Book Description
In the tradition of T. C. Boyle,
Steven Millhauser, and Michel Faber -- with a penchant for
the macabre worthy of Irvine Welsh -- comes
Eating Mammals.
Gypsies, businessmen, servants, masters, and unwise children come together in three mythical tales from Victorian England.
Eating Mammals evokes a lost time and place in which the realm of the magical seems almost too possible: a winged cat wreaks havoc in a Yorkshire workhouse and then in the minds of a succession of owners; a famed stunt eater introduces his apprentice, Captain Gusto, to the delicate art of devouring anything for a living; a blooming romance between two meat-pie makers leads thirty-two adorned donkeys to the altar. Wholly original and as assured as folklore,
Eating Mammals marks the arrival of a very distinctive new voice.

It was hilarious--but also sort of gross........2007-07-10
I bought the book just a few days ago and managed to read it in its entirety in just two days. The writing is excellent--quick-witted and even a little bit tongue-in-cheek at times--and the stories themselves are great. Yes, at times they are quite gross, but, really, the humor outweighs it by a landslide. This book is definitely worth a read.
EEeeewww! (and I mean that in a good way).......2006-06-13
The three novellas of this book's title are: the title story 'Eating Mammals' which is about a professional eater called Captain Gusto, (kind of like Kobayashi Takeru only he'll literally eat anything), 'The Possession of Thomas-Bessie: a Victorian Melodrama' about a strange cat, born with a pair of small wings (don't worry, it's not in the least cutesy or cat-fancieresque), and finally 'The Donkey Wedding at Gomersal, recounted by an inhabitant of that place' about a rather odd wedding (I'll let you guess what exactly was odd about it).
They're all good solid stories, engagingly written, but the title story takes the cake, so to speak. I don't want to spoil it, but one of the last scenes is so perfectly, viscerally, stomach-churningly written that I literally felt sick reading it. Anyone can write a gross-out scene, but this is different, it was kind of a gross-out elevated to the level of art.
I recommend this book to all comers (provided they have a strong stomach) and I invite you to check out the author's first full-length novel 'Intoxicated', which I'm eagerly looking forward to reading.
Read it!.......2005-02-09
Come on! This is a great, great read. Witty and stylish writing, but warm hearted. read it, y'all! It reminded me of Edgar Allen Poe, but funny and pacier. Cool.
Not touching, just disgusting.......2004-12-18
While another reviewer found this book to be both "touching" and "disgusting", I found it to be simply disgusting.
I was entranced by the back cover of the book; the synopsis it presented was enticing. However, though tales of winged cats and men who can consume all things sound innocuous enough, the actual tales are revolting. Be prepared for tales of eating rotten dog and gruesome descriptions of animal cruelty.
I was so repulsed I couldn't finish the book.
True work of imagination.......2004-12-03
I have only read the first novella in the collection, the one for which the volume is named. As there are no other reviews on this item, I figured what the heck.
I picked up this book because it looked totally different from other things I've seen. And it is. I was amazed, flabbergasted, disgusted, and touched. So all in all, you should pick it up and check it out.
Customer Reviews:
Decent story. Glad the trilogy is over........2006-02-01
I must say that I've enjoyed the first four MTG books. Clayton Emery has done an admirable job of bringing the magic of Dominia to the pages of novels, as well as creating a nice story with engaging characters and a pretty exciting plot. However, I am glad that this story has come to an end and more of the world of MTG can now be explored.
In Final Sacrifice, Gull and Greensleeves continue to barely survive fight after fight against a team of wizards that they have thwarted in the past until Greensleeves eventually just snaps and nearly destroys everything around her. The ending of the book comes as somewhat of a surprise, with characters from the past reappearing and the "final sacrifice" not being what you'd expect.
Another quick, easy, and enjoyable read, I'd reccomend it for someone looking for a short and relaxing read.
At the least the trilogy is over.......2000-10-14
The book brought to conclusion the stories found in the two previous books. I have to admit, it was tough to read it. Boring at times, character flaws. I gave 3 stars becuase the last chapters made up for it. I must confess that I really felt bad for Greensleves. This proves that after three books, those characters, mostly Greenselves and Gull, really grew on me.
I have not used this one with my students.
Finally what I wanted!.......2000-05-26
I was looking a long time for some great fantasy book whith the good, beautiful yet extremely powerful sorceress in the main role. This trilogy and especially 'The Final Sacrifice' fulfilled all my demands at 100%. I can only mourn there isn't more books like this.
i loved it.......1999-12-01
it is an awesome book i loved the part where greenseleves cast the gaint storm on the blue barbarians whil protecting her own troops
Greensleeves must make the Final Sacrifice!.......1999-03-16
Greensleeves grows in power and battles the evil wizards who cast gloom upon the land. I loved this book! More wonderful descriptions.

