This chilling novel--the psychological history of Dr. Rafael Neruda, an analyst who suffered inconceivable abuse as a child, and one of his patients, Gene Kenny, who committed suicide--is presented as a manuscript "sealed at the request of the author, Dr. Rafael Guillermo Neruda, M.D., until fifty years after his death." Dr. Neruda's writings tell of his retribution against "evil" which, according to Neruda, appeared in the form of two characters who plagued his patient. There is Kenny's boss, who fired him, and Kenny's daughter, a narcissistic nymphomaniac who seduced him. Misusing his power as a doctor, Neruda convinces the boss to re-enact his childhood trauma with his father, and the daughter to recreate her imagined childhood incest. In his effort to eradicate the roots of abuse, the doctor reveals himself to be the most vicious character of all.

1 out of 5 stars Dr. Neruda's Cure for Crap?.......2004-08-27

Yglesias' "Dr. N." ranks among the greatest mediocrities in recent literature, and Dr. N. among literature's most annoying protagonists. It is utterly mystifying to me that this book has garnered any praise at all, let alone such fulsome praise (check out the other reviews on this page). By way of partial corrective to the trend I offer a few impressions.

Future readers of Dr. N., beware! Not that you really need be... Within the first few chapters of the book, its many many flaws are pretty much laid bare: lousy writing, stilted dialogue, pretentious tone (of which I, myself, will doubtless be accused by Yglesias fans). As we watch him grow, a tiny overwrought pre-Dr. Neruda thinks things (and regrettably all too often utters them) that no young child -- even a preternaturally sensitive (and self-consciously ingenius) child -- would ever think or say.

I have no idea whether Yglesias has any background in psychology. Perhaps he took some Psych courses in college. Perhaps he's read widely in the field. Perhaps he was even a professional psychologist or psychiatrist before taking up the pen. Whatever the case, Yglesias' presumed deep insights into the human psyche are (to paraphrase a thought of his protagonist [I forget which page and in what context]), to put it generously, banal and not a little pompous.

The discerning reader will doubtless toss this novel after the first few chapters. Neither a compelling meditation on evil (let alone approaches to its cure) nor even a marginally entertaining story, this one is best reshelved and forgotten. The book was given to me as a gift, so I felt obliged to finish it.

Having slogged my way to "Dr. N."'s patently stupid conclusion, I don't know which I find more despairing: the fact that a piece of drivel like this was ever published (considering how many genuinely deserving writers out there can't get a break), or that so many reviewers on this page ate it up? Cry the American novel...

5 out of 5 stars amazing wonderful.......2004-02-16

this is one of the best books i have ever read in my entire life. the book draws the reader in immediately and holds the reader's attention for all 600 plus pages. i finished it a couple days ago and cannot stop thinking about it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, incredible, incredible - but not for everyone........2004-01-31

I'm a voracious reader, as well as a literary snob (I admit it) with high expectations, and I must say this is one of the best 5 works of fiction I've read in my life. Words like "vast," "sweeping," and "epic" come to mind. Also "brilliant," "amazing," and "genius." It's enormously entertaining and impossible to put down. It's 700 pages and I'm still dying for more when it's done. I'm left with that wistful feeling you sometimes get when a book is finished and you have to face the fact that the main character isn't a real person.

However, I have a background in psychology, and I've noticed that non-psych-types tend to find this book pretentious, pedantic, or silly. If you don't have an interest in or feel for psychology, you may not enjoy it. It might be difficult for a reader to understand the book without a good familiarity with psychology, given how full the book is of jargon and psych concepts. In this sense the book may be alienating to many readers. In my opinion, the author doesn't make much of an effort to make the content accesible to people who don't have a good understanding of concepts like projection, transference, sublimation, or the id.

However, if you're familiar with, or just interested in, psychology, this book is exquisitely pleasurable. The fact that it reads as a book written by a psychologist for psychologists makes it even more delicious. You don't have to trudge through tiring explanations; he assumes you understand everything, and doesn't hesitate to leap right into the complicated stuff. You may even find that, like me, your own beliefs and theories are challenged and expanded by Yglesias.

