    3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-07

The first X-Men movie novelisation is a lot shorter than the third, and suffers a bit because of it, and it looks like the writers were told to play it straight, and not given the license or room to extrapolate and throw in embellishments to improve the book as a whole. Otherwise, it is a solid retelling of the Wolverine and Rogue saga, as the learn of the X-Men and finally realise what his plan is.

This leads to the confrontation at the Statue of Liberty to prevent a whole bunch of world leaders turning into genetic goo.

    5 out of 5 stars X-Men.......2007-01-04

This book was awesome. It is, however, somewhat different from the movie, but it's still a good read. I really recommend this book it's one of the best Comic Book based movie novelization i've read.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2005-08-03

X-Men: A Novelization arrived in perfect condition and was an excellent book to read.

3 out of 5 stars Possibly Worse then Daredevil!.......2003-08-18

If any of you have read my reveiw for Daredevil you know what i mean. I hated the Daredevil Movie Tie-In and i did not like this one that much either. For starters I am a huge fan of the X-Men ( Wolverine is my favoerite! ) In the book Wolverine has four claws that come out of his nucles. Well and body who has seen the movies, or read a comics knows that he only has three claws that come out from in between the nucles. After reading that the book just wasn't the best for me. Too much was changed from the movie.

Overall: Well...It is an easy read, but not up to par.

3 out of 5 stars be happy with the movie.......2003-07-02

I like movie novelizations where both the movie and the book are good, but in different ways. The things that happen in this book are almost exactly the same as the things that happened in the movie - I was impressed that it could be this accurate and still be such a short book. There are a few things in the book that weren't in the movie at all, such as, at the beginning, parts that explain what it was like for Cyclops and Storm when they first got their powers. That was nice. Still, it felt like this book managed to leech all the excitement out of the story. It was a faithful book, but not a very fun one.

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars instead of 4 because xmen should be better.......2007-08-16

I wish they had put the ending from the actual movie in the book, I would have liked to read that, but what can you expect when the movie novalization comes out 2 months before the movie? I guess they didn't want to spoil it. But good overall.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Awesome.......2006-01-12

I really liked this book. I loved how the Auther tells the story. I love The X-men. when i found out that there was a X-men 2 novel i couldn't wait to read it and i don't regret it. I recomend this book for everyone. You'll like it.

If you liked this book check out the movie, soundtrack and all other X-Men merchindise

5 out of 5 stars Pretty cool, with more to come.......2006-01-03

I remember going into borders looking for a good read. the x-men movie had recently been put into theaters, and I wanted to go see it but my parents really weren't interested so I knew I wasn't going to see it any time soon. I was combing the sci-fi section when I saw it. I really wanted it. I couldn't see the movie, so I would read the book.
I was through it in two days ( it's not short so you know, i just read fast) it was gripping, and I couldn't put it down. I found myself wanting to know what happened next.
it's about how Stryker (the man who made Wolverine who he is) kidnaps the professor and steals cerebro, so he can kill every mutant in the world.
Claremont is able to describe the character's emotions perfectly. He manages to tell exactly what is going through the character's mind excellently.
And there is more to come, Claremont is also writing the 3rd X-men book for the movie. I can't wait, it comes out on May 26, so preorder.
So if you liked the movie and want it in book form, get this. Or if you haven't seen the movie but want to, get this. It won't do you wrong.

4 out of 5 stars A perfect book for vacations.......2004-07-19

I liked this book mostly because of its length, but also because it simply was told in a good way. Not too fast, not too slow. (Well, occasionally it was too slow, but that happened very rarely.) The end differs a little from how the movie ends, though, which is pretty hard to comment. After all, this isn't the movie - this is a book. And so, it seems stupid to say it is bad because it differs from the film, since people reading this book might not have seen the film. But, let's face it: They are likely to have seen it. Still, I think this book does deserve a four - After all, the new ending was more of the kind of ending that I like than the one in the movie. And since it's 400 pages long, it's perfect for vacations. And other occasions, as well.

About the story: It's pretty nice, and introduces many new mutants. In fact, this book features mutants never shown in the film, giving you a nice feeling of reading deleted scenes from the film.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, one of the best movie novelizations I've read!.......2003-07-22

I'm a really big movie fan and because I also love to read, I love to read movie novelizations. If a novelization is written well, it's such a pleasure to read more about your favorite movie characters, how the were feeling during certain parts of the movie, plus get to find out lots of extra trivia. And I must say, "X-Men 2" was written exceptionally well!

