Book Description

Gracie McLaughlin is an advice columnist who finds it difficult to live by the advice she gives. Within Arm’s Reach follows three generations of the McLaughlins, an Irish Catholic family who is jarred into crisis by Gracie’s unexpected pregnancy. This lyrical first novel is told through six different points of view: the unmarried Gracie, her sister Lila, their parents, their matriarchal grandmother, and a family outsider with a curious connection. As the McLaughlins respond to the profound change in Gracie’s life, their own memories and personal stories begin to emerge.

Ann Napolitano creates a family quilt of sorts, each person’s life and actions closely woven throughout the fabric of the past, present, and future. Within Arm’s Reach is a rich and deeply satisfying narrative of guilt, love, betrayal, and the ultimate loyalty—that of blood.

3 out of 5 stars Reads well, but sentimental.......2005-10-12

This novel is a cross between literature and a soap opera, in that there is constant character drama, and often some terrible decisions being made, but if you are able to suspend disbelief the characters are likable and will draw you through it. Basic plot: members of a family look over three generations and try to discover love. Artistic content: some transcendent realization outside of form. Is it good? Yes, it's good - not great. It's very easy to read, although the latter half of it has some sections that need to be skimmed for their utter lack of relevance. Napolitano uses common English to craft an inoffensive narrative. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting mainstream literature, with the caveat that it does wax sentimental quite frequently.

1 out of 5 stars Soap-Opery Tale - Unrealistic Characters.......2005-08-22

The first 1/3 of this book was just fine. The characters were portrayed realistically, with subtle enough evidence that this family was not what it appeared to be. Then the characters-mostly the female ones took 360 degree turns that were so unrealistic they became laughable, or at least shake one's head vigorously. When I reached for this book at my Barnes and Noble, it literally was within arm's reach (it was on the highest shelf). Frankly, I wish is was unreachable, I might have found a better book that day.

1 out of 5 stars Within Arm's Reach.......2005-08-19

OK so was I the only one that thought this novel was depressing? I found the characters to be weak individuals and all frightened of each other; they have to tiptoe and walk on eggshells at every turn. Who has that many regrets and self doubts about EVERY SECOND of their lives? Not the enjoyable summer reading I was expecting. Do not bother with this one!! If I could this would get zero stars

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining read, typical soap-opera type novel.......2005-06-26

Within Arm's Reach is a fictional novel set in New Jersey and told from the view points of six different people. Of course everyone is dealing with their past as well as the problems of the present. An Irish-American Catholic family, they are thrown into a crisis when unmarried Gracie becomes pregnant. The author does an excellent job of walking the reader through the maze of complex relationships between the characters as each shares their life story and point of view. For readers who thrive on a well-written family saga and the typical soap opera fare they will enjoy Within Arm's Reach and find it a recommended read.

Book Description

Eliezer Wren is a simple man who wants to be a simple priest. But stealing the Prince of Shadows' plunder and ambushing one of his most trusted servants is not the best way to go about ensuring a simple life - or a long and healthy one. Now Wren is on the run from the Prince's hunters, both living and dead, and caught in a web of betrayal from his past.

Yushuv is a boy who wants nothing more than to grow into being a man in his own time, and to scour the ancient catacombs near his village for forgotten treasure to sell. But when an ancient evil sets his home to the sword, Yushuv is forced to discover the catacombs' darkest secret - and to take the first steps on the road to his ultimate destiny.

For in this time of strife, even the heavens hide their secrets, and a divination gone wrong sets in motion a series of events that threaten to rock the very foundations of the Realm. The fates of priests, spirits, soldiers and the Solar Exalted themselves are bound up together, and only the actions of the unlikeliest of heroes can determine what the future holds - or if there will be any future at all.

1 out of 5 stars Buy something else.......2003-05-01

This book was terible, I know that it is based upon a role playing game, that I've never played, but this whole series is just awful. There are very little details given about the characters, describtions, type of clothes, builds, facial expresions, etc. The characters are very wooden, little deapth into them. The fight scenes are hard to imagine and even harder to get thru. There is very little describtion on the exalted sun powers and what they are, how they are granted, etc. When the books continue on in two, and book three, there is very little background given, from book to book, if you picked up book two before book one, you may get very lost. ...

5 out of 5 stars Comsumptuos Fantasy.......2002-11-19

Books like this dont only intrest you, the engulf you with their style, world, and character developement; consuming you and not letting go until the tragic last page of a marvelous book. When ending this book, I remember wishing there had been at least one more chapter, or that part 2(beloved of the dead) had already been released. I have now almost finished beloved of the dead and am loving it as well.

