Reality vs. a dream.......2005-08-17
Douglas Faulkner has a dream that after his death his wife marries his best friend (Rev. James Nevill). He believes the dream and becomes distant toward his wife. Sure enough he dies and Nevill and his wife wish to marry. Both have doubts, though, because of the dream (Nevill wonders if he loved and desired Faulkner's wife long before he died) - though the actual dream is not revealed to us until the end of the book, which keeps the suspense high. A fairly average effort for Howells.

This paper incorporates Immanuel Kant's duty-based system of ethics into the neoclassical model of rational choice. We briefly summarize the most relevant aspects of Kant's ethics, focusing on his distinction between perfect and imperfect duties. We then explain how each one can fit easily into economists' conception of decision-making, which will allow economic models of choice to include a wider variety of ethical motivations beyond the typical egoism or utilitarianism implicitly assumed.

A conflicted "World".......2003-07-04
Perhaps no fictional world has inspired as much art as J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth. Unfortunately, a lot of it stinks. The good art is excellent, but plenty is mediocre or just awful, rough-looking futuristic stuff that seems utterly alien to Tolkien's work.
John Howe's have the vividity and beauty we expect from him, especially his outstanding picture of Gandalf that inspired the Peter Jackson movie's Gandalf; Alan Lee's are more ethereal and colorless, but still beautiful (especially his Luthien painting). Nasmith's are usually quite good; they're not as good as Howe or Lee, but head and shoulders above average. Goldsmith is fairly good, not exceptional.
Michael's Hague's are mediocre, lacking in imagination and sparkle but serviceable. Robert Garland's paintings range between the exquisite (his lovely "Smith" picture) and the cartoonish (his eye-popping "Haven" picture); the same is true of Edelfeldt, who is divided between bad and good. Phenix and Galuidi are just awful, garishly colored and totally unrealistic. Galuidi's Saruman looks like a picture for a D&D game, and his Barad-dur looks like a cheap scifi cover.
Each painting is accompanied by a relevant quote or piece of verse, usually an excerpt from the book in question (not just "The Hobbit" or "Lord of the Rings," but other books as well). There are some nice bits of artwork in this book, but only buy it if you can't find Nasmith, Lee, Howe or Goldsmith anywhere else.
Good; some of the paintings inspired Peter Jackson's vision.......2003-07-02
This is a collection of 50+ paintings based on various works by Tolkien, which fans of Tolkien will no doubt enjoy. It may be of speial interest to those who watched the movies (and who hasn't, who read Tolkien...) as you can clearly see how some of these paintings are replicated in Jackson's movies; it takes but a moment to catch it in the film, but if you see the pictures enough you'll recognize it.
The quality of the paintings are uneven, and each one has its favorite. Like many people, I find Hague lacking, but also Edelfeldt, who isn't bad but whose style is not unique enough in my opinion.
My favorites, on the other hand, are Howe, Garland, Nasmith, Lee and Galuidi. Garland, my favorite, has a unique and glowing, almost 'mystical' style that does the book justice. Howe's pictures are also intriguing and beautiful, and feel true to the book (and thankfully, he seems to dominate the book in terms of the number of contributions). Nasmith has some splendid landscape pictures, though his vision of the characters leave something to be desired (especially of a fat, distorted Boromir!) Galuidi's sci-fi, computerized style may not appeal to some, but I find them interesting. Finally, Lee's soft watercolors are very appealing, and his vision of the characters is near-perfect (especially Galadriel and Gandalf).
Something for everyone.......2003-06-26
While everyone has their own taste and surely will not like the work of every author included, there is something here for everyone that is a Middle Earth fan. Most notably I find the work of Ted Nasmith, John Howe, Alan Lee, and Robert Goldsmith enjoyable. A big bonus as a fan of the History of Middle Earth and the Silmarillion were the images from those times by John Howe and Roger Garland.

