As a foreign correspondent and writer for the Washington Post, Ward Just knows Washington. And what he knows he's put into his latest political novel, Echo House, the story of three generations of a powerful Washington family. The book's title refers to the Behl family mansion, a historic landmark that has belonged to the Behls since the Wilson administration. Constance Behl, matriarch of the family, buys the house when it seems her husband, Senator Adolph Behl, is a sure bet for the vice presidential slot on his party's ticket. The political jockeying that surrounds this nomination and Senator Behl's mortifying disappointment are dealt with in the first 20 pages, leaving the rest of the book to chronicle the fortunes of the senator's son, Axel, and grandson, Alec.

Axel grows up to be a wartime hero and, later, an eminent leader of the Democratic Party. He marries Sylvia, a poet, and has a son, Alec, who grows up to be a powerful beltway lawyer. Outside this family circle there is a host of minor characters--politicians and politician's wives, reporters, lawyers, generals and civil servants. But throughout Echo House the main character is politics itself, as men and women wheel and deal, coax and bribe and threaten their way into power. By the end, it is evident that individuals come and go, but the system is forever.

Book Description

Here is Just's masterpiece - an epic chronicle of three generations of Washington power brokers and the womenfolk who loved them (except when they didn't). The Washington Post described this book as "a fascinating if ultimately painful fairy tale, complete with a family curse. The decline of the Behls represents the decline of Washington from the bright dawn of the American century into the gathering shadows of an alien new millennium."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars languid, melancholy, somewhat readable.......2004-11-25

I think most of the 3 and 4 star reviewers have it about right: this book is like a date with a nice but not-that-interesting person: inoffensive but not exactly leaving you hungry for more. Just is writing about Washington's lower upper class- Washington "fixers": people less well known that Presidents and Cabinet members, not as common as the Hill aides and ambitious young lawyers who cover Washington like locusts. Just makes these people seem as uninteresting as they are in reality, perhaps even more so.

5 out of 5 stars Melancholy in Washington.......2002-12-31

Melancholy in Washington is a good description of this very well done novel by Ward Just. It sets a very accurate tone in chronicling the adventures of a multigenerational family of
power brokers and their families and especially their women. Having lived in Washington for nearly 40 years, I see many of the characters in real people I have known here.

2 out of 5 stars Plenty of sublety and nuance - not much of a story.......2001-04-05

I only slogged through this snoozer because I had read A Dangerous Friend by Just and thought it was very good. Therefore, surely this book would eventually become interesting to read rather than the chore it proved to be. Not so.

I found this to be a book that doesn't do a good job of developing its characters or its story. Even though I'm interested in Washington and its inside baseball, this book just didn't tell enough to be interesting. Everything was vague and cloaked in secrecy and dullness. Not a very good formula for a book in my view. The author is clearly a gifted wordsmith, but he failed me as a "storysmith" in this effort. I'd recommend you skip it.

5 out of 5 stars Ten stars.......2001-01-20

This is one of the best American novels of the twentieth century. It is brilliant in concept and spans generations in a fascinating and compelling story. It helps to bring some political knowledge to this story -- if you don't know who Joe McCarthy, McGeorge Bundy, Adlai Stevenson, Dean Rusk and others are and were, you will miss some of the book's subtler themes and dimensions. A powerful and beautifully written story about the permanent overclass of Washington DC -- the men who run the country from behind the scenery and their conflicts with their women. This is an elegaic and sad book, and a subtle one -- not for Harold Robbins fans. Just's finest book and he is one of America's finest authors -- a great place to start to get to know his many fine novels.

