This type of book is typically not my scene at all. I am a rather avid reader but have strange habits (compared to other avid readers). The most notable of these is that I only read one book at a time (never more than one simultaneously). Being male I typically read the adventure/action novels by the likes of Vince Flynn, Tom Clancy, or Dan Brown.
So you might ask why did I read this book? A few days after losing a uncle and then a close friend to cancer (a few days later), I found myself reading a time magazine cover story about dealing with death and terminal illness. In the article, it mentioned Stephanie Williams and her final project; "Enter Sandman". At this time I was rather destrout and thought the novel might be beneficial to me and my emotional state.
Being my first (what you might consider) "chick-flick" book, it took me a few chapters to get used to the writing style. However, while the book is prude (not for anyone under 16 I would say), and jumps around every couple chapters of so, this was not uncomfortable for me as the reader to follow at all.
Finally, I just want to say that the book is very uplifting if given the poper amount of time, leaves everyone with an urge to question themselves and what they want out of life. Many books have made laugh out loud but this was the first to actually make me cry. I highly recommend it.
Finally, in case some of you are wondering, the title is in fact a reference to the Metallica song.
Interesting, but doesn't quite add up.......2004-11-08
I really wanted to love or like this book. And it is a valiant effort...other reviewers have perhaps not mentioned that the author wrote it while suffering from terminal breast cancer. She died this past summer. It is a major achievement that she got this book out.
I'm interested in cancer and the issues surrounding people who die from it, as my mother did five years ago. But this novel somehow didn't really affect me much. It didn't get at the horror and pain I saw first hand, and instead of understanding what my mother went through better, I felt like maybe this book wasn't really that worthwhile.
It veers between three eras: when the heroine Trisha is in college, when she is a young curator in NYC; and finally, when, in her mid 30s, she's is dying of breast cancer. In attempting to link these eras, Williams creates a rather lightweight, inconsistent heroine. The prose is pretty awkward, and there are many cliches. I just wish it had really touched me, because Williams's own life and death story sure does.

Okay, so it gets off to a slow start, and the author was not a soaring lyricist. But it really does pick up steam midway through, and it packs a wallop at the end. The two main characters are artfully drawn, and as the plot narrows down to the two of them, the story becomes quite lovely. Add to that the author's personal narrative, in that she was literally racing her own death to publish this novel, and there is quite a lot to recommend 'Enter Sandman'.
Very Strange Book.......2004-09-03
I have a hate-love relationship with this book. I am plowing through it but don't really like it. I can't stop reading it, but the characters don't speak to me at all. The writing is pretty sloppy, the story skips around in a hard-to-follow manner, the language is pretty raw (and I am no prude). I'm 2/3 through and haven't run into the cancer thing yet, but I doubt it will improve my poor impression of this book. Sorry.

As a fellow breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 34, I am looking forward to reading this book. I highly suggest every young woman to at least sign it out from the library to acquaint themselves with how breast cancer effects young women. It is much more common in young women than most of us think. I certainly didn't expect to be diagnosed w/o any risk factors. I also have a 31 yr friend in Stage 4, when is incurable.

Superb Brooding Dark Fantasy.......2005-08-25
An amazing, fresh, sf-fantasy novel, with a gut-wrenching beginning. Lots of terrific creative new ideas such as the "Sha Muira" assassin that figures so prominently in the story. I really enjoyed the tension between Gaultry during the slow transformation of the young assassin. I enjoyed this book the first time I read it and I am now re-reading it once again. It is just as good on the second reading, although, the surprise element is gone. Now I look forward to reading the earlier book in this series, as well as the newer sequels to this excellent book.

This book is not as exciting as the first, typical for a trilogy. I don't really like how much if focuses on Gaultry because I always wanted to hear more about Mervion. Maybe that will be in the third book. Sometimes I don't like reading about drama after drama and this book does have a lot of fighting and violence but overall it is very interesting and definetely well written. Just don't expect easy paced or light hearted!