"X-Men: A Novelization" is a novelization from the 2000 action packed movies starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellan. Genetic mutants are very real in the 'not too distant future'. Made outcasts from societies, these mutants are rejected, feared, and hated for their superhuman powers. Some mutants want to strike out against mankind, these mutants being led by the powerful Magneto. But then again, there are some mutants who uses their special abilities for the greater. They battle against prejudice and agents of intolerance to save mankind, these mutants are the X-Men. But now there is a new enemy whose cunning and evil plan may lead to the destruction of all mutants and until the enemy is stopped, no one is safe...

First off I would like to say that I've never been an X-Men fan, never even have read any of the comics. It was only recently that I saw the movie "X-Men", read the first X-Men novelization, then saw "X-2". I found the movies a totally must-see experience! So naturally I wanted to pick up the novelization. A great read I must say!

Compared to the first movie novelization by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, "X-Men 2" was written with a better style. Instead of focusing on just one main character, Chris Claremont delves into each and every character, from the main X-men characters to the small characters of the soldiers or police involved. The action is put into words with great care, neither hunkering it down with too many details nor shortening the action into boring little incidents.

The only major problem with this book is the ending which I'm sure other reviewers have mentioned. What exactly had happened? It's totally different from the movie! My only question is, what's going to happen when X-3 comes out, which it inevitably will. Since the movie and book endings are different, how is the X-3 movie novelization going to turn out.

Overall, I can highly recommend this book for all "X-Men" or "X-Men 2" movie fans. I'm not sure if "X-Men" comics fans might enjoy this, since I don't know if the characters are very different from the comics. The movie was rated PG-13 so I guess this book is more for older teens and adults because of some swearing, violence, and sexual innuendos.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good... Pretty good indeed..........2003-08-07

Over all I think it was pretty good. They kind of spent the whole book wasting they're time in some sort of spell but that's pretty easy to overlook since It makes a decent amount of sense. The only thing I was dissapointed with is while they where in the future I was hoping they would meet older versions of some of the X-men that didn't get stuck in the trap like Pyslocke or Havok or Longshot or someone. One thing that in my opinion could have made the book better is if Gambit was in it. I know this review isn't very informative but that's cause I'm tired and I don't want to give to much of this book away.
Overall it was a very good sequel, The stakes where definetely raised/

4 out of 5 stars Helpful to organize you grocery lists.......2007-01-08

I bought this book after seeing featured on the local news show. I thought it was very interesting to go over the suggested shopping lists and found that I had almost all of them in the house already. Most of the recipes are a little more detailed than I like to do on weekday evenings because they take too long but I love the fact that I can plan special meals for my family when I have time and that they aren't real difficult or involved. The mix of fresh ingrediants with things you can buy premade works really well and I love the bread recipes! I especially like the fact that there are dishes that freeze really well and they have instructions for you on how to freeze them. Not nessesarily a book for beginners but one I am certainly glad to have in my kitchen library.

The information is extremely generic with the exception of a few passages here and there. I really don't think this is the author's fault- and the info is useful- but if you want a really good feeling for what it's like to own a QUAKER- you should also buy Mattie Sue Athan's outstanding book. That said, the one thing I do object to here is this author's claim that any household with cats and Quakers should have the cats declawed. That may be fair to the birds but is an incredible injustice to the felines. If you can't keep them separate, you might be better off not having one or the other. Overall, a solid book but if I didn't already have a Quaker this book would not have shown me how amazing these birds are! They are incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the novice bird owner.......1999-03-06

When I first bought my Quaker, I didn't know the first thing about parrots. Fortunately for both of us he was so young he couldn't come home yet. I bought this book and read every page religiously. She gave me so much insight into what my bird would behave like, look like, eat, want, you name it. Her writing was easy to read and understand. She herself owns Quakers, so she is accustomed to their behavior, behavior problems, quirks, eating habits, likes, dislikes, etc. By the time I was done reading the book, I felt like the expert; from cage purchase to food selection to an attention schedule. My bird and I are a happy family now, and I still refer to my book when I need help. I highly recommend it to any Quaker Parrot owner.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for New or Prospective Quaker Owner.......1998-03-31

