Book Description

Three of Garcia Marquez's classic short novels--Leaf Storm, No One Writes to the Colonel, and Chronicle of a Death Foretold--available in one volume.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gabo is great from the beginning.......2004-03-01

LEAF STORM:

'Leaf Storm' is known as the first novella published by Gabriel García Márquez. And from this debut is possible to see how big he would become one day. This book tells a very simple story that acquires multiple levels as it is told.

After the death of an infamous doctor of Macondo his only friends, this friend's daughter and her son gather to the funerals. The dead man is known as the devil and everyone hates him. His death made the city very happy. As the story is unfolded, we learn why he's so hated and how come the threesome ended up there to mourn him.

Using multiple points of views, Gabo gives the three protagonists chances to speak to themselves and we can find out how dreadful is to each of one be there. The writer is able to switch the point of view, and also the language --after all, a little boy does not speak as an old man. This is one of the remarkable qualities of this wonderful novella.

This is the very first time that the imaginary place Macondo appears in Gabo's story and it became a seminal place of his stories --among them the masterpiece 'A Hundred years of solitude'.

4 out of 5 stars Two out of three ain't bad........2003-03-04

The less said about 'Leaf Storm,' the better, I think. It was Garcia Marquez's first piece of long fiction, written in his twenties, and the truth is, it's not very good. Actually, it's pretty bad. It's overwritten in that 'bad Faulkner' way, and it lacks anything that would make for an interesting story--compelling characters, powerful conflicts, interesting ideas--none of these are to be found therein. It feels as if it should have received quite a bit of revision before publication. As it stands, its only real value is as an embryonic draft of One Hundred Years of Solitude.

'No One Writes to the Colonel,' on the other hand, is a truly excellent story. It's a slow, meditative piece with very little action, chronicling a month or so in the life of the title character and his wife in a stagnant Colombian town as he waits in vain for the pension, which he has been owed for fifteen years, to arrive in the mail. Although it's a subdued story saturated with sorrow and regret, it also features a strong undercurrent of hope which cannot be extinguished. The Colonel is an inspiring character, and, after One Hundred Years of Solitude, his story is my favorite thing I've read by Garcia Marquez. Apparently there's been a movie made of it, but I have no desire to see it.

'Chronicle of a Death Foretold' is also very good. It tells of the events surrounding and leading up to a brutal murder which ultimately implicates an entire town. Featuring the recollections of dozens of characters who were involved in the event, peripherally or seriously, it weaves a mesmerizing web of small events that all happen just the wrong way. The death is indeed 'foretold;' it could easily have been prevented by just about anyone in the story, yet somehow, no one does. In spite of knowing what's going to happen from the beginning, the story remains riveting, and even suspenseful, throughout. Don't miss it.

This volume is certainly a must-own for Garcia Marquez fans. Combined with Collected Stories, it includes the entire body of his early short fiction--so don't buy Leaf Storm and Other Stories, No One Writes to the Colonel and Other Stories, Innocent Erdendira and Other Stories, or Chronicle of a Death Foretold. They're redundant. No sense flinging money out windows, eh? Cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Great Affordable Collection.......2000-03-20

Here between the bounds of this paperback we have 3 very good translations of short novels from the hand of Marquez...although I have yet to fully grasp "Leaf Storm", it does offer to the reader a sort of prelude to "Macondo"...although don't expect the world to be potrayed as it was in "One Hundred years of Solitude". ...the 2nd novella "No One Writes Colonel" is a great read...here is everyday life, as the colonel awaits a letter...however it is the third novella, "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" that drew me in, as a gripping page turner. Marquez holds our interest with his detailed account, even though we already know the outcome. It is a great collection and a good follow up if you have finished "One Hundred Years of Solitude". Highly recommended because in this edition you get al three works, whilst you could pay up to thrice as much if you pursued them seperately....

4 out of 5 stars poor colonel.......2000-01-28

I read this novel which was written in spanish for part of my spanish A level course at school. I am now at university and have decided to do a topic about Garcia Marques as his work was so insperational to me. The novel portrays a poor mans strugle for survival and has a theme of poverty and deceipt running throughout the novel. The colonel is a symbol of hope whilst his wife is the complete opposite. The colonel waitsfor a letter that never arrives and at the end of the novel the colonel has to force himself to wake up to reality which is displayed by the ironic use of the word 'mierda' at the end of the novel. The imagery and language used in the novel is excellent and i would definatly recommend this novel.

      Book Description

Garth of Ordunin had been set a new task by the Forgotten King: Bring back to Skelleth whatever he found upon the altars of the seven temples of Dusarra. As he went about his blasphemous errand he learned more about the Dark Gods -- and more about his own destiny!