Richard Dansky is a marvelous writer, with seemingly flawless diction, wich is yet still simple and flows with ease. In addition to that, gives a wonderful amount of discription, with another for concept, but still allowing our imagination to fly. Most importantly, amazing character developement; not only of the protagonist, but the antogonist as well(which seem mixed in reality's shades of grey). Each with reasonable, understandable, and humane emotions, qualities, and faults. A great read indeed for the casual reader looking for something enjoyable...

5 out of 5 stars Consumptous Fantasy.......2002-11-19

This book is marvelous, simply marvelous. It is relatively simple in text, but the world, characters, and style are all engrossing to an extent that your sucked in, or consumed if you will, and don't want to let go. Possibly my faviorate thing about his style is his word choice, so simple, and yet seemingly flawless. In addition, each character, including the antagonists, are given understandable and humane qualities/faults. I don't remember the last book I read so quickly. I'm already almost through the second book and await finding the third.

These books are not rare, nor common, and seem to be in few numbers. I have seen them from barnes and nobles to kmart, but never more than one at a time, so if your intrested, you might want to buy it now than risk not finding it.

3 out of 5 stars The Chosen of the Sun.......2002-11-03

This is the first book in the trilogy of the second age. It begins the adventures of Eliezer Wren and a boy named Yushuv and their struggle against evil forces. It is an easy read, compared to other books I've read, but lacks real depth. However, if you like fantasy or are a fan of White Wolf fantasy, you should definetly give it a read.

We already knew Joe McGinniss could chill our blood (Fatal Vision) and arouse both our pity and distaste for the Kennedys (The Last Brother), but who knew he could be so funny? (Well, maybe readers who remember The Selling of the President back in 1968.) Even those who have no interest in soccer--the majority of Americans, he ruefully admits--will relish the author's vivid account of a team from Castel di Sangro, a tiny town in Italy's poorest region, that against all expectations made it to the national competition. Whether he's chronicling his ordeal at possibly the least-inviting hotel in Italy (the heat doesn't come on until October, no matter the temperature; he is assigned to a room up four flights of stairs though there are no other guests), or sketching a colorful cast of characters that includes the team's sinister owner and an utterly unflappable translator, McGinniss prompts roars of laughter as he reveals an Italy tourists never see. He also saddens readers with a shocking final scene in which he confronts the nation's casual corruption, which taints men he's come to respect and even love. Although not a conventional memoir, this stirring book reveals as much about the author's passionate character as about the nation and the players who win his heart, then break it. --Wendy Smith

    Book Description

Master storyteller Joe McGinniss travels to Italy to cover the unlikely success of a ragtag minor league soccer team--and delivers a brilliant and utterly unforgettable story of life in an off-the-beaten-track Italian village.

When Joe McGinniss sets out for the remote Italian village of Castel di Sangro one summer, he merely intends to spend a season with the village's soccer team, which only weeks before had, miraculously, reached the second-highest-ranking professional league in the land. But soon he finds himself embroiled with an absurd yet irresistible cast of characters, including the team's owner, described by the New York Times as "straight out of a Mario Puzo novel," and coach Osvaldo Jaconi, whose only English word is the one he uses to describe himself: "bulldozer."

As the riotous, edge-of-your-seat season unfolds, McGinniss develops a deepening bond with the team, their village and its people, and their country. Traveling with the miracle team, from the isolated mountain region where Castel di Sangro is located to gritty towns as well as grand cities, McGinniss introduces us to an Italy that no tourist guidebook has ever described, and comes away with a "sad, funny, desolating, and inspiring story--everything, in fact, a story should be" (Los Angeles Times).

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-10-05

Even though it is written for the football novice and can be facile at times - A WONDERFUL BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars An All-Time Great Sports Book.......2007-05-31

It's fitting that even after hearing about this book because of soccer, I ended up stumbing across it in the travel section. Soccer may be the glue of the book, but it's a travelogue at heart. McGinness starts with his newfound madness for soccer bringing him to Italy, yet quickly lets the game recede into the muddle of everyday life. The writing quickly becomes part Simon Kuper and part Bruce Chatwin. The book thankfully takes in as much lush description and hilarious anecdotes as it does tactical decisions and game descriptions. Instead of just an Italian version of a John Feinstein book, we get a truly unique story that evokes real and lasting emotion rather than the passing interest of locker room voyuerism.

