This volume collects the second trilogy in the saga of Corum Jhaelen Irsei and consists of "The Bull and the Spear", "The Oak and the Ram", and "The Sword and the Stallion". Corum, for those of you who are not familiar with Moorcock, is an incarnation of the Eternal Champion. In this trilogy, Corum is called into the distant future to assist in the battle against the Fhoi Myore. While there, he learns some important lessons about love and belonging.

I have to confess that Corum is probably my least favorite of the incarnations of the Eternal Champion-- I like both Elric and Hawkmoon better. All the same, you have the general elements of Moorcock greatness-- brooding reluctant hero, the companion & his cat, and a strong tie in to historical myth and legend.

Start with the Swords Trilogy, and not here, if you have read no Corum before. The backstory is helpful to understand character motivation, if nothing else.

Stripped Bare.......2005-01-01

I first read the Chronicles of Corum when in high school over 25 years ago, and still re-read it every couple of years. It is a brutal sword-and-sorcery tale, but all the more real for its grinding, downbeat story. The exploration of the struggle for balance between chaos and law (allegorical at some level,I am sure) lends a sensibility to the story that is absent from far too many Sw&So tales. If you want gleaming knights in armor, the only one you will find is this book is not rescuing damesels in distress. A fine, disturbing tale.

The second half of the tale of Corum........2003-04-05

Michael Moorcock, The Chronicles of Corum (Berkley, 1973)

Moorcock returns to the world of the Eternal Champion, in the guise of Corum, then rips him out of it. Over a thousand years after the events of the last novels, Corum has become worshipped as a demigod. His followers summon him into their time to do battle with extraplanar beings of (at most) animal intelligence known as the Cold Gods. The Cold Gods are dying, slowly, but they have every intention of taking all of humanity with them.

Together with the last of the Sidhi, a race of magic-using nonhumans roughly akin to elves in most fantasy worlds, Corum and those who worship him go to do battle with another force bent on destroying the planet.

The plot may get old, especially when so many fantasy novels by so many authors revolve around it. But it's still fun to read and easy to deal with. As with the first part of Corum's epic (The Swords Trilogy), Moorcock doesn't take as many chances with fantasy conventions as he does in the Elric novels, and so these are slightly less challenging to the reader's conceptions of what's "supposed" to happen in fantasy novels. Still, they're quite a bit of fun, for all they they're predictable. *** ½

Swords and Sorcery Tale Of The Eternal Champion.......2000-04-14

Corum is the Eternal Champion, the last of a species destroyed by the gods (using the barbaric humans known as Mabden), he is doomed to fight against Chaos in different incarnations throughout time. I think Moorcock's melodramatic swords and sorcery tale is engrossing. Corum changes from a somewhat privileged member of a decadent, spiritual race into a battle-hardened tough survivor capable of defeating gods and arguing against "fate." Moorcock tells an old-fashioned tale very well. Not for everyone but I treasure my copy.

Super Reader.......2007-08-30

This trilogy again stars Corum, Prince of the Silver Hand. It is also an adaptation of the mythological conflict between the Tuatha De Danaan and the Firbolg, with Corum of the Silver Hand standing in for one of the heroes opposing the Firbolg, due to the similarities.

Here, Corum and the Mabden's enemy is the Fhoi the gods of the Cold Folk, and they have to deal with war, and the terrible, biting cold that steadily grows worse and worse.

Don't fret that this book is out of print. Most of Moorcock's works are currently being reprinted by White Wolf. This book is on that agenda. Be patient. This is one of the books of the second Corum trilogy, which is possibly the darkest series Moorcock has written to date. I give this book a low rating because I didn't really enjoy reading these books, not because of any lack of imagination or talent on the part of the author. If you're into dismal fantasy, this is as good as it gets.