2 out of 5 stars Ugh... fell short on so many scores..........2000-08-20

Not enough history, not enough politics, not enough good solid trash, I couldn't fully enjoy this novel any way I sliced it - but I tried. Echo House takes us on the journey of the imaginary Behl family, a family whose "founders" (men and women) sought to prop it up so that it might be a great political (Washington DC) family, but whose faults and struggles lead only, in the end, to its decline. The novel begins in the early part of century when the reader is given to understand that Adolph Behl is overlooked as a Vice Presidential candidate during his party's convention - his bitterness at this turn of events spurs on first his son Axel, then grandson, Alec. It is these three men, their lives, and what they make of them - that we are reading about. For a former DC resident, this book made for fun reading in the recognition and nostalgia of places, people, and events mentioned in either reverence or disgust. In general, though, the book didn't reach me. There is so much fiction in the reality of Washington DC that I would prefer to read fact. I recognize that there is a great deal of the backstabbing, the "getting off the hook", the sleeping around, and the general lack of decorum existing in the political world of the nation's capital. But I also think that the fact that this was not a great autobiography of a real political family but rather a mediocre fictional account of an imaginary patriarchal family leaves the reader somewhat disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Christine Green is a great discovery!.......2005-06-29

After reading this book, I've started reading more in the series -- this book is kind of in the middle of what Green has written in the Kate Kinsella series.

Kate is kind of a Kinsey Milhone in Britain detective. She is living above a funeral home in this book, and her unusual buddy is an older man -- Hubert, the undertaker who is her landlord. They have a dog that's technically his, but when she's walking the dog one rainy night, she -- or rather the dog -- finds a young girl under a bush. The girl isn't making a lot of sense, but Kate takes her home to dry off. This girl has a strange story to tell about a half-remembered childbirth and a baby she never saw -- born dead, she was told. The conception of this child is even less remembered that the birth -- and it sounds very fishy to Kate, who believes the girl's story. She sets off to find a man who might be behind all of this -- a man who is with the police.

Green is great at plotting, and Kate and her friends are likeable and interesting. I look forward to the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing characters, well written. Definitely a winner.......2003-05-19

It looked like a load of rags and Private Investigator Kate Kinsella tried to pull her dog away from it--but then it moved. The rags turned out to be a young woman, recently pregnant, and close to suicide. Kate drags her back to her apartment but Megan appears nearly frozen with fear. Surely her story of date rape, a kidnapped child, and drugs is the crazed imagination of a woman with no life but her television. Except Kate hears the very real death threats over Megan's phone.

Against her will, Kate is dragged into an investigation of a crime that might not have happened. If it did happen, the criminal is a senior London police officer--someone who appears beyond Kate's reach. Kate's client is easily confused, never made a report of the rape, and is the type that would be confused on the witness stand. And the threatening caller seems willing to do anything to stop Megan--and Kate.

English author Christine Green has written a fascinating and compelling story. Kate Kinsella makes a wonderful character. She is just incompetent enough to be human, with a mother who would embarass anyone and a love life that wouldn't even fill a short story, but she is also plucky, brave, and a good sport (most of the time). As Kate lurches from danger to danger, hoping to find evidence before her suspect can find her, I found myself nearly holding my breath waiting to see what disaster would hapen next.

DEADLY ECHO is a top-notch mystery with a fine private investigator lead character.

2 out of 5 stars Healthy must have a different meaning for the author. Disappointing!.......2007-06-22

As someone who has been involved, for over 30 years, in helping people change their eating lifestyle to health-supporting, I do not advocate the white, cane sugar that humans shovel into their bodies by the boatload. This book, although eschewing white, cane sugar, has other health damaging ingredients that it recommends, including margarine, which has been discovered to be an extremely damaging food due to its trans-fatty acids, canned biscuits that contain questionable additives plus bleached white flour, and boxed baking mixes. Plus other questionable ingredients such as mini-chocolate chips (contains sugar), white, distilled vinegar, graham crackers (additives and sugar), all purpose flour, sugar-free maple syrup (usually sweetened with aspartame, very unhealthy), and more.

I love good food and have spent years learning how to make the foods we enjoy, such as blueberry muffins, candies, breads, cookies, and such, taste as close to their "junk" relatives as possible, yet be health supporting. I am continually asked for recipes from people who don't know anything about healthy eating. So, you see that I'm not recommending that people live on only brown rice and tofu. For example, my chocolate chip (grain sweetened), coconut (unsweetened) pecan, oatmeal cookies are the best, all without bleached white flour, sugar, or margarine.