Much of criticism here seems to miss the point. It's true that McGinniss makes himself the main character, but it's not a weakness (some arrogance, maybe, but not mere narcissism). The book, after all, is mainly about the shock of the outsider looking in: on soccer, on the village, on Italian society as a whole, and especially the repulsive compromises between love of the game and its seedier elements. If McGinniss doesn't quite succeed at making some grand assessment of Italy or a master's analysis of soccer, who cares? The story he tells is fascinating, emotive, and tragic nontheless. It reaches far beyond the world of the game and its fans, and should be a must-read for anyone.

4 out of 5 stars The Sopranos and even better in Castel di Sangro.......2007-05-20

During the sixties Joe Mc Ginniss wrote about presidential campaigns and the selling of the president. He made a marvellous and unexpected comeback in 1999 with his The Miracle of Castel di Sangro. You will never regret buying this wonderful book about soccer in an isolated moutain region in Italy. Joe Mc Ginniss spends the season with this astonishing soccer team. In fact he depicts soccer as one of the pillars of communal life in this very peculiar village- like setting. But it is not an innocent setting. Innocence is definitely lost in this part of the continent and Mc Ginniss produces remarkable characters. The owner, Signor Rezza, straight out of the Sopranos, the coach Osvaldo Jaconi, "to argue with him is like throwing pebbles at a bulldozer" and the name of the team's principal sponsor, Soviet Jeans. Multiple plotlines develop in the story. The most exciting one is in the end when Castel di Sangro Calcio ultimately secures its position in the B series. The last needless game there is a smell of corruption when Castel di Sangro Calcio is defeated by 3 to 1 by Bari that thereby gains promotion. This stinking smell of corruption delivers an unhappy ending for Joe Mc Ginniss but the story is wonderful.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice story.......2006-08-10

This book was especillay enjoyable to read this summer after Italy's win in the World Cup. Regardless, I found the book a delight to read. If you enjoy Soccer or Italy, you would likely enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Is this worthy of a book?.......2006-07-28

By the time "Grande Joe" steps off the plane in Italy and his book begins, the Miracle of Castel Di Sangro has already taken place. What we are left with is the much less exciting and much more common story of a team playing to avoid relegation. Is it just me or did McGinniss arrive a season too late? There simply isn't any story left. The football commentary and insight are of the armchair variety and even if it wasn't, the football just isn't that good (by the author's own admission).
The strongest material comes from the author's interactions with an Italian culture he doesn't even attempt to assimilate with. So much for "do as the romans do". In many ways Joe is the ugliest of ugly americans even as he insists he isn't. Giving McGinniss the benefit of the doubt, I would say he is encouraging us to laugh at him. Although I was so embarrassed for him when reading about his "polemics" that it was more uncomfortable than funny. It was also sad to see the author burn all his bridges so clumsily at the end.
All the usual travel schtick is on display here, complete with language blunders and crappy hotels. Anyone who has travelled has a million stories like this. Most of the author's aren't particularly exciting, and when they are they smack of embellishment.
Really slick prose, some funny moments, a goofy American in Italy, that's the book. It seems to me that Joe went to Italy looking for drama and didn't find any. After giving up a million dollars to write a book about O.J. Simson (as he is constantly reminding us) I guess he had to justify the 9 months he spent in Italy.

Throughout, sidebars (like "How to Flambé") offer useful information on techniques and ingredients; a glossary and basics section are also helpful. Though small in size, the book provides an inclusive store of superior recipes and instruction. --Arthur Boehm

This book is right on par with the other titles in the series. Well-written, great recipes and beautiful photography. The perfect roast chicken and farmhouse chicken noodle soup are delicious. My only disappointment is the chicken basics section. I would've like more photos with the techniques, but that seems to be the style of this series.

Who better than the founder of WAHM.com, the highly popular Web site for work-at-home moms, and author of a widely-read column and cartoon about home office life to give effective advice about balancing a career and a family? In IT'S AJUNGLEOUTTHEREANDAZOOINHERE, Cheryl Demas relays helpful and hilarious anecdotes about her own experiences leaving the Jungle (workplace) and entering the Zoo (home office). Readers will discover how to plan based on personal circumstances; avoid scams; set up a workable home office and promote a business; juggle children and work demands; and more. Filled with Cheryl's popular cartoons, this book is every working mother's best friend.

