Book Description

Way Under Contract uses black comedy to address a very serious issue: over development in the sunshine state. Although the story takes place on a fictitious barrier island in Southwest Florida, over development is effecting nearly every community in the United States.

The setting? Shoreside Island Realty, which is an office like any other. There is a young sweet receptionist, an ice cold sales manager (often referred to as the "form nazi"), and numerous real estate agents on the make for the "deal of the century." Meet sleazy Jason Randazzle, who thrives on using tasteless sales tactics in order to get a listing, or Linda Hinckle who find herself painting by numbers in order to close a sale, or Adam Bartlett, the multi-million dollar producer who gets caught up with the underhanded developers of the Sanderling project. Meet their clients, obsessive Mildred Lee, who had been tracking every tropical depression just waiting for "The One," or Mr. Grinstead, who engages in a personal battle with his home's termites while his wife sits in a psychiatric hospital or the Hazeltons, who held "PhD's in how to look at houses by never find one to actually purchase." There are numerous other characters who you will love, hate and die laughing at as you watch their lies and schemes unfold in the face of Emily, a category five hurricane. In the final chapter, "God Bats Last," Emily puts all the lies and deception into proper perspective.

While Way Under Contract is a work of fiction, what has happened to Florida's wildlife is not. Forced by bulldozers to retreat in silence, they search for anyplace to call home. With the purchase of this book, you can help. $1.00 of the proceeds from Way Under Contract is donated to the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) for land aquisition. Collectively, we can make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars A humorous story exposing the real estate world!.......2004-03-15

I'm a realtor and this book nailed the multitude of personalities, motivations, and quirky characters that inhabit the real estate world. From the legal forms we routinely deal with (and often don't understand ourselves), to the greed, selfishness, and foibles of buyers, sellers, investors, and lawyers -- this book covers it all. The descriptions of what can go wrong in a real estate transaction are barely far fetched at all. Any realtor who's been around the block a few times will find familiar stories in this book. The author's apt descriptions are funny and right on the mark. Ultimately though this is a story about redemption, learning to care about the world around us, and understanding our limited place in the universe.
I give this book a "thumbs way up."

4 out of 5 stars Way Under Contract- a Sanibel story.......2001-11-25

I took this book with me on a business trip last spring. I could not put it down. I think it is a wonderful tale of the life of the real estate crowd on Sanibel. I loved reading a story about a place close to my home and close to my heart.

Book Description

Young veterinarian Rachel Goddard's world begins to crumble when a client rushes into the animal hospital with a basset hound struck by a car during a thunderstorm. The dog owner's terrified tot, drenched with rain, loses sight of her mother in the flurry of activity and screams, "Mommy! I want Mommy!" Instantly Rachel is hurled back in time to a day in her own childhood when her baby sister Michelle uttered the same cry while thunder crashed and rain poured down on them. The unearthed memory feels like a fragment from a nightmare, and Rachel doesn't understand its meaning or the anguish it stirs up in her.

When she seeks answers she learns nothing from Michelle or from Judith, their loving but manipulative mother. Judith is a psychologist who is only too happy to have her adult daughters still living in her elegant Tudor house outside Washington, DC. But their apparently serene home is a house of secrets where Judith's unspoken rules forbid questions about the family history or the daughters' long-dead father. As more baffling memories surface, Rachel begins to suspect that nothing about her family is what it seems. Fighting her mother's attempts to control her, Rachel embarks on a quest that takes her deep into her own memory as well as halfway across the country. The heartbreaking truth she uncovers will shatter her world and force her to make an unthinkable choice.

The Heat of the Moon is Sandra Parshall's first novel.

I bought this book based on the strong posted reviews - what a mistake! Poor plot and character development made this nearly impossible to finish. When I did, I wodnered why I had wasted my time hoping the book would somehow earn the time invested reading it.

The Heart of the Moon is a compelling debut by Sandra Parshall which hooks the reader from the first page. Rachel Goddard, a young veterinarian, has overwhelming yet confusing reaction after watching a toddler in her office, crying and screaming for her mommy. This scene seems like it is reminiscent of one she experienced in her childhood but it is nothing she can place in her concrete memory. Rachel remembers bits and pieces of such a scene, but a feeling tell her there is more. And the feeling will not go away. As Rachel keeps digging trying to remember her childhood more questions than answers arise.

