Cambridge English Prose Texts consists of volumes devoted to selections of non-fictional English prose of the late sixteenth to the mid nineteenth centuries. The series provides students, primarily though not exclusively those of English literature, with the opportunity of reading significant prose writers who, for a variety of reasons (not least their generally being unavailable in suitable editions), are rarely studied, but whose influence on their times was very considerable. Marilyn Butler’s volume centres on the great Revolution debate in England in the 1790s, inspired by the French Revolution. The debate consists of a single series of works which depend for their meaning upon one another, and upon the historical situation which gave them birth. Major tracts by Burke (Reflections on the Revolution in France), Paine (The Rights of Man), and Godwin (Enquiry Concerning Political Justice) are given at length, while important shorter pieces by such writers as Hannah More, Thomas Spence, and William Cobbett appear virtually complete. The volume is especially interesting for its portrait of a community of oppositional writers. Many of them knew one another personally, and stimulated and sustained one another against the pro-government majority. Their collaborative literary enterprise, and its break up, offer a fascinating perspective on Romanticism and the growth of an extra-parliamentary opposition functioning through the press. The volume also reveals the impact of the great debate on writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Coleridge, and Wordsworth. As with other titles in the series, the volume is comprehensively annotated: obscure allusions to people, places, and events are glossed in footnotes and endnotes, while prefactory headnotes comment on the circumstances surrounding the composition of each extract. In a substantial introduction Dr Butler offers a broad examination of this pamphlet war and its main participants. There is a helpful critical guide to further reading for those wishing to pursue their study of the subject. The volume will be a vital sourcebook for students of English Romantic literature, history, and political history.

Daredevil finally gets some respect..........2003-03-17
This is a really tight book. Daredevil has always been a cool character that no one (besides Miller) ever really seemed to "get" (and the lackluster movie won't help). But Mr. Golden really gave it to him. This is book is constantly exciting and tense. I would have liked to have more with the Kingpin, but he isn't a main point of the book. The Gladiator sub-plot feels useless, as there is no real meaning to it and the reasoning behind it is weak. But, this book DOES have Bullseye (one of the coolest characters EVER), and that always means it'll be interesting. Here are my rankings:
1) Daredevil: Predator's Smile
2) Hulk: What Savage Beast
3) Fantastic Four: To Free Atlantis
4) Iron Man: Armor Trap (forgot about this one last time, sorry)
5) Ultimate Spider-Man
6) Spider-Man: Carnage in New York
7) all the other ...ones
One of the best comic to novel books around.......2003-02-25
First off, no book is perfect so, no one gets five stars. This
one however, deserves at least four and 1/2 stars.
Golden is on the money with this story. DD is presented in all
his dark, brooding, [...]kicking glory. As others have written,
the supporting characters are well done and true to 'life'.
Personally, the high point for me is the villians. The Kingpin
is an ultra-confident mastermind and Golden writes him that way.
Bullseye is perfect and is exactly what Frank Miller created. Completely insane and deadly to the extreme.
As a whole, this book ranks behind the novelizations of Kingdom
Come and No Man's Land but, better than everything else by far.
Absolutley Astounding! D.D. kicks a$$ in "Hell's Kitchen".......2002-01-17
This book was incredible! I read a few reviews on this book and it sounded decent. I picked it up at the local public library one morning... and finished it that night!
Golden does an excellent job with character development. I liked that D.D. must reluctantly go to the one man who nearly destroyed his life and wrecked his Law Firm for help...Wilson Fisk a.k.a The Kingpin! Bullseye is portrayed as he should be,heartless and ruthless. Golden colorfully depicts the human aspects of Matt Murdock/D.D. and his inner turmoil between his dual identities. Great cast of characters Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, Kingpin, Bullseye, and... a reformed "Gladiator". The climax is gripping and wraps up the story in a nice, tight package. Very intense, bloody fight between 'ol Hornhead and Bullseye in the end.
I now own this book. It's out of print and can be hard to get, but you MUST, AT ALL COSTS, read this book! Daredevil fan or not, it will NOT fail you. If you can, buy it. You WILL read it more than once! I have.

Bullseye just plain rocks. I usually only read Daredevil stuff with Bullseye in it for that simple reason, it has Bullseye in it. Bullseye, is undoubtedly, the coolest villian out there and this just shows how plain ruthless he is. The book now has me hooked to Daredevil and I am an avid fan of the comic book. The Prologue will have you hooked in mere minutes and you will remain hooked until you have finished it. A Daredevil classic.
One of Golden's Marvel Master Pieces.......1998-01-31
This is a thrilling non stop great book. I dont care if you are not a DD fan read this book its awsome. This was my first encounter with DareDevil and now I am a fan for life. Golden's a master at bringing chracter's to life and writing great storys. Other recomended Christopher Golden books are the X-Men:Mutant Empire Trilogy.