3 out of 5 stars Borrow, don't buy, this book.......2005-08-05

Cheryl Demas, founder and owner of Work at Home Moms (...) wrote this book to encourage other moms who are considering whether they should make the move home. The subtitle of the book is "Run Your Home Business without Letting it Overrun You."

The book is packed with personal anecdotes, (cheesy) cartoons, drawn by Demas herself, and overstretched metaphors. The chapter titles take the "Jungle/Zoo" motif way too far (see the chapter titled "Don't Feed the Animals"). Also, Demas has a way of telling way to much about her own life and family, turning it into a confessional (what does her love for chocolate and weight gain have to do with me starting a home-based business?). However, there are some hidden gems that you can find in this volume.

For example, each chapter includes a section titled "Solutions from Sister Zoos," which offers readers snapshot solutions offered by WAHMs. Some problems addressed:
o I can't afford to quite my job to start a home business.
o How did you choose your business?
o How to you work around your kids' schedules and needs?

Overall, this book is a fun read, and it offers tidbits of useful advice for parents considering transitioning to working at home. However, it's probably not worth purchasing (borrow instead) or reading cover to cover. Just skim to find answers to your most pressing questions.

4 out of 5 stars The truth about working at home.......2005-05-17

I have enjoyed both of Cheryl's books because they are written in a personal, easy to read fashion and they provide the reality of what its like to work-at-home! I have been working at home for over 14 years and providing work-at-home information and resources online for over 7, so I know a worthwhile book when I find it. Cheryl's book provides great information on how to work-at-home as well as tips on how to make it work. Far from being "pie-in-the-sky", working at home doesn't always solve the family/work balance challenge. But Cheryl provides a humorous approach on developing the best work-at-home scenario possible.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, humorous book for WAHM's.......2003-10-10

I thoroughly enjoyed Cheryl's book and highly recommend it to any mom working from home or wishing to. She tells us of her personal experiences dealing with working from home and raising a family at the same time. A great weekend read!

                    5 out of 5 stars Wahmmy!.......2003-05-29

Cheryl Demas has written a great book for work at home parents. As a work at home mom myself and the webmaster of a site for work at home parents, I found the book an interesting and light-hearted take on the ups and downs of working at home. If you're a WAH parent or you're thinking of becoming one, this is a must-read. Veteran WAHPs will see the truth on nearly every page, and potential WAHPs will have realistic expectations of the WAH lifestyle.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good Laugh.......2003-05-20

I must admit, Cheryl is certainly funny. There is plenty to learn and think about while reading her book. I am almost for sure it will be a huge hit once the word gets out and am frankly surprised by it not going huge sooner. Her wit is quick and slightly off at times but makes me feel good and hopeful for the future. There are so many work at home books on the market today that it is hard to find one moms - or even females - can connect to. This one is a winner. It does not have all of the answers but it sure has impacted my way of thinking. The one thing that is often overlooked in these types of books is exactly what is one supposed to do with children - really practical doable suggestions that work for more than an hour at a time. I find myself feeling gulity and drained when trying to juggle home duties and "home work" with kids underfoot. The Pros and Cons in the book are even light hearted but as she says, a con is "Your children may see the bad side of business too - the stress and the headaches. When you work at home, you can't use your commute time to decompress." This is so true and then I find the questions overwhelming as whether or not I am trying to do the best thing for my family - and my own sanity. Every summer I try to work at home and end up giving up. Maybe there is a better time than others to try? It's worth the money just for the humor. My other recommendation for a little more serious book and specific information for success - but certainly not dull - is: Why Aren't You Your Own Boss," by Paul and Sarah Edwards.

                                Book Description

Compound figures are created when a single object is shaped so that two different subjects are revealed when the object is turned 90 degrees—from one angle it is an angel, from another a butterfly. This intermediate level scroll saw book provides 40 patterns for creating these objects and detailed instructions on how to execute the tricky scroll saw maneuvers required to cut them.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book but..........2007-09-25

The book is Ok, with real good pictures and patterns but I prefer the Compound Cutting book by Diane Thompson. These patterns are actually 2 items when they are cut out. Turn one side and you have one thing and turn to the other side and you have something else. The idea is good but the plain 'ole compound cutting looks much better in my opinion.

The book arrived in great condition. The designs are as advertised and
                                easy to use.