Rachel wants answers from her mom about what happened but her mother doesn't want to discuss the past. As a psychologist, Rachel's mother has always been the controller, the perfect parent who expects nothing less of those around her. Rachel enlists the help of a friend of her mother's from the past but he doesn't want to betray Rachel's mother's trust or friendship. He also isn't sure he knows exactly what transpired himself. Her boss, fellow veterinarian Luke Campbell , encourages her to delve into the mystery of what might of occurred to cause her feelings. But Rachel is up against the desire of her mother and her beloved sister to leave the past alone. To make matters worse, the mutual attraction between Rachel and Luke is not appreciated by her mother who has taken an active dislike to him. Her sister, whom she has been close to all her life, is becoming distant and distinctly unsupportive of her quest for answers.

The Heart of The Moon is a page turning mystery as one tries to figure out what secrets Rachel's mother is hiding from her and her sister. In this psychological thriller Sandra Parshall has created characters that sizzle and steam, not women easily forgotten. Using the emotion between a mother and her grown daughter, the eternal struggle to grow up and separate from a parent as the launches this plot's suspense to a place we can all understand. It examines the bonds between mother and daughter, the ties that hold sisters together and the knots that can become hopelessly entangled. The ending, both explosive and heart wrenching, is as powerful as it is unexpected.

Sandra Parshall won an Agatha for Best First Novel for The Heat of the Moon. Readers will easily see why she won this one the honor and agree that it is well deserved. She has now also written Disturbing the Dead, again featuring veterinarian Rachel Goddard. It will be interesting to watch if Parshall continues to develop the character of Rachel even more in the future.

5 out of 5 stars No Wonder It Won an Agatha!.......2007-06-04

Great book - held me from beginning to end. The characters are so finely drawn that they cease to be characters and become people you know. The setting is so realistic I was surprised to find I was in my home and not in McLean, VA. Seamless plotting brought me into the story. I was sorry to finish the book, the writing has a pristine quality that made me want to pick it up again as soon as I finished. Not only for the pleasure of the story, but for the pleasure of the way Parshall uses language. Looking forward to more from this author.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasing suspense novels.......2006-12-11

Dr. Rachel Goddard is a likeable protagonist -- she's a young veterinarian who cares for cats and dogs as well as wild hawks and possums. She lives with her younger sister Michelle, a psychology student, and her mother Judith, a renowned psychologist, in a stately, large house in McLean, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.

Life is good. Romance blossoms in Rachel's life. She loves her profession. Co-workers and friends like her. Then Rachel begins to experience disturbing memories. She lost her father at an early age and has difficulty remembering much about him. A desperate need soon arises in her to know more and she begins to investigate. Her mother Judith does her best to forestall Rachel's curiosity, but just why. . .?

This well-written, tightly-plotted debut novel moves at a jaunty clip. The mystery about Rachel's dark past unravels with satisfying twists and turns. Her work as a veterinarian adds considerable depth to the main character while the Washington, D.C. setting is vivid.

This is the best comic book ever. Im not a comic book geek, but i must admit that this book is great. The story is base in a real worl with no other "Special" like the Marvel universe or DC comic story line. That's what make the story even more attractive of how us, normal peaple, will react if a group of Special human would come to be and how they live in a wold with judgement and prejudisim that we live in.

This 3 act story line is great
Fist act: Who the Specials are
2th act: What they do in the world
3th act: How the rest of the world react to what they do

1 out of 5 stars Made me regret my literacy.......2003-12-05

I wasn't going to write a review on this, but when I noticed that this piece of garbage had 4 stars on it, I had to follow my conscience and warn people away.

There isn't one good moment in this book. I enjoyed the graphic novel, but the author's rendition here is mind-bogglingly horrible. I actually finished it to the end, which proved to be more hazardous to my brain cells than an all-week drinking binge, simply because I couldn't wrap myself around how genuinely awful it was. "Cringe" is an incredibly apt word to use in describing the process of reading this book. The dialogue was extremely bad, but the descriptions were worse. Honestly, if the subject matter didn't place it in the adult age range, the writing would have convinced me that this was intended for 5 year olds. The whole book feels like the author has nothing useful to contribute, and is simply making his characters emulate his favorite 2 dimensional TV shows. I was embarrassed to be reading this book. Embarrassed for myself, for the author who wrote it, the other people that have read the book, the publishers of the book, the other books that shared space with it in the bookstore, etc.

