Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's "The Godmother's Apprentice" was a masterpiece. It was an excellent display of talent and imagination. Although I was skeptical about it after the first few pages, the plot really picked up and I couldn't put the book down! I recommend it to anyone seeking an adventure that is out of this world, yet thrilling AND realistic...all at the same time.

Wonderful Characters!! I wanna meet my Godmother!.......1999-04-19

Sno got rid of her evil stepmother, but didn't find a prince, she decided to be a fairy Godmother herself. Set gorgeously in Ireland, this book describes her training to become a Godmother. It has the same deft twists of old stories into modern fantasy that worked so well for the rest of Annie's books.

Wow, this second book in the Godmother trilogy by Ms.Scarborough is even better than the first! It lets us peer deeper into the domain of Godmotherdom and even introduces us to the Queen of them All. If you enjoy felines, the lovely lilt of Irish brogue and fairy tales, this book will surely satisfy you! The dialog flows wonderfully even interspecies.

... but absolutely worth reading when you're a fan of classic (in this case Irish) fairytales in a modern "outfit".

First SF book I ever read - have been a convert ever since........1999-07-14

This book contains a number of elements that are unrealistic (e.g. it features real live Martians, and the author's take on womankind is, to put it lightly, less than politically correct - though I'm told that that was simply how American society viewed women at the time). If you can look past things like that, this book is *brilliant* ! And it's a prime example of what SF was like when it all began. That also means that, compared to current SF, the story is kind of dated - SF has gone a long way since way back then. But this book really opened my eyes in regard to the fun of discovering what an author thinks the universe would be like if ____ (just fill in the blank however you like) was true, possible, and/or had turned out differently.

Moons of Jupiter, then and now........1997-06-15

Edward E. Smith, Ph.D, in addition to being the foremost writer of all time about "Space Opera" was in many ways a visionary, and with his "Skylark" and "Lensman Series" constructed a universe so filled with spacefaring heroes and weird and wonderful aliens of all description as to boggle the imagination. Unlike the two series mentioned above, Spacehounds of IPC was a "stand alone" book about a huge spaceship on a standard run from Earth to Mars being partially destroyed by aliens who begin towing the spaceship back to Jupiter, where they live.

In light of todays space probe explorations of the planet Jupiter and its moons, one of which is thought to have frozen seas capable of supporting possible lifeforms, Smith's saga about "Steve Stevens" and "Nadia" Newton's adventures on Ganymede and Callisto, two of the moons of Jupiter, their subsequent rescue by Stevens' Interplanetary Corporation friends in the IPC research spaceship "Sirius" and their involvement in the war between the Hexans and Vorkulians of Jupiter, makes one wonder what we will find when our "Spacehounds" venture out past the Asteroid Belt and begin our own explorations of the moons of Jupiter. I consider myself fortunate to have a hard-cover copy of this book I purchased from Fantasy Press a half-century ago, and recommend it particularly to those science-fiction enthusiasts who like the grandeur and sweep of Smith's books.

Making the solar system safe.......2006-10-15

Safe for our kind, that is. You know, two-legged Earthian kind, not those nasty six-legged critters.

Brilliant physicist Dr. Stevens is off on a fact-finding mission, to save the honor of the brave pilots of the space-liner Arcturus from the desk-jockeys' imprecations of imprecision - the nastiest insult in his super-scientific world. He and the pilots are right, of course, but that's cold consolation when marauders from the depths of space hack up their ship and drag it off, in obvious violation of salvage laws.

Stevens and his beloved escape to an isolated moon of Jupiter, which happens to Earth-like right down to wildlife that's pretty tasty, when cooked up right. There, the fond couple struggle to rebuild all of Western technology from the ground up, and struggle to maintain the chastity of their impromptu engagement - lots of cold showers all around, I guess. They do a fair job of both, while events progress on just about every other bit of planetary real estate around. After much zooming around between worlds, the bad guys are all vanquished, the good guys and gals get properly hitched, and the space pilots protect their manly honor.

Parts of "Spacehounds" date back to the early 1930s, 75 years ago as of this writing. The goofy anachronisms are half the fun here, based on Smith's odd inability to imagine any technology much different from his own. The dated social commentary is amusing, too, for example in his mention of a dozen-plus of the space-liner's female passengers getting married before their rescuers arrived. They obviously didn't marry each other, but it somehow appears that women marry but men don't.