The bottom line is that the author obviously thinks healthy only means cutting down on white sugar and fat. Ms. Lund, there is a whole lot more to healthy, tasty, and delicious cooking than that. If I could return this book I would. If you are really interested in healthy eating, don't buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Cooking Healthy with Splenda.......2007-01-12

Very clear instructions. For the most part, ingredients one would have in one's kitchen. Especially, nice is the info at the bottom of each recipe telling calories, diabetic exchanges, even healthy exchanges for Weight Loss Choices. There is a list of favorite brands in the front. All the recipes sound good when one is reading through them, especially when one is humgry. For instance, the Apple Biscuit Breakfast Treat on page 184 sounds so good that one will not feel slighted to be on a diabetic diet when it is prepared.

Worth the money. Several recipes that I want to try.
A book nice enough to leave out on the counter.

4 out of 5 stars Taking the 'Sin' Out of Cinnamon Rolls.......2007-03-29

With three children in Iraq during the first Gulf War and weighing 300 pounds, Joanna Lund found herself thinking about death. After losing 130 pounds, Healthy Exchanges was born, and this cookbook is the latest in her series.

Although a discussion about Splenda's safety would have been helpful, recipes like Decadent Fudgy Brownie Pie, Classic Cherry Cobbler, Cappuccino Cheesecake and even Choca-Cola Cake are sure to delight dieters. Not every recipe works, but many do. So can we finally take the "sin" out of cinnamon rolls? This book says yes - and I tend to agree.

                          5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-03-08

I am a lifetime Weight Watcher and involved with diabetics. This book has been a tremendous addition to my kitchen and I certainly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing but not a Total Waste.......2006-12-27

I am diabetic and my husband is borderline diabetic, so I had high hopes for this cookbook. I don't know what the people who gave these recipes good reviews are used to eating, but I have baked for a great many years and am used to the taste of traditional baked goods. I agree with the reviewer who wrote that the texture of some recipes is inedible, the gingerbread for instance and the brownie walnut pie is borderline. Most of the recipes need "fixing" to bring up the flavor. Lemon Crumb Bars--what a disaster! Two of the ingredients are 21 small fat-free saltine crackers made into crumbs, and reduced-fat biscuit baking mix. Can you imagine how salty this combination is? It was to be the cookie base for the bars and it just tasted like saltine crackers. You could barely taste the lemon flavor. What was the author thinking?! What was I thinking to even try such a recipe, for that matter?

I did have some successes. I really liked the Buttermilk Coffee Cake although it needed it's crumb topping spiced up. I also liked the coconut-rum-pineapple pie, but the texture was much better after it sat overnight. I will keep trying recipes off and on in hopes a few more of them will turn out well.

The hints about baking with Splenda are helpful, as is the nutrition breakdown at the end of each recipe.

4 out of 5 stars Yummy Low Carb, Low Fat Baking!.......2006-06-08

Due to a sugar metabolizing problem, I have been trying to find new ways to create some of the desserts that I love without all of the sugar. Lowering fat in dishes is also a concern for my mother, who suffers from a pancreas disorder. So, with those things in mind, I picked up this book to see if you could really substitute Splenda in most baking recipes. I was not disappointed.

Using ingredients that are easy-to-find or often on hand, I was able to whip up a simple dessert or yummy baked good that had low fat and low sugar without subtracting the taste. Unlike a previous reviewer, I had no problems with lack of taste in any of my dishes (and I rarely, if ever, use salt when baking...why add the sodium unless you absolutely have to?). I take great pride in my baking, and love to create yummy desserts for my family, and I was able to serve several of these dishes without any negative comments. I was happy they turned out so well, and it feels good to be serving a dish that is lower in fat and calories.

