Book Description

Characterized as "the African Voltaire," Ahmadou Kourouma garnered enormous critical and popular praise upon the 1998 release of his third novel, En attendant le vote des bêtes sauvages. Kourouma received the Prix des Tropiques, among other prestigious prizes, for that book, and the French edition went on to sell 100,000 copies.

Carrol F. Coates's translation, Waiting for the Vote of the Wild Animals, introduces English-language audiences to Kourouma's irreverent view of the machinations of the African dictators who played the West against the East during the thirty years of the cold war. Profiting from western financial support, the dictators built palaces, shrines, and hunting preserves for their personal gratification as they paraded about with numerous mistresses, marabouts, and advisers. In the style of a sèrè who sings the praises of the thirty-year career of the master hunter and president Koyaga (a fictionalized Gnassingbé Eyadema of Togo) readers are treated to a brief overview of the French colonization of the "Naked people," hunters in West African mountain country, followed by the account of Koyaga's assumption of power through treachery, assassination, and sorcery. In an interview Kourouma noted the Togolese assumption that if the people did not turn out to vote for Eyadema in the democratic elections following the cold war, the wild animals would come out of the forest to vote for him. The novel ends with an apocalyptic stampede, although the animals are probably fleeing a bush conflagration rather than running to the polls.

4 out of 5 stars Post-Colonial West Africa's Sad Story.......2005-05-08

First, it must be noted that this Francophone novel has two different English translations: one by Frank Wynne (published by Heinemann in the UK), and one by Carrol Coates (published by the Univ. Press of Virginia in the US). I borrowed both from the library and read the first ten pages of each to determine which to proceed with. I found the Wynne translation to be far more readable, and perhaps equally importantly, the typesetting of the Coates edition is atrocious, far too dense and hard to read. Therefore, although the basic content of the two versions is the same, my comments are based on the Wynne/UK edition of the book. However, the Coates edition does have a brief and informative afterword that's worthwhile.

This is the third of Kourouma's novels to appear in English, following The Suns of Independence and Monnew. Taken together, the three books form a full-bodied portrait of West Africa from the time of colonialism up to the present. (His latest book, Allah is Not Obliged, is about a child soldier in Liberia). Here, the story is told through a traditional storyteller/praise singer engaged by Koyaga, president for life of a fictional West African nation. The storyteller and his fool apprentice are to tell the president's life story, warts and all, over the course of a six-day ritual, for a reason not revealed until the final pages. The tale that emerges is a wicked satire of post-colonial African despotism. Like many writers, Kourouma has fictionalized the targets of his outrage, although those familiar with modern African history will be able to spot Sékou Touré (Guinea), King Hassan II (Morocco), Bokassa (CAR), Houphonouet-Boigny (Cote d'Ivoire), and Mobutu Sese Seko (Zaire) amongst the various leaders Koyaga visits for advice in one lengthy section. Born in and exiled from Cote d'Ivoire, Kourouma lived in France, Cameroon, Algeria, and Togo, and has modeled Koyaga on the Togolese dictator Gnassingbé Eyadema (who died earlier this year and was succeeded by his son following some very dubious elections in April).

Koyaga's life story is mostly as one would expect, mythical beginnings, leading to a distinguished career in the French colonial armies serving in Vietnam (as Kourouma himself did), leading to the inevitable military coup, oceans of offspring, and lifelong rule. And, as anyone who follows Africa could guess, there's plenty of corruption, torture, and tragedy to follow, all backed by the Western powers seeking to win the Cold War. And when the Cold War ends, and Koyaga is confronted by demands for Structural Adjustment Programs and the like, he must scramble to keep the disaffected youth from joining with returned elite exiles to overthrow his rule. Kourouma is clearly angry and bitter at what Africa became after independence, and he does yeoman work in bearing witness to this without ever becoming strident or editorial. The main flaw is that it is a rather lengthy work (there is a long section which digresses into the life of Koyaga's right-hand man), and can be a bit exhausting. Yet it remains a great deal more readable than a much African fiction in translation. Those with a strong interest in modern African literature will obviously want to check it out, and anyone with a strong interest in Togo should have a look as well.