This is a painful, painful book to read. Please, don't make the same mistake I made in buying it. I'm done for, but you can move on, move on right past this book and pick up something good. Honestly, you could close your eyes in a book store and randomly point, and be guaranteed that what you come up with would be better than this trash.

5 out of 5 stars best fiction yet.......2003-10-09

i think that Rising Stars: Ten Years After is the best fictional book i have read yet.(other than the first Rising Stars book) this book keeps me on the edge of my seat. J.M.S. is a very good fiction writer. After I finish this book and the last one of the the trilogy, I want to read other books of his.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and moody.......2003-07-29

I'm not a huge fan of books written in the first person, but I sure did enjoy this one. The way the main character was portrayed helped make the whole book believable, and supplied a dark, moody, and gritty feel to the whole story. This story actually made the world of super-heroes seem believable. I say it's a good read if you like the Batman gothic scene.

        2 out of 5 stars What am I missing?.......2007-06-28

I guess I didn't pay enough attention before I made this purchase. I read the positive reviews and since I like to entertain I ordered it. I found it very disappointing. It's an odd size paperback with smallish print. There are no photos, just some tiny abstract purple hors d'oeuvres, which cover most every half page.

I can't for the life of me understand why everyone is so enamored with this book. I wasn't interested in the ridiculous "gently themed" party ideas, (which uses props like ping pong balls and pink and blue marbles) but hopefully to find some great new appetizer or hors d'oeuvres. I was hoping for some clever quick shortcuts, or savvy entertaining tips. If I gave a cocktail party using these suggestions/recipes my friends would laugh me off the loft!

The suggestion that "Guests love hors d'oeuvres that they can "customize" to their own taste" leads to a recipe where you boil new potatoes and cut an X in the top. The idea is for guests to pinch the potato open so they can top it with crème fraiche or sea salt. That's it? In the Wine-Tasting Party menu they list Wine Crackers. Turns out you are to simply place bowls of oyster crackers throughout the room.

Honestly, I tried to find something new I would use to entertain my guests but I just didn't. If using Styrofoam coolers placed in your bathtub is the method you want to use for cooling champagne then this book is for you!!

This book had a ton of great (and easy) recipes and tips on how to make entertaining easy for the host. We always have people over to our house and I'm always looking for new recipes that won't keep me in the kitchen. Also, it has lots of basic information on things like how much ice to buy, how to convert a single drink recipe into a pitcher and so on. The party ideas were kind of themey for my group but you can easily pick and choose what to use. I would recommend this book for anyone who loves entertaining.

        4 out of 5 stars Great tips!.......2006-07-22

Great tips in this book and quite a fun read! Some of the recipes were a little too involved for me, but still something to try when you are not rushed for time. A ton of ideas for working on things ahead of time so the day of the party will be stress free, but most involved freezing the food on cookie sheets until the party. I have a side-by-side fridge and cannot fit a cookie sheet. Such a shame because some of their ideas were quite appetizing!

        5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2006-05-11

I have been awaiting entertainment help like this forever! The tips shared by the Purcell Sisters are priceless - modern, easy, and fun! Just reading the book makes me want to throw a party.

Everything is arranged in a way that is easy to follow. From styles of parties, appropriate food to match the theme, and drinks that are sure to captivate the guests (and imagine this: they even give you recipes to make pitchers of these drinks, NO THOUGHT PROCESS WHATSOEVER!).. they offer suggestions on how to get your guests mingling, even the shy ones - and how to create a fun or sexy atmosphere, depending on what you're looking for.

This book is the best! I'm so glad i found it.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting read..........2007-01-09

Interesting to read about the breed from the Cuban perspective. The history of the breed, however, seems to be skewed by a lack of free information exchange in Cuba...it doesn't quite mesh with the history as presented in other countries...but, it was an interesting book and worth reading.

        1 out of 5 stars a disappointing read.......2005-11-27

I was very diappointed in this book. Having read the reviews I looked forward to receiving it but in fact I thought it no better than generic dog book descriptions of the havanese breed. So many of these books, like 'Puppies for dummies' for instance, just repeat the same old stuff. I really wanted to know more about choosing and raising a havanese puppy, but it was of little use as its main focus seemed to be for potential breeders. There was very little about health problems, temperament or behaviour. In fact the book's layout and presentation looks 20 years old and I have already given my copy away to a thrift shop.