4 out of 5 stars On the Road Again.......2005-01-26

Garth the Overman and Korg the trusty warbeast are back in Skelleth, this time to try to establish a trade mission that could be of great importance to the inhabitants of the Northern Waste. Initially Korg and some of his relatives have great success, but Korg once again has a run in with the Baron of Skelleth. After their last conflict the Baron would like nothing better than Garth's head, but seeing some opportunity, he instead insists that Garth swear fealty in return for trading rights. Anyone who knpws overmen will tell you that isn't going to work. Garth, furious at the Baron's impertinence, sits down with the King in Yellow again and hammers out a deal.

The King wants whatever Garth finds on the seven altars of Dussara and promises that carrying out that task will give Garth what he wants in Skelleth in the process. Even Garth has figured out that deals with the King in Yellow always have a hitch to them - and proceeds cautiously. This time the trip is less harrowing with only one village on that way, one with an annoying prophecy. Soon Garth is in the night city of Dusarra, planning his thefts.

Seven alters with gems, potential victims and, yes, even dust, are all that lie between Garth and victory over the Baron of Skelleth. For Garth, who has teetered on the edge of crisis since leaving the northern wastes, they are seven opportunities for disaster and there is more than a little question about whether either Garth of Dusarra will survive.

This is the second volume is a series that will eventually be referred to as 'The Lords of Dus.' Watt-Evans shows a surer footing in this telling about the Prince of a magically created people who have been exiled for 350 years to the northern wastes. Garth wants to make a difference in his world, but it not entirely clear on how to go about it. His adventures in the first volume lead him to return to the world below and Watt-Evans has created a second, light-hearted, story that under line the problems that can occur when cultures clash in unexpected places.

Watt-Evan's writes well, although he tends to over engineer his action, and relies too much on descriptive passages to fill out his book. Since The Seven Altars of Dusarra is short, it never really bogs down. But every once in a while there is a hitch, as when the author spends too much time describing which hand he moves what object too while trying to do two things at once. Don't let that put you off though, this is a classic series, which is mostly for fun and the intriguing device of having an 'alien' creature as a main character. This is classic fantasy, with a twist.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing and masterfully done.......2004-07-28

Returning to the crumbling city of Skelleth, Garth the overman finds himself returning to the service of the Forgotten King. He is sent off to Dusarra, the city of the Dark Gods, to steal whatever lies on the altars of the seven gods of the city. But before long, Garth realizes that there is more to human religion than he thought. The age of the god of decay is coming to a close, and the time of the god of destruction awaits the coming of a mortal who will seize the god's sword and begin the Age of Destruction. Is Garth this new servant of destruction, and does he have a choice in the matter?

For many years now, I have been a great fan of Lawrence Watt-Evans' wonderful Ethshar series. Having finished all of the Ethshar books currently available, I moved on to his Lords of Dus series, and must say that I am quite happy! This book makes an excellent sequel to The Lure of the Basilisk, and is every bit as good as that one. This is a great fantasy story, complete with magic, strange creatures, and lots of swordplay. In particular, I found the author's use of a non-human as the protagonist to be quite intriguing and masterfully done.

So, if you are a fan of fantasy literature, then you must get this book. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The best book in an underrated series.......2000-04-04

This is the second of four books in the "Lords of Dus" series. A very under-appreciated fantasy series, in my opinion. While these books are neither as intricate nor as well written as many of the big names in fantasy, ("Lord of the Rings" for example) they are well thought out and very original stories with very memorable characters. Entertaining enough to be read several times, but straight-forward enough to be a reasonably quick read.

In this book, the main character, Garth the overman, is sent by the Forgotten King to steal whatever he finds on each of the Seven Altars of the Dark Gods in the city of Dusarra.

If you've never read the other books in this series, I recommend that you pick up "Lure of the Basilisk" first. But if you've read that one already, then I definitely recommend that you pick up this one as well. I consider this to be the best book in the series because it has a very straight forward story, but it is handled extremely well and moves at just the right pace. This book is never boring for a second.

        Book Description

Horses communicate with remarkable accuracy in a language of posture, gesture and sound. They express their needs, wishes and emotions to each other and to the rare human being who understands them. After reading this unprecedented, exciting and up-lifting book, you will understand the equine language. You therefore will know how to recognize:

A happy horse. A frightened horse. An angry horse. A bored horse. A grieving horse. A frustrated horse. A horse horse in pain. A playful horse. A proud horse. An eagerly competitive horse. And many horses more!