This book reminds me quite a bit of The Name of the Rose, another of my top 5 all-time greatest. Remember Eco's long passages in Latin and abundant references to medieval obscurities? Both Eco and Yglesias assume you're up to speed on the subject matter, and they don't bother trying to walk you through it. If you're an aspiring polymath, an intellectual binge eater, or just someone who loves a challenge, I think you'll adore both of these books. (If you didn't major in psych or medieval history, you'll feel like you deserve 16 credit hours in each just for reading them.)

(Another author who writes like this is Pynchon - not the same friendly style and engrossing plot, but the same kind of thick erudition you feel like you need an encyclopedia just to get through.)

3 out of 5 stars Thought provoking but ultimately shallow.......2002-04-17

The first and second divisions of the book are incredibly well written. The dialogue, settings and explanations of the genuinely awful things that occur to the main character and his patient are enthralling. The reason I can't rate this novel higher is that the final third of the book, while interesting, does not capture me as being in sync with the rest of the novel. We are supposed to believe that Dr. Neruda, a man who spent most of his life up until that point helping children who suffered tortures, would behave in a basically evil way to 'cure' two socially unredeemable characters. I can't buy it and frankly, I don't think the author was very good at describing his concept of evil.

According to this author, the likes of Hitler and Stalin weren't evil, but the two businesspeople Neruda hunts after in a chilling manner are. Strange, but true. Granted, these characters are incredibly dislikeable, and Halley in particular is the least engaging character in the book. Perhaps Yglesias' failure to make these two characters intriguing is what emotionally distanced me from the finale of the novel. I was left thinking, is the author trying to show that evil is as evil does, that there is a certain banality and randomness to true evil? If so, aren't those obvious points already?

The characters that are built up and introduced in parts 1 and 2 of the novel were fantastic and quite real. What Yglesias does to some of them in part 3 is deeply boring.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Neruda's Cure for Evil.......2001-03-17

I've read over 5,000 books in my life, and Dr. Neruda's Cure for Evil is by far the best that I have EVER read. The only unfortunate thing about coming across Rafael Yglesias and his brilliant work is that all of his other works seem to be out of print, and I can't get more of him.

    Book Description

With The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien in-vented modern fantasy. In honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth, a group of his literary descendants each contributed an original story to this anthology. Included are works by Stephen R. Donaldson, bestselling author of The One Tree; Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn; and Patricia S. McKillip, author of the Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy. Here also are tales from bestsellers Terry Pratchett, Andre Norton, and Dennis L. McKiernan; award-winners Robert Silverberg, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, Mike Resnick, Gregory Benford, John Brunner, Poul Karen Ander-son, and Barry N. Malzberg; masters such as Charles de Lint, Jane Yolen, Karen Haber, and Harry Turtledove; and two of modern fantasy's most acclaimed stars: Judith Tarr, author of The Dagger and the Cross, and Emma Bull, author of War for the Oaks.

1 out of 5 stars Tricked, oh so tricked!.......2006-11-27

Good stories, but if you expect anything that has any continuity with the Ring Mythos, look elsewhere. You will be very disappointed.

What next, "tales of the old south- a tribute to tolkien"? Or how about "a history of jet planes- stories in honor of tolkien"?

The stories, as a collection, deserve 4 stars, but this book's title and dust jacket (hardcover ed.) is so misleading that ol' Greenberg gets only one.

5 out of 5 stars Stories In Honor of Tolkien.......2006-01-29

This was an excellent book. The variety of the stories and their settings and themes was refreshing. After reading many classic fairy tales, fantasy and science fiction stories, it was nice to read something new. Some draw you into the past, some are set in the present, while others take you to an unknown time. The characters are not your typical damsel in distress, but people (and creatures) that you can understand and maybe even relate to. One of my favorites is "The Conjure Man" by Charles de Lint. This story talks about a problem that is very close to my heart. I would recommend this book to anyone that has enjoyed fantasy, and especially Tolkien lovers.