Paced too fast.......2002-03-03

This is the second book in Michael Moorcock's Chronicles of Corum series. The book continues the adventures of Prince Corum first begun in 'The Knight Of Swords'. In this book Prince Corum travels too a different plane to try and end the hegemony of The Queen of Swords, and thus save his own plane from the forces of Chaos. With him is the eternal companion of Champions,Jhary-a-conel and his winged cat.
I don't know if this story was originally written for a magazine format, but it certainly reads like it. This is probably the weakest of the swords trilogy, and like all three books in the sword trilogy, the pace is breakneck. One has no time to appreciate the dangers Corum finds himself in, before he is immediately rescued and moved on to the next predicament.

This is far and away the best all-around bartending guide I've seen. The authors go way beyond drink recipies and discuss history, glassware, bar equipment, and drink making technique. It's easy to read and understand. Highly recommended.

Take It From A Pro.......2005-07-21

Well, I'm a professional bartender and was getting ready to order some more of "Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guides" for some of my bartender friends when I noticed the "pulpfoto" review and just felt I had to respond. I disagree with everything he said, and wonder if we have different books!

First of all, I haven't looked for a classic recipe I couldn't find in this book. And what's with the "Caesar" cocktail reference? First of all, Seagrams Bartending Guide doesn't even have a Caesar cocktail in it (and, by the way, no one's ever ordered a Caesar in this bar, and I've been here for 10 years). And the Seagrams book is no where near as user-friendly as this book because it lists the drinks by liquor-the "Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide" lists them alphabetically, which means when a customer asks for a drink I'm not familiar with, I can flip it open and have the recipe at my fingertips in an instant. And, though I don't use it anymore, the Seagrams book doesn't sit on the bar at any better than this book. (I'm wondering if the "pulpfoto" guy wrote the Seagrams book and was trying to knock the ratings on this book down).

Bottom line: the "Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide" delivers in a major way . . . from the classics to the newer cocktails. Plus lots of information on everything from ice to garnishes. It has everything you'll ever need to know on cocktails, whether you are a home bartender, or a beginning bartender, or one who's been in the biz for a decade, like me. In short, this book's a winner!

This is a great book.......2005-07-16

I can't stand it. The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar guide is a great book and I'm confused by the "pulpfoto" review below-I think it is misleading. I've looked through the Seagram's Bartending Guide including the index for the last 15 minutes and I cannot find "Caesar." So if the review is based on this, then where is it? My version of the Seagram's book is 1995 (which seems old but it's the one where pupfoto's full review of the guide is listed. Also see the review of the Seagram's Guide where pulpfoto says "The Ultimate A-Z Bar Guide has a weird index where you need to know the main liquor involved before you can look up the drink!! What if you dont know?" Well, duh! As the name, the Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide, says it's A to Z so you look in the main body of the book. If you're looking for "Bushwhacker" look under the Bs, if you're looking for a "Knickerbocker Cocktail" look under the Ks. I think the four indexes are terrific and I have not seen another book like this where you can look up by 1-drinks by alcohol type, 2- drinks by primary non-alcoholic ingredient, 3-drinks by classic categories or 4-drinks by special category. The other reviewers have got it right.

For home bars only!!.......2005-03-23

This book may have a lot of drinks, lots of recipes and some funny anecdotes...but as a professional bartender it has some serious flaws - it is in no way a complete bar guide - in fact it misses a few popular cocktails that I serve regularly - and these are not local specials but well known age old drinks!! Also it is paperback and doesnt sit well on the bar - I like a book that is gonna last and that is easy to work with. If you need to know the definition of a "barspoon" then this books has the answer - if you want to know how to make a Caesar then try Seagrams Bartending Guide!!

Thsi book seriously owns!!!. Alot...and i mean ALOT of great recipes. This is the ultimate book for beginners. But theres alot more that just recipes and other extras like blood alcohol level charts, wine information, bar essentials such as glassware, tools and of course drinks, and much, much more. Now you may be like me right now reading this....why do i need all that baloney, i just want to make drinks. Well, to you I say if you do not get this book you are missing out. This stuff is interesting, and it can make you look really proffesional. Awesome buy...no regrets!!!!!