The date of writing is closer to Jules Verne than to today's science fiction, but a good bit harder to take seriously. Well, being serious isn't all that much fun anyway. If you want a happy bit of heroic space-silliness, Doc Smith is the man to bring it to you.

mix-up.......2007-06-08

Although the books are fine, there was a mix-up with the order and delivery.
I wanted the two Moosewood books to be billed to me but shipped to my friend in Raleigh, North Carolina.
I realized that you had recorded TWO shipments, one set of books to me, and
a duplicate set to my friend. When I reported this, you mistakenly cancelled the North
Carolina shipment and sent the books to me. Moreover, the North Carolina
shipment would have been free of shipping charge, but the books mistakenly sent to
me had $4.98 in shipping charges. I took it upon myself to re-ship the books
to my friend in North Carolina and pay the second shipping charge.

A terrific whole foods cookbook.......2007-01-27

Last spring I visited Ithaca, NY and had dinner at the Moosewood Restaurant. It was amazing! We went back for lunch the next day before heading home. Eating there was truly a life-changing experience for me. While there, I picked up this book - my first Moosewood book.

I have always been whole foods minded, but tended to make the same old things over and over. This cookbook really helped to open up my meal repertoire. In a year, I've made a few dozen recipes and so far they have all been winners - they have ranged from good to "holy cow!!!"

While I'm not a vegetarian, I'm a picky eater and generally don't eat much meat. I love this book because I can eat almost every recipe in it with no modification - this is a first for me! I am not into soy products, and unlike many vegetarian cookbooks, the recipes here aren't centered around soy or other meat-replacements. This is such a refreshing change!

Like another reviewer mentioned, most of the salads aren't what you would normally think of as salads, and can really stand on their own as entrees. There are dozens of different soups. Our favorite dishes are the Tibetan Lentil Soup, Balinese Rice Salad, and Orzo Pesto stuffed tomatoes.

The first Moosewood Book I ever bought... and the reason I bought more!.......2006-07-08

This book is the best cookbook in my entire collection. NOT because the meals are easy to prepare or the ingredients easy to find -- because frequently these meals take some time and effort, and a little searching to make sure you have all of the ingredients.

But these recipes are absolutely fabulous, and all are well worth the time it takes to prepare them. They are all very unique, and the book is filled with combinations of ingredients I never would have thought to put together myself on a whim, like the Indian Fruit Salad or the Warm Potato Salad. When I was first beginning to learn how to cook, THIS is the cookbook that turned me into a good cook! AND these are all mostly vegetarian, very healthy meals.

Interspersed with the recipes are also little vignettes / ramblings on food, eating, cooking and meal preparation, as well as guides to putting together your own food without a recipe, like what salad greens go well together. If you're not in the mood to cook, you can still sit down and just READ this book, because the little sections are really delightful to chew on. Along the bottoms of pages are menu ideas, complete with page references to the other recipes, and at the end of the book is an extensive index.

If there was a 6 star rating, I would gladly give this book 6 stars! There is nothing like it.

I love it, I use it........2006-04-27

Sure, there are two tiny chapters of recipes including seafood, which I never use, not being a seafood lover, and there are recipes that include clam juice or whatever, but I find that those are so easily substituted or simply left out that it doesn't make a difference. This is one of the cookbooks I use most on the fly, when I haven't thought out the menu in advance. Many of the recipes can be prepared without a dash to the store, with just stuff I have in the cupboards. There are many good pairing suggestions, and lots of the recipes go over well with my 4 and 2 year olds. We love the Baked Bean soup, Vegetable Pistou, Artichoke Avgolemono (this is a big hit with everone I've ever made it for), Classic Sichuan noodles, Persian Rice and Pistachio salad, Nepalese Egg salad, North African Roasted Cauliflower, I could go on. My kids favorite snack is the Baked seasoned tofu, we love the spiced paneer, and the shortening-free biscuits are great. This is a good cookbook to have.

The recipes are reliable and easy to follow.

Personal favorites: Butternut squash soup with sizzled sage, Jamaican tomato soup, Spicy carrot peanut soup, Black bean and chipotle soup, Tortilla soup, Corn chowder, Cream of mushroom, and Creamy herbed potato.

There's a large chapter on salads. Try the Asparagus and fennel pasta salad, Caesar salad, Chef salad a la Moosewood, Tomato flowers and the Tostada salad.

At the end of each page it will give menu ideas as to which salads go with which soups. Very helpful. Their salad dressings are very good but my all time favorite which I make once a week is the Moosewood house dressing. A delicious combination of canola oil, cider vinegar, honey, spinach leaves, basil leaves, dijon mustard, a little salt, fresh ground black pepper and buttermilk. All whirled together in a blender and tossed on fresh greens. It will keep in the fridge for about a week.

Very easy directions. Lovely.