1 out of 5 stars The Noise You Hear is Tolkien Spinning in his Grave.......2005-11-21

A much better title for this collection would have been "Just a Bunch of Stories We Never Got Around to Selling." I gave it one star on the general principle that dishonest advertising shouldn't be rewarded. These stories have nothing to do with Tolkien nor do any of them remind you of the Master. This is basically a random selection of fantasy short stories ranging from bad to average in quality.

4 out of 5 stars From the best to the worst.......2002-01-02

Like many collections of short stories, After the King is a mixed bag, but it contains a higher ratio of stories I liked than most do. Many of the best of the fantasy genre are here, including Pratchett, McKillip, Norton, de Lint, and Beagle. (And though this book is credited to Jane Yolen, she is mainly credited writes a introduction -- a good one. She also writes one of the below)

"Reave the Just" by Stephen R. Donaldson was one of my least favorites -- there's hardly any magic, and none of the characters really connect. We have a besotted youth, a spineless widow, a sadistic suitor, and Reave the Supremely Uninteresting. But fans of Terry Pratchett -- and of Cohen the Barbarian -- will enjoy the wry and funny "Troll Bridge." The SF story "Long Night's Vigil at the Temple" by Robert Silverberg is spellbindingly written and uncomfortably plotted, on the subject of religion and bringing up intelligent questions about the basis of some of them.

"The Dragon of Tollin" by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough is a fairly average dragon story. Poul and Karen Anderson's "Faith" is an intriguing story simply by virtue of featuring some goblin POV. I found "In the Season of the Dressing of the Wells" bu John Brunner boring, obnoxious and poorly characterized. "The Fellowship of the Dragon" by Patricia McKillip is perhaps the best of the entire volume, with the poetic language and intriguing plotline. Tolkien would be proud.

I found Harry Turtledove's "Decoy Duck" (what a horrible title) to be intriguing, though a little out of my grasp. Andre Norton's "Nine Threads of Gold" is haunting to the core. Charles de Lint's "Conjure Man" is equally haunting for different reasons, starting with a quote from Tolkien himself, and proceeding to a lesson about nature and life. The dedication is excellent.

Emma Bull's "Silver or Gold" is a delightful story in the tradition of old fairy tales and myths. Similarly Karen Haber's story "Up the Side of the Air" is cute without being cutesy, the tale of a wizard who gets a new assistant -- who happens to be a little girl. Peter S. Beagle pens the story "The Naga," which is rather densely written but also in the tradition of old fairy tales and myths. Some readers may like the quirky contemporary story "Revenge of the Sugar Plum Fairies" by Mike Resnick, but I thought it was weird and mildly irritating. ("Number one on our hit list is Walt Disney"?)

"Winter's King" by Jane Yolen is haunting and sad at the end, and much shorter than the surrounding stories. "Gotterdammerung" by Barry N. Malzberg was blah -- I didn't connect to anyone in it, and it was formatted and written somewhat oddly. "Down the River Road" by Gregory Benford is also fairly dull, stretched out over a charmless contemporary setting and divided into chapterettes. Judith Tarr redeems the ending with the haunting, poetically-ended "Death and the Lady."

And finally, for some inexplicable reason Dennis McKiernan wrote a story as well: "Halfling House," one of the worst SF/F short stories I've ever read. A small warning: it contains his ripoff hobbits the "warrows," as well as various other short species staying in a tiny, dimension-traveling inn -- and a few clumsy Tolkien homages that made me wince rather than smile. Not to mention the incoherent ending.

Before anyone buys this simply because it says that the stories are "in honor" of Tolkien, let me warn you: Most of these stories bear no resemblance to Tolkien's work -- whether for good or ill. Some are contemporary stories; some take place in the generic medieval settings, and some take place in specific medieval settings (complete with Viking names). Some are comedic, some tragic, some a combination of both -- several were introspective. Some of them are pure fantasy, no fantasy, mildly fantasy-like, or bordering on SF.

A mixed bag, as I said before, but with several excellent stories. Even if you are not a fan of the authors, you may want to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Carry it everywhere.......2001-07-26

As other reviewers have said, these stories are not Tolkein-esque. They are, however, a fine example of Tolkien's LEGACY. DeLint and Bull write stories with a subtly of prose which gives me shivers. I have read these storiezs aloud to friends over the phone. If you are a fan of fantasy, then read this collection. It is the book I take when I don't want to pack a lot of books but still want a diverse read on trips. Thank you, Tolkein (and MAcDonald) for making modern fantasy possible.