An experienced parrot owner and breeder myself, I found little to disagree with in this book. Ms. Higdon's writing is clear, informative, and easy to understand. She obviously knows her subject, and she writes well. Her sly but gentle sense of humor is evident and enjoyable. The information presented is accurate, up-to-date, and covers most of the things a new Quaker owner will need to know. She portrays the personality and characteristics of the Quaker quite well and makes several excellent points, such as the fact that talking ability should be a secondary rather than primary concern when choosing a parrot for a pet, that are seldom made in other books. The focus of this book is quite different from Theresa Jordan's handbook - it contains no information pertaining to breeding and may not be of interest to the breeder or experienced Quaker owner. If, however, you have newly acquired a Quaker or are considering getting one, I would highly recommend it.

        Book Description

The Quaker parrot is becoming one of the most popular companion parrots as bird owners discover that it is easy to train, has a colorful and endearing personality, and often develops human speech imitation almost spontaneously. This volume provides the details of parrot behavior training, best begun when the bird is still in its baby stage. Patterning and positive reinforcement are applied to balancing human and territorial bonding, maintaining status in the pecking order, and "potty" training. The author also gives general advice on cages, bird toys, grooming, diet, and protecting against household accidents. Potential problem areas are also discussed, including aggressive behavior, molting, excessive noisemaking, and sexual behavior. There is a special chapter on physically imperfect Quaker parrots, advice on recapturing escaped birds, and background information on Quakers as pets in Brazil. The text is enhanced with dozens of full-color photos and line art.

4 out of 5 stars great guide for the novice quaker owner.......2007-06-27

I found this book helpfull and informative. It better helped me to understand some of the behaviours i had already noticed in my quaker.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-03-24

I liked this book and it has a lot of information in it about the Quaker. The only thing that I wasn't happy with was the fact that I felt like the book deals too much with baby Quakers. The Quaker that I bought was already 7 months old and had already gone through many of the stages of learning that are talked about in the book. However, if you are bringing home a baby Quaker or just have general care questions about the Quaker, then this book is for you.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-03-24

What a great resource -- huge, vass information on Quakers in particular -- just what is needed for those researching a soon to be Quaker parent. Gives great information on rehabilitation for those of you who are considering a rescue. Thank you. Definetely worth the money!!!

4 out of 5 stars No real food guidance for beginners.......2006-02-19

The book overall is a great book, however, there really is no food guidance on what you should feed your Quacker. As a new parent to an adult quacker I really needed something that gives more detail in food does and don'ts.

It did help explain some of the behavioral issues and how to solve them that we noticed in our Quacker.

Overall, I would recommend this book, but if you are looking for a book on feeding, you may want to buy an additional book. This book is very helpful in other areas!

5 out of 5 stars Simple but clear with all the essential info.......2002-04-13

If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...

4 out of 5 stars All about jigs.......2005-03-18

This book is primarily about how to build and use jigs for a router. Since it's based on articles the author has previously published, it's not systematically organized - unless from simple to difficult. Wearing does provide many tips scattered throughout the text, the illustrations are beautifully photographed or drawn in color, and the prose is crisp and clear. However, there is little on the selection of routers or bits (he admits that he has few cutters and his routers are old), and the emphasis is definitely on his jigs, which are fascinating but sometimes rather complex. If I had a full workshop, I'd delight in making some of them. This book is probably not for beginners, but can be a valuable asset to anyone with the tools to make his jigs.

                        Book Description

Riveting, funny, pointed, and poignant, the forty-four essays gathered in this anthology speak eloquently of dreams, memories -- and some-times the painful realities -- of the personal landscapes we call home. For most people, the notion of home is central to their lives; by the same token, there are a multitude of definitions of the word, many of them very personal and particular. These essays explore the different meanings and significances of "home," from a house where one grew up to a passion for a place. Not only do they provide fascinating and vivid glimpses into their authors' lives, but these recollections also invariably strike a chord with the reader. No matter how different from our own, each story touches us, eliciting reflection on our personal histories.