Moreover, you will know how to reassure the frightened, calm the angry, comfort the grieving, divert the bored -- and deal with most other human-equine difficulites. You will know how to educate a foal or rehabilitate a rogue. You will know how to look at race horses on their way to the starting gate and differentiate the likely winners from the losers.

You even will know how to buy a horse.

But best of all, you will finally understand what these grand animals are all about, and you will know better than ever before how they (and we) fit into nature's scheme of things.

5 out of 5 stars This book was a fantastic find!.......2007-02-09

Wow! There are 45 horses who are personal friends of mine, and after reading this book, I feel that I know them so much better now! I had already figured out many of their quirks and cute personality traits, and now I have a whole new insight. For example, now I understand that the reason Image is "attitudinal" is because his mama was lead mare when he was born, and he's not about to let anyone forget it. And Casanova is the "class clown" who, if he likes you, will entertain you for hours with his (sometimes annoying) antics like knocking the hat off my head, over and over again -- and if he doesn't like you, don't turn your back on him, or he'll nip you in the butt (but never hard), and by the time you turn around, he's looking the other way, as if to say, "Who did that? Not me!" There are stories in the book to match and top any I have to tell, including a senior horse who liked to play jokes on cows. It's a terrific read and very educational as well. If you are looking to buy a horse, there are tips for selecting one. And for those who enjoy horse racing, there are tips for betting on horses, based on observing their behavior before the race. There's something for everyone in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the short amount of time it takes to read--.......2006-11-27

I personally felt that this book is an awesome introduction to horses and their behavior. No, it does not go into great detail of body language, and it is not for the experienced horseman (I only bought this book because it was required for a class), BUT the book is worth your time. I think that this book offered an excellent perspective on undertanding the horse and why they do what they do. For example, just because the horse isn't doing what you want, doesn't necessarily mean that it's being a "bad" horse- there is an incredible array of things that could be the 'problem'; even though as I said this book will offer no new insights to experienced horsemen and women, it can be a very good reminder of why our horses do what they do. All in all, if you are a beginner to the horse world, pick this book up, and take a few hours to read it, it'll be worth the time and money.

4 out of 5 stars A different view on horses I've read thus this far........2006-06-28

I'm a young horse lover and I spend much more time reading and studying horses in books, magazines, and other sources of trustworthy media than I do actually experiencing these beautiful animals up close. Nor am I lucky enough to be able to regularly work with them. I recently received "The Body Language of Horses" and I have blazed through this small book and found that it is very informative, observant, and suitable towards an aspiring horsewoman or horseman. It gives out clear, though thick, digestible pieces of horse psychology and body language offering ways to understand and `connect' with the equine. I give it a rating of four stars out of five because there is further searching in different books about horse language I have yet to discover and the horses themselves.
        Thanks!
        Sarah

3 out of 5 stars The Body Language of Horses: Revealing the Nature..........2006-02-23

This is an excellent resource for a person who hasn't had much exposure to horses or has trouble interpreting the meaning of equine body language and sounds. Although, it was well written, and made some excellent points, it seemed quite basic and I didn't come to any new revalations about horses that would help or change my relationships with them.

2 out of 5 stars States the obvious and strays off-topic........2004-04-16

I was rather disappointed with this book for several reasons. First and foremost, the bulk of the book does not, as the title would have us believe, focus on the body language of horses. A couple of chapters devote themselves to brief descriptions of horse behavior under different circumstances (when happy, angry, frightened, bored, tired, hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, etc.), but the largest sections of the book concern curing problem horses and training foals. At the end there is a chapter on observing the body language of racehorses in order to pick winners, and two appendices on how to buy a horse.

Not only does the book stray from it's purported topic, but the information that IS given about equine body language is so basic and obvious that any true horseperson would already know it, and any aspiring horseperson could learn it all in a matter of a few weeks spent around the creatures. Of course a nervous horse will work up a sweat, a bored horse will get mouthy, and a horse that is irritated by a fly will swish its tail and twitch its skin. There are really only two forseeable uses, in my mind, for this book. The first is as a reference for those who know next to nothing about horses and wish to learn. The second, a slightly different version of the first, is as a guide to non-equestrian racegoers in order to pick winning horses on which to place their bets (and this is not surefire or guaranteed in any way, since pre-race behavior is only one of many factors that determines the outcome of a race).

The book is also considerably old, and a bit dated. It was written and first published in 1980, more than two decades ago. While the basic behavior of horses hasn't changed in that time, much else in the horse world has, including attitudes toward the care and training of horses. There are now many more effecting training methods than those presented here, and one passage in the book even alarmed me. Though they pronounce it a "dubious last resort," the authors nevertheless included the following method for "[teaching] manners to a resistant horse":

". . . dramatic effects are obtained by striking the animal over the poll bone with a fragile wine bottle filled with a slush of sand and warm water. When the bottle breaks and the warm, moist substance dribbles down its head, the savage horse becomes a trembling wreck. A gestured threat to repeat the treatment is usually enough to terminate subsequent misbehavior" (pg. 49).