A fantastic collection of the artists work compiled into a retelling of the pentateuch (the first five books of The Bible). Lushly illistrated in Woodroffe's unique style. Don't let the biblical angle throw you; fundamentalists may not enjoy this (anymore than they might enjoy, say, Last Temptation (Scorsese)).
Book Description
A delectable journey into the world of chocolate--from manufacturing to marketing, French boutiques to American multinationals--by the award-winning author of Olives.
Science, over recent years, has confirmed what chocolate lovers have always known: the stuff is actually good for you. It's the Valentine's Day drug of choice, has more antioxidants than red wine, and triggers the same brain responses as falling in love. Nothing, in the end, can stand up to chocolate as a basic fundament to human life.
In this scintillating narrative, acclaimed foodie Mort Rosenblum delves into the complex world of chocolate. From the mole poblano--chile-laced chicken with chocolate--of ancient Mexico to the contemporary French chocolatiers who produce the palets d'or--bite-sized, gold-flecked bricks of dark chocolate--to the vast empires of Hershey, Godiva, and Valrhona, Rosenblum follows the chocolate trail the world over. He visits cacao plantations, meets with growers, buyers, makers, and tasters, and investigates the dark side of the chocolate trade as well as the enduring appeal of its product.
Engaging, entertaining, and revealing, Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light is a fascinating foray into this "food of the gods."
Customer Reviews:
Not Interesting as a Book.......2007-04-05
This book would do well to advertise itself as a series of articles about topics and people related to chocolate and chocolate production, but marketed as the story of chocolate it's needlessly boring. The chapters are about the length of an article and don't seem to be interconnected except in subject matter. The first few chapters were very interesting, but around the chapter "The Chocolate Coast" I realized that these were the longest 140-some pages of my life. I would be more interested in the history and lore of chocolate, rather than chapter after chapter of how he followed someone around, was almost denied access to their secrets/factory, and then talking about the different fermentation processes and what the machines look like. He may fare better to talk about wines, because that's how the subject is treated and somehow it just doesn't fit. He becomes haughty about the inferiority of american chocolate, treating his audience as a oenophile would speak to someone who drinks wine coolers. As for the writing, it seems to steer wrecklessly between very dry and excessively nostalgic.
This book would be a winner with people interested chocolate economics, how different people use difference processes, and how chocolate is used in foods around the world. Unfortunately I wasn't looking for any of these things.
loved this book.......2007-02-26
This book was great to find out the background/history of chocolate and the inside to different "brand" names around the world. Though he skims over some "brands" and doesn't go into much detail on some, I still found it a good read.
Will appeal both to cooks and to chocolate fans who just like reading about it........2007-02-06
The uses and innovations of chocolate in foods from around the world at last receives embellishment in Mort Rosenblum's "Chocolate: A Bittersweet Saga of Dark and Light", a lively survey blending a travelogue with culinary history and industry insights. From chocolate's health promises to its various renditions, the pages pack in plenty of mouth-watering detail and will appeal both to cooks and to chocolate fans who just like reading about it.

Interesting view of the Chocolate Biz.......2006-06-27
Rosenblum's book is a fun read and you'll learn a ton about the choco biz, but the tasting notes are lost inside all the gossip.
I prefer The Chocolate Connoisseur for more focused detail on just chocolate and learning how to distinguish between various grades. This is more of an industry approach and extensive and interesting as are Rosenblum's other food books.
Deliciously Interesting.......2006-02-16
This was a delightful way to learn about the history of chocolate. Well written, clear and concise. I learned alot from this book and it spurred me on to try some new ways of preparing chocolate dishes. I found it very useful in sharing history with I shared chocolate dishes with. It definately gives you a topic of conversation at almost any meal.