                2 out of 5 stars Not a book I want to keep........2007-08-30

Reviewer's review above pretty much sums up just about everything I would say about it. They are indeed healthy (it's only plus), but it's the book itself that I have a problem with. When I read the title, I thought a week was a week. It's not though, a week to Albert is only Monday through Friday; to me that's only part of the week. It's only planning meals for five days and quite frankly, I can do that kind of planning in about five minutes so I don't see why this book would be helpful to anyone, except for the healthy recipes for the health nuts out there.

This book isn't one that I would recommend to anyone, except for the reason mentioned already. Thankfully I checked it out from the library and never made it as a purchase. It's going back today without me ever looking at it again.

I would recommend "The Everything Meals for a Month Cookbook," by Linda Larsen instead. Though be warned, the meals aren't as healthy as this book is. However it's better planning (worth the purchase for that alone), has better tips and so forth.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing recipes in this book!.......2007-05-20

I was looking forward to some fun, new recipes from this book. The author owns a "make and take" store, and this is her cookbook. Not only did I find the recipes odd sometimes, but really not very "family friendly". I am really quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-01-22

I got this book for Christmas & it's already got that delightful "used cookbook" look. As a new mother, I was finding it difficult to find the time to cook each evening (or to even think about what to make), and I was heading to the grocery store several times a week. The shopping lists and work plans have simplified my life, and the recipes are really tasty, easy to prepare, & I feel like we're eating more healthfully and with greater variety than ever. And since we're making healthy foods for dinner, it's easy for me to feed our 9-month-old without much additional work (just cut up & share!).

I do find that I'm buying more meat than I used to, but also different kinds (pork & fish - not just ground beef or chicken breasts).

Since there are only about 5 dinners prepped per week, there's room to add in our old family standards, to go out, or to pick out a frozen "leftover" from one of the earlier weeks. I'm recommending this book to every one I know.

5 out of 5 stars interesting food made easy.......2007-01-08

I am a working mom married to a man who ate too much Americana growing up. Meaning -- I don't have much time to cook, but my husband really doesn't enjoy the typical cream of mushroom soup and hamburger fare that easy cookbooks typically contain. This book saved me! I just finished the first week's cooking. I have five dinners ready for the week, and my husband begged me not to freeze all of the chili so he could eat some for lunch. (And my two year old ate it, too, and loved it. So no worries, there.) If, like me, the thing you hate about cooking dinner is trying to figure out what to shop for each week and what to make each evening, this book is lovely.

As a Dad who cooks I found variety, nutrition and speed in the plans set out in this well written excellently communicated cookbook. Concepts which before were alien to me became crystal clear and I created my own weekly meal plans to go along with the series that are outlined in the book. The kids actually joined in on the making of some of the plans and true to her word (the author) they actually relished those meals more than the others. Most meals they tried and liked, some a lot and some so so but that's kids and that was miles ahead of where I was three months ago.

Lots of good information, well presented, easy to read. Somewhat outdated maybe, but the overall bottom line is the same and well presented. I will recommend this book to others, along with other books in the series by same author.

This book is sort of the "Dummies Guide" to raising llamas. It not only covers common sense but also in depth topics. Before we purchased our llamas we did a lot of research and this is a book that we chose to keep permanently in our library. We are purchasing it for our local public library as a gift to all that may be interested in lloving llamas.

As with all of their books, this one was extremely informative and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Llama Bible.......2005-06-20

We have gone through several copies of this book and require all our 13 and up 4-H kids to read it. Mostly, we use it as a reference manual and augment it with other sources of information from trade magazines and llama vet advice. This is a great book with some solid instructions on how to care for these wonderful animals.

I highly recommend this book to anyone considering llamas. It will provide you with a solid understanding of the needs of the species and the amount of work that will be required to tend to them. Like most things, it is always helpful to get information from more then one source.