I came to this from John Maddox Roberts' sophisticated SPQR series, set in ancient Rome, and was disappointed by the drop in quality. I thought perhaps the two writers just needed more time to get used to one another -- but this is their fourth book together, though the first with these characters.
The first error was surely not the fault of the authors, whom one assumes were mortified. On page 11, the protagonist goes on about how he prefers reporters with scientific backgrounds, who won't make mistakes that are then attributed to him. The very next paragraph identifies an aircraft as a "Cesna" rather than a "Cessna." The simple typo wouldn't be so blush-worthy were it not juxtaposed with the protagonist's barbed remarks about technical accuracy.
Overall, I liked the science and particularly enjoyed the global socio-economic aspects of the plot, but was disappointed by three things in its execution:
***A. the level of cliché -- the beautiful-but-covertly-brainy reporter with martial arts skills (once they made this character Asian, the chop-socky was inevitable), the bravura capitalism (there's the Heinlein for you), the effete Frenchman, the freakish but omnipotent hacker recluse, the wicked Eastern Bloc assassin, the stoic Native American bodyguard, the good-old-boy Texan who gotta-gonna solve the world's oil problem. The authors waited until page 229 before making the inevitable "Cowboy & Indian" remark, bless them, and they did take a few baby steps away from the stereotypes, but baby steps are not enough when great strides are called for.
***B. it REEKED of screenplay, so why bother with the book at all? And it would be quite a successful movie, say with Bruce Willis and Lucy Liu, so why waste time in New York when they could have taken the outline directly to Hollywood?
***C. the unsubtle foreshadowing of what would come next in the series -- but there's been no "next" yet, though five years have passed, so perhaps there will be no series, after all.
If you like James Bond, if you like the older Heinlein novels, if you're secretly hot for Ayn Rand, you'll like this very much. If they'd had the guts to scramble their stereotypes a little -- how about making the love interest a she-geek hermit who is NOT beautiful? Or try out an assassin made bitter by her failure to advance in the U.S. military, or a Frenchman who's not a pantywaist, and let the Native American be the wealthy scientist-entrepreneur instead of Tonto -- etc., etc. -- I might have liked it very much, too.
Great thriller!.......2003-08-10
Legacy is a great thriller with plenty of technical meat. The novel offers a realistic scenario--indeed, a functional description--of how the global economy may shift from fossil fuel to solar power. You immediately sense that you are reading the work of a world-class astrophysicist.
The book offers memorable scenes. The space-walk scene and the wounding by space junk was a gem. The martial arts scenes are excellent. Enjoy this book.
Mediocre Science Fiction.......2002-09-24
In this novel, as in reality, oil is becoming scarce, so this gives incentive to an international race to put a solar energy satellite into geostationary orbit to beam energy down to earth. This may actually happen someday, but mabe not, if it does it is decades off, at least.
I found the character development to be sketchy at best, with the plot amateurish at times. The ending was abrupt, with the whole novel being a bit too brief. It was not a page turner for me, however I have read worse science fiction than this. According to the cover on this book one of the authors, Eric Kotani, is a pseudonym for a world-class astrophysicist, so there is some actual science included here so not all is lost, it is informative to some extent, but for me it just did'nt have the 'fire' other science fiction I have read did.
Good start for a series! More, please!.......2000-10-04
I was first drawn to "Legacy" because of the premise of the solar power farming using satellites, a concept that inspired me 20 years ago to give up a dead end life style and go back to school. It was a senior project done by the Aerospace school at the University of Michigan named "Project Rodan", I believe.
The character development is wonderful with believable business and government senarios. The wheeling and dealing at the highest level reminds me of the Heinlein novels where money was secondary and vision and persistance win out over deceit and treachary.
My only complaint is that there seem to be a few chapters missing. These team of characters are too good to leave hanging out there... especially when a "first contact" may be eminent.

I thought this book was brilliant, John Maddox Roberts is a class writer anyway ( having read ALL of his SPQR series), and although I liked the SPQR series ( save the last book "Ships of Kleopatra") more, this is still a brilliant read !

This book really is "The Complete Book of Sauces". It would be hard to imagine what sauce recipe ISN'T in it. Not only does it contain virtually any kind of sauce recipe you could want, but it offers helpful ideas on what to serve with what. Also, the recipes are "doable" rather than some I've seen in other books that are so complex no one but a professional chef would even attempt them. In addition, the price was right, and it arrived very promptly in pristine condtion.