An engaging story, the heroin is strong & magical. The story is original & light. This book follows Gaultry -the Glamour/Witch- in her fight to free Teilmark from The Bissanty Empire's clutches. You get to know more about Bissanty & the way the people live & feel. I was intrigued by the religion they follow. I still want to know more about Mervion, Gaultry's sister & Martin.
My only remark is that sometimes Ms. Reimaan writing is a little distracting, like she is trying a little too hard to convey a thought or describe a scene.
All in all a very good story. Thank you Ms. Reimann. Can't wait to read the 3rd book.

I greatly enjoyed reading the adventures of Gaultry and her companions.... once i had finished the two books in the series i just wanted to read more- there are so many questions i have about the characters. Katya really brought life to her book, to her story but i urge her to write the third book- i'm waiting with others to find out how Gaulrty lives the rest of her life
A Tremor in the Bitter Earth.......2001-03-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and thought that it was as satisfying as the first part in this series. New characters serve to help the action along; they are appealing and interesting. However, I thought that some characters, such as Mervion and Martin Stalker, should have had more attention payed to them. I eagerly await Reimann's third part to this series. There remain many questions to be answered.

Having been a staunch Eco fan for quite some time, I stumbled across this book and its companion, "The Bomb and the General" quite by accident in a book search. Of course, I purchased both books, ostensibly for my two children, but secretly they were for me. I would give this book a higher rating if I was reviewing it solely for an adult audience.
The collage artwork is charming, and the text has the universality of a fable. However Eco never indulges in sentimentality when dealing with the serious subject matter of human intolerance and the need for a global consciousness (heavy stuff!) Children will enjoy the tale - perhaps the illustrations are not glitzy enough for today's market, but their simplicity enhances the mythic quality of the writing.
Hopefully, this book will trigger some indepth discussion between children and their carers about human nature. An excellent eco-friendly book for ALL the family!
The Three Astronauts.......2000-07-20
We purchased this book for our son whose reading material is at the 4 to 8 yrs level.
This is a picture book & the story is about three astronauts (one from USA, one from China & one from Russia) who find themselves together in a situation where they learn to overlook their differences & learn to work together.
Our only disappointment with this book is the symbolic representations (illustrations) used to depict the three astronauts. Our son was expecting to see the astronauts depicted as people. The astronauts are represented by three pieces of paper - the American is a piece of chewing gum paper, the Russian & Chinese are represented by pieces of paper with Russian & Chinese script. While I can see merit in the concept, I really do think this level of comprehension is beyound that of a child.

This report describes an adaptation of the discrete ordinates technique for handling both thin (haze) and thick (natural cloud) optical media in a consistent manner. Media are modeled via uniform density cubical scattering cells (assuming that incident diffuse streams have uniform radiance over each input face). These assumptions allow the analytic evaluation of transmission factors and volume- averaged unscat- tered illumination across a cell in evaluating scattered streaming energies at each cell exit face. This initial analysis leads to an energy accounting technique which replaces energy not accounted for via transmission and diffuse single scattering with a surface scattering effect. Solar/lunar direct irradiance and graybody radiation are also considered. Monte Carlo analyses were used to determine the accuracy of the proposed methods. Path point-to-point calculations are described that adapt the outputs of the RT code to provide limiting path radiance information for visualization of could fields. An analysis of the scattering properties of aerosols as scale transformed Legendre polynomial expansions is also provided.

I enjoyed reading this cookbook and feel certain I'll use it one day, but it's not the best for every day cooking. It's a bit old fashioned and many of the recipes are very high in fats and calories.

Junior League cookbooks are an interesting phenomenon in that they document regional cooking in a really grass roots way.
This is one of the classics of Louisiana cooking. Every one has it and uses it down here. I remember it as a chilld learning to cook in New Orleans. I just bought a new clean one to replace the one that drowned.
Some of these recipes are really dated, very fifties, but interesting to read. Many are authentic 19th century Creole cooking, making this a great historical document for you REALLY hardcore foodies. And there's plenty of old fashioned healthy slow food that stands the test of time. Pair it with Charleston Reciepts and you have a food anthropology seminar... (another Junior League book from the Carolinas)
Notice I say Creole? "Cajun" was something completely different, different culture, different parts of the state. It's now a marketing term that has no respect for the
differences in styles, unfortunately- but this book predates that.
The River Road is about big cities and plantations; this is the French/ African/ native foods fusion that defines Creole. And a lot of very odd cocktails and punch ideas.
A great read and a great working book.