THE book on miniature donkeys.......2006-03-11

Since there are only a few books available on Miniature Donkeys this is the one to get. Well written and lots of valuable information for the first time owner. A pleasure to read.

thought-provoking, pragmatic advice.......2004-11-27

This is an excellent book, and a most welcome read after the disastrous experiences I had with my first 3 miniature donkeys. Poor creatures. I'm only thankful that this wonderful edition has helped me prolong the life expectancy of my current miniature donkey, Gerhardt. Donkies are not something you can just buy to play with and show off to your friends, and then leave unattended with a pet monkey for days on end.

One minor qualm I have is how Gross fails to mention the calamities involved in allowing a pet monkey to ride a miniature donkey. Be forewarned - this is not a good thing to do!

This book says it all, although the section on feeding was somewhat vague. I really enjoyed the photographs. Although I do not have a mini donkey, I'm sure giving some though to it now. These animals are marvelous creatures. I think instead of another dog I'll go for a mini donkey and call him Kansas.

Those who collect world coins from the twentieth century will find this catalog an invaluable resource. Whether it is coins that an ancestor brought home from a war or the left over money from a trip overseas, this catalog will help you quickly identify where it is from, the metal composition of the coin and a general price guide to its current value as a collectible item. There are helpful pictures that show the actual coin you are researching. If you collect 20th century world coins this book is for you. If you have only a few coins to identify you might be better off consulting a friend or a coin dealer who may loan you a copy or let you look through theirs.

Getting Better, But Not There Yet.......2007-08-13

Having been a major collector of banknotes for 40+ years, I find the SCWPM series of banknote catalogs invaluable, but far from complete or accurate. This volume has improved graphics and updated pricing compared to the previous edition. The numbering system is chaotic, pictures misplaced, signature charts missing or incomplete, latest issues missing, etc. Mr. Cuhaj needs some help.

I was very disappointed by the latest issue of the 'modern issues' catalogue. There are at least two instances of incorrect page-headings, which are confusing, and one group of notes missed out completely - which suggests carelessness in editing the book. However my main disappointment is the number of issues which were new in 2005 or the first half of 2006 which have not been included - which, for a book dated and published in 2007 just is not good enough. If Krause Publications are going to make an annual out of the modern issues catalogue, then they must make the cut-off date for the inclusion of new issues much closer to the publication date. Why could they not put in the front a prominent note saying something like 'including all new issues up to July 2006'?

I feel a bit cheated by Krause.

Another poor attempt.......2007-06-28

Well yet another year passes and Krause gives us another inferior catalog. Inaccurate prices, incorrect pictures, notes two and three years old still not in the catlog. Since this is the only real catalog we can use for our hobby it has to do but i think that as hobbyists we need to let Krause know they need to take this book more serious and put a little more time, effort and professionalism into it. I know in years past I as well as many other hobbyists have sent Krause email after email with new pictures, errors in the catalog only to see the next catalog with out the changes. So it seems to me they do not take the us or our hobby very serious. It would be very nice to see another publisher get into the race and perhaps come out with the type of catalog we hobbyists deserve.

This book is the third volume in a line series dedicated to paper money collecting. This one particularly concentrates on the banknotes issued by central banks all over the World from 1961 onwards. The book is "The reference" used by all collectors and dealers alike. Thus, it is a must in order to keep uptodate with market prices and with the current issues. Unfortunately, it has mistakes and sometimes it lacks continuity with its counterpart (vol. 2) which is not issued annualy like this one. Nevertheless, if you are involved in paper money collecting, owning this book is imperative in order to be able to refer properly to any moder banknote.
The book can be bought from many sources, starting with its Publisher (Krause), however, my advice is to get it from Amazon.com, since its discunts are unbeatable.

WPM, Modern Issues, 1961-Date, 11th Ed........2005-07-30

As always, the work and research to get the latest information available to the collector is presented to us in the catalog as best as possible. I would like to see a section that list countries whose names have changed. While the catalog is a tremedous effort to 'keep current' with the many changes going on while it is in the making, I long for the day when the CD comes out and changes are added electronically. Stamp collectors now have this and a virtual stamp collection. Thanks to all that work to get the latest information for a great hobby!

World Paper Money 11th ed. Modern Issues.......2005-07-26

Most useful - but - there seem to be several errors in this catalogue. One of the most glaring is the complete omission of SOMALIA, despite the index refering the reader to page 772. These are, in fact, the entries for SOMALILAND from 1994. All entries for SOMALIA from 1962 to 1990 have disappeared.