Some of our favorites include: Blueberry Orange Muffins, Heavenly Raspberry Chocolate Chip Muffins, Strawberry Dream Cake, Country Carrot Cake, Cheesecake Topped Fudge Brownies, Five Layer Bars, Country Baked Pudding, and Pineapple Rum Cheesecake. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars BAking with Splenda by JoAnna Lund.......2006-03-09

This book not only is filled with delicious recipes but it gives hints on use of Splenda and how to adapt it to your own recipes. I was delighted to find many of my old favorite tried and true recipes already adapted. Becky's Prize Winning Banana Bread recipe is a favorite that has replaced my own as it rates as good or better.
Being a borderline diabetic, I am happy to announce that I have yet to have one of the recipes in this book raise my sugar count over the accepted range.

3 out of 5 stars good introductory stuff but not enough solid info.......2007-05-17

This is a nice book for someone who is THINKING about gettin a conure. There is plenty there about different kinds of conures, what kind of behavior to expect, what type of cage to get, etc. Unfortunately, if you already have one, there isn't enough solid, tested information on things like symptoms and behaviors, things that are keys to understanding what your bird needs. I was hoping to see something on how to get rid of bad behaviors, how to properly interact with the bird to avoid them, but found very little on that. I'd also like to see some in-line references to other reading material - instead I ended up spending barely an hour reading this book and put it away with almost as many questions as I had before.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT & COMPLETE MANUAL FOR FIRST TIME OR EXPERIENCED CONURE OWNERS.......2007-01-29

This is a great manual for any conure owner. I own several books regarding conures & this is the only one I like so much it has prompted me to share my feelings in regards to its contents!

Contains great, practical, need to know, want to know, should know info for novices & pros alike. This book contains info on everything from selecting a conure to feeding (including highlighted, bulleted lists of treats & danger foods), health & hygiene (including how to clip wings & nails), cage sizes/accessories, living w/ Conures, behaviour & training.

I lived on a farm growing up & worked for a veterinarian who specialized in exotics (we saw & treated a lot of birds) so I consider myself to be relatively knowledgable about most animals & I was still quite impressed with this book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginner Bird Owners! .......2007-01-17

I thought this book was great for all conure owners, or if you are considering a conure. The information given was on the basics like feeding, housing, illnesses; what to watch out for. Foods, do's and don'ts....DON'T feed your conure avocado, it will kill your bird! I wouldn't have known this if I didn't research. I highly recommend this book if you are considering owning any type of conure!
                          GREAT BOOK with GREAT INFO!

4 out of 5 stars Good overall conure manual.......2006-11-14

This book does a good job at covering many aspects of the conure family. Detailed are the different species, thoughts about purchasing and housing consideration, daily maintenance and basic behavior modifications.

If you're thinking about obtaining a conure or general information, this is a great 1st read.

This book is BEAUTIFUL! Not your typical quilt project book - this is filled with so much more! The project directions were easy to follow and the quilts lovely. Added features included winery information; tasting party ideas; recipes; crafts; and even listings of wineries and quilt shops in various regions of the country. Reading through the book, I felt like I was THERE in the wine country with the author. Very informative and interesting to see how the author combined her love of quilting with her new love of "Wine Country".

                              Book Description

With a strong reference to early 1960s Afro-American soul illustration, Moshino crashes into the twenty-first century with his challenging and brilliant Euro-Asian reinterpretations. Katsura Moshino, now a cult hero in both Japan and the UK, has become the hot new graphic designer, interweaving his mix of funky psychedelic images with fifties cartoon art, sixties sci-fi, seventies black soul culture, and eighties hip-hop. His eccentric blend of styles and references has in a very short time made him one of the darlings of his field. Working only since the late 1980s, Moshino has amassed an incredible archive of images from projects varying from Nike advertisements to nightclub flyers to his own animation films. More than 100 color illustrations document this young and brilliant career. A must not only for graphic artists, designers, and illustrators, but also for Japanese manga followers and all-around Japanophiles hungry for what is new out of Japan.

This book is wonderful. It is intended for people that have an interest in either graphic design or illustration. It presents the work of an amazing Japanese artist that has managed to blend in pop culture, hip hop and Motown, into his work for CD covers and party flyers. His use of digital photography and computer illustration is exciting. A must have for those interested in underground culture and great art!