Numerous variations to try in a lifetime!.......2000-11-06
There are definitely more sauces in this book than you can possibly try. They are divided and arranged by type and purpose, which makes it easy to pick out the sauce that you need. Some of the ingredients are somewhat hard to find, but most recipes can be prepared with minimal fuss. My favorite part of this book is the marinades chapter.. you can combine a marinade with a similar sauce and end up with something spectacular. Another useful chapter is the fruit sauces chapter, which proved to be very valuable on that special occasion when you wanted to enhance the flavor of your desserts. No photos in this book though.

This book is excellent, I have had success with every recipe I've tried. I refer to this book almost on a daily basis to make my dishes more interesting. If you buy only one sauce book this is the one to buy.

It's now Oct 1998. I bought the book in 1990 when it first came out. I'm a business man, not a gourmet, but with this Sallie Williams book, polite lovely ladies have almost tackled me to get 'my recipes'. I have fun cooking because of this book, more than with any other cookbook. I pick a meat or vegetable, and pick a sauce. It always works, and leaves me feeling like I'm creating by selecting the combination of some dish with a sauce, plus dreaming up ways to display the food. So far it never seems to get boring, and after nine years there are still a lot of sauces I've not yet tried. I think the book will be with me for the duration. Highly recommended. The only downside is that 'favorite' sauces are easy to find in the book, and thus you have to avoid the temptation to stop exploring sauces not yet experienced.

I love this book! It has so many great ideas, and not just for plain old lettuce... great suggestions for fish, chicken, fruit, etc. I love the fact that it describes different vinegars, oils, lettuces... it gives you a better understanding of what flavours go well together. Very informative. The recipes are simple and quick to prepare as well. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who is looking to expand beyond oil & vinegar.

I had tried to use my usual stock of cook books (i.e. NY Times, JOC, etc) but found them wanting in this department. Since purchasing this book I have received many compliments on the variety of my dressings. Although I was often complimented before obtaining this resource--this really expanded my repertoire.

This is a wonderful book! It is well organized and contains lots of ideas for variations. Each recipe lists the nutritional values, and there are many recipes that fit easily into a low fat/calorie diet. The author explains what purpose each ingredient serves, and also discusses substitutions and their consequences. Each recipe is on a separate page and are formatted so they are easy to read. Nice use of artwork and variation of fonts, if you like that. I do. This book is a bargain, too!
Dressings for nearly any food, not just salads........1998-08-24
This book provides more information than just dressing recipes. The author gives useful suggestions for creating interesting salads, how to buy and store ingredients, and nutritional information for each recipe. I'm planning on making good use of this book.

Written by a very old trainer with the old "make your dog do it or else" attitude. What fun is this for the dog?
Motivational training has come a long way in the past 30 years, but this author has chosen to totally ignore new and more humane methods of dog training.
If you used some of these training "tricks" in modern obedience classes, you'd be asked to leave the class - or else they'd call the cops on you.
Cruel training methods and a lot of bad advice, all in one book. What a bargain!

Sorry, this book is total garbage. It was written as a cutsie atempt to package old training techs. that didn't work very well in a new shiny package to line the author's pocket.
If you've attended *one* basic obedience class anywhere, you know more than the author - save you money, there are tons of good books about dog tricks. This is not one of them, however!

Repeats of recent BH&G crochet magazine patterns.......2007-09-08
If you already have the recent issues of BH&G's Easy Crochet, don't get this book! I have seen most (if not all) the patterns in the magazine. I was so disappointed I wasn't getting some new patterns. And my favorite ones aren't even in there, although the Juliet cap and bolero on the cover are truly beautiful. There are not a lot of patterns in the "easy" category, so if you don't already get the magazine and are an experienced crocheter, you might like this book. But don't get TOO excited. The book is rather thin. It only contains 13-14 patterns, and is bound like a magazine, although slicker.
The upside to the book (in addition to the Juliet cap and bolero) is a great crocheted dress, but like many other crocheted dresses, it will need a full slip.

A Review: One man show and tell.......2000-07-26
This beautiful publication makes you feel fortunate to live in an era when hardbound books filled with juicy pictures printed on quality paper stock are still here for the wonder of our minds and hands. For some reason the multifaceted brilliant artist Bruce Conner is not very well known outside rarefied circles of experimental film-o-philes or assemblage art fans, and this book should go a long way to correct such an egregious oversight. The essays are substantive, intelligent, and lure readers into discoveries about the works of this compelling character, and the design of the book is a joy, filled with many cinematic touches and liberally sprinkled with gorgeous color reproductions. Highly recommended.