1 out of 5 stars Not Suitable for Novices.......2004-12-15

I have had alpacas for over a year now and llamas for a couple of months so while I'm still a novice I do have some experience. I feel this book is not suitable for novices because once you start finding inconsistencies in a book, it's difficult to have faith in the book as a whole.

Fertilizer: "Their communal dung pile makes clean up easier than it is with other livestock". No comment about the fact that not ALL lamas are like that. My boys have several dung piles all over the place.

Buying your first llama: Gale talks about buying "just one llama". While she does mention that they "can generally" be kept with other livestock she doesn't mention that they really do better in the company of their own species.

Horse Trailers: "You can leave llamas in ventilated horse trailers for several days when you are transporting them on a long trip. It is essential to provide fresh feed and water twice a day. You won't need to remove llamas from the trailer to walk them. ... have no problem staying in a kushed position hour upon hour chewing their cud". YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! In the section on fertilizers she talks about how clean they are then she's telling you to leave them laying in their own sh*t! To NOT walk an animal who has been confined to a trailer is cruelty!

Number of animals to a space: "... 8 to 10 llamas in an 8' x 8' stall". Think about it for a minute that's less than 1 sq. ft per animal!

Fencing: One one page she says that 32" - 37.5" is too short then on the very next page she says that "a sheep containment height of 3 feet will be sufficient". 37.5" is too short but 36" is sufficient?

While well intended by a successful breeder, in my opinion, there are too many contradictions to make this book safe for novices.

This is an excellent source of information and I recommend it to anyone who is considering having a llama, and even to the veteran llama owner. This book covers extensive information on care of llamas that is not generally compiled in other places. As a llama breeder, we strongly recommmed this book to all our buyers and suggest that potential new owners read it BEFORE they make a final decision to own llamas. It contains great information in an easy to read format. For new owners, it provides tremendous insight on what to plan for with pasture, fencing, care, behaviors, etc. Note that this book covers many high-level veterinary care points, but is not intended to provide in-depth medical information.

I checked this book out from the library and found it so helpful and interesting that I'll be buying it to have on hand. I don't have llamas yet, but would like to in the future. In the mean time, I'm trying to read and learn as much about it as I can. This book was great for me as a beginner, but complete enough to expand upon if you've had llamas for a while. It covers all the basics of care and breeding as well as a great section on creating a business with your llamas like packing, showing, fertilizer, etc. Gale Birutta is a great author that presents everything in a clear and interesting manner. I loved this book and I recommend it to anyone interested in llamas.

This gives you an overview of everything you need to know about raising llamas. For breeders who sell llamas, the book is a great gift to go along with the animal they sell. It saves them time as it answers many of the questions the new owners have. A must for people thinking about buying their first llama It tells them what to look for so they can make a wise purchase..

4 out of 5 stars A comprhensive book on all aspects of llamas........1998-04-30

This is one of the few books that addresses how to show, sell, care for and train llamas. It covers more areas of llama ownership than any other book I have read. If you want a llama for a pet, or for more than that, this is a good read.

The text is written especially for serious Colt collectors and gun enthusiasts, and a handful of black-and-white photographs and diagrams round out this quality, in-depth collector's and researcher's guide.

                    1 out of 5 stars Lousy Book.......2004-02-17

I bought this, looking for something about Colt Single Action Revolvers. This book covers mostly copies of Colts, info on quickdraw, Bisleys, Rugers, etc. Much of the book repeats the same info in each chapter. Save your money and get something else. I rated it one star because there was nothing lower. There is a list of Colt SAA serial numbers which was the best part of the book. I wouldn't ever buy a Doc O'Meara book again.

                    2 out of 5 stars Everything but . . ........2001-12-12

An exceedingly strange production: it is really not about Colt's Single Action Army Revolver, but instead associated but irrelevant phenomenon, i.e., Italian clones (who cares?), Rugers (who cares?), forgotten celebrities who were once photographed carrying Colts (who really cares?) It's all there except for, er, you know, the SUBJECT OF THE BOOK, on which, alas, there's very little. It's as if the compositor lost a set of six or eight chapters somewhere and the publishers hoped nobody would notice. When I finished paging through it, I thought, Yes, but where's the stuff on the famed sixgun?