Whether it's a young woman trying to achieve "escape velocity" from a city she profoundly loves, another who muses while sitting on a bench near the apartment building where she grew up, a man realizing that what he had thought was home was really his mother's presence there, or an army brat whose family moved twelve times marveling at her mother's ability to make a home in each new place, they are all seeking, in some way, to go home. Thoughts of Home is about the places we remember and also the people we love-it is about nostalgia and acceptance, pride and humility.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Collection of Memories.......2001-05-30

I am lucky to have found the hardback in this and will treasure it. I consider it a must-have for anyone's library and to share with friends and family. I was born and raised in West Virginia. In my life of 46 years, I have lived in 11 different places (I'm on my 11th) and was (and still am) homesick for my childhood home every time. This book is for those of us who will never leave "home" or "family" behind. This book is for those who carry their true home deep within their hearts wherever they may find themselves in their lives. It is a touching poignant journey down a most colorful and enriching collection of paths.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2000-08-16

As you read through these essays, you come to realize that home is less about decorating a building and more about building a life. Memories, family, nature, the things that help you find your place in the world, all extolled and admired. Beautifully written, brilliantly edited, a great gift.

This very inexpensive paperback with a stunning cover contains nearly 50 stories of a precious house and/or special town/city that impacted the author and her/his family deeply. I had read many of these essay stories in the magazine, so I was aware that many of these narratives are gems. I am trying to read only one a week, because I find it hard to laugh and cry at the same time, and that's what these stories do--grab at the fabric of your life--one a week is enough emotional wrenching. My favorite so far is about 5 stories in, about a dweller in a Massachusetts seatown who moves out west but cannot forget his sea town--beautifully written story. Buy this overly-enexpensive book, do NOT give your copy to others or it will never return, and buy many gift copies for those you love.

I was hoping for larger photos, maybe even larger pages, but there is a fine representation of movie posters in this book.

Being a fan of the B grade movies that get shown in the annual Incredibly Strange Film Festival, this book was an obvious purchase and I wasn't disappointed. There is a feast of all that's good and bad about these movie genres. The reproduction is superb and the selection thoughtful. My only criticism is that there is no logic and probably only the author's personal preference as to how big or small each poster gets presented - on some pages there is only one poster, on others there are 5 - I would have preferred one per page, but I guess that would have more than doubled the price. I only hope that there will be a second volume soon!

Bruce Hershenson has managed over several books to enlighten many of us who are involvred in collecting movie posters. From his Crime Movie Posters, Horror Movie Posters,Academy award winners and a whole rope let alone string in his ever increasing catalogue we are able to gain great reference for the discerning collector. Also for those who perhaps cannot afford to invest into some great titles Hershenson has enabled those with a tight budget to appreciate the poster art from the twentieth century at a very reasonable cost.

The content is laid out in a similar fashion to his previous books starting with early titles from the silent era, Homer's Odyssey 1909 right up to 1999's Sleepy Hollow, covering a multitude of titles, actors and actresses and subjects all coming under the heading of Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy. Such recognisable titles as Dracula, Batman and Raiders of the Lost Ark to lesser known titles such as Phantom From Space and The Green Pastures with an image to cover each year.

The quality is very high with great colour on all the pages and at such a reasonable price this is truly a bargain, for a collector, a fan, a movie buff or just someone who likes to sit and watch a late night movie this is an excellent buy.

Perhaps the only critcism for any of these books is the lack of text on the artists that produced the great artwork. A history on the film is all well and good and has probably been produced elsewhere, even if it is in Halliwell's but for the poster the artist is the all important person. It would be nice to know to whom the credit should go for such evocative art work. An impossible task perhaps, although if there were only a dozen images explained then this and all of Bruce Hershenson's book's would receive 5 stars and two thumbs up.

                        Book Description

"An Italian ROOTS." The Washington Post Book World
At long last, Gay Talese, one of America's greatest living authors, employs his prodigious storytelling gifts to tell the saga of his own family's emigration to America from Italy in the years preceding World War II. Ultimately it is the story of all immigrant families and the hope and sacrifice that took them from the familiarity of the old world into the mysteries and challenges of the new.