This is a comprehensive and very informative book for anyone interested in learning about Havanese dogs. Its caught the attention of so many of my family and friends that I will be giving it out this holiday as gifts. Highly Recommend!! P.s. loved the extra pictures of Havana...

        Book Description

It is one thing to collect single-lens reflex cameras, but quite another to use them to take first-rate photographs. Now, with this authoritative guide to SLRs, experienced photographers and beginners alike can confidently do both. Ivor Matanle brings some forty years of experience to this exhaustive and practical book, which includes: descriptions and evaluations of the principal makes and models from the late nineteenth century to the 1980s; instructions on testing and checking for faults; pictures of classic cameras, lenses, and equipment; information on repairers and dealers; and listings of collectors' clubs and groups. Virtually all the book's photographs were taken with classic SLRs, and each picture is fully captioned with information about the camera and lens used to take the shot, together with details of the film, processing, and printing. Collecting and Using Classic SLRs will help expert and novice, collector and user, to learn more about the cameras they admire--and to enjoy them with greater understanding.

4 out of 5 stars A good intro to SLR history........2004-06-03

This is a very well organized and thorough book on the history of SLRs. It traces the design threads of SLR manufacturers from around the world. The hundreds of B&W photos of the cameras are very helpful identification aids. It is not an encyclopedia with exhaustive technical specs or a price guide with accurate dollar values. Instead, it is filled with the author's practical experiences in handling and using almost all of the cameras covered in the book through his decades as a professional photographer and used camera dealer.

Unfortunately, this book is really too short to be a true user's guide. Even the Nikon F is covered in only a few pages. There is very little info about lenses beyond the author's personal opinions (all Leica lenses are superb, don't buy non-manufacturer lenses, etc) and none at all about other accessories such as flashes or motor drives. The camera descriptions themselves assume you already know how each one is supposed to work and concentrates on pitfalls and repair (or nonrepair) weaknesses.

The book also suffers from the opinion of the author that any electronic automation is bad. His coverage of each company always ends abruptly when it begins to add electronics beyond a light meter - circa 1975 for most. Autodiaphram lenses are OK, but programmed autoexposure is not.

Lastly, the author has included a lot of his personal photos taken with many of the covered cameras. They make nice eye candy, but book quality reproduction does not give any real indication of lens quality.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Book on Cameras and Lenses.......2002-04-26

When I first read Ivor Matanle a few years ago I had never heard of this Englishman who writes so beautifully about cameras and lenses.
This book covers single lens cameras in several formats, rather than just 35mm. He has used the equipment he describes, and writes as well as a fine novelist. He gives the history of SLR's and tells about the rise of Asian cameras as Europe abandons innovation in design. But he plays no favorites. All cameras are treated fairly.
This is a book you will marvel at, if you are a user or a collector. Read it once; refer to it often. But above all, enjoy it and marvel at how well he writes.
With nearly 400 fine photos of equipment and pictures taken with these cameras, the book is a smorgasbord of information.
If I lost this book, I would drive 500 miles to replace it!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book - definitely worth having.......2000-12-25

Praise; I found the book very useful in identifying camera model and can highly recommend it. I liked the way the author discussed the camera and enjoyed his opinions.

The photographs of the cameras taken with the old cameras was, to me, an excellent idea and really showed what these cameras are still capable of.

I personally did not mind the authors personal photography and actually found them useful in comparing the variosu qualities of the cameras discussed. I think it is extremely unfair to be judgemental about someones photograph it all eye of the beholder really isn't it!

If you like using or collecting old SLR's then you can't really NOT have this book.

My only complaint; The softcover copy book that I bought the spine started to split and the cover has almost fallen off after a few days of intensive reading.

4 out of 5 stars Matanle's Classic SLRs Captures the Tools.......2000-07-16

Matanle's "Collecting and Using Classic SLRs" is amust own for every SLR camera collector. His camera close ups, as wellas specs, prove he knows his material. He provides abundant information on cameras A to Z. His shots of cameras are crystal clear; however, photos from his personal collection are somewhat hazy and appear out of place. Book is still worth the money...

