Book Description
Hilarious and poignant, Homer in Flight draws a brilliant picture of a chronic malcontent roving from high-rise to housing development along the 401 and the QEW. Homer remains utterly displaced, not because of what other people do or don't do, but because he lives in his imagination instead of embracing an imperfect but fairly benign reality.
Customer Reviews:
Maharaj describes the character and feelings of an immigrant.......1999-06-07
Rabindranath Maharaj introduces an interesting story of Homer, an immigrant to Canada from his native country. He explains the bribery and corruption in the government of Trrinidad and expresses the experience of immigration, weather, hardship. prejudice, changes in social structure and racism in Canada. Maharaj describes the character and feelings of a new immigrant. He analizes the martial lifestyle while being unsettled. He also clarifies the character of Wali and his wife because of their honest, positive approach and help for Homer to get a job in a factory. He describes the half portion of his novel more interesting, but the remaining half is slow and un appealing. The end of the novel was beautiful because of the big achievement of Homer to become a writer.

Book Description
Packed with photos, this fascinating introduction to the monsters and peoples in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy shows how the filmmakers have brought the inhabitants of Middle-earth to life for the big screen.
The book contains creatures familiar from the first film, from the benign hobbits to Lurtz, the ill-fated leader of the Uruk-hai, and includes races prominent in the new movie, The Two Towers, including the Rohirrim, the Easterlings, the Haradrim and the tree-like Ents.
Both an exciting introduction for children and a reference for adult movie buffs, there are also behind-the-scenes details on how each creature was designed and brought to life.
Includes fold-out poster.
Customer Reviews:
Fun book, nothing new to the die hard fan!.......2007-09-13
To the huge LOTR/Tolkien fans out there, this book will be nothing new as far as the descriptions of the 'creatures'. However, I bought the book soley for the quotes by the cast and the behind the scenes photo's from filming which are great! They make the book well worth adding to your collection, especially for the low cost it is!
Need some tips?.......2003-03-18
The epic movie trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" was the first exposure to Tolkien's work for a lot of the people who watched it. And the fans who haven't yet read the books should check out this book, to get the tips on who and what and where and why.
Basically, this "Creatures" book lets the readers know: What's a hobbit? What's an Elf? What's an Ent? Readers of the original fantasy trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien will know all of this. On the other hand, newbies will like being able to look these things up -- especially since "Two Towers" has a lot of new material, with the Ents, Haradrim, Rohirrim, and others. The book is pretty short, and seems even shorter because it is composed mostly of photographs. These are clear, brightly colored, and great shots -- not just of stuff in the movies, but also from stuff behind the scenes.
What's especially nice are the quotes. Accompanying many of the smaller photographs are quotes from director Peter Jackson, special-effects wizard Richard Taylor, actors Elijah Wood, Ian Holm, Sean Astin, and pretty much everyone else. These quotes add insights into both the characters ("In their world, it's who you are on the inside that matters") and behind the scenes (complaints about the hobbit feet, from several actors). One of the best quotes is Peter Jackson revealing how the much-maligned Tom Bombadil almost made a cameo -- fans of the books will want to check that out.
Even if you've read the other books, this brief book will offer a few new insights and plenty of good movie and behind-the-scenes pictures.
A Good Introductory Guide for Children and Adults.......2003-01-11
Although this is the official movie guide for children to the Two Towers, I found that it was helpful for adults who are not Lord of the Rings fans and/or have not read any of the books by Tolkien. It is lushly illustrated with gorgeous photos of all of the people/creatures in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. There are also a few photos of how they developed CGI characters such as the cave troll and Sauron. Underneath each photograph is a sentence or two explaining who the person/creature is and how they fit into the story. The wording and the brevity of the descriptions make it perfect for younger readers or those looking for a quick and dirty introduction to the characters of Middle Earth including Hobbits, Ents, Easterlings, Haradrim, Uruk-Hai, Gollum, the Watcher in the Water, Dwarves, Elves, Wizards/Istari, Balrog, Gwaihir, and many more. The book also comes with a free fold out enlarged picture of Gandalf confronting the Balrog in Moria. I would recommend this book for those who are not very familiar with The Lord of the Rings trilogy and for children ages 8 and up. It is very short at app. 60 pages (most of which is taken up by pictures) and so is a great introduction. However, if you are a Tolkien fan and familiar with the stories or saw the first movie, there is nothing new for you here.

edgy.......2000-06-20
A set of sci-fi and fantasy stories relating, like the rest of Cecilia Tan's collections, with gender issues. In this set, you get stories of people with both sets of 'parts', neither (the theme is "I'm not telling"), and switchable (one story about a "gen-fem" with a set of plug-in phalluses).
Definitely edgy and interesting, using the genre to touch on what constitutes male, female or 'other'.