1 out of 5 stars A Bit Thin for the Price........2000-12-29

Colt Single Action Army revolver... repeats some useful information regarding the evolution of the arm and also provides some useful information regarding dating by serial number. The book would be moderately interesting if the above data were not already widely available from such authorities as Robert Wilson and legions of collectors of the Colt variations.

This volume will probably be seconded to the bargain section of your neighborhood bookstore in short order. A substantial reduction in price would be worth the wait.

2 out of 5 stars Not a book on Colt SAAs.......2000-09-27

This was one of,if not the worst, book on Colt SAAs I have ever bought. It appears as a compilation of articles from monthly publications. It has very little info on older, original SAAs. There is lots of stuff on shooting modern replicas and there is not much depth there either. I was very disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Valuable, enthusiasts' book: needed an editor and designer.......2000-04-16

A slim (160-page) coffee table book that will please, but...... O'Meara's setting of the Colt SAA in its historical background is clear, simplified and useful for anyone who has difficulty quite fathoming the sometimes intricate development of and differences between the various Colt pistols -- from the Patterson, Pocket, Walker, Dragoon, Navy, and Army models up to the SAA. The rest of the book covers a broad range of SAA topics -- replicas, rivals, fine-tuning, conversions and variants, cartridges, engraving, cowboy shooting, etc -- all in somewhat simple style and language. I get the impression no new ground is broken with this book. I imagine it is tough to publish such a limited-audience book and have it emerge just as one would wish it to be, however a professional editor (i.e. someone other than the author) could have done much to improve the readability and attractiveness of it. The pokey little b&w photos that litter the text are better than nothing but don't convey the power of thse guns or their historic significance. Any firearms catalogue offers better. And the color photos, which are bigger and better than the b&ws are too amateurish (or badly printed by today's standards) to enthuse any but the already enthused. I don't want to be negative as this book is obviously a labor of love by O'Meara. But I was disappointed that more had not been made of the opportunity to show off this key part of (monument to?) grass roots American history. ( ). That's a bit steep for a book with these limitations IMHO.

                                        Book Description

A beautiful volume that sheds light on a less well-known part of Warhol's oeuvre, Andy Warhol: Headshots shows the artist turning his artistry and intelligence towards portrait-making. Like much of Warhol's best work, these snapshots play against a world of images and signatures where the authentic version of an individual is seemingly nonexistent.

                                        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating collection of portraits.......2001-07-15

"Andy Warhol Headshots" brings together a large number of portraits that exemplify the style of this legendary artist. The book includes an interesting introductory essay by Bob Colacello, who notes that Warhol "approached the portraits like he did everything else--with diligence, creativity, and a fair amount of greed." Among the interesting tidbits shared by Colacello is the story of Warhol's unsuccessful attempt to woo Imelda Marcos into commissioning multiple portraits.

The portraits include both paintings (polymer paint and silkscreen ink on canvas) and drawings. The book features alternative versions of some portraits; this feature helps to illuminate Warhol's technique. The portraits are at times whimsical, at times playful, at times a touch sinister, and at times quite elegant. Overall, an essential volume for those interested in Warhol's multifaceted legacy.

Herb Boyd is one of the most accomplished African American journalists on the scene--and also a gifted anthologist, as evidenced by his award-winning collection Brotherman: The Odyssey of Black Men in America. His new reader, Autobiography of a People, is a potpourri of Afro-American voices spanning three centuries--a soulful choir singing of joy, sorrow, freedom, and victory. "The story of African people is a glorious one," Boyd writes, "replete with a pantheon of mighty voices and courageous souls who in their combined strength have overcome inestimable odds and carved a special niche in the gallery of world culture." From the 18th century, we read the slave narratives of Olaudah Equiano, the pristine poetry of Phillis Wheatley, and scientific writings of astronomer Benjamin Banneker. The power of Frederick Douglass, Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth called forth the fires of freedom one century later. And, as the book heads into the 20th century, we revisit the wisdom of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois, the homeland strivings of Marcus Garvey, and modern life-and-death lessons bequeathed to us by Mumia Abu-Jamal. From Marian Anderson to Malcolm X, Boyd highlights the diversity and dynamism of African American people and the benefits of all who are touched by their stories. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Du Bois on the Talented Tenth * Matthew Henson on reaching the North Pole * and many more.

