Book Description

2 out of 5 stars Demasiado lento y tedioso........2007-09-25

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-10-01

An interesting, creative premise poorly executed. The plot develops too slowly; the motivations and personalities of the characters are never well developed.

2 out of 5 stars Mucho ruido y pocas nueces.......2001-08-06

2 out of 5 stars Una novela que nunca alcanza a despegar.......2001-03-15

3 out of 5 stars La ciencia del siglo XVI.......2000-12-27

4 out of 5 stars Cities of Vampires.......2004-07-19

Regina Blake and her vampire mistress Victoria head for France to seek clues to the fate of Regina's mother, Emma. The latter has been embraced as part of a murky Tremere plot to bring down the Prince of London. Even as their quest evolves, events in London threaten to explode. Lord Blake, Emma's husband, and Malcolm Seward, Regina's fiancée tear through the dark side of the city seeking traces of their loved ones, but despite causing considerable turmoil seem condemned to be always one step behind.

Other players have entered the fray as well. Beckett, a scholarly vampire with a compulsive interest in vampiric history, and Hesha Ruhadze, a mysterious Settite with his own agenda, temporarily join forces to try to discover answers, or perhaps to carry out an act or revenge, or to enlighten a goddess. On the human side Othman al-Masri seeks out the Society of Leopold, heir to the Inquisition and hunters of vampires.

Regina seems to make waves wherever she goes in vampire society. Although nothing more tha Victoria's protégée, turmoil seems to follow her. In A Morbid Initiation she witnessed the poisoning of Mithras, ruler of the London vampires. Now the pattern continues, for while Victoria copes with the intricacies of vampire politics, Regina is less patient, whether she is dealing with Francois Villon, the Prince of Paris, or anatole, the mad vampire priest whose abbey is hidden behind the gates of a prison.

Phillippe Boulle continues to weave an intricate plot without ever revealing the real goal. There is something underlying all this moves and counter-moves, but it always seems to lie just beyond out grasp. Just as Lord Blake never seems able to catch up with his daughter. The Madness of Priests add detail and texture to the story, but keeps a tight hold on its secrets. Detail tends to be the devil in white Wolf publications, since much of what is in the books will feed back into the game world on which they are based.

This hunger for information can slow down the flow of action excessively, but Boulle manages to avoid this fault, dancing on the edge of overwriting, but never quite stepping over. Instead, the finely drawn descriptions of Victorian London and post-Napoleonic Paris increase the reader's enjoyment. Welcome to the Masquerade...

5 out of 5 stars Blood sorcerers, wild chases, broken chains of love..........2003-08-19

Philippe Boulle did not let the fascination with Regina Blake, Victoria Ash, and the culture of Victoria times flounder.

Regina disappears with Victoria on her ever on-going quest to find out where her mother is, and if her mother still lives in the half-life of vampirism. Lord Blake, sober enough to realize that he has lost his daughter, and Malcolm, her fiancé search throughout London, but are always a behind the wily Victoria. Blake and Malcolm face death from creatures they do not understand. The caught a ghoul, the Ducheski's own group of demented servants who are allowed to kill, and to do whatever it takes to protect the Ducheski clan. Ghouls regenerate, and this leads to a climactic decision where Blake and Malcolm are concerned.

Did you know there are political levels in the vampire world, and woe unto the vampire that does not stay within the confines? Or, that it is a "mortal" sin for a vampire to kill another without permission? Oh, these factors come into play in magnificent ways.

In the meantime, Victoria takes Regina to France, where a strange world of the undead reveals that Emma Blake is a tool of the blood sorcerers. Here Regina meets the mad priest Anatole, and sees that both Victoria and Anatole are more interested in making Regina belong to them than in any way freeing her mother. Their escape from Anatole is difficult, and it is here that Regina faces Malcolm for the first time since her initiation.

Boulle's characters grow and evolve. I wondered what decision Regina would make, considered options, and was concerned for them as I read the book. What greater compliment can you give a writer than you care about his characters?

I can hardly wait for book three of this trilogy. This book is worth five stars to me.

a great hulk novel. i've always liked the battles between the hulk and the abomination, and this one is a little different, because, as dr. banner put it,''this isn't like emil. emil kickes and bites.''this and peter david's book have to be my favs for hulk novels. a good read that kept me busy.