The meal-in-a-bowl brews at the Daily Soup, a Manhattan food chain, excite customer devotion. Now Leslie Kaul, the stores' executive chef, along with the owners, offer The Daily Soup Cookbook, a collection of 200 favorite recipes for soups, stews, and stocks. These straightforward formulas, drawn from a globe-spanning repertoire, will please cooks of all kinds, from beginners to the accomplished.
Organized by ingredients such as vegetables, beans, grains, and fruit, the recipes include old favorites like French Onion and Chicken Matzoh Ball soups, as well as less familiar brews such as Jamaican Pumpkin soup, Shrimp and Scallop Seviche, and Poblano Corn Chowder. In addition to a chapter devoted to chilis---Braised Pork Chili with Black Beans and Corn is a particular winner--the authors provide notes on ingredients and techniques, historical asides, and a series of tongue-in-cheek sidebars, offering, for example, the Periodic Table of Soups and Baby Names for the New Millennium ("Art E. Choke" is one). If these digressions aren't always apt, there are always the soups, with several pièce de résistance examples--Peking Duck; Lamb, Artichoke, and Rosemary Stew; and Saffron Mussel soup--guaranteed to please. A final section on stocks provides basic soup building-block information, and Things to Do with Leftover Soups offers next-day options, should any of the delicious bowls not be devoured instantly. --Arthur Boehm

Such a good book as you can't believe.......2007-08-19
I had sworn not to add any additional cookbooks to my collection. I came across this one and broke my own rule to myself and have been glad that I did. This is a perfect cookbook. I've found that for my lifestyle, soups is the way to go, and none of the recipes has been a dud. Quite the opposite. I have decided to go through the entire book and do every recipe in the book.
Many of the recipes call for the use of thyme leaves, an herb that I had not used much. I am now very comfortable with it and appreciate the flavor that it brings to these recipes.
Tried so far with great success: The cream-less asparagus soup ( buy frozen asparagus, don't try to peel and chop 2 lbs. of fresh asparagus...takes too long), Cuban black bean ( I had three cans of black beans and one can of chick peas from a close-out sale ...so I left out the salt that the recipe calls for and substituted the already prepared beans. Note: there is a minor flaw in the recipe. First, it has been proven since the book was written that you can add salt to the beans, the beans won't toughen from the salt. But tomatoes or other acids do toughen beans and I wouldn't add any tomatoes, canned, fresh or otherwise until I was certain my beans were cooked and tender), French onion soup (really good. I roasted my onions in the oven per the instructions).
Best soup cookbook, period!.......2007-04-02
I have owned this soup cookbook for many years and recently purchased it for my parents who love soup. The vast selection of receipes are all broken down into groups such as vegetarian, meat, pasta, tomato etc. this is a great way of having a craving for a particuliar king of soup then looking up all the additional options you can make based on that craving. If you are a soup lover all year round this is the only soup cookbook you will ever need.
Soup Lovers Delight.......2007-03-18
Great new ideas for enhancing flavors and adding richness to basic soups. Plus, they offer some wonderfully fresh combinations of ingredients for unique adventures in the soup world. I often substitute some good vegetarian bullion cubes for the admittedly better home made stock to save time, but the end result is still deeply satisfying. Originally coming to me as a gift, I have followed the tradition for my soup loving friends and family.
great soup, but a LOT of work.......2006-10-01
I should preface this by mentioning that the soup is truly fantastic. My wife and I have tried four recipes, so far (Poblano Corn Chowder, Roasted Red Pepper Soup, Mushroom Barley, and Chicken Garlic Bread). She's big a big fan of all four; I've really liked three of them and was lukewarm on the fourth. So overall, we're generally pretty pleased with the end result.
That being said, a ton of work goes into each recipe - generally 3 - 4 hours if you include making stock. Typically, there is also a long list of ingredients per recipe. Now, I don't mind this if everything is going into the final product. However, especially when making stock, you tend to throw away a ton of veggies that are essentially being used to flavor water. This is just too wasteful (time and money-wise) for me.
In the last two recipes, we've cut a few steps (for instance, subbing bouillon for the lengthy stock-making process), and the soups have turned out great. In my opinion, this book doesn't get a perfect 5 simply because there are no helpful variations or shortcuts like the simple one I mentioned above. I'm wouldn't say that it has to be quick in order to be good, but who has 3 - 4 hours for soup?
A total Ripoff.......2006-06-05
The review says 200 recipes. Someone help me. I barely counted 100 --- most of which I would not make in a million years.
I am going to ask amazon.com to send me a mailing label to return this based on its misrepresentation.