"It has been said, 'He who does not know history is doomed to repeat it.' We as African Americans must put forth a concerted effort to know and to write our own history...We have the knowledge, the know-how, the resources, and we were there."
                                        --Rev. Bernice A. King

Celebrating the spirituality, courage, and intellectual achievements of African Americans, Autobiography of a People is the first anthology to effectively trace the history of the African American experience--from the Middle Passage to Emancipation, from the Civil War to Vietnam, from the Little Rock Nine to the Million Man March--by telling the story in the words of the men and women who lived it.

Editor Herb Boyd has combined a powerful chorus of voices from the past and present to create a compelling portrait of how African Americans have survived--and shaped--some of the most important events in United States history. The misery of slavery, the bloodshed of war, and the struggle for civil rights are just some of the pivotal experiences described in vivid detail throughout the book. Many of the most revered historical and intellectual figures, writers, religious leaders, and activists appear within these pages, such as Phillis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Elaine Brown, Margaret Walker, and General Colin Powell. Yet this remarkable collection also includes riveting scenes from the lives of ordinary men and women whose accomplishments may not have been recorded in the history books, but whose experiences are equally important to the African American story.

Offering a wealth of historical detail and emotion, Autobiography of a People is a stunning accomplishment that brings African American history to life, in all its tragedy and triumph, in a brilliant testament to the black experience in America.

The book boasts an astounding roster of important historical and intellectual figures, writers and religious leaders, such as Phyllis Wheatley, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., General Colin Powell, and Angela Davis, as well as a generous selection of riveting accounts from ordinary people. The misery of slavery, the bloodshed of several American wars, and the struggle for civil rights are just some of the pivotal experiences described in vivid detail throughout the book. Linked by editor Herb Boyd's informative narrative bridges, these powerful voices from the past and present combine to create a compelling portrait of how African Americans have survived-- and shaped--some of the most important events in U.S. history.

A monumental achievement, AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A PEOPLE brings African-American history to life in all its tragedy and triumph, in a brilliant testament to the black experience in America. -->

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer in Black Thought in America.......2000-04-03

Do you ever wonder how black people living as slaves described life in America? Herb Boyd, author and journalist, has been a professor of black studies for thirty years. Thus, he is uniquely qualified to distill from the reams of black thought that which might best stand as a fitting testament to African Americana. Editor Boyd has deftly woven the dark backstory to the glamorized myth on which the American Dream rests. The author establishes that blacks in America have never been that content underclass by and large depicted in this country's history books. He disputes the notion, central to American history, that Africans brought to America were docile, uncivilized, unintelligent and, thus, deserving of their lot. Culling from the words of those who did dare to speak out (often with disastrous consequences), Boyd has woven an eloquent, emotional tapestry of the black experience. Its power derives not from any self-conscious rage, but from the simplicity, the unguarded frankness of the voices. This is a timely book, sorely needed at a critical moment in this nation's history.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A COLLECTION OF REALITIES.......2000-02-19

Twice I attempted to write this review of Herb Boyd's AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A PEOPLE, with it's" three centuries of African American history told by those who lived it"

but soon realized I should finish reading it first. His collections (of excerpt) is so powerful so revealing; and each one seem to flow into the next. like a chronological change of events.

I can see how it may be differcult for some to believe (and easier to deny) the suffering and sacrificing our ancestors endured, to make possible the freedom and well being we now enjoy. Surely it'll instill pride in we Americans of African descent and Americans of goodwill..

Myself, more so being the fact that I too, made a contribution. An excerpt was selected from my Korean war memoir, WHAT'S A COMMIE EVER DONE TO PEOPLE? (Publishes by McFarland Publishers Inc.). Sure, at the time, I was politically ignorant to the reasons I was there fighting, like many others black soldiers, then we were fighting for our lives, the fight for our freedom, we who survived, was to come on our return t o America.