I have tried. I really have. And I admire the writer but other than brief flashes in the hundred or so pages I read, the book is stultifyingly boring. There is a wonderful story here that gets so bogged down in continuous reportage and research; makes me wonder, what is the writer trying to hide, because what is so important about this story gets lost; obscured by the maddening overexplanation and baroque rendering of items, details, people and events. Is all this necessary? What do you leave in and what do you leave out? I would say, from what I read, leave out half of it. Talese, maybe it's his father's fault, wants to spend half a year, in reality it took him something like thirteen years to produce this book, making a custom made suit that he spends countless hours tearing out and restiching, redesigning, etc. What he ends up with is no better than something store bought. I think what is mainly missing from this work is an essentiall passion. Let me explain. I think Talese has it, or how else could he devote so much time and effort to this project, but he has successfully killed it. He gets so lost in his own brilliance that he fails to tell a good story. This is a dead book, kind'a like a beautiful flower preserved; the color faded, with no scent. The book doesn't live and I could'nt read it, and as any kind of example of creative non-fiction, or literary journalism, I have to go against most of the reviews of the book. I wouldn't call it a waste of time but I want something where the author hasn't killed the drama of the story with mortifying detail and unnecessary sidebars.

Like most everyone who lives in the United States, our ancestral heritage may contain an assortment of interesting stories of people, places and events that make us who we are today. The heritage of Gay Talese is yet another of those interesting stories. Talese chronicles his family's past . The majority of the tale discusses the effects of World War I and II on both his and his extended family in his former home of southern Italy.

Dear reader must be prepared for two major overbearing characteristics of this book. First, the paperback novel is more than six hundred pages of small print. Second, this book is published under the auspices of being questionably "non-fiction." One may find much of the book required a large degree of imagination to recreate actual conversations and events. Like any other person who is affected by world events, we may only surmise how history has influenced our own individual positions. Although the book is in some ways informative, it is as much an opinionated characterization of facts. Sadly, the ending doesn't so much as conclude, as it just runs out of steam. Even with all of these downfalls, it remains an informative and interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars Unto the Sons.......2001-03-04

As an Italian reader I found this book very involving and enjoyable.

It's a passionate, well written story of emigration, and it's a story about roots and identity.

In my opinion the only fault of this book is that it isn't the story of the whole family, but only of half of it.

The Talese saga depicts a world crowded with very interesting and well-portrayed male characters. It's the story of their dreams and their disappointments, of their failures and their achievements and of the risks they dared to take in the struggle for a better life in the old and in the new world throughout a century. It's a story about the troubles of a double loyalty and, to some extent, it's a journey home.

And I must say I found very interesting to look at a piece of italian history through the eyes of a second generation Italian-American.

In sharp contrast, the female characters are pale ghosts, barely sketched shadows wandering in the narrow space of an old house, of a narrow Southern Italian village, of an American store. Even Ippolita, the grand-grandmother, the only non-conventional woman of the family, remains hidden to us. And I happened to wonder whether Talese is not able to find anything really worthy of attention in these women and in their lives, portrayed as just spent in the shadow of their men (fathers, husbands, sons), or if they live in a world of their own, completely impenetrable to him. Whatever the answer, Talese seems to be aware of this imbalance: the title of the book is "Unto the Sons" and the sons are the male children.

5 out of 5 stars An epic tale.......2000-06-08

This is a sweeping epic about an Italian family. Gay Talese has a rich family history and he tell's their story (in a way it is his story) with the voice of a novelist.

There are many characters who might appear uniteresting if we were to "meet them on the street," but Talese's ability to get under their skin, as it were, gives them individuality, personality and humanity. And this is the story of the characters: it is not contrived by the author--though, of course, he tailers their stories to fit HIS book.

This is not a romanticized tale. Sometimes it is dark, with stern, superstitious ancestors and bleak events. Yet when it was over I felt a warmth for most of the characters in it.

This is the epic of many Americans. My own ancestors had many similar experiences. My ancestors are fairly recent German and Swedish immigrants, but much of their story is the story of the Talese family. It is the story of our own individuality striving against our heritage and either coming to terms with it or rejecting it.

Gay Talese has helped my understand myself in terms of my own heritage through this excellent book.

Not a bad book for a once through. Certainly not something you have read before. Gets a little dan brown in the first few pages but levels off afterward. I find it possible that the book looses something in the third part after being supposed translated from the original language to french to english. If you're reading this just buy it.
