the leader was an important factor in attracting members, that the cults had rigid taboos "over certain features of the private lives of its members, frequently reaching into the most intimate details of their lives." Sexual inhibitions were of ultimate importance in most of the cults he studied. He also found that the literal adherence to the Bible as a guide lessened as the programs of the cult became focused upon social, economic and political uplift.
Book Description
Pushing the traditional boundaries of the Harlem Renaissance to new frontiers, Baldwin identifies a fresh model of urban culture rich with politics, ingenuity, and entrepreneurship.
Customer Reviews:
Delivers a punch!.......2007-05-04
From its opening pages, Chicago's New Negroes delivers a knockout punch. Baldwin opens his monograph with a retelling of Jack Johnson's 1910 heavyweight victory and its impact on Black Chicago, and thus only begins to weave an epic and compelling tapestry that demonstrates how Black people "acted" rather than were "acted upon." He resituates ideas once limited to discussions of the Harlem Renaissance and moves them geographically to Great Migration-era Chicago. There, dots are connected to demonstrate the very tangible relationship between consumer culture and intellectual life.
To the reader's delight, Baldwin resists the tendency to provide a straightforward "history" of African Americans in Chicago in the early twentieth century. While the text does follow the stories and innovations of such major players as Madame CJ Walker, Thomas A. Dorsey, Oscar Micheaux and baseball's Rube Foster, it also provides a much needed space in which we get to hear the thoughts and words of everyday people, those who sat in beauty parlors, enjoyed the early years of cinema, attended sporting events, and made a way despite the racial, social and economic limitations. We soon determine that southern migrants to Chicago brought with them not country ways, but entirely new, entirely modern, ways of thinking.
For authors, allowing everyday people to speak for themselves is sometimes difficult. Yet, Baldwin manages to make these voices heard and it is a credit to his writing style. His presentation is especially adept in the sports chapter. Here, Baldwin takes the reader on a tour of Black Chicago's various "playgrounds." We have no problem envisioning the juking, the fakes, the fast forwards, the trucking, the passing and dribbling and their possible meanings for building a better world.
Through chapters devoted to the "mapping" of the Black Metropolis, beauty culture, film exhibition and filmmaking, the rise of gospel music and the sporting life, Baldwin allows a glimpse into a world of possibility, a world where popular culture is just as, if not more, worthy of study as so-called arts and letters. He forces a new understanding of even the Harlem Renaissance, an ambitious project for sure. While the book is a scholarly monograph, Baldwin's forays into social and cultural theory are so nuanced as to make the book accessible to a wider audience. And for that we should be thankful. Even though the urgent and triumphant stories within Chicago's New Negroes take place seventy five or a hundred years ago, the lessons we learn from them and the hope we take with us when we close the book are timeless. And are even more so in an era when Black culture is appropriated, diffused, and often taken for granted.