This was recommended to me by a former sommelier, and with good reason--this is a book about the way wine should be in the larger scheme of things. Think beyond Kendell-Jackson Chardonnay and Yellow Tail Shiraz. Wine reflects a time and place, not sugar craving. Osborne is a terrific writer, but not a wine expert, and that's exactly what makes this book so engaging. Highly recommended.
Stuck up or right on?.......2006-01-24
The Accidental Connoisseur is such a well written, well informed, and personal account of one man's love of worthwhile food and wine that the only way anyone interested in the topic might be put off by the book is if they have a problem with the personality of writer, bon vivant, and accidental connoisseur Lawrence Osborne.
Unfortunately, to many Americans, Mr. Osborne may come across as a bit pompous. But if that misunderstanding takes place, it is just because he is what I will ambiguously term A British Man From A Certain Social Class. I don't know if he has a public school (i.e. prep school) background, but my guess is he does. Oxbridge is likely. And if that's true, it means he uses a vocabulary and draws parallels that may seem designed to show off his well-rounded education. That doesn't bother me, and I in fact considered it part of the book's charm -- especially when mixed with healthy doses of friendly self-deprecation, deadpan dry humor, and an erudite writing style that are also trademarks of the South Kensington-type crowd with similar social distinctions.
So step one to figuring out whether or not you'll enjoy this book is to determine whether or not you will appreciate that kind of writing. If you think you will, then there really isn't a step two -- except maybe clicking on the "add to shopping cart" tab you'll notice on the upper right-hand side of this page.
The book is made up of a series of 11 adventures the Quixotic Mr. Osborne conducts, covering the world's greatest wine-growing areas. The thread that ostensibly connects these adventures is that Mr. Osborne is trying to understand the world of wine better: Is any wine really worth hundreds of dollars? Can you really taste the characteristics of the land where the grapes were grown in the wine? What makes certain combinations of food and wine better than others? What makes a great wine great?
My guess is that Mr. Osborne figured out the answers to a lot of his questions by the end of his journeys. And what's nice about it is that with The Accidental Connoisseur, we can come along for the ride.
An irreverent and humorous approach to wine.......2005-07-20
This book is easy to read--a common-sense book that looks at the puffery of the wine scene. I bought additional copies and gave them to a couple of wine-loving friends. Wish I could read a book of this caliber each month.

What an outstanding collection of information on the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer. A sine qua non for those wanting information on the vizsla: ancestory, breeding, history, personality, behavior, mood, training, feeding, grooming, health care. Mr. Coffman covers every aspect, from interesting general knowledge to practical information and advice. I have owned a vizsla for a year and this book has enhanced the enjoyment of my the dog as an animal, a pet and a extraordinary companion. If you are contemplating acquiring a vizsla or are an owner looking for insight and guidance, I recommend this book to you as being well worth the price.

This book was right on target with my new Vizsla puppy. It has tons of information, including breed history, AKC standard, growth guidelines, etc. I gave this book 4 stars because it included pictures, but they weren't in color. I feel that for the price, they could've included a few color pictures. This book really sums up the breed very well. I would recommend it to any new Vizsla owner!

This is a well conceived and well written book. It is concise but contains more than ample expert information and opinion on raising and owning this breed of dog. I have compared it with other "dog-advice" works and recommend it highly.

This is a good book for someone who wants to learn more about the breed! It may seem to be small, but it's packed with information-a great value for the price. If you want to learn more about training your dog, then you may want to purchase another book for more specifics.

This book was extremely helpful to me when I got my first Vizsla Dog. It answered MANY questions for me on some issues I was rather confused about or just didn't know at all. This book is not really "fun" to read or look at but it has wonderful information in it
Hard core book on Vizlas - not a coffee table book.......1999-09-19
This book is a must have for someone who is interested in the background of the breed but it is not an easy or fun read. More of a reference book with old, sometimes grainy photographs (there are some bizarre ones like a V-dog happily holding a dead cross fox in its mouth). The hard core V-dog lover will want this for the bookshelf but I don't take it down to look at all that often. If you are looking for a book on Vizlas that is contemporary and full of color photos and advice on how to deal with this high maintenance breed in the modern world - this is not the book for you.
Beautiful cover, but not so inside........1999-02-18
This was my first Viszla book, ordered through a magazine. I expected color pictures inside, such as the one on front, or the ones in other dog books (about other breeds) that I own. All of the pictures were black and white. The text was informative, but boring. I'll probably return it.
There are better Vizsla books to be had........1998-11-25
This book is relatively informative, but it is somewhat short and the format is not too interesting. We returned our copy of The Complete Vizsla for The Versatile Vizsla.