While this is the only place in the book where the authors propose such blatantly inappropriate methods, I nevertheless cannot give a vote of confidence to anyone that would condone striking an animal with a wine bottle to elicit compliance. In addition, the authors make a great many generalizations about equine behavior and do not allow much leeway for differences in personality. As any person who spends much time around horses knows, one can be vastly different from the next. I said earlier that this book had two conceivable uses, but even for those I would not recommend purchasing this book. There are other books out there on the behavior and training of horses that are more current, more accurate, and more effective.

2 out of 5 stars Not For the Detail Oriented!.......2001-06-17

Touring In Wine Country: Tuscany provides a richly illustrated overview for anyone considering a tour of the towns and vineyards of Tuscany. It is disappointing, however, in its lack of detail. It would be easier to navigate your way by following the author's narrative than by attempting to read the maps, which are almost completely useless. There are recommendations for shopping and restaurants, but this information also is quite condensed, written in small pale type, and rather vague as to price range.

A far more useful book is A Traveller's Wine Guide To Italy, by Stephen Hobley.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful guide for Tuscan food & wine touring.......2000-08-21

This is a very helpful book. We have similar guides in the series for Burgundy, Alsace and Rhone. I highly recommend them. Our experience in Italy is that wine tourism per se is much less formal than France, Germany and US. That means the traveller must be a lot more curious and self sufficient. Bring along a fullscale Michelin road atlas and be prepared to ask a lot of questions. Try to learn an little Italian. It goes a long way. People were uniformly friendly and went way out of their way to draw local maps, add add'l restaurants to your list and even call wine makers for tours (on your behalf). Wine makers (such as Tenuta dell'Ornellaia) who otherwise don't open their doors to the public. Buy the book if you plan to tour wine regions in Tuscany!

3 out of 5 stars Wishing it had more information.......2000-07-19

Just returned from Tuscany and used the book extensively. Here's what I found. THE GOOD POINTS: The hotel and restaurant recommendations were excellent (although one particular hotel in which I stayed based on the book, which was called a "Haven" was just ok). Each city and chapter was broken down nicely with fine points and attractions that I used extensively. THE BAD POINTS: Although there were many, many wineries, and their phone numbers, and maps detailing the countryside in which they were located, the SPECIFICS were horrible. Never on any of the highlighted routes on the maps does it POINT OUT where these wineries are actually LOCATED, and on several occasions I was lost beyond belief trying to find them (even though I had made appointments). That made for a very frustrating wine tour, and considering this is a wine tour book, it needed to be more specific.

3 out of 5 stars overall a good resource but is lacking some important info.......2000-06-01

Over all I enjoyed this book but did have a few problems that I feel that people should be made aware of before deciding if they wish to purchase this book. The description of the wine roads does not include all of the wineries that she suggests visiting and includes some that are not in her book. The maps are utterly useless, with a black dot indicating that there is either a restaurant, winery or shop in that spot but doesn't indicate what it is. Many of these places indeed have fax numbers which I found on my own searches that she doesn't list. A better description of where each place is located and how to get there from a major landmark would be very helpful. Also some of the listings have letters such as E,F,G after the winery (one said "B" available in 2000) but I can not find anywhere in the book what these mean. I really did enjoy this book, the details of each winery is helpful as well as the restaurants but feel that you will need a companion book to go along with it.

We found the book in our rented hous in Toscany. We were located in the middle of the Chianti Classico area. We follewed one of the trips in the book and we saw one of the best castellos in the Chianti: Castello di Brolio. Absolutely fantastic.

        5 out of 5 stars Add a little glitz or a LOT.......2001-08-08

Mary Stori has staked out the world of beaded embellishment as her specialty and it is a good thing for the rest of us. Her enthusiasm for the form is palpable, her directions are clear and complete. The quilt designs sown in the book are more cute than elegant, but this reflects the type of small projects that one could finish in a workshop. The methods could easily be adapted to more sophisticated applications.   Mary shows each stitch in a close up picture and illustration and accompanies this with written instructions that are easy to follow. If you follow her suggestion and make a beaded sampler of each stitch, you will be well on your way to embellishing your first real project. Tip and tricks keep you from making the same mistakes she made while learning. Eight projects are given in detail.