I would say, - there is no other, better book, so we have to use this one. I have looked through some pages of it and I already found quite a few blunders. First of all there are quite a few misleading price valuations, I would even say many price manipulations. I haven't gone through every single page of it yet, but a quick look at the book reveals the following:

- Overall image quality got worse (much worse) in this year 2005 edition. Some photos have some white spots and cuts.

- Signature tables have disappeared in quite a few country listings. Instead of signature tables Krause website is advertised all across the pages. Question: why remove what already has been added over years?

- Most of the country letter code explanations and country names are gone from West African States listings.

- Signatures are numbered but not always displayed in signature tables.

- Catalogue numbers are changed and moved around to frequently confusing the collectors and especially addong tons of extra work for dealers.

- Many banknotes are valued way below market value. Some are valued below anytime exchange rate. Example: Latvian 100 Latu exchange rate always was over $160 but Krause values it in Uncirculated condition at $150.

- No ERRATA is being printed. Any self-respecting publisher prints errata pages and puts them in a book, or even sends Errata (corrections) pages to all their customers and book owners. The book was published carelessly. Some colourful images (not so important to a professional) were added, but what's most important is the text info and price valuations. This book is important to a beginner and as well to a professional. We still have to use it, cause there is no other catalogue for All World's Paper Money, but making so many errors and blunders shows that the publisher of this book does not care much about what the reader gets from it.

This hefty volume provides all the necessary information that a collector needs: prices of four grades, metal composition and weight, coin picture, mintage, dates, mint and a KM number of every coin. Additional useful appendices are also included, which can faciliatete the task of identifying cryptic coins (using this book, I've identified three previously unidentifiable coins!) My only criticism is that the coins appear in black and white. A color verion might augment the price, but at least in some parts, this is a must -- For example, when the authors explain how to grade coins, one can hardly see the difference between Unc and AU, or XF and VF. I also found one coin missing from the Israeli catalog, but other than that this is an excellent collector's reference.

As the machine age roared at full tilt in the early twentieth century, avant-garde artists saw opportunities to buck the past. In welcoming the new technologies, they created the art we now identify as modernist.

Assembling Art gives a vivid account of this American avant-garde revolution in the production of art. Challenged by unprecedented technological advancement, artists embraced collage, montage, and the striking juxtaposition of incongruent materials and ideas.

By appropriating disparate icons from visual and material culture---the skyscrapers of New York or the body of the black entertainer Josephine Baker or cigarette packaging---artists re-conceived and revitalized the relationship between art and life. There was no particular "school" of early American moderns. The artists' approaches were diverse, ironic, and individualistic. However, one phenomenon does seem to inform much of the work produced in this era: the pervasiveness and power of machine technology.

This book focuses on the automaton, still life, portraiture, and jazz to illuminate machine-age art. A different look.......2005-05-01

I enjoyed reading this book. I'm always interested in reading books by authors who are from other countries. I was really glad that the author didn't have a lot of negative things to say about the country. I have a Afghan friend, who just moved here to the states, that gives a little different story on the treatment of women there than the author does but I really enjoyed the book and think that it will give all readers a look of what's it like to leave your country to move to a new country that's totally different than what you are use too.

If you only read the newspapers you'd assume that Islam is a religion to which only men subscribe. Maryam's book is therefore an invaluable contribution to the literature. Here is a smart, well-educated woman's personal account of her life and faith. It's not didactic or argumentative, it's simply a refreshingly candid, personal, and articulate account of how the world looks to an Afghan-American Muslim woman. This is a voice we don't hear much amidst the clamor of opinions currently raging about Islam and the West, and it's information we can't get from any "objective" source. Thank goodness for this insider who is willing to share.

Yes, I wish the author, Maryam Qudrat Aseel, could be on national TV on a regular basis, discussing the ongoing cultural rift between the U.S. and the Middle East. Her book is about the Afghan-American experience. Ironically, I picked up this book looking for experiences of Pakistani-Americans for a research project. I could not find one, but decided to start with this book.

The author relates her experiences growing up in the U.S., visiting Afghanistan, and trying to hold Afghan traditions in a western culture. Being part of both is not an easy thing to do. This even-handed, well-written book clearly explains historical, cultural and present-day aspects of Afghanistan life and of being Afghan-American. I normally read fiction, and skim some nonfiction, but did not with this book. I was pleasantly surprised at her engaging, colorful writing.

I half-expected some propaganda. However, I can honestly say the book seems highly objective. Maryam understands both the U.S. and Afghan side of the issues with an intelligent balance. While I had known some about the Islam faith, I learned a lot more. I also have a much better understanding of the role of women in Middle Eastern culture, the difference between Middle Eastern culture and Muslim beliefs, and the true relationship of the Taliban to the Afghan people.