                  4 out of 5 stars Wow........1999-11-30

Wow! What a wonderfully pleasant surprise this book was. I still can't believe that the Hulk, a character i've never been overly fond of, has managed to score two of my highest reviews (this one and Peter David's book)! I guess i have to start this review off with an apology. In reviewing the Doomsday trilogy i criticized the need for Sean Morgan and SAFE, arguing that the more familiar Nick Fury and SHIELD could play much the same roll. Well, that's certainly not true in this book. Sean Morgan is a pivotal AND compelling character in Abominations. Jason Henderson fleshes out a history for the character that intricately ties him into the plot. A strong emotional triangle is set between Morgan, the Hulk, and the Abomination that takes takes this book up a step or two above the usual fare. Henderson's portrayal of the villian of the piece, the Abomination, is as compelling (in it's own way) as the character of Sean Morgan. In fact, Henderson appears to have been giving almost as much room to play with the Abomination (an official comic character) as Sean Morgan (a character unique to the Marvel novels). The book benefits from this, and i can only hope that the bigwigs at Marvel take note. Stretching the boundaries with establish characters may create some continuity problems....but this freedom allows the writers to create a better story. It's at this point past readers of my reviews probably expect me to mention what i didn't like about this book. Well, surprise....i liked everything about this book. The Hulk was written extremely well, and easily would have been the highlight of this book if it wasn't for the exception portrayals of Morgan & the Abomination that , at times, overshadowed our lead. The plot was good, but it was the intricately weaved sub-plot that kept me rivited. If you're not totally into this book by the end of chapter one, you might as well just stop reading...'cause you just don't get it! Heck, as i write this review i'm remembering more and more how much i liked. I'm also trying to figure out if there's any good reason why this book shouldn't get five stars. Hmmmmm.... OK, maybe one little thing. I would have liked a tad more humour. But that's REALLY nit-picking. -- Peter James Gallacher

5 out of 5 stars the best Hulk book.......1999-02-02

Yeah, I know, everyone loves _What Savage Beast_ by Peter David, and it is a great book by the guy who knows the Hulk best, but I think _Abominations_ is even _better_. Henderson's a really good writer whose characterizations and dialogue are fantastic, and who gives us a much more interesting Abomination than we've _ever_ gotten in the comics from anyone, including Mr. David. (The whole book's worth it for the unstable molecules conversation. Trust me, buy the book and you'll understand it.)

5 out of 5 stars Abominations hardly abominable!.......1998-08-13

Funny, I wasn't expecting anything more than a ood timekiller out of Jason Henderson's Incredible Hulk Novel, Abominations. Having read his Highlander novel, I should have know better. What I got was a smart, fast paced adventure with feeling, and a suprisingly emotional conection. I've never been a huge fan of the Hulk's, but after this, I think my tastes might be changing. Mr. Henderson's ability to strip bare a character's soul leaves the reader breathless, and maybe gives a little glimpse into our own hearts, and a thought to get you through. Just remember, it's only Unstable Molecules. Easily, my favorite book of the past two years.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a fight........1997-07-16

For a book which stars 2 of Marvel's heaviest hitters, this book has a lot more going for it than just 2 big guys smashing each other(although that is there too). There is depth of character and a darn good story told here as wel

                  5 out of 5 stars rose lover's dream.......2007-07-15

This volume deals with just about every rose ever grown as well as other flowers to accompany them in arrangements and on cakes. I like the step-by-step color photos. There's a cake on page 70 that stopped me dead. I always look for the show stopper cakes and this is one of them. Templates are inclueded.

3 out of 5 stars My prior review was for Sugar Roses -- not this one!.......2003-06-27

I wrote a review for Sugar Roses (a book I said is OUTSTANDING) and they've put that review onto this book as well (Sugar Flowers for All Seasons). I've noticed they duplicated the reviews from others too. I have not looked Sugar Flowers for All Seasons so I can't say one way or the other if it's any good, (although considering the author, it's probably great).

It was nice to see a book with more than just roses and by more than one artist. There are some neat ideas with good instructions. I have only been making sugar flowers for about 7 years and was glad to see a few new ideas.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING book of its kind.......2002-09-18

This book is not only EXQUISITE to look at, but very detailed in its instruction. Since it is mainly roses, you get more varieties, which I find a tremendous bonus, since most cakes only display your basic white, red or pink rose. The book is separated into luxurious flower arrangements (that highlight a certain variety of rose) and the following pages tell you in detail how to create that rose, the other plants in the arrangement, and to assemble. All of the pages, including the ones of directions, are in lush full color photographs, and laid out as beautifully as the incomparable flower arrangements. Worth EVERY penny.