Cliff Boggs has been working with Vislas for some forty years, and his depth of knowledge is well worth any hassle you may have to go through to get a copy of either editions of his book . The chapters on history, and the pictures of early Vizslas are an education in themselves. This was the first book I bought on Vizslas back when I had just my first dog. While there is probably no perfect breed book(it would be too big to read)both of these books, edition one and two have breed information that any vizsla owner should have at their fingertips, especially if thinking of showing, trialing, or breeding. I recommend you get this, read it cover to cover, and then go out and buy all the other vizsla books!

Everything I needed to know about wood in America, specifically the Bybee Collection in Dallas. I am a native Houstonian, annual contributor to local fine arts museums as well as others worthy of praise and adoration. The Dallas Museum is definately one of them. Never before have I seen such an eclectic array of the finest wood of all centuries. I have been a collector since I was a child, handed down the most beautiful of wood furniture imagined. Well worth having in your collection.......1998-06-22
This book has a wealth of examples of excellent design elements. I can't wait to try out some of them. I particularly like the illustrations and descriptions of designs that needed a little more work to reach their full potential.
I hope we will see more works from this well-respected author.
Rich with design ideas, techniques, and great pictures........1998-06-16
This book is gratifyingly rich with ideas about techniques and ideas about designing, with lots of gorgeous pictures. Torrence offers inspiring guidance for the creative process of designing quilts and wearable art (or, indeed, any visual art).
The book explains several interesting techniques such as "collage curves," working with a design wall, designing with a single shape, and "improving the checkerboard," with "how-to's" on both design and execution. It is full of beautiful and colorful examples.
One chapter that I found especially thought-provoking is called "Help for Problem Quilts." It shows "before" photos of some less-than-overwhelming quilts and asks "what's wrong?" Each is accompanied by an "after" photo showing how its beauty, interest, and impact were improved, along with an explanation of the design principles that suggested the improvements, and the specific techniques used to execute them. This book is worth paging through over and over; it gives me new ideas every time.

For The Tyson Fan, The Tyson Hater & Everyone Interested In The Tyson Story
Truly a great and encompassing book.
First - you should know that I am a big Mike Tyson enthusiast and supporter.
Iron Mike - A Mike Tyson Reader - is a compilation of stories written by different authors. The chapters go pretty much in chronological order of Tyson's life. From a touch on his childhood to the classic saga of Cus & The Kid to post Holyfield II.
You get different perspectives of Tyson from those that see him in different ways. You get the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly.
I felt that a lot of what is covered in the book was pretty fair and balanced (to borrow a phrase). I really appreciated and got a lot out of the different views and different interpretations of Tyson from those who knew him in different avenues of his life.
I went into reading this with a sympathetic view of Mike and this view was reinforced and I was actually given more insight into the hardships that he has had to face as a kid and as an adult.
You would think that with his money and fame how could he have such a hard time, well this book does a good job in showing you how.
What stands out for me is the rape conviction. He had a horrible lawyer - Don King's tax attorney, certain witnesses weren't allowed to testify, certain evidence was not admitted and let's admit it - if he was a Kennedy (see William Kennedy Smith) he wouldn't have gone to jail.
There are some extremely interesting chapters in this that are genuinely eye opening into just how unfairly Mike Tyson has treated and taken advantage of.
Highly recommended to any boxing fan and especially recommended for anyone interested in the story of Tyson - fan or hater - you'll learn something.
Finally.......2002-06-23
Well, this book is the best all around book I have seen on Iron Mike, and believe me I have seen and read them all. It finally gives an extensive look on this complex individual. Mike is a genius whose greatness may never be understood for years to come. Every quote you you've ever read about him or interview you have ever seen has been doctored to portray him has a brutal, ignorant bully. But in truth he is a very introverted, intelligent, and compassionate human being. But, the media needs a villain so consequently we have an amazing misunderstanding of who the man really is. This book pulls no punches and shows both sides of this often troubled and victimized individual. Be Real Mike and never give up your goal of regaining your belts.