Best Text Available on Scent.......2001-04-21

I was first introduced to Scent and the Scenting Dog in 1973 when I went through the Seattle Police K-9 Academy. I found it to be the only text to present the facts of scent and scentwork in a scientific manner. The underlaying source information is footnoted and verifiable.This book presents the facts of scent and avoids simplistic methods. It demonstrates to the practitioner the scent evidence available to the dog under differing circumstances and what methods of application/training are likely to succeed. It also describes the physiology of the dog's olfactory system, giving the reader a factually based understanding of the dog's ability and power to receive scent. It is as accurate and valuable today as when it was written. I relied upon this book as a police dog handler, and retained it as a text when teaching future handlers through a 20 year career.

Scent and the Scenting Dog.......2000-06-14

This was a great book for theory. Helps you to understanding what you might be seeing when those seemingly unexplainable things happen on the track. It won't teach you to track at all, but it will help you understand the mechanics of your dogs senses and scent. This was the missing link for me.

Invaluable source for search dog handlers........1999-04-17

Thorough and easy to understand explanation of human and vegetative scents, their relevance to search dog training, and the ways their properties affect searches and are affected by influences such as heat and snow. A well researched and presented argument for air searching over tracking and trailing. I'd like to see a similarly clear and easily understood essay by Mr Syrotuck on passive and pro-active narcotic dog training. I found this manual fascinating and full of invaluable information.

Good book to travel with.......2003-11-23

If you're planning a driving trip and want to do antiquing along the way then this is a neat book. Each state has the major cities with lists of antiques shops (not comprehensive but a start) as well as recommended Bed & Breakfasts or Inns to stay at. The thing that's missing for me is an intro to each state that kind of summs it up - like if you're going to go to the state definitely don't miss going to this area or that area or if you're going to be there a certain time of the year watch out for this antique fair or this flea market. I'm still looking for a book that will do that. So, for me this book only gets three stars but I think if you plan to be going on a trip and are interested in hitting a few antique shops along the way then this will help get you there. It would have been nice if there were short reviews of the different shops indicating what the dealer specializes in if anything. Oh well. This book left me wanting something more.

Best Beginner Book.......2007-06-27

I wish I had purchased this book months ago. This is the perfect beginners book with its clear instructions, descriptions, and samples. The author clearly explains her own mistakes while learning, and gives the reader a real confidence to tackle new projects.

i read this book when i was about 11 and purchased it for my 12 yr old son last month. he loved it as much as i did. loves to read, loves world war ii history and had no idea that the u s had holding camps for u s citizens of japanese descent. started a diolog with his g'pa, s f born and bred, about japanese americans he'd known as a child who were imprisoned. should be required reading for all

Farewell to Manzanar is a novel about a girl and her family going into an internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
This book is very well written. It explains the struggles that many Japanese people went through during World War Two and Pearl Harbor during the early 1940s. This books states how it was like to be Japanese inside an interment camp and the uncertainty of what was going to happen the next day. This book is based on one main thing, oppression. It is a novel based on oppression because there is negative power being used by the government for only one specific social group or race, which in this case are Japanese people. The main characters in this book are the father who is taken away from his family by the government and his family, who is not sure when he is coming back. The mother is a strong, independent woman during the novel and Kiyo, who is the little brother, is always trying to make someone laugh. Finally there is Martha, who is the girl telling the family's story.

Overall, I think this is a good book to read because you get to see what Japanese Americans' experiences were like in internments camps and what it felt like to not know what was going on or coming next. -by Carlos

Martha remembers lots of things, but this one she will never forget. She remembers it was December and there had to be about 20-25 boats bombed in Pearl Harbor. Her dad is taken away from her house, because the U.S wants to get information from all Japanese Americans to check and see if they are responsible for Pearl Harbor.