                  Book Description

Animals and nature can act as teachers and guides, send warnings of impending danger, or simply make life more joyous. More profoundly, intuitive bonds with the natural world can foster life-altering changes and spiritual redirection. Beyond Words describes what people experience when they connect intuitively with animals and nature. In her first book, Learning Their Language, Marta Williams taught readers how to make this connection; here she explores how life changes once they do. Williams describes a photographer who is healed by dolphins in the waters off Hawaii, how a rottweiler helps her female companion seek the assistance she needs, and how young Neil and his horse Feste together learned about life, death, and loyalty. Easy-to-follow exercises and practices help readers experience these same types of communication.

In this book Marta Williams carries forward the concepts described in Learning Their Language. She gives many case histories, examples of how intuitive communication has been critical in the lives of the animals whose cases are described. This is both fascinating and moving. The implications are unnerving, but worth incorporating into your world view.

4 out of 5 stars TALKING WITH ANIMALS.......2006-11-10

This book was so interesting that I read it in two sessions. Parts were funny and parts were sad, but it was all well done and believable. Makes me want to sit right down and learn how to do this myself. Money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal!!!.......2005-11-02

Probably most folks who will look at this book are already believers in animal communication but even for those like me who are, there is an abundance of profound and amazingly touching anecdotes in it.

My wife and I have called on Marta for help with our cats on several occasions with great success. As a direct result of reading her previous book we can now often communicate directly with them ourselves. This new book is truely a gem and whichever book you read first, you will likely end up wanting to get the other as well! They are easy to read and understand, and make great gifts! Even children who are too young to be able to read on them on their own can learn to communicate with animals; actually learn more easily than adults.

Even if you don't have a live-in companion, animals are all around us and they love it when you make deeper contact with them. If you love animals, this book is a must have!

4 out of 5 stars For All Animal Lovers!.......2005-10-05

Author Marti Williams takes us on a wonderful journey as she shares countless stories of animals interacting with humans. In this book she tells of communication between many animals and humans. In these communications the animals; dogs, cats, horses, etc. share their feelings, likes, dislikes, worries and such with the person they are communicating with. Interesting! She also gives accounts where lost pets are found, and emotional problems are solved.
I am an animal lover so this book definitely touched a soft spot in my heart. I am not sure that I fully agree with how she communicates with the animals and nature, but I definitely know that everything living share a common bond. If what she is doing helps even one animal to have a better life, I say Amen and thank you to her! This certainly is a very well written book with some wonderful stories and information that I feel will help and touch many hearts along the way. Animal lovers and pet owners will appreciate this read and find it very beneficial.

                  5 out of 5 stars Interesting Stories.......2005-09-19

Marta shares many interesting stories in this followup to Learning Their Language. Understanding your pet is so important, and the more we can learn about and develop positive interactive communication signals the stronger will be the bond we share with our furry family members. Being "in-touch" with
your pet is an important part of enhancing the human-animal bond, and a critical part of a successful holistic health care program. Those clients whose patients I am proud to treat who are most in-tune with their pets have the greatest successes with both preventing and treating diseases.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful little quilts.......2005-07-29

I am fortunate to have seen the quilts in this book in real life when Ms Gravatt visited the London Quilters in the mid 1990s to exhibit her work. The workmanship is quite exquisite and these little quilts really are miniature replicas of full sized quilts.

The book contains patterns for 17 miniature quilts. The techniques used range from Hawaiian applique and traditional applique methods to Grandmother's Flower Garden using the English paper piecing method and even a delightful little Yo-yo quilt.

This book is not aimed at the beginner but at the quilter who understands how patchwork and applique quilts are made and planned and how to choose fabrics. Some suggestions are made at the beginning for finishing techniques and there are some general basic instructions but most of the quilts are complex enough that you will need to know what you are doing before you start.

That said it's a delightful book, beautifully photographed, which will grace any patchworker's shelves even if used purely as eye candy. And you never know when you will need to make that special quilt for a special doll!