Hopefully, my story, alone with the many others that appears in AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A PEOPLE will help enlighten other 17 & 18 year old American-American to the reality, that the freedom we now enjoy, others fought and died for it.

PS; In "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A PEOPLE" includes my favorite hero, the adventurous, explorer, scientist and author, Mr. Matthew Henson, who's life story inspired me to be an adventurer.. DARK COMPANION. It was the first book I read. I was nine years old.

Again, My Sincere Thanks to you Brother; Herb Boyd your book is a magnificent collection of excerpts. And no doubt it'll serve as an inspiration to many.

                                        Conversations with Herb Boyd

While I attended New York University in the late 80's, I majored in 18th Century Literature and minored in African American history. Hands down, my biggest challenge was being able to keep up with my reading, and retain all that was required of me by my professors. If only Autobiography of a People Three Centuries of African American History Told By Those Who Lived It, Herb Boyd's newest book had existed years ago when I was a student in college.

As I am still a student of African American history, Boyd's book is right on time. Booksellers and African American history buffs who live in Manhattan received a royal treat on Saturday, February 5, 2000 if they tuned in to "Books That Matter" with Leroy Baylor and listened to Boyd talk about his newest success. "Books That Matter," a public access program promotes reading and literacy to a diverse readership and interviews new and well-established authors. Recent guests include: Tavis Smiley, Sapphire, Johnnie Cochran, and William Loren Katz. The show airs on alternate Saturdays in Manhattan on Channel 34 at 10:30 p.m., in Brooklyn on Channels 34 &67 at 10 p.m. every Friday evening and each Monday evening on Bronx Net at 10:30 p.m.

I found Baylor's interview with Boyd enjoyable, and several times I felt like I as a student again learning about the great history of my people. The wonderful rapport between Baylor and Boyd was immediate and a treat for the viewer. The book, which is a compendium of 118 powerful African American voices is quickly being heralded as a New Classic in African American Literature --a compliment it rightly deserves.

This book is an anthology edited by Herb Boyd.It contains compelling material that is written by various authors who tell of the African American experience as they witnessed it.The book should be read by all those who would like to know what has occurred in the collective experience of the only Americans who were brought to this country against their will and treated as chattel. It may surprise many to learn that the African American community is not monolithic. The various voices selected by Mr.Boyd attest to this notion in the telling of the story.Again, this book is one that should be read by everyone who needs or wants to know of the tragedies and triumphs of a proud and glorious people and their multiple experiences in America.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Documentary.......2000-01-28

Herb Boyd is well known to readers in New York for his hard-hitting, easy and informative journalistic style. He also deserves to become well-known for his award-winning book on the African American experience, "Brotherman -- The Odessy of Black Men in American," co-edited with Robert Allen. It displays a keen knowledge of African American documentation concerning the role of Black men in our society. His "Down the Glory Road" shows a fine sense of the sweep and force of the African American experience and how it can be rendered in easy-to-grasp prose. Now Boyd has given us the carefully researched and stirring documentary, "Autobiography of People: Three Centuries of African-American History Told by Those who Live it." This is no mere celebration of achievements nor is it a tale of woes and pain. What Boyd has meticulously constructed by ferreting documents famous and unknown from the dusty files of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and elsewhere is a powerful narrative of Black America told by those women and men who walked the miles, scaled the mountains, fought the battles, suffered the losses and achieved the victories. Here are Africans telling what it meant to be wrenched from peaceful villages and stuffed into suffocating slave ships for the terrifying and deadly voyage across the Atlantic, and then living to fight for their liberty and to tell their tales. Here is the lone African American, Osborne Perry Anderson, who survived the famous John Brown raid in 1859 on Harper's Ferry, and disclosing as no history books used in our schools does how the enslaved population rose up to fight and help Brown and his gallant band, which included four other free men of color. Here is the Harlem Renaissance told in the words of its legendary participants: Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston and others. Here is the civil rights movement captured in its intensity, pain and triumph by Paul Robeson, Rosa Parks, Ella Baker and James Forman. Herb Boyd has given us an America our schools need to study and learn from.