Good General Book, Cookie Cutter Poodle Book.......2007-01-02
This book is a good general guide. If you are getting a poodle for the first time and do not have experience training dogs this book would be a good general guide with a few poodle specific facts (if you have not already bought a general guide). I was very disappointed in it as a "poodle book". There are a few paragraphs scattered throughout its pages, which were written (and well) by a poodle person. However, the rest of the book seems to have to the word "poodle" inserted where the word "dog" would be in any general guide. It is a cookie cutter attempt at a poodle book. Most of the poodle information is very basic anyhow, and I (as I hope any true poodle person would be) was turned off at the advocation of poodle mixes. There is not enough information guiding someone to rescue an older or mix poodle as opposed to buying a designer mix poo. Most poodle people are strictly against this. Also, there are not a lot of pictures, and the ones there are aren't very colorful or informative.
THE EVERYTHING POODLE BOOK;A COMPLETE GUIDE TO RAISING,TRAINING,AND CARING FOR YOUR POODLE.......2006-07-15
I NEEDED THE INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK WHEN I BOUGHT A POODLE PUP AND GOT IT HOME TO FIND OUT IT WAS ONLY 7 WEEKS OLD AND HAD ONLY THE 4 FANGS NO OTHER TEETH. IT WILL CONTINUE TO HELP ME RAISING THIS WONDERFUL, SMART, SWEET POODLE.
Best book by far about poodles.......2005-05-19
Lots of information that I had never read anywhere else, and I've read a lot of dog books. It is obvious the author loves dogs. My only complaint is just not enough pictures. But great, great book.
Lives up to its title.......2004-08-19
Janine Adams has written the definitive guide to living with and loving poodles. Her lively, well-written text answers every conceivable question that a person who lives with a poodle -- or would like to live with one -- could possibly ask. Without question, this book is a five-star opus.

Book Description
Conventionally, the philistine is assumed to have no value for art and culture. But in this fascinating re-evaluation of its excluded identity, Dave Beech and John Roberts address the philistine not as an empirical phenomenon but as a relational category that operates between art and anti-art, aesthetics and anti-aesthetics, arguing that the philistine cuts to the very core of the predicament of art in a divided culture. In this they develop what they call a 'counter-intuitive' notion of the philistine, claiming that what the philistine tells us about cultural division and exclusion is more persuasive than the theories of the popular and the 'otherly-cultured' in cultural studies and postmodernism. The 'counter-intuitive' philistine, they contest, returns the cultural debate to the problems of the persistence of power, privilege and symbolic violence. Asserting that the relations between power and art have been undertheorized in recent studies, Beech and Roberts find their critical resources in the least likely place: not in the 'best of things,' but in that which has 'no proper place.'

Book Description
When Amitava Kumar left Patna, India, he envisioned himself as an up-and-coming citizen of the world, leaving behind the confines of Indian traditions. Yet like the wave of exiles that preceded him, he found that once we leave our past, we are defined by it: in the U.S. he is pigeonholed by his appearance and quizzed about saris and arranged marriages.
"There is no beginning that is a blank page," writes Kumar. Circling the three capitals of the Indian diaspora, Bombay-London-New York captures the contours of the expatriate experience, touching on the themes of abandonment, nostalgia, and exile that have powered some of the most prominent Indian writers today -- Naipaul, Rushdie, Roy, Kureishi, as well as E.M. Forster and Gandhi.
With resonant, poetic language and a storyteller's sensibility, Kumar explores the works of these writers through the lens of his own life as an immigrant and writer. As their fiction reveals, the past of the expatriate is mythical, shaped by memory and loss.
With tales of life in India and London and meditations on the form Indian fiction gives to the lives of those who read about it, this is a sweeping, passionate search to find one's own story in the stories of others.
Customer Reviews:
An authoritative survey of Indian writings and Indian diaspora.......2006-08-01
Amitava Kumar, in this work surveys the Indian writing in English through his own life and writings. He explores the socio-geography of the Indian diaspora (20 million people living outside there home country) while touching upon the common feeling of nostalgia and nationalism. His social view in not only confined to his own experience, but also draws from the fictional world created by various exemplary authors like V S Naipaul and Hanif Kureishei.
This book is a curious mix of autobiography, literary commentary, stories from Bollywood movies and stories from the contemporary News!
Apart from its luminous prose, the book is adored with photos and poems. The photos and very well chosen and are absorbing. Although, at some places, they do not fit very well with the text. The poems are brief and simple. The quotations from various other authors make this work an entertaining crisp read.
Being Amitava Malkovich.......2002-10-25
What we get with this book is a sure-footed survey of indian writing in English that feels like a grand tour by a docent who also happens to be your close friend. Amitava Kumar is an emerging literary voice from the indian subcontinent. The intimate prose evokes feelings of alienation and displacement that serve as a recurrent theme in a manner common to many expatriate authors but what is special with this book is a poignant sociological component. The author is not content to rely on his own keen observations of the real world; he delves into the world of fiction that many writers of eminence have created. The academic and the writer of fiction come together in a way that left me feeling good about myself.
Several photographs adorning the book give an air of authencity to the prose. The book brings a sense of immediacy to the forgotten places in india in a way that was never done before. With this book he has created a portal to his brain much like the movie "Being John Malkovich".