Hmmmm.......2006-03-20
I was disappointed by this book, and I'm still not exactly sure why. It was definitely informative, and did show several good methods for adjusting my dogs. But it assumed a lot of technical and anatomical knowledge that I'm sure the majority of potential readers does not have, and in fact even with my own fairly in-depth canine knowledge I felt uncomfortable with many of the techniques, especially the one that starts with a disclaimer about how risky it is, says "do not attempt this at home" and then goes right on to detail how to do it.
I guess my impression was that the book was really written by a vet for other vets, under the guise of being aimed at the general public. There is a lot of soapboxing in it, too, about how vets aren't allowed to practice chiropractic and chiropractors aren't allowed to practice on animals... and while this, if still true, definitely sucks - I didn't buy the book to read about it!
Goin' to the Dogs.......2003-02-06
This book has saved my dog's dignity on more than one occasion. There truly is nothing more gratifying than finding the trouble spot, based solely on observing my dog's behavior, and then being able to refer to this wonderful book for stretching and therapeutic techniques that allow my dog to feel wonderful, almost instantly. I have bought this book for at least 3 of my dog owning friends who swear by it.

Good, thorough explanation of chiropractic in relation to dogs. Good illustrations that help you understand the mechanism of the adjustment. As a chiropractor, I appreciate the detail Dr. Kamen goes into regarding adjustments; however, the typical dog owner may not be able to identify serious medical conditions that would be aggravated by performing a chiropractic adjustment versus a simple malalignment or "subluxation" that would respond very well. Good basic book to look at if you're thinking of taking your dog to an animal chiropractor. Great book to understand what it's all about and how your pet may benefit.

This book is helpful in identifying pieces, and learning some early history, but of course the prices are very outdated. The photography isn't of the best quality, and in some cases, unprofessional looking for a book, but still interesting and helpful. There were some inconsistencies in the text and errors with Pottery names, but I think it's worth owning if you are a yellow ware collector.

Misinformation in both of her books.......2002-09-23
Although there are nice pictures and NICE overinflated prices,
there is much information and labeling of yellow ware that is incorrect. It is obvious that this author doesn't know enough about pottery to be considered an authority on yellow ware. the only book that I know of that has the correct information for the begginer and the scholar is Gallo's book, a great reference. When is he going to do another one?

This book has even more information than the first!The color photography is wonderful.The entire book is filled with photos of many rare and unusual pieces. She has also added a section on Potters and their marks to aide in identification.A well researched and enjoyable guide for the Yellow Ware Collector. I hear number three's in the works.

Collecting Yellow Ware is a must have for the Yellow Ware collector.Lisa and Michael have created an in-depth guide of the history of this wonderful pottery.There are tips for collecting,and numerous color photographs.All arranged in and easy to follow format.I refer to it daily.

Definitely the Bible of yellow ware.......2000-02-08
There is no doubt that this book is the " bible" on yellow ware as my friends and others refer to it as such. It's a must for any collector and We finally tracked down the author J. Gallo to get a copy. Unlike other books this book has the correct information on the subject. Thanks John

This is one of the most organized and well written books on pottery. The information is excellent and I would recommend this book for all antique libraries.

bright and bold quilt patterns .......2005-05-03
Very bright and bold but with precise instructions for varying shapes and sizes of beadspreads, and incredibly simplistic.
15 quilts with a flat photograph of each displayed, and full-size templates for ease of copying.
The patterns cover fish, snakes, princesses, clowns and more - and taste comes into play. Nothing tonal or subdued here, all is bright primaries and contrasting fluroescent colours.
Depending on taste, it could appeal. The simple block patterns are easy enough to employ if you would like to start a child making one of these quilts, perhaps in the classroom.
All instructions are very detailed and concisely explained.
I wasn't particularly drawn to the quilts myself for my child, but perhaps others are and will be. Recommend library borrowing before purchasing this book, that one might not be disappointed.