4 out of 5 stars A Political Parable of Postcolonial Africa.......2001-04-20

This 1998 work by French-speaking Africa's premier novelist is a vehemently outspoken satire of despotic and corrupt African regimes from the 1960s to the 1990s. It's the life story of Koyaga, dictator and "founding father" of the fictitious West African state called the Republique du Golfe. Koyaga's history is recounted over the course of a "donsomana," a six-night storytelling by a hunters' bard, and the novel reflects this in its six-part form, interspersed with asides and proverbs drawn from the author's Malinke roots.

Koyaga himself is an interesting and contradictory character, despite remaining rather underdeveloped as the author concentrates on his political rather than personal life. He's a military strongman who took power through innumerable assassinations and acts of brutality. But Koyaga isn't portrayed as evil--in fact he seems to be beloved by his countrymen, at least those who aren't constantly trying to kill him. The reader is introduced to and immersed in the perspective of the African tyrant, one who after three decades in power has begun to believe his own self-serving propaganda.

The most interesting sections of "Waiting for the Vote" are those depicting Koyaga's visits to his fellow African dictators. Here the novelist gives us very thinly disguised versions of autocratic regimes of days gone by--Sekou Toure's Guinea, Felix Houpouet-Boigny's Cote d'Ivoire, Bokassa's Central African Empire, Mobutu's Zaire, and even the Morocco of King Hassan II. Each of these leaders lets Koyaga in on his own secrets to maintaining power, and gives him fatherly advice on preserving his own grip. We see otherwise kindly and respected statesmen who jail and torture their own friends, just to be sure of their loyalty. We see presidents who make no distinction between personal and public wealth; it's all theirs for the taking. And we see wily survivors who outwit countless threats to their rule and their lives, clinging to power in the face of tremendous opposition at home and abroad. Koyaga takes all their lessons to heart and becomes a master of the game of political survival.

All this makes for great commentary, but how does fit into a novel? In presenting these images, "Waiting for the Vote" loses some of its narrative punch. The reader, if she's been reading the papers at all over the last decade, already knows how things are going to come out. We know that the 1990s will usher in a wave of "democratization" and "transparent government" in Africa, curbing (though not ending) the continent's autocratic excesses. But along the way we get a rare insight into what it's like to be a dictator, to have an entire nation singing your praises while simultaneously resenting you and, time after time, trying to assassinate you.

With such keen observations of the modern African political scene, why must Kourouma resort to putting his fictional gloss on actual events? Why not simply come out with a collection of trenchant essays? The likely answer is that if he were to describe Houphouet-Boigny or King Hassan II the same way he describes their fictionalized stand-ins, his books would likely be banned in those countries where he'd most want them to be read. "Waiting for the Vote" gets as close as it can to political expose without quite crossing that line into dangerous territory.

4 out of 5 stars Fast moving hard science........2006-10-08

I don't read a lot of science fiction, and what I have read was mostly Azimov-era adventure type stories with little hard science. This book was bought on a whim and turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It's an easy and entertaining read with enough science to keep the purists happy, judging by the other reviews. Definitely a worthwhile book, but maybe a tad predictable.

4 out of 5 stars Same Universe as Cold As Ice, Different Feel.......2003-09-23

It's five years after the Great War that killed nine billion people in the Solar System, but violence hasn't ceased. It's just returned to the traditional forms of individual murder for profit and paranoia.

The targets in question are haldane Lola Belman, a therapist trained in the aracana of the mathematical underpinnings of the brain, psychotropic drugs, and medicine, and her patient who seems to be suffering a severe bout of false memories.