3 out of 5 stars A companion to "Collecting and Using Classic Cameras".......2000-03-02

This book is a companion edition to Mantale's earlier "Collecting and Using Classic Cameras." As such it duplicates many of the strengths and weaknesses of the earlier volume.

The equipment discussed covers a wide range of European and Japanese cameras. As with its companion edition, it is sadly lacking in information concerning American made equipment.

Mantale offers a lot of opinion, but the opinion tends to be of superficial nature. The book is profusely illustrated with "enthusiastic amateur" quality photographs.

In summary: useful in breadth to a begining camera collector, disappointing in depth to the more serious collector. Caveat reader.

From New York to San Francisco, Times Square to the Tenderloin, graffiti artists, young people, radical environmentalists, and the homeless clash with police on city streets in an attempt take back urban spaces from the developers and "disneyfiers". Drawing on more than a decade of first-hand research, this lively account goes inside the worlds of street musicians, homeless punks, militant bicycle activists, high-risk "BASE jump" parachutists, skateboarders, outlaw radio operators, and hip hop graffiti artists, to explore the day-to-day skirmishes in the struggle over public life and public space.

One of the most important books I have read for the reclaiming of social space in an increasingly controlled and legislated urban landscape. His discussion of hotel cleaning women working on a Sunday morning in different rooms while singing Gospel music with each other is alone worth the cost of the book. The book is mandatory reading for anyone doing public art or performance, writing about it, or just trying to figure out why the Paris Commune is so important to understanding life in the city.

                      Book Description

In this extraordinary and unusual book, Jennifer Clement explores the turbulent relationships that Jean-Michel Basquiat had with his muse Suzanne Malouk and with the art establishment. The result is a distressing yet beautiful profile of a strange, powerful love striving to flourish in the face of horrendous outside pressures. And while Suzanne held firm, Basquiat sought refuge in a fatal heroin addiction. Widow Basquiat also presents an eye-witness account of the drug-fueled insanity of the New York art scene of the 1980s.

I had the honor of knowing Suzanne. She's an extraordinary human being, and I'm glad that someone else found her as special as I did. This book is simple, haunting, and beautifully written. Blessings on Suzanne, wherever she may be.

5 out of 5 stars Hearts and Tracks.......2002-08-20

This book was a excellent book in the matter that it protrayed another perspective of Jean-Michel Basquiat and let us in on the life of one of his most enduring muses in his short and unfortunate addictive lifestyle and life. The books poetic writings give Jean-Michel and Suzannes life together a hard tragedy instead of a glamorous protrayal (tragedy is the actual matter of fact). Jean-Michel and Suzanne's relationship was truely bizarre and not understanding to the everyday person. People who know or know of Jean-Michel probably never knew the side of him that Suzanne saw, and it is refreshing and wonderful that we were allowed to read such intimate details of their life together. I titled this review "Hearts and Tracks" because the book is full of heart and the heroine abuse of Suzanne and Basquiat (including a discription of his unfortunate death).

The book came in the maximum amount of time I expected - 2-14 business days from the notice I received from the seller that the item had been shipped. The quality of the item was high, much higher than expected for a used book. It looked brand new and I was very pleased with the item.

4 out of 5 stars Poetic, sympathetic, and True.......2002-03-15

I have been a fan of Basquiat for a long time. I am an artist as well. I have always been intrested in his life and have a lot of books on him and his art and his life. I found this book to be about a totally different perspective. Not only a womens persepctive but a women who was a muse to him. This book does not paint a glorified Picture of him...or a star struck tragic picture of him. It is about Susan and her plight with life, and him being a big part of it. The book is extremely poetic, very dark, sad, melancholy...but above all MOVING. I read it in less than 24 hours. I applaud Jennifer Clement

                      4 out of 5 stars s........2002-03-12

This is a surprisingly light read of a heavy topic that gives a unique, inside view of life with the artist, Jean-Michael Basquiat. It is an even better book when read as a success story of a woman who ultimately left an unhealthy relationship. Since it covers her childhood as well as her relationship with Basquiat and her attempts to move away from him you get a little bit of insight as to why she would be attracted to this type of person. When you finish the book you will have learned about the sensationalized artist but you will also learn a story about a very successful woman who wasn't quite as interesting to the public only because she was strong and overcame adversity instead of wallowing in it. She is probably not as famous as her ex-beau because she didn't die of an overdose, but such is our culture.