In my opinion, this girl suffered more than anyone I know, because she loses everything. She loses her dad, her family, and also her house. There is nothing left for her. I've never seen my dad, but I would hate to have seen him then lose him. Her family is taken to Manzanar, a Japanese internment camp. She is with them, but not living the way she wants to. She is with her brother and mother in the camp. She loses her house, because the U.S thinks she is potentially responsible for Pearl Harbor, or has something to do with it. Overall, I think this book is very good because it gives you very good details on how a little girl experiences a traumatic event at a young age. -by Chavez

A Farewell to Manzanar is a very well written book. It is about a little Japanese girl and what her family had to go through during three years in the Japanese interment camp, Manzanar. There are things she loses like her dad, her house, and her personal belongings. While she is in the interment camp, she goes to school. She has to get permission from parents to spend time with their children while in the camp. Her dad gets taken because the FBI finds evidence that the father has been giving Japan fuel and oil. They are wrong, but just like that, take him away.

Its really interesting reading what the little Japanese girl has to go through in the interment camp. She stands strong even though her dad is taken away. Even though she suffers, she still keeps on strong. It's a good example that even though things might seem hard, there is always a solution for everything. -by Elsie

Internment Camp.......2007-04-23

Jeanne is only seven years old and living in California when Pearl Harbor is attacked. Her parents were from Japan but had been living in the United States for most of their lives. Jeanne and her eight older siblings had all been born in this country and raised as English-speaking Americans. Jeanne's father is now a fisherman who owns two of his own fishing boats. Their family is moderately successful.

All of their success and security ends when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. All of a sudden, people begin looking at Japanes Americans, who are not allowed to become citizens, as the enemy. The American government is terrified that people of Japanese background will pass secrets to the Japanese who are attacking us, so the government takes rights away from anyone who has Japanese blood.

Jeanne's family is considered a particular danger, because they live on the west coast and they fish. They are no longer allowed to fish. Their boats are confiscated. They are then sent to Manzanar, a relocation camp further inland, where thousands of Japanese Americans are sent to live in a fenced-in area until the war is over.

When they first arrive at Manzanar, things are pretty bad. The barracks have been hastily constructed and do not do much to keep out the cold or the dust swirling all around. They are not large enough for families to live comfortably. The food that is served is almost inedible, because the people planning the meals have no concept of what Japanese people eat. Worst of all, though, is the knowledge of the people living there that their government doesn't trust them.

Jeanne and her family are forced to live at this camp for years. This book is an honest look at what the camp was like and what effect it had on Jeanne's family to be stationed there.

I liked that Jeanne doesn't portray her family as perfect. They have as many problems as any other family, and her father is especially flawed. Before I read this book I didn't know much about the Japanese camps, so it was interesting for me to get to know a whole new aspect of the war that isn't discussed as much as the things happening overseas.

This was one person's story, which is both a strength and a weakness. It offers a first-hand account of day to day life, but it lacks in well-rounded historical information. I would like to have know what the government's reasoning was, and how the authorities justified keeping these people locked up for so long.

when i read this book i cried because the americans were fighting against the germans who were doing horific things to the jews and the americans do that to american citizens who are japanese. i'm japanese but an american citizen.

This book is essential to have in a home library, especially in a home with school-aged children. A history lesson and a endearing story combined, Farewell to Manzanar captures Jeanne Wakatsuki's own experiences throughout the Japanese Internment period. Many historical textbooks skim over this shameful time in American history, yet Wakatsuki brings this issue to light and does so with candor, humor and honesty. This book comes with a historical timeline about this era and historical information needed to accurately understand the conditions of the internment. The book approaches this topic by giving us in-depth character analysis, so readers can get an accurate perspective of a Japanese American citizen going through this ordeal. As a result, the story can capture those disinterested and indifferent readers, giving them something real to read about and since the story is a memoir, comprehension is fairly easy. The subject content would appeal to readers from sixth grade on. However, there are many flashbacks, which to a struggling reader, can create some difficulty in following the story along chronologically. However difficult to follow, the flashbacks add to Wakatsuki's writing style, making the book truly interesting and giving us a lesson in remembrance.