Lots of information about Mandela.......2007-08-12
I hate leaving a book less than 5 stars, I really do. The book has lots of information and important facts about Mandela, but the problem I have is "ease of readability." There were so many things I just couldn't understand due to the author's extremely large vocabulary and phrasing. I suppose maybe that's my fault on some level, but the phrasing was so difficult I only grasped a small percentage of the book. Yes, there are lots of photos. Yes, there are handwritten pages Mandela wrote from his cell (none of which I could legibly read), as well as tons of dates and credits to acknowledgements. Unfortunately, I've decided to leave this book on the shelf.
A Beacon of Promise in a Troubled Continent.......2006-12-21
Nelson Mandela stands as a Beacon in South Africa, Africa, and the rest of the world as an example of what a political leader should be. Not only was he largely responsible for the 'one person one vote' changes in South Africa, but then after he was elected president he served one term and retired. This is very un-politician like. Especially in the third world politicians seem to stay in office until they die. Then again, there was FDR in this country.
This is a splendid book. It is profusely illustrated, and not quite a biography so much as a tribute. There are dozens of comments, interviews, documents from the time, historical reports and so on that record his struggle.
Mandela did marvelous things, great things. I wonder though what will be the story of South Africa after he and his legacy are gone. There are political movements afoot there who preach that the whites should all be kicked out, that their property should be confiscated, and that South Africa will be like the rest of Africa in poverty and misery.

British journalist Anthony Sampson first met Nelson Mandela in 1951, when Sampson was editing a black magazine in Johannesburg, and his biography of the leader benefits greatly from his long familiarity with South Africa and his access to the 81-year-old statesman's unpublished letters and documents. These are particularly helpful in chronicling Mandela's political and spiritual odyssey during 27 years in prison, when the fiery anti-apartheid militant condemned to life imprisonment in 1964 evolved into a dignified, authoritative leader convinced that "reconciliation would be essential to survival." The life of Nelson Mandela is one of the most extraordinary epics of the twentieth century. An almost-forgotten prisoner on Robben Island twenty years ago, apparently doomed to a helpless existence as a victim of apartheid, he not only survived but almost single-handedly saved South Africa from potential chaos, to become one of the most widely admired leaders in the world. Mandela's myth is dazzling; in this magnificent biography Anthony Sampson penetrates it to show us the man himself.
Sampson has known Mandela since 1951. He was given Mandela's complete cooperation, including access to twenty-seven years' worth of unpublished correspondence from prison and many other private documents--even the original draft of Mandela's prison autobiography, long thought to be lost. He interviewed virtually every significant living figure associated with Mandela, from childhood schoolmates to Mandela's ex-wife, Winnie, to former president F. W. de Klerk. Mandela himself checked and annotated the manuscript, but Sampson was left free to make his own judgments about the man, which he has done with refreshing candor. The result is wonderfully revealing and objective.
Mandela is filled with new insights and information. Amazing life of imprisonment to leadership!.......2001-01-13
What an amazing life this man had. He was born on the rural plains in South Africa.. His father was absent due to forced circumstances. Mandela later received an education in law and began the practice of law. Political causes led to his imprisonment for nearly thirty years in Robbins Prison. The book tells the wrenching tale of his separation of his family during his imprisonment, yet the family (the second marriage, to Winnie) remained intact during his long imprisonment and only dissolved after the release from prison. The book is very heavy on the political activity in whch Mandela was involved. This is an interesting book of personal triumph over overwhelming odds.
More than you ever wanted to know .........2000-06-01
The author obviously knows a great deal about Mandela and South Africa. However, there is so much detail that I found the book just deadening over time. The writing style was not engaging enough to sustain me through all the blow-by-blow accounts that one has to plod through . -I was surprised and disappointed that the book was not more enjoyable.
A well-told education in character and leadership........1999-10-21
If you believe there are no modern heroes - that fortitude and unselfish judgement in the face of adversity are out-of-date virtues, you need to read this book. That Sampson shows the whole man so well (with admittedly a few frailities) adds depth to the tremendous courage, excellent judgement, and magnanimity Mandela demonstrated his entire life, even when the cause of the ANC he led seemed hopeless. Along the way the book gives an excellent view of South African history during Mandela's adulthood. If you are not very familiar with Mandela or South Africa you might do better to start with Mandela's own book, "Long Walk to Freedom" which doesn't cover quite so much ground and is more on a human scale. Both books are inspiring.
A very good introduction to a deep man.......1999-09-30
If you need to know Nelson Mandela, this is the book to read. This book's weaknesses are evident: It is written from a British viewpoint, and basically takes for granted a knowledge of South African history and geography most Americans do not possess (though they should). It also soft pedals the problems in Mandela's relationship with Winnie, though that is understandable. I have a feeling that not too many people could understand it. But it does a great job of making us see how the man was shaped and became what he is, and how he stands as a fearless, remarkable leader.

I knew very little of Nelson Mandela before reading this book, but now I am confident that I have an excellent feel for what makes this man tick. This is an excellent book and one that should be read by anyone who wants to be inspired!