Text extracted from opening pages of book: HEIRLOOMS IN MINIATURES BY ANNE HOLLINGSWORTH WHARTON WITH A CHAPTER ON MINIATURE PAINTING BY EMILY DRAYTON TAYLOR WITH NUMEROUS REPRODUCTIONS OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF COLONIAL, REVOLUTIONARY, AND MODERN MINIA TURE PAINTERS PHILADELPHIA & LONDON J. B. LIPPINCOTT COMPANY TO HELEN BELL WHOSE FRIENDSHIP WAS A JOY, WHOSE MEMORY IS AN INSPIRATION PREFACE To gather together some interesting and representative American miniatures, and to accompany them with a brief record of the individuals whom they represent, was the first intention of the author of this volume. In the course of her researches, and while in corre spondence with families owning precious heir looms in miniatures, so much of interest was brought to light with regard to early American painters, that this book has grown into a chronicle of the sayings and doings of the artists, as well as of those whom they por trayed. For this divergence from her original design the writer feels that she need make no apology, in view of the interest that belongs to the reminiscences and anecdotes which have thus been brought to light, our early artists being men of attractive personality, whose histories are inseparably connected with their country's progress in the arts and sciences, as well as with her Colonial and her Revolu tionary life. PREFACE Without in any sense attempting to supply the much needed history of American art for which the writer has in vain sought the libra ries of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, she ventures to believe that she here presents many facts with regard to the art life of the country which are unknown to the general reader, in connection with much family data, historical and reminiscent. The author desires to express her thanks to those who have confided to her care the originals of miniatures which are here repro duced, and takes pleasure in making her acknowledgments for the use of diaries, letters, and family data to Miss Elizabeth Hesselius Murray, of West River, Maryland ; to General Charles W. Darling, of Utica, New York ; to Mr. Jonathan Trumbull, of Norwich, Connecticut, and to Miss Blanche Sully, Miss Anna and Miss Mary Peale, Mrs. Henry S. Huidekoper, Miss Hannah M. Milligan, Dr. Charles E. Cadwalader, the Honorable Craig Biddle, Mr. James S. Biddle, Mr. Horace W. Sellers, Dr. Albert Peale, and Mr. Walter P. Brown, of Philadelphia. For a valuable chapter upon Miniature Painting as an Art she is indebted to her friend Mrs. J. Madison Taylor, of Philadel PREFACE phia, some of whose beautiful miniatures adorn the pages of this volume. This is a timeless classic, and not just among memoirs, because the subject was a great American---a man who "had no get-back in him." Nate Shaw (real name Ned Cobb) had an amazing memory, and also an acute understanding of the post-Civil War rural South. The rhythm of the seasons, work routines, knowledge of livestock, nature and people too, combine for a profound view of a vanished America. (If you want to really know about mules, Ned's the man.) But Ned didn't just observe, he worked with the Alabama Sharecroppers' Union and defended powerless friends, serving 12 years in prison for his pains. This activism sets him apart from Kas Maine, a South African sharecropper to whom he's been compared in recent years. The earthy dialect wears out some readers, but otherwise "All God's Dangers" is compelling from start to end. Writers from Wendell Berry to Pete Daniel praise both man and book, while John Beecher's "In Egypt Land" is a moving poetic rendition of Ned's story. R. Kelley, "Hammer & Hoe" vividly recreates 1930s Alabama; on Kas Maine, see C. Van Onselen, "The Seed Is Mine." But Ned tells about his world far better than the others. In living, then narrating, a life of great struggle lived with great dignity, Ned Cobb performed a signal service---for all of us. We are in your debt!

5 out of 5 stars Family, Race, Class and Farming in Alabama.......2005-01-06

In the middle of Rosengarten's book, truly a masterpiece of oral history memoir making, Nate Shaw says "all God's dangers ain't a white man." This would seem truly a remarkable thing for a black man who spent over a decade in an Alabama prison to say, but as a farmer growing cotton in Alabama during the first half of the twentieth century it quickly makes sense once he explains it. Shaw's story of his chaffing under his good for nothing father's roof; his growing prosperity as share cropper and than as a yeoman farmer; his hucksterism when dealing with violent and hostile whites attempting to cheat him; the defense of fellow small farmers that got him thrown in jail during the Great Depression; and his takes on the science of farming, race relations, the American class system and his own life experiences show Shaw to be a master story teller and Rosengarten and master interviewer. The combination of these two was absolute dynamite.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Nate........2001-01-05

Nate Shaw was the father of my Uncle Oscar Turner's best friend. His real name was Nate Cobb and the family of the son, Lorraine, is prominent in the Middletown, Ohio ghetto.

The author has done a masterful job of illustrating how greatness was thrust upon him. Nate never set out to become a hero, only to protect his own dignity and provide for his children.

I do not believe that there is a better book for teaching about the lies of 20th century sharecroppers. Theirs is an overlooked legacy.

Ted Rosengarten is a masterful writer. All God's Dangers is an amazing undertaking that brings Nate Shaw's story to life. After a few pages, it's almost as if you can hear Nate talking. A must read for anyone interested in history and anyone who wants to learn how a book should be written. And Rosengarten's Tombee, if it can be found, is another must read.