4 out of 5 stars Good but Not Great.......2001-05-31

I have been scroll sawing for about 10 years and always looking for new books and patterns. The patterns in this book are easier than I generally use. For a beginner scroll sawer this would be a good starting book. For advanced scrollers most of the patterns are too simple. There are all new patterns and designs that I have not seen before and I will use the patterns. I hope author does more patterns in this style.

I really enjoy making the whimsical projects in this book. The directions and techniques are relatively easy. The projects can be made quickly from scrap wood. Everyone I know got a little pink flamingo for Valentine's Day. I made flocks of miniature ducks and herds of tiny bunnies to stuff into plastic eggs for Easter gifts. 3-D minis are a fun new way to make little folk art figures.

I was intrigued by the idea of miniature wooden "statues" but was disappointed when reviewing this book. On a technical basis it does not always provide step by step instructions to achieve a result. You typically get a before and after picture. On a personal basis, the finished products are generally quite crude which does not appeal to me. I'll stick to scrollsawing larger items!

                                        Book Description

Can fine art survive in an age of mass media? If so, in what forms and to what purpose? These are the challenging questions addressed in this thoroughly revised, updated and expanded edition of "Art in the Age of Mass Media", as John Walker examines the fascinating relationship between art and mass media, and the myriad interactions between high and low culture in a postmodern, culturally pluralistic world.

Using a range of historic and contemporary works of art to illustrate theoretical points, Walker explores the variety of ways in which modern artists have responded to the arrival of new, mass media. He ranges from the socialist paintings of Courbet to the anti-Nazi photomontages of Heartfield, from community murals and Keith Haring's use of graffiti to the kitsch self-promotion associated with Jeff Koons. The new edition describes what happened during the 1990s, including Toscani's adverts for Benetton, the simulations of Leeds 13, art and cinema, Damien Hirst, and the cyberart currently being produced for the internet. "Art in the Age of Mass Media" is an invaluable introduction to the continuing debates between high art and low culture for students of media and cultural studies and art history.

Art is a social institution. So it can't be insulated from social influences. Artists are sellers in market. They earn their bread by selling their products, artworks.
Art is a language shared by social actors. Artworks can't be read without shared code to interpret the meaning of the text. They call it as convention. Convention is established through the power relationship in the market among producer (artists), intermediary (critics) and consumer (audience).
In this regard, art is just another medium like mass media. The author questions when the mass media dominates the culture, what is the status of pure art? In this vein, following questions, which have haunted the field of artistic production since the 19th century, gains renewed significance. Could art secure its autonomy as modernists dreamt of? What is the social role of art?
To answer those questions, the author probes into the language and market of visual art from pop art to postmodernism. Various avant-garde movements since pop art has borrowed and exploited material, subject and strategy of mass media. In turn, mass culture has utilized the art as high culture. But the position of pure art is still restricted to institutionalized sanctuary like museum, university. It's no more than high culture protected from below. It's utilized to distinguish from others by high society. It's not clear whether artwork is different from luxury goods in its utility. Adorno's word still reverberates in the circle of artists: "Today, it goes without saying that nothing concerning art goes without saying, not much without thinking. Everything about art has become problematic: its inner life, its relation to society, even its right to exist".

                                          Book Description

Taking us from the open spaces of rural New Mexico and the fields of California's Great Central Valley to the intellectual milieu of student life in Berkeley during the 1950s, this memoir, based on an oral history by Mario T. García, is the powerful and moving testimonio of a young Mexican American woman's struggle to rise out of poverty. Migrant Daughter is the coming-of-age story of Frances Esquibel Tywoniak, who was born in Spanish-speaking New Mexico, moved with her family to California during the Depression to attend school and work as a farm laborer, and subsequently won a university scholarship, becoming one of the few Mexican Americans to attend the University of California, Berkeley, at that time. Giving a personal perspective on the conflicts of living in and between cultures, this eloquent story provides a rare glimpse into the life of a young Mexican American woman who achieved her dreams of obtaining a university education.
In addition to the many fascinating details of everyday life the narrative provides, Mario T. García's introduction contextualizes the place and importance of Tywoniak's life. Both introduction and narrative illustrate the process by which Tywoniak negotiated her relation to ethnic identity and cultural allegiances, the ways in which she came to find education as a channel for breaking with fieldwork patterns of life, and the effect of migration on family and culture. This deeply personal memoir portrays a courageous Mexican American woman moving between many cultural worlds, a life story that at times parallels, and at times diverges from, the real life experiences of thousands of other, unnamed women.