Unlike its prequel _Cold As Ice_, there are not a lot of neat scientific concepts here. The plot is not driven by scientific exploration and corporate and political intrigue but mostly by the suspense of the characters trying to figure out things the reader knows already, specifically who's trying to kill them and why. And those characters are generally a more interesting lot than those in the earlier novel. The only overlap in the cast is with the best character: the Bat, an obese and extremely private genius who delights in solving all sorts of puzzles from scheduling conflicts in the spaceship transportation network to murder. Here we see him twenty years earlier in his career.

Essentially, if you like a good, suspenseful science fiction tale with a bit of hard science, this novel is for you. Sheffield has created, in these books, a universe of adventure, discovery, and intrigue about 90 years in the future. Each stands alone, and the books can be read in any order.

3 out of 5 stars Sheffield is tough, but I'm tougher........2002-07-31

This is a good book and an easy read. And I did enjoy it. But I want more. I was not as challended by this book as I could have been. I love stories about colonization and terraforming without aliens and this book is in that category. About halfway into it you are feeling great and reading standing up, and then you get to the second half. I was really excited as I already read Cold as Ice and was anxious to learn about the origin of Sheffield's universe. This book did that but not much more. Not only are the dates hard to fathom, the ages are too. Is there an event that stimulates scientific development at such a rapid pace? At 16, Bat is much too young to be so eccentric. The source of his knowledge, his income, even his culinary skills are not explained. I wanted to know more about how the Bat became the Bat.
That aside. It is a good read but not exceptional. Some exciting moments. A nice book for summer that gives you somthing to think about, as the question is just how long is living forever and would you really want to. And the ethical question does not seem to come up when talking about your brain living forever. What is the big mystery plot of the Ganymede Club? It is not addressed until the very end and then it is not complete. Who are the other members? Should we be looking for them in a future Sheffield series? And why is it so hard to find Helene since they took out a lease on it? Were the records lost in the Great War? Have Bat find them. And just who was that girl on Mars? There are too many gaps in the story. But it is still an enjoyable read. A few mild sexual references, some violence, no profanity.

4 out of 5 stars Good, hard sci-fi!.......2002-03-14

This is one of the better science fiction books I've read in a long time. It weaves alien symbiosis, Solar System-wide war, personality transference, and psychiatric sleuthing into a great whodunit. It's marred only by the unreasonable choice of setting it in the period A.D. 2040 to 2070. It took me half of the novel to put that in the back of my mind. A.D. 2340 would have been more appropriate. Other than that, it was an outstanding read. I don't think they come any better than Sheffield.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were varied, the plot intriguing and the writing was clear and literate.

The best tasting recipes all seem to begin with sauteing onions and garlic then adding the rest of the recipe. This is a great way to make tasty bean recipes.

Pressure cooking may be the best and fastest way to cook beans, where beans don't have to be soaked and salt and other acidic ingredients can be added during cooking which greatly enhances the flavor. 5 out of 5 stars Pay Attention!.......2007-07-20

That seems to be the main message George Alston is giving. Pay attention to your dog, the judge, the ring conditions, and your competition. He gives great advice on how to adjust your stride, the leash, your grooming, etc. to give your dog the best opportunity to win. He also includes wonderful chapters on Psychology and Ring Etiquette, something that can make or break the handler - not just the dog. He shows showing as the art, not just the mechanics.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for a Show Dogs Library.......2007-01-18

When I spoke to my dogs breeder, her comment was that I needed this book. I was happy to tell her I had already ordered and read it! She is a veteran and reads it every Spring before she steps into the Show Ring to brush up on things. I found it to be very helpful as a beginner and I've found it even more helpful after I've been in the ring a couple of times. It leaves out a lot of the "fluff" but is a great companion book to some of the others that start out at the very beginning. Very easy to read. Confidence builder!

4 out of 5 stars The Winning Edge:Show Rings Secrets by George Alston.......2006-12-08

Haven't been showing dogs for long so I was looking for any pointers to polish up my act. This book was great I read it from start to finish and about to turn around and do it again. Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!!

The beautiful polished black and polychrome pottery of Santa Clara Pueblo is rivaled in design and execution only by that of its neighbor, San Ildefonso, among the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. In recent years it has been sought by growing numbers of collectors and investor.