5 out of 5 stars The Stori of Beaded Embellishment.......2001-08-06

I absolutely loved the book and am already starting to collect beads..."anything with a hole in it" ! It may be "non-traditional" but the information is priceless. As a person who has never added beads to anything I found the stitch instructions were well written and the illustrations are excellent, well worth the price of the book. As an added bonus, you can get some great ideas of how to use beads by studying some of Mary Stori's very whimisical and funny quilts. You will love the humor in all Mary's quilts and her techniques for using beads are fantastic.

            Book Description

This companion volume to the exhibition Made in California: Art, Image, and Identity,1900-2000 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art offers in-depth, illustrated essays on the making of California culture in the twentieth century. Written by a stellar cast of art historians and scholars in the humanities, the essays look closely at the forces that shaped fine art and material culture in California. The contributors weave their subjects around themes that are central to the milestone exhibition: the California landscape--both the natural and built environments--and the state's cultural and political relationships with Latin America and Asia.
These provocative essays cover topics such as counterculture architecture, Watts Towers, border culture, identity and gender issues, the role of schools in California art, auto tourism, Hollywood, music, Beat culture, politics, literature, photography, and much more. Accessibly written and intellectually engaging, these essays sharpen our understanding of California in the twentieth century and bring together many diverse, yet interrelated, aspects of its art and culture.

            Product Description

In 1926 Theodore "Tiger" Flowers became the first African American boxer to win the world middleweight title. The next year he was dead, the victim of surgery gone wrong. His funeral in Atlanta drew tens of thousands of mourners, black and white. Atlantans would not grieve again in comparable numbers until Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968.

Flowers, whose career was sandwiched between those of the better-known black boxers Jack Johnson and Joe Louis, was not America's first successful black athlete. He was, however, the first to generate widespread goodwill among whites, especially in the South, where he became known as "the whitest black man in the ring."

The Pussycat of Prizefighting is more than an account of Flowers's remarkable achievements--it is a penetrating analysis of the cultural and historical currents that defined the terms of Flowers's success as both a man and an athlete. As we discover the sources of Flowers's immense popularity, Andrew Kaye also helps us to understand more deeply the pressures and dilemmas facing African Americans in the public eye.

We read, for instance, how boxing reinforced fans' notions of masculinity and ethnic pride; how whites rationalized the physical superiority of a black sportsman; and how blacks debated the value of athletes as racial role models. Kaye shows how Flowers, mindful that the ring was a testing ground for much more than his punching ability, carefully negotiated the mass media and celebrity culture. He crafted an uncontroversial public persona that of a religious man who prayed before each match, was deferential to whites, and exuded an aura of middleclass respectability.

Through the prism of prizefighting, this book reveals the personal cost African Americans faced as they attempted to earn black respect while escaping white hostility. Andrew Kaye gives us much to ponder regarding our own hopes and prejudices--and how we often burden our athletes and celebrities with them.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HISTORY AT ITS BEST.......2004-07-12

As its title suggests, Andrew Kaye's book is not only about Tiger Flowers; it's about the history and politics of black celebrity. Kaye has delivered a wide-ranging, sensitive & intelligently written piece of work that goes way, way beyond the usual cliches of sporting histories. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars not to be confused with a biography.......2004-07-10

If you are hungry for information on "Tiger" Flowers only be
prepared for a snack. The actual information concerning Mr. Flowers if put back to back probably covers 15 pages.

            5 out of 5 stars A good pussycat.......2004-07-05

Professor Kaye's book is about the dilemmas experienced by black athletes,
not an exhaustive account of every punch landed by Tiger Flowers and his
contemporaries. As a study of race relations in the 1920s and black life in
Atlanta, it seems to me that it succeeds admirably. The book is clearly
written and the illustrations are revealing.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a biography of Tiger Flowers.......2004-07-01

I found this book interesting not only for its overview of the life and career of Tiger Flowers but for the broader look at how athletes, especially black athletes, had to cope with the pressure of the public eye in the South in the early 20th century.

            1 out of 5 stars Poor Tiger.......2004-07-01

I have always been a fan of Tiger Flowers. I was intrigued by stories of him as a child. I must say as a social history and/or biography of Flowers this book is a complete flop. I was lucky enough to purchase a rare copy of Flowers biography published in 1928 by Edney and Flowers' widow. The book leaves much to be desired, a contention which Mr. Kaye agrees with. Interestingly, despite this fact Mr. Kaye seems to use the Edney book as his major source for Flowers life. It would have been nice to have had a hometown heros life done in a more concise fashion. Sadly, Flowers legacy seems as neglected today, after the publication of this book, as it was before hand. Poor Tiger.