You might end up making one for yourself.......2001-05-25
This book contains some wonderful patterns for quilts for kids (and you might end up making one for your inner child, too). There are fishes, snakes, geese and pigs; a princess and a dog nap quilt; samplers with farm animals, clowns and faces that can be individualized.
I have made a quilt with the brothers and sisters pattern and it was a lot of fun to play with the different fabrics for the dresses, stockings, shirts etc. It is not a quilt for a beginner, but not that difficult to sew either.
The wonderful color photos that are included always make me itch to try another pattern.
Not just for quilters!.......2001-03-01
This book is a good addition to my library. As an elementary art teacher, I am always looking for ideas to add to my lesson plan resources. Even when the students are just making quilt squares out of paper, this book was useful. The color pictures, and easy to follow steps, can give even a very meticulous planner, some extra help!

What a tour de force! This is one of the most beautifully designed books money can buy. Jonathan Barnbrook created (together with Damien Hirst) a timeless masterpiece of book design. If you want to see what is possible in this medium, you want to own this book. It is hauntingly beautiful, filled with amazing interactive pieces bringing you as close to Hirst's thinking and work as printed matter can get you.
What you are about to experience is a superbly intelligent visual introduction ot Hirst's process united with breathtaking depictions of the results.
A tiny note for the "practical book-user": This book is a work of Damien Hirst's. In such a publication one should not be surprised to find "safety guidlines" on how to successfully "deal with one's own life" - by using a gun. Gun owners might think twice before showing this book to their loved ones. Yet that's another story. Or maybe not, from Hirst's point of view? :*)

Damien Hirst is one of the most creative and influential contemporary artists. This is a wonderful book that examines the whole of Damien Hirst's career and all of his beautifully shcoking ideas. This book itself is an amazing work of art. It contains not only many wonderful full color panels, but it has all kinds of extremely interesting interactive pages that mimic some of Hirst's work. I highly suggest this wonderful book that does justice to this incredible artist.

The Empress of Jazz Piano.......2006-11-10
It's too easy (and condescending) to say that Mary Lou Williams was one of the greatest female jazz artists; she actually was one of the greatest, period. Her compositions and arrangements for the Andy Kirk band while she was a member throughout the 1930s brought much praise and admiration at the time (and still do today). (She also arranged for Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and other top-rated swing band leaders.) She was a sensational pianist, too, one of the finest boogie-woogie and stride players in jazz; she was also a great innovator and was among the first to master and play bebop in the 1940s. She greatly influenced many modern pianists, and personally changed the styles of Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. Mary Lou was a deeply religious person and wrote much religious music and kept very close relations with the Catholic Church (Ms. Dahl covers this aspect of Mary Lou's life very thoroughly.) Williams was a demanding player and seemed to have her greatest difficulties dealing with incompatible bass players (she once fired the great bassist Richard Williams during a New York club engagement). Linda Dahl has written a detailed and comprehensive biography of Mary Lou, covering all her musical and extra-musical activities. Included is a nicely organized selective discography. Anyone familiar with Mary Lou's playing or arranging and would like to learn more about her will benefit greatly by reading this excellent biography.

Morning Glory: A Biography of Mary Lou Williams is an interesting work that captures the personality of the wonderfully talented musician. The biography captures the struggles and achievements of Williams; it also shares some amusing details that make the book hard to put down for anyone interested in the careers of early black musicians.
A rewarding experience.......2001-08-18
An engagingly written book on a much ignored, extremely talented musician. Mary Lou Williams was (and is) respected by music giants the world over, including the likes of Duke Ellington. This book puts Williams' importance to American music in perspective, and gives her the overdue credit she so obviously deserves.
My recommendation is to put on a MLW disc, sit back and read. It will be a rewarding experience.
Highly recommended reading for American Jazz fans........2000-05-04
Mary Lou Williams' jazz experiences are detailed in a biography which covers both her life and career and her role as an Afro-American female musician. Dahl was given unlimited access to the Williams archive and her first full-length biography of Williams makes for an important coverage.