Santa Clara Pottery Today combines extensive historical research with the interviews granted by three Santa Clara potters. During the interviews, the author recorded and photographed each step—from clay pit to market—in the making of contemporary Santa Clara pottery. Collecting and preparing the clay, making slips and paints, modeling various kinds of vessels, sanding, smoothing, slipping, polishing, decorating, firing—all are described and illustrated so thoroughly that the reader can experiment with the Santa Clara techniques himself if he wishes.

Drawing on a variety of published and unpublished sources, the author also provides background on the evolution of Santa Clara pottery and identifies changes that have occurred in materials and techniques.

Describes all steps in making contemporary pottery in Santa Clara Pueblo, NM.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Ornaments (Christmas Remembered, Bk. 10).......2007-06-12

Timeless Ornaments was a must have for me when I saw the breathtaking set of Night Before Christmas ornaments. I had to stitch them for my tree, which I am still doing, one by one. There is also mistletoe, holly, trees and elves; a paper doll teddy bear ornament set, snowmen and a beaded nativity set. The santas are again awesome, as in the other Christmas Remembered books. If you think as I do, that ornaments are the "just right" size project to take along in a busy life, then you'll think this book is the best of the series. The charts are beautiful and easy to stitch from, and the projects range from country to Victorian including all skill levels.

The art of setting, compiling, or combining disparate objects is a difficult art. Yet it has become the chic new decorating style in France, and is now spreading throughout the world. After the success of The New Eighteenth-Century Style, journalist Michèle Lalande and photographer Gilles Trillard team up once again to showcase the most successful combinations of treasured heirlooms and contemporary design.

From precious mundane objects like seashells and glass bottles to priceless works of master craftsmanship like candelabras and carved wooden chests, The New French Décor provides insight into the blend of sophistication, symmetry, confusion, and minimalism that makes each of these rooms successful. Beautifully photographed by Trillard, these rich designs, conceived and executed by top stylists, decorators, and antiquarians, delight the eye on each page with a brilliant patchwork of old and new.

5 out of 5 stars War of California is smart and funny.......2001-12-18

This is an excellent book that fits somewhere between a picture book and a novel. The paintings are beautiful and very funny and the writing is incredibly imaginative and hilarious. It tells the story of a fictional war between Los Angeles and California but its real point seems to be the skewering of many contemporary social issues about California today, from arguments about which city leads in cultural aspects to politics, racial problems, immigration, Hollywood and the movie industry, and on and on. The back section contains all the critical reviews to put the work into art historical perspective and its quite interesting as well, and you don't need to have studied art to get it.
Get this book and pour over the pictures, read the text, and then put in the CD. Its an over the top production featuring interviews with surviors, sounds of battle, music, historical analysis, and even drive-time radio traffic reports from the middle of the battles!! The price is worth the CD alone.
A perfect gift and relevent to anyone, not only Californians but Americans as well with its skewering of the Civil War.
I bought every copy in my store!!!
                    Loved it!!!

                      Book Description

Top African-American Studies scholars examine the history and reception of The Bondwoman's Narrative, the slave narrative that, since its discovery, has changed how we view antebellum literature.

Two years ago, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. discovered an unpublished manuscript, The Bondwoman's Narrative, By Hannah Crafts, A Fugitive Recently Escaped From North Carolina, which turned out to be the first novel by a female African-American slave ever found, and possibly the first novel written by a black women anywhere. The Bondwoman's Narrative was published in 2002.

In Search of Hannah Crafts now brings together twenty-two authorities on African-American history, including Nina Baym, Jean Fagan Yellin, William Andrews, Lawrence Buell, Karen Sanchez-Eppler, and Shelley Fisher-Fishkin to examine such issues as authenticity and the history and criticism of this unique novel.

The Bondwoman's Narrative will take its place in the African-American canon. In Search of Hannah Crafts is the book that scholars and students of African-American Studies, of women writers, and of slavery will need to understand this unprecedented historical and literary event.