fantastic dogue de bordeaux book.......2006-07-22
Absolutely fantastic book with enough infomation to help anyone from the novise to the very experience Dogue de Bordeaux breeder I loved it .
Good general book for caretaking of the Bordeaux.......2005-08-31
This book is a good beginner book for new Dogue de Bordeaux owners. The book covers a little history on the Bordeaux breed as well as information about how to care for the breed. This book was a little too "beginner" for me for it covered a lot about how to care for dogs in general such as house breaking, create training, etc.
Book Description
A sumptuous selection of jewelry made to adorn the head - tiaras, aigrettes and bandeaux. Emblems of success and happiness, tiaras are some of the most beautifully crafted jewelry pieces of the past two centuries. The House of Chaumet has continuously excelled in this art, from the papal tiara offered by Napoleon to Pius VII, to the hundreds of hair adornments created over the last decades, always reflecting the period's most formidable fashions and decorative arts. An exquisite selection from unknown Chaumet archives representing the most aesthetic portraits of head jewelry, the book is an inspiring look at Chaumet's wondrous adornments. The author traces the evolution of these jewels from the 18th century to present, featuring the outstanding personalities for whom they were made and the great events at which they were worn.

Timeless Tiara Pictures.......2005-02-22
Let us be clear- this is a picture book. Beautiful pictures but just pictures. This book contains very little text. If you like detailed photo captions or historical background information you will be disappointed with this book. But for a photo overview of the wide variety of styles and designs in headgear this is a great resource.
tiaras galore.......2003-09-05
This is a wonderful to drool over the fabulous tiaras that were made over the course of the 19th and early 20th century. The only drawback is the lack of text explaining more about the tiaras themselves. It's a wonderful book, but if you can only buy one, get the tiara books by Geoffrey Munn!

The REAL episode one.......1999-08-05
If you like Star Wars, buy the ORIGINAL Episode One. The new movie is C**P! This is the first episode in the true series and anything before it is but marketing strategy, and a show of CGI chutzpah. Blech. Save your $$ and buy A New Hope!
Book Description
In April 2002, the Israeli army reoccupied Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority has its headquarters. A tank blocked Raja Shehadeh's road; Israeli soldiers seized his brother's home and used him as a human shield during a search, as his frightened wife and children watched. When the Birds Stopped Singing reveals the rage and terror of daily life in these dire circumstances, showing how time passes for people imprisoned in their own homes, how they cope with being forbidden to cross the neighborhood to help a sick relative or dying friend. A chronicle of lives that somehow endure under impossible circumstances, Shehadeh's diary is a compelling and important document of a problem that seems increasingly beyond solution.
Customer Reviews:
Very Powerful Account of Palestinian Ordinary Citizens.......2006-10-05
This book should be read by all of the Western world to gain a perspective on the ordinary citizen living in the Occupied territory of Palestine. So often, I don't think we actually realize what "Occupation" means and how much power remains in Israel's hands even when there is not an actual occupation of a specific city. The author helped me understand the Oslo Accord and how it failed to bring justice to the region.
This account ( using a diary format) really brings home what curfew means to daily life and the fear which comes when soldiers invade without regard to human feelings. Although written in 2003, I'm sure this holds true in 2006, and certainly makes me more attentive to news coming out of their continued struggle.
Outstanding and very powerful book.......2005-10-27
This book left me horrified at what is going on in the Middle East. It is even worse than I thought - and I thought I knew a lot about the situation already. Raja's day to day account, written in the form of a diary, gives a first hand account of what it is like to live under Occupation.
This is hell on earth; and we in America are financing it all, with our 3 billion dollars a year that we send to Israel in military aid.
The greatest threat to World Peace lies here, and we are paying for it.
Average.......2004-04-09
(...)I purchased "When the Birds Stopped Singing" without hesitation as I looked forward to his unique human rights and legal perspective as an adult during the intifada. While his writing style is still engaging, the content is not as strong. This small book is simply a collection of short diary entries that depict his daily experiences during the difficult times. While the situation itself is heart breaking, the entries become redunant with several descriptions of outrageous Israeli soldier behavior, Palestinian subjugation and rebellion, and the difficulties of living some semblance of a normal life under such circumstances. I did not find anything new or compelling in this book, rather I felt I was perusing a random personal journal that was likely never meant to be published. Shehadeh's human rights and legal perspective never seemed to emerge in his entries which left this as an average book that will likely only appeal to those who have not heard many personal accounts of Palestinian life during the intifiada.
life goes on.......2003-12-15
This book is about the siege of Ramallah and Shehadeh tells a heartbreaking story, with plenty of villians to go around. I expected that. To my surprise, what makes the book worth reading are the heroes. Not the Isreali soldiers. Not the PLO. Not Islamic Jihad or Hamas. The heroes of this book are the everyday people who actually try to live a normal life in the West Bank.
